True, I have followed this sad turn of events, and they all need to be riveted to a wall and made fun of and tomatoes tossed as they shout "Auslander Raus!"
Of course back in 1984, I had fun going into town and buying model kits in Neu Ulm, had a collection of 1/72 scale tanks as they fir inside our desk drawers more easily, and could play wargames in the barracks.

Post by: Viktor von Domm
well they scream that even louder... the opening of the berlin wall let some ugly urchins resurface it seems...
on a totally unrelated note... my son felix will be coming back tomorrow... we all had a rather saddened time when he was away... my oskar was the one that felt the absence of his brother the most... he is used to sleep together in the same room...they talk themselves to sleep and so on... now it is all quiet in that room all of a sudden...
and me...well I am feeling down because of the trip of felix too... but tomorrow all will be back to normal again...
for compensation...(mine^^) I have started a little welcome back present for felix... some of you may still remember the playmobil pirate ship I've build when my wife and kids have been on a trip...about a year or so ago...
well this time I've built something else... didn´t take WIP pics inbetween... but well come and see...they say^^... I've built a gun... just a gun? well my son is quite into star wars the clone wars... and there is one gun he always fantazises to shoot with... the Z6 rotary blaster... or for you not star wars fans out there... I've built a kids sized handheld gatling gun ...
see below :
the first coat of paint was done with cheap wallpaint... I will later on get the thing in the cellar for some spray can painting... you see some gaps where I couldn´t reach with the brush...
ALSO...
this is my workstation I have mentioned...
I have made this with just basic tools... and now I have togiether with some slef made rulers a very trusty means to get me straight cuts without the fear of slipping baldes etc...
I hope the pics are self explaining...if you have questions don´t hesitate to ask me^^:

Post by: Viktor von Domm
that is the plan... oskar soon is getting two handblasters like a commander does... and I still have a bolter made from wood that I need to finish... then we charge and storm every playground in our neighbourhood ^^ and size them for our own^^
2326
Post by: shasolenzabi
Sounds like a plan Vik!
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the gatling is made pure wood... and screws... I bet you could smash someones head in with that hyena^^...
as for the cutting setup... I built this thing with first a wooden plate... then I added a two sided rim...this provides a strong back to where I could put the to be cut material against... it thus can´t move anymore...and I don't slip with the knife...
then I use the appropriate thick ruler from my shelf... I have varying length ranging from small 1-5 cm and long 1-5 cm rulers as shown in the pics... this add up to thicknesses of way over 30 cm and thus I can create quite big cuts... also this setup makes cutting up squares quite easy and very quick...
I just put one ruler against the other and thus combine their width... a fairly easy and trusty method... Automatically Appended Next Post:
and we all know that we love it when a plan comes together, eh?

it is a biut heavy... but well it is based on the clone wars rotary gun... wielded by...hevy...^^...so^^.. but it will eventually get a strap... we´ve decided to that already...and my wife has plenty of materials for that as she is sewing for the family what i glue and cut^^...so ideal match^^

the barrels are made from pine wood... rather light and easy to work with as you probably know ...

regardless their name... i thought i needed to use these for the build as the concept of the MW screams archaic bloddy wristed knuckle fighter to me ... no fancy weaponry needed when a piece of sharpened metal suffices to disembowel a creepy heretic^^... well... i promised in gitsplitta´s thread to show the parts i used... and a bit how to...
well here goes:
these are the ogre fist weapons...(i really don´t know the name for them...) i got rid of the big spikes on the wrist guard... and then cut out the ogre fist... what a bloddy work, mind you... then i realized that i only needed a small part of the wrist guard and got rid of most of it...as you saw already in the model...
then i used these big tyranide plates i still have, together with some ornamental decoration from some elves i got in a bitzbox (how i love random bitz boxes!!!! conversion paradise!) together with some bigger "rivets" this creates my version of the mantis warrior shouldpad icon...
and these nid guns... i can´t recall atm their name provided the spikes for the mandibles on the beaky marine helmet...
and this is the base...
the motto will be..."preying mantis..." get it
plan is to make it look like some avatar movie terrain...cross your fingers for me^^

Post by: Viktor von Domm
we went to an artshop yesterday... basically it is a shroom? i think?... dried up pplant stuff they had there in one section... lots of more good usable stuff...
i am thinking pink... glowy pink on the ´shroom heads...
i think that will look even more wicked^^...(gosh...i love that word^^)
also...the whole base is covered first with a thick cork piece...then i built from the cork a rock... after that i placed the shroom bitz...then everything got covered in thick PVA...and then i liberally aplied huge amounts of superglue... this created that uneven surface... there was once a thread about that methode...

Reminds me of pictures of people in Florida going under their house to pull out alligators and snakes. Don't know if you saw it in the news but a guy here in the states caught a 19 snake that was loose and growing in the wild. I dislike snakes.

I've had lot of run ins with snakes. When I was 5-6 I was running around in our yard barefoot and stopped mid stride hen my mom screamed for me to "stop!", my heel was on he ground but my foot was just off the ground and the sound of her voice froze me where I was. Just then a copperhead slid under my foot, I would have stepped on it, but it's body rubbed giants the soul of my foo as it continued on, I just got queezy thinking bout the feeling again while typing this. When I was 8 we were at the lake of the ozarks going waterskiing. Before we got onto he boat another water skier wiped out near the shore, and hit a Nest of water moccasins. He died as he tried to get to the shore. We had snakes ll over our backyard growing up next to some woods, when m wife and I had our last house I was glad because here were no woods around for the snakes. But after every hard rain I'd be mowing the lawn and kill a water moccasin that got washed down to us in he culvert from the nearby ponds.
I dislike them very much, trying not t "hate"

Aw man, I have had snakes as pets, Boas and ball pythons, very smart ones too! they could even count the rats I fed them! so when one got bigger rats but just 4 not 5, she turned her head at me as if to "Stuff to you!" as the back of the head is the snake's vulnerable spot, but now I know a snake insult from that experience. Same snake had crawled on my head during a fever/headache and she cold compressed/Massaged the the pains away. It's us Humans who assume that every square inch of the planet is ours.

Speaking of counting rats, ferrets are good if you have aviaries and can train them to catch mice and not the birds. One quick nip to the neck, they'll dump it in a corner and hunt for more.
They really stink though...

Yes, Ferrets can be a little strong aroma to get used to, but if properly de-scented not so bad.
Ah, the wife is a biologist and afraid of animals, we have instilled in us a fear of snakes and reptiles, I subbed Reptus Minis for Chaos Marines for my Chaos army. But I have the old 30dollar codex, the newer codex looks nice, but hardbound an 50bucks puts me out

well here we are all pampered as there are literally no deadly animals fighting against us... and we don´t get the amount of guns here too... so what to do throughout the nights I ask ye?...we are a sad nation I tell you in no short order
on a totally unrelated side note...
I GOT A BIG SUPLY DROP BY THEO TODAY!!!!
materials and minis galore!
see for yourself:
wooden sticks...they feel almost sexy to the touch... soft and silken! I love them... will be very useful soon!
I first mistook these as PC Rods... but they are in fact cardstock rods... that means they will love PVA! which means I can play with them with little effort!!! and they come in lotsa different sizes! very cool I might add
when cardboard and wood gets praised...lets not forget about PC... this selection of cool stuff consists of granny grating, square tiled PC and diamond pattern and plain PC... and we know what wonders these can form, eh?
now some would say our fair theo is getting a bit insane... but who am I to argue...? right... he included some lamps and even a real searchlight...I need to make my own leagues searchlight I think ... also... those magnets...man... I didn´t knew how strong these were??? really... don´t underestimate these for a sec!! they are tough!...also I got that bunch of these red and cool and highly detaild rods he already got from dave!...wow... we´ve seen them getting some use in your thread already... and they are very versatile!. the whole selection is surrounded by chains... yeah... that will get some nice uses soon as well! and those nice small cloth pegs...!
enough?...not by far!
catachans galore... I even got marbo! he´s probably making a secret attack at the heart of Europe now^^...
by the way... o love those snipers...really... it is the most stylish way of getting rid of unwanted peeps
and these fellas finally drops my last walls I had built up to get me from making my own ´munda gang... these orlocks have a fething megaton of conversion potential! and the many weapon options they come with provide me with the means to make many cool and storytelling new models!... these models have places to go and other plastic soldiers to kill for sure soon enough! and that is no cheap postponed announcement... I will tackle my ´munda project asap... after I finish my current to do list... namely MW, temple, and brotherhood...then I will dive into the underhive
mannnnnnnnnyyyyyy thank you´s to theo for this cool care package!... I hope soon you get some good kharma for that awesomeness!
cheers, vik...(off to play with plastic men^^)

I got my karma last week , just took customs and the post office a few weeks to get to Vik. I was worried it had gotten lost in the warp, as I sent it a week before a package to Australia, and this came two weeks after that arrived. i think whenever i sent and receveived something from america it always is a so so situation... somehow it is not the distance... stuff from australia...namley vic miniaturs has traveld with godly speed... once everything was stuck at customs... and took almost like a month... then the next one took less then a fortnight...? i really despise customs... they are a scurge to traffic!
at LDD... indeed the arms of the orlcoks are stunning... these will be the biggest foundation of my gangers... i just need to find a cool theme...(in my mind i also dream about a gentleman gang of steampunky lards... but with my current range this will take some more time...now i will need to find some nice inspiration for a conventional 40kish gang with a nice twist...?)

dunno if I achieve actual OSL...which I would love to...but a glow effect... that is the main thing I aim for... tho if I get the glow right... than the OSL at least on the rock would be possible?....
as for the green... autoadjustment made it look a bit weirder... in reality it looks like a really strong and living sapling... or a juicy leaf...

Viktor von Domm wrote: what do you think about the first layers of the shrooms...and the stems...what colors should they have? as dark as now or another color?
I can't really tell on the current shroom colour, the picture is a bit dark for me (I think I have the brightness on my monitor much darker than anyone else...). But starting dark is good and if you blend them up through the colours in your reference pic' they will look cool.
As for the stems, I would say dark. As they will give contrast to the glowing shrooms (and therefore make them look brighter) and you could (maybe) use the stems to show osl, which will look better over a dark base colour.
28415
Post by: lone dirty dog
I would work from the darkest pink ( if the pic is the reference ) to the almost bright white if that makes sense yes a whole board of them would be your death
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
the pic is rather dark per se DR H...
blending is the main problem...
as for dark stems... dark as in dark puple or dark as in black?

Ahh, fair enough. Many times, someone has put up a picture and everyone else seems to be able to see things I can't...
Blending, I can't help you with much as I use different paints than you.
However, something you could try if blending is not working is feathering.
Use the smallest brush you have and do many tiny tiny thin strokes out from the centre of each shroom.
Start dark (as LDD said) and work up in as small increments as you can (the nearer the shades the better the blend) all the way to white at the very edge.
If you offset the strokes of adjacent shades you can get them quite close together and it will look a smooth colour transition and will actually give a little texture that smooth blending won't.
What are the stems now? I would say dark purple with black for shading.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
cool....that is a very useful help! I will try that for sure!
the blending is a very hard method for me... but many small strokes... that I probably can manage! that´s exactly the kind of tip I was hoping for!
well...gotta go to sleep now...

n0t_u wrote:I'd have started with white to make those glow, but either way works fine. You got a good green to contrast nicely with it already.
Oh yeah, that's a good point. The white is at the middle in the picture.
Start nearer the stem and work outwards is the easiest thing to avoid splodges on the already painted bits.
Glad to help Vik. I'm far from the expert on such things. We all learn from each other on here.

For a good glow- the trick is to have lowlights as well as highlights- you'll have some places shading into very tiny slivers of white, but you'll also have some places shading into specks of almost black.

And my 2 pence worth.....Deep purple to start, or possibly very deep blue through to purple, then through pinks to white. I am by no means an expert. Some of the best work I have seen for that would be Arakasi. His shading work is truly amazing.

So i went on with the painting with "dun it duncan"...
now i went for a more darker scheme alltogether and made a few needed touchups of red with mecharite red instead of blood red...this gives the whole mini another mood altogether...
also i did the capace and helmet firstly black and then steely and then again went over the steely bits with flesh wash to create a somewhat brassy effect...
hope it shows now...
also i washed the trousers with ogryn fleshwash and the white face too... so the trousers then received a rather heavy drybrush of undiluted white and where washed alter with fogryn wash again...also i couldn´t help but did the base too as i saw i reached quite a good level with the mini real soon...well there will be some work still on the mini but in concerns for the overall paintscheme i think i was kind of satisfied for now...
do you mind? do you think its not suitable? then tell me^^ as i would gladly do another testing before i go into large massproduction^^
the base of course will get a bit of a wash too and thus a bit of grittier look then...

You just can't paint a Cadian red and brass and call it steam punk
Conversions, especially steam punk conversions have need a lot more effort then that; I can just paint a cadian with blacks and blues and call it an ODST

Are those mushroom stalks or something? They look awesome!
One trick you might want to use, if you want something eye-catching for alien scenery grab some multicolored craft feathers from the art store and bits on top, to look like fronds. It's a way to make it look glowing and bright without a fancy paintjob or engineering anyway.
But also, sometimes the cheap dollar stores sell the cheap little fiber-optic lamps and that is also a great base for some trippy scenery.

I think they are actual feathers just cheap and dyed for craft purposes. Very useful for outlandish vegetation!
and these fibre optics are cheap, for $5 in my neck of the woods. You could make a tree out of that by twisting wire around the plastic threads and then twisting them, the result is a tree with glowing tips at the ends of the branches.

fiber optics would be cool, but i like vik's musha plants better. Vik, any work done on your fort or are you more like me where one project completely side-tracks another one?

Vik does get side tracked,,,,,,steamer air ship as we recall in the League, so much promise had that project.

I remember it fondly from ages ago when I would come to the painting and modeling blogs before i began to follow any real builds. I keep seeing the dystopian wars airship at the flgs and thinking of Viks build.

well... during the time of the rearanging my desktop here i got rid of the first one... now...my head is spinning like crazy to get started with one anew...BUT... first i really have to finish all my ther comp entries...for once... because i am in fact someone that gets permanently sidetracked... and the next big thing totally replaces my need/wish to complete the project at hand first... i always get the sad face from my wife when she sees me starting something new...^^
i think i should move my steampunk army more in the lairs of VSF and thus have a good excuse to make fancy looking gretchkins too
but first is the steampunk airship...i made today my son draw some sketches to have him more involved into the scene...
in two weeks summer holidays starts and then the building will start too...(this year holiday vacation got canceled due to money shortness...:( )

Getting the lads in on the airship project, I bet the son felt like a ship wright doing the designs for his Dad

Sorry to hear of the cancellation of the vacation Vik. We aren't doing one this year either for the same reason. But there's lots to do around our new house as opposed to our old one so we spent the funds on other things like: memberships to the botanical gardens, science center, and pool passes. The history's and art museums here are free except for special showcases, he Saint Louis Zoo is world recognized and free except for parking, but our grandparents gifted us with a Zoo friends membership which covers that, or free if you get there upper early. Also have the kids enrolled in vacation bible schools at four separate churches this summer. So four weeks where we get to drop them off for a few hours and have quiet time, and they get to have Funwith kids their own age and get more bible knowledge pumped into them

To do a wooden texture on a large scale maybe use an impression mat? Wife uses that for sugar craft, principle's the same.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
ah... graven... good of you to drop in... i wanted to ask you a favor... since your wife is so good in icing and cakemaking in general... i would like to see/show my wife a small collection of her works... we need to do every now and then some cool looking cakes for school and other times ... any helpful pics would be gratefully to be seen!
also... as for wooden texture... i used PVA a heavier coat on what to texturize... let it set for five minutes or something and then with a stringer brush make the wood grain...

and this is after some more serious work today:

Very nice vik, that airship will be grand. I'm glad you decided to "nut up" on this project sorry I just had zombie land playing in the background I've steered away from the zombie craze until now. I think I will be forced to make a necromunda loot counter in the shape of a Twinkie now

Viktor von Domm wrote:well tomorrow i planned to do some drill bit sanding on the cockpit... and i need to figure out some way to get the tail done...and some way to make good looking engines...

engines look best as jet turbines. A common approach is to cut out all the blades that go in some ring, and then glue them to a center rod.
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
LOL... the size of said twinkie... would that be the size of the central park maybe
and yep... the airship is a character must... IF this one will be the true thing... remains to be seen.... it will get to the amount of finished as all my models do secretly i had planned a two blimp airship... with a landing platform in the middle... the current one has some flaws so this one will be the classic one blimp and gondola one^^
62749
Post by: Dr H
Good start Vik.
For the engines I built for my WS I used the tube for the pump from a soap-pump-dispenser and for the fan blades I cut a circle of card, cut slits to make the blades (not all the way into the centre), then twisted them slightly in the same direction and then fixed them in place with superglue.
A blob of putty in the centre. more to fill the gap around the edges...
Then add pipes and wires and give it some paint...

Nice Start Vik! I look forward to more!

Haven't tried these guys Vik, but they have the same size sticks I sent you but in 18" lengths. @0.20 each seems decent. Not sure if they ship international or not, and minimum order is $25.00 online, but you can call them for smaller orders.
http://www.thebalsastore.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=452&category_id=218&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1
Otherwise I'll check at hobby lobby the next time I'm there, I think that's where I got them from. Make sure to use their coupon and get 40% off the item
24297
Post by: Viktor von Domm
hey theo, don´t go looking at hobby lobby on account of me... sending big amounts of wood across the ocean would be quite too much on postage... i am stretching my fingers atm for some similar stuff here in germany... when my school free time hits me, then i will visit my favorite artshop balsa wood is just too common to send it around the globe ... your care package tho opened up some new doors to materials ...so that was a good deed^^
at Dr H... brilliant looking engine!... your thread is still on my need to start to read list
at dave...thanks mate... not really done any work on the flyer today... but tomorrow we have a school free day... next week is a presentation week and we did all our needed planning and prep work already so we got a day free^^... which will be used
30672
Post by: Theophony
Vik, the guy from that web site called me back. He does ship internationally, and those are close outs. Also they are hardwood, not balsa. The company just specializes in balsa products. Once these are gone they are gone, his manufacturer is out of business for these.

Vik will complete this as long as the world does not end. This is one of those modeling projects that we all have the desire to do, but just need to step back every now and again to look from a different angle. It is also one he has a big passion for, so he is doubly encouraged to complete it.

those where not my kids... spewing milk over the kitchen floor... my wife would go ballistic... milk has the tendency to reek after a few moments...at least that´s what she always says...
so... update time...:
so...here is the flyer as is... it got some serious...half-finished engines...thanks for the how to hints on the propellers Dr H!!!
as you also can see I have built up the canopy of the cockpit, of course this will need lotsa rivets before we can call it finished
and the current look of the engines backside... I have currently no idea how to close/seal this ideas from your side would be greatly appreciated!
and also I have worked on the gondola of the airship... here you can see the current look... together with the blimp... which was deemed from my wife and my son felix as now to be too small for that giant gondola...darn^^...
for stability reasons I have drilled four holes into the bottom of the gondola so that it will rest on for stands ...
cheers, and have faith with my ability to complete something

Nice nice vik! Progress is getting quicker too. Im now trying to think of how to start a skaven airship. The balloon is a real pain in the arse since i have no ability to work with anything other than metal, plastic or resin So tomorrow i shall hunt through all the cheap £1 shops looking for a kids toy or such an item for the balloon! Edit: Im a dumb gak! Water guns have a perfect shape tank on them, and they are plastic! I need to aquire one.

at shaso... the gondola is big 26x9x7 cm are the measurements... I have to solve the size issue of the blimp soon... also... this is still not the airship I secretly wanted to do... but it is the airship I will do now^^...
and guns/weapons are planned.... I want to add rockets and some lasgun-ish weapon systems...

Paper mache and me dont mix all that well vik, i hate the stuff after years of playing with it at school.
Dont get me wrong, its nice to work with and shaping it is so easy its unreal, but its just a material i really dislike to use on models
Closest i use to that is card, and thats only for small cut and stick details that i cant be arsed to sculpt instead
Anyways, 11pm here and im booked in at 8am tomorrow to have more work on the tattoo (5 hours worth) so im heading off for the night.
Hope to see more progress when im back tomorrow vik
I am painting stuff, just a warp lightning cannon, so slow since its big, blocky and a ton of hard to reach spots.

yup... quite big... which means the blimp needs to be seriously resized to fit to the gondola...what do you think regarding the spikey look? will I get away with that in a steampunky context?

Flyer is coming along nicely Vik. Well done on the fan blades, look very neat (most of my attempts were not). Look forward to seeing the rest of the engines as they progress.
I used loads of internet pictures of real jet engines as inspiration for my detailing work, although if you're basing the flyer on a Valk' you could follow that, or will you be steampunk-ing these up to the max?
Interesting design for the gondola, look forward to how this progresses.
