Took me a while to figure out what the hell "kleets" were.
I thought it might be something from a related, but different language (dutch uses 'k' where English uses 'a hard C' for instance), but then I realised you meant "Cleats".
Very nice detailed work.

Yeah, I will find a way to have the Missile launcher worked in on the side of the turret.

The shape of the tread system for the crawler is nice, you also get to see one in the extra download for Fallout -3 where you get to travel to an airbase and the thing is used by the enemy for satellite control of nukes in orbit!

Hey Shaso, wasn't there a tank that used overlapping shoes on the tread track? something like a deck of cards fanned out. anyways, dude keeps talking about using bread clips as tread shoes in Vik's thread, and the only way that i could figure out how those things could be used as treads would be to overlap them kinda like the cards in the pic.
I also found this on the web tonight, and after seeing it, i'm gonna build this as a super heavy Ork Scorcha.

@Sebastian: Yeah, maybe they overlap that way, I have seen that other shoes overlap, especially the WWI style.
Also, that was an odd engineer vehicle the Soviets made in the 1950's. Hella super-skorcha though!
@Vik: Ok Vik, understood, the money issues I have as well.

There's a Hungarian vehicle that is similar but it is hooked up to a water tanker. It's used to fight fires. Blows a huge spray of mist at the fire. This cools the core below combustion temperatures. Not a water jet, but fine mist which absorbs much more heat. As to the crawler, I saw that on "Dirty Jobs" (Mike Rowe got to grease one of them up and do some of the regular maintenance - while it was moving. The crew who work on it don't have much in the way of kind words for the beast.

Chromedog, yeah, Mike Rowe would find the weirdest jobs that also were filthy to do. Maintaining a moving crawler sounds like Grot Rigger work though.

to tell you the harmfull truth i am not really sold on the methode of this rivetmakeing...i feel already bad for telling you that but i think they look to big...tho this might change when painted...and a thought crossed my mind... you could use a nail and push it slightly into the cured rivet to make an indent... thus better explaining why they are bigger than all your other tank rivets...sorry mate...don´t shoot the bearer of bad news...
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
It does take practice and more finesse, if they do not shrink down right I can just peel them off and work on making smaller ones it is PVA glue, not perma-bond.

the structure will be quite dominant in the finished look...thus maybe you can realy press the look of a WWI tank forward!

Hi Llamamhead, I do not have the Glaive The Lancer is certainly a big boy for an APC.
As for a comparative between the Dragoon and a chimera? Why here are fresh comparison pics to show differences and commonalities between them!
Side by side to give a rough comparison. [/img]
Convoy style pose to see how low slung the Dragoon actually is!
[/img]
The Dragoon, as seen in this above shot is also slimmer than the Chimera, great for streets in cramped cities and villages!
[/img]
Latest version of the Chimera, with the dozer blade is a smidge shorter than the Dragoon!
[/img]
Here, you can see the servo turret of the Dragoon makes it level with the hull of the Cimera.
[/img]
The Chimera however, can hide the dragoon! OOOPS! they forgot to drop the auto-cannon barrel , it is just visible past the Cimera turret, over the Heavy-Bolter.

I hope that those helped.

Chimera and Lancer would be 12 actually. That way you can squeeze a priest and a Commissar in with the squad.

Those ammo boxes are molded on! each bolter is a paret with the ammo box that glues together near the trigger mechanism, and that makes the gluing all the more interesting as you have to maintain some pressure to make sure it does not fall off the pintle or adheres to it!

seeing all this gunmovement going on (and i didn´t catch that the barbarette bolter was movable too) you could fully well name your tank porcupine^^
and yep, was totally meant as a compliment... and for the true connisseur some movies still make props...so i woudln´t stop dreaming but instead try to get your models shown on a broader scale...
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Hmmm, I may have to see if there is a Russian word for such a naming!
LOL! it is a dying art likely for those who want to make low budget movies, but yeah, very possible to accomplish.

Post by: Viktor von Domm
the way i see it, the props makeing is rather more timeconsuming and costbinding than CGI...and to tell you the truth... after seeing babylon 5 the series and the awful prequels to star wars... i wish they had done them with props... that would be much better...
guess there wont be a good and fitting word for porcupine be as the animal isn´t at home in russian speaking countries...as i recall..

Llamahead wrote:Nice work very Mark IV/Char 1 bis vibe you've got going there
And after being swamped with the standard modern designs, and the Leman Russ that has not changed in so many years,, I reemembered the bigger look to the olde tanks , the Char-1 being one I liked when I had the old Matchbox kit that had both it, and a FT-17 in a single kit! I kind of mixed the Mark-IV with the MK-VIII styles with the Char-1. Of course the Perun is wider than the MK-VIII "International" and the other tanks, but not by too much for the size reference.

how do you treat your rivets for your monster tank, and how should i treat mine...paitwise speaking...do you just implement them with the camopaint thats at that specific point and should i do that too or should i bling them up a treat? i have revieted up one side of the trackssystem and now i begin to think about painttreatment...
32676
Post by: Meph
My two cents would be to paint 'm up just with the regular camo. Generally, it looks a bit 'off' when they're all neatly metallic. A tank is put together before it's painted.
You can always have them stand out at a later stage. Accentuate them with some rust streaks, or paint just some of them up in metallic, as if an armour plate has just been replaced etc.
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Pretty much the way I am going Meph, some will have "chipped" and then rust added, and drips of rusty streaks from all of them as the Perun is to be an old gal. BTW, I have made it so venerable a design that it has 2 void shields!

basically a force field that goes on a tank.

If fired upon, i get to ignore a glance or pen shot, even with an Apocalyptic "D" class weapon, "D"= Destroyer! terrain goes poof, so you get no hiding behind something benefits as the shot get's both your tank and the terrain!
The field is also back on if you roll a 6+
Shrike, that explanation was darkly written!

The base of the tank is made from an Abrams model: length and width were pertty good compared to rhinos, but it was way too short, so i grabbed some spare pieces from the Predator Baals kits and built a structure on the main hull, and now i'm adding more details on it: will post more pictures soon.

Hey guys! Im Loving this thread! I love seeing custom or scratch built tanks!
The Perun is Absolutely Fantastic! I commend your skills, Far beyond anything im capable of!
Anyways, onto my tanks!
I have this vehicle, its my Leman Russ converted out of a Rhino. i was bored, and had a good few rhinos laying around wasting space.
I think that this model looks similar to a Bradley fighting vehicle.
Now onto my custom Atlus Recovery and Support Tank!
This is converted out of Guess What? more Rhinos. i had a bunch of random vehicle weapons laying around and spare tank tracks. I put them all over the model, along with ammo, some camo nets, and various supplies to signify that these guys will do combat resupplies, and combat tows/tank recoveries.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
nice tanks firecancer! how did you do the rust effects on your counts as leman russ? looks nice! i also thought for a bit modern feel a rhino chassis could do very well! and the second tank looks very good too! specially the platfrom in the rear, this gives a nice feeling of a resupply vehicle.
cheers, vik
44707
Post by: FireCancer
Thanks Victor!!! The rust effect was pretty simple though time consuming. Its a decently heavy drybrush with Bestial Brown with a little Dwarven Bronze, a heavy wash of Badab Black, a wash with Devlin Mud, then a light drybrush of Snakebite Leather, than a Heavy wash of Ogyrn Flesh. All of this over top the two drybrushes of Boltgun Metal, then Mithril Silver. I also did the Mud effect with elmers glue and sand, painted Bestial Brown with a drybruch of Snakebite Leather. For the Atlus, i plan on picking up the Tank Crew blister in the Bitz section on GW's site. and have them sitting in the back area. Both are still WIP, i have a bunch of putty work to fill gaps. Along with finding Bunch more rhino thread to finish the models up. As you can see they're missing a Lot of threads.

tankstreads for GW tanks are often found on ebay for good value... also i think i´ve meant the sand pva mix that gave the nice rusty feel to the mentioned points... something i have to keep in mind!
facepalm...i mistook the mudeffect with rust...ups^^
44707
Post by: FireCancer
Yeah i havent been to my GW store in a while, and they have a big bitz box that i plan on looking through to find tank treads in.
Yeah, the mud effect kinda Does look like rust and all now that im looking at it. The rust effect i described was what i did to the dozer blade.
And seeing it in photos i kinda feel like i need to redo the aquila i freehanded on the dozer blade, seems lopsided to me haha.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
i would let the aquilla stay as it is, looks really nice and you did even some shadeing effect there to make it look a bit 3D so this is a cool addition.
hmmm the two GW stores i visited so long never had a bitz box... if they had i would be a regular customer i guess...
a good and quick weathering effect you can achieve by simply making a black spot and then not completly filling it with metalpaint... also if you want scratched metalics i also suggest to only drybrush mithril or boltgunmetal on a black basecoat... thus you get nice scratches all over and then later on you can get some nice effects with just washes... helped me a lot...

@Vik: That all depends of who gets to move first, the Perun(Tank-shock/Deathg or glory for Magnotz) or Magnotz move, Waaagh!, assault, Tank shock uses the front armor value, assault uses the more tender back armor.
@MdM: Hmm Prowler does sound nice, as Vik suggested.
@Firecancer: Lovely models! I started the same way, build the normal stuff, then bash a couple of kits together, and now scratch build, so I would say that you are on your way to what Vik and I have been doing. (Yeah, it does help that there are so many tanks laying about for you to work with!) Great work!
44707
Post by: FireCancer
Yeah, im kinda of a perfectionist. I'm gonna fight my urge to redo it haha. Yeah the aquila was done with three seperate shades of Codex grey, either mixed with white or black, then i high lighted it with a mix of codex and mithrill silver. Which i am satisfied with the way it looks. I plan on doing free-hand on the valyrie/vendettas i am planning on picking exactly liek that. And thanks, i've heard people use the black spot method, but i have yet to try it out. I will be trying it on my tanks shortly! Half the reason i am a regular at my GW store is the Bitz Box. Thanks a lot Shasolenzabi! I just sold most of my CSM Infantry and i was left with a few rhinos and predators to toy around with. I am working on another conversion, a Nearly scratch built "Duece and a Half" truck for my IG. No worries, the purpose of this thread is for the odd tanks, and those include scratch/bashed/and just plain odd out of the box! I would have loved getting one of the original Gamilon 3-barreled battle tank kits for use as well, but the were never made, HMMMMM< a potential challenging attempt for a scratch-built-tank project!

Hahah, That would be a fun build! Well, Ill post up this pic of the truck, its still WIP. Made from an Ork Trukk cab, frame and bed. It will be used as a stand-in for a chimera when it comes game time. I have sanding and some extras i still haven't put on yet. waiting on a GW order for some bitz!

So, having seen the size comparison between Viks, Vik-torian tank and a predator, I took a similarly sized chimera and comparison pics came for the Perun and the Chimera and a Leman Russ to better appreciate the Peruns' size(Although not as massive as Vik's Steam powered monster!) Apparently I am addicted to lower slung tank concepts.

well your tank is obiously big but still rightz in scale! i think mine is a bit off the scale (^^) the thing i like about your perun is the form of it...he is a bit more realistic in terms of profile...he is longer and this makes him look way lower than the steamtank of mine...seeing yours and mine tanks i think i will definatly do another tank in the nearer future...i am also now in the planning phase for something walker like...tho the form and how to of the legs gives me the willies....
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Well, Vik, keep in mind that your machgine was built using steam power principles, so that does require more room for the workings and gears and water and fuel hoppers. Mine is still very Russian inspired to be low slung.
Now compared to the Leman Russ
[/img]
Next each other in profile. The Leman Russ looks rather stubby.
[/img]
Height comparison, the Perun is taller than the Leman, even with it's modified turret that is taller than the standard Russ turret,
[/img]
Width, what can one say? Superheavies are a totally different class of tank! Perun is easily 2 Leman Russ tanks wide!
[/img]
Head to head, you can see how the Leman and Perun do not quite see eye to eye at all!

Post by: Viktor von Domm
yeah did quite some research already^^ is a long term project, often abondoned by me...
i just saw that the spnsons are quite big...much bigger than any vanilla GW sponsons, this is too a good reason why the perun looks so much better than the stubby LR...also two way sponsons are double win... it is clear that the leman russ is with such a weapon layout planned for frontal attacks and not to stay its ground...the perun is a fortress and thus needs the multi directional systems. i think in battle the perun will last many times longer than the standard leman russ...not only through it´s extra equip but mainly through multidirectional firepower... it will be pretty nasty to get into an angle to get close enough to tackle the perun...
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Hence it's nickname, the Dikobraz(Porcupine). I did not like that the sponsons on the Leman Russ are limited to the 90degrees either. so many FW big tank sponsons, though single weapons, have a 120 degree arc at least.
So the Perun, from sponson to sponson edgemeasures 6" or 15.2cm, and is 9.5"long or 22.8cms long Automatically Appended Next Post: I think making the simplest legs works for steam punk

Post by: Viktor von Domm
funny i measured the steamtan too today...he is 30cm long, and about 20cm give ot take wide...height i currently forgott^^
i think i should wait a bit with making a steampunk walker...what my army really needs is a transport...this would also make me able to make something not that big and a bit more true to actual size...tho still rather truescale^^
also i feel very honored that you stick to the nickname^^
2326

So, the Steam-punk tank is a big beast! (Apocalyptic scales!)
Well, it is a good nickname, and biohazardcake went to the effort of letting us know the word for it.

definatly apocalyptic scale...as in when its barrels roar the apocalypse is at least for some starting already^^

Also, it is a superheavy clkass like the Perun, so both tanks would be good for massive point valued battles of over 3000pts or more Automatically Appended Next Post: Based on your measurements, your tank will make this stand off look even more lopsided!

It has apparently been not an option he considers.
Anyway, I do promise pics of exposed metal on rivets, and plates, as i figure the sponsons will get scratched when they push in for storage, as well as oiled on the sponsons, I will find something to be rust and or just dirt streaking down.
Btw, I have drawn some design ideas for the thread for the Ork Fighta-Bomma I will make, the Snogrot Speshul! aka Sn-87(1 thru 86 all crashed) "Snuka"

Okay, time for some wear and tear on that mighty old Perun, many years of scraping with tools and such on the boltys and other bits sticking out, boot scrapes and such, now where is exposed "metal" will also get Tin bitzed and other colors to make it look like areas neglected, and rusting. Oh the horrors!

despite the mostly blurred or badly lighted pics the weathering looks very good...will you tone down the shiny effect of the scratched metal? at first it really made my heart ache to see the perun be that scratched all over^^ but then perspective tuned in and i have to say this will make him doubly cool^^
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Well, the next step was the tin bitz added tot he silvery bits, a good dirty wash should help as well, and i do have somne salt to mix into a material to make that very pitty/corroded sensation. But for now:

the saltthing you have planned will be amazing!
one thing so, now the treads look a shade too dark... a bit of lightening up i think with some very dry drybrushing of a fairer metalic could do then wonders...
the new bomma thread i already commented on and subscribed to already too^^ looks very promising... when will you start the actual modeling?

Next I will dry brush more clean metal, and add "mud" to the treads. I will glue patches of salt, and then paint bits of color on them. Oh this tank is shaping up sweetly!

Now to see if I can make the salt and stuff mix for getting the rust and wear, maybe not this bad, but close?
This looks also a good way for me to go, with my washes and such
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the washes technique is something i wanted to do too to my tank...i need to find me a vid for that tho...mere pics can´t explain it sufficiently...
and in referrence to the first pic...don´t ruin your nice paintjob by going all rusty...tho while the perun is an artefact probably it is still one that is kept working and cared for i guess with the utmost willpower to keep archeotech alive and kicking... so the imperials would not allow to get such a big fighting engine in such a bad state...that would be an instant act of heresy...
go for the total wash job and a tad rust and some salt only...

That's actually one of those things that's a bit counter-intuitive, rust on vehicles.
Often times, the most extreme looking rust is the least damaging surface rust. It's the stuff you can't see, the little spot rust, and the rust that's under the paint, that does the most damage.

Yeah, I do like the wash appraoch for accumulated grime better myself.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the bubble effect could be done with just paint over salt...or snad for that matter... as i recall there is a special kind of san out there... wasn´t it beach sand that has round grains?
yep, grime is much better than open rust for the perun... he can be dirty all the way, provided he gets the job he is assigned to done... rust as said before would mean heresy by the crew...*cogs boltpistol*
2326

Well, I g\have the salt ready to get glued on and worked through, then rub it off or something like that, or leave it as part of the grime effects.

Of course you already know that the "factory finish" will not be long once I reach a certain point and get those girls dirtied up with mud and grime and such.
Oh yes, Perun's rusty tracks with streaks of bared metal to give that "scraped clean" look.
[/img]
[/img]
[/img]
That effect was inspired by seeing hosed off tractor treads that had rust, but also had that look with exposed bare metal as the rocks and sand scraped the rust off the metal shoes.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
you just have to love these scratches on the sponsons...cool work matey! the tracks look now very good, the reason behind the current look is very sound! a true ancient warbeast...
2326

Those scratches are to show she scratched the paint as they slid the sponsons into the hull for transport in tighter areas!

I am debating the leaving it as it looks like dirt I have seen before on vehicular cases where the mud had yet to be hosed off, and it seems to have made me think that this was brilliant!
24297

i too think it is suitable as a very thick layer of spalttered mud that reached higher ground and now clings to the face of the tank for the sheer hell of it^^

I used the shield shaped citadel palette, poured some salt into one of the round paint mix areas, and then with a lot fo paint on the brush began mixing paint to the salt crystals, and then brushed it all on, as if I were smearing real mud almost!
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
is this supposed to work that way? i thougt you first used something like hairspry on tank, then add salt and then when dried aply paint... later have salt peeled off and reveal paint underneath...the pattern the slatcrystals make then is something the eye would take for scratches and so on...
