Zywus wrote: Can't it just be that case that it's cheaper if you pre-order?
It's common to offer perks to enthuse people to pre-order stuff. Of course it's more effective if you actually tell people that the price will be higher in normal retail, but this is GW after all, so...
And if they didn't say up front that it was going to be a higher price when it's in shops this Saturday, they'd be potentially be open to all kinds of litigation.
How? Raising the price on something is courtworthy now, is it?
False advertising is.
If you go in to purchase a set for the listed price that the preorders are at(which has no mention of it being a "preorder exclusive price" or any other garbage) and it instead is listed for more?
That's false advertising and companies have gotten in trouble for it.
Preorders being a cheaper price is pretty common practice.
For independents, maybe. But independents usually make it clear that it is a preorder price.
And that's the point I'm trying to make and you're seeming to fail to grasp. Deceptive advertising, such as "Buy X for $50! In stores next Saturday!", can get you in trouble.
How is it deceptive? The put the price on the website, people bought it at that price. They put another price in WD later and that's that. Wheres the deception? Its probably a misprint with no intent to deceive behind it, which is the point I'm making that you don't seem to be grasping.
On the topic of boxed characters being sold separately, and the HH:BaC box in particular:
As both characters share a sprue, I think the odds of them being packaged and sold individually are quite low. So while I think the odds of the units/dread getting their own boxes are quite high, if you want the characters, this is probably the only place.
I would imagine, but this is pure speculation, that since they are on the same sprue they will be released together ala forgeworld's command group set things they do. This could be the MkIV Commanders set or somesuch thing. But this is more speculation than BoLS so I shall leave this at that. But it seems unlikely for them to re-release everything except one sprue considering the work that will have gone into it.

Blame, just got my grubby little mitts on 3 boxes. Enjoying the new toy smell. Nice quality sets and a good haul for the price i paid. I'm looking forward to settling down with this little lot over the winter months.
Necros wrote: Just spray em gold and dip em in minwax. All done!
Wait, explain the Minwax statement. Is this an effective way of dealing miniatures and which type of Minwax?
I still can't decide if I want this game or not. I don't really want to start a new Marines army and none of the stuff in this one is something I really need it want for my existing armies.
Hopefully that Contemptor comes out separately. I would buy two.
It's the "dip" method, I did a whole TK army with that a while back and it came out great.
Basically, you use wood stain called Minwax Polyshades (I guess any brand with polyurethane added will work?). Pick a good color that you think will work good for your shade. Paint your mini in basic solid colors, then dunk it in the can of stain and shake off the excess (preferably outside so you don't get yelled at), then just let it dry overnight. The next morning you have a nicely shaded mini. It will be super glossy though, but if you spray it with a matte varnish after that you should be fine.
It's messy but it works good for getting a big army painted up kinda fast. You should be able to find more info and examples if you search in the painting forums

Thanks for the info! If I was going to shotgun out a big army of Space Marines, Necrons, or Eldar, I would probably do this. Otherwise, I like finer control. Also doesn't really help on an existing army very much. Maybe if I bought this set to start HH Imperial Fists. Yellow is such a pain to work with.
GW don't do that much limited edition, they generally do 'while stocks last'. That gives the impression something has limited availability without legally preventing them from releasing it again later.
I'm pleased as punch, I don't want the minis being limited edition. I want the new assassins, the broodlord that came with that boxed set etc all available. In case I want to buy them...
This. I abhor "limited edition" nonsense generally(I've never understood people who can only find value in things that other people don't have), but even moreso when it's unnecessary artificial scarcity. These are mass-produced plastic, there's no reason they shouldn't be available for everyone who wants them.

You can use Army Painter quickshade, which won't leave you with the ultraglossy finish, and one jar will essentially last you an army. But you can also just use a big brush and apply it. The amount of actual time you save is pretty tiny if you're talking about 30 minis. It's the difference between 5 seconds and 30 seconds per model
AP tinted primers are pretty bulletproof, too, so if you just use AP colored primer and quickshade, I wouldn't bother with varnish.
Army painter quickshade is amazing and much, much better than minwax. I've done several hundred figures with it, by brushing it on with a large soft brush.
mikhaila wrote: Army painter quickshade is amazing and much, much better than minwax. I've done several hundred figures with it, by brushing it on with a large soft brush.
Does it come in blue? Because if so, that would probably drastically cut down my Crimson Fists painting time. I have a big addition to my army coming, and if I could save on time that would be great.
Even if there isn't blue, this would still work great for a new army (such as a White Scars army I am considering).
Ghaz wrote: Maybe we'll finally see the Reclusiam Command Squad Chaplain sold separately?
I'd rather they just make a better one.
Just take the Interrogator-Chaplain and file off all of the DA markings. That is what I am considering. I doubt the RCS Chaplain will see separate release anyway, since he is still available, unlike Karlaen or the SFU Terminator Captain.
Kanluwen wrote: Well, the RCS Chaplain also has an integral base rather than a piece of rubble attached to his foot or something of that nature.
True, but that isn't even the norm for Clampacks (or the BaC characters, to bring this around to the thread topic) anymore. Hopefully they will release the PA character from the BaC separately, only he and the Contemptors are really desirable to me. He would look quite nice in black with a pair of red fists (with some dark blue pauldrons), if I say so myself.
Yeah I pretty much only use Army Painter paints now, especially the sprays. except for the occasional color I need that they don't have. I really do love the new GW sigmarine gold foundation color. I always had to use a yellowy color first and then coat it with gold cuz it was too transparent before.
I haven't gotten any of the cans of AP shade though, but I use the dropper versions. I never got the other shades because they're oil based and I'm too lazy to go buy a $4 can of turpentine.
On that note, gonna need a new can of bone color spray to basecoat my new 30k marines
according to the white dwarf vistions it's listing the new set for $220CAD instead of the current $180CAD, with a simular price raise across the board for all the curencies.
Is this comfirmation the price will go up was pre-orders are over for the set?

No, they print visions far ahead, and dropped the price. For now at least, it's the lower price. The next printing will be around the end of the year.

It worked. He sold it, didn't he? In all seriousness, store owners aren't required to like/use every product they sell or support. I can't really stand MTG or any CCG but if I owned a store you'd better believe that I'd stock them and host a game night.

I am not. If I'm purprosefully setting asside money to get a product that is "limited" only to find out it's not, I feel suckered. I'm also far less likely to purchase anything in this vein from now on.
Thank goodness there's none of that being pulled in the Betrayal at Calth.
The video is decent, and the game looks... interesting. Mission-driven gameplay, cards, the hex-based movement and the dice mechanics look decent, but I'm not sure about the unit-based gameplay but with individual model stats. It works fine in 40k, as a complex wargame, and I like it there, but here, it seems that it's possibly just unnecessary complication...
I dont play 40k but I do read the Horus Heresy series. I am on the 11th book and now dont think I can go any longer without throwing my hat into the ring
Very high production values on all the contents. The minis are excellent - crisp details and plenty of options for the Tac and Termi squads. The characters really are very nice. Even the Contemptor looks better in person.
In case people are wondering how I got this today, remember that due to time zone differences, New Zealand exists in the future!
It's a bit of a tight fit with all those sprues, but it's a great deal and everything in it is of a great, high quality.
Well, except for the writing.
It's obvious from reading the main rule / fluff book that while Forge World provided the style along with some of their gorgeous art (rest taken from BL publications of course), the writing is very obviously done by GW, especially when compared to FW's Horus Heresy books. While it still does the job, it's perhaps a bit less, adult oriented and a bit more punchy?
But yes, when I got my box I got a good vibe from it, there's something about that box art that really reminds me of older versions.
Daft question, but the models are pretty devoid of Legion markings so you could paint them as two entirely seperate Legions from the WB and UM and still play the actual game?
notprop wrote: Are the tactical cards legion specific or Loyal vs Traitor this allowing other legions to be represented by the original box contents?
No a biggie but if you painted the minis as Ravens/Wolves/ANOther and had Ultramarine cards I can see that grating some people.
From the gameplay video, there were definitely two different styles on show (the Ultras seems to have cards revolving around command and morale, while the WB were based on forbidden tech or warp trickery to avoid damage or do extra damage), but I saw nothing absolutely specific. The Chaos cards seem like they'd work for any Legion actively worshipping Chaos, while the Loyalist cards seem to work as a nice alternative to that without being specific. Things like planting a standard (morale boost), vox communication (extra Action Point) and such could really apply to anyone.
FLGS didn't get in the Skitarii maniple that I wanted, so I had to fight of the urge to get a third Calth box instead. I'll hold off until I paint up my Ultramarines first. Will need 3 more packs of UM upgrade sprues though.

My understanding is that we won't see the Skitarii Battle Maniple, the Cult Mechanicus Elimination Maniple, or the Space Marine Battle Demi-Company until at least the 28th.

I didn't see anything obvious when I passed mine today,
wonder if it's limited to some stores only as a test of how well it might work if rolled out (of it it's an option available to managers but taken off their bottom line so not all are going to do it)?
So can I retroactively demand £30 from GW from about 5 years ago when I got several friends to buy AOBR... And somewhat ironically ended up with buying/trading for the Space Marine half from 2 out of 3 of them!
In all seriousness, though, that's a pretty neat idea. Plastic HH, Specialist Games revival and now a sort of special offer within about a week... has GW been infiltrated?
Can anyone with the set tell me what the largest force the WB require for any given mission in the book? I am looking to paint my set as one force when I get it, but I'm considering picking up a small opposition force for the board game itself, what would I need for that to cover the WB side?

Missions 4 and 6 require 2 legion squads, Kurtha Sedd and sor gharax.
There is an extra mission in white dwarf 94 which requires the above plus 'reinforcements from a second box.
Alex C wrote: I wonder if James Hewitt is having any influence in this recent attempt to grow/engage/pander to the community?
I don't know how involved he is with the rules side of things, but there are definitely elements of Deadzone on how this game is designed. The hex-based movement, the Action Points (not DZ-specific, of course, but they are there), rolling successes vs successes and such definitely called it to mind, to me at least. The game itself does look pretty fun, actually.

Well, I have a CSM Lord, Chaplain and Helbrute with nothing to do (and Word Bearers, no less), so all I need is a couple of CSM squads... Coolio, might have to do that at some point.

Myheremes are usually pretty speedy, so it should only be 2-3 days unless they were sent via the slowest/cheapest possible option.
I say that after they have just totally fethed up a delivery I was supposed to be getting, but other than that one incident they're effective couriers.
If your desperate to get your delivery from Hermes then your best result will be to stand in the garden so you can instantly react to its delivery when the launch it over your fence for a moving delivery van.
Only DPD rate lower in my books, that's because they like to park at the end of the road an kick it all the way OP the road, then they drop kick it over the fence.

I found out the other day that I had enough loyalty "XP" at my other FLGS to get a $125 store credit, so I got that fifth set I was strongly contemplating for a whopping $25 plus tax.
And that after the first four were gotten for 20% off.

Yep, its the same as the lets say Dark Vengeance, but for me within the whole package its a bit of a let down. I guess mainly because it looks like its been stylised after the FWHH books so I was expecting a bit more in terms of fluff (lets face it the rules are simple it probably only really warranted a quick reference sheet).
But ultimately, for me, its a minor niggle in what is a great package.

Oh gods, I've just been thinking in terms of building a nice, big core for my Alpha Legion, and not even considered what it'll all make, points wise, even before I fill the army out with other units.

Way over 2000. Remember the one I picked up today for $25 was my fifth box. When I said "a nice, big core...", I did mean BIG.
But, I do like the idea of converting one of my many chaplains into a stand in for Alpharius until FW gets to him.
Use all of the Termie praetors and make another squad of terminators or Lythaen's... Then make 3 of the Chaplains into a bodyguard for Alpharius... or Omegon... I dont remember which

Neat ideas. I have other notions of what I"m doing with some bits, though. Not EVERY bit of the boxes is going to AL.
For instance, one squad of Cataphracts are going to my Deathwing army. So is one Contemptor. Another Contemptor is going to my 40k Salamanders, or perhaps to LotD if I fancy that instead.
It's the tacs that are all spoken for as AL.
4 20 man tac blobs
1 ML squad
1 HB squad
1 of Headhunters
1 Veteran squad
1 each tactical support squad of flamers, melta, and plasma
Well, looks like South Korea is sold out of BaC!! Our (one and only) flgs ordered in excess of the 70 copies and is totally sold out as of a few days ago on the pre-orders.
Watch, they balance this out by giving their entire product range a 10% price increase. I wish I had a friend to introduce to the game. No one really needs the contents of any of the new starters sets either. It does make not getting the BaC boxed set a little difficult though.

Battle of Calth does not apply.
It's Dark Vengeance and Age of Sigmar only.
Ah. So no real loss for me, then. I guess if I wanted to start a Chaos army, I could get DV.

Weathering is one way you can make it more interesting. Things like oil washes and stuff. Plus they have like a brassy coloured trim and the yellow and black hazard stripes if you're into that and black details, they're no less varied to paint than most of the other legions.

Someone had made a fake flyer that said Squats were coming back, but it also had things like a 80% price cut and swearing in the flyer so it was clearly a fake.

I’ve already got the HQs and the dread assembled and primed. Working on the tacticals now. It’s been a while since I’ve had this much fun putting stuff together.
Game looks like it should be fun to play as well. One thing that was troubling me was if I should bother making sure I had “optimal” gear modeled for if I played the actual game. But it looks like they did a decent job keeping everything balanced. Shocking. So I’m just building what fits for 30/40k
Just to warn you guys, some of the weapon packs - namely, the heavy flamer, plasma gun and volkite charger packs - are all listed as unavailable. This could possibly mean that GW will be producing their own special weapon sets. Orrrrr it could mean that if you want some legion support squads, buy them now.
Samurai I hear you! I'm waiting to order my DA packs for when they release the their book. I'm hoping for lots of HQ/Elite models. I don't know how I'm going to paint them yet, hopefully the book will have some alternate 30k paint schemes.

Have fun putting those 5 (it is 5, right?) boxes together. Are you going to all paint them up as the same Legion or as several different ones?
The bulk of that (all of the tacticals, two or more of the terminators, some of the characters, and three of the Contemptors) are going to be Alpha Legion.
One squad of Cataphractii to my Deathwing. One Contemptor to my 40k Salamaders. I'll find something to do with leftover characters and assorted leftover termies.
I already have a FW preheresy Salamanders army in work.

Cool. My DA have always been black with markings per the Rogue Trader book. GW got a big FU from me when they changed the color to green.

With all that straight silver it seems like itd be really hard to make them actually come out nicely and not... super super bland Thoughts? The alternative is Emperors Children
About to start painting up mine as Iron Warriors.
I've got about 8k of Necrons that are mostly gun metal. Its not so bad really. Its no less exciting as any other color to be honest.
After putting on the silver, use some Nuln Oil wash, and then edge highlight in silver again.
Then pick some Forge World Weathering Powders to add corrosion/rust around the legs/feet. Maybe dirt and mud, as they are the "sapper" legion.
