They look fantastic!
For photograping black minis, it might be an idea to look into blue or grey backdrops for the pics, the white makes the image very high-contrast and the depth of the black is getting a bit lost.

Yeah those past few pictures have been a quickly thrown together backdrop that in hindsight wasnt a good idea. I do have a grey backdrop for my light box and I got to use it some tonight!
So I finished the rest of the assault squad meaning I made and painted a entire 10 man squad in around two weeks! By far my fastest time ever, I have done a lot of new techniques with these guys (most noticeably transfers) and I got to say I am so happy with them. Next up is possibly some more scouts or my librarian when it gets here, and of course the AoP board itself. So as usual comments and criticism are always welcome!

Yeah, those are fantastic! The speed and efficiency with which you painted them combined with the quality of the paintwork means these might just be your best yet (although I'm still very partial to those Death Riders you did a few months back!)

Thanks para that means a lot. But yeah this squad and the death riders are tied, in my mind, as my best models yet!
Speaking of models after much hemming and hawing I finally finished my LSS. After this I will be possibly making another scout squad for the board, and of course after the football game is over I will start putting paint on the AoP board, finally .

That looks awesome too! While I was cheap and built my LSS Scouts as actual Scouts to get double for my money, every time I see a Speeder with its full compliment of hangers-on I do slightly regret that decision!

It has a get in the car loser we are going to kill some heretics feel to it . But one of my buddies actually magnatized the torsos to the legs on the LSS and then took regular scout legs to a base so when they disembarked he could just pop them off of the LS and onto their walking bases.
Alright this has been one of my most productive weekends in a while. I got that assault squad done, finished the LSS. And now I have painted up the entire base for the wetlands AoP board! Plus painted up everyone's favorite mischievous lads nurglings! Where they will hide on the little islands making faces at the approaching spaces marines. I also got a scout squad all built up, minus some mould lining, and should be primed up tomorrow. Anyways tell me what you all think about the board so far!

So the first of my ebay deals has finally rolled in and it is the forgeworld sevrin loth of the red scorpions! I have always liked the model just because of how different it was from the usual librarians that GW has put out and when I saw it on ebay I knew I had to at least try and win it. Lo and behold I did end up winning it and for cheaper than you can buy the librarian clampack at GW. I made a few modifications to him, just slicing off the hand and flipping it palm up so that I could attach some warp fire coming out of his palm. At the moment I do not know if I am happy with the way the flames turned out, so if anyone has a good recipe for green flames let me know! And if you need a better picture of the flames let me know as I took this picture around midnight when I was too tired to get my lightbox out

The flame looks great now it's in context, very natural indeed! And yeah, that guy for less than the GW one is a hell of a deal, it's an awesome model. Did you get the Honour Guard as well, or just Loth?
Do you plan to run him as 'not-Loth' rules-wise, or just as a generic Librarian?

He was just by himself so just loth, and while I would love to have loth, I don't believe I can take him as a raven guard. So for now he will be a lvl 2 librarian who rides shotgun in a drop pod with my devastator centurions.

Alright, small update time. I got the chaos ruins almost finished on the board, I went with a more whiteish grey marble theme for them and then washed it down with a blackish green wash to show how long it had been sitting in the swamp for. I also got the nurglings glued down to the little islands in the back facing the marines as if they are taunting them that they are too late to stop the plague zombie spell. I will be surrounding them with grasses and what not as to hide them a bit to explain why they escaped the wrath of the marines (who undoubtedly had bigger targets in mind). Also I got a devastator squad all built up and they are just waiting on a good mould lining. Not really surprising in any sense GW doesn't include normal bolters and backpacks in the devastator squads so you are SOL if you want to have normal bolter marines in your squad. Luckily I have a decent sized bits box so I was able to grab the right parts to make them. The new scuplts for the marines are pretty sweet, especially the new stuff for the sgt, I can't wait to get paint on these guys!

Looking great, the OSL is of the nice and subtle variety that I appreciate much more than the 'point airbrush. Press Button' variety! If you really want to sell the green as flames, then I think the best thing to do would be adding some very, very white green to the 'deepest' parts of the flame. Take a look at these flame tests for examples: Fun fact: That's the first time my chemistry A-level has actually come in handy... It's a tricky effect to pull off, as you essentially have to highlight 'inside out' as you want the innermost parts to be brightest, but it will work brilliantly when combined with the OSL.

Thanks para! The greenish white is a good idea and I will have to try it out later tonight. Now you have to find someway for the Pythagorean theorem to come in handy in real life and you will have made your teachers dreams come true .
But I didn't get a whole lot done yesterday, just finished up the axe (went with a red force blade) and put down his campaign transfer plus some stuff for the base. All that is left really is waiting on the shoulder pad and to put down the realistic water. So hopefully this guy will be done by friday so I can use him in all of his glory on saturday.

Thanks! Though looking back I might of chosen maybe a purple instead of a green for a flame, but live and learn!
Slow day today, I got the vegetation down on the board and am in the process of mossing everything up. I also got the zombies all done, I am keeping them a simple rotting flesh greenish grey. All that is left really is to do the birds and signs, the rope for the hanging dudes and get sawing on the boarder that will hold in the water. I am contemplating staining the wood so it isnt its natural colo, what do you all think? It may add some extra steps but it could look nice if I chose the right stain color.
Sorry for the possibly bad pictures, I had to move the board inside since it is getting around the low 50s/high 40s at night here now and I didnt want to leave it outside in the garage.

Never Forget Isstvan!

Alright with my biggest hobby project to date coming to a close I thought I would do a state of my hobby address. To lay out what I hope to do and build, especially since winter is coming soon to the chicagoland area. At the moment I have two devastator squads built and primed, one tactical squad primed, one drop pod primed and base coated, one scout squad, one dreadnought, one LSS, and one centurion squad all built and primed
What is left? Well one razorback (waiting on forgeworld rhino doors for that), ten assault marines (waiting on bases), one avenger for my DKoK (waiting on base for that), and drum roll please one fire raptor! (waiting on model and base). I also plan on buying ten of the mor deythan when they come out and convert them to sternguard and will probably get another drop pod for them also. But with november fast approaching I believe I have about 3 weeks of priming weather left before it becomes to cold to rattle can spray it. So my general plan is to get all of the above primed to hold me out for the winter, I plan on maybe adding the rest of the death riders to that list but at the moment my DKoK are on the back burner for my Raven Guard.
Also I got some more work done on my AoP board, I cut the border that will keep the water in and I have also stained it! I plan on gluing it in tonight and then sealing the inside edges with clear caulk to make it water tight. So I am almost there, but the realistic water will still take 1 and a half to two days to complete so time is running out.
Lastly I got a game in this past saturday with my raven guard for an escalation league at my local gw. My teammate was a good friend of mine who took a horde guardsman list, and my opponents were a tau player and an eldar player (who just so happened to win the youngbloods tournament at adepticon). It was a great game, turn one my grav centurions destroyed the riptide but alas they all died at the bottom of turn one to the eldar. Though it tied them up for an entire turn allowing us to win on points. In hindsight I should of targeted the eldar biker squad with farseer which only had 8 bikes in it, it would of gotten rid of his most potent psyker and gotten us the slay the warlord points. But the MVP was tied between the centurions and my thunderhammer captain plus assault squad which wiped shadowsun and all of her body guards in one turn of combat. Anyways here are some pictures from the game.

Lovely work. The water is done thing to be proud of.
I do agree that more is probably better, it is *Armies* on parade after all.

Great stuff! I bet if you were to have a quikc play around in photoshop/equivalent and add some fog effects/maybe a few lens flashes and such, you could do some awesome shots likethe ones in the FW books of those models. The RG advancing through the swapm, not quite sure what or who they're looking for, very atmospheric. I actually quite like the 'dead' space in that regard, it gives a sense of the unknown.
Actually, the whole thing reminds me a lot of a scene in the second Horus Heresy novel where a Sons of Horus detachment are about to have their first encounter with Nurglite demons in a very similar sort of setting.

That looks like a great AOP entry, the three higher placed entries must have been awesome. One thing I have noticed about AOP boards is a lot of people seem to like added height on the boards, it just seems to catch the eye. Given that yours was swamp themed that was not really an element that you could add.
Hope to see some progress on the rest of the Marines soon.

Yeah they were all raise, especially the eldar one which had a giant webway gate and the ad mech which was packed with models. I plan on pumping out some more marines soon especially since it will get too cold to prime soon and that will end (or slow) any priming of new models.

Is there a good way to use them? Or should I follow the fw guides in the masterclass book/online? Also do you gloss weather powder gloss again? or a matte?
