Gotta scrounge up some hatch parts, but otherwise: ACCEPTABLE IN THE 80'S, and that's good enough for me.

Autocannons are swappable with the volleyguns (costs the same - free) and left the roof off, because it looks like a missile rack.

Switching to little plastik mans for a while...
Ladies and Gentlebeings, your Helldivers. These are the scum of the Imperium, Penal Troopers given a suicide mission. Jump from the back of a speeding Vendetta Gunship, with nothing but a satchel charge, and a few grenades. Other convicts are given the 'mission' of making sure the satchel charges are placed, usually by protecting the mad bombers with their lives.
No, you in fact CAN'T have a 'spare weapon'. This is the Astra Militarum, boy, and it'd just be a waste. Plus, it's what the rulebook says. Yup! Take a Demolition Charge, you're up the creek without a lasgun!
"Thankfully", you can give the squad Krak Grenades! Hee hee! With the 8" range of a 5" blast template, and a BS of three, plus tossing themselves out of the back of Vendetta, these are truly 'suicide troops'.
The bombers are using Valkyrie door gunner bodies, and Space Marine bolter ammo pouches as the satchel charges. Squads are primarily ID'd by their helmets.
Jump! Fling! Pray! BOOM!

A smattering of heavy weapons teams. Each group of three will have a "Squad leader", in spite of the fact that the rules don't cover such. Why? Because I CAN.
There are more HWT's on deck, I just ran out of bases.
PROTIP:
You do not need to put two models on the HWT base, since the HWT team is a single 'model' with two wounds. It is just tradition.

17738
Post by: Briancj
The fact that they're putting in rules for a unit that is designed to destroy entire cities should really show how far GW has sunk.
I'll allow two options:
Vortex Missile: Str D, AP 1, Master-Crafted, Ignores Cover, Rending, Shred, Ordinance, Barrage, 96" Blast
Vortex Missile: Removes all units from the table, no saves of any kind allowed, ignores all special rules that would allow a model to be left on the table.
On the plus side, I don't need to spend the estimated $5-600 to buy one from FW.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I like the second option. With the following addendum.... The Ordinatus has the following special rule. "Planetary Bombardment: The destructive power of the Ordinatus is far too overwhelming for the model to actually be placed on the same table where the missile could land. Therefore, place the Ordinatus model in the furthest corner of the room from the gaming table. The blast is automatically targeted at the center of the table. Roll scatter. Any roll that is not a direct hit and that scatters more than the Ordinatu's current BS misses the table entirely. Follow the arrow on the scatter die until you come to the next table where a game is being played. Remove all models from the table with no saving throws of any kind allowed. Note: This includes terrain, dice, pop cans, etc. and applies to ANY game being played on that table... not just 30/40k."

Let's talk 2016.
First, a moment on Palladium Books, and the Robotech Kickstarter. Still waiting on Wave Two, still waiting for about half of my Kickstarter Rewards. Seriously considering dumping this on eBay for truly wacky amounts of cash. They really botched this one.
Second, a moment on GW: Really? A moving fortification for the Tau? F-U.
Thirdly, a moment on...me!
Still dealing with the mental illness daemons, which is why I don't want to commit to things like Adepticon, etc. Maybe 2017, we'll see. Fighting, fighting, always tired, rarely motivated.
I've made very good progress on de-spruing and sorting projects. I am about to sell off vast hordes of Marines, Necrons, and Ork. It makes me very sad, and it is very difficult, to sell off projects, whilesale. It tastes like failure. However, having this stuff sitting around, reminding me of everything I'm NOT going to do is even WORSE for mental stability, and getting rid of it really DOES make things better, and allows me to focus down on what really matters.
The Imperial Guard. Or, whatever they're calling it.
I have a small 40K group, which is trying toget games in, got a good game in a few weeks ago, will post a batrep soon, good pictures. I actually managed a win, so there's that.
Debating on my vast collection of terrain, I may purge it down, or donate it to the not-local-but-very-good game store, maybe for store credit. We'll see how that goes. Going to finish off pieces, and the collection of 2nd ed cardboard magic, for nostalgia purposes. Keeping the Cityfight table, because it is far, far too awesome.
Going to keep working on the Battletech stuff, see if I can find some players. And pull out.organize the massive FLEETS of X-Wing I now have, do some repaints, and try and get some action there. If I can get a once-a-month miniatures fix, I'll be pretty happy.
Boardgames! 'nuff said.
So, what to do in 2016, let's see...
Part the First - General Games:
Battletech - Paint details onto all the 'mechs, flock the bases
Robotech - Make a decision, depends on how much of a fiasco it is in getting the rest of the Kickstarter in
X-Wing - Light repaints, organization
Battlefleet Gothic - Watch with wary apprehension
BONES BONES BONES
Part the Second - 40K:
Minotaurs - Finish the Airforce, including the Thunderhawk Transporter
Imperial Guard - Finish all available parts, then fill in some blanks, possibly a new codex?
Nids - All Spore Army? Plus paint more random nids I just found in a box. They're fun to inkwash.
Everything Else - PURRRRRRRRRRRGE
Part the Third - Terrain:
Fortification Line - Build and paint what I have, acquire the remainder
River Table - Finish the other two sections, repair the bridge
Everything Else - Tidy, Paint, Organize!
Thanks to all five of you who stuck around.

No love for the little friend. So sad.
---
Against my friend Brandon, at the lovely Battle Standard game store, in Auburn, Massachusetts, I got a game of my Guard versus his Iron Hands/Sisters of the Steel Lily army.
Board, deployment. I have three Vendetta in reserve, he'll keep a group of three Land Speeders in his reserves.
We're playing a Maelstrom mission, the Adepticon card set. I have my book with me, so I get to use the IG tactical objectives. It is the Intercept the Cargo mission, there are six objectives on the board.
He wins the roll off to choose sides, and go first. He chooses to thematically defend his fortress monastery against what he claims to be heretical guardsmen.
Mind you, *I'M* not the one building Iron Hands models using tau and necron bitz, nor am I the one fielding a daemon-like creature (Celestine).
I am just dutifully following the orders sent down from high command, and taking a fortress full of HERESY away from HERETICS.
Brandon disagrees.
I point out that I brought artillery.
Game on!
---
Turn 1 (Night Fight)
At the dawn of the day, forces rumble out of the fortress, to deal with the invaders.
Brandon advances across a wide front. A lone Sisters Immolator full of melta-goodness advances into the teeth of the trio of Leman Russ Exterminators, one of which is my Warlord.
On my right flank, a Rhino rushes forwards and gets stuck in the swamp. The squad of Sisters will hover the rest of the game around a single objective marker. That entire flank will barely roll more than a '3' for difficult terrain the entire game.
Celestine LEAPS forwards!
On my turn, the Deathstrike crew amble down from their warm crew compartments, and take a look about. They will decide, eventually, to launch their missile, but first hot toddies all around.
The two Manticores open up on the lines, stripping hull points and stunning vehicle crews. The Immolator gets hit, and Celestine is put down for her nap. She will awaken, angry.
Brandon: 2VP, Brian: 0VP
Turn 2
Brandon continues his general push. His Warlord, a Techmarine with servitors, walks slowly toward the artillery, with the full intention of reaching into various crew compartments, and stealing the various ignition keys.
Celestine wakes up form her nap, jumps forward again, and fries a pile of so-called heretics, who burn. I remove 8 miniatures from the board, giving each one a little death scream.
On my turn, more firepower leaps from the Manticores, and the three russes push to their absolute forward positions, infantry using them as shields ala the movie "Fury". This tactic actually worked!
In what will be a STUNNING turn of events to my Adepticon team-mates, all three of my Vendettas arrive out of reserves, at the same time. Now, I had the Emperor's Spear formation going, but I didn't need it. I rolled two fours and a five. Drink heavily, friends.
The Venedttas annihilate Celestine, who goes down for a longer nap. Additionally, the Helldivers suicide special weapons squad not only Grav Chute Drops without incident, but manages to land all three demo charges on the Techmarine and his remaining servitors.
The Deathstrike crew break out their boxed lunches.
My Warlord issues his first and only order, which allows them to fire, and pop smoke. This will protect his turret-mounted autocannons for a turn.
This is the moment when Brandon realizes he's forgotten to deploy a couple of Rhinos. We decide to give him an additional VP for keeping them in "Tactical Reserves" in the motor pool, to preserve equipment.
Brandon: 3VP, Brian: 6VP
Turn 3
Brandon easily erases the Helldiver squad, and continues to advance on the artillery, trying to beat the clock, and stop the rain of death coming down from the corner. The surviving Melta Sister will hold up my entire center push, immune to tons of lasgun and flamer fire.
His Landspeeders arrive, and put six shots of Pure Melta ( tm) into the back of my Warlord Tank, and obliterate it.
I will continue to bombard his tanks, and start removing his two Dreadnoughts from the board, through hull-stripping. with the Warlord dead, and a second Russ immobilized, the third Russ becomes free and clear. He pivots back, and will strike down the landspeeders. Squads will start pushing toward more objectives, taking #6 (on my right side) for more points.
The other two Helldiver squads fail to land anywhere near the enemy, and pitch their charges out in desperate attempts to do anything, before being erased by bolter drills. They nick a few Marines.
Brandon: 4VP, Brian: 8VP
Turn 4
Brandon will struggle, regretfully, all game with troops just not being able to get out of the swamp.
He easily removes the two remaining Helldiver Squads, but can't remove the immobilized Russ, or get successful shots onto the Artillery, as his Predators have either lost their primary guns, or are the single autocannon variants, and my magic trees are jumping in front of the shots.
Miracle Mary downs a Vendetta with a 6-6-6 (heh) set of rolls.
I bring in vendettas from ongoing reserves, dropping into hover or zooming off, doing more damage to tanks, and removing the last dread. My remaining squads continue to take objectives, claiming the center of the table for King of the Hill, as well as denying another objective to be claimed.
It is at this point that we remember that anyone's numbered objective cards can be claimed by either side. AND that we forgot to roll Warlord traits. Hooray, US.
BOTH manticores manage to get off salvo #4, and the Deathstrike crew, perhaps seeing the empty launch rails of their compatriots, decide 'what the hell', and launch their strike as well. This final artilly bombardment will remove Brandon's forces on my right flank.
The rest of my infantry move forward to attempt to counter-claim objectives, and will inevitably be scythed down like wheat.
Brandon: 5VP, Brian: 9VP
Turn 5
This is pretty much mopup, the turns go so quickly, I forget to take pictures.
I gain an additional VP in turn 5, as Brandon tries to push figures into my backfield.
Brandon: 5VP, Brian 10VP
Turn 6
At this point, Brandon is down to a few marines, and a couple of sisters. His final push fails to break the line, but he does pick up some VPs due to last turn card draws.
I push men and equipment onto final objectives.
---
Final Tally:
Brandon: 8VP (Slay the Warlord)
Brian: 12VP (First Blood, Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker)
A well fought game by Brandon, who recovered from some early bad dice rolls, and stuck with it. He is new this this version of the game, and much of the game was discussing tactics, and such.
An enjoyable day!
Game notes:
Brandon forgot that I have an air force, and failed to bring anything that could really handle knocking things out of the sky. He gamely went forward, anyways.
Hard for me to pick an MVP. All the units did what they needed to do, and I do think that I like the Heavy 4 Autocannon Russ, with three heavy bolters.
Zero of the game: Imperial Guard Orders. There just wasn't anything to do with them, aside from an occasional 'run better' order. However, the Tank Commander order of "Shoot and Shroud" definitely proved its value. Admittedly, I did not have a lot of "boots on the ground", but the fact that orders take effect before the normal turn sequence means I have to put troops in position the previous turn, and pray something survives to be able to TAKE an order, next turn.

It's CONTEST TIME:
I need a proper name for this tank. My guard army is lightly WWII soviet-themed, but I'm open to all ideas. "Fury" is right out, so is "Easy 8". No using movie tanks, here!
Winner gets a standard Ziploc brand "Sandwich" bag crammed full of bitz.
Contest ends in one week, 11:59pm, Sunday, Eastern US time.

Do you realize how many people who now play 40K were BORN after this thing was invented?
--
A harder project that I initially imagined. I have to invent, wholesale, the tank's interior. And there's not a lot of working room in here. I'm also going to have to cut holes in various bulkheads, to create the interior space that exists. For example, most tanks store their ammunition inside the left and right tread sponsons.
Additionally, as if that wasn't enough, the tank's turret is way, WAY too small. There's almost no way one could actually get out of the top hatch, if there's an actual main cannon breach inside the turret.
Good thing I re-organized my styrene supplies!

So, here's tonight's progress. Working out how to punch holes through the sponsons, as well as how the heavy bolters would be operated. If I was thinking ahead, I'd have carved the rotational cylinder apart, making it into a gun shield, as in the real world. A little late for that, unless I steal a sponson from my OTHER '94 vintage Leman Russ. Which may happen.
The small box is behind the "Maintenance hatch", which I've converted into a tool box. As a note, some tanks had external communications sets, so the infantry outside could talk to the tank commander inside.
FYI, this will be a Leman Russ Vanquisher, with three hull heavy bolters, and a pintle heavy stubber.
--B.
Sponson parts:
Sponson exterior:
Sponson interior:
Unlike previous projects, this Russ will come apart (magnets) to be able to show off all the interior work. At a minimum, the top hull will detach from the bottom.
Enjoy!

PS: Yes, all muzzles and whatnots will be drilled out.

I'm not sure. I may go retro, as I have all the decals, and a flag. But I may go hyper-detailed, and add it to my Winter Guard as part of my Vanquisher Squadron.

Added the extended barrel, and built the gun elevation cylinders, and barrel breach.
There's no very little room in this beast, and I'm going to need to curve some styrene for the turret rotation ring. Coming along. My workbench is covered in Russ Parts ( tm), as I test-fit various designs and such.
Things I am thinking about:
Ammo storage - main gun and secondaries
Driver and gunners - positions and controls
Seats.
The engine itself.
Watching a lot of "Fury", because it shows how people moved around in the tank, and how the commander's cupola works. Very enlightening.

Post by: Briancj
Turret interior completed. Ammo storage for the heavy stubber, barrel breach, barrel elevation cylinders, the tank's main radio.
Exterior, hatch open, and a new mount fabricated for a 'modern' heavy stubber, a conceit for being able to use this tank in current 40K games, instead of the kit's storm bolter.
Need to sand and smooth our the barrel, but progress is made. Also fabricated a ring/shroud, which will have further edits as I design the interior of the main body.
Enjoy!

So, got in a good game of Necromuda with my friend Dave. A lot of learning was done, and it was an enjoyable afternoon!
The table:
We rolled off, he chose the side and I won the toss to go first.
He chose to deploy across his side of the board, which allowed me to do a refused flank maneuver, and try and focus my amazingly short-ranged firepower. I left a small group of a heavy flamer and two acolytes up the middle, to slow down his flanking forces trying to attempt any encirclement.
My forces 'rush' forward along a board edge, trying to hug whatever cover is available. Dave's heavy-with-a-missile-launcher climbs up to a vantage point, and his eventual missile shot would do tremendous damage, but too late in the game, as I was forcing bottle rolls starting a few turns previous.
I managed to get two heavy flamer shots off in this game, and they are fairly brutal. My gang got bunched up trying to push into the building he occupied, but I was eventually able to knock his forces down, and gain access to whatever technology was within!
In the middle, I was able to roast his leader, but at the cost of everyone else over there. But trying up half his gang with a quarter of mine was well worth it.
I know that a lack of long range firepower is going to hurt in this campaign, so I have to hope for lots of cover, good tables, and some interesting rolls on the trading post tables! On the plus side, my gang rating is quite low at start (can't hire any 'hired guns'), so I should gain some good XP, and be able to promote some novices, quickly!
The former launch facility is mine!

Wellll, I got another battle in...which is amazing!
My opponents, Brady and Brandon. Brady's a nice Necron player, doesn't push the limits. Brandon's a Necron-tainted Iron Hands player, who is new to 7th, and had fond memories of 3rd.
I brought an incredibly silly IG list. Let's begin.
We rolled the perfect mission for my army's silliness level. Hammer and Anvil, 'The Relic'. I can't POSSIBLY win. But I can provide a very good time.
1500 Points.
My army:
Fortress of Redemption with the Krakstorm Upgrade
2x Command Squad, Kurov's Aquila (everyone in the fort has preferred enemy, effectively), 2x Master of Ordinance
2x Vet Squad, grenade launchers (the fort is now nothing but BS4)
2x Hellhounds
2x Wyverns
annnnd...
A Baneblade.
I roll my Warlord Trait, Tactical Genius. I put the hellhounds and the 'blade into Outflanking reserve. How they didn't hear the Baneblade coming, I'll never know.
I have ZERO ability to take and hold the Relic. Or anything else, for that matter. I brought an army to team up with someone else at 750 or provide an epic amount of firepower to bomb the heck out of someone.
Their Army:
Brandon brought a techmarine on a bike, a couple of squads in Rhinos, and a Vanguard squad with TH/ SS.
Brady had 3 Wraiths, 3 Destroyers, a squad of Warriors, a squad of Immortals, a Ghost Ark, and a Command Barge with his lord.
Necrons take the Warlord, and gain the Cityfight trait, bonus cover and move through cover (ruins). Perfect!
PROTIP: The new Reanimation Protocols are disturbing. a 5+ super feel-no-pain save.
This is my entire starting position:
And here's their lineup:
Uneasy Allies.
They advance quickly to the Relic, but even with move through cover, it'll take a couple of rounds to get to it in the building. Meanwhile, I start the orbital bombardment, smashing buildings, Marines and Necrons. The barge goes down early, along with both Rhinos. Wraiths take a beating, but Brady is rolling saves like a champ.
And then the Outflanking occurs.
The Techmarine survives long enough to plasma-and-beatstick one Hellhound into scrap for the Machine God. This is where I forget linebreaker.
The Necrons turn around, and in two turns glance the 'blade to component particles, which predictably explode. The lone Necron Warrior survives the apocalyptic blast, and will get a new paint job to show his status as 'the one'.
Here, we see Brandon very excited to receive a beating.
The Vanguard vets arrive, and proceed to knock on the door. The vets answer the door with a pile of lasguns and krak grenades, killing two of the five. the remaining members would jump up to the battlements, force the hatch open, and return the grenades. Heavy hand to hand combat ensues, but the vets manage to kill one, and hold their ground inside the bunker.
Knock, knock!
The wraiths grab the relic, but are whittled down to a single wraith. Things are very, very tight as Brandon moves some forces in to try and pick up the Relic, should it be dropped. To their credit, they really focused on the Mission, and this carried they day for them. The command barge delivers the final blow.
At the end, they had a couple of Vanguard Veterans and a couple of Marines on foot, a couple of Immortals, a couple of Destroyers, one Warrior, and one Wraith-with-a-relic.
Everyone had a ton of fun, and they really enjoyed the thematic battle of having to retrieve the relic under massive city-leveling bombardment.
Necron/Marines: 3VP (The Relic)
Imperial Guard: 2VP (Slay the Warlord, First Blood)

As I.. though the proof will be once we get to playing it. For us who have been there from the start, It's once again learning another way to play 40k. We often get the rules mixed up form edition to edition.
From first impressions it's cleaner, but is it capable of being balanced in match play.
Just waiting on the launch date ( and the cost for all the books - I have quite a few armies)

But aren't the hardback books compendiums of the Indexes?

All I know is that there's 5 indexes. Two Imperial, one Chaos, two Xenos. And a new "Black Book" core rulebook.

Vendettas are in the FW index, It will have 6 Lascannons (yay) but -1 to hit from moving, (boo) Hover mode will be useful however.

Aha! Thanks Randy! It makes sense I guess, since the hardpoint-mounted lascannons were always FW or converted.

That's debatable.

Life, as we know, is full of wants and sacrifice. For example, I wanted an Aquila Lander. I consider it to be one of Forge World's greatest works of art. Sadly, they pulled it right around the time of the Dark Angels 7th edition codex.
So, after trying to find one through normal channels, I looked for options. The tutorial for turning the crashed lander into a non-crashed one didn't really float my boat. So, I turned to other means. I have no guilt, because the object was 100% OOP, and unavailable on the secondary market.
Regretfully, the canopies were total arse, obscuring the amazing detail of the pilot and observation chambers. I tried an SoB turret glass, but it was way too small.
So I sacrificed parts of a crashed Aquila Lander, as seen below:

Heh. No, I just don't have any place to play, so motivation is just GONE. Plus, I've been dealing with depression (mostly successfully), and "real life".
Now that I have a foundation under my feet again, it is time to try and get back into the things I truly enjoy.
I could use all the support I can get.

You've got it Brian! Very excited to see you get that big boy together!
I know you're not playing much at the moment... but my thoughts on knight load-outs having played them quite a bit...
The Crusader is probably the best build at the moment. Because of the utility of "stomp", the knight doesn't really need any dedicated CC weapon to be effective. As a result, the knight variation with the sword and fist is probably the worst build at the moment.
The gatling gun, battle cannon and meltathingy are all quite viable. I'm really liking the melta myself. I think the carapace missile rack is a better choice than the autocannon.
Obviously you should build what inspires you, but I thought I'd volunteer a bit of tactical analysis in case you think you might actually get a chance to play.
17738
Post by: Briancj
Thank you, it is most appreciated! I was reading over the codex, and re-reading the main rule-book, and that is what really "got" me. All those CC weapons, and...you can use one of them at a time. Not very "Epic", let me tell you!
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Agreed. Ramos made me one of the 2cc knights (sword and fist) and right now he's just sitting on the shelf. :/
That being said... my FW knight lancer is a god.... but you have to put him in the right circumstances to be effective.

Forced static poses can suck my left nut.
First, some leg surgery:
Now, we can pose this a little better. Practice your lunges!
Side note. This model was designed to have some form of interior. Note the mounting points inside the sub-assembly.
A little subtle lighting for this one. Noch brand pre-wired surface mount led, made for model railroad lighting.
A little poster tack, and we strike a pose!

Really? You think I'm going to lie here and take your non-swappable weapon choices, GW? AU CONTRAIRE!
First, we hacksaw off the 'mushroom' end, leaving a straight cylinder.
Then, we add a magnet. I'm using magnets only on the two 'shoulders', and washers/nuts everywhere else. I'm cheap.
I also magnetized the 'wrist' joint of the [pugnus tonitrua], so I can pose the thing even more.
Here's the collection of shoulders and CC options.
I should find my little light-box.

Post by: Briancj
Look! Guns!
I used plastruct tubing, instead of magnets, to allow me to swap the two gun barrels. Magnets and nutz to swap the 'ammo' chambers. I used the internal magma cylinder to fill the rear of the chamber, and removed some tubing. Finally, I glued the heavy stubber ammo box to the gunshield.
Now, two poses to show what we can do, for all that extra work:
"Don't move! There's something on your Rhino!"
Senpai has noticed you. That wasn't your best plan.
I hope this mini-tutorial has been helpful. ^_^

When I'm "In the lane", my output is...significant. I can visualize what I want to do with a lot of clarity. For example, I've never built one of these Knight kits before, and had barely looked at the sprues before boxing them away about five months ago.

Excellent progress sir, definitely making the most of the kit.
And I am afraid you will have to go back in the kiddies pool, once the offspring start kicking about, unfortunately they look at you very strange if you play about to much.
P.S. I know your pain with the depression bud, seems to be something we as a community struggle with. If you need me just shout bud, right here, most of the time in fact.

Been working on an entry for the 25th (!) LOER competition. Because I needed to purge more bitz.
The difficulty, of course, is that I donated all my terrain-bitz to the game store run by my friend.
Thankfully, I found my ork box, and I had stashed stuff in there. FOR THE FUTURE.

Thanks for all the kind words!
Here is your thought for the day:
Based on movement speeds of the various unit types, the average game of Warhammer 40k (5 turns or so) represents, at best, 2 to 3 minutes of "real time".
Think about THAT the next time your game drags out.
