Psychic Prisoner aboard a Black Ship

Hi guys! Just joined
Im 22 years old and from Denmark. I love to paint and play 40k with my friends. And this will be the blog for my Grey Knight army.
This is not my first army. I had a Blood Ravens army, a little Black Templars stuff and around 5k of Ultramarines(YES i love Space Marines).
You might have seen this stuff on GWs blog or another forum.
Since this is a P&M blog I should show you some pics I guess..
Well here you go!

The whole thing

The 3 Dread Knights

Terminators

My kinda different Paladins

My 3 converted HQs(Libraian, Count as Draigo and Brother Captain/Grand Master)

Count as Draigo pics and close ups

And Im currently working on painting some tanks and what not. A Storm Raven is in the works but it has been for quite a while though.
Well what do you think?
For more pics go here

Hello and welcome to Dakka, remember to duck on and then for all the boltrounds.. or when ComissarKhain's burnagrots gets loose among the threads..

Your grey knights look quite good, some of the pics suffer a bit from flare (metallics are so sensitive to that, can be a nightmare to minimize it).
A decent job on the Forceweapons but I feel that you could have worked a little more depth into the models. The cloth and 'bone' parts look very flat and while the red suffers less in this area it too could use some additional attention.
Overall it's nice work both with the painting and the dynamic posing of the models

I have a little hobby-thread going in the P&M section. Some say it's the best blog on Dakka, some don't agree, most belive it would be better if I finished at least one project some time this century and not just kept starting new ones.
Check it out, you just might like it.

Thanks for the comments guys. Much appreciated
STC: The glare may be a little worse because of the satin varnish I give them. But nontheless I will try and get it toned down! And the thing about the bone/cloth and reds: Can you be more specific on where its needs some attention? Im Thinking the heraldry sheilds and purity seals for the red and skulls "name tags" for the bone/cloth thing.
I should be giving it more attetion. Which I hope I find time to after I have painted the Storm Raven. I hope an extra highlight will do the trick

Alright, First off: Never -Ever- use satin or gloss varnish on 'cloth' and other non-laquered or 'dry' areas and if you spray the model with it go back and paint it over with a coat of Matt Varnish to dull it down. On the whole I would not reccomend using gloss varnish on any surface besides areas that simulate either glass (or crystal) or wet surfaces.

You have a very bright red on the whole area (I am guessing Blood Red or equivalent?) so you need to mix up some 50:50 blood red / red gore and do a broad shading, then a careful spotshading with pure red gore and a thin brush. possibly a watered down wash of Baal Red on top of that to bring the colours together a bit.
As for the bone and cloth I would reccomend to re-do them entirely since they are not on flat areas and as such are very tricky to shade down from a bright colour. Take the parchment and bookpages through Tallarn Flesh -> ogryn flesh wash -> tallarn flesh -> tallarn flesh/ denieb stone 50:50 -> denieb stone -> watered down skull white. Scribble on textlines with a fine detail brush and watered chaos black, you want it to be a bit faded since pure and covering black really stands out and it does not blend well with the greater whole.
Cloth through the same steps but basecoat it in a mid-tone brown and exchange tallarn flesh for a light brown colour depending on wich tone you prefer on the cloth and use Devlan Mud instead of ogryn flesh.

With the bone I'd go the grey-scale version basecoating with a 50:50 mix of scorched brown/ codex grey, -> a badab black wash -> highlight with previous mix -> Codex Grey -> Fortress grey -> 50:50 Fortress grey / skull white -> watered down skull white as final highlight.

With all the steps above: Water your paints, it's better it's a bit thin and needs two applications than too thick. You want a slight glaze-effect here so the tone of the layer beneath carries through slightly.

STC: Thanks for the input. Most of what youre saying is repainting the whole area. Which I can tell you now: I wont. That said I will go over the mentioned areas agian and give them some more attention.
And off course I do water my paints down. If I havent they would have looked like a giant blob

About the satin spray. They are only getting a light spray and the shinyness is not really noticable in real life.
Im used to work with that spray so I probably wont change to a matt anytime soon.
I guess it comes down to personal preference. Its only really the cape on draigo thats really shining.

Again: Thanks for all the input guys. Critisim is just as good as applause

Heh, it's just a friendly suggestion. When you see something nice you want to share how to make it better.
And I know you water your paints, it's just my hobby-horse that I ride around everytime I talk about paint, I am a little insane in that regard. Call it a hobbyist-Tic.
