I have had it confirmed more by what was not said and a slip up by a GW employee who will remain nameless that there will be no Games Day this year. Has anyone else heard more on this, the european ones certainly aren't going ahead. I am curious as to what will happen to Golden Demon too if there is no games day this year, I have heard various speculations but has anyone heard anything concrete?

I hate to sound like a broken "hate" record, but I'm not surprised the event was axed. Last year was barely an event if the first-hand tales said anything.

I'm sure at a GW meeting someone said "so we've reduced Games Day to just sales of our products? Well why not just have people buy the stuff online instead?" and the deal was done.

GW HQ in Germany confirmed that it ceased to exist and therefore can't organise a GD in Germany

Having heard reports from last years GD in UK, it wasn't quite living then either, but more or less a no effort event too late to be officially cancelled.

Very true. The last games day in Chicago was so lame I spent more time at the fantasy flight booth more then anything else and left early. When it was here in Chicago the attendance was good and moving it to Memphis helped kill that. Coupled with nothing there but golden demon and places to spend MORE money itbecame an oobsolete event in my hobby. Almost no one I know here went to games day save for the one person who has ungodly amounts of money. Gw should kill the event if they are going to keep rolling out events of that piss poor quality. Doesn't help that I have adepticon 20 min from my house so I may be jaded

Well I actually went to games day last year here and entered the Golden Demon. I actually thought it was the best Games day i have been to!
1st there were far less hordes of screaming kids.
2nd I never went to Games day to play Games, I went to see people & learn more about the hobby.
3rd the Forge World semina was awesome! Tony Cotrill had me in tears at points he was so funny.
4th Forge World stand was awesome with some very cool models on display including pre release stuff.
5th Forge world event only models (Games Day model was terrible but I'm not into fantasy)
6th Great studio & Eavy metal presence, got to chat some great members of the team.
7th Met up with some old friends & leave the arena for lunch in a pub which beat the captive audience prices usually charged at the NEC.
8th Guest stands like FF were good too and added something a little more diverse.

They really could have had the demon upstairs as the lighting downstairs was terrible. They could have lost retail really unless they wanted to sell pre release stuff or offer a discount but I do save up some money for games day so others might still want to buy stuff but I mainly buy online now for anything from the shop. Free pick up instead of 12% delivery from Forge World is worth it's weight in gold and now they have listened and allowed you to pay in advance for an order and pick it up away from the on the day sales it works very smoothly!

All in all I am one of the few who thought as an adult it was a better day.

Discuss.....

Not surprised at all if it is true. They don't have any staff any more to make the big display games and events within the show, and without those things it's just a store that you have to pay to enter.

At this point I would recommend any of the myriad of other excellent wargaming shows within the UK, most of which feature GW/Forgeworld in some form or another if that is your poison.
Bovington Wargames show is coming up in July - great show, and the added bonus of being based in a quite excellent tank museum.

Type 'wargames shows' into Google - there are at least half a dozen a year that are worth travelling to by all accounts.

If true, this makes me sad. Last year's was a poor excuse compared to 2012's which was almost as if it was a completely different event in terms of scale of fun. the 2013 UK GD was utterly dull, I left after a few hours, after it became apparent I'd paid £35 to get access to a big shop. I wish they'd move it back to the NEC and make it a big event like it was only a couple of years ago! What happened?

Pretty much this. Also, I am beginning to wonder just how much more GW can cut. It's not like there is much fat left in the budget at this point - they are already down to one man stores in most locations, European HQ's and staff cut, EU Games Days gone, now UK follows suit. Where will the axe fall next?

This is very sad, I only went to one Games Day, 2011. I found it fantastic and wanted to return ever since. But given the reports of last years I may have been rather disappointed.

Another thing to add to the list they have cut from, the Invasion days at Warhammer World have also been cut. They were basically a days trip for GW stores to go head-to-head in a tournament. Another thing I enjoyed that has been removed from my hobby...

It's sad.

I remember when it was at the current location before it went to the NEC, Going from that when you had to give a waaagh to be let through the door to basically what was a large shop with an entrance fee last year the way the company has evolved has not always been for the better.

Sad to see games day go, but I think in reality it went a couple of years ago

If they want to cut cost and still have a relevant presence they might want to bite the bullet and have a chat with the nice people who run salute. As it was they only had forgeworld this year with a very minimal stand (literally cardboard boxes of stock to sell and no displays) and most of the independent stockists had little to no GW products for sale.

That would force GW to admit that 'the hobby' is only a smaller part of a much larger whole. I could see GW having a stand at Salute but I certainly can't see it being advertised in White Dwarf. The Forge World stand seemed pretty busy this year so a GW stand may well be quite profitable.

£35 for Games Day or £11 for Salute, I know which one I would go to.

It would definitely take a change of attitude of GWs part but if they did it right, studio stands/participation games/retail, then they could highlight themselves as the big fish in the market. This would need professional stands with good audio visual presentation. To be fair the studio/forgeworld guys are already very good at talking to the public and are an asset that should be used.

The forgeworld stand was plain crap this year, they didn't even have any cabinets with miniatures in. GW need to put their big boy pants on and plunge back into the hobby in an inclusive and accessible way. But they need to do it the right way.

Is there anyone left at GW capable of that? I don't think so tbh.

That's not the full story either. The first 1000 (?) entrants to Salute get an exclusive mini free (plastic historical), whereas as Games Day it was an extra £20 in Finecast.

There's a themed miniature every year in the goody bag at Salute. This years one was my favourite of all the ones I have though.

l walked past it a couple of times before I noticed who it was. It was pretty big but for its size it was suprisingly nondescript. I wasn't there for GW stuff though.
