So here he is anyway, held back a fair bit as he was character standard, added some sneaky little details to the nurglings to try and colour balance a bit, Im not sure how hes turned out really, but he looks quite nice in the hand so thats something at least.

I figured the chains would have to be super dark to get the right contrast, but they still have a fair bit of work to go Everyone needs manglers, it should be model painting law.
A recommendation, perhaps, but not a law.

Thanks dude, but I must admit I wing it often. I think I have just gotten better at winging it, not better at being super sure and always knowing exactly what I am doing beforehand. Maybe thats all "talent" is, getting better at making things up as you go. hohohoh.

I have some Warmachine and a Carnifex still for sale, but they won't be dropping below this price or going to auction (due to the prices of the actual models, you are literally going to be paying only a couple of euro for the paintjobs as it is)

Early WIP for a guard unit, tabletop standard so won't be too detailed.
Guns and metals need to be started, cloth needs a wash and rehighlight, faces need mouth details and bases need to be done, but that should be it.

It may just be the beginning of a bunch of IG vets or someone wanted some figs to swap between normal vet squad leaders with laspistols and melta vets. I keep bunches of flamers, meltas, plasma guns, and grenade launchers to swap in my IG force. However, I don't use plasma pistols with single wound models - especially commissars; too risky. So maybe the plasma pistol dudes are company commanders?

Just got an email in reply to the one I sent Gw explaining that the replacement gobbo I received was as bad as the original.
Hello
Thank you for your email. We have recived a replacement set of the goblins, they have been checked and confirmed that they are of the best standard currently available. There are some fine holes but they are in the undercuts such as beneath robes and one which is under the nose and do not interfear with the detail, a small amount of liquid greenstuff applied with an old brush should resolve them.
We will have these replacements with you as soon as possible. If you have any problems please do not hesitate to get in touch.
The underlined part strikes me as an extremely strange thing to say to a customer about your product, is it just me?
I am however happy with the clearly hand typed email with direct communication, if the gobbo arrives and does just have tiny bubbles I can easily fill with PVA and has no detail loss, then I am ok with that. I would have preferred it not take weeks, but they did in fairness send me a second mangler box I did not request so I can't complain.
Fingers crossed this Gobbo is usable.

As with all things GW... "quality" is a relative term. Just depends on how low you want to set your standards. They aren't artists Iffy, they're businessmen. That means whatever minimum quality you're willing to pay for is the quality they're going to provide. Doing any better doesn't make financial sense.
It's QC Limbo.... GW-style!

I have many horror stories :( I don't mind the typos, it means the person who handled this email is not one of the usuals, hence not using a template and macro's. Thats a good thing, hopefully this person knows what they are talking about.
So the tabletop Guard are now all done, pew pew pew.
Did not go too crazy with them due to their painting standard, but hand fun regardless. Got them done in two sittings, which ain’t bad.
They had resin bases and guns, I had to actually snip their arm parts at the fists and make new arms to try and fit them under the guns, which is why some are balled up fists The owner knew that would happen and did not mind.
Phew!

What didn't? They had a thousand tanks that could all shoot indirectly. You'd get blown to he-double toothpics before you could even cross the board. Oh, and the cheesy assassins. Oh, and Yarrick... oh, and etc. etc. etc.
While IG are still a very good army, I can play them and enjoy myself, not so back then. Everybody hated guard... far more than any other army of the period.

As someone who was using IG pretty solidly through 3rd edition, that wasn't my experience at all - I'd need to double-check my old 'dex, but as I recall the indirect tank weapons (by which you're referring to the Griffon and Basilisk) all had quite a hefty minimum range. The only other indirect fire weapons were infantry mortars, which have never been the most terrifying of weapons.
When it comes down to idiotically overpowered books in 3rd edition, I've got two words for you - Chaos 3.5.

Oh god :( I don't feed any of my pets on full "kibble", too many sad stories. I use it as a base and add lots of fresh foods. They will have meadow hay, sprouts and the odd bit of lemon for vitamin C, and my large grassy garden to graze on when I have them used to being on harnesses.

Ack we were supposed to skype today werent we, sorry I was painting all freaking day >< Poke me tomorrow on facebook and Ill log and we can chat.
Today I got a lot of work done on the massive wolf mounts.
The casts themselves are really nice bar some minor issues which hopefully are not too noticeable. (bubbling, non straight edges etc) I believe these are a small home business based set and so are very clearly home cast, but they are quite unique even if a little bit rough around the edges
These are to character standard, their metals need a little more work but apart from that the wolves themselves are done. Will be on snow effect bases
Marines will be airbrushed with hand painted lower halfs, should not be a noticeable difference. Great to see these starting to come together.

Beats playing a monk Even fully geared, you're pretty screwed. As Iffy mentioned, Inferno is...fun. In fairness, I don't know any class that is not hitting brick walls in inferno. Takes a lot of practice and gearing to the get past them, but everyone can just about manage. My pal is playing a full defensive barb atm and he is totally stuck, he overestimated how far taking very little damage with only 5k dps would get him :( prime12357 wrote:The wolves look really great! "PETE THE PINK POLKA-DOT SQUIG" Yes thats right folks, hes pink, and he has polka dots. He is also tiny. Really, really tiny. The size of a thumbnail. He sits on the base of the mangler, looking smug and not aware he is about to be stood on. Poor Pete. He is still making me laugh. Spec and playstyle really, I can take 1 hit and survive it, but if I am taking a hit then I am doing something wrong to be honest.
Take templar everywhere and gear him with tanky stats, start with nether tentacle spam which will crit 5 times or so for 80k+, Drop shadow beast rain of vengeance and continue to spam NT, then start kiting. Entangling shot, get some range, smoke screen so they start moving back to the templar, spam NT, smokescreen, spam, smokescreen, spam, preparation, smokescreen, spam, repeat infinitely.
I have a lot of experience with Monster Hunter so I am used to extreme twitch gaming styles, this suits perfectly. I have to be aware of all aoe effects and damage range of the creatures while juggling cooldowns, but it works.

Sounds like fun I will have to try a Demon Hunter after I finish gearing my WD and get my Baba to 60
My wd plays completely different. I'm currently abusing a passive ability that triggers 300% mana regen when 4 skills are on cooldown. I pop 2 long cooldows then cycle 2 short cooldown utility spells. 1 regens health and increases int and the other snares. while 4 cooldowns are active I spam massively costed uber dmg spells until everything is dead. works quite well actually
Usually it goes : Fetish Army, Big Bad Voodoo, Soul Harvest (? can't remember if this is right, server ports blocked at work nuuuuuuuuuu), Grappling Hands(?), spam a combination of poison cloud and haunt. I have a few other spells I would like to try as well but the mana regen is pimp!
I do enjoy my pink spotty bottoms.......wait a second.... I think I'm confusing this with a particular english desert...
Really I just don't like big green meanie squigs pushing cute little squigs around! They make me want to get out my squig herding pole!

I am so, so sorry.
I did my usual update across my sites and was totally convince I had updated Dakka.. but I didn't.
I've not been gone, I've just been dense :(
Sorrrry :(
So there has been a fair amount of progress, and also a lot of wasted time and angst.
HaHa my eyesssssssssssss.
Mangler the second is assembled and primed, chatting with owner about colours.
Pete No.2 Is primed and mid painting for the Manglers base He is a red mushroom squig. Madness.
Wurrzag is assembled and primed and will be started on after my weekend.
I have a Legion of Everblight pack arriving any day which are going to be fabulous.
I have a Trygon and Zoanthrope on the way to the same scheme as the old Carnifex.
Some amazing super secret Mini's arrived that I shall keep hush about but am excited for.
And finally, I wasted near a whole day trying to work out how to fix a mini I now loathe.
The second replacement Goblin from GW had far less bubbling and terrible mold issues, but I feel he is genuinely under quality for the squig. I spent, no joke, 7 hours on this model.
Between trying to file down the grittyness (he is tiny, it is so difficult) to filling areas, to spending so fething long working on the skin in a desperate attempt to make it look ok, and this is the result -
Now only the skin is "done" in fairness, but I personally think that is a disgrace. I am no golden demon winner, but I know I can paint decently and I don't think I can save this. He looks like he is made out of bits of sand. Horrible :S
Here he is on the Mangler and I think even if I spend another 7 hours, he is going to negatively affect the model -
So what I said to the owner is that we should use his little friend instead, who is infinitely smoother-
and who I think will look way better -
I am genuinly upset about this, I don't like wasting that much time on something that is not really my fault. Ugh :(

Burn that goblin he is a disgrace! What a shame, he looks like a backward child's drawing of a goblin. A shame really because the pose is nicely dynamic - maybe you can sculpt a tiny paper bag and stick it over his head? It just goes to show that us miniature painters rely on having good sculpts to show our talent.
Anyway enough goblin bashing, sometimes you just can't win.
That group shot is brilliant (and demonstrates that you do in fact paint goblins very well). I am going to zoom all over it.

I'm at the point where I will no longer accept commissions that will include finecast being bought and sent to me. It's not fair in the long run for me, or the owner. Yes I might get a decent one sent, but really... the chances are not high.

It's an excellent game if you like grinding for items while dieing to horrible overtuned creatures every 10 seconds, lol No really though, great game, and the first balancing patch this month should help some of its issues out.

Just need to have the person who the figure belongs to buy and inspect it before sending it to you. I have several finecast models are are quite nice, but also many that I have called for multiple times and got multiple bad casts (my Emperors Champion wasn't right until #5). I agree its not fair to make you get the replacement, and delay your workflow. Not fair to the owner to make it last an extra month while waiting for a good cast.

That's a great idea in theory, but a lot of the people I do work for are not very experienced painters and what they would consider perfectly fine could very well be an absolute nightmare for me to work with :( It's a stupid situation to be in, I wish I could just happily accept deliveries and not have to worry about this crap.

It really is shocking that it can vary that much, isin't it :(
So anyway, heres todays work.
Very early WIP shots of mangler 2, who is a firetruck red with a hot orange finish. This will be tamed quite a bit when I start shading him.
The white spots are only preliminary markings, the rest of his detail will be done by hand Thinking a very striking ice blue for his gums and tongue.
He looks like junk at the moment, but will start to look really nicely defined as I start shading him in the morning
And to clash with mr firetruck, a cool grey and blue mini squig who will have bright pink gums and little lime spots, he will sit on his base like Pete and the green mangler
And in Diablo news, I am 600 points away from 120000 dps, on late act 4 solo, and sold my first item today for €20! That does not seem much, but I got paid to play a game I love and can buy a pizza this weekend Score!

RiTids, a confession, I secretly wanted to paint the green mangler black with really strong red stripes. I think that would have been amazing. He doe's look cool with the rest of the models though, even if his green overshadows the grots a little!
I really do only want to work with metal when it is an option, I know a lot of people say finecast is fine for them but.. I go through quite a lot of models and have not come across a single finecast I am happy with. So while it may be working out ok for others, it just ain't for me :(

Ifalna, given your Irish heritage and the pose of Mangler 2: The Sequel, will he be trying to kick Sam the Mini-Squig through the posts in a conversion attempt?
Don't worry, they aren't painted yet and will be super toadstooly when I am done Also shusssh I can't discuss mini squig possibilities yet, its all under wraps.
I have a friend coming around today who asked me to teach her how to paint a bit, so I am seriously looking forward to that!

Yes, it is funsies Sold a crossbow for €30, and had one drop that would have easily been €200 but it wasted 2 spare stat slots on int and str instead of the + dam I needed. 180 dext and 88% crit damage crossbow wasted.. I wept.
Anyway!
Big red squig had a lot of progress.
His lovely orangey highlights have been lost in the shots a bit.. I might take the next update shots on a black background as I always get way better red results with it.
Skin is about done, white spots need to be finished, and white underbelly needs highlighting, then starting on his mouth and tongue. There is a little gobbo hidden in his mouth, it is amazing.
Will get his belly and mouth done tomorrow, likely chains too My friend who visited painted up 3 elven horses and did VERY well, I was seriously impressed, she was enraged she had to leave before finishing them so will be back in the near future to finish them off. I am proud!

Ifalna, just wanted to say my wife and I have been using your tutorial to improve our painting skills. Very helpful. Thank you! By her third model she picked up washing really well.
One question though- we never bought a black wash and we've been using really thin black paint. Is that ok or would you say the ink/wash is a must?

I stuck with the blue for the tongue so the goblin in there would stand out, if I had gone acid green I think he would have been hard to see!

Oh! Awesome to hear it was some use! Thin black paint will work fine for basic shading, but the reason the wash is so useful is it will pool properly in the recesses and not across the whole area. If you use thinning or glazing agent instead of water, it should be closer to what a washes consistency is
I would definitely recommend getting some though, it is great stuff.
weetyskemian44 wrote:Can we see some pics of your friends horses or are they shy?
I will ask her if its ok to post them, she is pretty shy and might want them to be finished before I put shots out on the interwebs, hehe.

You got pigs, Ifalna? Inside or outside pets? I used to have a pair. They can be destructive inside pets if you're not careful, but they're SO much fun.
Have you tried rubbing their bellies yet? Pigs love having their bellies rubbed. If you start while it's standing up, it will lean over to give you a better angle. It will keep leaning farther and farther until, eventually, it falls over. HILARIOUS!

I love painting blue, blue is my favourite colour by far! I like to try and sneak a blue shade into mini's quite often
This trygon is indeed to match the Carnifex, the person who bought it commissioned me for more, how cool is that! He is going to paint the smaller figs but I get to do some of the bigger ones which is win, they are only to tabletop but they are a lotta fun.

If your hands are shaking, then you probably have a blood sugar problem, and you should make sure you're not sliding into Type 2 diabetes.
I would keep a small amount of dried fruit and/or peanuts. A mix of natural sugars and protein for your long painting sessions. Also, take a break every 'X' hours, get up, walk around, drink water, have a snack, then return to the quest.

Aye, it's totally my blood sugar, but it's from being a twonk and forgetting to eat for hours and hours while I paint, not any underlying nastyness, dont worry I grabbed a bag of dried fruit and some sunflower seeds and left them at my desk, I'm great for drinking but eating just totally slips my mind when I get in the zone, food I can just mash into my face with one hand is perfect, so these will do the job!
I could also just make sure to eat BEFORE I start painting, but that would cut into my nerdy game time. Clearly my life is an eternal struggle. /weep

Holy crap thats a lot to drop in a year. I wouldn't have the self control, honestly. Most I've ever lost was 1 stone and now just try and stay around the weight I ended up as, which is easy enough working from home with a controlled larder I can't do what I used to do in the office and use vending machines, which are a terrrrrible habit to get into. I have started doing basic weights though, I one day hope to have the guns of Chris Hemsworth on my totally mismatched body, so I can punch down doors and wrestle bears. It's my life goal.
Blues shaded ( not that you can tell with my massively bright desk lamp derp) and starting on the mouth.

I mean, not shaking... but I don't realize I'm hungry.
I'll start painting then, the next thing I know, it hits me all of a sudden; it's 4 hours later, my iTunes playlist has gone off (God knows how long ago), I'm hungy, and I have to pee like CRAZY.
I remember to drink. I pick the cup up and drink without conscious thought. It's eating that's the problem. LOL
Of course, the drinking thing's a problem when you mistakenly grab your paint water... but that's a different thread. LOL

Of course, the drinking thing's a problem when you mistakenly grab your paint water... but that's a different thread. LOL

I am back off weekend now, I did a little bit of work on the tabletop standard Carnivean when I really shouldn't have been painting, but he was too fun to not play around with. I ended up just throwing them on Tumblr as the chap I am painting them for is on there, but here is the work done so far
I am extremely unhappy with the joints, they did not seem this bad pre white which is really highlighting them.
I don’t usually greenstuff tabletop stuff but I’m going to need to with this dude, Ill leave it as a final touch and finish it off with the skin tone. Frustrating.
I also finally just bought the webcam I have been planning on for ages, which is a lovely - http://www.trustedreviews.com/Microsoft-LifeCam-Cinema_Peripheral_review
I plan on trying to make some painting vids as soon as it arrives, but I am not quite sure what to do!

Ugg... those seams are terrible. Definitely want to GS those a bit. Shame too as the rest is looking quite nice. I guess I'd recommend making a simple vid or two to get the hang of the medium... then when your confident, make a video version of your beginners guide... having your work in multiple formats is generally a very good idea and best of all it builds on work you've already done.

MS Video editor should stand tall for you just fine. The key thing that most people ignore is SOUND. Wear a microphone (or headset) when recording your voice. Remove all background noise. When working on a video, keep your sound levels 'normal'. And, for the love of everything you hold holy (squigs?) if you're going to use music, use it sparingly, and at a low/controlled level. Nothing kills a video tutorial faster than blasting some crappy deathmetal band at your viewer/listener. Same goes for podcasts. Ugh.

I won't be using voice recording at all, reasons being that my accent is ridiculous and would not be very useful for people trying to watch my stuff and learn anything from it, as all you would hear is " OI U GITS OK TRUN ON DE PAINTS ON DE SQUAGS OK !**& LEARN YE PAINTIN LIKE DIS YEAH LIKE YEAH. You know Shakespeare was an Irishman... he just moved to London for the warm summers! Seriously... that could be your "thing"... your hook to draw people in & set yourself apart from all the other million video how-to's out there. You don't have to do much... just a paragraph before each tutorial to get people in the mood... Once they see how good you are they'll stay, but you need something to sucker... Hahaha, it really does! I'm getting massive crash bandicoot nostalgia, it was the first game I had for my playstation just after it was released. Man, I am so happy you showed the wee ones TLA. If I had kids it would definitely be up there on things to watch, my 10 yo bro has been getting a season sent to him every couple of months and just finished it off recently. Theres good stuff for kids in that show. Good stuff for everyone.
Gitsplitta wrote:Kids watch the new series but the Ms. and I haven't gotten into it.
I literally just watched the entire season in one sitting with my boyfriend in a massive Korra last weekend. It is fantastic, but more adult. Definitely aimed at kids coming into their teens and older. Seeing the children of all the TLA characters as adults with their own problems is fantastic, Toph's daughter is.. just.. the Chuck Norris of ladies.
The police of Republic city were started by Toph and are now a regiment of metal benders. They are beyond badass. I would definitely recommend watching it, I am sure the kids would love it too but might not be interested in Korra's teenage girl got a crush on two boys angst

Hah, glad people are liking the yellows, the yellows were by far the hardest. Yellow is my nemesis.

Cheers! They are so tiny, I wanted to get in some knot detail but they are so so tiny. The mask looks quite big but at its tallest its about an inch and a half?

The feathers were so much fun, but I thiiiiink I will be skipping them for a while after this dude I am all feathered out now.

Hehe, he's big into FPS games which I am atrocious at so he kind of has the upper hand there. But I beat him on the sheer nerdery scale.
KingCracker wrote:Holy hell! Howcome Ive never seen this thread before? Fantastic work on everything Ive seen so far.
I dont know! Maybe you did see it but were horrified and mentally repressed it. That happens to me sometimes.
So here is tonights progress anyway -
Mask all done, I went for darkening down the wood quite a lot to get across age, and dirtied up the metals. I also whipped out some black and finelined around the jaw so there is some nice shadow in there which I think it really needed.
And the body so far :
Bit more work to go on the interior skin, not quite where I want it yet and I apparently got a bloody wash stain on the right. Enraged.
Leather needs a bit more blending, highlights are too stark, then its on to his weapons and nicknacks like pouches. Bones are early WIP.
The skins may be changed, I've asked for advice on the Eavy Metal FB page cause I just cannot seem to get them to look how they do in my mind, I want them to look like really badly cured streaky skin, but it's just slipping through my fingers and I am getting frustrated :(

I think youre being a bit hard on yourself as far as the skins go. I, for one, think they look really good.
Also.... I would never had noticed the stain unless you mentioned it xD

I think the skin looks really, realy good! How'd you do it? Anyway, if you rather want it too look like a weather-beaten hide, mix some bright and medium browns into the green and paint brighter stripes all over him, following the muscles. So far he looks smooth and clean.
Also, how'd you paint the cloth between his legs?

I would also love to know how you got the skin and cloth looking so good. I wish I could get even close to that. BTW I was in Ireland for the weekend and surprisingly enough it was quite sunny so I am hoping you are enjoying it.

Hehe, they look ok, but aren't quiet what was trying to get them to look like, so its a bit of a personal fail. The stain is pretty noticeable in reality so I am going to have to try and fix it up..

Oh awesome! Thats gotta be a good thing Amazed you read through the whole thing, it gets a bit crazy at times!

Ah yes, I meant the cured skin of the cloak His greeny skin kinda has to match the rest of the guys in the little army so it needs to stay quite clean. I DO really want to start experimenting when getting extra colours into skin though, it's something thats been on my " You really need to learn to do this to improve" list for some time now.
The loincloth is bestial brown highlighted up through a lot of layers to bleached bone with plenty of careful black and brown washes inbetween, it needs one more light wash and slight rehilight I think.

Millions of layers The skin is mostly glazing, which was super time consuming but turned out quite nice I think.
This time of the year here is generally bright and mild, we get rain but it tends to be in 10 minute super heavy bursts and then dries up quickly from the general warmth and breeze. It's quite pleasant, never really too cold or too hot.

Haha I doubt it will be, it will be bright though. Ireland is basically very bright grey and green. Almost constant cloud cover at least leaves us with mild weather though.

Great work, Iffy! The bona and cape are superb, but you might ( I think you already said this) want to make the skin abit less 'shiny'.

Back!
Sorry for the vanishing act, I just had nothing really worth posting, I've been practicing a LOT with my new webcam trying to record mini's, and it is a lot harder than expected.
The first problem is my poor laptop cannot handle recording in high def, which is fair enough, its not exactly a beast of a machine, so I need to paint on my desk by the box of dark matter that is my desktop. I also need a pretty hefty lighting setup and backing paper.
Positioning the camera is problem no 2. It basically needs to be directly in front of you, between you and the mini. You can't touch it with your arms while painting, and you can't life an arm above it or it ruins the lighting. You have to hold the mini at a specific lenght away from you and not move it closer or farther so the focus does not get ruined, and you have to avoid the temptation of bringing it closer to your face (which I am used to doing while painting!)
Bloody tough, but I am getting there.
Urien_Rakarth wrote:Great work, Iffy! The bona and cape are superb, but you might ( I think you already said this) want to make the skin abit less 'shiny'.
I remedied that! I finished him up with a matt sealer and it removed all the shine, he is lovely now. The squig commission is actually all done now! Will be doing shots tomorrow. I spent all today finishing them up and just don't have the attention span to get a huge group shot done right now, haha.
However, here is the single smallest thing I have ever painted in my life. I cannot stress how tiny he is. He is all that is squig rolled into a pea of metal.
My hands both fell off afterwards, but not before I started quite a lot of work on the Carnivean (who's everblight group is whats on my to do list next )
Still relatively early WIP tabletop. His ultramarine streaks are bangin but might bring them up further, need to chat to owner.
Base is early days and black is not finished on it, need to decide on maw colours. Can’t help but think acid green. I’m on a terrible acid green buzz recently.

Big beastie is a Carnivean, from the Legion of Everblight faction within Hordes, from Privateer Press.
If you're interested, here is a link to the Legion gallery over on the Privateer Press website.

He is the best squig ever, haha The big guy is a Carnivean from the legion of everblight mini's privateer press makes, you should totally check them out.

He was just too wee. I really wanted to put him on a giant base all on his own, but it might have been overkill
This carnivean is from the plastic box set, its a fantastic clip together mini, but I think they do metal versions too.

So am I! The owner wants purple for the insides of the mouth, which is going to be a lotta fun I think.

If he had jowls, I totally would have painted him like a french bulldog or boston. Would have been hilarious.

Terrifying, he is clearly the most dangerous squig out of the whole group!
Final shots of Squiggies up tonight, I am celebrating getting even older so have been slightly delayed I should have an excess of sugar supplied energy to use up taking far too many shots of tiny monsters by this evening at some point. My boyfriend clearly took advice from Wurrzag and the Squigs on my cake, wouldn't you say?
