I had a idea a while back to sculpt a bunch of demons from scratch, using a translucent material so that they could be painted as if they were materialising out of thin air. With that in mind, I kicked off the experimenting by picking up a pack each of the translucent versions of Sculpey and Fimo.

Turns out, they're not actually very translucent. But, I had fun with them, and so decided to keep going with non-transparent demons anyway.

So here's the first effort, sculpted from Sculpey:

I'm not entirely happy with the mouth, but it was a but of a rush job just to try out the material, so overall I don't mind that it's not perfect.

The second, made from Fimo:

There's a very noticeable difference to the two materials when working with them. Sculpey is softer, easier to push around, but also a little harder to get smooth, while the Fimo is a little more like Green Stuff, firmer and with a little 'bounce-back'... more difficult to get hard edges with. I'm tempted to try mixing the two together to see if that gives a workable middle ground...

Here's a size comparison with a Space Marine:

And number 3 in progress... He's been baked, but still needs his eye added in. Due to the slight translucency of the putty, they really don't look like much at this point in the process...

More soon.

You could also make a master of Sculpey and then mold, then cast it in clear resin...

Interesting. I really like these. Are you using any special primer to paint the Sculpey/Fimo?

I've tried unsuccessfully to create things for Warhammer in the past, but you're a much better sculptor than I am. I used Sculpey and found it irritatingly soft. I did find success with a Sculpey base and greenstuff details, however, on a larger model.

I had considered that, but decided it was too much faffing about... I'm not duplicating any of these, as part of the point of sculpting them was to have not have duplicated models. Making a mould just for a single cast, and dealing with the joy of castin clear resin (which bites) was just too much work for this project.

I don't use any special primer on anything. These were undercoated by hand as I was in a hurry, but generally I just use regular matte black spray.

Obviously time will tell whether that's a bad idea on Fimo or Sculpey, but I didn't have any problems with paint sticking while I was painting them.

Looking great! Although I demand an Inquisitor's Retinue and an Ecto 1 to fight them!

Sorry, no credit to who? For what?

Edit: After a quick browse through the user list, I'm guessing you're talking about these? I hadn't actually seen them until just now. They're very cool though, so thank you for bringing them to my attention

Very neat! I like your original concept though. A model that looks as though it were materializing would be very cool.

So, Demon number 3 has his eye in, and I knocked together a couple more this afternoon... They're waiting on eyes and pustules, which will go in after the first bake.

These two were done with about a half and half mix of sculpey and fimo. This gave it a much better consistency to work with. Much firmer than the pure sculpey, but without the bounce of the pure fimo.

Very cool little sculpts. I really want to break into sculpting things more, this will be fun to watch for inspiration and stealing of tips and tricks along the way as you experiment more

You convinced me, i'm here. Maybe you'll even convert me to Nurgle, doubt it though.

Despite my dislike for Papa N i can see some great work so far. Keep it up man.

May i enquire as to which army these demons are for?

Initially they'll go into my Death Guard army... it's been waiting for Plaguebearers since 2nd edition

Eventually looking to expand into a fully-fledged Daemon army... if only for Apocalypse battles to run them alongside the Chaos Marines. We'll just have to see how many of them I can sculpt before I get sick and tired of them...

Got some interesting plans brewing for a Greater Daemon, but he'll wait until I'm a little more confident of my sculpting.

I'm eventually planning to have a bash at stand-ins for demons from all four powers, and maybe something generic if inspiration strikes.

There's also been an alternate power armour design brewing in my head for some time now... but that one will wait until I'm satisfied that I can actually sculpt it to some sort of reasonable standard. Demons are a good place to start since it doesn't really matter if they come out a little off-looking.

So, as per usual I have got myself all sidetracked with a bunch of other projects. So rather than have multiple blog threads running, I have decided to shift this little project over to my all-in-one Blog thread, which can be found here.
