That completed building looks amazing! I'm gonna have to look this all over on my bigger monitor the phone isn't doing justice. Its projects like these that make me ridiculously excited to get my dead zone tiles.
welcome back skalk havent seen you update in a while glad to see your terrain is moving forward love the out post and i think the blue actually adds a touch of character but thats my thought on it...
everything looks good as normal so keep it up and glad to have you back
Great work as usual skalk I thought you slipped up for a second, the grate on the floor by the big blue box looked like you glued a pretzel to the floor , guess I'm hungry right now can't wait for more genius to pop up.
He's back baby! Looking good, really like the roof, and the tubes look great. If that's not final drybrush, very interested to see what's up next. Do you have any non-terrain plans at the moment, btw?
Reusing old stuff so resourceful and matched up really well, I kind of like the blue cabinet thing makes it stand out.
Is that those plaster sections put to good use I see, the pipe sections look even better with a dash of paint and brave but successful red colour scheme.
@ GrimDork- What is Dead Zone? I looked it up but found nothing. I don't need new stuff but I'm always interested in seeing what's out there available. And I'll consider your weathering idea for the big blue box.
@ alabamaheretic- It's good to get back here as I can. I don't think I'll be back regularly until mid-Fall / early Winter, though I will take a moment here and there to post whatever I can.
@ Andy_T- Hey, thanks for stopping by and posting. I always appreciate people showing an interest. You subbed during a bit of a lull in activity but stay subbed, things will pick up and I'll have more terrain goodness to share on a more regular basis.
@ Theophony- I have a few strict rules with my modeling, one being never use food in a structural / permanent function. I've seen guys use sugar on bases. Bad idea. I've seen people use food coloring as a wash. Pretzels would be right out.
@ inmygravenimage- Uhm, not really, but my heart is still in it and I miss my modeling / Dakka time. No non-terrain pieces on deck at the moment. I have an idea for a vehicle on my Necromunda thread but I have a few things to do before I really go anywhere with it.
@ Dr H- Another vote for blue. Hmm. I'll see what I can do to fix it enough to where I like it. More coming for sure.
@ lone dirty dog- More blue. I really do have to fix it up then. Maybe I'll make a TARDIS out of it. Yes those are plaster casts, I figured this was a safe a place for them as I'll find since the piece has space on my shelf instead on in a box w/ smaller random stuff.
@ dsteingass- I think overall everything I do could be a mix / match. Random junk pairs with random junk quite well. Can you imagine what my table would look like if I were an Ork player?
Thanks everyone for the comments. I always appreciate the feedback.
Nothing new to offer today except a couple ideas. First and foremost is I've decided to redo my Necromunda 4x4 table. I've been considering a few options. One is to keep the current texture but spray it with different rust / brown / black blends. The flat 'ash waste' look goes well w/ my 40K layout but it is a bit too plain for Necromunda. Another idea is to use sheets of plastic / etc to create a more 'huge expansive platform' look. I thought a lot about foamboard and making the table more layered / 3-D so to speak but decided against it. The last time I tried that it limited the terrain layout too much. So things will remain flat but with more texture. Whatever I do I'll give it some decent attention and I'm sure my efforts will be rewarded with the same level of cool I have been achieving. Every now and then I surf through the earlier projects I've done and the improvements are notable.
Another quick project I've been thinking about is slag heaps / junk piles. Like massive ones that would be 15'-20' scale ft tall. I'll be using foamboard or styrofoam with a few layers of Elmers and latex paint for a sealer and a hardboard base for stability and durability. It will be an 'inner core' so I don't use up a couple pounds of bitz to make a huge pile. I'll be layering a few pieces so it will have a 3-D effect instead of looking like a macaroni poster from 3rd grade.
When picked up all that junk from work it was w/ the intent that I was going to do an Ironman terrain piece last weekend becasue I was on call for work and was going to be home anyway. The idea was: those bitz + 5 hours = finished project no matter what. I'd be taking pics and offering a couple updates as I made progress. You can see how well that worked out. I had 7 hrs worth of calls on Saturday and Sunday I had 3 plus various IRL responsibilities that needed tending to. It's something I want to do so I will make time for it soon.
Again, thanks ffor the comments, and be assured that much more is coming.
Slag piles sound cool. Deadzone is a skirmish board game hybrid that just got kickstarted last month. 28mm SciFi set in mantics warpath universe. It may not be a direct replacement for necromunda but I think it has the potential to catch/surpass in at least a few ways. The terrain is a system of 3" grids that are supposed to socket together with connectors and be able to take then back apart. If you search the kickstarter page for dead zone it should pop right up.
@ GrimDork- Thanks for the explanation. I'll keep an eye out for it.
@ dsteingass- Example please? Neat side note- if you do a Bing image search for 'necromunda risers' the majority of photos that pop up are by me or Bruticus. Ha. If you use Google you get hits for all 3 of us through the page. But none of them shows me what I was looking for.
Just raised blocks that you can rearrange and stack different terrain elements on. If you made them all 3" the same size as a bulkhead, you add all sorts of vertical depth, more walkways, etc.
I don't have examples yet, because I don't think it's been done yet. Basically raise parts of the table 3"- then place building bases on top, giving you another dimension of depth to play with.
I love the idea of making terrain and scenry out of any odds and ends,
and that's great collection you've got there, cant wait to see what you build next .
@ Camkierhi & dsteingass- that's a really good idea.
@ hk1x1- Thank you. I really like picking up random junk from parking lots, sidewalks, car washes, side of the road, recycle bins, etc. Just little bits here and there. I've been told (usually when doing laundry) that I have more weird and random junk in my pockets is worse than an 8 year old.
Not a modeling update per se, but I did build something this last weekend and it has already made a huge improvement to my collection and the game room overall:
No more burying things on top of other things behind other things. Functional, accessible, and a decent display of my work. This shelf is for my smaller pieces. I used 8" wide boards with a 'reveal' so the smaller pieces are easy to find and easy to use.
The larger pieces will stay on my original shelf, and I finally have a home for my WFB terrain:
The thing I like best about both shelves is EMPTY SPACE, which means the 15+ unfinished terrain projects I intend to finish at some point will have a place to live.
But burying things is one of the best parts of the hobby. Later when your looking for something that you know you have you have to scavenge and dig. Just like your gangers. Along the way you find all those other treasures hiding in the piles. Just keep a weary eye out for looters and claim jumpers.
@ Coldsnap- You really should. I'm very happy with how this has helped me organize all my terrain. I took the pics a bit early, I added more stuff like my hills etc afterwards and there is still plenty of space left for my future projects to take up when they are done.
@ Theophony- As cool as it can be sometimes, I've intentionally moved away from the whole "WOW! I haven't seen this in 10 years!" method of storing things. I've extremely fortunate to have the space I have for my hobby stuff and I'm not going to go back unless I wind up moving to a much smaller house.
@ lone dirty dog- See above.
@ Galorn- There are a couple WIP in those pics that I haven't share yet. Spoilers, spoilers.
@ Moltar- The Warp is omnipresent and I'm fortunate to phase out of it ever now and then. Building those shelves was an affirming moment and I agree that my terrain looks a lot better when it is displayed opposed to piled.
Nothing new to update right now but I have a few hrs of modeling scheduled for tonight so I'm hoping to at least show some progress on whatever I decide to work on. I've been thinking about putting some work into old projects like my Imperial buildings, but chances are I'll finish up some of my smaller pieces for that 'I finished something' feeling. It's like a drug to me and I'm jonessin' for a plastic fix.
@ shasolenzabi- I'd say 99% of my games are 'home games'. I don't get out much to play at my FLGS.
Last night I did some work on smaller bitz but didn't finish anything worth a photo so nothing new to share work-wise, but I did want to share this link. Theo has already posted there and I think the rest of the LoER / terrain building crew would really appreciate his work:
This post is specifically for GiraffeX but may be of use to other people as well. Today's topic is barbed wire.
In the first series of photos / instructions I am using floral arrangement wire, but after I finished I realized that the scale was too large for the application GiraffeX intended, so at the end of this tut I have other photos where I am using much smaller wire and there are some changes to the instructions.
Here's the wire I used. It is easily available from any craft shop:
Scale reference:
Here I've measured out a single strand of wire and doubled over. It is better to have too much than too little as it doesn't stretch. Notice the loop at the end:
Next is where the work starts. First I clamp one end firmly and securely and then use a rod (in this case a paint brush handle) to twist the wire into a double strand:
Once I have the main strand of wire ready to go, I cut short lengths of wire to use as the barbs. Again, it is better to use too much than too little, and no worries on the length as you'll be trimming it later. You may want to use pliers to get the first loop but after that you can just use your fingers:
An alternate method is to pre-wrap your barb and then slide it onto the main strand. Here I am using a bead file but anything of similar diameter will work. In either case, ensure you have a triple loop:
This is an example of what the barb will look like after it is attached to the main strand. If the barb is too loose you can crimp it with your pliers:
This is where the scale got a bit wonky. My previous applications have been for terrain only and the scale wasn't as much of an issue. :
Here's a creative addition to the wire- wrapping like concertina.
Here's a series of the finished product, paint, and then applied to a model:
As I said in the beginning, the scale is a bit large and is not going to work on individual model bases. I found different wire in my tool box and it is much thinner. Here I've already done some work as the technique to get it to this point is similar:
In this pic you'll see a double-strand barb on the far right. It looks cool but it is much more work-intensive to make it look right. It may be worth the effort depending on your application, but be prepared to sink about twice the amount of time into this project if you go that route. The rest of the barbs are the same 3-loop single strands I mentioned earlier:
Closeup:
And finally, and action shot w/ application on a standard 25mm round base. I think the scale is close enough to not look completely out of place::
I hope this is of value to someone, and stand by for an update on this as last night I figured out how to mass-produce this stuff very quickly with excellent quality, I just need to build the frame.
I have seen a similar technique Skalk, one that used a power drill to save effort on twisting up the wire to get nice tight twists. I wonder if a dremel has enough torque to do that.?
All- Thank you, nice to know I can still offer relevant ideas.
@ sennacherib- I've used that before with much thicker wire when I was making a chainmail tunic. Drill worked great for that project but I would advise against that setup w/ this wire as it is so thin. I imagine that 1,000,000 RPM (or whatever it really is) would wind it up and snap it off in an instant.
Well uninsulated copper might snap, but the plastic coating holds it in place, I've done this before. In fact, that's exactly how they make twisted pair cables. You obviously want to use a variable speed cordless drill, not a high-powered electric drill.
I've heard that pipe cleaners that have the bristles burned off with a lighter provide scale appropriate twisted wire for a base. Pull one of them apart for the barbs.
You can also get the pre-twisted picture-hanging wire, but that stuff is harder to cut, being galvanized steel. (It'll ruin your clippers) They sell different sizes/thicknesses though.
I've been silently following this thread for a long time, and I've got many great ideas and inspiration from it, I though I might as well throw my two cents in for once.
I've used the copper wires from networking or coms cables with decent results; AWG 24 gauge wire has a .51 mm diameter after stripping the insulation (Although the same or very similar to the one you used, from the look of the pics, so still too thick maybe for what you are looking for this time).
Spoiler:
(I don't want to intrude on your thread, so I spoilered these; just let me know if I shouldn't have to edit them out)
Single copper threads from an electrical stranded wire are thinner than that, and would probably be a better fit scale-wise.
For twisting the wire for the main double strand, a cordless power drill works great, a dremel on the other hand would probably be to fast (0-750 rpm versus 10.000 rpm at least).
Lastly, I also made the barbs from a single, uncut piece of wire (Three turns around the main wire, a short "open" loop until the next barb, three thigh loops around the core wire again and so on), and then cut out the loops/trimmed the barbs to the desired length.
(This way you'd waste more material -and probably spread cuts of wire all around the place; wearing proper eye protection is recommended, those bits tend to fly around-, but work much faster than using a single short length for each barb).
Correction to offer- sennacherib was right, I was wrong. This weekend I decided to try it so I built a bracket for my Black & Decker drill and using 26GA wire it worked out very well, twisted a strand appx 2 ft in 10 seconds, didn't break, and it's ready for barbs.
My work on terrain is random right now, I'm not working on anything specific. I'll try to finish a strand of barbed wire soon and share it here. It looks very promising for mass production if my next 2 ideas work out.
Man, I can't believe that I posted something w/o addressing anyone first. That's not like me at all. Probably a headspace day.
ANYway...
@ dsteingass- right as always. Your Terrain Fu is strong. (x2) I think that is the stuff (picture wire) that I found in my tool box and was the 2nd set of pics I posted. Not sure. Packaging for that wire was likely lost before I was born. I got that wire in a tool box I bought at a garage sale many years ago, and all of the tools in it were made in America.
@ Jeffar- I'm going to try that and see if it works out for smaller applications where I'll be hand-twisting.
@ graven- Thank you. I have inspiration every now and then.
@ Littletower- thanks for posting! It's always very cool to see people step out of the dark and contribute. Never worry about posting your pics here. I started the thread to log my progress and get feedback, but also for other people to share thier work as well. You are encouraged to share your ideas so I can -steal- learn new techniques. Many people that follow this thread have been huge inspirations for me. You've just joined the club. Your barbed wire looks excellent and the application on the bases shows the scale perspective. I'm going to try the 'loop' idea as well. It is more material cut out, but it's not wasted by any means. I might hold on to it for 20 more years but eventually it'll be used to secure a girder, make a power coil, etc.
@ alabamaheretic- I'm looking forward to seeing your take on this. There seems to be many 'right' ways to do it. If you come up with another idea please be sure to share.
@ GiraffeX- No problem. It dusted off the technique I used and gave me some better ideas. Plus it inspired others to share how they do it, so overall it was a worthwhile endeavor.
Nothing 'terrain related' today, just saying 'hello' to everyone that posted earlier. I do have a couple new things that I'll share over the weekend. Nothing major, just a few more fiddly bits to put on the table. Because as you all know, I need more barrels and crates and piles of random junk.
One thing I'm working on is a Power Cell generator. I'm having a go at my first genuine OSL. I don't like it so much yet but like many of my projects I'm extremely critical of my work and everyone else likes it. If nothing else it will be a good start for something I can improve on. I've always hesitant to step outside my comfort zone when I don't know how to do something. I admit that is ridiculous because I can't learn a technique and improve on it if I don't ever try it in the first place, but it seems so daunting and I'd rather make dirty rusty things than 'fail' at something new. Such is the logic of Skalk Bloodaxe.
Another thing I've been working on is more dirty rusty piles of junk (ha!). Quick, easy, and always has an application on the tabletop whether it's 40K or Necromunda. I've been doing the 'random bitz' thing again and making use of stuff I've been hauling around for years (because I'll use it someday. Really, I will!) and I'm happy with the results so far. Ah, the sweet feeling of accomplishment!
Going way OT on this last bit, but wanted to finally mention it. You may have noticed that I've been around Dakka a lot more recently. IRL was kicking me down for a while, but I started to kick back and I've cleared out a lot of things that kept me from having time or interest in the things that I enjoy the most. So tomorrow I'm riding to NY to visit a friend I haven't seen in 2 years. Next week
Spoiler:
I'll finish a huge project I've been working on for my Cultist thread
and overall things are pretty decent. I do not share my negative stuff on Dakka because it is my escapist microcosm for modeling and community and I'm not going to screw that up. But I will share triumphs, and I'm feeling more awesome right now than I have in many months. So cheers to personal victory and being back on Dakka! Expect good things from me in the future. It's getting colder and darker around here these days. That is my clarion call to build a fire, grab a beer, and paint little toy soldiers.
Well glad to see you kick life back hopefully sqaure in the junk!
Fiddly bitz are always good i need more of them in my life.
I do miss your thread being updated always had cool ideas...i actually stepped outta my comfort zone today as well and hope to keep improving...well fire and beer is fine as long as you dont melt your little plastic men. take care buddy
I feel ya Bro...I've had my bouts recently too with not finding enjoyment in the things I love. I used to love watching Football, but last weekend I was watching, and I couldn't help but think "What is the point?" the announcers were beyond irritating me, they were just plain annoying to me. I kept thinking "how can you asswholes seriously waste your entire lives talking about this pointless waste of time day in and day out?" My Hobby Bench was a disaster, and I didn't even want to look at it anymore. I don't have the answer by any means, but I forced myself clean it up and start a project and that really did help. I hope you get your groove back bro. We love seeing the wonders you create! As Red Green would say "Keep your stick on the ice, we're all in this together"
Great to hear Skalk. I need to spend more time browsing awesome threads like yours. Aside from updating my own threat to keep motivated I have done next to zero... I need to make the time because your thread is awesome and there are so many good threads going on on dakka. I feel honored to be a member of such an amazing community of creative people.
I wish so much that I could meet you folks in person. I know that a start is to begin attending GT events and such.
Anyways, I wont be a stranger. Keep on the great work building a better battlefield.
Small update, didn't get as much modeling time in as I had hoped but I traded that time to play M:TG w/ the kids so it was very well spent.
Before I get started, I want to point out that except for the 2 pre-built items you'll see in a moment, everything was built and mostly painted Friday night. I was a whirlwind of productivity. I did not pull out the models I've already started. I'll save those for another update.
Anyway, I was going through my bitz Friday night and found the broken pieces of a barrier I used to use for 40K / Necromunda from when I lived in VA. I always knew something was 'missing' from my models but I did the best I could and in this case I just drybrushed Bolt Gun Metal over a black primer. Here's how it looked once I (mostly) put it back together.:
While pondering what to do w/ it my eyes focused in on this piece on my shelf:
A few 'snaps' and cuts later, this is what happened:
Skipping ahead, this is where it is now:
There's a lot of work left to be done but I think it is a significant improvement to the piece overall and a more logical use of the old Necromunda barrier. This building is going to be one of my centerpieces once it is done.
If you were a fan of the large blue box that was on the 'roof' earlier, fear not. It was salvaged into a playable piece instead of being cast back into the bitz bin. I added the skull (which was cut from a Necromunda bulkhead from from the same time frame and the barricade earlier) and I added another random bit from a broken HO scale train I've had for over 2 years. It's not a clean or detailed model, but it'll serve my needs and will look well enough to fit in w/ the rest of my table.
I also decided to finally finish the last of the Tunnel / Vent access points. 2nd pic is of WIP, not finished models:
Next 4 pics are of 2 projects that I'm mostly please with. Blown up pics on my monitor showed me a couple places that need some cleanup. First 2 pics are my favorite collection of junk I've built in a while. And since I have a lot of those GW 20mm movement bases I'll be making a lot more of these. Easy to build, easy to configure into larger pieces on the table, and keeps me closer to my 'use what you have' approach to modeling.
The 2nd set of pics are a piece w/ 40mm WFB base. I like this one a lot as well, but there's a lot of cleanup to do on the red barrel and a bit to do in other various places. The vegetation was intentional. I try to show fluff on my table as much as possible, and the greenery on this model is of wild fungus. Hivers gather that stuff as part of a staple of their diet. I like having some on the board now and then, and would make a great objective marker depending on the game scenario:
First set:
Second set:
And finally, the largest haul I've scored in quite a while. I was at the local flea market this morning as found a HUGE box full of old and broken model train parts. I figured he's want at least $50 or even more, but I still asked. He pondered for a moment, LITERALLY rubbed his chin as he figured things out, and then said '$20'.
...
I pulled my wallet out so fast I almost broke the sound barrier. I brought the box home, went though everything, threw out a lot of random junk like power cables not related to the set, papers and trash, etc. Pic below is what I kept:
That's it for this one, thanks for looking. I'll be back with more soon.
WHOA! Is that all O scale??? (other than the smaller stuff?) Great find for $20!!
I love the truck bed, but it needs a different rust color or some chipped paint over top. Also, where did you get the little red lockbox? That's a very nice accessory piece! Also, the little roll of fencing is badass! great idea!
@ dsteingass- Oh man I wish. The tank is O but the rest is HO and N. It is a small matter though, I've used HO for terrain and so long as I put a few bits on it that force perspective (such as that Fuel Depot piece I did) it all works out pretty well. I agree on the truck bed but haven't come up w/ an idea that works. I will probably try painting it light blue or green so it will be distinct from the rest of the junk, but be sure to rust / damage it up so it is believable as a scavenged hunk of junk put into use as a Gang hideout. I'm going to put up one more small wall to enclose the entire 'roof' and use a hatchway to represent access in and out.
@ Camkierhi- Oh yeah, it is. My mind is spinning with ideas.
@ alabamaheretic- When I handed the guy the $20 and picked up the box I wanted to run around the flea market doing this:
Spoiler:
@ Dr H- Ha! Yeah, that Plague Zombie won't be hanging around much once my Goliath gang moves in.
@ Theophony- I can't wait to see what I do with them either. I have so many ideas that my brain almost hurts.
Putting more terrain on the back burner for a few days so I can finish a project I'm doing w/ my Cultists. It will be very cool.
Thanks for all the feedback. I'll be making some changes and posting them as soon as I have updates.
@ Briancj- The thing I like best about it is that it is all junk. I don't feel bad about ripping any of it up.
Not much to show today, just a few small pieces. I had a few moments to model this weekend and I could not bring myself to work on any piece larger than a 3X3 base. But I did push myself to finish a few things and build a few more.
First up is a few completed pieces, two of which had some 'Dakka time while back when I first built them. The one on the far left is something I made around the same time frame but never posted.
Closeups. First piece is from the 'random bitz' weekend. Believe it or not, the base color is gray. I weathered it with salt and a lot of washes. Second piece is the chime from my Volvo painted flat green and dabbed rust over the top. Generally I prefer rust to come from the inside out, but this was a quick and dirty job that I wanted to finish so I dabbed on the rust and figure it looks decent enough. The last bit is from a 1/35 M1 Abrahams that I bought and started building during Desert Shield. It's been moved around a lot since then and wasn't shown a lot of love during those moves so it wound up in more piece than it originally came with. This is my effort to give it some relevance again, one barricade and junk pile at a time.
Group shot for scale perspective:
You'll recognize the next bit because of the blue box. I decided to use a broken 40mm and 25mm square base to expand this out a bit and be cool in a general random sort of way. I don't know what else I'm going to do with it. We'll see I suppose.
Here's a good example of a little bit extra work vs. sick of it and calling it good enough. Crates / barrels on the left are done. I don't really care that they aren't up to regular standards. I've hated this piece since I built it and it's as done as it is getting. Barrels on the right however got some extra attention and I think the fluid leaks and partial rust / corrosion effect worked very well. Subtle, but still there.
I put a lot of work into this next bit so I'm showing a WIP and then the completed build. I've been trying that 'use the old stuff I've been hauling around for 20 years' approach to these smaller pieces and I think I've been doing pretty well with that. The base is a 20mm 'mass movement' from a zombie set (or maybe skeletons? I can't remember), the main girders are bits left over from the gated bridge I started, and the rest are from the depths of my bitz box.
Next is a few things bashed together but I think it looks pretty cool. Two parts are from the original Rhino set, the the plate w/ the valve wheel is from an old anti-aircraft gun from a 1/48 set but I can't remeber what the model was. The pipes / whatever are from a conversion a buddy of mine did in '96 or '97 for his Ork 'looted wagon' Rhino, and the base is a standard 40mm square:
And finally, a shot of one evenings build. I didn't mention the base in front w/ the single barrel earlier because it's not done and I'm not sure why it is in this pic. A glimpse into the future I suppose.
That's it for this one. I'm still grinding away, just a bit slower these days. Thanks for looking. I'll be back.
Awesome terrain bits, bud! Weathering looks good and fairly uniform, so they look great next to each other. I'm partial to that first "random bits" piece.
Thanks for the compliment, and the verification that I need to salt more. Salt weathering is something I've become good at (credit to Bruticus for that) but I don't do it very much these days. Not sure why. I need to get back on track w/ that.
"not much to show" but there seems to be plenty to look over...
The little random bitz thing is a cool little lump of machinery.
The volvo piece is good, but I think it could do with a few little dabs of darker rust amongst the rest of the rust.
The tank piece is also cool.
The blue box is going places. I like the little bits of wood sticking out and look forward to what happens on the extra space.
and all the other random pieces are looking good.
Like the rusty barrel and the leaky sci-fi barrels.
@ Camkierhi- I think taking random junk and turning it into specific junk is my modeling superpower. I've always had the vision, but it's only in the last year or so that I've learned how to weather and force scale perspective. It's all coming together now and I'm enjoying it a lot more (mostly).
@ Dr H- Yeah, I did notice that later. Maybe I was lowering expectations so it looked cooler. Ha. I agree about the Volvo chime. Looking at it over and over I've decided it needs some salt. The blue box keeps showing up in all sorts of places. I'm starting to wonder if it doesn't travel through time and relative dimensions in space. And I'm glad you like the sci-fi barrels. I want to do more stuff like that. I like those barrels a lot but I hate that they are plaster. I'd like to find some of that exact cast in resin.
@ dsteingass- I don't understand what you mean, but I'm sure it is something cool so thank you.
Thank you all for the compliments. I'll start putting paint on them next week or so, I'm booked pretty solid for the rest of this week and weekend. But I do have a bit to share. I didn't clean up my desk after dumping out my bitz box the other day so I put a couple more junk piles together while listening to the game last night so it would be less stuff I have to clean up.
First piece is made up of more parts from the 18 wheeler model I never built (this is circa 1980-something), some Pegasus Hobbies bits that were left over from stuff I chopped up, a part from the Abrahams, a broken 25x40mm WFB calvary base, a small bit from a train trestle, and a differential gear box from a Humvee model I bought the same itme I picked up the Abrahams.
Next is made up of the quatrer panel of a 1/25 '56 Chevy, wheel well guard from the Humvee, Pegasus plate, bit from a Space Marine Rhino hatch, window from a O scale building, some random sprue, and a bogey wheel from a Soviet T55 (?) tank.
Last one is more parts from the 18 wheeler, treadplate, different bogey wheel from a different Soviet tank, a chunk from the Abrahams, and a Pegasus grate.
I'm probably going to keep doing this for a while since I didn't clean up my desk last night either.
@ Moltar- So am I, though it is way outside my SOP. I start to twitch if I have more than a handful of stuff on my desk and let me tell you, there's way more than a handful right now.
@ inmygravenimage- Right back at you. I'm still trying to replicate your turquoise highlights.
@ dsteingass- Ah, ok. I didn't know that.
Nothing new to share today, and probably not for a few more days after this. I have to get my re-purposed model based and entered into graven's contest tonight (I'm finally going to finish a contest since the first LoER) and after that I'm flat out w/ IRL stuff.
My intent is to get some paint on those new junk piles. Once I have those done I'll likely try larger junk piles of a similar fashion, though I'll be using a lot of sprue for the bulk of it. I have a huge bitz bin but there's no sense in burying stuff that looks cool. I'm continuing the theme of post-APOC and the 'survivors' (aka my Cultists collection) are brutal and somewhat impractical horde of scavengers. Kind like Necromunda but on a global scale instead of a single Hive. I'm planning going to go back to my unfinished Imperial buildings, but those projects are a couple months at least (unless I change my mind).
I'd like to see your work where something still has remnants of white paint, safety orange, and maybe even a turquoise or other blue-green shade I think your decaying junk could also use stripes of some kind or another on certain pieces.
@ Grimdork- No, but it's mostly due to overlooking that detail. I'll go through my pieces and see if there are any that would benefit from doing this. I have terrible freehand so I'm not that excited about it.
Not much time to post.
First up is an RJ45 female to female telephone adapter that I converted into a refrigerator. Far from finished but it is a start. Notice the awesome job I did scoring the top and sides to show the doors:
Here's the start of my larger junk pile:
A few random piles I've made over the last few days:
And finally, a rare shot of my desk in duress. Look in the top right corner for a glimpse of the first coat of white on the fridge.
That's it for now, more coming soon. I'll be back.
Always fun to pop in and see what awesome you've come up with from random stuff. I tried it a bit, but I'm just going to wait for my deadzone terrain to come in and maybe sign up for some battle systems interiors. I just don't have "the thing" some of you guys do with making such awesome little scenery pieces

Nonsense Grim... Everybody can fiddle together linear terrain. You wanna know the big secret? (and i'm sure i'll be lynched for telling)
Don't think!
There, thats the secret... just cobble some stuff together and paint. Don't think too much about it looking good or working together or not. Linear terrain is usually junked up barricades. People don't think when the throw stuff away now do they. I never think hrmmm... does this fridge sit right next to that tire? Nope, just toss it, prime it, paint it...
( now dont lynch me guys, i told him the secret...)
The refridgerator is killer! I have a few cat 5 connectors floating around in my junk that I had no idea what I was ever going to use them for and you have me thinking about digging them out now!! Generator in the back upper left corner is really good looking too.
@ Theophony- I have over a dozen good eyes in my Chaos Mutation bitz box.
@ Dr H- The generator thing- it is a resin cast of an industrial roof vent for O scale buildings. I bought it on eBay a long while back.
@ inmygravenimage- You do realize I need to build one of those now, yes?
@ Camkierhi- Thank you for the compliment.
@ GrimDork- It's easier than you might think. Here's the step-by-step tut:
1- find a suitable base (40mm to 60mm GW bases work great for this)
2- grab a bunch of random bitz. They do not have to have any relevance to one another, you just need enough to cover the base
3- glue everything to the base (I use super glue and / or polystyrene glue depending on the application) and let dry
4- spray base coat, let dry, paint individual bitz, spray matte clear coat, done.
@ MauS- Hi
@ rustbucket- Looks like the 'fridge and the generator thingy need to be bumped to the top of my list.
Had some modeling time last night so I have some new pics to share. Everything is still WIP.
Mostly finished, just need a few finishing touches:
A bit of work on the fridge. Texture is on purpose, used a stippling effect. The tissue on top is holding the door handles I am going to use later.
I have no idea what this is supposed to be, but it looks cool.
More work on the barrel. I think I did a decent job on the muck inside it
That's it for new work.
A question for all of you that follow this thread- what level of interest would you all have in a quick 'linear terrain' contest? Would it even be appropriate? The current LoER contest is wrapping up soon, inmygravenimage's repurpose contest is over, and I'm not aware of anything else going on.
I don't think this would seriously distract someone from a current main project.
Majority feedback by Monday morning decides if I do this or not. Your vote isn't a commitment to participate, I'm simply looking for your opinion of a contest.
Thanks for looking, and thanks for contest feedback in advance. I'll be back.
Muck looks awesome, Skalk! Fridge is coming along nicely, junk pile looks suitably junky and that pylon looks like it totally fits right in. In terms of your contest, what do you mean by, "linear?"
The definition that Dave gave a few posts up. Honestly I'd never heard the term myself. Oh these kids and their newfangledy ideas
Gah. Page flipped. Copy / paste / repost:

That makes sense. I'd be on board potentially. Seems like it wouldn't be a huge time commitment for people willing to participate. More of a fun, side job.
Judge. Which is why I'm asking. I don't want to look like I'm stealing any thunder or pulling people off other projects / contests. Especially when I haven't finished a terrain contest since July of 2012.
Hrm. I've been in a bit of a painting lull between projects. And I just realized you're using what looks like the square WHFB style bases (of which I have many, and no practical use for them ) on which to pile the stuff. Given how many bits I have and how little I actually play...
I could definitely see myself throwing something together for a sense of involvement more than competition. Would definitely be fun to watch what everyone else comes up with, so for the entertainment value alone, i say do it
I really like the sound of this contest, how long would you anticipate the entrance/build period to be? If its more than a couple of weeks, then can i join in?!
Response seems positive so far, so here's a general idea of how it would go:
- Pieces would be intentionally small. Bases would be no larger than a 40K 60mm round base, but no smaller than a WFB 40mm square base (exceptions- 25X50mm WFB calvary base, 25X70mm 40K bike base, WFB 20x80mm troop base). You do NOT have to use a GW base, I’m mentioning them only for scale ref.
- Timeframe would be 4 weeks w/ a one week 'stress extension' if absolutely necessary for extenuating circumstances, but no exceptions beyond that flex time and I would prefer to not have to use it. On average it takes (me) a few hrs to build and paint one of these. The only reason I'm going 4 weeks is because I want to make sure the latecomers have a chance to enter and finish a piece, also the opportunity to catch up for people that find IRL is suddenly affecting hobby time.
- I'm also thinking about assigning 3 classes for judging- Expert (we all know who these guys are), Normal People (ha!), and special category Lurker. Come on lurkers, I know you guys are out there. Speak up and join the fun!
Important note, no WIP pics here. My opinion is that participation drops when WIP pics are posted. That coupled w/ the 3 judging categories will (hopefully) increase participation.
So that's what I am thinking. Feedback on contest ideas?
Popped back out from the warp to check on your terrain stuff - still going well Skalk
Liking the linear terrain comp idea...may help give me a kick-start back ino my hobby stuff (although my previous track record with comps is worse than poor......)
Replies are all positive so far. Looks like I had better get working on a specific set of rules. I won't post them until Monday regardless. For you 'early birds' please don't start gluing yet, I want to see a 'starting bitz' shot. I know this project will take 5-6 hours tops but to be fair I'd like to wait until everyone is on board. It will also give me some time to specifically invite some Dakka folks that do not usually stop by here.
D'oh saw this after I posted my Epic Walls up on my blog and I'm not going to eat a whole tub of butter in a month. I'll be in will 6mm terrain be considered valid?
Gitz- Welcome aboard! It seems like this is a done deal, but again I'm going to wait until Monday because that is what I said and it also gives lurkers and occasional posters a chance to find out about this.
Llamahead- For you, yes. The vast majority of your projects are in that scale and my intent for this (aside from having fun w/ it) is to have the end result be functional for tabletop play. I will be requesting you try for a 25x50mm or 20x70mm WFB base though. I'm sure you have more than enough bitz to cover that.
tho... would someone please explain for me the qualities and quantities of a linear terrain piece...? it is a sightblocker?... how tall does it is supposed to stand? if i take your average johnny imperial...would he be able to look over it?
anyway... it is a perfect excuse to ruin my atm mint looking and sorted desk again
I am here. I will be happily joining up here. Howdy all will be a pleasure to model aside yee. I don't know what category I will be in. Throw me at your worst.

You can do any thing really a Los blocker is good and a covering ruin is also good. Have fun
Ok. Invited people from my friendfs list and from threads I sub to. Apologies if duped msgs, and please understand that if I did not invite you directly is is becasue you already post here frequently or it is a genuine oversight on my part.
I may as well just say it's on and get to work on the rules. Thank you one and all, it's inspiring to see so many people interested in this project.
I'll be back sometime this weekend. Go ahead and start digging though your bitz bin, but again PLEASE do not start gluing until the announced start date (which will likely be sometime next week).
You are all quite an awesome bunch, you know that?
I'm in, and I challenge all league members to join.
if we can't lead by example in the p&m blogs, then we shouldn't even raise the banner. In other words......"if I can't finish this on time, then i'm kicking myself out of the league" new job or not this is a small project, and should help me get back to building. Hopefully it won't take me away from painting.
@ Desubot- Open to all. Welcome aboard and thanks for posting. Your Chapter Master is awesome, but you get my highest praise for your WIP Doomrider throwing the horns!
Page flipped again. Wow.
Here's a quick repost for folks just showing up:

*edit edit again- temp change to the thread title*
All- PLEASE do not let this take time from your primary projects, ESPECIALLY if you are in the LoER contest or a paint competition or finishing up an army for a Tourney. This contest is intended to be a fun pastime as you wait for glue / paint to dry. It won't be a huge project for most of you to do on 'spare time' but I wanted to be clear on that.
I had to backburner that project till the end of this year. i needa finish my entire 5th company imp fist, and half of first company for an upcoming apoc.
So Skalk... is the lead post on this page the "official announcement"... or if I were going to re-post on my own blog... should I wait until Monday when you have all the details figured out?
It's a good time for me to sort through my 10,987 seperate little meat tray bitz boxes! I was just looking for Jake's Nuka Cola bottles and found some choice bitz I forgot I had, not to mention miniatures!
I'll just make even more garbage bags... and junk and stuff... Where do we put finished pics? And are we limited to 1 entry, or can we enter a junk table (slightly exaggerated ofcourse)
@ Biohazard... Linear terrain is a rather new term for Line-of-sight blocking, barricade or smaller sight terrain. Also known as scatter terrain or obstacle terrain...
Yeah, since this is "official" or happening or whatever, definitely count me in. I'd like to do more of these dakka challenge/competition things and this seems like a perfect place to get my feet wet.
4 weeks you say? Back in college that would mean about 4-8 hours the night before... but now that I've a little one... that means about 4 hours over the course of the month, good thing I'm not directly working on anything else too hard atm
@ Everyone- Thank you for showing such a strong interest. I am really looking forward to seeing what projects you all come up with.
@ Gitz- I had absolutely no idea the response would be so overwhelmingly positive and fast, including from people currently in the LoER contest. I sent a PM to hk1x1 and haven't heard back yet but seeing how 5 of the guys in that contest are cool w/ this I'm going to just call it official and get it rolling.
However, I'm going to say this one more time and then promise to stop.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I am honored that so many incredibly skilled people are taking an interest, but make no mistake- this is intended to be a fun 'keep your fingers busy while letting paint dry' side project. I am directly asking people with other obligations to NOT enter if there is any chance your main project will suffer from attention to this contest. Dakka is my only online hangout (I don't even have a Facebook acct) and the last thing I want here to is alienate those who would be my friends.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ok, done with that.
UPDATE- I am working on the rules right now. So long as nothing stupid happens I'll have these up by Sunday at the latest. But I can announce the contest start and finish dates:
Start- 0000 Your time zone Friday Nov 15th
End- 5pm MY time zone (EST) Friday Dec 13th
Start date is a week out because I'm hoping a few more lurkers will emerge from the darkness and join in. Plus I thought it was cool to end the contest on Friday the 13th.
Ok, enough messing around here, I have work to do. Again, HUGE thank you to all that have responded and joined. For you lurkers and new folks, there's plenty of time to join. Just post here and you're in.
I don't normally do terrain (unless its dungeons), but it sounds like this will be fun, simple and a good place to start. I will assemble a bits pile from random stuff found in long forgotten places.
I have been planning..... welll... as much planing as one can do in a hour or two but i have been planning none the less. SO. Also, no formal gluing yet or WIP pics. Arrrch. the suspense is going to kill me. Can we send you Private WIP pics.
Coolness! I shall be having a crack at this too! :-) whatever it is lol! I'm reading and can work out it needs to be on a base? check! and it needs to be a barricade made from rubble? is that right guys?
Have you got your own personal or Dakka blog? I'll probably be putting WiP stuff on my own P&M blog for anyone who wants to see it, which lets me do that without violating the rules here
Rules are not done yet, but here's an interesting bit of my past- some of my first terrain. This is from '95 or '96.
I have more pics somewhere but found these in a completely random box and was really psyched to see them. I had an eye for detail even then, and made the best of what I had available.
Ok, here are the rules. Apologies for not responding to all the individual comments. If you have a specific question that you want answered PM me and I'll post your question here with an answer.
These are the rules. After this I am going to include them with every update I post in a Spoiler so they are easy to reference.
Please be sure to read the rules. Really. Read them. It took me 3 hours to write and edit them
OFFICIAL JUNK PILE MODELING CONTEST RULES
1- Contest is open to anyone that wishes to join. Official start is Friday November 15th 0000 your time and official end is Friday December 13th @ 1800 EST. Your project must be completed and submitted for judging within the expressed time frame, there will be no extensions.
2- You are building a pile of junk out of junk parts. Must be a new project and you must provide me with one WIP picture that does not have paint. It is acceptable if a repurposed part on your model has paint from a previous project.
3- Piece must be appropriate for the W40K or WFB universe.
4- Must be on a base no larger than a 40K 60mm round base and no smaller than a WFB 40mm square base (exceptions- 25X50mm WFB cavalry base, 25X70mm 40K bike base, WFB 20x80mm troop base). See photo for reference:
You do NOT have to use a GW base, I’m mentioning them only for scale reference. You may build your own base from plasticard, hardboard, pre-fab from any manufacturer, whatever works for you. Just stay within the noted size limitations.
5- No WIP shots on this thread, and do not create direct links to your photos on this thread. Please post on your own thread or PM me w/ pics or link to pic location.
6- Submit your entry by sending me 1 'master copy' photo of your completed project for posting here, I will post your photo on Dec 13th. See additional photo requirements for the judging process at bottom section of rules.
CATAGORIES
Due to the overwhelming participation, I've created the following competition categories. I will be choosing the category for each contestant based on past endeavors and available examples of their work. I'll post a list of entrants and the category assigned before the contest starts and update it as other people join.
Categories and qualifications are as follows:
Chaos Lord- Participants in this category have displayed incredible skill and have had their work recognized elsewhere, such as GW and / or other significant contests / publications / etc.
Exalted Champion- Participants in this category have not been officially recognized as above but display extraordinary skill. This is the minimum class for any Dakka contest winner.
Aspiring Champion- Participants in this category have displayed exemplary skill in their work.
Chaos Cultists- Participants in this category display noted effort in their work.
Chaos Spawn- Participants in this category are Dakka lurkers that have come forward and joined this contest. This is the only category that is not qualified by skill, so expect some distinct variety from this gibbering horde.
The purpose of the different categories is to ensure the most fair and balanced level of competition possible. If anyone feels they should be moved from their assigned category for any reason please PM me.
Scoring
Scoring will consist of 3 categories worth a maximum of 100 points overall. The categories are:
Bitz (30)- What you choose and use to build your piece
Impression (40)- Overall impression for the model as an entirety. Does the model shows scale perspective with all materials used? Were the materials varied and diverse? Does the paint and weathering compliment and define the overall build? Does the model tell a story? Does the model fit the 40K or WFB universe? Etc.
Scoring Criteria
Add points for:
No prefab, meaning a complete build of random junk bitz. Examples are crushed sewing thimbles, mechanical pen springs, soda can tabs, cassette deck components, little broken bits of plastic, etc.
Immediate +5 point Bitz bonus for anyone that sends photographic 'as it happened' evidence of picking up a piece of random junk from a parking lot, sidewalk, dumpster, etc.
Comprehensive list of parts you used
Neutral points for:
Majority non-GW prefab bitz from old models (1/35, 1/24, etc) like military vehicles, cars, trucks, etc.
Deduct points for:
Majority GW bitz
No list of parts / bitz
Base that is outside size limitations (exceptions as noted in individual requests)
Posting WIP on this thread
Poor quality / insufficient number of photos.
Judging and Winning Entries
Each category will have a 1st and 2nd place winner. There will also be a 'popular choice' vote where your vote bestows the honored title of Primarch to the overall winner. In the case of a tie in any category I will decide on the criteria to break the tie. Primarch votes accepted from Dec 13th to Dec 26th. Contest winners will be announced on Friday Dec 27th.
First place winners of each category will be awarded a personalized piece of terrain built and painted by me. Second place winners will be awarded a bag of bitz from my bitz box. Winner of the Primarch title will receive both. If Primarch title is awarded to anyone that placed 1st or 2nd in any category will receive cumulative prizes.
IMPORTANT Be sure to provide me with FOCUSED, CLEAR, and WELL-LIT pictures for judging. Minimum number of photos I am asking for is 5 but more is better and be prepared if I request more as I may need them for a tie-breaker or other decision.
If you do not have a device that can take a clean and clear photo, please consider getting assistance from a friend / family member, etc. It is not my intent to penalize anyone based on available technology or ability to use it but understand I will have to judge your piece by the pictures you provide.
And there I thought I already had a clever plan...I need to seriously rethink my concepts. This is one help of A list of very thought out rules and deserve an entry likewise planned and thought out.
Sheeesh...me ol brain is going to hurt...damn schoollife...I'd rather be at home now, doing a dive into my junk/bitzbox...
Will you place us into the categories or do we list ourselves? I am game for both...
Multiple entries- I believe I told Vik 'yes' but I'm going to officially say 'no' unless a new entry by same person / same class is submitted to supersede the original piece.
Chaos Spawn- Thank you for notifying me of the oversight. I will fix that this morning.
One piece, please. But certainly feel free to make a bunch and choose your favorite / best one from the batch. You'll have a great contest entry and you'll have a lot of new and functional terrain for your table.

**********************************************
I am having a very difficult time with categorizing contestants. Some are less difficult than others based on past work / contests / etc. Others are not as easy.
I am requesting contestants self-assign their category. If I feel that someone is significantly downgrading themselves (such as Gitz trying to join Chaos Spawn) then we'll discuss via PM.
Looking forward to this skalk. I plan on using recycled GW sprue as part of my diorama. Does this count as neutral with regards to the rules of the contest?
Cant wait to get started Skalk. Sometime after the 16th i will begin posting some updates on my blog.
@ Vik / Theo- It'll be easy. I have a 'behind the scenes' panel of judges at my disposal, two of whom have never been to Dakka and do not model or play.
@ sennacherib- Yes, neutral. There are so many bitz and so many questions that will come. If anyone has questions please post and eventually I'll compile into a Q&A list
i would rather not evaluate my own category belongings...just put me where you deem fit...regardless if the comp then gets harder or not... i do it for the fun of it anyway...
Viks a ringer, he won with his cool DakkaJet. Just don't put me up against dave I know he has scraps of brick walls from his FO terrain. But anywhere you put me is good, I'll have a tough fight against all this awesome. I just really like the no pics in this thread rule , I've been deflated enough....still fat, but deflated
Im really glad to see such a large amount of interest in this contest, cant wait to get stuck in.
With regard to grouping, im a bit unsure and am struggling to know if i fit better into aspiring champ or Exalted Champ. Its likely not many people on here have seen my work (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/418405.page), but im happy to go into either category.
Got ideas floating around already, and ill be on the look out for suitable random objects to incorporate into my entry, while wandering around Leeds all week for work!
p.s. when you put up the final competition photos, it might be fun to see a spoilered WiP too! Ignore me if it's too much work at the end of the day, but it's always fun to see what something started off as with this kind of junk terrain
I guess put me down for cultist. I post on dakka all the time so lurker seems out, though I definitely don't feel I've done anything "exemplary". Feel free to modify at a whim
I guess cultist, I can paint OK, especially if I take my time on a single piece. I'm gonna get curb stomped, but I'd rather be in a higher bracket for motivational purposes
So the only restriction on size is the base right? Preferably no spilling over beyond a reasonable degree? Is height pretty open then? Obviously nothing a foot tall is likely to sit on one of those sized bases and be stable, but just making sure I can work vertically if I want
@ Theophony- I have to disagree. I'm going to recommend Exalted Champion, but if you strongly reject the assignment I will reconsider.
@ graven- Aspiring Champion it is, but you have the opportunity to step up if you choose.
@ Galorn- Aspiring Champion at minimum. You've displayed considerable skill with your casts.
@ Dr H- Exalted Champion it is.
@ Chelnov- I'll offer you Spawn if you'll accept. 87 posts in 15 months = lurker to me.
@ scrunty- I've looked at your work, and you definitely qualify for Exalted Champion.
@ Moltar- I have, and he will. Also, would like you to consider Exalted.
@ Scarper- Good idea. Also, Aspiring Champion if you do not object.
@ GrimDork- I've seen your work and you have distinct vision for taking random junk and turning it into terrain. I'll allow the Cultists as I've already let Vik and RSJake join that category. You'll be in good company and should have a genuine competition.
@ monkeytroll- Yeah, you're going Exalted.
@ Vik- I want it to be fun, not stressful.
@ whalemusic- Cultists, but only for your assertion that you haven't painted in over a year.
From the work I have already seen most of you will be Aspiring or Exalted Champions. Each category will have varying degrees of skill but I do not think there will be a significant difference from contestant to contestant. For what it is worth, I would classify myself as an Aspiring Champion. There are a lot of contestants participating that I feel are better modelers than me but I would still share the same category with them.
I'm also offering the literal definitions of the words I used to qualify the standard of each category for clarification and explanation. Take a look at them and honestly consider how it applies to your work.
Chaos Lord- Participants in this category have displayed incredible skill
Exalted Champion- Participants in this category have displayed extraordinary skill
Aspiring Champion- Participants in this category have displayed exemplary skill
I hope this helps.
Finally, here's spoilers for rules and current contestants.

Due to the overwhelming participation, I've created the following competition categories. I am requesting each contestant choose the catagory appropriate for their skill level. If the level chosen appears to be below contestant's capabilities based on examples of past wrok I will request they move to a higher catagory. If a participant is unsure of what category to join I will assign one for them.

And remember, if you know someone that would enjoy a contest like this please let them know about what we have going on here.
Also, if you find inconsistencies in the rules, omissions from contestant listing, etc PLEASE let me know so i can make the appropriate corrections.
I'll happily occupy whichever tier you are most comfortable placing me in, though, I believe you do me too much credit I don't foresee being top of any tier and it matters not to me which tier I'm in the middle of
I'll ask again (since I double checked the rules and haven't seen anything saying otherwise) as long as it's relatively stable on one of the chosen base sizes, height is not a limiting factor?
Exalted is fine, glad ou have a better impression of m than I do , I'll try not to disappoint you too much. I have a couple ideas rattling around in my head. Is it okay to use models purchased, or supplied by vendors as the main part of this? I'll junk up around it but I think I have stuff from two other contestants that might make appearances.
I think exalted or aspiring. I paint well but I've never made plastic junk terrain before. Its all new to me, the only serious terrain I've done is milliput dungeon furniture:
You can throw me in the exalted category skalk, I'm looking forward to the challenge! As a favored son of chaos, I'll pray to the gods to aid me in creating little piles of chaos.
I feel kinda stupid asking for clarification on this but, what are we making exactly? :-)
is it some drop down barricade/los blocker made from majority non gaming bits to use in game? and does it need to be ruined per se or can it be intact but still usable as a barricade?
I'm just asking so i can start working out what I can create from things i find etc. and so i'll have a clear view of what i need to make to do something that looks cool! :-)
Well now this looks to be an interesting contest and right down my ally time wise and size wise ..looks like lots of entrants ..looks like a lot of FUN to be had ..and gives me a reason to start a P & M Blog of my own
That's a lot of people competing, cant wait to see what everyone comes up with.
Not sure what level I'd put myself at, as my modeling skill's aren't too bad, but my painting's not great.
So just put me in whichever category you think best, you've seen my work, so I'll let you decide .
I'm so jacked for this that I started building terrain just to get the juices flowing. Special piece on my blog page 98. It's a challenge for you guys to bring your "A game". Not the most spectacular thing, but I hope it motivates you. By the way it's not my entry
I'm kind of with Damo... are we supposed to be making something that looks like a pile of debris, or making something that actually is made of real debris?
@ everyone- I want to thank everyone for working w/ me and volunteering categories.
@ GrimDork- Stick w/ Cultists. I think with some practice your work is going to improve, especially since you're being exposed to some of the best modelers I've seen on Dakka. Height is is not a factor so long as it can stand on the base.
@ Theo- Materials are outlined in the rules. You may use anything you like. I'd like to see models made from genuine junk like broken buttons and crushed bottle caps but n the end it is on your model and will be on your game table.
@ Camkierhi- Cultists? Really? I'm going to have to say NO. Aspiring Champion at minimum. Your Shrine placed as a contender in a LoER contest and with your overall skills could push yourself if you joined the Exalted category.
@ graven- Thank you.
@ Chelnov- You are welcome to join any rank you wish, but you qualify for Spawn based on my observation that you're a low post count and I cannot remember ever seeing you around.
@ MauS- Exalted.
@ weety- Aspiring please. I took a look at your scratch build milliput and it is impressive. And while do not post there very often I am very familiar with your 2nd Ed miniature work.
@ Dave- Agreed. Also, welcome to Exalted but you're #1 on the Lord list if I have to bump someone up.
@ Sanka- Aspiring Champion it is. You'll be offering some tough competition.
@ Gits- You sould have been in that category anyway. I would have been really disappointed if you went w/ Aspiring Champion.
@ Nerdfest x2- I'm requesting that you compete in the Lord. category. I do not know if you've ever been officially recognized through a contest outside Dakka but your work is very high quality and I'd like to see you compete at the highest level here.
You are making a pile of junk, preferable out of random stuff you might pick up on a sidewalk near a roadway or a parking lot or taken from your neighbor's recycle bin. 1:1 scale junk turned into 28mm Heroic Scale junk. It can be intact as a barricade if you wish, it is your model and it is your table.
@ Desubot- Cultists is fine but feel free to step up to Aspiring Champion if you'd like to push your abilities.
@ Master Azalle- Welcome aboard. Feel free to join the Spawn or Cultists category. Let me know which please.
@ Morfydd- Welcome. Feel free to choose Spawn or Cultists and let me know which.
@ hk1x1- I'd really like to see you in the Exalted category. Your skill is unquestionable and you won the last LoER contest
@ Gits- You are making a pile of junk / debris. One thing I am looking for (though not required) is to have the junk made of junk. See my reply to Nerdfest if you missed it. Bottom line is that it is your model and going on your table so build it out of anything you like. I'm merely expressing ideas for the composition of the model, and am hoping people can find creative ways to not use a lot of GW or other prefab items.
@ daemonhunter187- Hey, glad to see you made it! Your trench terrain is really pushing me to the edge... if I start up a trench project I am so blaming you. Also, I think Aspiring Champion is where I think you belong.
I started writing this at 10:30 this morning between stuff at work so if there are omissions or weird edits please let me know. I'm making the most of the down time I have but today was not a great day for that (9.5 hrs later for 1 post, ha)
My next task here is to compile a list of contestants and their categories so I can update the contestant list so we'll all have an idea of who is competing against who. If anyone would like to take on that task and PM me or post it here I would be grateful.
Guess I had better come clean, since someone is bound to point it out sooner or later. I think I had better go Exalted, since I have won 2 comps and placed in 3 others, though my last couple failed dismally.
Not that I think I am up to that standard by a long ways.
Id like someone to volunteer themselves to place me in a category. .. im not a very active dakka member but I think I got skills and I have won a comp on here...
Camkierhi- Thanks for stepping up. I didn't know all of that, but you're right that someone would have
ashotninja- Oh wow. Yeah, you're in. I'd like to see you in the Lord category. Anything less and you'll be selling yourself very short. Your work is really good.
IMPORTANT Category update- due to having been shown thew error of my logic 3 times now I have decided to remove the Chaos Spawn category completely. The last 2 people that have PM'd me have turned out to be highly skilled and while I thought having a Spawn category would bring people out of the dark it's obvious that this contest in itself is doing that and people should be competing against their peers of similar skill.
Everyone that was previously in the Spawn category please pick a new category. If you are unsure and have examples of your work available I will help you choose appropriately.
Well you can place me in Lord category then, If there is a golden daemon level painter that blows me away, so be it! So I am wondering who I will be competing against there...?
A few guys so far, and I think you'll stand pretty well with anyone that is in that category. I'm not asking you to compete there out of random happenstance.
I do have one question, sorry, Green stuff? Can we use it, I know it can not count as junk, but honest I just found 5 ft of the stuff lying around in the bin outside!!!!!
Camkierhi wrote: I do have one question, sorry, Green stuff? Can we use it, I know it can not count as junk, but honest I just found 5 ft of the stuff lying around in the bin outside!!!!!
But really, is it ok or frowned upon.
To add. what about pure plasticard? or sculpting your own junk? (can a piece be entirely scratch built?)
Well... it's not easy to tell which category I should join...As many other contestants I can't choose between "aspiring" and "exalted" (there is a gap between my modelling and my painting skills).
@ Camkierhi and Desubot- - Yes to both. Use whatever you wish. The spirit of the contest is random junk from the gutter or driveway but in the end it is your model on your table.
@ MauS- Done.
@ Bruticus- Thanks for joining! Hoping to see you in the Lord category. Also took your recommendation and emailed Admin for a pin..
@ Brian- Exalted at least.
@ Gits- You made me literally lol at work. And it's still funny.
@ Joe- Go for Exalted. The paint is not Golden Daemon fades and highlights, it is gritty brown and chunky rust.
@ Ferret- Glad to see you joining. Competition just stepped up again. I'd like to see you in the Exalted at least and please consider Lord. You most recent work is staggering.
@ hk1x1- You'll be in a tough category and I think the motivation will push you to your best.
@ Master Azalle- Cultists it is.
@ Lord Nerdfest- That's a befitting title... let's see if you can keep it.
Work is very busy today so I'll keep up as I can. I have some time blocked tonight hopefully starting around 10pm-ish -11pm EST and I'll do some cleanup on the rules and post a list of of current contestants and the category they are competing in.
UPDATE- FEEDBACK REQUESTED

Subject: Re:Front page pin request
If you could consolidate the contest information into a single new thread in the main P&M forum, that should be sufficient to qualify for us to promote it on the homepage.
Thanks for your motivation! Look forward to seeing what comes of this
What do you all think? Is it worth starting over on a new thread?
Well, i can see you getting them pages filled up like there is no tomorrow...
But I think for such a vast slice of dakka joining that comp it is I wise decision to make a separate thread...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Had another thought... With all these comps zinging around the ether atm...maybe legoburner should think of A whole section for comps?
Viktor von Domm wrote: Had another thought... With all these comps zinging around the ether atm...maybe legoburner should think of A whole section for comps?
2nd vote for separate thread. And you can msg legoburner.
I think another blog would be alright, especially if it gets more contestants. Not that we don't have enough for a gaggle right now, but a google would be EPIC.
And Gits I agree but I'd still rather no WIP (or early finishers) to not scare anyone new away. The 4 categories for different skill levels will mitigate that to an extent. Plus I'll be inviting more people directly so participation shouldn't be an issue.
Also for everyone I'm subbed to- I might not be visiting your thread again until the startup for this contest is ready and running. Just wanted to say that for some reason.
Not taken that way at all. I completely agree that things will quiet down a bit for a while. I expect there to be at least some daily banter, and if necessary I'll post a daily inspirational quote such as
Training Manual, Penal Legion, Suicide Bomb Squads wrote:Statistically, you will almost certainly die when assaulting a well-maintained fortress with a competent commander
or
Commissar Groden Bevro wrote:Blessed is the mind too small for doubt.
Ahh, the Imperium. An entire society built around suicide and stupidity.
5 up. Guessing if I have 5 in a row most other people will be ok w/ it. I'll create new thread tonight.
Also, if anyone can help me by compiling current contestants w/ assigned categories from the last few pages of this thread and PM / post here it will save me some time tonight.
I'm off to work shortly myself and tomorrow have meetings and uh, but might be able to compile on Friday. I say everyone involved must post in the thread a progress update weekly. No WIP pics, or anything along those lines just little FYI like "parts collected and dry fit, or primered and waiting painting, or painted and ready for judging, or I'm so far behind" this may help with keeping people on track. Also if ou wanted here could be a nominal point deduction for no updates, which might help break ties at the end. Just a suggestion.
Seems like a new thread would make it easier to follow, and to retroactively update the front page with winners etc... without hijacking your own lovely thread further. Sounds like a good idea in that case.
Put me down for whatever you see fit, exalted and above sounds like thats where the competition is at.
Question: Is it ok to use parts from previous projects that didn't work out right and/or were junked? Only i've got a fair few bits lying around that are only suitable for basing or throwing.
Phew, I just got back from the States and remembered your PM Stalky so here I am!
I should probably be able to whip a base up soonish. Unfortunately you caught me at a bad time what with midterms, finals and a heap of projects so I'll probably end up starting it around the 10th of December or something..
Would I be able to add a broken down drone to the base or would that be considered as a miniature if I made it the focal point of the scene?
EDIT: Oh, and for ranking, I dunno. I would probably place myself as an Aspiring Champion? While I can pull off some awesome stuff from time to time my general ability is somewhat lacking due to my tendency to rush stuff.
New thread coming. Before I post it, please check this list. If you're not on it or in the wrong category, please tell me. Also, if you are lurking and on the fence, now's the time to speak up.
Ok folks, here's the link to the official thread, UPDATED rules (that means re-read them), and has as much of a complete list of participants and category that I have available. I have also sent a PM to legoburner requesting front page exposure.
This terrain thread is no longer the gathering point for the contest. It's been quite overwhelmed with activity. 6 pages in 5 days vs. 6 prior pages in 7 months. Granted I was away for an extended period, but that's still a huge difference.
I expect things will quiet down soon and I'll be getting back to my little hunks of junk. I'll share what I have as the opportunity arises.
See you all on the contest thread. Thank you so much for being part of this.
@ Strombones- Added as Exalted. Thanks for joining!
@ everyone- That's it, clear off. Out you go. Yes, the lot of you.
I'm going to compile these pictures and post them on the contest thread, but felt like putting them here first since this is my 'real' thread.
I've been getting a lot of questions about what is 'junk', what should it look like, etc. My response has been to build the model they want on their table. Not the answer they are looking for apparently. Tonight I decided to show them exactly what I mean. The following took 25 minutes from junk to model:
25 minutes. All I'm waiting for now is the glue to dry. I'll let it set until tomorrow just to make sure it's done.
I think I'll do this for all the junk heaps I'm going to offer as prizes. I'm going to make one about twice the size for the 'peoples choice' overall winner.
If you are reading this are are not aware of the contest, click the junk pile contest tag in my sig. Contest ends Friday Dec 13th.
Ahh, cool beans Skalk. I feel a lot better about mashing all of my bits together with hot glue instead of meticulously placing everything now I think I'm gonna have to do a regular old pile like the one you've shown above, just for fun. My entry is a bit different in shape, and a nice pile like that looks pretty fun
MauS wrote: Shouldn't Mr. Steingass be in Overlord?
me? I don't really care. I'm not much of a competitor. I build models that I want. No matter how many pics I post for you guys to see, I'm the one that has to look at my shelves and tables. But I'm honored that you think so Maus!
@ Grim- I was going to use a hot glue gun tonight since the plastics are made of different materials and do not always stick well, but I decided against it. not sure why, I just didn't. Buit it is a valuable resource for things like this as it can fill in the 'dark underside' gaps between materials.
@ Dave- Hi!
@ Camkierhi- Thank you for the title, but I'll decline. I'm plain ol' Skalk Bloodaxe. If I start collecting titles I might start to believe my own press releases.
MauS wrote: Shouldn't Mr. Steingass be in Overlord?

Well, seeing as you, in my humble opinion, are probably the best terrain artist here, its not an honour... its a curse
Moltar wrote: I clearly need more junk. I guess my busted white out roller and a broken VHS tape won't cut it. A-scavenging I will go.
You have an entire VCR? Oh man. You have WAY enough junk to make a junk pile. Take a screwdriver and some pliers to it and you'll quickly find that the parts are more than enough to make an awesome pile of junk. nd if you need some bulk in the center, take said hammer and bust up a few larger chunks.
I'm not giving you 'insider information'. Anyone can read this thread and from the beginning it has been all about sharing ideas and techniques.
The battery will likely leak over time... I am clueless as to what could possible seal that enough... Alkaline will do all sorts of nasty shizzle to yer health too... Wouldn't want you to become Skalk Sick-axe
@ both- Agreed. I rec'd a couple PMs regarding the battery as well as your post. It'll be coming out tonight. I wouldn't give it much mind if I were going to keep the piece for myself, but ceding to the concerns of others I am making the responsible decision.
This is in response to a requests I've had from a couple Cultists and to keep things fair and neutral I'm posting it on my Terrain thread. It's relevant enough to be included here as a small tut (or at least an opinion). I don't have time to post example pics but the text should be enough to help people take the next step.
RUST
Rust is easier than you might think, and there are a number of ways to do it. I won't do *all* the legwork, but here's a few ideas to consider and investigate:
Salting- By far the most popular and effective method I've used. It is very realistic as the rust comes from underneath, not layered on top of the metal. Check YouTube for salting videos, you'll find a lot of them.
Baking Soda- a bit more tough to work with but the results are decent. It gives a 'bloating with decay' look to the metal. My favorite recipe for powder is to apply liquid superglue to certain areas that look like the metal would separate and bloat (such as edges and some surfaces of metal), sprinkle baking soda on the glue, let completely dry, brush off the loose baking soda that didn't stick, prime and paint. You'll be dabbing rust on the baking soda in this application, it won't be 'rust from beneath' but it still looks really good.
I've also started to use a different method where I prime my piece (rust or black, doesn't matter) sprinkle baking soda in the same areas that look like the metal would separate and bloat (such as edges and some surfaces of metal), let dry 'as is', later spray matte sealer over entire model (it soaks into the baking soda and makes it hard as a rock). In both applications you can also move on to the salt method.
Brushing- Not an application I use all the time I found it has worked well for me in certain situations. When I use this method it is almost always in conjunction with either (or both) of the methods above. I prime my model with a rust base (I prefer to use spray paint) and once completely dry I spray at least 3 coats of matte sealer (being sure that each application completely dries first). If I'm going to use any other technique on the model as well as brushing this is when I do it. Once the other methods are complete and I've gotten to the point where I have most of my 'final paint' done I use a small steel brush (looks like a toothbrush, available in most hardware stores) and lightly scrub over flat surfaces and sometimes edges of metal (but rarely over any baking soda as it can chip off). The light scrubbing removes the top layer of paint to expose the base beneath, but the matte sealer helps to prevent scrubbing through the base color down to the plastic.
Dry brushing- While tis method can pick out edges quite nicely I don't like to use it very often. I reserve it as a last resort for those times when I'm completely sick of working on a model and the options left are dry brush and be done with it or grab my 10 lb hammer and smash the model into atomic particles. With few exceptions I've chosen dry brushing. If you go with this method I'd recommend a bright color first (orange is my favorite) and brush over it with a darker color, gives a 'subdued reveal' look.
These are not the only methods available by far they are just the ones I use. There are many resources available online (Dakka and YouTube being a great places to start).
while i used superglue and soda already together i haven´t yet thought about that in terms of achieving a corroded effect on surfaces... i think i will try that...i still haven´t had the guts tho to try the salting methode... somthing in my weird mind tells me i will screw it^^
@ Vik- try it on a few sacrificial pieces. My first few were on blocks of wood, and you know that even a 'nightmare' of a mistake can be turned into something awesome.
But do try it on a few things you won't miss, like even a soup can.
I personally have had much success with the superglue and bicarb approach, I feel it gives a nice texture. Many people are better than me at these techniques though.

I can now see Viks wife open the cupboard and finding that vik has pulled all the labels off the canned goods and has experimented with the technique. "It's okay honey, I color coded the cans by flavor"
