In the absence of wings, perhaps several bunches of helium balloons? It's only lift you're after, you've got your thrust sorted

(Extra points if the ballons have 'Happy Decanting Day Magos' on them)

Alas, no. This is the Vulture conversion kit, I found it (and some Punisher Cannons) on eBay for $40 total. I just happen to have a ton of leftover/scrap Valkyrie parts, and I THOUGHT I had a pair of wings...but I didn't.

Also? I didn't notice I had hit 50 pages. Uh, cake for everyone!

Well to be fair you did celebrate page 50 by coming out as a drag-zombie, not many folks have done that yet!

Here's to another 50 pages of re-building and reclamation, plus more cake

So what did you do with the matching right wings

MORE ZOMBIE CAKE!

After I am finished with the Vulture, I'm going to be left with a bag of parts that, frankly, are not good enough to make another Valk out of. Sad, but true. Their destiny is terrain, because I DO have enough to build a crashed Valkyrie!

We should compel Brian to celebrate 50 pages by building something outlandish... but then he does that all the time anyway... :z

You'll have the two heavy bolter mounts, the tail pieces, whatever weapons the Vulture can't mount, the nose (minus cockpit interior unless you don't plan on modelling that), and whatever landing skids you choose not to use.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2012/11/12 14:13:13

NO! You'd need 1 fuselage, two wings and the tail booms to make another valk

Just a random flyer is a completey different thing - might not even need anything else

Waaagh the Dog @ 2012/11/12 14:29:15

Post by: dsteingass

It doesn't have to be a valk, I'd gladly trade top engine speed for a ordinance package of 20 twin-linked autocannons

Waaagh the Dog @ 2012/11/12 14:35:12

Post by: monkeytroll

Just sayin', that's all.

You can get a flyer out of the cockpit and tail sections if you try - but don't think it would hold your planned load-out

I'd just like to say that the FLIGHT DECK is getting kinda FULL.

Popped the canopies, the cockpit interiors were installed on the Sky Talons, so I should be able to sand-and-lacquer recover the glass, and maintain my interior detailing streak.

So:

4 Valkyrie/Vendetta Airframes
1 Vulture Airframe
2 Skytalon Airframes
2 Arvus Lighter Airframes

I own nine Sentinels, but I need to see if Talons can carry regular Sentinels or only "Drop Sentinels". Not that it matters, much. My other "problem" is that these are Imperial Navy vehicles, and I want to keep the theme of a screaming orbital descent. This means that I may need to mod the Skytalons to hold some form of drop shielding, which the vehicles stand on. We shall see.

Hi kids! It is time for another lesson! Today, Brian tries out airbrush pre-weathering!

Primed white, with light grey random spray, and then dark grey panel lines.

[img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/17/432140_sm-
Imperial%2C%20Navy%2C%20Sky%20Talon%2C%20Vulture%2C%20Work%20In%20Progress.JPG[/img]

Sky Talons

Vulture and Valk/Vendetta. The Valk is not pre-weathered, it has been worked on by hand with brushes, and some masked-off areas to create lighter panels, to show that it has been recovered from severe damage. This is the ex-chaos salvage Valk.

So, in the span of a few hours, I have pushed four vehicles through to a state where I'm ready to detail and decal. I really do love airbrushing.

Thanks, Galorn!

I don't have a very precise airbrush, so I found it was hard to do more than shade heavy, and then go over pretty much the entire hull. My 'panel lines' were also very, very wide because of it.

Hello ladies and gentlemen!

I could use your assistance. I need to figure out a good set of Conscripts for my Praetorian forces. Now, as the fine gentlemen will be representing Imperial Navy forces, I have considered using Cadians and or Catachans as low-level Navy grunts, indentured humans, squabbies, etc. Imagine hive gangers from Necromunda, and you're not that far off.

My problem, of course, is that it really doesn't 'tie in' well to the theme. I have some ideas which I will try out.

So I'm throwing the floor open. I've tried Empire minis, but with their tights and poofy sleeves, they really don't cut it. They're also weedly little things. I've looked through the various GW ranges of 'human' figures, and nothing's really jumping to mind.

Any ideas?

If your not, you might want to pick up metal drill bits... I got a range of 50 different sizes at my local charity shop for a couple of pounds, but even at full whack metal ones are worth the cost imo. mainly because when I used to snap the crappy gw ones I also used to stab myself with the snapped end

Thanks for marching through! Mine's easy, there's only a few pages. It isn't a threadnaught like Skalk's or Gits.

As for converting, I have found two things:

1) If you can see it, you can make it.
2) Buy a good saw.

Just a quick snap. I'm replacing the central tower, but I wanted y'all to see just how STUPID this thing is. I mean, seriously. Ground to top of the tower is fourteen inches. someone needs to chaos-ify this, paint it pink, and slam it on the table, saying, "EXCUSE ME, but I need room for my PINK CITADEL and its FOURTEEN INCH TOWER."

sigh.

Anyways, there's some servitors on the battlements. Can you play "spot the odd one out"? Sure you can. Zoom-able in the gallery for those who wish to play along at home.

Even at 14" it's still ridiculously small. You've seen me go off about comparative scale before, so I'll restrain myself as much as possible this time. I will however offer this size chart as an example of why scale drives me so mad in this game:

And yes, I consider that to be a smaller to mid-sized building depending on the planet.

*eye twitches*

LOL when in the 25 year history of 40k has proper scale been a concern? never. You just have to let it go. If you care about scale, GW is not for you. The whole truescale marine phenomenon is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Why make marines truescale when not a single human is truescale?
you've GOT to let it go...

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/01/11 17:10:57

Post by: Briancj

I care not for scale. After all, most starship miniatures games I play, the true 'scale' of the miniature would be the size of the top of the flight stand peg.

My complaint about the fort is the massive wang tower. WANG. TOWER.

*froth*

Oh well. Once I replace it with working smoke stacks, life will be ever so much better.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/01/11 17:29:48

Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe

For what it is worth, I think the tower looks quite cool. I'm going to be putting a Shrine of the Aquila together soon. It's pretty tall as well. Excellent LoS blocker. I would like to eventually get a Fortress but it's not going to actually be the building it is intended to be.

Question for you since you already have one- on most GW building panels it has a plain backside. Is this true for the FoR as well? That will be a huge selling point for me if it does.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/01/11 18:01:15

Post by: Briancj

Yes and no.

The 'inside' of the various panels are blank, but they're NOT modular and do NOT work well with CoD panels. Additionally, the tower is molded in a way that the interior is minimal plastic use, thus rounded and bumpy. And since the tower is narrower at the top, it doesn't work with CoD pieces, either.

GW really missed a chance to make something great with this kit.

In fairness though the wall of martyr's kits look really good! And it's nice to see a GW scenery kit for 40k that isn't either city, forest-y, or just a hill. (I'm ignoring the planetstrike stuff here cos that was designed with the expansion as opposed to just the kit - and yes I know the same happened with COD but they've become more just scenery than the expansion).

Uh as a person who actually painted a full set of WoM... They are crap. they were designed to 80%...

<Snip> Repost from my General terrain thread.

It looks unfinished because its modeled that way... no seriously any more detailed shading makes it look worse... get a close up look at a set if you can. there are what in FPS games are referred to as "clipping errors" EVERYWHERE. Boxes in walls. Skulls where a single skull stretches to infinity etc... Ease of "assembly" 4 of 5, to 5 of 5 depending. (the bunker is the 4), Replicated tessellated details everywhere. the SAME EXACT BODY was used on no fewer than two points on Each "straight "section and once on each of the "T" emplacements and twice on the "bunker." The longer you look the more odd things you will find. It looks an awful lot like there was a highly detailed and half assed resin master created, that was then vacuformed, then the vacuform was turned into the production mold.

I would strongly recommend another trench terrain piece as a "pre fab" purchase. as a fully assembled and cohesively painted piece it works, but it will never be "pretty". The Ageius lines are an example of the right way to do it, the wall of martyrs... not so much
</Snip>

an eaxample of the "clipping errors" is visible in this pic, notice the deceased cadian torso being stretched down into infinity...

I am matching the design of the original Fortress. The top platform is a little wider than the Pyramid of Dork, which is why I built the smaller platform.

Classes - Many, I believe, are below your skill level, but they have a LOT of classes. And I believe you know that even a basic level class may should you a technique you don't know, or a refinement of a technique you have not run into. They also have mid and high-level classes. All are hands-on. I took home several pounds of Hirst arts casting stuff, and got casting TOTALLY de-mystified for me.

Social - Meet a LOT of Dakka-ites. Drinking! Carousing!

Gaming - Demos, Demos, Demos, mini tournaments, Demos, Demos, DEMOS.

Shopping - Starting with Forge World and down to many small publishers/producers.

Bitz - AMAZING bitz stores, and on the last day, individuals selling stuff for dirt cheap they don't want to take home.

More progress.

Using 3M spray mount 77 and a rolling pin. Noticing that edges don't want to stay down. I'll have to touch up with glue, and weigh everything down for 24 hours, I think. Thankfully, the building sections can achieve that by stacking themselves up. I'll flip the 2x4 road sections upside-down for their glue setting time.

MEANWHILE...

I've painted the edges of the templates with light grey, to simulate concrete curbs (kerbs for you weirdo Brits), as well as cover up the fact that I did not use a guide to make my ripsaw cuts.

Tools of the trade.

Curbs!

I hate spray glue..never works right for me. If that fails, get one of those household trim-painting rollers (6 inches long or so) and roll on white glue.

The baseboard is now complete.

After a short internal debate, I am going to glue the raised sections directly to the supporting MDF boards. The purpose of this project is to build an ultra-portable cityfight board. To achieve this, the actual buildings need to be removed from the baseboards, and then tesselate/fit into a single box easily. This means a few design considerations come into play:

1) The buildings themselves (walls, etc) cannot have floors. This would increase bulk, and difficulty of storage.
2) The buildings themselves need to have a height consideration. More than a couple of floors, and some way of dismantling them needs to come into play. Obviously with rare earth magnets, this becomes a lot easier.
3) The buildings are going to be mostly two-sided, as there is a LOT of corner space here.
4) Creating pathways between upper floors allows me to use the conveniently-labelled 4x4 section of the original map for skirmish games such as Necromunda. Look for the yellow-and-black hazard striping that separates the furthers 2x4 section of board. Good design on GW's part.
5) Land Raiders will not fit up the roads without a little work (need to set back the walls about 1/4" from the sidewalks, give or take.
6) Superheavies are RIGHT OUT.
7) Depending on the height of the buildings, many Flyers will be problematic. I kinda don't have a problem with that...

Because of #1 and #2, I can glue the floor templates down to the underlying 2x4 MDF boards. This means easier setup and takedown.

Yes, I understand I can not glue the bases down, and use the buildings elsewhere. Just lay down the floor template, lay down the building, and go. I may still do this, but the primary goal here is to get a very portable, very playable, easy to set up cityfight board into my inventory. Everything else is tertiary at best.

I will ponder this on the tree of woe, while I enjoy the snowpocalypse.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd a size test. For those of you who haven't ever seen this Battlemat, here's an idea of how tight things actually are. There are sidewalks, which allow for sponsons to exist. But that land raider? NOT SO MUCH. Good job, GW.

Of course, this mat was made before the large oval base was invented...or non-forge-world flyers...

But the artwork on the mat? ACES!

Still very impressive.. thou the LR may not fit. Not every city in the Imperium with city planning needed to consider this when being built.

As for aircraft.. not many are designed for combat inside and around tall buildings ( today even) anyway so that makes perfect sense. Usually they bomb you from miles away or miles above . So I think it's very realisitc. citys are flattened or taken by boots on the ground!

This is image #667. The previous image is the IMAGE OF THE BEAST. And now you know.

Work. In. Progress.

Looking at my available wall sections, including the sexy necromunda bulkheads, I probably do not have enough STUFF for the table. However, I do have a lot of Necromunda cardboard terrain.

I could pull a Dave or a Skalk, and kinda go to town on replicating in plasticard...OR I could TOTALLY paint the entire town in garish 90's Games Workshop schemes, with hazard stripes EVERYWHERE...and use the Necromunda terrain AS IS.

I'm sorely tempted.

I also have the foamcore cityfight terrain templates, too.

Again, Tempting as hell.

Thoughts?

The flyer is a bitch, let me tell you. Still pissed at FW for pulling the Aquila Lander.

Mechanicus moves forward, I have the cultists, some more servitors on the way, my HQ, two of three Demon Princes, all three Chaos Spawn, the fort (which I have to trace) and the Forgefiend. I have to build a third Daemon Prince, finish the flyer, and build a Giant Chaos Spawn. Uh, I mean, another robot. ^_^

Then, it is to the airbrush!

Umm....couldn't help but notice you use OR as though these were mutually exclusive options......

AND works much better I think

Yeah, I'm seriously considering AND. This project, as they are want to do, keeps mutating. But I'd like this to be done, not linger on like many projects I tackle.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 16:17:48

Post by: monkeytroll

Good point, well made

Well..if you paint up your ready plastics to match the old-skool terrain you could count it as finished, then start on replicating in plastic a la Dave as further distraction projects after.....

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 16:44:37

Post by: Briancj

I'm not sure I want to replicate in plastic. The goal of this board is a highly-portable cityfight board. If you look at most cityfight terrain boards, they are *NOT* portable.

One of the advantages of the old Necromunda terrain is that it DOES disassemble. There's a value, there. The question becomes "what can be done to enhance the terrain?"

Also, when creating a board like this, you start thinking about other design considerations. Fire lanes. Line of sight. 'fairness'.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 17:25:03

Post by: inmygravenimage

'Fairness'? Meh. Modular is the way forward...

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 17:41:34

Post by: dsteingass

Replication al la Dave takes a stupid amount of time!

It needs approached for the skill excersize in itself.

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 17:46:21

Post by: monkeytroll

But the results are well worth it

Waaagh the Dog @ 2013/02/10 20:54:59

Post by: Briancj

Somewhat hard to do modular on a fixed board, with odd template sizes. But it is coming along. The key, I have found, is an understanding of the true need for terrain that blocks LOS. Otherwise, CC armies just DIE.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, upon assembling the pile, I find that I am in the possession of both a full set of Necromunda terrain *AND* a full set of the Outlanders terrain. I suspect I'm missing a few bulkheads, but that's trivially easy to fix.

So I'm going to go for it. Breaking out the superglue, going make the buildings a little more robust for the purposes of travel, as well as ease of transport.

More city growth. Necromunda and Outlanders buildings, the Manufactorum gains the second floor walkway, elevated road/piping supports are under construction, and a corner building is mostly complete.

Plastruct trusses are on order, so I can reinforce the necromunda/outlanders terrain.

So far, there will be:

Elevated Road/Pipe (swappable) - Skyshield supports and plasticard
Refinery - Necromunda Terrain
Tank Farm - Containers, piping, and some of my precious Chip Trays
Vehicle depot - Outlanders Terrain
Manufactorum (bombed) - Cityfight Terrain
Habitation Modules (bombed) - Cityfight Terrain
Arbites Precinct - Bastion/Skyshield

If I need more filler, I will use some of the older GW templates, cityfight bitz, and plasticard. Some Pegasus buildings may also appear as money allows.

Progress, click to zoom.

I am going to have some thoughts about things, after Adepticon. But the $85 giant Tau robot has pushed me over the edge. Even if I buy only used/abandoned junk off of eBay, how can I justify playing a game whose company so clearly and obviously has abandoned all pretense of being the company I once loved? I keep reading how people are 'so excited' and 'a golden age' and it's all bs. Total Stockholm Syndrome.

    I have to quit.

Yeah that price is just stupid and you have to buy the codex on top of that and thats if you already have some Tau figures.

I've been looking into other skirmish games recently and there's quite a few interesting ones about.

I agree completely Brian. I understand they are shooting for a premium product here but a lot of these prices are a bit excessive.

Speaking of Adepticon, how goes the mechanicum force you're bringing? I am very excited to see what neat ideas you've put together to go along side the ordinatus.

Everything's got a lovely basecoat (thanks, airbrush) and major metallic parts. I'm in the process of adding hazard stripes, painting 20 figures worth of servitor flesh, etc. Boring as hell, but I found that Soft Body Black does a great job of making pallid, disgusting skin tones pop!

Secret Weapons Miniatures Soft Body Black*. The miracle fluid.

*Yeah, you can make it yourself,. But I'm LAZY.

I see your point totally ever rising prices and some really bad sculpts of late, thats why I try and use as much 3rd parties as I can.
I look forward to the day when these companies produce complete miniatures, then we will see what happens in the market place.

    And then this happened...

    Imperial Robot (Forgefiend)

Magos (Chaos Sorceror on Nurgle Palanquin)

Mechanicus Squad (Chaos Marines with Rhino)

    Maintenance Servitors (Cultists)

    Construction Servitors (Cultists)

    Demolition Robot (Giant Chaos Spawn)

    Gribblebots (Chaos Spawn)

    Scrapyard Robots (Daemon Princes)

    Forgepoint Mechanicus (Fortress of Redemption)

Ordinatus Falken (Ahahahahahahaha, no. Maybe someone will borrow it for the Apocalypse Battle)

And, for giggles, I did, in fact, make a PAINT SERVITOR.

    Yeah! I went there!
