I've seen a lot of good stuff from you over the last years, but this one is going to beat them all. Congratulations. Can't wait to see him finished.

Cheers for the kind words, everyone!

The grey weather outside makes taking decent photographs almost impossible today, but I still want to share my progress on the first couple of armour plates with you, so we'll have to make do with pretty shoddy pictures for now, for which I apologise!

I have added a couple of extra steps to my regular (three-step) bronze recipe, in order to add some more tonal variety to the finished armour, and so far it seems to be working rather well, wouldn't you agree?

Nah, he won't need a dreadnought. He'll just say,
"Come back here and take what's comin' to ya. I'll bite yer legs off!"

@ evildrcheese: Whoa, that is a pretty big compliment right there, mate! Come to think of it, with all of the people I seem to have turned to the worship of Khorne, I sure hope there's something good waiting for me in the afterlife...

So the weather is just as bad again today, but the photos have managed to improve a bit: Here's Angron with most of the armour plates in place:

The colour of the armour was chosen because I wanted it to resemble the general look of the armour worn by Forgeworld's Angron. Plus it also works rather well with the red skin, if you ask me.

As always, let me know what you think!

Cheers, guys!

@ Boss Salvage: Haha, yeah, half a dozen times or so

The standard recipe goes like this:

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with Army Painter Strong Tone
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze

Now for Angron's armour, the recipe was supplemented with a few additional steps and became:

- basecoat with Vallejo Tinny Tin
- wash with a mix of Army Painter Strong Tone and Vallejo Smokey Ink (to create even deeper shadows)
- drybrush with GW Dwarf Bronze
- drybrush with a 2:1 mix of GW Dwarf Bronze and GW Mithril Silver
- drybrush very lightly with GW Mithril Silver

So here's another round of updates: All of the armour plates and trophies on the belt are now in place. There's also something that I need your help with, but we'll be getting to that in a minute. First, pictures:

So here's the thing I would love to hear your feedback on: I am not perfectly sure about those kneepads. They always seemed like a no-brainer during the conversion process, adding some additional bulk to the model and further differentiating it from the stock Bloodthirster, but now it seems to me like they actually make the model look slightly too clunky:

So what do you think -- should I keep them or lose them (they are just tacked in place for now)?

As always, your input is much appreciated!

In the meantime, I have finally managed to paint that unfortunate Ultramarine:

Aw, man, look at him, all clean and pristine -- alas, it was not to last...

And here's a closer look at the finished Astartes:

I also tried my best to take pictures of the gory parts:

I think part of what is making them 'clunky' is that there's nothing on the model indicating how they're attached. That's an issue that gets run into a lot with these models- there's no connectivity bits, and so things look, well, tacked on or slapped in place. If you were to have some scarred flesh between them and the legs, or straps going around behind the knees, or bolts showing them attached otherwise, they'd not look as clunky. But, of course, that would mean doing a little sanding and modelling , which would screw up the paint job on the knees.

I doubt you'll do that, which is a bit of a pity, since I think, like you said, that the knee armour does add a lot of extra distinction, and does a lot to make him more grand and have more presence here.

Looking awesome man. I actually feel like the knee plates would work better as part of the shoulder guards, covering the 'armpit' space between the pauldron and the breastplate. Not sure if his face would get in the way though.

If you feel okay with adding straps or something to indicate them being held in place, I think they'd look great. But now that you mention them as is, I can't stop noticing how dorky they seem to be just having to appearance of being just there. Pity too because the knee pads themselves are quite nice.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

I think they look cool, but have to agree about the lack of straps. While “because demon” is a valid excuse for why they are stuck there, the fact that the thigh plates look to have straps undermine that.

I do like their inclusion though. He’s not just a demon made from warp stuff. He is an ascended from a primearch, to whom armor was a part of his identity.

You could go either way and make it work.

I was going to comment on the lack of a highlight color, but the Ultramarine does a very good job there. Helps offset the otherwise two tone model. The axe might also do that once it gets done.

I disagree with many here. The Armor itself could be fused to the body. Something that has been done many times in the Warhammer universe. Though I get their points about it not looking attached.

Personally I feel they look wrong on the knee when they'd look far better further down on the shin just below the knee.

Thanks for the well-considered feedback, everyone! I agree that some straps would have made the kneepads seem more plausible, but seeing how they always seemed like an optional part of the model for me, to be added or left regarding whichever looked better, creating straps and then maybe not having anything to add to them would have been a bit of a gamble -- and then I'm just a lazy bum like that.

I am not really sure the presence of straps would change anything about the clunkiness, however, because it wouldn't really change anything about the shape. And just because something's plausible doesn't mean it cannot kill the flow of a model

But to be honest, I am slowly growing used to the kneepads as is -- haven't entirely made my mind up yet, though, so I guess they'll stay tacked in place like that.

I will say that I like the way there's a bit of Angron's bare skin showing between his pauldrons and breastplate, though: I think that's something that's really important for the contrast and colour balance on the model, so that area will definitely stay that way.

So anyway, with the Ultramarine out of the way, there was really no excuse to put off painting the axe any longer, so that's what I did today. Which means that, apart from some highlights and minor cleanup work, the model itself is just about finished now:

As for the axe itself, the strangely organic shape of the blade would have made painting it in simple metals seem like a bit of a cheap cop-out, so I went for something partially organic and disturbing, trying to duplicate the look of ElDiablo's/Midian's excellent Bloodthirster axe:

As you can see, I also added some blood to the axe, mostly because it made sense, what with Angron clearly just having cut apart an Astartes... I believe that'll be it for blood effects on the model, though. There might be some more blood on the base...

So yeah, I do have to say that I am actually really, really happy with this guy -- in case you hadn't noticed

So while you guys are probably tired of seeing the model, I would of course love to hear your feedback! As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks a lot, guys! I really appreciate it!

@ LeCacty: No problem, mate! Here's my reasoning behind the axe:

It's true that, canonically, Daemon Angron wields the Black Sword, a weapon forged for him during the Heresy by Vel Kheredar. It's the weapon that appears on his ancient Epic model, and it also appear in the recent fluff.

BUT the one illustration of Daemon Primarch Angron (by Alex Boyd) shows him with what looks like a daemonic version of the axe Angron has in most of the old Heresy artwork by Wayne England (and also in the first illustration of Angron by John Blanche), with the characteristic eagle wing behind the blade. And because I love the old JB/ Wayne England art and also wanted to base my conversion on the aforementioned Alex Boyd piece, an axe it was. Well, that and that fact that I just couldn't think of a decent way to come up with a suitably awesome and unique sword -- Biohazard is currently doing really well on that account, though.

Oh, and the Black Blade actually gets shattered in "The Emperor's Gift", so all bets are off anyway

You know what would be awesome for a Khornate sword, sometime? A completely plain blade. The most basic of basic cruciform swords. But a solid, otherworldly red. (so paint it in a completely different style to the rest of the model)

Because Khorne is the god of battle and war as well as slaughter and blood and skulls, and if you're showing the purest essence of war and combat wouldn't be something covered in fangs and eyeballs, but rather an incredibly archetypical sword that conveys, well, the 'essence' of 'sword'.
