Subject: Alternative non-mecha non-giant-robot Riptide??
Here's my problem. I like tau, but I don't like Japanese anime Gundam-style mecha. (I know, I know). So, to try and put this thread on the line of discussing real alternatives...,
What can I convert that doesn't look like a giant battle suit/mecha??
The only thing I've ever seen is this monstrosity from Chapterhouse/Paulson, but it's a little expensive at $285
The problem with the above links by barzam is height I think, people may accuse that they are modelled for advantage? But look wise Ithink mahbe they are a little to square and boxy? Just my opinion

That thing in the OP is also maybe the size of 3-4 riptides sadly. Now Tau suits borrow a bit from Macross and although you don't like the japanese anime mecha, they do have the monster. The problem is finding one to the right scale.

The Tau army is based on Mecha and Japanese style, so it is difficult to find a non-Mecha Mecha.
Maybe sculpt a big Krootmonster (or take a big Gnarloc if you don't mind loosing height).
All other alternatives are giant mecha, including Warmachine from Iron Man.
Do you like the Wraithknight? It would be relatively easy to tau-ify that beast I think. Shorten the legs a bit, beef the limbs up somewhat, add some seriously big jet turbines as a jetpack and jobsagoodun
Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Yeah,
I played around with photoshop and made a giant yellow robot!
Are you sure you don't want a riptide! I think after you've made a few adjustments this is the best riptide out there!
My first choice would be a Battletech model of some kind. I've always been a much bigger fan of American style mechs (i.e. giant lumbering walking tanks). Too bad there's no "in between" kits that aren't either tiny game models of dubious casting quality or massive titan sized custom built monstrosities.
That said, I've got my Riptide on order. I don't think it looks that bad. The only thing i really don't like is the fancy shield generator.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Someone over at ATT suggested using a bunch of drones like a swarm or a few recon drones as a count as.

Wanting a robot that still fits the Tau look and Riptide size but doesn't look like a Japanese anime Gundam-style mecha will be an uphill struggle. I like Kroothawk's idea of a giant Krooty beasty, although a Riptide-sized organic walking Kroot seems unlikely.
The Tau fondness for hiring mercenaries is probably your best solution - fluffwise, they've hired some alien mercenary robots (counting-as Riptides) that don't look anything like Tau machines.
A highly detailed unpainted plastic model kit of Metal Gear REX in 1/100 scale. Will stand about 8.66 inches tall (22cm) when assembled. Articulated after assembly! Base is included, as shown here.
How tall is a riptide?
If you get this I'd have to make a solid snake character!
Panic...

Easy. Find a way to attach the gun and shield directly onto the body instead of on limbs. Maybe remove the head. Your riptide now looks like a bipedal tank.
Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

That metal gear Rex looks pretty awesome.

That thing is 22cm too. Same height but its quite wide and hard to hide. Never mind. finding something to hide the riptide behind is hard anyway.
I also vote for a giant Kroot monster. I was actually about to begin making one to use as a Riptide, but then the Eldar codex came out and he's going to be a Wraithknight instead!
