It's funny. When I was still on the server, Me, Sky-Slasher and Frostoman all trekked to a mushroom island and I, having found it on a biome mapper (AMIDST), declared myself mayor, giving my friends similarly silly titles (head of the secret police was in there).

Mel said it wasn't fair to have one person be mayor and took the title off me.

Then I realized that she's done something similar: had an idea and made it a reality, then claiming the end results.

There are at least 15 Mushroom Biomes on the server. In that direction alone. There are plenty more. I agree it's not exactly the same thing, and I know it's too late to do anything about it, but that was my realisation.

That'd be my road, and Ive got no problems with you extending it as long as you keep the same style and don't go through Helsreach. I suggest going left over the swamp biome and then continue on to your place (turning right at some point to connect your place)

Currently you can only carry a maximum of 36 signs at a time (assuming you don't even want to carry a sword or anything else). This is less than a single stack of most blocks. Usually you actually want to carry other things in your inventory too, so this number is often much less. If you're making a mob spawner (signs can be used to block water/lava while allowing mobs to pass without slowing/reversing like they do on ladders) or if you just like to label all the things, it gets rather cumbersome.

Now you can carry up to 576 signs at once.

And for simple storage of signs, I had a lot left over from making my mob spawner, they take up almost a full best themselves...

Not to mention decoration for more compact furniture; I guess. I don't really use signs much.

inverted stairs have been in the game for a bit so yes you could make a nice looking invered tower or house. they are also good for arches and tunnels/tubes/pipes.

I'm trying to avoid people "helping" on the server, because I build it using minecraftstructureplanner and if one person does the math wrong i'll end up building up like 10 levels before catching it O_o

It apparently starts out terrible, but once it gets up to 100% heat, it's the fastest furnace in the game. You just have to have it going absolutely constantly.

Redstone circuit, with some solar flowers or a geothermal generator. you wont be able to keep up with it.

I have a geothermal generator hooked up a lava lake in the nether, but no matter what I do I can't get enough damn materials to keep it at temperature for very long.

Are you folks playing on a single server? And how can I join?

I've just got back into the Technic pack- I think I'm going to focus on Railcraft and Thaumcraft, with some EE, IC, and Redpower supplementing things, and Buildcraft to bind it all together.

I got the technic pack earlier and tried it out in Creative to see what there was.

My eyes immediately glazed over until I found the nuclear stuff, then I went and stuffed a few reactors full of Uranium and watched them explode, and crashed my client by setting off a column of about 60 or so nukes inside a volcano.

I still don't understand a thing about it.

Basically, if you're starting out in it, just go with the basics first. Find iron, find redstone, find Copper and Tin. One thing you'll want to know and do are find Rubber trees, learn the recipe for a Treetap (simple, just 5 planks in [blank plank blank/plank plank plank/plank blank blank]) and use the treetap to harvest Resin from the rubber trees. Cook the resin to make rubber, line metal ingots in 3 to make wire, use rubber to coat wire. You get cables. Next, make a battery, make a Generator (makes electricity from burnables) make a Batbox, make a Macerator and an extractor. Blamo- the basic IndustrialCraft setup. doubles your metal ore output, trebles your rubber.

There's a pretty beast wiki up now.

I tried the wiki earlier and it made it 10x worse.

I think I'll just stick to punching trees and blowing crap up.

Completely possible! As the map is essentially endless, there's infinite villages. One of them will have a sapling in the blacksmith chest. Some of them may have diamonds (though all you really need is a bucket) and lava and water, meaning you can get to the Nether as well.

Really, all you need to survive, bare minimum, is a block of dirt and an Oak sapling- you have wooden tools, and apples. Best is for some wheat, though.

You're talking about going down past the giant wooden fort thing and then going northwest correct?

I may hash out a simple one block wide outline of it sometime for where I'm planning on running it. That way once I've got the outline done, you can just check the minimap, and if it's on your land or anyone else's I can get rid of it easy and make any changes needed. Does that sound alright?

Would a Dakka Tekkit server be possible I wonder?

It's all up to Lego, Yak and probably Dark who would likely have to run it as admin the end of the day.

You can run a server from a pc, so it's not impossible. Hell, I'd be Op if needed, but I doubt Lego or Yak would be keen on that.

Gave technic a try yesterday for the first time, it's confusing and awesome! I've watched most of Sips & Sjin and the yogscast videos on it.

i watched some of those youtube vids and that mod looks awesome, i really hope they consider using it as it vastly improves the game and adds so much more depth to it.

Additional mods are a bad idea for Technic/Tekkit. Though if its really not enough try this...

If you're really interesting in Tekkit, PrimarchofMechmarines is into Minecraft, and into Dakka/40K. He was actually running his own Tekkit server for a while, but didn't have enough interest. I'll talk him up.


Also, I just figured out an amazing use for ladders to create large areas where you take no fall damage at all. I may have to make a 'diving board' to show it off.

Technic launcher itself. It would check the jar then stall. I seem to have it going now though, just need to see how it goes with the mods. Seeing as I've got it going with my modified jar now.

i downloaded technic last night and had a go at it. is there a way to turn some of the mods that come with it off? i really do not need cats or rats or villagers. plus there is this annoying purple floaty thing that wont leve me the feth alone and i would like it to go away forever.

For ignoring the Mo' creatures mod, use Tekkit not Technic. Tekkit is designed for multiplayer but it's just better for SSP too, IMHO.

Or you can just turn the spawn rates of the Mo' Creatures mobs to 0 in the options menu. Though I do recommend playing Tekkit till you get your feet wet, because Better Dungeons and Thuamcraft can be rather difficult to work with...

I prefer tekkit by far, the stuff that the technic pack adds that tekkit doesn't really don't interest me.

I had it start up, check for updates, then stop, if that's what you mean. In that case, you have to double-click the .jar itself and it should start-up without requring the launcher.exe

Did that both ways, but it wasn't for the launcher itself but for the packs and the minecraft jar. I just brute forced it and it's all good now.

It didn't even care when I added it as an exception to the firewall and to antivirus as well so wasn't much else to do.

So far I'm liking the pack, trying to find a rubber tree. Left it off on a hill I'm using for a temporary base while I explore what looks to be a dangerous jungle. It has oil running through it and an erupting volcano.

From what I can tell swamps are the best place to find rubber trees.

there are smal rubber trees that look pretty much exactly like regular trees with darker bark, they also don't chop down all at once

Then there are HUUUGE rubber trees in forests, which don't give rubber, its actually pretty weird, these half palm tree looking leaves

What I ended up doing is going alchemy, putting my first few diamonds into an alchemist chest + upgraded AC, and then using a single sticky resin I am able to make more without a farm.

Once I passed that I used pipes to move a cobbler, then an automatic grass/tree farm into production of raw blocks to feed the chest.

At this point I've built my block operations into the side of a mountain overlooking a hindu town, I'm using a timer attached to the wiring that can go on anything to power everything, giving my tower a pulsing glow, I also have a filter that vomits any blocks I cannot convert or have any use for down into the town far below, lol.
I use the chest to convert the blocks into whatever I want for current building operations, Honestly with the control you have, and ability to not build a hilariously huge hole like with the quarry, I see little reason to not go alchemy for resources.

Rubber trees have two leaf blocks sticking out of the top, that's the easiest way to find them.

I'm still at the hit random trees with a wooden tap stage of things.

Tekkit sounds awesome... but there is just FAR too much stuff for me to understand and use...

It took me WAY too long to make an auto Cobble Farm really... but i know have it stored in my memory ^^!

Switched up from tekkit to technic. Found some ruins to act as a house then some ogre thing just broke through the whole thing forcing me to run until I found some pyramid to spend the night in...

You have 2 choices, turn them off (if you don't have the glitch) or play on easy, as they don't spawn on that level difficulty (AFAIK)

It's added fun to it though. The pyramid had about 5-6 iron picks in it and half a stack of gold. Not to mention the traps had enough harm splash potions it glitched and I have an infinite stack.

Only new mob that's killed me is the flying purple diamond thing. Tried to catch it and chased it around a bit.

Also what are the obby shrine things for?

Ogres can't break through Marble if I remember correctly...

So from what iv been told theres the free version too? or was that the beta? wanted to test it before buying. The classic version is the only legal freely available version, the full price of the game is really not much to cough up though.

I thought they mentioned there was a "demo" somewhere, but I haven't looked.

It's all part of thaumcraft.
From memory they are dungeons. I think.
You just need Vis crystals, which you get from the 'flyig prple tigs'

If you're having trouble with Ogres, try some of the different weapons. There's Flails, Warhammers, Waraxes, Spears, and Halberds. Most of them have a neato secondary 'fire' mode. Flails, for example, are like fishing rods, which you can right-click to launch at enemies; then you can actually swing it around, and the ball with flail about damaging things it hits.

Warhammers, if you hold right click, pull back and 'charge' a massive piledriver hit. One of those, and a single normal smack will kill an Ogre. Be warned, though, it takes a while to recharge.

Battleaxes just do a ton of damage, and can block like swords. I don't know what Spears or Halberds do- haven't made or used either yet.

I havent played with Railcraft yet. Too busy learning Thuamcraft, that gak is scary hard to get right, and theres really not alot of help online past your basic vis generator, which is just as dangerous to you as helpful...

I like the halberd. Made a flail and despite the fact that I always carry a fishing rod as a backup, I quickly lost interest in it and put it away.

I guess now that I have a house somewhat set up and some resin it's probably time to start trying to make the more complex stuff. Though not sure where to go. I do have about 20 diamonds from this one fortress thing I came across. Right in the middle of a village too.

And Railcraft is the stupidest, most overly complex mod I have ever seen. It just sucks. That said, Tunnel Bores are fun.

I have no idea what I'm doing with it. But I've managed to make a couple duplicates of diamonds and my house hasn't exploded yet. Was messing around in creative with the portable hole, has to be one of my favourite items of all time now.

Redpower isn't that complicated, I'd say IC2 is more complicated than redpower.

IC2 is complex in a good way, with logical steps and good overall execution. Same with RedPower, although the only things i really use are Pipes, Transposers, wires, block breakers, and Timers.

The thing about Railcraft is that it takes a long, long time, and the recipies are fairly expensive. No more making rails from some iron and sticks- now you need a Rolling machine, 4 Creosote oil, 12 Wood slabs, and the 6 iron, which is made into Rails on the rolling machine, then the Slabs and Oil are used to make wooden ties, which are used to make railbed, which is then used with the rails to make Track.

Right, i forked up the money for it and manned up question though, i got the (apparently normal?) message of it running out of memory, so looked it up, had a fiddle and allocated about 3GB to it (only have 4GB of RAM) carrried on mining down, found a cavern and then...same thing. memory crash or whatever it is. I was offline, would it be better playing on a server?

Minecraft doesn't really need 3GB RAM and giving it that much can lead to it mismanaging the memory in some circumstances, leading to the "out of memory" error even though it's got plenty.
First things first, if you've got 64-bit windows, make sure to get 64-bit Java to go with it, solves most problems right away.
If you still get memory issues then, try setting it to something more reasonable like 1GB
(for what it's worth I have 3GB RAM in my system, Minecraft is set to use 1GB and it actually only uses about 300MB most of the time).

thanks, seems you were right, when it asked/ordered me to update it sent me to the 32bit java. so for the 1GB i just set the min and the max to 1024 in the .bat file i assume? right oh will give it a go

right java64bit installed. im going to assume it wont clash with what it tried to update first?

Nah, I think either they're fine alongside each other or the 64-bit installer removes the 32-bit one first.

Yeh they go along each other with no apparent issues. I uninstalled the 32 bit, but some things seemed to complain so I have both at least.

Well I started a fun new map. A short walk from spawn and I find a ruined wooden house, right next to some castle. I break open the castle's door and the guard runs at me with a diamond sword and armour. Ages of punching him through the small gap in the door later he drops a diamond, which I make into a spear with the door parts.

I then cleared out my new house without any issues.

I made a new world and spawned next to a volcano and a large marble deposit.
The seed? Volcanoes&marble!

Maybe I need to make a seed called lotsofdiamonds or diamondseverywhere...

I've seen a village spawn, literally punching a chunk out of the side of a volcano. Lava flowing down onto their little wood houses.

So how do seeds work? iv been googling around, and so far all im getting is random numbers occasionally affect things?

They're a code for the world generator that'll give it instructions of sorts. When you start a new world, click the more options button and there should be a box to put in the seed. It can be the number, words or anything really. But, it is case sensitive. I also think that when you look at what the seed is with F3 it shows it up as a number regardless.

The world seed is always a number. It's just that the seed you enter when creating a world is transferred into this 10-ish digit number based on what you enter.

The only advantage the XBox version has is that you can locally host friends on your single-player maps.

I made the crafting memory table. It actually remember recipes, and automatically creates them from items in your inventory.

Quite a fun little mod. It was hard to do though, but I am satisfied with the results. I'll have to release it on dakka.

Its an extension of the Tekkit bench. It has a list of all the recipes from the things you have in your inventory. Basically translates it over into the workbench, you dial in how many you want and it automatically takes it to the workbench, and puts the result back into your inventory or drops it if you have no room.

I was going to code it to dump it in chests/tubes if connected, but I wanted to just do a vanilla mod first, and the IC/redpower team are notorious for doing C&Ds.
