Hello there Dakka!

This is my first post in this forum, so hit me with your best feedback! Just started 40k this year, and am loving the game, the modeling, and ofc the fluff! This is a conversion of Ragnar Blackmane, Wolf Lord and hero of the Space Wolves. I have been a huge fan of Ragnar since reading the novels, and I wanted to do something that not only represents him, but also his famous berserker whirlwind killing style. Hope you guys like, just need to get a bit of green stuff work to his pelt shoulder, which I will be working on over the next few days. Definitely looking forward to feedback!
[Thumb - 004.JPG]
Started off with some bits from citadel finecast Logan Grimnar. Cut off the Wolf helm and cloak. Carved the wolf helm to fit the shoulder, but still need some green stuff to sort it properly.

[Thumb - 005.JPG]
Took the back of a power hammer from the SW Termi set and carved it up to use for Ragnars other shoulder.

[Thumb - 012.JPG]
Thought this torso and belt were the closest to what Ragnar wears in the book covers, keeping the knife in for a little extra flavor, since in the book he keeps an iron knife. :)

[Thumb - 001.JPG]
Converted frostfang from a terminator power handle, 2x chain swords, and a power sword

[Thumb - 003.JPG]
Chose an off center pose, and have the rear leg in a "cocked for kicking" position, you will see why later!

[Thumb - 007.JPG]
Added head and ever reliable bolt pistol, head is from the SW Battleforce box

[Thumb - 012.JPG]
Green stuffed this wolf head onto the Termi shoulder pad.

[Thumb - 017.JPG]
Got the arm and shoulder pad on, looks a bit awkward, but that will be resolved later on with the flavour added hopefully

[Thumb - 019.JPG]
Added Logans cloak and modded the wolf helm over the shoulder pad. Sorry the view isnt good on this one, but I got tied up and forgot to take pictures, which is why the next one is ... well, how it is!

[Thumb - 020.JPG]
So added the tyranid in, chopped off his head and arms and added some gore to add to the decapitation scene. I feel like this worked really well toward giving the model movement

[Thumb - 036.JPG]
Final pic after adding in the small tyranid (kicking fodder!), some rocks for basing, and added the tyranid arms to the base and top of the sword in mid decapitation

Couple of extra shots here to show the (almost) finished product. Feedback, suggestions, and ideas welcome!

Shot of the backside, can see the decapitated tyranid head as it is carried forward by the sword momentum.

To be honest, I think the guant takes away from the pose of the model, just too much going on.

Still, I love the posing!

Love the mini, but am not a fan of enemies taking up too much of the base.

I would go down to the smaller base and scratch the gaunt.

I love the frostblade conversion, btw!

Having seen this up close, the Gaunt actually works really well with it! I think being all grey at the moment is causing it to look quite busy, but that won't be the case when painted.

Conversion itself is awesome, Deimne, looks really close to his illustration!

Got to say this looks more like a diorama piece than anything playable. It's just a bit too...busy for a gaming fig. The dynamism is definitely there though so, good job on that!

Thanks guys, really appreciate the feedback there. The idea I wanted to convey was Ragnars ferocity in combat and ability to flow from attack to attack without being impeded, as represented in the books. So he is essentially attacking 3 things at once ... the Nid that is being decapitated, the gaunt that is being punted, and whatever he is shooting at. I still am debating whether or not to take the gaunt out, the only thing I am worried about is a then awkward posture from his leg position.

As for a table piece, I will probably still try to use it as a table piece, hopefully without too much hate. I started this whole thing because I wasn't really fond of the GW Ragnar model, and I wanted him for my army. For such an iconic hero, you would think they would have a new model!

I think what you have here is a great diorama piece - really nice work.

I don't think it works as a tabletop figure though. I think if you made a second Ragnar with the same parts for a Tabletop model you'd have the best of both worlds.

That's really, really cool. The decapitation especially looks really well done.

That said, I agree that it could use a bit more focus, so critique mode activated. I agree that it's a bit busy, and I don't think it's just because of the amount of 'stuff' on the base. There's a lot going on, and I'd almost say he appears to be doing too much at once, with the kicking, the decapitating, and the shooting. I think it would be a more effective piece if it was a bit more focused, and I'd definitely recommend focusing on the decapitation as it's already very well done and probably the most visually interesting part of the whole assembly.

I do agree that having the whole gaunt right up front hides a lot of Ragnar. The first thing that sprang to my mind that might help clear that up while remaining cool is to maybe try modelling the gaunt so it looks like it's scrambling 'up' the side of the base towards Ragnar. You'd still easily be able to do the casual decapitation easily, and if the body lines of the gaunt are pointed at Ragnar, it will naturally draw the viewers' eyes to him as well.

Okay. So. Right. I do think you've done a great job so far anyway, especially being so new to the game. Keep up the good work!
