Brian, I am not even being silly about noise marines that play "Down with the sickness" and I truly believe those caps are gonna be awesome somewhere on one of my warlords..... Silver, I NEVER plan anything.... I have built very detailed warhounds in under two weeks with no plans and not really knowing what I was doing having worked eight hours a day and I am taking thirty days leave soon..... A warlord may fill some empty time in my schedule after the mass build is done...... Hopefully before the end of the first week of May....... Rogue, sic balls, boy...... Sit, booboo, sit. Good dog...... Automatically Appended Next Post: But enough of that gak.... Onto the update. this is a very intense riveting job.... Ok, so the port front side and the canopy are all I have energy for for now. It will be riveted by the end of this week and then the final details will go on. Have to finish the remodel of the interior and the flight stand plus some other minor stuff. Maybe done before the end of the week. Have decided that I am not going to put extended landing gear on it. I do not believe with it's weight and the length they would require that they can be made in any kind of sturdy enough fashion to warrant wasting the effort, materials and time on. The will be modeled as if the are retracted and the flight stand will be able to sit at 1 inch or twelve inches off the table. Or does it need to be higher? Thoughts? C&C, please..... Automatically Appended Next Post: No, spankers, I DO NOT know how many rivets there are already. Nor will I have a count when it is completed. Sorry if that seems harsh but my sons have collectively waged war on my sanity trying to get me to count them. Automatically Appended Next Post: Any takers on which one of them ends up punished with having to count the rivets??? They are 13, 16 and 18. My odds are on the 16 year old..... Gentlemen, place your bets.....

can anyone say Squiggoth?

Thanks all. I hate carrots. I don't mind a whipping on occasion..... And, yes, they are from the kids milk bottle but you can buy the milk bottles seperatley. No Happy meals for you, Black...... LOL I personally had no problem whatsoever going to McD's and buying a half dozen bottles of milk, Drinking them all and then taking my Lactose intolerant butt to Friday Night Magic... If you can't win with force, gas your opponents out I say...... Photobucket apparantly has fixed themselves, as I haven't had a problem...... And I have thousands of images up there. The Damned Articifer gets his scratch builds on the front page, Mine never show up.... I am considering moving the whole fam damily of photos to the Gallery. Yes, eternity.... That's how long things with rivets last..... Incidentally, that's how long it takes to put them on, it seems.... And that ^^ is called a Fast. It was a free giveaway when you bought the 2008 Volkswagon GTI..... You can get them on Ebay for about 20 to 40 bucks and they are the size of a softball........... Back to the rivet bench.......... The very reason that makes this construct so popular and praiseworthy is the attention to detail. Rushing will only spoil the result. There are plenty of threads that while well executed are none the less secondary to the finished product and the implementation of it. Let those that are in a rush lavish kudos and "hurry up and finish" remarks on these threads and allow the artistic temperament the luxury of proceeding at it's own pace.

from my understanding Bitz = pieces of models that are extra or from another kit that are "necessary" (arms, torsos, guns etc) Gubbinz = Any extraneous thing that has a primarily decorative or aesthetic purpose. (pouches, random dangly bit, etc) Black a stompa to your standard would be both epic and in all probability truly bizarre as Orks have no standards for their construction other than bolted/welded on. with extra Glyphs... Ork Technology works because they believe it should irrespective of ANY other factor. (this includes Thermodynamics, and basic Physics)

just make sure that the needle is very thin and sharp like a jalapeno...otherwise the rivet might fall off too early... you have to puncture it and then dip it...
as i mostly done the cardboard riveting i can say this worked with a thicker needle too...but the way thicker PC/styrene is either best tackeld with a sharp point of a fresh xacto knife or a needle as described...

An entire page devoted to rivets is quite enough; my email notification is overflowing. Let me try to put this speculation to bed. I'll attempt to explain how I make and install rivets that is a procedure that is quick and efficient: you don't need special pick up tools just the #11 Xacto blade and handle. Take a rod of styrene of the desired rivet diameter and with a NEW #11 Xacto blade http://web4.hobbylinc.com/gr/xac/xacx611.jpg mounted in it's handle dice off a couple of dozen slices about a half a mm thick. so they look like tiny tuna tins i.e. short cylinders. Don't worry about variations in height we'll address that later. Using the # 11 blade gently stick the blade tip into the top of the tiny cylinder. You're not skewering a goat so you need only touch the tip to the top of the rivet to pick it up, they don't weigh nothin'! It should be here that I point out that if you make the rivet too tall it will lie on it's side and be difficult to pick up with the blade tip because it will keep falling over. Now that you have the rivet skewered by the blade dip it into a small puddle of: Tamiya Thin Set plastic cement http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tam/tam87038.htm or Ambroid ProWeld plastic weld http://mfpilot.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=40_66&products_id=68 or Testors plastic solvent, http://www.hobbylinc.com/htm/tes/tes3502.htm Testors is the weakest of these three whereas Ambroid and Tamiya are on a par. There is a few really high potency solvents on the market but I have never used them they evaporate too fast. There are half a dozen manufacturers but you want the stuff that doesn't evaporate too quickly. I have also used old solvent that has lost a bit of it's volatiles so the little puddle stays around for a bit. The beauty of using these solvents is there is virtually no surface tension so the rivet isn't dragged off the blade tip when you exit the puddle. and transfer the rivet (still on the tip of the knife) to the area you want to install it on. Gently touch the rivet to the surface and maintain the slight pressure for a few seconds until the rivet stays on the surface as you remove the knife blade. Do this until you have a good row of rivets set and dry and then with a fine file or as I use a steel fingernail board dress the rivets down to the required height. Do this for as long as you have the endurance and eventually you will have a model studded with rivets as mxwllmdr's excellent T'hawk displayed so many pages ago.

Since I've blown the entire morning reading and answering posts instead of working on my projects I may as well compound the felony by addressing the subject of cutting boards.
This mind you is what works for me and I cast no aspersions on methods of other hobbyists but it seems to me that these self healing foam mats with the surface marked off in square cm or inches that are being used are an unnecessary expense and too soft for cutting fine items such as the afore mentioned rivets.
I use an old kitchen hardwood cutting board that my wife discarded years ago. The surface is scarred and I have accidentally drilled holes in it over the years some of which come in handy for anchoring bits of plastic but it's hard enough that the work doesn't sink into a dimple when you bear down to cut.
Lately I have taken to using a hard white nylon cutting board that has a slightly textured surface. It has some advantages and disadvantages. One is that it is not warped and seems impervious to knife cuts and saw cuts (within reason of course). THE disadvantage is my tired old eyes can't see the rivets on the white surface easily so its back to the wood board for that work.

ONE page is enough?? LOL You are definately nOT subbed to the other -=]_,=- threads then!
Plastruct Plastic Weld is another brand, but I find it soo thin that the rivets are not as durable to handling as with Testors blue.

Testors Blue isn't that the child safe (non-sniffing) thick glue? I use that and/or the adult red (high inducing) (God how close do you have to get to the stuff to be affected by the fumes??????????) for gluing large surfaces together where capillary action isn't sufficient penetration but isn't it quite messy and too slow drying for rivet work? I used my method for Lucie and have never lost a rivet even when filing them.

that´s saying something alright...
God how close do you have to get to the stuff to be affected by the fumes??????????)
aren´t you americans famous for sueing even cofeey shops for having cups of coffey that were previously not labeld hot coffey? i mean... american companies get extra careful with such advices... in fact here in europe we sometimes make fun of these things... sometimes even things like children sweets would be difficult to handle for americans it seems...case in point : kinder eggs...
at blackadder still... i like how you use handy and usual kitchen stuff... sometimes it is nice to see someone that hasn´t gone all hightech for his hobby... the self healing cutting mats for instance sound like a charm... but i also use from a recent aborted project of mine some old and rather wasted looking MDF plates... i ruined them with PVA and insulation foam... but then i felt that the project didn´t work out as planned so i took the foam off...essentialy ruining the boards...so now they are used till they perrish as heavy duty cutting boards...
ar dave... ONE page is enough?? LOL You are definately nOT subbed to the other -=]_,=- threads then!
methinks too

Regarding the afore mentioned plastic solvents, While I prefer the Ambroid ProWeld I find the brush too big for small work and you waste a lot of expensive solvent through evaporation. Likewise the Testors applicator brush. Get yourself at least one bottle of Tamiya because of the very fine brush which incidentally telescopes to the bottom of the jar; very handy when the bottle empties. and the square bottle is less prone to tipping as with the Testors and the very prone to tipping ProWeld. Another trick when you are running low on solvent is to drop glass marbles into the jar to raise the fluid level. Automatically Appended Next Post: My biggest laugh comes from product recall where an item is withdrawn from the shelf because it contains parts small enough to swallow. Aren't these kids ever let outdoors. The world is full of parts small enough to swallow.

LOL...yep... nature...be careful where you step...and mind you...my kids used to chew acorns at the playground...and even cig stumps... but not even once did theyy swallow anything... (mind you my older son is very experimenting...)
and that trick with the glass marbels... as mentioned above... i used washes before... just take this warning... never use anything made of zinc, copper or for that matter plumb... it will ruin your paints... white specially looks rather awfullafterwards... sometimes my own dumbness ranges into the extraordinary as well...(as compared to my love for riveting...^^) Automatically Appended Next Post: mxwllmdr wrote:I love those eggs. Post by: AnUnearthlyChilde
Ottoman's. Yeah he was the only person/ruler to successfully defend against their empire. He wasn't the flavour of the time for them... as much as he was a dictator, he was also well loved, and an extremely intelligent man.
Also, did you know that his nicname, Draculya, means "son of the dragon" in reference to his father having been part of the order of the dragon, a knightly order set up by the holy roman emperor of the time...
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
yep i knew of that meaning of his name...
well... to do all those impalings as a form of psychological warfare you have to be a bit inteligent...because lets face it, coming up with something above just bashing skulls in is inteligent... so to get inside your enemies head by means of stakes (lol) is quite a bright idea!

I love the story of him dining outside the castle walls to show his enemies he had no fear, when he hears a servant complain of the smell emenating from the corpses on the steaks... so he orders his death and imediate impaling while he eats...

Cut a big hole in the tank for the stand, thread the stand through the tank hole, and make it look like a massive plume of smoke the thunderhawk is flying over. Add some flickering LED's in the smoke, and it will look badass.

Cut a big hole in the tank for the stand, thread the stand through the tank hole, and make it look like a massive plume of smoke the thunderhawk is flying over. Add some flickering LED's in the smoke, and it will look badass.
DUDE!!! :O
That idea sounds awesome! You can't bail that now you just have to do it!
also... Max, Don't get me wrong.. But I think it would better if you angled it up abit.. Right now it looks like it's going down :/
But then again.. that's just imo. Other than that it looks just great!

No I agree. I think that would be cool. I Really haven't finished the idea for this stand though. I plan on adding trimming and rivets and was gonna have it sit on a fiberboard oval.

I drive a Jeep, my MPG indicates that it has the aerodynamics of a brick. I like that stand. Different that I normally see. Painting it black? With it have a scenic base added as well?

Jeep-drivers don't need aerodynamics, we have the cool-factor on our sides!

The bench for the lower deck isn't shown. It isn't glued in yet and won't stay unless I tack it into place. All the seats will hold seated models including the two seat bench in the cabin for the Pilot/Copilot. all the interior panels are not glued in yet so they can be painted and then installed. It should allow for a nice viewable interior that is more fully painted. Good luck, Horst.....
OK. Been a while coming. I think that other projects are screaming my name now. I hope that you all have enjoyed this. I know I have. In fact, it has been a long tome since I enjoyed something not my family this much. I think I will keep doing this kind of stuff for a while. It passes the time and relaxes me....

Thank you, Genom. Have you been around long? I don't recall you posting before. I do intend on posting a tut for this soon, incidentally. It will be included in the Mass build project that begins.... Three weeks ago... LOL...... That project includes 11 warhounds (or more, depending on how I feel about them), two or three Reaver Titans, and another Thunderhawk. All of it will be posted as it is done with a lot of photos explaining how it is done. Also, I am writing an article on scratch building in general. I hoping to include a lot of information in general about hows and whys and design and so forth...... It is going to be a collective effort, really, on the part of the League of Extraordinary Riveters....... Thanks again and stick around. It can only get better.......

Oi! Whilst I can't deny this is truly awesome and possibly the coolest thing on Dakka at the moment (let you all argue about that one) - aren't you gonna drill out the barrels on the bolters? Sorry to pick - the rest is amazing work 10/10 ( PS. Did we get a final count on those rivets or did I miss that bit?)

Post by: mxwllmdr
You missed that bit. 1335 rivets all told. Not counting the 122 on the stand.......
Silverhayabusa won with a guess of 1238......
No, not drilling them out. I suck at drilling out barrels....
Horst can do it if he wants it done. Some people don't like to have the barrels drilled out.....
But since you mentioned the guns, I just remember that I forgot to tack the armor plates onto them for them photo walk around.....

the flightstand looks very cool...a true hommage to riveting if i may be so bolt (pun intended...)
