wow, what a splendid idea to use those screwdriver bitz as templates for the gears... ... that is quite holistic thinking mate!!!
and jake... wow...you must have quite good eyesight to work on that tinest of pieces...i tried that too...
with a 2mm "rivet" i guess... or was it a 5mm one...i can´t remember... wasn´t that sold on it...but your tries look rather good!!...
also the tubings on the rifle looks very good it is to me most puzzling how you can achieve such a professional look...the rifle looks really as if GW would have had their fingers in that concept...only you added way more soul to it!
now i am itchy for seing that cool looking pistol being made...

@ Shrike - Thanks!
@ El Vic - Yeah, I can't wait to try out the screwdriver mold idea! First thing I do when I get home tonight! Also, I am using very thin card. Like 0.25mm I think. The tubes on the gun are wire from VCR cables. They cut and bend very clean, so they stay straight. I'll have more pics of the pistol tomorrow. I'm hoping to send out these guns to have Wehrkind make resin copies when I'm done. But I really need to get his centaurs done before I have him do much more stuff....So, pretty soon I hope!
@ Ish - Thanks! I'm actually kind of practicing on the Steampunk look, as I have another commission in the works that will involve a lot more Steampunk looking stuff, so this is a great way to get a feel for the style!
@ Dave - Thanks! If only I could find more time and energy to work on it...And maybe a garage to hold all my hobby related stuff, so I don't have to clean up all the time!

... oh...what will this be?... now i am eager to you spilling the beans on that one^^
on the pic it din´t look that thin...hmmm... i have to try that on thin PC then too...and a fresh blade^^ the current is dull so much you could sit on it^^
and yep... the cleaning up during a session is most vexing... sometimes i have to move to the kitchen or the living room table to avoid the most recent mess i made and work on^^...but i always have to clean up before the kids come back... that is an iron rule to myself... all that dirt and the sharp edges have to be on my desk... for some reason all those weapons of mutilation wnt get touched when on said table...^^

Yes, this! You'll not get very clean lines without it. Also, try the method I showed on the larger gear. Cut notches on opposite sides, then 90 degrees to those, and then in between each of those. It will give you much better spacing. I just guestimated on the smaller one, and it's not the greatest.
And as for the latest commission, the client wants a female "counts as" Coteaz for thier Gray Knights. But with a more Steampunk feel. With a Cyber frog or lizard instead of the eagle. When I get closer to starting on it (a week or so), I'll post my concept sketches.
And if I don't clean up after I get done working, one of our cats will run off with small bits! I still can't find a space marine arm I was sculpting extra armor onto! Darn Cat!

Might be cheaper to get herself a Warmachine model. I have bought a few for use as Inquisitors myself.
It also means I don't have to see that she has an "accident" to avoid conflicts with my centaurs

Ha hahaha!
I don't think Warmachine has exactly what they're looking for. Not Steampunky enough.
Besides, I'm pretty stoked about this one too! Don't worry, Your centaurs (at least the smaller one) will be done before this.

Coteaz ...with a frog/lizard... in a steampunky set...and a female one... this sounds very interesting... i like how you can always come up with something even more surpising!...
by the way... i forgot to mention upon your last big update... those skullhelemts... they look very cool...specially the one with the "pickelhaube"... feel like a heal as not to mention that earlier...how did you manage those pipes on the masks?

GS. What else? I feel more comfortable with that than anything else really. One thing I have been meaning to try to sculpt though is chains. Scares the bejeezus out of me! I don't know why!
And thanks on the helmets. I think I will use those when I make my own small unit of Steampunk IG.
And since there seems to be intrest, I'll go ahead an post my Coteaz concept. Just so you can see what's in my head.
The torso and arms are draw separately so the details can be shown better.

Ok, I changed my mind. Make that so I can cast the gak out of it Fantastic concept art!
Only downside is that Coat-ease wears full power armor, but then no one seems to care much about that sort of thing in 40k so it should work fine.
Assuming you are going to cast it, you are going to want to have the arms different pieces (unless the power fist is on the same plane as the legs and body) and the hand with the weapon should be a different part too, much like the original model. It should work out nicely with the super tough resin I just picked up. Can't wait to try that stuff out!

well...i really like that sketch... is that yours too? wow^^
that sweet spot =I= is simply priceless... the inquisition sure have a ton of style while torturing one into oblivion^^...
many, many details that i instantly fell in love with... those boots are by far the bst part... also the gloves... very cool...and i bet they could be used on other models as well... if you get a commision like that...are you still owner of rights after selling the mini?...because these could if you are able to sculpt all that pies and such things be a huge thing!
if you value my thoughts... i think you are trying to give her a hammer so it seams... or any other close combat weapon...i think you should try to give her one of your steampunky guns... that pistol for instance you are working on... that would be right up at least my alley...^^...and i am sadly not that sure atm of her hairdo...but that might be just because i am not sure of what exactly it should look like...
will she be having a backpack...powerarmor an all? ...that too could seel the steampunky look even more...i have eyed the new GK backpaks and they are a nice choce for steampunk backpacks if converted slightly... @ El Vic - I will definately take drool as a compliment! And yes, my scketch. Thanks!
I'll address a few of your points:
"Sweet spot" =][= He doesn't want too many Inq. symbols, so I thought I would make the one count! (had to make extra sure I spelled that right!)
Each boot, actually each piece of armor will have a distinct look. The story is the armor is piecemeal, as she will scavange armor from whatever she can find after a devastating Choas attack...or something like that.
I will be retaining the copyrights. I give potential clients a choice to buy the copyrights...but none have yet chosen that path. I'm sure I will get someone down the road who is looking to make pieces for a game system they are creating, and don't want too many hands in the pot, so they will buy the rights from me. In case you are wondering, if that happens, I will not even keep a copy of the model, they get the whole kit and kaboodle. If I want a copy, I will have to buy it from them.
And yes, I will try to make the powerfists so that they can be used with other models.
Of course I value your thoughts!
She will be equipped with a hammer. And one of the pistols in a holster would be great!
Her hairdo...yes, well. The client wants her to have a fancy hairdo, like she was at a fancy ball or regalia or something when Chaos attacked....I'm not very good with fancy hairdos....I'll research it more. I'm sure the final sculpt will look different.
I'm thinking of some kind of cylindrical boiler thing for her back. With hoses and wires coming out going to the arms and legs and such. Maybe with a smoke stack on the side? And a furnace of some sort underneath!
And last but not least....I want to put the breast in "Breast Plate"!
And all women should have a set of metal boob armor!

totaly i am with you on the boob armor issue^^...or better the issuing of said...^^
and lol... with delicate things like these spelling is very important...ROFL...
for the hiardo...well there are some female inquisitors out there already from GW...maybe you could look into their hairdo´s... i think this is what you are aiming for...might be just the the angle of the pic doesn´t portry it in a good point of view...
so the hammer indeed... but this too offers a whole range of nice design possibilities... hammers and steampunk are buddies^^
and the powerpack ideas all sound very promising!!!
I will be retaining the copyrights. I give potential clients a choice to buy the copyrights...but none have yet chosen that path. i assumed as much... tho i expect it will be hard to part with a whole concept of a mini...but then...doing art for commision...that is something you have to cope with...goes with the trade...(no pun intended)

Hehe considering I am your caster, getting copyrights seems a little premature I suppose I might in the future if I need to actually make a living selling them (wouldn't that be interesting?) but really I think most models are not at a price point where it is worth recasting unless you need like 30 of them, or they are more than 10$ for a man sized model.

I'd put up a picture, but I've only got the one- progress is slow. I really don't know how you do it, working at that small scale- at least not in additive sculpting. I'm more of a carver, myself, and I've started attempting it with blocks of hardened clay- so far, that's going a lot better than my silly attempts at emulating you.

I honestly don't know how I do it either. Every time something comes out the way I want it, I am surprised! More often than not, it comes out good, but not what I had planned, so I just go with it.
I kind of come off sounding like a prat there, but I don't have formal sculpting training, and the last thing I sculpted before last Summer was an ashtray in High School! So, it's a mystery to me, I'm not going to ask for ti to go away though!
Anyway, I tried to press mold two of my smaller star bit screwdriver heads like Wehrkind suggested yesterday. The smallest of them, by the way is about the same size as the smallest one I cut from Plastic Card. It didn't work out too well, I think I must have squeazed the mold before it hardened. I'll try again though, it makes a pretty good looking gear.
Also, to finish up my steampunk laser pistol semi-tutorial:
Let's see, where did I leave off? Oh yes, I was about to carve the trigger area! First I drill two small holes with my two smallest pin vise drills.
And then with a very sharp blade...I can't stress this enough! The ones I did for the Rifle and Sniper Rifle, the blade was a bit on the dull side, and it worked, but I put in a new blade for this, and it is so much easier!
You GENTLY carve out the area you want for the trigger and trigger guard. This will most likely be to your personal taste, but just look at some triggers to get an idea of what you want.
Then when the shape is about right, I carve off a thin piece of the trigger itself, so it looks indented from the rest of the area. (it's kind of hard to see it here.)
Next, Sand! And sand and sand.... I used 600 grit sand paper. Then glue on the barrel. I skipped the part where I fashioned the end piece, but that is also going to be up to your taste, so whatever look you are going for.
Here is a size comparision. It's a bit long, but not too bad:
Then I just started adding the bits and gubbins to make it look steampunk-y!
If you are going to add "pipes" and such, I recommend sculpting a bit of GS to the ends to make it look like they are going into connectors or something.
And here is where I am at now with the pistol, along side the rifles.
Still some stuff to add, and I want to add some bands around the sniper rifle like I have for the other two, and I want to add an "End Cap" to the butt of the pistol grip.
I hope this helps if you are planning to make something like this yourself.
My one big question though, because I do want to try to sell these, is: Do they look too " GW"? I mean, will they have a problem with these do you think?
Anyway, thanks for looking, C&C as always, appreciated!
