This is a kind of stream of consciousness blog of whatever is on my painting table related to my Heretek Army. While it may look Dark Mech, my army insists that it has technically fallen to Chaos. It is however a little bit Blanchitsu, and very very heretek.

This army has been bubbling since about August 2015 , but I've been really busy at work (and real life and everything). I hope that putting all my stuff here will get me excited to paint and post. Hopefully my posts will be relatively frequent, at least until my photos catch up with real time.

I apologize before hand for any bad photos. I don't like interrupting my build/paint progress to take pretty photos. I think it's the crazy Ad mech/Madboy Mek in me that just wants to keep going.

This army started when I realized that the Onager legs marry perfectly with the Forgeworld Blood Slaughterer. Anyway, here's some photos, maybe I'll talk your ears off sometime later. :p

So... errr... I liked my design so much I went ahead and did two at the same time (with the requisite modifying of designs... no heretek worth his salt would be caught dead with identical pieces of equipment).

The plan is for this to eventually build into a war convocation, so I will be building minis related to that... although I will have the odd non-related mini in here just because I really wanted to mod or paint something.

kakita,

Interesting combination to create a new look and model.

Thanks, CB

For me I love the converting; I'm trying to make sure as many of my units are as unique as possible, and there's a lot of great inspiration from the forums (and beyond) to draw from.

Plus, I have a LOT of bits and models and kitbashing allows me to clear some of my models.

I should have a picture of the onagers up tomorrow, once I prep the photos.

Ok, before I put up the images, could I check, do you guys like WIPs, or do you just prefer the finished picture? Also, do you guys prefer it wordier (with my yammering my mouth of talking about why I have problems with one thing or another), or do you just want pictures NOW?

Anyway, I was looking through my photos and I realized I didn't have any completed photos of my Onagers so I took them out and did a quick snap. Nothing super fancy (I've seen some with really good lightbox setups and background and stuff), all you've got is my painting table with some distortion (I think it's cos I was trying to take them close up and how large they were).

I've also included in vanguard, or as I like to call them my husks (based on the Mass effect husks). They're really just basic tech zombies from Sedition Wars, but I felt they fit the techno-organic gribbly of my Admech army. I might do a second squad with GW bits some other time, but for now I'm working on other parts of my army first.

Lastly, I have 2 of the triumvirate, the guys that will be leading my army. Whether or not I'll end up with only 3 leaders... I'm not sure yet. But as I said I have other things that I need to paint first. The haemonculus conversion is my Genetor, and he's been mixing Necrodermis and Tyranid Phage cells in his 'Necrophage' experiments.

Sorry that the Genetor is like 99% done, but when I took the photo I realized he had some greens stuff I fixed on then forgot to paint over. He's on my to-do list.

While I love finished photos, the WIP show how a model is created and put together and sometimes when you look at your WIP you come up with a better idea or theme and switch.

Ironically the PLOG I started with the most completed images and almost no WIP has had the most responses on Dakka, but I a hoping that will change as I have switched to WIP on it as I have now shown all the completed models.

Great work there again.

EDC and rustproof: thanks! I'll probably need some c&c for my WIPs. I'm still learning when it comes to conversions and esp the green stuff bits.

CB: hmmm ok. I think I will do more WIP posts then. I have a few more models I have done but not photographed.

Until then though, here's some WIPs.

My hereteks will be invading a necron tomb world to find the secret of the dragon of Mars, and that's what their basing will be like, so I need some necrons stuff. I want to have a few scarabs climbing around, but scarabs are just. So. Hard. To get.

So I tried a little bit of press molding. I did some previously and so I tried to do it with green stuff again, but it didn't turn out so well. Horrible in fact.

Amazingly, I needed to have my wife remind me I had some instamold lying around. Yes, they were molds for something else, but well you gotta do what you gotta do.

Fingers crossed it'll come out better than my first try.

Oh... and one more question. I have a 5mm thick wood board I'm prepping for display (going to be modular 1' x 1' boards). I want it to be slightly more sturdy, as I would like the option of using it for the (very rare) play, but I don't want to make the base too thick as I will also be using it mainly as a display base at home (and I don't want to waste vertical space on a thick board).

Would foamcore layered on the wood be sufficient, or would I need to go with blue/pink insulation foam? Or is there a better option out there?

We have a new Warhammer Shop where we are, and turns out they accept AOPs only if all the minis and stuff are GW only. So I'll be doing a second set of Heretek Vanguard together with my AOP.

Needed a Ctan for my AoP, so I actually bought a Tesseract Vault that I'll be using for (the horror) terrain. You can see me blocking in the idea below. My AoP is in four 1x1 foot squares, rather than one bigger square because my new place is going to be pretty small and I wanted my AoP to pull double duty. My display shelving will be about 1 foot deep, so I can arrange the terrain in a 4 foot long display when it's at home.

You can see where some of the tesseract vault will be (at the top kind of almost an altar) but I'm undecided whether I should use the rest of the vault on the right and bottom squares. The alternative would be your traditional 40k imperial terrain on the bottom square (I have some sprues from the Manufactorum/Imperial city set). It's an Admech army taking over a tomb world so I could see reasons for both. Any opinions?

kakita, too bad about the Warhammer Shops ruling, but that is very common.

One idea is to make some pins to hold the four board sections together and when on your shelf the pins come out or face out.

Not certain on the Imperial buildings, what about the mouths of some large Admech transports? Like massive landing craft, simple to make and the backs could be just black backing that would give the impression of depth and more Admech coming out.

Hope that helps,

CB

Almost one month! Real life has caught up with me. That's not to say I haven't been doing any work though, just that what I've been doing has been involving a lot of waiting (drying and curing time and the like).

Look at the scarabs!

I didn't join AOP 2016 because I knew I needed a huge lead time, and I'm starting my board for AOP 2017. As mentioned, it'll be a necron tomb world that's being taken over by the Ad mech. Unbeknownst to the Ad Mech however, they are being 'helped' by a Ctan that's being held in the tomb world, who is taking this chance to escape the necrons and possess the Ad Mech. So it will mainly be necron terrain, some scarabs and piping (the Admech trying to take over), as well as the central step/altar area.

Anyway I've done some of the preliminary structural work...

You can see how the tesseract vault opens up in the modular terrain.

I added the ridged hose to act as buried piping. You can also see inside I added some textured flooring by getting press molds of the walls. I need to keep that press mold because it might be useful for basing.

The next part is where I need help from the Dakka forum... You'll see I have two possible layouts. The first layout is the AOP board meant to be seen as a diamond. The tesseract vaults are at the side, and the final panel will hold a building/structure of some kind.

The second layout is with the tesseract vault halves put on one side. (The summoning altar is in the square closed to the picture, sorry I didn't put it in). This is so I have the option of presenting it as a diamond, or as a square.

Question 1: Layout 1 looks better, but there's a specific viewpoint for the viewer to look at it from. Layout 2 doesn't look as good (to me), but a viewer could look at it from the corner, or from the side. I'm leaning towards the first layout but could be persuaded towards the second. Which one do you think looks better?

Question 2: In both, the farthest square is relatively empty. I'm thinking of putting some sort if freestanding (it doesn't join with the other squares) terrain that is relatively high, since it's far away. Except I don't know what I should do. Maybe some sort of Ad Mech power drain system? I would have a small imperial building and hook up more pipes to it. Or I could have some ruined Necron building that is has the ad mech pipes attached that is draining the power from it. Is there another option?

CB, I do like the idea of some landing craft, but I'm not sure if it is going to match the rest of the board. It would definitely win on WOW factor though.

This is so cool, nothing better than well-conceived conversions!

I love the Onagers, I actually have two blood slaughterers ready to be converted into Nurgle maulerfiends (I'm giving them the working title 'mud slaughterers') and had planned to use organic tyranid limbs but you've inspired me to look into an Onager variant...

Invicta: Yeah, I guess the first layout is better. I'm going to be working based on that.

Aryllon: Thanks! The onager legs are pretty useful (I didin't use much else though)

I'm now trying to think of a good building/height piece to take up space on the last tile, and damn if the Haemotrope reactor didn't come at a better time...

Now my only problem... how do I get it like NOW?

kakita,

That is a lot of scarabs!

Vote for layout 1.

Could just have some semi-natural terrain in that corner...that some poor Tech Priest has climbed over.

Great stuff.

Layout 1 it is!

I finished one terrain tile; the altar. But I'm undecided if I should rust it up or not.

If I do rust it up it will be along the pipes and at the bottom, as shown in the pictures below.

Any opinions?

Rather than rust, how about dust? You could do that same effect, but on all the flat planes on the structure to make it look like it's not been disturbed in millennia.

Thanks for the comments ynneadwraith. There's gonna be people on the altar so it's not exactly undisturbed for millenia, but I could definitely dust it up a bit more.

Tbh I'm thinking of concentrating on the pipes as a sort of cheat... I wanted to try out some Osl but it didn't work so I'm fixing and covering it up.

I'll grunge up the silvers on the Platform a bit more, but I might save last minute weathering for right till the end when I know how my minis are going to go on so the bases will match better.

kakita,

I agree with Ynneadwraith, dust over rust on the Necron terrain, where there are Ad-Mech additions or equipment then rust.

My two cents,

Thanks JeffyP and Stonned!

Well, following the advice of the forumites, I dirtied and dusted up the Necron Altar somewhat. I'm holding off on the full-blown weathering just so I can finish everything and see what matches well.

I'm holding off on the rest of the terrain for the moment, purely because I feel like assembling and painting something else. Inspired by some of the Dark Mech servitors I've seen in the past, as well as the Hanar in Mass effect, here are the reaperized hanar kataphron servitors (WIP).

I'll be painting the armor white, the flesh a sickly pink and all the glowy bits blue. This should tie all my Heretek Mechs together, while distinguishing them from the black of the necron board.

The platform looks great all dusted up, and I love the reaperised Hanar servitors they look fantastic.

You could also use them as Enslavers too if you wanted to use the old rules for them
