yeah,
I've been checking the differences in the 2009 box compared to the 2014.
The Rules exactly the same, with clarifications on line of sight.

Tiles..
The 2014 ones have a much more colour saturation and some of the greys in the tiles have a bit of a red tint.
In 2009 the colours are more muted and the greys are a darker grey.

2014 on top
2009 below.

2014 on top
2009 below

Not a big difference.
Which is great I want to mix the sets, Mega sPulk!

OK
What's new?
Basically 19 bits of extra card.
10 extra tiles.
2 torps and ramps
4 breach counters and a 'turn' counter.

1x big room (new)
1x elevator (new)
2x elevator entrys (new)
2x corridor end pieces. (new)
2x 1 square corridor. (new)
2x 2 squares corridor (old ...)
2x torpedos (new)
2x torpedo ramps (new)

The extra corridor sections are just extras... They don't do anything special in missions.

So what do they do?
Torpedos. only used in mission 1.
The space marine rolls a dice (on a 6 can choose) and the torpedo joins the map on the correspondingly numbered tile.
Sexy.

The big room, only used in mission 12, exposes all tiles not closed off by a door to the vacuum of space!!!
Lovely.

Elevator. only used in mission 8
you move the six square tile from one 'level' to the next.

Very cool.

Breach counters - only used in mission 13.

Dirty!

A different sand timer...
2014 is the one on the right. The other two are from 2009 sets.
I timed all three of my Space hulk sand timers.. I think they should be 3 mins.
2009 a - 2min 52sec
2009 b - 3min 01 sec
2014 . . - 2min 57sec

I use and recommend that people use 'SpaceClock'
An adjustable countdown timer. Set to 3 minutes as standard.
A beep marks each minute.
Plus a 30 seconds remaining beep followed by a beeps for each of last 10 seconds!
Final countdown!! Hurry!

Free.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/space-clock/id343187323?mt=8
You can add/remove time, useful if you want to give new players 5 minutes??
Or if you want to use the old rules of losing a minute if the squad leader dies. 2 minute turns!!

A turn counter token - some missions says run 12 turns etc but doesn't' tell you how/where to use the counter...
My guess is on the PSI track works best.

Slightly darker coloured dice. Old dice (two sets!) <<-->> New dice
Malibu Stacy's new hat indeed!
(sorry for the confusing photo, I have ten of the 2009 dice... you get five dice in both editions )

Missions.
Some tweaks on which marines are used in some missions.
New Missions marked in green
Spoiler:

Beachhead (1)
Terminators deploy using boarding torpedoes, the Genestealers start the mission in a dormant state (3 APs).

Suicide Mission (2)
El classico - Flame the Launch control room

Exterminate (3)
Block the genestealer entry points / kill them all!

Rescue (4)
retrieve the C.A.T.

Cleanse & Burn (5)
Flame both techmarine rooms.

Decoy (6)
As many Marines as possible Exit the Map

Alarm Call (7)
Wakey wakey sleepy marines.

Into the Depths (8)
This mission uses the turbo-lift..
The game ends when all living marines are on the second floor...
Both floors have stealer entry points.

score 1 point per marine 3 points for the Librarian on the second floor .
0-3 genestealers win
4-5 draw
6+ SpeshMArines win!

The Artefact (9)
The holy grail.

Escape Route (10)
Run the gauntlet, quickly, GStealers numbers escalate as turn numbers increase..

Regroup (11)
Marines wait for everyone to arrive... then try to exit map.

Hard Vacuum (12)
This mission uses the damaged control room tile and the hard vacuum rule (negative modifier to GS attacks).

No Escape (13)
This mission uses breach counters, there are no regular Genestealer entry points on the map.
Genestealer places the breach entry points pretty much anywhere on the map.
2 breaches are placed at the start of the game.
1 extra breach on turn 4
1 final breach on turn 8

Each Breaches spews forth 1 GeneStealer blips per turn until turn 12.

Breaches can be blocked only by standing on them.

At least 4 marines have to survive until turn 15

Defend (14)
Genestealers want to tear down a wall to breach some ducts... Marines must defend the wall.

Unknown Lifeforms (15)
Retrieve tissue samples from sleeping broodlords ... eek!

Pitfall (16)
Escape the hulk - jump down the garbage chute!

Bottom line: if compared with similar products--miniature/boardgame hybrids with detailed gaming pieces and replayability--is the pricepoint reasonable for what you're getting? Is there anything else on the boardgame market that's comparable?

I'm considering purchasing it, but I know very little about the boardgame market, and I'm not willing to pay a premium because OMGmustowncozGeeDubzlulz! I just want to know if the value's there.

Difficult for me to answer fairly as I'm a hulk a manic and this is my fifth copy...
I paid £60.
It's got 35 tabletop quality miniatures in GW's citadel minis standard hard plastic.
Not the bendy stuff you get in other games and the many many Kickstarters that are flying about these days
I don't know of any other board game that has that!? and they are universally accepted as gorgeous!
and a metric crap ton of tiles! I think it's great value.

For balance
The other products that I'm as excited about playing are
  • Incursion
  • - Kickstarted but grindhouse are having so much trouble it might not appear as retail :( ?
Bendy plastic pieces - but feth tons of them.
    All minis available in metal.

  • Aliens vs Predator
  • - Kickstarted but WILL appear as retail ?
Resin pieces for now and early retail releases, rumours of being made into plastic later.

  • Starwars
  • - Imperial Assault by Fantasy Flight Games
bendy plastics, based on their descent system so very promising (people rave about decent)
released later this year. People expect it will be amazingly supported and have numerous expansion packs... maybe too many.
    For me another must buy...

so many companies making stuff I want! It' a great time to be an adult gamer with some disposable income!

I was staggered by how good the set was... don't own the old one.

Been cleaning up the Terminators and drilling out gun barrels; mold lines are minimal, altho a couple of sprue attachments need lots of cleanup. They're terrific models. Looking forward to taking the whole thing to the FLGS, without carting some megahuge army and committing to a three hour game...

There is a £50 miniature less 2014 box!!

I've seen the 2014 mission book for £6.
No sign of the new tiles yet which are kinda needed for the new missions.
But you could play the new missions with stand in tiles for the unique tiles in a pinch.

It won't be long until someone photo copies and PDFs the new tiles and 4 missions.

    Thanks for the detailed summary!

On the timers, did you check that they were consistently inaccurate (always got the mentioned times), or could it be that they're just inconsistent (a given one might vary by 10 seconds)?
