My friend Grey Therion has been telling me about these mini-1K tournaments that they've been having at one of our LGS. Basically, there were 3 games played on 4'x4' tables. Each game was 1-hour only. Normally, I've always been too busy to go. But then one day after coming back from an out-of-town business trip, I found that I had some time so I went to check it out. I decided to bring something unconventional, something that I've never really tried before....IG Air Cavalry.
Now I haven't played my guards for over a year now, not since their 5th edition codex first came out, but I had an itching to take them out of storage. Normally I don't run Air Cav - I only own 3 vendettas/valkyries - however, at 1K 3 vends fit perfectly. I wonder how rusty my Guard skills are. I guess I will see.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1000 Imperial Guard Air Cavalry (My list)
Company Command Squad - Astropath, 1x Autocannon
Veteran Squad - 3x Meltas
Veteran Squad - 3x Meltas
Veteran Squad - 3x Meltas
Vendetta
Vendetta
Vendetta
Leman Russ Demolisher - Lascannon, Plasma Sponsoons

1K is a wacky points level. Some armies do better than others. The only problem I see with your list is how it will match up against horde or Space Wolves triple Missile-spam Long Fang squads. It would be an interesting match up if you faced 10 Paladins. Eldar would also be a good match up.
I look forward to the results.

Game #1 vs Battle Sisters
In Game #1, I was pitted against whitespirit's new Battle Sisters. I didn't get his list and I'm not too familiar with the new Battle Sisters, but I believe his list was something like this:
1000 Battle Sisters
BTW, Andrew, if you are reading this, please PM me with your list or you can just post it here in this thread.
Jacobus
Posse of 5x Crusaders & 5x Deathcult Assassins in Rhino
St. Celestine
10x Battle Sisters - 2x Multi-meltas (I know 1 of them is a multi-melta, the other may have been a regular melta)
10x Battle Sisters - 2x Multi-meltas
Exorcist
Exorcist
5x Retributors - 4x Heavy Bolters
--------------------------------------------------------------
Mission: Annihilation
Deployment: Spearhead
1st Turn: Battle Sisters
--------------------------------------------------------------
Deployment:
Sisters deployment. The lone sister is his St. Celestine.
My deployment.
Overview of the board.
Before my opponent begins his turn, I do my Scout moves. I flat out all 3 vendettas to the other side of the board.
I fail to seize the initiative and we begin.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Battle Sisters 1
He advances his units. His exorcists are scorching hot. He gets 5-6 shots for each one and they each down a vendetta, even with cover. 1 gets wrecked and the other explodes. My veteran squad then runs off the board.
Wow...crippled and lost 3KP's all in 1 go. Ouch.
Grey Knights 1
I back up my last vendetta just slightly to get out of his battle sisters multi-melta range. Demolisher advances.
In shooting, one of his exorcist makes 2 cover saves against my vendetta. The other is just outside of my demolisher cannon range and I miss with my demolisher's lascannon. Finally, my PCS autocannon and meltavets both fail to stop Jacobus' rhino ( BTW, he popped smokes on his turn).
Let me sum up my shooting - fail.
Battle Sisters 2
His shooting continues to be hot. It only takes 1 exorcist to expode my last bird.
Celestine flames and then assaults my meltavets. She wipes them out.
Battle Sisters: 5, IG: 0
Grey Knights 2
If I don't do something soon, it's looking more and more like a route.
I try moving my demolisher but just immobilize it on terrain.
Good thing for turrets. I fire my demolisher at his rhino, placing the large blast marker on the rear of the rhino so that it also covered most of his deathstar unit as well. I also fire 1 plasma cannon, which scatters off target. The demolisher shot is a direct hit though. I only manage to immobilize his transport. The S10 AP2 blast also hits 9 guys....and he only loses 2!?!
Finally, I fire 3 meltas from my meltavets into his rhino...and only weapon destroy it. Man, I suck today.
Battle Sisters 3
Uh oh. Celestine goes after my command squad....
....and his uber-squad after my meltavets.
His battle sisters is within multi-melta double-tap range and blows the top off of my demolisher.
Deathcultists make it into assault with a 6" difficult terrain move....
....and make it back into cover with their consolidation move.
Celestine makes it into assault with my CCS....
....and routes them after only killing 1 guy. Did I tell you that I suck today? Well, in case you missed it, I suck today.
Battle Sisters: 7, IG: 0
Grey Knights 3
With only an immobilized, turretless demolisher remaining, I concede the game.
Victory to the Battle Sisters!!!
Game 2 coming up next....

Yeah, 1K games go by pretty quickly, especially if you bring mech and are a fast player.
I almost had time after the game for both a manicure and a pedicure.....j.k.

Game #3 vs Black Templar
With a major loss and a bye, I wasn't going anywhere far. I was just playing for fun now. When I saw opponent's army, I knew that he was going to be in for a rough one. My army was just made to table an army like his.
1000 Black Templars
This is his list as far as I know.
Emperor's Champion - Vow with Preferred Enemy
5x Assault Terminators - 3x LC's, 2x TH/ SS
Vendread -Assault Cannon, Heavy Flamer
6x BT Dudes - 1x Lascannon, 1x Plasmagun
6x BT Dudes - 1x Lascannon, 1x Plasmagun
Land Raider Crusader - Multi-melta
--------------------------------------------------------------
Mission: Seize Ground - 5 Objectives
Deployment: Dawn of War
1st Turn: Imperial Guards (me)
--------------------------------------------------------------
Deployment:
Map of the terrain. Yes, it's the exact same one I played on in game #1. Red beads are the objectives.
I only deploy my HQ. Everything else will be coming in on Turn 1.
My opponent deploys his 2 troops...out in the open. BTW, we played those hills as TLOS hills. There were no area terrain on this icy planet.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Grey Knights 1
Because of DoW, I don't even bother shooting. I just move my birds flat-out for the cover.
Black Templar 1
My opponent moves the rest of his army in...just 2 units.
Something tells me that this is going to be another short one.
Grey Knights 2
I shift my birds a little and advance my demolisher. I then focus-fire all 3 vendettas onto his troop unit out in the open. Funny, I thought they were just there a minute ago.
My demolisher fires at his LRC but is just out of range with my cannon. Its lascannon misses.
Black Templar 2
And they shall know no fear. LRC and vendread advances.
His LRC multi-melta downs one of my vendettas. 3 vets die in the explosion.
His lascannon crusader squad shakes another vendetta.
Grey Knights 3
I flat-out the shaken bird and shuffle the other 2 vehicles (combat speed).
Vendetta takes out 2 troops. Autocannon command squad shakes his vendread (it was actually a stun, but he had extra armor). Demolisher scatters off his LRC and does nothing to it.
Black Templar 3
BT advances again. LRC moves at combat speed. Vendread takes a smoke break.
His shooting does nothing.
Grey Knights 4
Meltavets back up slightly, concerned about the assault.
I do the vendetta-shuffle. But by moving my right vendetta, I have actually given my opponent a cover save against my shooting.
I fire both birds at his troop squad. He makes all 4 cover saves. Demolisher shakes his LRC only (tanks to extra armor).
Black Templar 4
LRC advances cautiously. Its multi-melta is just within double-tap range and pops my demolisher. That's twice now that I've left myself vulnerable to multi-meltas.
His single lascannon pops my other vendetta. Another 3 vets die in the explosion.
I never realized how fragile AV12 vehicles are, especially without cover. They kill my AV12 birds so easily, yet I can't even kill a rhino. This is exactly why I play MSU and spam those vehicles.
Grey Knights 5
Overview of the beginning of Turn 5.
Meltavets and last vendetta go after his troops. After 3 twin-linked lascannons, 2 meltas and some flashlights, I only manage to kill a grand total of 1 BT guy. He made all his armor and all but 1 cover save.
Black Templar 5
Terminators go in for the kill.
His vendread gets ready to have BBQ and cooks all but 2 melta guys. I then fail morale and they fall back.
No contest. Well, actually, he did contest (my objective), but the battle was a not contest.
We roll to see if the game continues and the die comes up a 1. Game over.
I've only got 1 objective, despite having more troops and the mobility advantage.
He's also got 1 objective as well, claimed by the super squad that just wouldn't die.
Draw!!!

My matchups were good. I thought I should've had both of the games that I played. But today was just not my day. Triple LF-spam is kind of rare at 1K. Even I didn't run 3 LF's. It really unbalances the army because you would be weak with the troops. In any tournaments, troops should be the #1 priority IMO.
My list would've probably messed up Draigowing pretty badly especially since they won't be able to afford both Draigo and a shrouding librarian at 1K.
Against horde orks, I'd probably just zip around flat-out to distract them.
loota boy wrote:Might wanna splurge on heavy bolter sponsons in case someone just brings like 120 orks.
I've already changed my list after this tourney to include more troops (an infantry platoon) and some flamers. While the heavy bolter sponsoons are great, I think my #1 priority is to get more scoring bodies in there.
loota boy wrote:Wow... you got raped hard... bad luck man..
Yeah, my butt still hurts. 1K is a whole different game than the usual 2-2.5K I normally play. But I'll adjust for next time.

It's actually really fun. I like these short, quick games for a change. That draw should have been a domination by my army, but today just wasn't my day.
Yeah, he was using the Warmachine minis for his crusaders. They looked pretty good. I may borrow his idea for my crusaders, though I was originally thinking about using Warriors of Chaos figures as crusaders.

Yeah it did go very fast didnt it, and list is correct except one SoB squad only had one multi-melta. I will admit that I did indeed get lucky. Taking out 2 vendettas first turn was unexpected ,but admittedly I had nothing else to really shoot at cause the Russ front is a AV14 and my Exorcist wouldnt stand much chance doing anything to that.
I was pretty excited to play jim. I really enjoy your reports and your pictures always come out top notch.
Yeah I think the only diff choice I might have made is maybe start with one of the three groups that were in the vendettas deployed because with scouting you can have a good chance to flank with those meltagun troops and shoot up my exorcists.

I've been doing too many GK reports lately. Lol.
Yeah, I know about the skimmer/board-edge rule, which is why I had all my skimmers come in by moving flat-out in the DoW mission (game #3) so that no part of them were hanging off the board edge.
Zid wrote:Yikes! Crappy luck JY! That first game was an absolute shooting fish in a barrel scenario :(
Skill and lists can only take you so far. The rest of the way depends on dice. Interestly enough, the times that I've played against vendettas at 2K, I've always had trouble taking them down before. Then at 1K where there is supposed to be much less AT, my birds get dropped like a bad habit. Go figure.

Good game Andrew. I thought I could've had you. But then, your shooting said otherwise. St. Celestine certainly is a pain-in-the-arse and one of the better HQ's in the game. And your exorcists were on fire.
Originally, I was thinking of putthing my army in reserves (the vendettas, at least). I think that may have been a better tactic, as I could have at least had some type of mini-alpha strike. It's also why I took the astropath, but oh well, I'll change up my tactics next time.
Exorcists never really were my target #1. Usually, I go after your mobility. What's even nastier than exorcists are sisters closeby with meltas. But in this game, those exorcists of yours shot me up real good. Better than in almost any other game I've played against Witchhunters. They did an excellent job this game.

So, 20 battle sisters are marching on the field without a rhino... hmmm... there is only 1 person that I know of who does that! This is the first time I got to read a battle report where I know how both players play, unfortunately it was over so quick it didn't matter! The long range AP 1 weapons had to be shut down asap, anything that flats out basically gets wrecked on a 3+ on the penetration chart!!! SabrX: 1K is a wacky points level. Some armies do better than others. From what I have seen, Sisters, Mech Eldar, Foot Eldar and Paladins scale perfectly at 1K. You win some, you lose some. Your list and strategy can only get you so far. The rest depends on the law of averages.
I wasn't too concerned about Celestine....if only my vends had survived.
Yeah, my demolisher didn't do too good this time around. I'll still keep using it, only next time, I'll going to drop the lascannon and plasma sponsoons and just keep it plain. Then I'm also going to swap out 1 vet squad and get an infantry platoon. I like the vendettas for their mobility.

I think I should have came in from reserves and outflanked my vends. At least that would've given me first-strike.

Nids also play well at the level. At 1K or less, people start having problems dealing with T6 6W monsters that can make more troops.
