The CAT train provides me the following, for $40:
The makings of a Squat Land Train. If you think I've been looking for a reason to bring in those disturbingly hot Age of Sigmar airship dwarfs, well, you'd be right, and now I have.
The makings of various ADmech/civilian 40K vehicles, etc.
Track for some OTHER project, unknown as of yet.
A motor/control system for yet ANOTHER, another unknown project.
A bunch of crappy "train" wheels, maybe for use with the track, maybe for something else, who knows?
BITZ FOR THE MECH BOX.

And, yes. I could NOT resist a $5 plastic "gatling" water gun. Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaave you met me?
I want to see- nay- need to see the titan that gatling gun goes on!

Ah yes... that would make for a really fun gaming board. Have debated doing something similar on and off over the years. Combining "train play" into "terrain play" for the battlefield.
You would never know that this ship had been scratch-built from some common, household components! Especially primered white like this, it looks like a prop right out of Space: 1999!

And so, with only two out of ten people who expressed interest/signed up through the survey showing up for the first campaign day/event, the Scarlet Planet campaign attempt goes down in flames.
And with it my desire to...well, do anything tabletop gaming related here in the US.
Okay, so. It's been a hard time here at Casa El Johnson (home of the whimper).
Since I have no tabletop gaming group, and I just don't have to spoons to create one from whole cloth, I have decided to downsize to my painted work, and a handful of projects.
This means I'm going to be selling off a LOT of Imperial Guard, Marine, and everything else at 'get it out of my house, it just depresses the hell of out of me' prices.
If anyone wants a gander before I push it up to the interwebz, please let me know.
So far:
Empire of Men - Tanks, mostly. May keep one or two of what I ordered (a third of which wasn't even shipped) as a painting project.
Imperial Guard - Tanks, troops, buckets of heavy weapons teams, metal stormtroopers (non-cadian), 2x Baneblades (new, in box).
Admech - Skitarii, Cawl, tech marines, walkers, other stuff. Lots of bitz to make very custom versions of the Breachers, etc.
Titans - 2x Knight and a Warhound. These are recasts, but good ones. Yeah, yeah. Save it.
Marines - Everything under the sun. Tanks, troops, etc.
Brettonians - God only knows, haven't looked at this stuff in forever.
...and more!
Please PM me if you'd like early-access to the spreadsheet I'm putting together.

Also, a preemptive thanks for all the apologies, etc. However, I ask that you do not comment with such, it just makes the depression worse.
Instead, cheer me on in what printing/modeling projects I'll do in this next phase of my life!
Well I'm excited to see what's next. I feel your lack of game- pain, totally failed in my attempts to get a a dreadball league going. Keep inspiring us with your... Liberation!
Nope, nothing's double-stacked. However, I have found that the Vallejo laser-cut shelves do an INCREDIBLE job of obscuring the bottles' labels. In addition, the second column of bottles on each level is completely blocked by the first column.
No sir, I don't like 'em. Two thumbs down for the Vallejo paint bottle holder shelves.
---
The drawers are only deceptively thin. They are deep enough to hold brushes, markers, pencils, pens, paint markers, pliers, cutter/nippers, a hole punch, various x-acto handles (including the thick red plastic ones), and more. And, yes, my OCD made me label each one.
Syro_ wrote: Set up looks great, and that's amazing that you got those paint pots so cheap.
I traded all of my tabletop terrain and parts for it, and a few other things. I didn't (and still do not) have the mental bandwidth to run 40K events, anymore, so I traded it to a game store run by someone I know. Talk about making space in my life, and mental bandwidth.
It was win-win. And, checking in on the store and finding all of my terrain still in boxes, in storage, I can honestly say I came out WAY ahead on the deal.
--B.
(One of the 'other things' was one of the GW Imperium flags...)
Here is an example of a traditional 40K unit, represented in Strikepoint.
Each unit is represented by a Unit Board, which holds a Unit Card.
The board defines the type of unit (typically a squad or vehicle) with spots for holding dice.
Different unit types have a different layout, which may be further modified by a unit's origin (race, regiment, etc).
An elite unit of alien rangers may consist of 5 miniatures, as opposed to the example squad of 10 miniatures.
A d6 for each miniature in the unit is placed into the board, along with any dice for special abilities.
In this case, the 10 members of the Guardsmen Squad (Guardsmen, Heavy Weapons team, Special Weapon, and Squad Leader).
Strikepoint, uses a different color of die for a given miniature, to speed up dice-rolling.
The two green dice are used to keep track of the Grenades! special ability.
When a miniature becomes a casualty or is killed, or a special ability is used, the die is removed from the board entirely.
Here are the sections of the Unit Card. All info needed to use the unit in battle is presented on the card.
Unit Name: A blank area for you to write the name of the unit.
Unit Info: The unit's Target Number (TN), Base Movement (Move), and weapon info.
Default Orders: What the unit can do during its activation.
Default Orders can be temporarily overridden by an Orders Card issued by a commander, or a Battlefield Event Card.
Dice Icons: What dice are needed for the miniatures and special abilities of a unit.
You may, of course, use your own colors of dice, as long as it is clear to your opponent which die represents a given miniature.
So, 2019 will be an interesting year. This is definitely now a "Git 'er done" year, where I put things into display cases, and generally FINISH PROJECTS, instead of buying new stuff.
So, with that in mind, let's take a look at project #1, which is to refresh my nine Imperial Guard Sentinels. That's three squads of three, as I'll be putting them together as per the usual rulesets/GW Rule o' Three.
These all need their bases de-yellowed, some cleanup, maybe a few more licks of paint. Two of them never got more than an initial whitewash, and need their details picked out.
In the background, you can see my giant bin o' gravel, which is what I use to base pretty much everything, along with cork and/or real rocks. The gravel is a mix of fine and medium coarseness model railroad ballast.
I've also got a shaker of Woodland Scenics 'snow', and some of the new GW textured paint to play with. I use 'modge-podge' for glue, nowadays. Better, cleaner than GOE (Good Old Elmer's), and the nozzle never clogs.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And some progress. Added an aerial to the third group leader, and dug out my collection of ancient flag stickers to pull up flag (3).
Based, painted, and washed the final two Sentinels. Debated trying to find thicker bases for them, decided I just don't care.
Refreshed the snow on the other bases.
For the record, the Citadel Texture paints are a waste. Make your own.
Next up, after the wash dries, is to apply a light whitewash again, plus a touch of edging/drybrushing. A handful of details, decals, and done!
Camkierhi wrote: Strike point sounds very interesting, but no pressure on it. Will be following your progress on that though.
The sentinels look great, was the army always "arctic"? Again following with interest.
Love the desk.
Thanks! We'll see if I actually finish Strikepoint, or if I aimlessly wander off again.
As for the army, it's been arctic for a long while, now. I've played around with desert and other such things, and my earrrrrrrly work was grey, grey, and some grey.
Once I settled on arctic, I plowed on through, converting everything over, and it's been thusly ever since. As written in prophecy.
--B.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I realize, in hindsight, that giving away all my terrain means I have nothing to build dioramas out of, and/or terrain to demo Strikepoint on/with.
I always liked the sentinels and their concept, but wish they would have expanded the idea more, not sure exactly how, but I think there isn’t room there.
Theophony wrote: I always liked the sentinels and their concept, but wish they would have expanded the idea more, not sure exactly how, but I think there isn’t room there.
Well, the biggest flaw is how every other walker in the game mounts multiple weapons, etc. Even back when the "big advantage" of a walker is that it could move and fire two weapons, the best you could do was have the chin mount and an HK missile. Really, they're one of GW's "Models without a Cause".
PS:
Four Ikea DETOLF display cases are on their way to me.
Yup! 6mm U-bolts and acrylic or glass shelves. I can source these myself, so I can even try and 'match the glass', or take glass from one to add shelves to another, and put acrylic into the now-empty, to try and maintain a cohesive appearance.
I'll let you know!
I *CAN* say it is worth having them shipped to you. Each cabinet consists of two packages, one about 45lbs the other 30+lbs. IKEA shipping tops out at $79 (here in the US) so once I went past #2, I was getting free shipping on 'em. FAR better than driving, dealing with crowds, loading 80 lbs of cabinet into your car (for me, over 300 lbs...) driving home, UNloading, and then finding the energy to put them together.
Also, remember: They're GLASS. Tempered, but still GLASS. They can BREAK, if yer stupid*.
I can say this would be a LOT easier with two people. However, it can be done by one person, carefully.
The most important thing is to make sure the two side 'ladders' are adjusted evenly, when you screw their end caps on. Otherwise, you get a trapezoidal warp that requires you to rotate the entire cabinet, so you can work on the bottom caps.
Yes, I have a slight warp. No, I'm not going to try to single-handed-ly rotate this cabinet.
One step has you putting a plastic corner protector on the door, while you maneuver it in place. This is smart, because your natural tendency is to put the corner on the floor. But, then you have to remove it and put the magnetic plate in its place. Instead, just mount the latch plate.
Otherwise, the shelves sit tight on their little rubber feet, and do not have enough 'play' to slide to one side or the other and fall. As someone who lived in Los Angeles, I can say that if you use the wall-mounts, this would survive most low to mid range shakes without a problem.
Onto #2...
Automatically Appended Next Post: And here's a scale reference for you all, so you can see what things look like inside the cabinet.
Adding four more shelves would not interfere greatly with the visibility of the models. However, there is plenty of room for flyer-based models, with other models below.
First, a shot of the 3/16th inch cable clamp in place. Four of these provide corners to support a sheet of acrylic or glass. Here's a piece of incorrect thickness/length, for illustration purposes. I have some acrylic on-order.
And now, four little DETOLFs, all in a row!
Pain in the butt to have to do it alone, two people could rip through these in about 30m each.
Note: ZERO trapezoidal warp strength, really, so screwing them to the wall with the supplied L-brackets should really be considered, even if you're not in an earthquake/cat zone.
--B.
Automatically Appended Next Post: While digging around, found these old things to put into the case. You know, stuff you keep for nostalgia reasons.
Lighting will be interesting. Unlike the traditional use of DETOLF shelves (china, artwork, etc.),
using them for displaying models and toys means the density is much higher, less light can filter down from the top.
So, I'm not entirely sure if I'm going to add more expense to bring in lighting.
As you can see, the shelves are only about 11"x15", less than an 11"x17" sheet of paper! The space fills up VERY fast.
So, once I add four more shelves to each, internal lighting will be terribly inefficient.
I have seen vertical strip LED working beautifully in these. Very envious of the display and the room to house it. I have a wall full but does not seem to hold half of what I would like.
You've succeeded with causing me cardboard jealousy
It looks like you could build another whole group of load bearing shelves out of that cardboard. Speaking of which, the shelves look great all lined up together
So, this is mostly clean-up and repair, as I place things into the display cases. So, here's what I've bashed out, so far in the repair/cleanup queue:
Since I no longer need to transport the Fortress, I have perma-glued the four sections together. For now it, the Ordinatus, and the Ork Terrain contest entry are sitting atop the cases.
Next up is one of the minis from my old kill team/veteran IG squad. This was a squad done up with "Carapace Armor" using someone else's idea of Kroot Bits.
It worked very well! All of my snow infantry bases need to be touched up with fresher snow.
This is one of my very first kitbashes, an engineering chimera/tow truck. One of these days, I should rebuild the bridgelayer chimera that went with it.
Finally, here's the fully-repaired group of my original Menoth miniatures. I really loved the minis of this game, but HATED the ultra-competitive
atmosphere the game company was promoting at the time.
So, I've been hauling these around since 1988, when I was first introduced to Games Workshop. I really don't know why, but Nostalgia kills.
The Warlord Titan, and the two Eldar Tempests are what was leftover from my Epic-scale forces. The second Titan body came along a few years ago in some bitz.
Let's take them apart, shall we?
Bath time!
A little scan-n-print, and then there were two...
Now, since I do not have the carapace for the second/enough weapons, I'm going to have to do some work on the second one.
I don't have enough curvy-bits to cut up to match the rounded carapace, nor do I feel like hauling out the casting supplies for a one-off.
So I think I will build a 'new Warlord Titan' carapace out of plasticard, and perhaps mimic some weapons as well.
I am also debating just building these directly into a diorama, and not putting the card roundels back in. But, the feet were/are molded into the bases.
So I'd either have to build new feet (relatively easy) or work the round base into the diorama, or skip the idea entirely.
Thoughts on these two plans? What do you think I should do with the second Titan Body, and the base/diorama concept?
Sorry, the last week has been a killer, trying to catch up.
Could you use the body of the second titan as a robot in 40K? I’m out of the 40K scene really so no ideas of their proxy use, but who couldn’t use a robot buddy. Otherwise how about building him as alucius pattern titan. Square edges are easier to do and would be able to say that’s the reason he doesn’t look like his pal Fred.
Also on the Detolf shelves, how secure are the doors? We inherited grandmas cat and then got threemore . I love them, but my few pieces that I think I did well have been shoved off of their perches by these little faux rat chasers. Will the door keep shut from these cat burglars?
As for the shelves, the doors are held with magnetic clasps, and the 'handle' on the door is at the top. The gap is about 1/8th of an inch, and as a former slave-to-cats, I can say they're pretty darn cat proof, and stable enough so if they decide to jump up on them, they won't fall over, etc. I would advise, for cats and babies, to use the supplied hardware to secure them to the wall.
In the long ago days of the beginnings of Warhammer 40,000 (In the far future- there is only war!) I bought a set of those epic scale titans and specifically used them as (if I recall correctly) 28mm scale Castellan dreadnaughts/robots. I may be mistaken on the name of the class- it might be the Deredos I'm thinking of. Anyway, GW didn't make anything at the time, so we used these for 'real' WH40K, rather than 'Terror Comes to Tiny Town' .
Thanks Brian , we have a nice cabinet upstairs which my models sneak into rarely just to annoy the wife. The cats have begun perching up there too, so good call.
Man, getting a good 1:1 scale skull to work on is harder than one might think. Yeah, there's tons in Halloween stores, etc. but they're not very good quality. I may have to go to a medical supply store.
Briancj wrote: Man, getting a good 1:1 scale skull to work on is harder than one might think. Yeah, there's tons in Halloween stores, etc. but they're not very good quality. I may have to go to a medical supply store.
I work with a few people who don’t use theirs often, I’ll try and liberate one .
Wow, that's really col about the white laser printer toner! I didn't even know that was a thing. Has anything been happening with those epic titans while I have been away? I enjoy your scratch building, so my vote goes for building a carapace and weapons for it.
Past me: "Well," I thought. "I need a background for these old Epic-scale Titans and such. Oh, maybe a Gothic church. Those are available in this scale. But I'm trying not to spend MORE money on these projects. Hrm. I know, paper-craft!"
Me: " you, past me. I remember why I hate paper-craft!"
Lovely cathedral. Where did you get the background art?
Love the roundhouse and turntable. Get some grey powder on that roof to make it look appropriately worn and you'll have it! Can't wait for you to do complete detailing with figures, tools, etc on the inside of that roundhouse!

Wow Brian, that's a nice spread of Warhammer Quest. Looks like multiple expansions too? That much be hard to part with, butstinks more that there's no one to play it with
I was scared to do the math the one time I sat down and crunched the numbers on a specific 1,500 point list for a thread here asking for data. Depending on the army, you generally get 4-5 points per dollar spent. If I add up my collection, I’l probably pushing 20k+ in points, so that’s a stupid amount of money on the shelf. Of course, amassed over close to 3 decades, it’s not budget breaking.
I was tempted to get that humble bundle. Just got my first 3D printer and am playing with it. But there are so many good options for free out there, I didn’t feel compelled to shell out of that package. Plus I don’t play D&D/Pathfinder these days, and even if my curant GM decided to start something, he generally prefers to keep things in the mind’s eye, rather than breaking out the battlemat.
But that bundle did look nice, and if I was still part of my old group that mainly plays pathfinder, I’d have snapped it up.
In all honesty, I grabbed the bundle SOMEWHAT for the hope of using it, but PRIMARILY...
...so I can reverse-engineer the STL files and learn how to make these things MYSELF.
And THAT was worth the $25 I sent over.

Sadly, even the human/medium-sized minis are now (as opposed to Bones 1-3) all multi-part, so that's slowed me the hell down AND caused me to have to make a superglue run. SIGH.
It is one of life's better problems though having many minis to make and paint. Always fancied going in on the bones, don't suppose there will be any more like that. Would love to help you, bit far to go though.
Sadly I sold my old reaver a few months before the Forgeworld reaver was even displayed. , I will have to live my fourth childhood through you, I’m fully taking advantage of my third myself .
A friend of mine received a bunch of old D&D minis, we're talking Ral Partha classics here. His daughter decided she really liked four of them. I was asked if I would be up for talking with her about how she saw them, and if I would paint them for her. We chatted, I got the deets, and decided to go overboard, as I usually do for her. Since I have no kids, I get to spoil everyone else's. Fair, right? Right.
The diorama is removable, and 'hides' two boxes which contain the minis (with padding) and a third box with some 'treasure' to find.
That diorama looks great Brian, and really nicely done in more than one meaning. I expect she will treasure that
Also that's cool that you got your hands on those old Armorcast titans, how hard were they to find?

Well, they appear on ebay regularly. But, in this case, I got AMAZINGLY lucky to have found them for, basically, under $200 each. And having free cash. So I went for 'em because I always wanted them. Way more than the FW ones which came out later. These are true to the Epic/Adeptus Titanicus versions, whereas FW are 'newer' and while more detailed, lack the character of the Epic sculpts. YMMV.

Still pondering an overall paint scheme, tempting to go with blue/gold/cream but I always default to blue.
I'd like to work with the gold foil I have one the one pauldron, so any suggestions for my Titan House colour scheme? I'm open to anything other than blue, and red, as I'm trying to AVOID painting an Ad-Mech Haus. Leaning towards Purple, could also continue the Emerald Green from the diorama's Warlord Titan?
Lemme hear 'em!
Note: Due to the EPIC BACKLOG of projects, I'm going to be painting the majority of things to a tabletop standard, that looks good in a display case under the three foot rule. POWER PAINTING.

I’m looking forward to the new GW contrast paints as some of those colors are just wonderful, I think they have a purple that is pretty in line with what you got from the spray can, and if it highlights and gives definition like I’ve seen I think we will see more nonstandard marine colors out there.

Torso/Legs are basecoated with Rust-Oleum's "Oil-Rubbed Bronze", which is a DEAD LOCK for GW's "Warplock Bronze". Just sayin'.
Weapons are Rust-Oleum's "Black Stainless Steel", which is a very dark silver.
Both products are 2-in-1 primer/paint, which makes them perfect for light passes over plastic and resin.
There's also a clipboard of the perfect purple panel pieces, and the sprues contain the various handrails painted with the same silver, to be inserted into various locations, but I didn't feel like clipping off parts and noting their part # on paper. I do, however, have a pad for that (magnetic whiteboard material, printed with a grid, used for keeping track of parts when working on computers/tools/etc.)
