Janthkin (Kevin) called me up and wanted to play a game of Apoc. I was happy to oblige. Normally, I like bringing nids or daemons to games of Apoc, but since I just played my daemons in the last Apoc game (battle report here) and my opponent is bringing nids, the next logical choice for me would be to bring my Grey Knights. While I have a lot of experience with them, I have never used them in Apoc before, so I figured now was as good a time as any to do so.
While Kevin is a very good player, this will be his very first game of Apoc ever and he is going up against the master. In this game, he is the seal and I am the shark. Does he have what it takes to take down my Warhound Titan? Stick around and find out. All I will tell you is that I am going out tonight, and I am going clubbing.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hive Fleet Janthkin, on its way to Planet Arcadia, has just sent 2 splinter fleets to each of its 2 moons. With almost no warning, the inhabitants of Arcadia are as good as doomed. However, unbeknownst to both the inhabitants of Arcadia and the Hive Mind, one of Arcadia's moon, Luna, happens also to be one of a few secret training bases for the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Malleus. And it is the smaller battle here that may well determine the fate of the entire colony on Arcadia....

Mission: 6 Objectives
Initiative: We both bidded 30 mins for deployment so we dice off. I then win the roll to go 2nd.
Strategic Assets: While I don't normally play strategic assets (unless they are part of a formation or unit special rule), Kevin wanted to give them a try. So we both pick 1 asset.
Grey Knights: Legion Relic (Draigo)
Basically, the bearer of this asset strikes at 2x his normal number of attacks and at S10. Thus, I've just made my most killy guy even more killier. However, if he should die, I count as having 1 less objective. Thus, I need to make sure he doesn't die.
Tyranids: Blind Barrage
Bascially, you drop 2 counters, which could be up to 36" away from each other. Enemy models then cannot draw LOS through the line formed by these counters for 1 game turn. It's especially nasty against very shooty armies.
Luckily for me, I'm not very shooty....except for my Warhound titan.
Grey Knights: Flank March
While I don't normally condone this asset, fortunately for me, I get it for free from the Land Raider Prometheus. It makes this tank a very, very good buy. It's a good thing for my opponent I'm not a pure assault army. Giving Flank March to assault armies (like nids) can be very broken.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Deployment:
Map of the terrain:
2 objectives in my deployment zone (the Flamers of Tzeentch models).
2 objectives in the tyranid's deployment zone.
And 2 objectives in the center (No-man's-land).
Tyranid deployment. Although Kevin wanted to go second, I force him to go first.
In reserves: 4 genestealers, ymgarls, zoanthropes Deathleaper and the Doom. His deathleaper makes my librarian LD7.
My deployment. Paladins with Draigo and librarian as far forwards as possible. Land raider Achilles with soladin screens out my land raider Prometheus (with purifiers). The rest of my army stays in reserves.
Draigo uses Grand Strategy to re-roll all 1's to wound for these 3 units - paladins and 2 incinerator purifiers.
There is no stealing the initiative in Apoc and so we begin.

The hierodule looks good on paper, but he isn't all that good in practical use. For only 550 more, get the Hierophant. That's a much better gargantuan.

A lot! Also, as you can see from my deployment, I make a mistake.
I shouldn't have deployed the librarian with the squad. Instead, I should've left him in the land raider achilles to protect him from Shadows in the Warp.

Yeah, I'm thinking like most people, I've seen the titan, the Land Raiders and mass of Grey Knights and voted for... Grey Knights.

If I'm not mistaken, the turbo laser thingy is strength D right, so thats d6 auto wounds to his only gargantuan creature, which will just get force weaponed in cc.
As much as I hate to say it, GK wins.

Actually, destroyer weapons (Strength D) only cause 1W to gargantuans. Gargantuans are immune to ID and thus, no force weapon for his hierodule.
Here's a particularly nasty tyranid trick against the paladins. Swarmlord gives Preferred Enemy to his hierodule and flyrant paroxyses my paladin unit. Hierodule then charges in and does its S10 Stomp attack, attacking every paladin in the unit!
As long as he can survive Draigo's 8x S10 hits first (due to my Legion Relic).

Yeah I was gonna say that, but on top of things people seem to forget Shadow in the Warp. The Librarian's pretty much screwed in that respect, and if the Nids can take out Draigo then I think they'll be able to win it.

Tyranids 1
Tervigon spawns 7 termagants and go dry. They move up to screen off my paladins. Gargoyles then move up to form a 2nd screen for his monstrous creatures. My LD7 librarian fails to stop his tervigon from casting FNP.
He concentrates almost the entirety of his army at my paladins....12 S8 shots, 24 twin-linked S6 shots, 1 large blast, 12 S10 shots and a whole bunch of fleshborers from his gants and gargoyles. When the smoke clears, only 2 paladins are down (from insta-gibbing shots) and another has 1W. I believe the Apothecary upgrade has just paid for itself during this 1 turn of shooting.
His 2 tyrannofexes shoot at my land raider achilles and immobilize it.
Grey Knights 1
Paladins advance. Land raider Prometheus scoots to the right 6" and blasts at his termagant screen. Despite them going to ground, I kill all but 1. I love its Battle Auspex, which reduces enemy cover saves by -1.
Paladins don't fire for fear of killing too many gargoyles. But now with the gant screen gone, I am free to charge his gargoyles. I multi-assault both the gargoyles and the lone termagant....
....and easily wipe them out. He does manage to do 1W to my paladins however (not that my paladins care that much). Draigo didn't even get to fight!
That may have just been one of the quickest Turn-1's I've ever played in Apoc.
Tyranids 2
Flyrant deepstrikes in but twists his ankles on some terrain, taking 1W.
Genestealers outflank onto my deployment edge and run.
Same goes for this unit of stealers.
1 unit of stealers does outflank onto his own board edge. The Doom walks on as well.
Monstrous creatures go in for the kill.
Swarmlord runs towards the action and gives his Barbed Hierodule Preferred Enemy.
Tervigon moves towards the objective, casting FNP on itself.
I believe it is his tyrannofex that blows up my Prometheus, though it could've been his hierodule (don't quite remember). 2 purifiers die in the explosion.
He pumps 30 TL-S6 shots, 12 S8 shots, 14 S10 shots, 2 large S5 blasts and 1 poisoned template into my paladins....and only do 1W to them! He then charges in. My librarian casts Sanctuary and succeeds on a 7! However, he perils in the attempt and takes 1W.
Once again, Draigo fails to make it into combat due to a mistake on my part regarding his placement. I fail to cast both Might of Titans from my librarian and Hammerhand from Draigo due to Shadows.
Also, his flyrant tries to paroxyse my deathstar unit but fails on an 11!
Even though his carnifexes are attacking at I4 (thanks to frag spines and furious charge), he whiffs badly. His Prefered Enemy hierodule also flubs its attacks. Overall, he just manages to kill my warding stave (who is also my apothecary) and librarian. I, on the other hand, force weapon both his carnifexes and his tervigon to death as well as put 1W on his t-fex.
I also cause another 2W to his tyrannofex and 2W to his hierodule after No Retreat saves. Paladins break away from his hierodule as I cannot lock it in combat.
Turn 3 coming up next....

Oops. Forget about the grey knights Turn 2.
Grey Knights 2
I use Flank March to move my Redeemer with purifiers deep into the tyranid's deployment zone. My flamestorm cannon only manages to kill 1 stealer.
Dreadknight flank marches in and goes after his tervigon.
Raven comes in from my own board edge and out comes my purgation unit. They would BBQ all but 5 stealers.
Warhound also comes in from my deployment zone.
Soladin disembarks from the Achilles to go after his flyrant.
A heavy incinerator from my dreadknight and 2 destroyer shots from my warhound wipes out his tervigon and termagants.
I drop 4 mindstrike missiles on the swarmlord but only do 3W as 1 scatters way off. My titan then finishes him off with another 2 destroyer pie plates.
The warhound "accidentally" steps on the stealers in his way and squishes 3.
My paladins finish off his t-fex in combat.
And screen off his hierodule with their consolidation.
Finally, my soladin charges his flyrant. He miraculously survives the Preferred Enemy tyrant and dishes out 2W to the flyrant. However, I fail to force weapon it to death due to Shadows.
Tyranids 3
Overview of the beginning of Turn 3.
It is here where Janthkin reveals his strategic asset - Blind Barrage. He drops 2 markers in front of my titan and blocks my LOS. But it is already too late as my titan has already done his damage.
Ymgarls come out of the terrain where I killed his tervigon.
He spores his zoanthropes to try to take out my titan.
He then drops 3 meiotic spores on top of my clustered purgation unit. I go-to-ground in area terrain and survive 15 S5 AP3 hits and well as a bunch of S4 hits, losing only 1 guy.
Stealers scramble onto the objective and area terrain.
Other stealers and Doom advance towards the objective.
His hierodule tank shocks through my paladins. It then fires at both my redeemer and stormraven with 6 S10 shots each....
....stunning my redeemer....
....and blowing up the raven. The purgation justicar dies in the explosion.
Finally, zoans fire at my titan, destroyer one of his guns and causing 1 structure point of damage (it has 3).
We then go onto assault. Ymgarls assault the dreadknight, gaining +1A.
It is a tied combat as we both do 2W each.
Hierodule assault my paladins, hoping to stomp them to death....
....but Draigo slays him first.
Finally, his flyrant finishes off my soladin.
Grey Knights 3
Empty razorback comes in near my purgation squad.
1 unit of purifiers come in from my opponent's deployment edge. The redeemer then scoots over and disembarks the purifiers inside.
And for added insurance, Crowe also comes in from my opponent's deployment zone.
Land raider comes in behind the flyrant and genestealers and again, I disembark my purifiers.
Dreadknight comes in from my own deployment zone and goes after his stealers on my objective.
Finally, purifiers walk on and goes after his zoanthropes. The rhino comes in separately and pops smokes.
Warhound then moves forwards, tankshocking his stealers.
Purifiers move towards his stealers.
Finally, Draigo splits off from his squad to go after the t-fex. Paladins then go towards the hive guards and center objective.
Notice anything missing? You know, where his flyrant used to be, courtesty of a lascannon to the back?
Triple incinerators wipe out a lot of stealers and breaking their unit coherency.
Incinerator purifiers shoot at the Doom and take off 3W as well as roast a couple of stealers. I then take out all but 6 stealers with my psycannon purifiers. BTW, my purifiers past their LD against the Doom's power.
My titan and psyback (psybolt razorback) concentrates on his unit of stealers on my objective and kills 4, leaving 1 remaining.
Heavy incinerator takes out 4 stealers. Psycannon purifiers put 1W on the zoans.
I assault both his t-fex and the hive guards and wipe out both units.
Because there were gaps in the genestealers' line, my purifiers are able to assault his Doom....
....and kill it.
Finally, purifiers assault his zoanthropes to keep them from shooting at my titan again next turn, and my warhound steps on some more genestealers.
After combat and No Retreat saves, there is only 1 zoanthrope left (with 1W only). 1 stealer gets crushed by my titan.
Tyranids 4
The game is all but over. This will be the final game turn. The only thing my opponent can try to do is to contest.
Genestealers go after my purifiers.
Deathleaper comes in to contest an objective.
Stealers try to move back into coherency but are still too far away. Thus, they can't even assault.
Believe or not, I actually lose 1 purifier to Deathleaper's flesh hooks.
Hive guards insta-gib 1 paladin.
Not much left to do but assault.
It is a tied combat.
Here his stealers help out the lone zoan.
I kill his zoan and wipes out 4 purifiers.
The last purifier would then die to No Retreat and stealers consolidate.
Finally, my dreadknight kills another 2 ymgarls.
Grey Knights 4
Dreadknight goes after 1 of his 4 remaining troops....
....and roasts 3 stealers.
Psyback goes after the other one....
....and does.
Paladins claim the middle objective and get ready to take out his hive guards. But before they get the chance, the warhound shoots at the hive guards, kill 1 and forces them to fall back and out of contesting range.
My other purifiers get ready to BBQ his 3rd unit of stealers....
....and they are no more.
Purifiers get into their rhino and go to claim the objective.
Dreadknight then assaults his stealers and wipes them out.
Other dreadknight kills another 3 ymgarls.
Purifiers and stealers continue battling out underneath the helipad. It is now one-on-one.
Finally, I assault his contesting Deathleaper.
It's safe to say that he won't be coming back.
---------------------------------------------------------------
With that we call the game.
I've got an objective in my opponent's deployment zone..
Paladins secure the center objective.
And I've also got an objective in my deployment zone.
Tyranids have no objectives.
Victory for the Grey Knights!!!

Yeah, Flank March without any limitations could be considered broken. Just look at what I did to those genestealers. Because of it, the Land Raider Prometheus have become IMO one of the best land raiders, heck, regular tanks in the game of Apoc (the Prometheus gives the army Flank March). I think next time, it'll be best to put a limit on how many units may Flank March.
As an experienced tyranid player myself, I tend to shy away from using too many stealers. While they are good, when they outflank they wil usually come in without any support. That means no FNP, Preferred Enemy, synapse and psychic defenses. As you know, my favorite formation is the Endless Swarm and in my next tyranid battle, you will see even bigger swarms.
It's good to be able to use incinerators again. I used to love using them in the old daemonhunters codex but nowadays, psycannons have become just too good.
And the Brotherhood Banner is just broken against nids. As my opponent likes to say - the new grey knights are better geared to fight tyranids than they are against daemons.

Actually, my previous Apoc battle - 10K Chaos vs Chaos - was kind of lop-sided as well. Grey Knights match up well against nids because nids don't have any strength D guns. Paladins don't like those much.
As a Apoc tyranid player as well, this is very disconcerting to me. The evolution of our Apoc gaming group has gone from single Warhound to a bunch of titans now. There's 3 Reaver titans, several Warhounds and many baneblades now. And someone is also building a Warlord titan as well! How can a tyranid player keep up with this Arms Race? The Imperials are piling up the Destroyer guns and there's not much we can do.....or is there?
Let's just say I'm stockpiling my big scaries for our next megapocalypse game.

Yeah, shouldn't have brought my Warhound against a new Apoc player, and especially one without any defense to Strength D weaponry. But I just hardly ever get to use my Warhound....

Definitely a bit one-sided there, and a big thanks to Jim for walking me through my first game of Apoc. I had some vague concerns about Destroyer weapons, but I've only come across them in the context of Adepticon's Gladiator tournament, where smaller boards, lower point levels, and carefully-crafted missions tend to mitigate the impact of titans (2008 notwithstanding).
Sadly, the Hierodule is not all it could be. Toe-to-toe with the Warhound alone, it might have a chance, particularly if it's close enough to charge. But while nearly all Jim's weapons could hurt my Hierodule, very few of my weapons could hurt his Warhound.
Charging the Paladins was a silly thing to do, but I like the cinematics of it at the time.
And if nothing else, I can take comfort in knowing that my army was fully painted & pretty!

Next time, try a Hierophant. It's nigh unstoppable against a Warhound. A good counter to GK is endless swarm + Trygon combo.

As I was telling Jim, I don't LIKE the Hierophant model; it's spindly, and completely off-theme for the Tyranids as currently modeled. But rules-wise, it's a fantastic buy, and T10 means you don't have to worry about small-arms fire in quite the same way as the Hierodule does. Frankly, I'd just propose that the Hierophant really should be T9, 2+ save, for the same cost.
I'm never going to get to try Endless Swarm, as I'm never going to buy/build/paint 60+ hormagaunts. I've learned to accept this. Someday, though, I may pick up a Harridan, as I do like Gargoyles quite a bit.

The only army that doesn't care about destroyer weaponry are daemons, as they are the only army left that are army-wide Eternal Warriors with Invuln saves. Against any other army, Destroyer is king.
But actually, I was concerned about your hierodule which was why I reserved my titan. As I had wanted to go 2nd, leaving him on the board and vulnerable to 16 S10 shots is not a very smart idea (12 from hierodule and 4 from t-fexes). The last time someone did it against my nids in Apoc, I blew away his Warhound on turn 1 with 16 S10 shots (though it was from my bio-titan instead).
The hierodule is definitely not the most efficient gargant. Lucky for you, grey knights don't run missile-spam, as that can kill it just as easily. Unfortunately, they have force weapons, cleansing flame and paladins instead.
If the stars were to align, you might have pulled off the assault on my paladins. However, you really needed Paroxysm to go off. Also, it might have been a better idea to assault with just the hierodule and do the stomp attack. Draigo at WS1, even with 9 attacks, might not have finished off the hierodule. With Preferred Enemy, there's a good chance you may have probably killed at least half the squad.
Your army is the first Apoc army that I've played against that is fully painted, and it is a fine-looking army indeed. That's a rare thing indeed in games of Apoc. Bravo.

The hierophant is just a beast. It would kill the warhound in a heartbeat, though your warhound lasted quite a while against mine. The Endless Swarm is just a great formation that I always use in my Apoc games. It is IMO the best tyranid formation though it could get pricey. The formation with 60 termagants and 60 hormagants with upgrades comes out to be 1220pts (all with adrenal glands and toxin sacs), but I think it is well worth it.
Though my opponent is limited by his models. Perhaps in future games, if Kevin wants to borrow some of my models, he can do so.

The bio-titan is actually quite a nice model. I actually like it more than both hierodules, and I am talking about model-wise, not stats-wise. Though it doesn't hurt that stats-wise, he's a stud. BTW, he is T9. You're probably thinking about his Wounds, which is W10. Anyways, his carapace is the inspiration for the tervigon and tyrannofex in the current tyranid codex.
The Harridan based off of the new Imperial Armour Apoc 2nd edition book (2011, not the 2008 one) is a stud as well. I'm going to get one when I can. The model is awesome. Now he's got rules to match as well.
