oh and I'm really stressy today.
it might be summer holdays, but I have three lots of coursework to do when I get back, start GCSE's properly and I have braces as of today, meaning my mouth feels like vik's tank has ran over it.
so need some cheering up.
I remember back when I had braces... fun times, especially when the orthodontist would tighten them a bit, and then there would be no eating of tough foods for a day or two...
Anyway, I should hope you git to feelin' better, Vik, soz as I can see more of yer work sooner while the sun burns brightly outside.
well braces would have been a blessing for me teeth back then... unfortunatly my parents weren´t in for that nice treatment for me... thats why i have a more austin powers related smile...no pun...
but shrike you don´t suppose me to try to cheer you up for real do you? not when you say by yourself that you have become someone to look now like:
or
you really have to see braces as the perfect excuse for all the things you don´t want atm... "no mum, can´t do, those veggies always get stuck something cruel in my braces...better eat some soft flakes or some nice sweets instead..."
or
"no mom, can´t do that and bring the gabage out of the house...my heads aching like blazes for these wonderful/damend/ notneeded/ notwanted ( delete whatever is inapropriated...) braces...!"
and so on and on...
braces are your option to get back at your parents... they done it with their best intentions but they do carry the seed of guilt with them that this might be hurtful to ye....
sorry not really there with betterment so updates i am not capable of atm...bear with me some few days and i might be as good as new...hopefully...
as for mauling a teen for cool minis...really? this would cause around here at this board some erious bad concioussnesses? i´ve read that some have even stolen their minis here...and boast about it... wont name names but some are majorly known....all i´m sayin`^^

sweets? Not with these braces.
vik, did you steal those praetorians? Did you?
nope....stealin`is one of the few capital offences i only would ever commit if it was about some plenty billion bucks worth of.... otherwise i think petty theft is what it is called petty...as in sorry...by the way... my illness has been keeping me far longer away fromm dakka than i had thought... but i am now on the path of betterment so i hope i will get my hobbymusles flexing again... cross fingers for me for achieving that^^

According to IG rules and regs, stealing is punishable by death by hanging. Also, all soldiers that become infected must be quarantined! failure to report to the Chiurgeon and go through this is also punishable via death by flamer.
Shrike, you are charged with theft of melodies!
Vik is charged with passing contagion! both of you to hanged and burned simultaneously! Have a nice day,,,,,your Kommissar.
rofl...shaso...i am smelly already enough as is so a burnt flavor to me is something i might be just inclined to spare the humans around me...for now...
cool shrike...i think i have to print that out and hang it on a trophy place at the walll to my desk...thats quite a cool adaption^^ that would be a cool think to have it played out by the allfathers of rock^^

What makes you think you were part of this? If you like to, we can have you joing Vik and Shrike in peeling potatoes, and running the perimeter.
LOL! back in the 1980s, Germans got Beer with their field rations, I guess they took it all away, and yeah, stinky bud, I traded those stamps for cash so I could get the local German brew!
so long as it is not either colone beer (kölsch) or bayuvarian beer all is good... as these are more something to do with lemonade then beer^^ and how things are working around hee it seems we have to run now all three... wonder who else has to hop along when sarge again gets a nasty twist in his side...
hey chibi now i wanna see some IG shaped chips... maybe to go with sme Tau fishheads?^^ that´d be a nourishing meal^^... hopefully tomorrow will be a day where i get my hobby gears back in line... if so then an update will be the minimum you can expect^^

or the... less sophisticated way of explaining it:
vik chats off-topic nonsensical gibberish, gets away with it because he is an anathema to any and all forms of order, and might occasionally do something that the title says.
blimey, i am spotted yet again...nowhere to run and hide so i just stay... `m afraid no updates... couldn´t get in gear but i have plans underway that will set this mere blog of gibberish soon on it´s needed path of righteous modelng...maybe even painting^^
LOL! I think that since America is a stew of the rest of the world's population, that potatoes are something that find their ways into a lot of dinners, Pasta as well.
They hardly address foods in 40k, except the Cain novels, where it seems he enjoys the rich banquets the Lord General sets.

The dead can be reprocessed into protein. As far as I am aware there are many forgeworlds and hiveworlds where this is done. Can't quote a citation off the top of my head though
i think someone mentioned it in the hive discussion on neil101 ´s thread... i think you summed it up quite well silverMK2
well the thing with 40k is chibi the more you know of each faction the more they all look like the same evil barstools...so in a way the nids are the new empire^^
is the saying sitting in a glashouse also working in english?^^ i should have made something worthwhile long ago too^^ to let other feast upon...but well... sometimes i seem only capable of gibberish and nothing productive....
Ah, "corpse-starch rations" was one food item for the masses, nothing fancy, and "Soylens Viridiens" is another, also soybean based protein bars for the IG. Real food for the wealthy.
Well, in the Army, I started with getting C-Rations(canned) and moved to the very first MRE(Meals Ready to Eat) in pouches. Was never 100% sure where the meat portions came from!
urgh...at least we had proper cooked meals... only when on training action we sometimes got nato food...packed and dried and so on food that could probably survive nuclear bombardment... i particulary remember the cookies...and the choclate inside... one was that you don´t need a lavatory in the near future and the other was a meal of last resort...so dry you could seal tankhides^^
but when at the base the food was mostly quite nurishing and good tasting... in fact during my service time i gained about 10kg and i don´t think it was all muscles^^ as there wasn´t that much heavy lifting and marching involved^^

Oh we had cooks making regular meals too, but the rations for being out in combat were "memorable" Plenty of heavy lifting for us! Cable mass bundles are very heavy.

that is technically forbidden by law, but it is done illegally in the more war-torn and under nourished planets.
there was a gaunt's ghosts book, his last command, in which a few cooks were processing dead guardsmen and feeding a regiment, shortly before being killed by Gaunt and another commissar.
Ah yes, that is bad form, cooking your fallen comrades.
Corpse starch rations are processed from those that sign a waiver, after all, for an idea as to how beuracrcized the Imperium is, I recommend the movie "Brazil"
going on holiday tomorrow for a week, back for a week, then off again.
Got an estimate on how to fix/price of repairing my laptop, but it'll take a while to save up, at least 2 months.
I'll try to get on every day or so to check up on this thread, my threads and the minecraft thread to see what's happening and reply as needed.
oki guys...i am back...not for good but anyways^^... got bitten by a tick and now suffer from something called lyme desease...i am under medication but the last days where pretty crappy to say the least...got quite some nasty symptoms that got me dragged down...hopefully i will now get better soon...and i promise to you that i will finish some of tha mentioned projects... and i swear that i haven´t thought about any new projects for a long time...and one i get better i am really ithcy to paint!
LOL yep sometimes i have to really think the lord must have been mad...well sitting all day long on his big cloud up in the sky all by him self...he must have been pretty lonley and sad...guess this is why so many of his creations are internaly flawed...and...should have burned this tick with holy flames...but now i have to keep my mouth shut lest not someone thinks up a clever plan to roast lil ol me...^^
yep, thank mate...to make matters even more worse or funny...the doc even took pics of my chest and back, as she said: this is so seldom grownups have so many marks in the course of this desease that you are a very interresting sample that has to be recorded for science...i felt so akward...
Vik Von Domm, is now a WSSSI (World Site of Special Scientifi Interest.
That means you are now a national treasure and should be protected by all the resources of your government
of that i was quite sure a loooong time... but it seems now that other might think so too^^...
at shaso...i think i got bitten only once.... kids normally grow many spots...grownups only one...but me...i am so bloddy special i got lots...and big ones at that too...gosh i am sooooo proud...not...^^
Hmmm, well glad they caught it early enough to avoid the truly ugly symptoms! Can't have you black out while painting or working a knife on a conversion now can we?

They will want your body for science now Vik First tickled, then pickled.
Ouch! You have been having a rough ride recently vik. Maybe we should isolate you in a giant steam-driven iron lung like her majesty, keep you nice and safe
And I'll echo shaso's relief that they caught it early, rest easy vik.
thanks mate...an iron lung i am strictly against... would keep me from doing any actual work (not that i am a very productive poster anyways atm^^) also would prevent me from hugging and cuddling with my wife and kids...so a definite no go^^...
well i swallow with german puncuality my bitter tasting pills and hope for the best...
that is an oh so true fact... i have seen so many peeps push themselves too much and later they had to pay dearly...resting when needed is certainly no crime...
lol... sorry yet again...hobby time has been either killed by visits to doctors or other enterpises i wish i hadn´t had to do...now the kids focused weekend and then still a week with an ill at home wife (she had to...health seems to be on the cringed side at home atm) and work starting on wendsday...i hope i can start with the tank again...yeah i know promises, promises...
(just want to use the new thingies) unfortunately I had no wi-fi, so no dakka-time.
but on the plus side:
-My phone was found while I was away (I'd lost it)
-My laptop has been given a quote (around £60 to repair, cheaper than we thought)
-My fluff for my army/short story is being prepared (I decided what foe the sons of corax will face next and who they will fight with)
so now I'm back, got any suitable songs?
Edit: the "wow" orkmoticon looks like a huge yawn ^^
so i recently saw the yawn one too, what are the others supposed to look like???
so spain has let you back to the civilized parts of the world...hurra!^^
good news about your laptop and i am looking forward to read your fluff soon! and where was that handy of yours? sounds like you just misspllaced it at home then?^^ exactly why my kids won´t get one of these too soon^^

actually we were still in the UK, in grimsby (you probably haven't heard of it), we now have a week free, then we're off to spain. that handy was in my mother's coat pocket for some reason, and she'd forgotten she'd put it there.

yours truly vik!
Ah, see what happens when you show your wife the progress of the rest of us on this site Vik, seems we inspired her competetive nature!
i know i have been lazy and over chatty about lots of non hobby related stuff latley but finally i got my act together again and have something for you to show you...:
namly a mostly primed tank...behold:
just to recapture how the piece looked before here an old footage two months ago
then the work got done and i painted the whole damn thing with cheap wallpaint... the one you pour into the offwhite paint to color it the way you want it to be...
which led to this :
as said above not done cmpletly yet...prove is here... have to reglue the sponson bolters on again...and thus left this part unpainted...:
and then some nice detailshots to get a better view of the steamtank...
turret
steamengine and stacks...
closeup of the tracks...
and finally a view to show the inside between the tracksystems i have recently talked about...
oh monkey she did and she even wondered^^ ´morrow i can present you with the next step in "lickin`paint" ^^ as i had done the metal parts all in cheap silver...these later on will then be done in the apropriate metal colors to fit their individual jobs...so copper and brass.
as for what else colors will follow... the whole tank will get a verrrry harsh job of washing ...have to do some research if i still have some woodstain to use for shading and so on....if that one fails i will use devlan mud in great expenses^^
also i still ponder where to add the streak of reddness this tank needs... some bit so that it is not too sandy looking... and of course there is the matter of the union jack...the victorian version of said flag of course...
and then when all is done i still have to add a commander/ gunner for the turret...parts are gathered but he has to be assembled and of course painted^^
so thanks for all the nice comments shrike, monkey, neil, chibi and DarkTraveler777. i hope i can justify your complients with new updates very soonish^^
More rivets, paint primed and ready in a nice ochre color, and more to come! I am pleased mightily to see the tanks getting close to fruition! I wonder if the Praetorians will affectionately call her "Ole Belchy" or "Ole Smokey"???
as always is the fact once a ball is rollin`then it is rollin and gaining speed^^...
so here are some new pics of freshly done work on the big ol`chimney^^ so to speak... like the names you came up with shaso...but there is still something missing...can´t put my finger on it...
pics...then question to you...
all is still fresh and shiny...but i think this wont stay that way... tho i be damned if i know in which state this tank will be once finished...i am a bit worried to muddy that beast all up...seems the victorians would rather get shot whilst in battle than let their vehicle stay too dirty... so they are pretty keen on maintanance and will have the tank proper clean...(this is my current train of thought...feel free to derail it at your leisure^^)
also question... tho next step will be the additional colors to the side banners on the sponson but i still contemplate as to where i could add some "redd" to other parts...your thoughts fellas?
thanks santobell... said that to my wife exactly yesterday...the whole thing looks much improved once it was evenly primed...every detail added in another color just then adds to the effect^^
chibi... this was what i had in mind... tho i think i ruined that option as i did that fretwork on the trackssystems...the stacks will definatly get sooted... wouldn´t have it any other way... i probably add some scratches as i like the torn and scratched effect pretty much...
on the sides of the turret is by far the best idea... i had wondered how to add a bit of color to the turret and to thus better tie it in with the rest of the tank... this is a perfect idea... thanks monkey... also i think your spot on with the weathered thoughts^^ but not too dirty looking look...that would be fitting...
at anvildude...thanks mate... but remeber my tank is much more glamour like than the old mark V^^ lol
So much yet to go! for the flamer muzzles and chimneys, tin bits and then some chaos black to show heated and then sooted metal, allow just enough Tin bits to show at the edge of the black, the rest can stay silver to show how the edges got heated and coked!
tried myself out with some stuff i had lying around...didn´t work out to well to add shades to the tank hide...tested it at the underside of the tank...and left it at that...
without flash
with flash
well wasn´t what i had envisaged for the tank...
so i pulled out me old and trusty pot of flesh wash from way back of golden times and after a bit of consulting with my wife (she sure has some sense of style^^ lucky me^^)
i aplied generoulsy the wash to every bare part of the tank...and these are the pics to tell the story...
by the way... at monkey...took your hint to heart and did the regimental colors at the space in between the fretworks at the turret... and i like it^^
i am contemplating wether i should add a "V" into the regimental colors...could add charcter but could ruin the colors for themselves...
and shaso... your spot on to the next steps of my work on the tank...sounds like a good strategy what you say to get a good looking stack...^^
lol.... did some details on the tank...i hope i can show you some pics later on this day... changed on many pars the metalcolor... the silver was too shiny for my taste...great by the way to have you around again!
at shaso... the pics will also show my feeble attempts to soot the stacks...i guess i wasn´t that good....but the main thing thats unbeatable when working with cardboard is that every detail is so thick that another layer of paint wont obsucure any details^^
thanks mate^^ i am quite flattered^^ tho i have to say i feel a bit proud about it^^ i have yet to get some GS work done to get the second sponson working as for now the stupid mortar/bolters of mine always fall off...average glue didn´t work it seems...
SOUPerb! Really awesome tank mate! Love the colors as well. Never asked + must have missed it (there are 70 pages lol) how did you do that lovely circular crennelated effect on the armour plates?
thanks mate, wasn´t too sure that you guys would aprove of the dark and sometimes even in RL caramel looking tankhide...but i had to move with the flow and this is what happened^^
as for the
lovely circular crennelated effect on the armour plates
i just used cardboard between a holepunchset and after soe try and error work i worked out some pattern to get the shown effect...i think this might actully work for dark eldars too...somehow the spiky bit of the effect look right up their alley...
here are some earlier tries of the process...:
a failed attempt
and then for the real deal...
one day i will go back to my airship and will of course be revisiting and reusing this technique on the airship!
well...thanks mate...again^^
somehow the stempunk bug had me struck pretty hard and now whenever someone gets to be told what i do for hobby he gets a lecture in steampunk from me^^ i think there can´t be enough peeps around to fall in love with that genre...^^
so feel free to anounce your blog whenever a particular urge strikes you and lets you produce something^^
Have you considered using tin bitz, highlighting up with shining gold to get a reaslly nice brassy effect on the decorative lattice plating and then an almost black/ dark red or brown on the main plating?
Would look cool I think, then it could tie in to the red uniforms of your regiment..... with a behemoth like that who needs camouflage??
That must have taken you Eons! And not to mention require ridiculous precision (With concentric circles it is easy to see a missalignment, i see none!).
lol...at perkustin... there are mannnny irregularities in the fretwork...but i tried to cut down on them beforehand with good measuring...it helped to a point...but when all is set you still have to take the punch in your hand and then is the time where things can gop wrong... but i figured since i used the punched cardboard for other details and so on i could always make new parts with punched out details... after all cardboard i was using was so cheap it was in fact rubbish from art classes in my sons school^^ so in that department i am quite lucky^^ by the way, looks like eons but if i would have worked sharp and focused (a feat i am often unable...lol...) then it would only have taken me the better part of one day...i think the tank could have been finished much quicker...as i truly did^^
at dantay...i think you have a nice idea, the decorative plating might look nice that way, but i also think it might cause a too much business looking "look" for the tank. if i feel that way i might make some stripes at the fron of the tracks...in red and "whitish"...but i guess the most surfaces will stay as is as it is the look fom the classic mark V i want in parts honor a bit...it is my favorite tank design...^^ but i will give your brass recipe a try^^ sounds like this could look quite good...

Thumbs up to this.
Vik, I know it may seem odd, but the contrast between the darker fretwork and the lighter plating on the tank will make the fretwork much more obvious as Decoration. Plus, you can never have too much Brass.
Nicer feel to the metallics there Vik, Now, all it needs is flat black to "soot-it-up" inside and on the upper areas of the stacks showing some of that dark metal you have there, and also a "trail of soot coming out of the upper grill on the engines housing on the rear, also blacking the other parts of the housing as well. Same deal for the flamers as use would scorch when used. Looking good so far buddy!

so you think i should brassem up the whole fretwork?...hmmmm...could i get some more opinions on that? i have to ease my mind to that idea a bit by all your help^^

Same deal for the flamers as use would scorch when used
could you possibly show me a more explanaitionary pic of how to do that? seems i have yet to really understand what to do next... sorry seems i reach yet again my limits of speach^^

stippling with brush or should i use a bit of foam to sponge it on? and i give you that...the border was pretty crude even for me too...and it is in fact the second redo...the first tries looked even worse^^

i totally see your point...but to tell you the truth i am stretching myself here between posh brits (my stereotype picture of a victorian brit) and a suitable looking steamtechnology... in a way both would cancel out the other in my book...
See, the thing is, the high-class people, and the stuff they come into immediate contact with, are clean and fashionable. But anything that's that severely mechanical and does not touch someone of high-class? Those are grimy and dirty, though they were constructed fashionably still.
The dichotomy between classes is one of the defining points of Neo-Victorianism, at least in look- For every posh pith-helmeted safariing Lord just back from bagging a tiger in India, you have a dozen grimy, sweaty, plainly clothed mechanics and craftspeople that run the ships and fix the roads they walk on. For every classy Queen's Agent hiding a Dogworth Custom Deathray in his suit, you have the maids and groundskeepers that keep society running smoothly.
So while the inside of the Steamtank, (and the upper deck of the Zeppelin, for that matter) would be shiny and clean and upholstered in red velvet, the outside would be rusting and muddy and sooty, because they're in the field and don't have servants and specially designed garage bays to clean and maintain the vehicle.
that is one hell of an insight you just provided anvil! and you are right to the small print even! when i remember old historical stories or pics form that time you do get that seperated class hierarchy... like oliver twist or sherlock holmes... if i am not mistaken they would both be of that timeline... and they would sport lots of plushness and even more grimy kids begging or like in my fair lady mr doolittle is a very grimy and down on his luck coal delivery man... this is a side of the whole steampunk scene i for some reason haven´t thought about but now that you´ve pointed it out makes so much more sense to incorporate it in my schemes...thanks anvil and i really do mean it! needed some motivating and supporting insights!
I shall have to share picks of things I have made look heat discolored and burned like I described, but the stacks would leave the darker metal low, but the "crown" and some areas blow would be all black
with added stipling effect in black to blend the lines from metal to soot would you say i managed that effect? also yeah i am totally into guidance pics^^
Viktor von Domm wrote:with added stipling effect in black to blend the lines from metal to soot would you say i managed that effect? also yeah i am totally into guidance pics^^
Well, the main color was "chainmail" which fits Marines as they are effectively space knights. Then I painted a cover of "tin bitz" Kind of that deep brownish metallic, and then chaos black over that, and the results were the following pics

Got a few more to come out, but these should give an idea.
now i see....there is a "brownish corona underneath the sooted blackness...this is the section that got discolored due heat...the black spots are from the heat AND the smoke...now i understand what i have to do! thanks shaso, that helped a lot! by the way a nice looking speeder^^ and yep SM are pretty much that, space knights in shiny armor...exept mine of course who are all sandy^^
More, I have 9 pics of the speeder total right now.

I also have applied that same technique to all speeder engines I can, Flamers/Heavy flamers/and Melta-weapons
i like the effect, thats a good way to visualize heat and smoke!

Why do you think I provided the tools (or kilts) for some soldiers
I still wouldn't go too grimy Vik unless you want it looking like in the middle of a battle.
Have seen a modern AFV modelled in 1/35 scale that was muddied up and downright mucky. The modeller related that this was how the self propelled gun looked after an exercise, but the first thing when they got back was an order to clean her up!
Why do you think I provided the tools (or kilts) for some soldiers
that reminds me to get going with the tank so that i can direct my attention back again to the böck devils and their queeny...ach me aching back... it is always work...
at chibi...
it is like making the splits... i have to really balance that realism/grimy with the posh/clean...
I've got a few examples of heat/smoke weathering, and my two best examples are my heavy flamer-wielding terminator and my multi-melta wielding dreadnought, but I can't find pictures of them.
in my next pic update I'll snap a few off ^^
here's the only one I have I can find, on my librarian (might have to zoom in a fair bit though)
come to think of it, I think I have a few pics on my picasa gallery, but I CBA to dredge it up ^^

Trust me I feel your pain.....I finished assembling my Lemon Russ Executioners and my Ogryn stand ins only to learn through e-mail that Mantic is now taken the first pre-orders for Warpath. So I had to dig around in my budget and place an order for some Forge Fathers.... luckily itll be months before they ship. So much painting to do.
Over that apply washes of a dark blue such as Regal Blue and Scorched Earth dark brown (forgot its name)
Then for the really darker burnt metal apply washes of as mix of the brown and blue. This will make a black which you can make warmer or cooler depending on the ratio of mix.
Haven't got a good example to show but to give some idea
hi neil, yep thought about a bit of chivalry was apropriate^^
at chibi, if you could, a detailshot of the exhaust would be nice... this is a very nice effect you created! i like it very much!
at jeroen... i hope to see some pics of these matic minis soonish from you...as i had seen some pics of them they look very promising...also they carry quite nice guns...a quadro barrel pistol in each hand is as bad as you can get in my book^^
at shrike, like the effect on the melta too...looks suitable burnt and used...what paints did you use for that? also i have to ask what helmet is the liberian wearing...looks like a GK to me with a hood...or is it a BT helmet?

I used chaos black, scab red and boltgun metal.
paint it chaos black, drybrush boltgun metal over the closest end to the user, then drybrush scab red over the middle third, and have the end tip chaos black. smudging the paints can also help if they don't look smooth.
the head is a dark angels head. GWS removed the kit from thier site, but AFAIK if you dredge up the page and order it, you can still get it. It's a 2-sprue kit containing 10 dark angels, lots of heads, weapons, gear, ect. for £12. An incredibly good deal IMO.

Well soon is a relative term then....as they are pre-order. I dont think they will ship for another 3 months or so but I'll keep you posted. Promise.
to be honest i have wondered about that too... any suggestions to cope with that? i am willing to change major colorparts...so i am game to any good suggestions...
yep it sure does tho i didn´t knew it before^^...
i more thought maybe i could redo the whole ocker/brownish color all over and let the brass stay in place... what do you think about that then?
I'd say keep the brass, that helps with the viktoriana feel, you want that in there. Switching the ochre for muted yellow or green could be nice, possibly a grey. I'd say a faded grey/green would be good.
TBH none of those is exactly what I was looking for, but maybe it'll help
hmmm well firstly thank you monkey, and secondly i think your definatly right with the brass...it has to be touchd up but the general idea behind it is good and thus it will stay^^
the other mentioned tones are a bit not so up my alley...the grey and the green would bring the tank too much into the WWII theme for my liking and i rather think of it more WWI meets victorian steampunk...so this stops me from going that route...i think that you have a certain workable thought with the yellow but what i will be throwing into that discussion is the dheneb stone. this would again blend the tank into the army better as mecharite red and deneb stone and then the brass are the main colors of the army... what do you think of that?
for refference the lighter patches on the tank...the regimental colors and the "whitish" parts of union jack are done in deneb stone...but this could lead to another discussion as then it would be a very bright tank...and dirt would then by a major issue...as in it has to be aplied...
also i thought about using boltgun metal all over to give the tank a more bare metal look...
as said above i am up to all kinds of evil against the tank^^
Maybe try a wash of black or dark grey on the ocher? Just to darken it a bit. I was honestly thinking more of a wrought iron look to the filligree, have that be darker (maybe Tin Bitz, with a little drybrushed bronze?) than this way, but I like the brassy details. But either way, you need one to be darker, and the other to be lighter.
Could try red instead of Ocher. It'd be one of your regimental colors, and stand out from the detailwork. And remember, this is Steampunk, so they're not necessarily going to be hiding their iron behemoth, so camoflauge colors are unnecessary.
Yeah, red would be good. Dheneb would end up a bit bright I think, but red's nice, good contrast with the brass, regimental colour, sounds good to me. You'd probably have to put a brassy border around the Jack for contrast, and maybe re-think the already red panels.
i think anvildude and monkey you both are right about the red... and sure i then should redo the already red spots...i think i then go for some more deneb stone with a bit of a twist... i am developing some ideas right atm...
if this fails i still can use my idea of bare metal...
you know the one good thing working with so much cardboard is you can never really hope to obscure details with tooo much paint... cardboard details are way too thick to drown them^^
at monkey:
you'd probably have to put a brassy border around the Jack for contrast
what is "jack" supposed to mean in that context? i seem to miss a certain something here...
at anvil:
And remember, this is Steampunk, so they're not necessarily going to be hiding their iron behemoth, so camoflauge colors are unnecessary
thats probably why i came up with the whole steampunk act in the first place...i feel not at home with stealthy armies...i am more a "gather in a field and bludgeon the other bugger that wears the wrong colors kind of fighter"^^

THAT GOES TO SHOW HOW SPECIAL AND FAMOUS WE ARE^^
well mates i have digested your hints...to some extent and had a good thinking about them...well...the outcome is this...:
you could call it the a case of the emprerors new clothes^^
also here are some more detailed shots...mind you these are all taken with flash... hopefully i can make some daylightpics `morrow...cause it is a tad lighter in bright daylight than with the flash used...
and a pic of yours truly vik...my wife suddenly grabbed after the cam and caught me inflagranty so to speak so this is a pic even suitable for the dakka gallery^^
my felix by the way told me he liked the silver...and i am a bit unsure about the shinyness of that... brass would suit me to be honest better...
don´t hesitate to add your opinions^^
cheers, vik
by the way i stumbled over my own tank at least three times via google search...^^ `tis quite flattring^^
you know the more work i put into that thing i get afraid that something like that might actually happen...ever heard about selffullfilling prophecy...now that would be creepy as heck... *crosses finger and spits into a corner...*^^
Oh, shiny tank Like the red, but I agree, needs some more brass to come back. Maybe a mix of silver and brass, the silver does look nice, just I'm feeling the brass more. Certainly more brass on the turret.
yeah... this can happen... now you now the ugly genius behind the paintings and usually it is savely hidden behind the cam^^ that´s what you get when the wife aims a cam at you^^
silver brass mix...hmmm... i could only do the fretwok in brass and whenever i have bolts i could leave them in silver...how´s about that?
Sounds good. Maybe the strips either side/above and below the Union Jack could be silver, I think they need to be something other than red anyway. Brass would work too obviously, Oh, maybe silver with brass rivets there, reversing the normal pattern?
How do we know that Vik didn't hire a male model for the day?
And if he did, what does Mrs. Vik have to say about that, you good for nothing playboy you!
nope, there isn´t a chance to develope even further than that what is already there^^...
and i couldn´t hope to hire a male model...or come to that any model at all (except some minis of course^^) to impersonate me... too much negative image for future jobs for this model then^^
playboy...lol that would be a cool swearword issued against me... lol
well guess thats what i had to see coming my way for shooving my mug out into the webways...well...
at dantay: what exactly do you mean with panels...i am rather confused so it would help if youpointed them out with supportive pics^^ i am sure you are on to something here...
it is not that i am complaining the term playboy per se, just happen to be the wrong kind of flok of peeps that do it^^ if you all happen to be sweet and charming and unattached femmes that would be inclined to meet such a beaux like me ... i wouldnae hav`a wee prob against... but it was ye so...either me or ye are damned^^
anyway...got brassed up tank to show the masses^^...also we move strongly to page nr. 80 in this blog of small nonsense^^
by doing this that way i could leave the union jack as is as oposed to the suggetstion of monkey troll then... then the jack would be stading out more... i think this is quite a good idea chibi! thanks mate! and thanks for the praise too^^
and because of the wash after the drybrush i thought about a drybrush at all ^^ yep! if i just washed it it would darken too much and thus the drybrush beforehand would be the perfect way^^ so thanks a heap again^^

If my sons of corax ever got in a fight with either of you, you'd never know it. You'd either be drinking tea or vodka respectively and then you will see a blur, and soon discover that you no longer have your heads attached to your bodies. Vik's tank? Let's just say TH/SS vanguard veterans.
Hi there long time no see. I see you painted your tank - twice!
f I had a recomendation at this point it would be to smoother the entire thing in dilute black wash to bring out the detail in the metalwork. It looks very Imperial!
so first things first...weety, the pics you see is indeed unwashed and will see treatment soonish^^ and to be honest...two times is what you fellas have witnessed^^ the correction work due to my sloppy painting skills is more about three to four times the tank all over...seems touchups are followed by touchups to touch up the points i carlessly overdone in the first attempt...well thats me... thought that wouldnae happen with something that big... but no chance it seems...
anvildude is spot on on this mates... not only is the tank so thickly layered in steel and vanadium and adamantium up to their ears that it is nearly imprevious, but also you have considerably underestimated the function of shinyness... this isn´t about posh and decadence...it is a very special way to hide in plain sight... think about zebras in the steppe...the heat and the surrounding terrain make it too blurry to recognize... thus hunters get confused...the bright reflections of starlight and sunlight gets sensors so much confused that the enemy has to fire next to blindly...try that once and miss and you can kiss the emperor your last farewell...not that he would care...hur hur hur...in the meanwhile the officer sips his tea and the men share a rude bottle of gin between them...after all soldiers are dying...and respect demands mourning regardless of sides...
and about terminators that cometh stampeding...they soon will find out why the "eternity" (nice name i just came up with atm^^) has such wide tracks... it is of course for crushing and grinding insolents to smithering bits!!!
Aye up Vik , good to see the beast looking glammed up , and your tank is looking quite good too Liking the red and silver especially on the turret . my only crits are she looks like she needs some more depth on the red , i know you didnt want to dirty her up too much though Keep well matey and congrats on getting this far with her found this pic thought you might like it
thanks for the praise and the linky...i´ve stumbled over the steamtank from time to time, very nice and as discribed even funktioning papermodel! there are plenty of nice arms when following that cool link...mark you all my friends these are worth looking into too! and one day i will move into 1:1 modeling myself...i am in fact roaming shops for a suitable waterpistol for quite a long time now^^ (fruitless sadly!)
about the red sans depth... i am currently working on that and have dry (well not actulally really dry-) brushed blood red over the mecharite red... it is now a bit like that all over:
and also i have followed the hint and painted the frame of the sponsons in mithril silver and will soon make it all brass...as usual...
Well, I did say t hat it was a "what if" scenario. Not likely that my army and Viks will get so easy a chance to play against each other as transporting an army through the airports is a hassle.
BUT if it could be done...........hmmm
But having seen the horde that is the KIG/SAA, it would need a old fashioned steamer trunk for itself.
Space Marines are so very different from IG Shrike, but yeah, Both Viks treads and the big Tanks I have use treads wide enough to grind terminators under. "Yuri, did you feel a bump?"
I am thinking of having a special rule for the "Vasily-Tank hunter", if both guns are fired as one with just one die instead of the two, then they make the main weapons into a single Strength D weapon. Instead of 2 separate S-8 + 2d6 each.
Vik could use the bow heavy flamers as the ones that make the template go 18" away from the tank and use the massive "Hellstrike" template(18" flamer template), and if twinlinked, re-roll failed wounds, now that would be a lot of crispy Orks or whatever you face!
lol... i don´t plan on either making a phoenbox or a bus in the nearer or even further future^^ the bus and box are illustrated to show what the tank atm looks like in terms of color... i added a layer of not too much drybrushed blood red over the mecharite red and thus the tank ressembles a bit of a british bus in my opinion^^
if not something happens against it i will show you my latest progress tomorrow, which consist of yet some more changes that weren´t to be expected when i started the tank painting^^ but i guess change happens^^
shasolenzabi wrote:Space Marines are so very different from IG Shrike, but yeah, Both Viks treads and the big Tanks I have use treads wide enough to grind terminators under. "Yuri, did you feel a bump?"
who said anything about terminators? I was on about my vanguard veterans.
but in a 1500 point match, I'd take 5 TH/SS terminators with so-not-a-painted-black-lysander in a land raider redeemer, my 5 man scout squad, chapter master, 5 missile launcher devastators, tactical squad with meltagun and multi-melta, 5 TLLC vanguard veterans, and a vindicator. That's roughly 1500 points.
heh, we should play a three-way hypothetical match ^^
tho i have to say i will in the future for definite get my hands on some of the nice stuff maxmini produces i have for the time being 40 heads of those already in my paws^^:
which can look like this when painted:
and thus a new headswap is not what i intend to buy... also i still have plenty^^ of gasmasked scotsmen heads lying around^^
speaking of other things...
new pics and i got a creative discussion with the wife...she said the brass effect i used was not up to the task...so i took my gold paint out and worked around that problem...now i need your help here too:
one side in old version with froamed sponson in washed mithril silver with flesh wash as brass effect NR.1
detailshot of sponson...
other side done in golddrybrush but it looks rather brassy ...
and detail of other sponson done with golddrybrushed on...
the gold drybrush version is stil unwashed so i plan to add a layer of sepia or ogryn flesh wash or even devlan mud...to make it more brassy even... later on then a green wash might add a bit of weathering then...
i think we have a winner then... tomorrow will be then the rest done in that fashion! somehow that idea for that look lay totally dormant in my mind... needed my wife yet again to wash my head^^
The brassier look you have now is more along the lines of what I meant before (Iwas going to suggest like my dreadnoughts plasma cannon but yours looks way good), The lighter gold looks like you painted gold over white and the white still peeks through.
I'd say Maybe ogryn flesh then another light drybrush with the gold should do it nicely.

hey vik! great looking tank man! really Baroque! i love it...there are more than a few IG guardsmen being treated like dirt in that chassis! A few slaps, a stink eye, maybe a bullet through an insubordinants brain....ahhh the imagination flows
hello mates it is again picture update time!!!
but first i want to answer some of yer questions and nice comments!
as anvildude states, this effect the oxidating effect of brass and copper i would like to give a faint try...could give the model a bit of a coloraddition to make it not too monochrome^^
at dsteingass:
pic is currently not showing but i know that the reaper general is one of my future projects! he is currently on the to do list on my shelf...i just fell in love with that character^^ and i think you had a great idea to make him into a Nick Fury kind of version for 40k... the guy oozes grim dark from every pore^^ so i will try my best to make an eyepatch for him^^
at dantay... yep a warming blend will happen... already i did wash the brass on the boiler...pics will be lower down that post...i wanted to be the boiler a bit darker asthe rest of the brass so i used there devlan mud.... for the other parts an ogryn fleshwash seems a good thing to me!
and in fact it was mithril silver and then old fleshwash over this then...and i realized that it does work on small surfaces as helmets and breastplates or even parts of guns but it fails on wide surfaces such as are on a tank...so you are bank to rights that it looked in parts quite unfinished...to say the least^^
at bebopdrums2424
lol... that is a nice imagination you have there^^ thanks mate^^ but you aint seen nuffin yet^^
at hazzer...long time no read here! nice to see you back and big tanks...er thanks^^
so here are we getting to the main course now ...the picture updates...
hands up mates who thinks too that i somehow made a khronish tank for the empire??? well is it only me...?
as stated above here are the detail pics for the steamboiler...hope you like it...tried to give it as much a wooden barreled look as i am currently capable of...
also with the devlan mud wash to the brass parts i tried to achieve a oily and sooted look as well...kind of...
some days ago monkey troll mused about the panels... i guess he meant the parts shown here on the upper part of the tank right under the turret...
what do you think i should do with those spaces inbezween the brassen fretworks... there are all together nine of them on three sides ...any ideas and then how to achive the execution of said ideas? i haven´t yet looked into my decal stock so it miht doable to aply decals there... tho i have to state that i really don´t like decals to use on my tank...^^
feel free to leave a comment about your musings of the world^^
