Great start, Vik! (Sorry, I've been so lax about commenting )
My thoughts:
The design is really good, imho: I like the contrast between the symmetry of the gate/towers and the asymmetry of the rock face
The towers are my fav part currently, but that might just be due to the high rivet count I think there are better bits for your access panel/security system/doodad. There are plenty of screens/keypads in vehicle kits (especially SM). I even have a couple if your famous bits box is lacking (I think I owe you some steampunk heads anyways )
The only thing that really bothers me is the paper mache texture. Have you thought about any of the spray texture products out there, or at least gluing some sand strewn about?
hey rawson... i have thought about adding the odd spot of differnently textured rock... sandy and such like... but i had to move on so this idea got canceled on the way... might be that this is costing me points in the end with the judge...
the control panel i am frankly speaking totally fond of... for me it was looking very fitting...hmmm...
ha...and you ain´t seen nuthin´yet^^
BECAUSE...
update time...
he pics sadly don´t do the reality justice enough... in good lighting these looks way better...
what you see is a tinbitz basecoat followed with ice blue wash... over and over again... wich ended like this... some points might look a bit too sloppy...i could mend this by simply turning the cupola to a better looking side around
definatly like the look of that so far vik! wouldnt have thought of the tinbitz->washed with ice blue... and dont worry I think I finaly understand how bad my picture taking is
well i thought how to get the verdigris look done... and then i thought how about doing it as if it actually happened... so i used the tinbitz as a copper color substitute... and it kinda works for me^^
maybe i get some better pics tomorrow out into the sunshine^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and better pic of your avatar... by far!!!
by the way... tomorrow will be a big update!!! pics galore with bright colors!!! be there or be a rectangular thing!!!
Hey vik, iv'e been following this project in silence for a while now.. but i don't see any reason to do that anymore.. and like rawson sais i also think you should do something about the texture of the rocks.. but that's pretty much all i don't like on this, or the thing i like the least. keep it up and i'm looking forward to see it done!
But I think you might be missing a 'Threshold' between the stone and the main face (the square lid thing). Like a big ol' double rivetted strip covering up the seam. I dont' know how willing you'd be to add anything at this stage, though- but I just had to comment on that.
It's absolutely amazing, though. I need to start modelling again.
Also vik, are you going to add some trim on the black border of the entrance or continue having the hill going down and over the black? Thought it might look better with something other than a black rectangle....
hey anvil... good to see you back again... and you raised a very valid point... i will fix that issue.... it was already preying on my mind too!!!
and good ideas dave... and not_u you too have a point there^^...
but i have today show you this yesterdays work of mine...
and might i be so bold as to invite you to not just scroll through the pics but maybe look a bit more indepth to the pics...? i am particular a bit proud about the green energy effect on the death ray...
so here are some nice sunny pics for you:
note...this is still pre wash ... the metal works will soon get a nice wash job... even my wife complained about that^^
cheers, vik

hello avro...
in fact the black rectangle will soon get a treatment that it will look like fortified concrete... so more a grey rectangle really^^... it is to be done today in fact too^^... the to do list of so much^^ deadline is coming to get me^^
the tesla ball and death ray (?) are looking great! now all its missing is a mad scientist standing outside of the door, hands in the air.. and yelling madly into the air (with your face of course)
I like the green coils, if you ever do tyranids do the carapace like that. Purple though could be a little brighter. Unless it's throwing warp energy or something which then it's about right.
the purple ball is still WIP... it needs some more lights i agree... wether i do lightning...or drybrushing for that... yesterday i ruined the lightningbolts... had to redo the painting... seems i am too dumb for that...
and RW... i think i might need me to get me a mad scientist soon^^
Automatically Appended Next Post: and... not_u... yes... if ever nids ...again... then that for sure...^^ (got rid of my nids about almost half a year recently...)
I think the thing to do is wash it first, und after, use a really, reeeeeaally, Sehrlich(?) klein brush to add tiny little pure weisse highlights on the very edges of things. Not too many, but enough.
sehrlich...LOL...made my day... did you mean something along the lines of extremly? i understand... it is the randomness that isn´t really soemthing i can come up with... i tend to create patterns... and repeat them... that is not the style i am after... isn´t it something really dreadful to see that your imagination doesn´t get matched by your skills???... argh....
at max... horse urine...lol...i wont even attempt to second guess your aparent knowledge in that field ... and somehow now that you mention the purple ball on the tesla piece...i think now of blue balls... would be a fitting size by the way
and dave... thanks dave... but be carefull... that death ray offers some tough love in return
i worked some more on some issues... washed the rock... washed and painted the concrete with grey paint... it looks a bit different now... but sadly for the worse... the towers and the door got washed too... and some other minor preparations are currently reaching completion too... if i am bold enough and get it sorted ...then i might be able to present the finsihed peice around the weekend...hopefully... all toes and fingers crossed^^
picupdate is probably tomorrow... no pics at all done today...
naw... the last coupla days was slow progress here... tho that´s not any testament to what i have been up to... you got only a sort of readers digest version of my entry to the competition...
the real thing will be revealed... it will^^ i am on the finishing line as we speak^^
and silver... good to have you here!
i think i will update with some nice washed pics later that night/day...
at skalk... thanks mate! yup i am quite fond of that piece!!
so
update time of mine...
i went out of my comfy zone too...
see those lightning lines?
by the way...both peaks for the towers are now declared finished...washed and everything...
started redecorating the "front lawn"...which looks a bit less than i wanted it to look...darn...
and the cupolas got a treatment of watered down scorpion green to get the tarnish on the copper a bit more into the green range...feels now a tad too green and dark tho...
That is looking fething awesome, sorry for the bad language but it is some sweet work, the tesla coil looks amazing now well done for stepping out of your comfort zone
The Lines have added a real sense of energy to the over all look and cleaned it up remarkably, the metal work looks more realistic and has a real steam punk finish to it
You're painting is coming on leaps and bounds mate and is really adding depth to your cool and crazy creations, the laser looks as if a charge of energy is building and almost ready to be released at some unfortunate.
Overal great stuff and loving the added texture of flock to the base, much needed IMHO so good call.
i take that as a special compliment to my heart! much apreciated...
loving the added texture of flock to the base, much needed IMHO so good call.
thanks... i was very unsure about it si that i only did some one one side in case of looking dumb... should i do more on the left side too? for optic balance?

And a cutting mat maybe some sprue cutters as well
I was wondering where that dude's head went and what the other guy's wearing, then I amused myself by thinking it was the other dude's deflated head, minus the skull
I'm having that time after the sugar rush where you feel all low, but it's not that- just that I seem to find things funnier than they are today...
but about the duvet, I hate that kind of duvet, the really thin ones, to me it's like not having one, but you get tangled in it.
if I could open my door and window, it wouldn't be so bad, but having the door open would mean people moving around would make me wake up too early and opening the window heralds a plague of moths into my room ^^
i can understand that about the thin duvet... our kids were supposed to sleep that way... they can sweat like lil piggies at night, so it was ment to help... didn´t work tho^^ i bet for the same reasons...
and moths... is that really a problem? if it had been gnats i would see the point...
See what you get for being a little adventurous? AWESOME stuff! I'm particullarly impressed by the weathering of the metals, and the energy effects. Well done, sir. Well done!
A duvet is a basically a cover which is stuffed with down or in more modern terms cotton wool, and quilted. the pockets created are excellent at keeping heat in.
You lay under it in cold weather. That's a blanket to me. BUt a quilt is different. It is made of scrap work pieced into pretty patterns. and sewn in a funky way.
I like the poses on the guardsmen but that mushroom head is a little unsettling
mxwllmdr wrote:You lay under it in cold weather. That's a blanket to me. BUt a quilt is different. It is made of scrap work pieced into pretty patterns. and sewn in a funky way.
I rarely call a duvet a quilt for that reason- to me, when I think "quilt" I think that, when I think "duvet" I think the kind of stuffed blanket.
mxwllmdr wrote:I like the poses on the guardsmen but that mushroom head is a little unsettling
kinda reminds me of the rebel troopers in star wars...
lol... didde... a lawn mower... what an hilarious idea... hmmm... lemme think about it... (as if we dont know already that i have swallowed the hook line and sinker already^^)
and mates... whatever it is called i sleep under a down filled blanket covered with a cloth...:
that oneeyed is for you RW
as for the terrain competition... well i worked hard... very hard... did my best... and ... i think tomorrow night i will be able to show you what i done... everything.... the shocking wrecking truth...
also didde... the lawn as you see it has greatly progressed already... but i bear your idea in mind...^^
well if i didn´t get some time by my family i wouldn´t have had enough to get my entry sorted out too... you know... being unemployed mostly was a picknick... free time and such things... now that this time is coming to an end... the last days are so crowded with lots of stuff^^... if such cool competitions but have been happening before^^
er... if you want the other goblin auction ending soon then i skip it...
today i want to present my entry for the first instalation of the then ongoing terrain building competition...the following entry was made acording to the rules as seein here in the OP of this thread:
when i built the mountain side for this the idea just poped up in my mind... so then i went wild with a box of goblins and some grotz i had... i probably join the bandwagon with the goblin revolutionary army...soonish^^
Waht a brilliant idea!
I LOVE the rear-entry - and all the little details.
The huge bag being dragged up, the tangled-up Gretching dangling by the rope,...
N.I.C.E.
thank you klaus! it was awefully fun to work with grots... they really lend well to conversion work... and seeing your recent creations... there is so much one could do with sratchbuilding stuff for them to make a nice army ...
nice job vik, the invasion of the grots! im glad you kept that secret unill now, it definatly adds to the reveal, and i really love the little servoskull-door panel thingy right next to the door. overall great work vik!
Nice terrian mate! the grots are loving. The crew however seems how to say, confuzzeled as to whats going down. As for the rear guard i guess he didnt see it coming.

an iron sky inspired UFO...from steampunk to diesel punk it is only a smallish step anyway...
piece was built from two caps of spagetthi ice my wife brought me from her work... i just love plastic packagings^^...
so here it is...
note that i still need measurments for the flight base size... the long thingy at the underside will be the base for the jetstream/smoke...
next riveting and i need to figure out a way to arm that fella...
Great job on the comp piece amazing job and the surprise was way better than I thought it would be Love the grot dragging the bag of gubbinz up the steps epic
The new piece is fantastic love the early look, have you got a mini to give a scale shot I want one of these now it looks really cool
thakns LDD... it was totally fun inspired to do all those grots...
and as for the UFO... will do so asap a scale shot... it is at least deffkopta size... but this build has me inspired to do my german based chaos army... stay tuned for the evil empire!

would've been cooler if it had a tractor beam style thing coming out the bottom, which holds it up, but that would've been pretty difficult to pull off ^^
i only have the parts for one further with me for now... sadly...
at first i thought about adding grotz to it too... but then again i have zillions of warzone bauhaus minis, wiating paitiently to get some work on them...
and yes shrike... something like that would be nice... there will be bitz attached to the frame but i am not really sure what atm... will shape up soon...

you take vanilla icecream and push it through these:
you thus get those noodle like structures of icecream... then strawberry sauce all over it and some white chocolate flakes on top... done...
i know it looks a bit gross... and the premade stuff tastes not really that well... but... well the kids like it... it is sweet, fat rich... and cold... what else does ice need?
actually it is one of the strange things that not even italians make themselves outside germany... strange isn´t it... i bet you get some akward sideglances if you order that dessert in italy itself
Damn Vik!

maybe tomorrow i am able to show you what i have done to the UFO... a bit of change, a bit of progress... soehow the lids don´t take easy to super glue even... but they will yield to my stubbornness^^
well... my son felix is now in school... we try to use the last days without actual school day rutine and with me doing preparation work in my own school to get him out of school early as possible...
i dabble a bit around atm with the build... but after tomorrows session of hobby work i think there is enough to be worth for an update... the last update is almost not connected ti the current look anymore... i had to change quite a lot as the former looked a bit dumb for me^^ tho i kept the character as much as possible...
well... the lil one is now alone in the kindergarden... without his big brother... so he is quite a bit sad and alone...making him really done in when we get him back... and the big one is quite stressed with all the new stuff raining on him...that is a mission and a half!... and all that with 30° ... pffffff....
I honestly wish the US had adopted the Metric system. All this Imperial stuff is ridiculous. I have a bushel of apples that weighs 2 and a half stone that I have to carry 3 leagues from here.
What???
The only metric measurements that ever caught on in the US are 9mm (handgun ammunition), 2 liters (of Coke) and 5 kilos (also coke, just not the kind you drink).

I just spent a few weeks in the UK. They do EVERYTHING wrong! Stone, feet, miles, ounces, yards and all that gak. They drive on the left side of the road, and claim its the right one! Sheesh!
And the only time they use "liter" its spelled wrong and written on a dust bin!

LMAO Only a German could come up with that list , however I would have thought it would be Vik, and they say you Germans have no sense of humour
We don't use STONE, only the Brits do, and I don't know what a stone is?
Bushel is misleading, It's not a unit of weight, it's a unit of volume. it's different weights for different grains.
However much fits into a Bushel Basket is a bushel..generally
Rogue Wolves wrote:I think I need a trip to the internet to find out the origin of the STONE because thats just plain odd
AFAIK a stone is 14ish pounds (6ish kilos) and only used for measuring one's body weight. A League is three miles (though they can't agree if its normal ones nautical miles, which are 1.8km) and it is defined as the distance one can walk in one hour.
I'm so glad we're using the metric system in Gemany!

And all the diabetic cookies come in a plain box of cardboard. So little different than playing with plain plastic-card. On a good note, my roommate just found a new loc-tite product for his store is out and he got me the 1.75 oz or 51.7 ml Go2 glue.
Go2 Glue is a true all-purpose glue that delivers the power of 2 technologies to create Durability & Versatility. hey mate...if you enter with a diabetic coookiepackage that is per rules totally justified...just saying...
what i really want to see is the use of something like this:
together with the tinfoil wrappings...this should be a good challenge...or so i have thought...
and wow... that glue is at least double sized from all the stuff i get myself here... mostly you only get real small bottles or tubes with around 12 ml...
well a long overdue update of the UFO under construction...
here are the pics...
i still need to fill gaps, make the thrustersmoke, and figure out a way to come up with a convincing weaponsystem...which is kinda tricky as the surface of the UFO is somewhat curved...and many ideas of mine already got canceled...if you have any good ideas... spill the beans...
First of great start with all those different coloured circles I keep hearing in my head encounters of the third kind
Looks great though loving the rivets could you not just add something to the edge between the plastic strips, not sure what exactly but to represent some kind of weapon
Is that a ping pong ball great stuff really cant wait to get these for my idea, mind you with a little difference to your interpretation
at dave... actually i was thinking more of that faded grey FW so often uses... th style you showed in your thread... i know the shiney aluminium look would be cool too... but as this will be for the choasy german based army i want to give a slight try i thought a bit of WWII style german look would be better suited for this one...
and RW...thanks mate... but that peril is saved up for you gents ;P
at LDD... but it is sturdy enough for posting any day... and it holds to superglue as anything...
later on i can probably show you some more pics... gapfilling and some minior sculpting deeds took place...
and this will be a cracked earth base i built from cork, tow layers of drip mats... first layer i cut up in a jigsaw pattern and widened the crevices...thenadded a layer of PVA and sand for sturdiness and looks...
so basing and then priming is not too far away... the arming is still the main issue...
thanks mate... was desperatly needed...now i am still needing some nice referrence material for some UFO like guns... any idea what i could use...? i have searched through all my bitzboxes but i was always so unsure what would look good... it needs to look alien, yet imperial at the same time...

the gunmounts and general look of the UFO... should i add some antenas and some satelite dishes too? or would that spoil the surface?
Don't spoil the surface with extra gubbinz! It looks absolutely perfect right now - such a cool model! I haven't had much time to read threads lately, so I just skimread, but seeing this come together has been awesome. Ping pong ball usage is genius, and the rivet strips really make it! it'll be so unique a centrepiece. Love the 50s vibe - perfect with all your automatons. Keep it up vik!
20 pounds i quite a collection and some peeps told me off for wanting to use composable stuff for my creations... i already have quite nice experiments going on with spagetti rivetes... was one of my first methods of getting me nice small ones...
Spagetti Rivets and 20 pounds of mash what has happened here it's more like a food thread these days
That UFO is one bad looking mother what a great use of those bits Vik impressed, I would not add any more to it mind as it looks quite nicely balanced.
You can over do it if you're no careful, so its best to know when to stop this is perfect in my opinion turned out really well.
What paint scheme are you going with ? Classic or your own twist ? What about basing, diorama or simple back drop?
Really love this and cant wait to see this finished

I was only gone for a week and you built an entire UFO!
I like the underslung guns, but I wouldn't add any other stuff. I like the current sleek look! What about adding some doors around the guns so it looks like they can be withdrawn?

yup shaso... sometimes you need a moment to realize what works... and this actually happened faster than light
at rawson..
What about adding some doors around the guns so it looks like they can be withdrawn?
that would have been a truly great idea... alas it is too late... the following pics are the last unprimed moments of this build... the few shown warzone minis from bauhaus will be the upcoming advertised helping hands... got quite a few of them ... will be the painting work as of tomorrow....together with said UFO...
so here are the last pics... and dave? i did as you said... gued the cotton wool on and then sprayed it... i am very interested how tis will turn out...
I must say, I used the cotton wool method before, to represent smoke for some scenery, it looks great if you spray it black then drybrush different colours onto it (I went through yellow, orange and red alongside the black for a kind of firey plume of dark smoke)
that is the plan shrike... tho i used my grey primer but i will paint it black later on all over i think and then redo the grey... as the scheme should look like
Badass Vik! Yeah, feel free to experiment, remember, you can still move it around and sculpt directional curves and such with your fingers or tools if you want to, but it HAS to be completely Black first to look right, I have never tried drybrushing it myself, doesn't it need to be stiffened for that Shrike?
Automatically Appended Next Post: ..It seems like the brush would catch on it and mess it up..
well... childe... after the spraying, or better during the spraying i went in close to the wool and the mere jet of the spray sort of pressed the cotton wool in a thinner form... i think this will satisfy your aesthetics as hopefully does mine...
thanks RW and max... and yes i am eager to paint it too^^
at dave
..It seems like the brush would catch on it and mess it up..
i fear that too... but if it is still too soft then i will add lots of PVA or for that matter dilluted milliput to the surface... it will yield to my will^^
by the way... for stiffening... would hairspray work too?
dsteingass wrote:I have never tried drybrushing it myself, doesn't it need to be stiffened for that Shrike?
..It seems like the brush would catch on it and mess it up..
aye, when I did it, it was stiff from the black spray I gave it. The brush shouldn't catch on it if you're only kind of brushing at the edges- to properly catch on stiff cotton wool, you'd need to have the paintbrush all but inside it. You only need to brush at the exterior to get the effect. I would show you some pics, but I don't have any on my laptop and it's midnight... fairly simple, though.
That is fething amazing that has really turned into a fantastic piece
I can just see the little grey men running around it screaming "phone home phone home" Really cant wait to see the paint on this now to really bring it all together.
I love this so much and the smoke looks pretty spot on to me, reminds me of all those alien films around the eighties early nighties, the smoke I mean.
The ship has that B movie film to it but in a good way

hehehe^^... as long as she deems it the right tempo everything is right if she complains... it is high time to change the pace... in whatever direction....remember rule one:
Viktor von Domm wrote:OMG... by the way... how old are you again? around sixteenish?... and you are a teacher already.... oh my... i fear for humanity^^
well someone can only pretend for a given length of time... after that... he will revert to his true self.... see it as pulling a the air in to make your tummy look slim... sooner or later you have to draw air.... pffffffff......
yeah.... well... all the exess gas will have to be expelled soner or later^^ if it is in fact full of something else... i guess he has to ask her nicely^^
the following pics show the primed and black basecoated ufo... why i am not further in paining it you might ask...
the rod that the ufo and the base is connecting is a bit loose atm and i am still figuing out as to how to stabilize that...the basing materials without a proper plastic base and a good means for support have brought the result of a weak stand... now i have aplied even more sand and PVA to get it hard again... IF this still fails... i will use lots of superglue... or better yet...milliput...
I have an idea!
1. Replace your stand with something sturdy
2. Change the shape of the blast a bit, add the plumes of smoke rolling outward at ground level like a real rocket does?
that is a brilliant idea... i think i need some clump foilage for that... then it will look truly epic... great idea...maybe i get around to get me the material tomorrow....
*big grin* thank you sir^^... but i need to change substantal as it is now not surdy enough and tends to bend and fall over a lot... it is currently resting in a cup upside down...which is not a very honorable way to be resting such a ufo^^
and childe... that might be the case... the rocket cloud idea of dave i think i like to try...beside it would look cool on any table then... no terrain missmatch then...

the tripod arangement sounds like a good idea... i tried my current best witha bit more PVA and sand mixture... for now it seems a bit more sturdy... maybe i get tomorrow some time to paint some more...
war fo the worlds... you can´t get classier than this... ^^ thanks max!
