On the spelling, it's debatable as Tolkien wanted Dwarfen and Elfin, but it was changed in the editing process iirc.

New fantasy release and we're lumped with the gakky 1 click nonsense. I mean looking at this, http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440004a&prodId=prod2380275a

It's no wonder peeps aren't so keen to start Fantasy anymore :(

Compare that rubbish to this: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/dwarfs/product/thorgersons-storm-of-steel-135-figures.html

Nearly $50 cheaper and you get over 3x the models (I counted 41 models in the Dwarf one-click bundle), plus you get what you can actually field out of the box as an actual army not a handful of units and a character and nothing else, thus still needing to spend another couple of hundred on additional units.

Even this: http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/kings-of-war/dwarfs/product/dwarf-army-set-85-figures.html is a better deal than the GW nonsense, for a fraction of the cost.

GW is, as they say, taking the mickey here.

You make an interesting comparison but I would rather have the GW Dwarves.

Now if Avatars of War did a bundle deal that would be a closer call...

I am beginning to tire of the weekly bits of releases though. It will inevitably mean the Army book will be in the fourth week of releases to not spill the beans on the whole release (or longer if the release cycle is longer than a month?).

I really don't understand why AoW are not doing something like

BUY 10 BOXES of our awesome Dwarf(vesfxe)s and get an additional 10-25% off!

They could even make Army boxes with a 10-30 men strong unit of all their releases + couple of heroes.

AOW are clearly selling at their production capacity, so further discounts are unnecessary

They might be able to boost production,

but depending on where the logjams are doing so might require more investment & ongoing capital to do so than is wise (especially after the warcast hiccup)

So, I don't know if this has been discussed already, but a LGS near me was accidentally selling next week's White Dwarf early. The Dwarfs have a Gyrobomber coming, this kit also makes a new Gyrocopter. They are also getting a new Runelord, and Engineer Character, and the next White Dwarf has a picture of the new Dwarf Army Book. Also, if you look closely, you can see new Dwarf Ironbreakers. This new Ironbreakers kit also looks like it builds some kind of blunderbuss wielding shooting unit. This blunderbuss carrying unit might also have the option to build some kind of flamethrower gun, I'm not sure.

In review:

New Gyrobomber/Gyrocopter kit.
Engineer Character.
New Runelord.

Grainy pictures in next White Dwarf of new Ironbreakers, and it seems this kit also builds new ranged unit with large gun or blunderbuss option and possible flamethrower option.

Just looked at the pre-orders page. 40 euro for 10 hammerers, 17 euro for a slayer or a character. Plastic, admittedly, but, holy crap. Is sticker shock worse when you were actually considering buying them or something? That is completely mental.

Hopefully the Engineer, and Runelord coming next round are true. Mostly, because I'm excited to see what GW has come up with, but also because I called it.

I know everyone is big on AOW, but for characters, check out the link below. These guys are making some awesome looking models!

Yeah I was thinking that earlier while flicking through the new slim WD. It's been a few years since I last played WHFB but you need a block of 20 of these guys and the Longbeards, right? So that's £60 per unit. That's a hefty chunk of change for a small bit of an army.

Yeah, I like Mantic prices but for the most part don't like their aesthetic in most of their armies. Given the amount of time it takes me to get an army together, I stick to models of which I actually like the aesthetic rather than what's cheapest. That said... $70AUD for 10 plastic models is beyond my tolerance level. The Mirkwood Elves are $70 for 10 as well, I love the models but I haven't bought a single one because of the price.

It's one of those cases where at $70 for 10, I've bought 0 for $0. If they'd been $40 for 10, I would have bought 30 of them for $120, lol.

If this rumor is right, it looks like GW is moving the book release until after all the kits have been released, putting it at the end of the month. I can't believe this is a smart move unless some issue caused the ook to be delayed in printing. Are that many people going to buy new figs without seeing how the units work ahead of time?

I'm a huge fan of Red Box Games Dwarf range, they're awesome miniatures with piles of character.

HOWEVER, be aware that all the figures shown are on 20mm rounds, not 25- they're about the size of LOTR Dwarves- as tall as GW ones, but with much finer (more realistic) proportions. The heads, hands and weapons scale poorly with GWs battlegnomes. So I wouldn't recommend them to someone looking to add to an existing GW force.

I have a GW force and I still collect then though.

Yeah - although if they don't put in the full rules (like the new Dwarf character having a suit of armour mentioned in the text but then no stats) it kinda defeats the object !

And more details I found in a post by Bugman on TWF, which he credits to:

ARMY RULES
It's basically 3 rules:
-Ancestral grudge, roll a D6 before the first turn. On 1-2 your general hates the enemy's general. On 3-4 your characters hate all enemy characters. On 5-6 your army hates the entire enemy army.
-Resolute, charging units have +1 strength
-Relentless, cannot be marchblocked.
(NOTICE: no -1 to flee and pursue rolls? I figured this would go with how movement and charging changed and all.)

The trends of +1 attack for hammerers, +1 strength on the charge, and no reduction to flee/pursue all seem to point to a design looking to create a greater incentive to engage in combat. Historically the latter is pretty big, as it was more difficult to actually get any points if you engaged, since units would often just flee away, preserving their points. If the war machines are priced intelligently, and if there's some (non-warmachine) way to deal with monsters that doesn't involve losing entire units at a time, it could mean there's some hope for multiple alternatives for competitive dwarf play...

To each their own. They look fine to me in the sense of collecting an army to play a game; certainly not for a display, but for gaming even the much-maligned Men-at-Arms look fine to my eyes, and would look fine as a regiment on the field. But that's me; I paint for gaming and don't care as much about the look of an individual figure as I do about the overall look of the unit from a distance.

For getting an army on the table, Mantic are great. I don't love their dwarfs stylistically, but they are quality casts. A huge advantage to them is that they paint up easily, and the Mantic bases are the easiest to magnetize (magnetic table on the bottom and you're done). The army lacks a variety of elites though.

And I actually kind of hate the GW plastic dwarfs stylistically before this hammerer kit. More detailed and cleaner sculpts than mantic for sure, but I don't know if they're actually better when it's all said and done.

I'm surprised AoW isn't rushing to get their basic warriors released in their plastic, or at least on preorder. No need to discount because they can't handle the capacity, but selling them at full price seems like an obvious thing to scoop up sales from players wanting good looking dwarf armies.

Yeah I was thinking that earlier while flicking through the new slim WD. It's been a few years since I last played WHFB but you need a block of 20 of these guys and the Longbeards, right? So that's £60 per unit. That's a hefty chunk of change for a small bit of an army.

Unless the meta changes considerably in the new book, Dwarves run melee blocks of 30-40; any less and they just die before getting to swing. So increase that cost per unit by 50-100%.
