Warning: big block of exposition incoming.

So I recently acquired a huge amount (multiple crates) of old model airplanes that were sitting in my grandparent's garage. As an Ork player on a budget, I try my best to kitbash and convert my models over buying, so I decided to make some WAAAAAGH!planes out of them. A lot of them are in bad condition, but I've talked to my dad (he made them in his childhood) and we're going to refurbish some of them as Bommers. The thing is, there are a LOT of planes, more than enough for an Ork air force, and many of them are either scaled wrong or beyond repair. I want to do something with the ones that can't be made into planes, but all I've thought of so far is pulling missiles off as rokkits and repurposing pontoons as stormboy packs. Any more ideas for what to do beyond cutting them up for spare plastic? The models are mostly WWII era, with a lot of size variance.

tl;dr I have a bunch of model airplanes that I'd like to find some creative uses for as Ork units, advice and ideas would be great.

An aircraft graveyard table would be awesome. I would at least convert some of the more beat up ones into scatter terrain.

Damn, you're a lucky chap!

Do you know what Size-Range & Scale these are?

Got any pictures? maybe something next to an ork so we have an idea of scale? Depending on the size you could make them grott planes or if they are really small - make them the ork equivalent of a remote control drone. I could just imagine basing an ork at the bottom with a little 1 button remote control to fly them around

For me personally, on scratchbuilds / conversions like these I would try to avoid gobbing on random ork bits. Layering panels and connective tubes / hoses can go a long way for a cohesive look and adds to the idea of functionality.

if they're too small for dakkajets/etc, maybe they'd work as counts-as deffkoptas?

Pulsa rokkits. Lots and lots of pulsa rokkits

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

This, and/or an orky aircraft repair site (possibly captured) - full of broken planes and pieces of planes, some stacked in piles or deliberately welded/bolted together, creating barricades, walls, buildings and other cover terrain. That would be a great way to use up all the leftover bits after you've used the 'good' bits to create orky planes.

Some great ideas so far, I'll see if I can get some pictures uploaded.

I attached some pics of the planes to help with brainstorming. There are a few more of the smaller (3rd, 5th, and 7th are examples) planes than larger. in the last ones I put a GW Bommer in for scale (the red one).

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Ork buggies using wings as sails (windsurfer buggies), use engines etc for storm boys, use the flat parts to build a gargant, etc.

A plane graveyard table would look cook though.

I think a few orks would be crazy enough to make this kind of thing:

Seriously, an Inspector Gadget kind of helicopter helmet would be both funny and cool!

40K is roughly 1:48 scale, larger than most airplane kits' scale, so most of your planes look too small (as is) for orks, but could look fine for grots. With enough conversion work, especially for cockpits where the pilot scale is more obvious, you can disguise the original scale. Don't be afraid to bulk up the planes (especially the fuselages) with plasticard and rivets to better match the classic orky look - it's also a great way to hide holes, gaps and joins.

Gordon Shumway Definitely going to build some terrain with some of them.

Clang what could Grot planes count as in-game?

Tim 121RVC I'm going to try to make some stormboys based on that. I think the Meks running my army are on crack or something. (Side note: I may need an explanation for why my vehicles are all made of human aircraft from the dark age of technology unless I mix things up a bit with my other vehicles. I'll figure something out.)

SilverMK2 Windsurfer buggies sound cool, I thing GorkaMorka grots had something like that. I'll see if I can find some pics. Alternatively I could put sails on a land speeder or something for a deffkopta.

In the olden days, grot planes would have been great counts-as pulsa rokkits, but alas they're no longer in the Codex or even as Forgeworld models with optional rules.

The simplest option would be to make the overall plane dimensions the same as ork planes and have them count-as standard ork planes being naughtily piloted by upstart grots.

Or make little (2 inches wide) planes, and have them count as Lobba ork artillery, piloted by grots too dim to realise they're on a suicide mission
