Nice work - the rich colours combined with the realistic weathering and near-pastels on the stowage give off a kind of cel-shaded vibe - reminiscent of the Borderlands/2 art style. it's the stark black lining and high-contrast panel lines that to it. The purple teddy bear also looks like something from Borderlands.
(apologies for the huge image)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, check out this stuff. I've just ordered some through the internets after seeing this video - I know you said you wanted the Valkyries to be clean, but some of this around the vents and exhausts would look great. (skip to 8:20 if you want to see it in action).
Why thanks guys these were fun to get done once I found my rhythm with how they look, the teddy was a favorite bit of mine I mean in the far future of the grim darkness even a lonely Guardsman needs to hug a teddy! I also think the additions like the bedrolls and tarps make them a bit more interesting too, some were a bit fiddly to paint but I hope i did them justice!
those SPACE CORRIDORS are certainly going in my shopping basket I can get 4 sets of SPACE CORRIDORS with post for about $200 not bad I think! then i get to create a suitably greasy cold void faring ship of terror!
Oh Azazelx what was the vid you wanted me to check out?
You know, looking at what i have and need to do, it is entirely possible I will have a full workable force built this year! which means I can do a fresh army every year at this rate! although I may get sidetracked and do a bunch of terrain like Dave does ...... which again is entirely possible
Hmmmm graven, don't remind me! I have my Realm of Battle board to finish off too! it's a similar scheme but needs to be touched up once I get my table for my table built
Automatically Appended Next Post: Azazelx where the hell did you find that teddy lol!
Dude you know it needs to be Tau :nods: either in a dark blue with light grey panelling or (better yet) dark grey with electric blue panelling, which will then give you the chance to play about with OSL too.
Do it. Dooooo iiiiiiiiit....
Automatically Appended Next Post: And if the first thing you upload is NOT a riptide, I will personally kill a kitten every 24 hours until I see you rip out a riptide.
Thanks Toasty! :-) I should have some progress work in progress shots tomorrow! (wow, did that make sense?)
got me an urge to paint MARBO! now i just have to find him? last i heard he was stalking the postman....... and bringing back ALL your nerd packages! Mwahahahahahahahahahahaha!
I don't think there's too much to worry about with Marbo stalking the Postman! I have heard rumors my Postman is actually Chuck Norris!
and now back to your normal scheduled viewing! it's work in progress day today I wasn't feeling laying brush to model for hours today I needed a bit of a push of inspiration for tomorrow, so today i present you a Command squad and some tank work
first off the rank lets take a gander at the tanks I have 5 i'm working on at the same time! I washed them all with my brown ink and orange wash mix then over brushed with mithril silver once it dried, when that was ready I mixed a little sand with some pva and spackle and added some dirt and mud along the tracks and lower hull, I waited for it to dry out in the sunshine while I fiddled with the ccs.
when my five bristling behemoths were ready I hit them with the good 'ol desert primer aahhhh now I can see them coming together beautifully! again i let them dry for a while and then took them out to the shed for some airbrushed camo designs, I made the brown a little more prominent on these ones as I like the highlights over the brown in the desert yellow.
This is my Pask Punisher I am waiting for wargames factory to release the male apocalypse survivors so i can make my custom Pask who looks like John McClane
Here's the Devil Dog, this little beauty shall be affectionately know as 'Oscar' after my big boy!
Punisher number 2, Frank Castle is his name and shredding enemies is his game!
My Executioner piloted by a madman bursting from the hatch with glee flipping the enemies the V
Who says Leman Russ tanks are crap? how the hell can a tank this cool be crap? right here you are looking at 'Big Willy'
Hi my name is Damian...... and I'm an addict! .......... I've been addicted for a couple of months now I just can't shake it! and to be honest i don't want to! as long as Mad Robot miniatures keeps making such awesome after market heads I'll continue to be addicted! this time I popped their loveliness on my command squad (oh my god my dogs are inside after having a cow leg each and I think I just got double crop dusted and it STINKS!!!) .... *ahem* sorry, where was I? Oh ccs! here thay are
Oh I did do something else too! I've heard a lot of IG talk saying that ADL's are pretty much mandatory now? I was going to make something out of my terrain box and I found the coolcast barriers I bought ages ago! SCORE! so I think these will work for ADL? I primed them black them hit them with a mid grey from the airbrush and then a light grey from above and finally some leather brown around the bases, not sure what direction to take them in now with the banding and damage so input needed there guys! is this enough? I'm not sure how much i really need?
Well then, I hope that was an alright update? sorry there wasn't much exciting stuff today but enough to offer your expert helps on! I can't wait to get that lot all done, should look great!
Lots to love (the dogs, not so much), but the best bits for me are the head on the vox guy and the zenithal shading on your aegis. Sweet Also, LRBT are beasts, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Frank Castle......the Punisher tank Nicely done. Even though people hate on them....I always wanted to run them in force. That many shots HAVE to do something
Cheers everybody! :-) yes Gits, I'm getting a few tanks on the shelf now! i think I have 6 now not including my Chimera's! and I was really stoked to find so much barrier to make into an ADL which I think is coming along well, I'm thinking a bronze dark metal look for the bands around the concrete/ferrocrete.
Graven, thanks mate! the barriers I hope will turn out as I hope! and you can rest assured the dog farts were most unpleasant, i was not pleased at all! :-( they each had a marrow bone literally as long as my thigh and now my backyard looks as if I'm a serial killer who can't dispose of a corpse properly!
Cheers Proto! :-) those heads are ace eh! they're from the personality set from Mad Robot, full metal jacket, Bruce Willis, Sly Stallone, Jason Statham.... :-) enough to bring a smile to any action movie fans face! and no plans for an 'across the ditch' squad as yet though lol!
Automatically Appended Next Post: No Dave, the camo was with an airbrush mate! :-) I'm not that patient to try that with a brush (that and i can't paint like inquisitor wappelious or however you spell his name!)
and KC! long time no beard eh bro! yep, I am totally going with the lots of shots have to do SOMETHING! especially with 2 of them!
and KC! long time no beard eh bro! yep, I am totally going with the lots of shots have to do SOMETHING! especially with 2 of them!
Yea, I need to get off my booty and get paint to brush I think. And this IG dealy youre doing, is REALLY making me think of a way to afford some Guard and do my force Ive planned many times in the past I thought maybe spamming stormtroopers in the rear would buy punishers time to get in close enough to pulverize things
Wow that was a huge update Damo, you have lots of cool stuff going on including dog farts
The barriers are a great idea I think they will look great with some weathering powders...you know you want too
Oh and I want to name the unnamed Executioner Pulsating Percy, cant wait to see Big Willy in action actually that sentence sounds even worse than I intended it to sound
The barriers are a great idea I think they will look great with some weathering powders...you know you want too
Oh and I want to name the unnamed Executioner Pulsating Percy, cant wait to see Big Willy in action actually that sentence sounds even worse than I intended it to sound
lol yes, that did sound amazingly dodgy! but that's great! I'm as dodgy as they come! I was thinking of naming my Executioner after a great device from the movie 'Top secret' it was delightfully know as 'The Anal Penetrator 5000'? a bit much? yeah you're right 'Pulsating Percy' is much more subtle and I think i will toy with some powders on my terrain, that way it doesn't have to be across my entire force but still will bring the table to life
KC, you need to get back into it dude! otherwise I shall get me some Talc and he-bitch man slap you with my pimp hand so hard your beard will fly off and hide under the bed! but I do like the idea of stormies being a nasty distraction in the rear lines of the enemy, I have 10 ready to work on and you'll love 'em
Yea I figured melta vets in a Valk or whatever, and or Stormies plopping in melting some gak with hellguns and whatever special weapons I gave em. That would present an "Oh gak" situation for my opponents. Plenty of time to get those Punishers in to vomit whatever sized bullets they shoot
Dammit....this is making me want to start Guard again. One of these days, Ill get the itch enough and just fracking do it
Automatically Appended Next Post: And this was definitely not a bump. No way no how
Well mr Cracker! it certainly was lucky that that wasn't a bump as i did some painting today! Ooooh! not much just some work in progress stuff on my next Veteran squad this time with melta guns!
I added the splotches and washed them with ink then highlighted the fatigues and washed the whole model again and started on the CCS, I figured to differentiate them slightly I only added camo to their pants
the highlighting was more of a layering process than a blending one for these guys as I want to be able get through them faster but still look appealing to myself and viewers I hope it's not too stark?
Wow that camo is awesome. I'm guessing it was airbrushed with the colors picked out by brush. Man I've got to get an airbrush and catch up to the twentieth century. Being two centuries behind sucks.
Nice work. The alternate heads are a small touch when modelling, but really makes a distinctive difference when the figures come together. I don't dislike the stock Cadian heads or anything, but the replacements make the figures look a lot better.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just realized theres a lot of DCMs on this thread. Whats the hold up Damo?!?! Your flying rodent gak crazyness would fit in well in the Pit me thinks
Lol, yeah guys settle down I will sign up to become a DCM as soon as i'm able! I've been meaning to for a while but it kind of drops off my radar when i don't hear about it for a while! but now it's back....
what? green twister! where?....Oh there :-) no not a twister nor a Kraken (but that did give my a Nerdylicious idea) no that green is actually part of some fake plants I've taken to pulling apart to start making some jungle themed terrain :-) I am going to make the twisters into barriers as they're the right height! and i have a bunch of bigger leaves and flowers to create a cool land of the giants feel!
Speaking of heads Scipio (or artist formerly know as...) I'm waiting eagerly for my new order of heads and the new torso's he released! should be here tomorrow by my calculations! or Monday then it's crazy Nerd time! :-)
Greetings for this rainy day my friends! and i warm my body by painting models more works in progress today! I finished the fatigues on Vet squad 2 now just the boots, packs and guns to go, Oh and the goggles I'm still working out my technique for them as it's only the second squad but once i remember how to do them start to finish I should be right to crank out the rest of them faster
I assembled my 3 sentinels too wow they are enjoyable to build and a really cool looking model! I am thinking of running 9 of them for fun one day
here's the start of the pilots, you'll notice the lower parts are ignored due to them not being visible in the sentinels.
here the 3 of them are with support from unpainted squad2! followed by some individual shots of them
Should have an update on Marbo and the squad finished tomorrow so, what's everyone else been up to? I can see Commander Cain has been marbling up a storm! I mean BLOODY HELL MAN! that looks AWESOME! yep bro you need to re do the whole army now that's much much better looking than my first go I now need to re do my shrine of the aquila so it looks better! honestly you hit that out of the park
Ah well you didn't have an excellent tutor on your first go no?
Loving the camo on the guard, I fancy trying something similar on my guys partly because I love the style and secondly because I have completely forgotten how to paint their armour in my old style!
Great sentinels as well, the new(ish) ones are infinitely more fun to assemble than the old ones which had the monopose legs. Nice barrel placement I see!
Cheers fellas, KC I know just a little choppy choppy and the humble lasgun can look COOL! :-) just got to add the clips tomorrow and then start painting them up, and Commander Cain, yep, dude the new ones are the bomb the old ones... not so much! I'm hoping the three flamers will deter my enemies from getting close :-) and the camo scheme I wasn't really confident to do myself but I thought i needed to do something outside my comfort zone, I figured out that if you do the two colours you only need to highlight the main base colour of the fatigues otherwise you'll go mad trying to get it to look right lol!
Oi nerd! Good to hear from ya! talk about inspiration....ive had to catchup on alot of your work and its all just beautiful and youre quite the prolific painter! I love these ig, its a strong and creative scheme. I'm stealing the round bullet hole battle damage. it'll be on the next guy I paint, hopefully.
Dig the las guns too, are they shotguns? Nice slick way if so. Cool, lookin forward to seeing those sentinels all done!
Cheers
Bebop
Kind of a weird day today! I spent most of the day painting but feel I didn't get as much done as I think i should! but I did do some stuff!
bebop it's good to see you again! it has been a while and I'm glad you like my IG! the lasguns are just modified to look cooler cutting them off at the front hand and adding a small barrel and clipping and replacing the clip feel free to steal any ideas you like that's what Dakka's all about!..... well, ...not stealing!........but sharing ideas!
and KC and Dave! I WILL NEVER STOP! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! in fact...... you want a clue as to my next project? it's a ripper!
got myself a little head today!
well, i got a bunch of them! another order from Mad Robot got the Spec Ops heads some torso's and some other heads too! Steve pops ina little thank you card into the box, but it's really us who need to say! THANK YOU STEVE!
I ordered a couple more dozer blades for my tanks, namely for the punishers and I got about to doing them today too, not quite finished still some burn marks and staining to go
Tomorrows painting challenge! can i do it!
I also started to sort my 10 man Storm Troopers squad! I love love love the torso's I got! so cool and i think will make them just something different, I just need to wait for NV heads to be released for them but tomorrow I shall add some pouches and stuff! I think they'll have some nice dynamic poses so far.
tried to give him rolled up sleeves not the best but I'm trying to decide what arms will work best
What's that? did i just hear a collective voice crying out for a bad dark pic of my Vet squad progress! well, i can't disappoint can I just layed on the metal and washed it.
that's all again for today! lets see what you think eh!
Thanks not_u I'm not sure what arms to get for my Vets ( I meant Storm troopers )? any ideas so they look suitably cool?
and the little card is a nice touch isn't it! last order also had a little Mad Robot sticker on the front of it saying 'You got stuff' :-) a very nice point of difference in a world lacking personal service!
Well it had to happen soon enough right? I had to finally bite the bullet and start to re do Marbo! I thought it was a good day to do it as i was planning on painting the new heads i got from Steve, and i must say the skin tone now is MUCH better than before I hope you can tell from the phone pics? still not finished obviously but a good way towards done
and now for the heads, I wanted to just get the main skin on each face finished today so i can do all the details at once in another session, you can see on some my blending is getting better at that tiny scale some don't look like much but that's due to them having most of the face covered by beards or sunnies etc. in this lot I hope to get a good head for my Sentinel drivers (suggestions on which ones?) and also my Devil Dog and Executioner drivers!
two lots of these Spec Ops heads and these caps are really nice faces! easy to paint and brilliant detail
and that took me nearly all day! i must be getting slow in my old age!
Thanks Graven! twas actually really easy to do :-) just heated the blade with a lighter and used an old toothbrush handle to push the dents into it with a little wiggle then primed them plate metal and washed with a brown and orange mix and wiped it over with my fingers, then a little liquid mask and prime again with desert primer, after it dried I ran some agrax earthshade over the rivets and the joins and wiped it over again with my fingers, pulled off the mask and that's it! simplez!
I just Googled Donald Sutherland in that movie Gits! damn dude that is an uncanny resemblance :-)
Yea some of those heads they do are definitely mocked after real people. Perfect example is in the Spec Ops heads. The one on the far left with the ball cap and glasses. He is DEFINITELY the former American Sniper Chris Kyle. Heres a couple pics
AND with shades on
Im seriously considering putting an order in for some of their heads. Great job on those BTW. As per the Sentinel head, Im thinking the guy with the cigar in his mouth. Why you ask? Simple! Sentinel pilots have to be cocky and ballsy to do their job. And the cigar head just has that look of "Oohhhhh yea, I just banged your wife AND sister in the hotel room" *lights Cigar*
Well looky what i got today in the post! the new Wargames factory 'Survivors' and the sad thing is i only bought them for the use of one torso with a singlet but I can tell you that they are really nicely done! good hard plastic with exeptional details for the size of them, you get 4 sprues in the box to make 30 survivors, 3 sprues that make the main bodies (so you end up with 3 of each character if you wish) and then multiple heads and arms with many weapons to choose from so the 30 men can be assembled to reflect different characters! all in all pretty impressed with this new box
how they come in the box, the sprues actually fit together in the corners to stop any damage to the models, nice touch!
and here's a couple of closer shots to see the details as best i could manage here the guns are really delicate and small but also really good and more detailed than i thought they'd be!
I haven't had a chance to see them against my 40k stuff yet so I'll be looking into how I can use them next week on my rdo's I hope at least some of the parts can be used in my conversions!
So, no paint today but I got a package from Battle Brother lucifer with 20 more Guardsmen and he kindly threw in enough other parts I can make another command squad! which I duly got around to doing so I assembled and added some parts as well as worked on my counts as Pask! John McClane
a few images for you,
the squad all good for priming (painted heads are tacked on at this stage)
and an individual shot of each one, this first one I really like as it uses a head from the Zombie survivors sprue and it is the best African American head i've seen to date in that scale!
and now Pask! I used the tank top torso from the Zombie Survivors sprue, which was actually the only reason i bough the whole box a bit overboard $36 for one torso and a head but never mind I now have what i wanted! I added the Bruce Willis head from mad Robot and then Catachan arms I cut and sanded a bit to fit the body without looking silly (I did that after the pics) overall I think he looks awesome so far and he'll be primed tomorrow
Now i do have a rather important question for you all you may have heard I might have ordered myself a Riptide suit it hasn't arrived yet so I'm working on my colour and style for it, but this is where I have hit a snag I think colour wise I want to use the green I did my sallies in with brighter highlights, purple lenses and white accents. but style wise i'm torn between doing the crisp cartoon style I painted my landraider and Baal pred in or a weathered style like my tanks? I've not seen many weathered Tau models and it always is striking, but i know i can do a really clean bright anime with a clean style?
so what are your suggestions?
Cartoon and clean
Or weathered and worn.
I do have another blasphemous idea for tau too I like to find aftermarket parts for my armies (no suprise there) if i ever do a force I was considering using the promethius bride heads as my Tau bare heads and the watcher helmets for some too? will this be looked upon with distaste or approval? I know the way i can do the different heads will be individual and look good, but I'm afraid they will then take away something that is integral to the Tau theme and appearance?
Heya Nerd, just thought id drop in and throw you some praise, i've been lurking of late, third year exams are coming up and my hobby time has evaporated accordingly! However I wanted to come and chime in that for your riptide i'm going to cast a vote for the weathered option, i know tau are all cartoony and I know you could do it to PERFECTION in that style, but to add to your repertoire of armies you have done slightly differently i think the more realistic look would be very apropriate. (As for the colours, green and purple is my all time favorite combination, you have my full support!) in the same vein the alternative heads would also make them very unique, i say go for it!
Having said this, don't stop your guard, they are the most inspiring guard thread i'm subcribed to atm, and that is saying something!
Hey Nerd, if your looking for tau stuff make sure to check out paulsongames.com. He has some nice not-tau weapons he's been doing or a while. Also if needed I have a tau super heavy walker and some small stuff I might be willing o part with.
Thats a toughy. Simply because Tau are typically neat freaks so clean is usually where they go as far as looks. And it looks good. The problem is thats also....how Tau usually look. ERmm......................clean?
Well I was going to post up a picture of Eva 01 (green and purple for those who don't know) with some damage and then say "It's possible to do anime clean style with battle damage" But can I find a picture to illustrate that? No.
However I will still say that it may be possible to do clean anime style with subtle damage/wear to make it look that bit more realistic.
Well, we have some thinking to do don't we I truly know I can blitz a clean look, but I also love doing things just a little different to not only test myself but hopefully inspire others as well so then they can do other work that in turn inspires me! at this stage I am thinking a slightly weathered look but use my strong highlight work on the higher edges as the model gets higher above the action?
this Tau diversion will in no way impede my Guard too! I love working on them and I can see myself enjoying playing them when i learn how! and there's always more models and heads I can use to get inspired nearly every day! in fact I'm about to go order my NVG heads for my Storm Trooper conversions and i just ordered a bunch of Elysian troopers just for the arms I can use! (so if anyone wants the bodies just ask)
@Theophony: hey dude, what things might you have lying around i could potentially take off your hands? any pics you could throw me?
I am now going to go and try and do some Marbo work and hopefully prime John McClane if the rain stops! then I am going to remove the boiled pineapple fruit cake i just made from the oven, let it cool and have a few slices and a coffee while i jump back on dakka and see what's happening! hopefully i have another update
Nerd what do you do for a living! This is quite the life you do lead, casual pineapple cake and coffee mid wednesday morning followed by dakka, followed by painting, to say I'm envious is putting it mildly!
I think the bit more realistic look of the bottom half sounds like a good plan, maybe not too cartoony on the top, otherwise it might end up looking a little odd!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh BTW I got my Commander finished AND converted a lasgun into a sweet shotgun for my Vet Sgt. Progress and all that jazz
@nerdfest, here are pics of the tau I have, never really started on them.
Devilfish, 3 stealth suits, and 3 sprues of fire warriors, bag of bits including hammerhead rail gun and ion cannon, other bits as well. Not sure if there are gun drones or not (including for the devil fish) as its been a long time since I looked for them.
Also available
Tau super heavy walker. Legs are held together by plastic rod right now, you can change the angels still. I did pin the top together, it comes in two pieces, but is something your skills could easily remedy if needed. The big guns rotate still and the rod you see going all the way through it is just to keep it all together. It was shipped to me from chapterhouse studio with the barrels of the burst cannons busted, so I replaced them with metal rod to the same length.
Let me know if your interested and I'll make you a deal.
Well, firstly i need to give props to the Pineapple fruit cake! that moist rich bad boy kept me going today! warm and coated in butter it was lucky i was lounging in my Pajamas's listening to sevendust while I drank my coffee and painted all afternoon! I know, I know, most of you are feeling pretty sorry for me right about now! it was a hard day! but sadly for me I'm back at work tomorrow night so i can't rub it in until next week!
@Theophony if you're willing to sell me the Tau models (don't need the big ass walker though ) send me a PM and we'll sort something out dude! cheers for the offer!
I may have to take some pics of the cake just to tease the fat man in KC! (I hear he ate him for breakfast)
Now i can show you some of my work from today's relax-fest I got 'ol Brucey baby assembled and started painting him up, as well as nearly finished Marbo too! one more session and they both should be done next week first up is bruce aka Pask aka John McClane aka Mr awesome
and now for Marbo, much happier with his skin this time he looks a lot smoother now rather than last attempt!
Altho i thought the last rendition was lovely, i have to agree that the 'new improved' rambo, is just that, the paint looks alot smoother, a fine job! As for brucey, he has biceps as big as his head! he truely is a beast! I like it!
I think a picture of said cake would be more than appropriate, its definitely hobby related.... definitely....
Automatically Appended Next Post: Lol, Oh J-paint, how could Bruce be anything BUT a monster! it actually doesn't look quite as bad in person though but the depth of field kind of mucks it up a bit! lets hope I can work out how to get some nicer pics of them next time.
Hot gak, those minis are looking good. Bruce puts a smile on my face. Even if he were blowing up my own tanks, I couldnt hate the guy...I mean, its Bruce frigging Willis
And that cake is killing me. Youre a bastard and other insults and so on.

The IG are looking good. The command squad especially. I can't wait to see the Pentinents join them sometime in the near future, either..

Cartoon and clean
Or weathered and worn.
What about a little from column A and a little from Column B?
What I mean is - essentially cartoon and clean uppers, but with mud, dirt, weathering and scratches on the lower parts of the model. (and a bit of dust and grime in the upper, but not heavily). Like someone took a Gundam straight out of the factory and into Afghanistan.
I do have another blasphemous idea for tau too I like to find aftermarket parts for my armies (no suprise there) if i ever do a force I was considering using the promethius bride heads as my Tau bare heads and the watcher helmets for some too? will this be looked upon with distaste or approval? Since the whole "thing" about Tau is their assimilation of other races, there's no reason a good chunk of your force couldn't be "Prometheus Brides" who have joined your Tau State (or whatever they're called) and have been equipped with the same armour as the regular fire warriors. They could even be a "related race" (personal fluffwise) to the regular Tau to explain why they also have funny feet and the wrong number of fingers. (since every other race in the galaxy is clearly related to humans with their 5-fingered hands and flat 5-toed feet)

The first time I read this post it made me think... and now I feel I need to post it.
You've gotta do it! I actually started one myself (there's a catachan torso MADE for this) but sadly I never finished it and have lost it somewhere between moves. Add a goateed Mad Robot head, and you're set!
Thanks Azazelx, you've hit two good points there, the weathering on my Tau i believe I shall approach them as if they've recently made planetfall and have suffered minor damage and battle scars, more dusty than dirty from shrapnel and making their way through ruined cities and the heads I reckon I'll leave the standard helmets but after looking at the brides heads again there doesn't seem to be any reason they wouldn't also wear them due to the shape of their head being swept back
The second thing is I now HAVE to make a Stone Cold! I can't let that go wanting now can I! although personally I liked Val Venis, but I think a guy wearing purple undies and carrying a towel is a bit of a stretch even for 40k, mind you I could say he's a Catachan having a swim on a casual deathworld?
Doesn't look like any paint from me today I have to make a birthday cake for a workmates sons 4th birthday I do enjoy making them though, I've done a couple for her in the past and they got good reviews but I'll see if i can get it done and do some more Marbo work, i really want to finish him and move onto Bruce and his tanks!
Oh and I hopefully will be watching the Hobbit today finally it's out for sale for about $20 at the supermarket so I've instructed the NerdWench to grab me a copy so i can watch it when she goes to bed tonight
Stonecold Steve Austin was exactly who I was hinting about when I posted it haha! Nerdwench haha, my wife would lay the smack down on me so fast if I said that.
Hobbitses, ey?
We must go out and find of of those tricksy hobbitses soon, my precious. It's my preciouses's special day very very soon, my precious, and we knows that my precious loves some juicy-sweet hobbitses!
ahem.
Assuming Fire warriors, you could even have squads with slightly different livery having different heads. As in, helmeted for the majority of both/all, but a few unhelmeted figures in each squad, with several squads being regular Tau while others are Promethians and others from various ranges out there...
Oooh I forgot about those ones! I like the first and third ones the best, might have to just do the usual Nerdfest thing and over buy everything then give what i don't need away lol ;-)
Automatically Appended Next Post: anyone else addicted to candy crush saga? I usually hate those games on phones but this one...... this one has me
I believe those maxmini heads were designed by our very own Major Tom when he was deep in his Genestealer Cult project, I think someone else sculpted them though. I may be remembering that wrong mind you...
But I really [/lurk]ed to tell you I'm really enjoying everything you are doing. I'm not a big IG fan so I haven't had much to say and now I feel guilty for not leaving any replies. Your busting out a load of great stuff though, keep it up!
I know, I don't have facebook either but my dog Oscar does :-) so he gets the requests lol! and Dave that pic cracked me up! I need that on a T-shirt for sure!
Casey, thanks for popping up and saying G'day! sorry you don't like IG, that's a shame and I hope they invent a pill to counter it soon ;-) but you stuck in there and rest assured I shall be visiting my old marines again as well as that exciting Tau force i want to do, I have a crazy idea of painting the stealth suits like predators cloaking? not clear but rippled camo?
speaking of Tau anyone got the codex willing to help me work out a list?
nerdfest09 wrote: Oooh I forgot about those ones! I like the first and third ones the best, might have to just do the usual Nerdfest thing and over buy everything then give what i don't need away lol ;-)
Maxmini are pretty awesome and will usually give you a custom mix of sculpts if you ask nicely. There's only a few of their sets they can't do it with.
nerdfest09 wrote: Casey, thanks for popping up and saying G'day! sorry you don't like IG, that's a shame and I hope they invent a pill to counter it soon ;-) but you stuck in there and rest assured I shall be visiting my old marines again as well as that exciting Tau force i want to do, I have a crazy idea of painting the stealth suits like predators cloaking? not clear but rippled camo?
I don't really dislike them to be fair, they just don't excite me much. I have been enjoying following your progress though as your doing a brilliant job on them! The Tau sound like they are going to be really fun, so I'm particularly looking forward to that.
Hope your post office is more polite, min go pissed that I had cut down a flat rate box, said they would still charge me the $59.95. Tried to explain hat it had been used once and instead of going into the recycling bin I reused it again. She ignored it and told me I either repackaged it or pay the $59.95. Took it home and put in another box I had stuff stored in, had to repackage it, and was lucky enough to get the same person when I returned. It came out a little cheaper than what had been quoted the day before, less money for the post office. They don't need it anyway, they're doing great business . You should have it in two weeks she said.
Stealth suits are MEANT for cool predator cloaking paintjobs. I mean really...even a bad job would make it cool. I once saw a guy that casted a unit of them in clear resin, and THEN painted the parts that werent "cloaked" yet. That unit was simply the coolest thing Ive EVER seen in the mini world.
Hey guys, firstly thanks Theophony! I shall be eagerly waiting to get them from my friendly post office I overcome this problem by wrapping my packages in brown paper first but I feel it must be a post thing as my post lady doesn't smile much is very brusque and business like, she's lovely though and we can joke around but I daren't take up her time too much!
Casey, well, thank you for liking my progress on a model range you don't like much that's actually a pretty good compliment! and the models I bought from Theophony will be the start of my force which I will be open to any ideas or thoughts regarding my work on them i would love to do the idea that KC mentioned on the stealth suits! but sadly I don't have the skills to cast clear copies of them so i'll now have to push my brush skills to do something different? ideas? thoughts? examples?
Azazelx, another good thing to know I never thought about seeing if they can do custom orders I've bought from them a few times and the products are always really nice, resin is quite hard/brittle but clean and with great detail on everything!
Ah crap! I just ordered a bunch of codices and forgot to get the Tau one! DERP!
Ha Ha you deserve this- dork! ....... after I talk to Ovion and GiraffeX I'll telly you how cool it is lol
righto, bedtime for me i'm back to nights tonight so I'll see you later tonight, well, I'll 'read' you later tonight!
I've got the day off today, my box of stuff from Trolltrader arrived - Scibor resin bits, a bunch of Warpaints, some Secret Weapon powders... but I can't paint, because we've got our learners-game of Relic still laid over the folding table I'm still temporarily using for both painting and boardgames.
Looks like at best I'll be spraying some tank traps with another coat of matt, and maybe finishing some eeeevil skull fountains by spraying them with matt and then adding water effects once dry.
O.k, some input needed this morning and I'll be back this arvo
I am seriously considering my 4th force to build and it's looking like Slaanesh marines will be on the cards, bright pink and bronzes, good aesthetic and something I can try conversions with quite happily, I don't want a big force and would like to mainly use models that I like and want to paint so I had a quick (very quick) look through a mates codex and this is what I'm hoping will suffice? any ideas from those chaos lords out there? more on how to use what I want and how to equip them rather than buying more models at the moment
HQ: Daemon prince
Troops: Chaos Marines
Elites: Chaos Terminators, Possessed
Fast Attack: Spawn
Heavy: Forge Fiend or Mauler Fiend, Defiler
I have been ruminating on this for a few days now and as i'm not into the dark gods I'm a blank canvas for the scions to mold my mind to their visions!
And now I', gonna have a shower, pop on some comfy clothes and begin painting some Tanks for my guard!
Their soft cover binding process has been a joke for a lot of years though, especiall on the bigger books, anyone have a General's Compedium that hasn't fallen apart?
I just prefer to pay 30bucks when I have it instead of 50bucks for a much needed book, this is where GW is sticking it to folks, charging inflated prices for over elaborate productions, I will gladly uses a B&W mostly Codex if they made it, I hate Apple and will not buy a 700dollar tool to download a 50dollar download either
Alright, I did do some tank work! nothing exciting enough to twirl your skirt up though, but I managed to run the ink wash around every rivet on my two Punishers as well as nearly finish Bruce and do some gluing of my Storm troopers!
and my DEVGRU heads from Mad Robot arrived today too! so I blu tacked them onto the bodies and then glued on their packs, the heads look so good and I think will make some very different and striking storm troops.
I need to appologise for my lack of painting lately I have simply been burnt out with hobby and work, lacking that spark to put brush to plastic, i've basically been comatose on the couch or bed with the hours moving by in a blur of nothingness, sounds pretty sad doesn't it! but I've got 4 days off in a few days and hopefully I can recharge my Nerd batteries we've got the RSPCA Million Paws walk to raise money for the animal shelter on Sunday and we're taking the furry kids along for some butt sniffing fun lots of dogs, lots of people, lots of games and a good 5km walk, i'll take some pics and pop them up when I get home if no one minds?
Now,my ideas for Slaanesh models I plan to convert a Daemon prince using the plastic kit and some choice parts like the head from the Skaven Vermin lord model, and paint his soft pink flesh in a similar fashion to how i did the sarcophagus on my DC Dreadnought with filigree like tattoo over the flesh, should look really good do you think he should have eyes? or is it more sensory and creepy to have no eyes?
I also want to paint a Decimator Daemon engine those things just look nuts and are huge! as for my troops I shall use mostly what I have lying around, so the bodies will be normal marine bodies with Puppetswar pads and CH pads that look a little baroque http://www.puppetswar.com/product.php?id_product=168 i'll use a mix of both of these styles on both the marines and terminators http://www.puppetswar.com/product.php?id_product=155 speaking of termi's I am using the robed terminator bodies from the new DA release so i can give them black robes to contrast with the pinks and purple, head wise I like the temistokle heads http://www.puppetswar.com/product.php?id_product=89 and for bare heads I want to use some very normal beautiful heads in a mockery of the Blood Angels regal standing as well as some demon style visages like these http://www.puppetswar.com/product.php?id_product=51 any other I don't know about that'd be good?
sorry there's a lot of text today but I needed to talk
Nice work on the guard and I'm strongly in favour of Slaanesh marines. They were my first love, still got 2000pts of them tucked away. I'll try and find the white dwarf article that captured me all that time ago, it's probably the best army I have ever scene, I still find it very inspiring. I'll get back to you later on that.
Im just excited at the thought of someone with good skills, doing a Slaanesh army for once! I think as far as Chaos goes, they are the coolest army out there, but you never see them. And so far, your plans for them are pretty sound IMO. My only complaint, is the sheer lack of noise marines in your plans. I mean...cmon...its a Slaanesh army!
As to the Stormtroopers. Those guys are going to kill twice as much as normal Stormies just because of how elite and badass they look. If not....well then I jinxed them and you should send them to me...to uh... discipline them...yea.....thats it
Oh my friends! you guys always pull me back from the brink of Nerdblock I was for a second getting to the 'sell it all' point! but now, I don't think I can do it ever! glad you think Bruce is looking good, it was hard as he's so iconic I had to get the skin tones right and he doesn't have stubble or anything I can play with for details, just need to darken his eyes up without screwing it up and he's done.
and Gits, thanks man! you're right though, when I look at my projects as much as i love them and see how much I have to do it can be overwhelming to say the least, and five tanks can be daunting, but i have two ink lined and i'll do another one tomorrow then the last two over the weekend, then they should flow pretty quickly as they're just tanks with no detailed bed rolls and tarps on them.
Well, I am pleased Slaanesh is being welcomed by everyone, I have some ideas that are truly not suitable for Dakka but embody the perverse pleasure seeking thrills they lust for! but I have some i can do..... I think I like them as they can be really scary/creepy without being soaked in blood or spikes, so my guys will be pretty clean and have a few choice themes i'll follow throughout like the patterning (should i do it over all the armour on each guy? would look awesome?) and I think I'll try my hand at some translucent skin as well as some minor gs work? I think the FW Vermin Lord sacrificing his head is a good idea and no eyes will be even creepier! and representing his wings by piercing flaps of skin to his arms?
I'll be looking forward to that help working out a little force too and any cool ideas are welcome too, something you wanna see done?
Hmmm giant nether regions on a daemon prince? don't think for a second I haven't thought about that :-) as well as other 'worse' ideas!
Bebop, are you talking about the Bruce head and others? they're from Mad Robot in the US ;-) I freakin' love them all the heads so far on every guard model i've done come from them.
just ordered resin crack for my Slaanesh project! I'm going to just collect some bits for a week or 2 and put them all aside ready for a dive into the dark side! I have Tau to do first which i'm excited about and think will be well recieved!
shasolenzabi wrote: Remember, if you are playing at some game store with the under 18 players, a Daemon f prince of Slaanesh still has to keep it under wraps.
No worries there Shas! I don't have a store in my state and only people I know into the hobby are a couple of my mates so it's all home style game play! I have free reign to be as depraved as I want in that regard, but for the sake of Dakka and my impeccably clean blog.... i'll refrain from anything too grotesque!

dsteingass wrote: I want to ask WHY you have one or two of those inkpen caps, but I'll just backspace.

Well the answer is simple, the wife went to a few "romance parties" you know, where women get together and look at naughty stuff anywho, each time the promoter gave out pens with those caps, and I thought they were silly enough not to toss out
Alright alright, I'll try and add some damn eyebrows! and a bit o stubble to satisfy your Bruce thirst! :-) and you would also be correct, that is his wax likeness at Madam Tussauds in Sydney I took that on my phone last year, I couldn't get his clothes off for a funny shot though? which was a shame as I took mine off first..... bad move by me!
Do not be worried my friend! think of it as just a crack in a door letting you peek into my subconcious! not that i'm at all interested in the contents of man pants, but I challenge any other hetero man to not want to check Bruce's pants if he was in the vacinity?
..........o.k now you can be worried......hell, even I'M worried
You know, i think it's obvious that even talking about Slaanesh starts to corrupt your mind into a filthy cesspool of glorious degradation and filth but hot damn it's fun!
and a little update on my furry kids! I had the three of them washed and groomed today in preperation for the Million Paws walk on Sunday, so i just wanted to share how good they all look today, had to take the pics inside tonight but in the daylight boy are they bright
Issabella
Big Willy & Oscar
and I also had to assemble this guy! arms and jetpack are seperate for painting but man! he's a big ass model!
Willy's always got the best expressions in these pics.
nerdfest09 wrote: You know, i think it's obvious that even talking about Slaanesh starts to corrupt your mind into a filthy cesspool of glorious degradation and filth but hot damn it's fun!
Even better when you get past the whole lust thing everyone thinks it's all about. It's excess in everything; greed, wrath, pride, whatever.
Cheers Not! that's the kind of theme i'm going for, excess in everything, with a lot of saturation of the senses, no eyes, nose etc. kinda tripped out models with a strong influence from Hellraiser and other similar classics!
and Dave..... umm you know there's three dogs there right? :-)
No i have never heard of 3dog before! :-) you know i'm not a gamer dude! last games I played were zaxxon and Myst! and the soundtracks for them were.... well,..... non exsistent lol
Those do look lovely. Our dog, who I basically grew up with, died last year. Dogs are a real blessing.
All that aside - Nice start on that Riptide! Do you have an idea for the equipment outload on the guy? A few days ago I went into a GW store (they got their store birthday coming up tomorrow and I wanted to get some info on the painting competition and maybe buy a mini for goodwill and so the people in Tale of Painters blog get something to see. Well, I ended up getting a Riptide and a bunch of paints. Now I'm a bit stubbed as to how I should equip it. Any pointers?
No pointers yet Siggy, I haven't even got the codex! :-) but from what i hear around the traps the big cool looking Ion gun is quite good, that's what i've gone with on mine, only other thing i hear which won't be an issue with someone like you is to leave the arms and jet packs off for painting *nod*
I have 3 days off in a couple of days and I am tossing up whether to continue with my Guard tanks? or to paint the Riptide? i'll see what people say and the majority of votes is what i'll paint up :-)

Lol, that's exactly what i said when i saw your avatar Bubble!
My kids still mourn for our beagle who passed away several years ago. The twins were two I think, but they still love her and mention her in bedtime prayers .they also miss the puppies we got shortly thereafter, those we had to give away because they were nipping the kids too hard, and the I've wouldn't let me get rid of the kids. In the end he kids will grow up and hopefully one of the three will care for poor old mom, and suffer dad. The dogs would have just licked us.
Honestly my dogs are my best friends, Oscar is just simply the perfect dog for me, and to even entertain the thought that one day he won't be my shadow right there next to me always brings tears to my eyes and causes me to lie on the floor with the big guy and give him the best cuddles! life without a dog isn't a life at all, I think you need them to keep you grounded about what's important in life :-) sitting in the sun on a beautiful day with Oscar lying next to me with his head on my lap just looking at me with those soulful brown eyes makes me wish I could converse with him and let him know how much he means to me, and Issabella is a sweetheart too, she may not show it all the time but when she does you can see her almost trying to tell you she loves you :-) and then there's Big Willy, the newest member of the Nerd clan but has attatched himself to me from day one! that stumpy fluffy tail looks like it will fly off him when i get home from work each morning and he pushes the other two out of the way to be the first one to give me a big kiss! he's quite the passionate dog! he also follows me nearly everywhere and likes to jump up and give me a cuddle where he actually wraps his paws around my shoulders and literally cuddles me. I could wx lyrical for hours about my kids but anyone who owns a dog knows exactly what that is like!
The wife and I keep saying how nice it would be to have a dog again, but then we remember the smell, and our allergies as well as asthma. Maybe after the less furry kids grow up and move out. I still want a pack of dackshunds. 8-9 of them that I will train to snarl on command, and wear rediculous outfits.
I'm a chronic asthmatic myself dude and the Samoyeds fur is a double coat more like wool than fur, you can actually knit from it! great dog for a family like yours! not to mention the temperament they have!
Funny, most people on my family are allergic to animal hair too. We never planned to have a dog but back then my grandma's dog died, she always had dogs and got a new one but she got a bit too wild for granny to handle so she (dog, not grandma )ended up moving into our house. First night (us all not being used to making everything dog-safe) so she managed to snatch a whole roast chicken off the counter while we were gone. Ever since then the dog never ever wanted to move out again.
Anyway, a bit more on topic - I hate to be the voice of reason (just kidding, it's really great being other people's voice of reason. It's so easy ) but my vote is on the IG tanks.
Troops: Chaos Marines
Plasma Guns x2 for 10 men or 1 for fluffy six men squads
Mark of Slaanesh
Icon of Despair (so they dont run away)
Also Noise Marines which there are some new models coming out from FW in the not to distant future. You need a Slaanesh lord for them to count as troops see termies below.
Elites: Chaos Terminators - with lightning claws to take into account their extra inititive, a chaos lord with lightning claws would go well in here to stop them running away as well as Mark of Slaanesh and Icon of Excess so they get FNP.
Saying that this is the load out of my squad led by Abaddon
Chaos Terminators 95
two extra 62
Heavy Flamer 10
Chainfist x2 24
Combi Melta x4 20
Mark of Slaanesh 20
Icon of Excess 40
Total 271
Decimator Daemon engine - very nice model and quite good on the battle field, I dont have one yet... loadout I'd say siege claw and one of the following
Butcher Cannon 36" STR8 AP4 Heavy 4
Storm Laser 36" STR6 AP3 Heavy D3+2 (I'd choose this one due to AP3)
Possessed - Go for it for modelling purposes
Fast Attack: Spawn - not great as Slaanesh ones to be honest.
Heavy: Forge Fiend or Mauler Fiend, Defiler - I'd say two either Forges or Maulers (not one of each) these will be your anti armour units.
Dont forget a Heldrake with bale flamer in the fast attack slot
Thanks GfX I shall endeavor to wrack your brains again about it tomorrow when I've got a bit more time up my sleeve but it looks pretty fun so far! probably need a clearer direction for the termies weapons so i can buy the arms for them but other than that i'm sweet!
sometimes I think a lot, sometimes I think a lot when i'm drifting off to sleep, sometimes i think a lot when i'm drifting off to sleep and come up with ideas o.k you know how i'm doing Tau? and I'm going to be weathering them? yeah? we got that far right! o.k, they're alien (duh!) so i'm going to be presumptuous and say there alloys and metals are going to be alien and different than what we see right? so I tried something by priming my Riptide in plate metal, then washing it with a selection of my ink washes so it appeared kind of like a oily sheen rippling with semi translucent colours I then added my liquid mask and primed it, so hopefully when i pull off the mask his weathering will be beautifully multi coloured and alien?
Primer.
and after the wash...
and now a couple of shots from todays Million Paws Walk with my furry kids, I hope you don't mind? we all just had so much fun and everyone behaved themselves and Oscar didn't even get in any rumbles! and Izzy and Willy attracted all the Laydeeeeees Oscar won Musical Mutt Mats and Willy won happiest dog!
and a couple more shots from my workplace early in the cool crisp mornings we have in Autumn
next three days I have off work so next three days I'll be Painting my socks off!!
Love those pics, looks like you were having a great time. Is that the nerd-wench I spy??
Shots from your work are cool because up here we're just moving through spring. Reminds me of how freaking amazing dakka and the internet is in general. Allowing friends from opposite sides of the planet to "meet" and hang out. Truly awe inspiring when you think about it really.
I love this thread, i went through it all yesterday! It's so exciting and inspiring to see all your projects evolving! And there are some great advice here to!
Nerfdest09, I'm glad you didn't take my suggestion and went on painting that Riptide. What you've done here is a very, very impressive effect. I dig it. Completely different and very ballsy to do on such a rather large model but it works. I'm sure it didn't take too long either (at least compared to things like sharp-edge camouflage or silliness like that. Good job, mate!

Thanks guys! I like to mix it up a bit so you know where my head's at I really hope the Riptide works like i want, he's now been masked and primed and painting begins tomorrow, and we all enjoyed the Million Paws walk, Gits you are correct, you did spy the Nerd Wench! she was SO gakky I took that when she wasn't looking polished and at her beautiful best in her dog walking clothes lol and yeah that's why I post the occasional image of outside at work, it is a beautiful part of the world down here in Tasmania and I know how lucky I am to live here, I was reading another thread and they were talking about seeing stars for the first time! the sky is so clear I see the iron pot, the milky way, southern cross whenever I want at night, it's simply breathtaking when you think about it!
@coun7, welcome aboard the good ship Nerdipop there are some really awesome and talented people who honor ME buy following, so feel free to jump in and ask anyhting you want about anyhting, we're just a big 'ol group of friends here
Siggy, that's just the underneath of the paint I will be doing all that silly stuff as well! lets hope it works as I want it to! the effect will be subtle and may not even be apparent, but you know what they say, nothing ventured nothing gained!
Good evening my friends! I do have a couple of slightly blurry pics for you all I got me a couple of packages in the mail today and opened them to my joy finding Tau models from Theophony and a mixture of stuff including my Elysians so i raided the only bits I needed, the arms and went about gluing them onto my Storm Troopers!
So, that's all the boys for my 10 man Storm Trooper squad, next problem is what colour do i paint them I'm thinking the same green as my bedrolls and stuff on the tanks and then black webbing to give them a spec ops swat kind of feel?
wanna see something cool?
wanna see something cool for my Tau force?
wanna see an XV-9 crisis suit getting built?
Riptide tomorrow for me, i have to stop fiddling around and actually get brushing eh!
That oily metallic just keeps looking better and better each time I come back to look very alien. If you don't do it for all the models, you definitely should do it for the stealth suits. Do half the model that way and the other half of the model as normal painting to look like the camouflage unit is just starting up.
Almost makes me sad that I got rid of my tau....oh wait they went to a good home
Gah! The problem is Damo.....that your Stormtroopers are already looking badass. Which means when I get around to building mine, I cant just go with normal run of the mill junk and a decent paint job and say its done. Because I will constantly have those in my head telling me how lazy and ugly and whorish I am. You sir, are a true friend
Looking foward to the XV9, well I'm going to have to close my eyes when you paint it as I dont want one, no really I dont want one lol and your going to paint it so nicely.
Word to ya mothers dudes! cheers for the input on them, the stormies look great i think and i'm super happy with them, those arms I was concerned would be a bit skinny but if I don't compare them to the super hulky catachan arms then it's fine
I have a couple of things on the go today so bear with me first some minor progress on the Riptide & the XV-9 commander, I did the metal primer and ink wash oily look on the XV-9 as well but didn't add as much weathering as it's a smaller model, then primed both him and Rippy with Angel Green primer first up is the XV-9, nothing special just primed and a little glossy while he dries.
And here we have the Riptide, he was primed Green and washed with Nuln oil, then I have overbrushed him with angel green warpaint and then done 2 more passes adding yellow each time and overbrushing downwards so the colour hits the higher edges, still much much more to go but I can see how he'll look and I'm pretty excited now
And now for something a little different, I'm entering in Gitsplitta's Mantis Maker painting competition so while I wait for the parts to arrive i made the base for him I wanted to try a little converting and a little (very little ) greenstuff work to evoke the Badab war theme for the model, excuse all the pics but i want to make sure i cover the work in progress and parts I am using as i go.
parts for the base
start of the gluing and position
a little greenstuff for legs position and fingers on his hand
and now a little more basing and primed black with a light white overspray
that's it today sorry I didn't realise how tricky the XV-9 was to assemble! and it took longer than i thought due to gluing my fingers together and then breaking the gun and gluing my fingers to the gun trying to fix it, then gluing my fingers AGAIN to the base when I was looking at it but tomorrow should see some good progress with Rippy, if I do enough I might break out the good camera for some shots?
The Tau suits are looking good. With the "alien" metal weathering they'll be very cool.
Good start to your mantis base. Just a "Little" green-stuff work...Just to build a pair of legs and a hand... What's a lot of GS work to you, build the whole marine?!?
Verynice, Damo. The Tau are coming along nicely, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the weathering experiment works.
The MW base looks really good. That's some nice gs work you did there. How did you do the white overspray? Did you just spray it in the air and let it drift down? With the base largely built, I'm really curious what you're going to put on it.
Ah friendly banter over the corpse of a marine! this is what Dakka was made for :-)
I was just going to be boring and paint up a Mantis for Gits comp, but after seeing the work some are putting in i want to do something i don't usually do as it's outside my comfort zone and do a mini diorama with it, I intend to have a rather angry Mantis warrior Terminator striding through the battle over crushed body of a Space shark! that fits fluff yes?
YB, the overspray is easy man, yep, it's painted black first and then the white you just pass over the model from a little higher than you would normally do and only from above so the dark bits stay dark and the light parts are easy to pick out.
I also hope that the weathering looks good, I won't be too upset if it doesn't come across as obvious as you know what they say, nothing ventured nothing gained right? and if it works then it'll work well and look wicked on the vehicles! :-)
and Bubble, if a dead marine upsets you! stay well away from the old Games Workshop and White dwarf books! they weren't infallible back in the day, now excuse me while i go and adjust my walking frame.....
Hey everybody! I sure got stuck in today with a very tedious and time consuming job today! that Riptide is a challenge so far, especially how I am painting it with a brush and no airbrush work lots of panels and lots of angles for highlighting, i managed to do 3 stages of the build up of highlights with probably another 3 or 4 to go next week, but he's looking good and when the other bits get painted white I think he'll be even more awesome!
lots of rather large pics as I don't know how to resize them in photobucket yet
the other thing I've been excited about is the Mantis Maker comp Gits running I don't know why but I'm really into this one! I had another part arrive in the mail today so the obligatory shot to show I'm not cheating.... his head.
and his head just started, sorry for the god awful blurry crappy shot but it's only to show i'm doing it from scratch
so to make you happier with some clear and focused shots now, i have FINISHED the base for the competition today! it shows a rather unfortunate Space Shark ungraciously sprawled dead on the battlefield ready for the Mantis Warrior to stride over him, and also sets the tone for the paint work I'll have to do I really like how this turned out, I think the biggest thing is the fact I sanded the Shark with sand paper to make sure he laid flat against the base and appeared the be weighted as he sunk into the dry earth. love to know what you guys think?
I sometimes see tribal style tattoos and markings on some images of the Space Sharks so i took liberty and added a small scroll on the rear of his helmet as you never really see the back of them in pics
Today was fun and I inspired myself can't wait to get painting again next week! it looks like the roster will be kind enough to give me 3 solid days of paint time should see plenty of Rippy work and if Gits bits arrive I'll certainly be trying to finish him too!
I agree, the slow sinking into the mud/ground is subtle but really nice, often when people do dead marines on bases they seem to be suspended by a knee or an elbow....yours however looks like it obeys the laws of physics, go you.
I love how even in death he has a firm grip on the pistol.
I know your not finished the Riptide and you prolly know this already but it really needs some contrast. maybe you should make gears and joints behind the armour oily metal?
You've really managed to get some really dynamic poses on those storm troopers, they look really great!
And that dead marine looks pretty sweet as well, at first i thought it was that old RT-era casualty (which I really like btw) until I realized you'd done it yourself, so great job!
Thanks guys I think when done the Riptide will turn out very eye catching, I didn't AB him as it's a lot of fiddling around and the weather isn't the best for being in the garden shed plus it's nice to test myself and do such a big model with just brushes, I will wait until I finish the highlighting and add the white accents before I decide if i want to re do some mechanized joints, I like the look of the whole model being the green but if it looks bad i'll remedy it but I think it'll be fine...... trust me
laws of physics for the win eh! my Mantis Maker challenge looks how i envisioned with his weight sinking him slightly into the earth, and of course he still has a tight grip on his bolt pistol! he's a space marine dammit they're trained to never let go!
I am really hoping the rest of bits turn up today, I want to get a feel for the pose and how i can hopefully pull it off, his green will be similar to the Rippy but I'll use more glazes as i get to the highlighting on him so he does indeed look different only thing I'm unsure of is which paint scheme for him? I've chosen the original Space Shark theme to really tie the Badab War into the model but still want the Mantis Warrior to fit in, so it's a researching I will go!
Well at least you're trusting me Styro! not even i really know how it will look when he's done? I have an idea and i hope it matches! and yep! my AB is in the shed so I need to run a power cord across my backyard and through the kitchen window each time i want to fire her up! not the best set up but i don't use it much :-)
You guys know that there is no need for an exhaust system when using acrylic paints right? I lust prop up a board to keep overspray off my paint bottles. Nice squished marine there Damo!
Lol, yeah i know, I used to have it set up in my spare room but the compressor is quite big and noisy, plus it's easier to clean outside and cackle like a mad surgeon when i'm painting so the neighbours can hear me! :-)
And Az, man those are cool mini's i've never seen them before! I totally am going to go through the site now and see what else they have for me! :-) you sir are a legend!
Nerd,
hey man long time no visit man you been really busy glad to see you churn out awesome stuff. loving the riptide i havent purchased one yet myself but yea. and the guard tanks look fab
cant wait to see more man keep it up
thanks a million nOt_u I was planning on painting purple lenses on him, now i'm not so sure! you may have derailed my entire Tau force with that comparison!
LOL! I have my Necrons all Greened with purple cloaks and sashes and dynastic chest marks, I liked the color blend that worked for the Hulk, and of course the Joker!
The shattered city was cloaked in a roiling smoke, though not from fire but gunfire, while the acrid tang permeated even the filters in sergeant Artamus helmet, runes flashed where he had taken hits and with a grimace he unclasped his helmet and removed it, mag clamping it to his armour and exposing his naked face to the city. Flashes of orange and bright white lit up glassless windows high up in the structures and the shrieking of ordnance was near deafening to his enhanced aural senses, brother fought brother amongst ruins that once had been a proud city it's denizens through their architecture proclaimed to all the light of the Emperor shone apon them, now, nothing shone nor gleamed, all was destroyed riddled and pock marked by bullets spewed forth from two chapters of mighty space marines, these brothers once united in the protection of the imperium now turned against each other as savagely as the animals they bore their names from, the Mantis Legion & Space Sharks locked together, now entwined for eternity in the recorded history of the ages......
And there we have my finished entry into Gits Mantis maker challenge! I shall now go and copy it and pop it up in his thread too, I hope it's recieved well
Looks incredible nerd! Really smooth and polished, (like all your stuff)
If I had to make a teeny weeny little constructive criticism it would be the teeth, he would appear to be exposing his nashers rather! Maybe an ever so thin line of either black or flesh on along the top would help?? Having said that its a major hassle for something so small!
Agreed, the Termie is the main part of the story and I could have gone crazy and chipped and bloodied the Shark but chose not to, I am going to sound defensive now but the teeth are fine, I think what you're saying is the teeth blend too much into his top lip? I did attempt to add some wash to line the two bits but being such a small area it kept staining his teeth! and i don't think Marines drink coffee?
Better pics! seriously! omg lol! I spent ages trying to get a decent shot and thought i'd done alright except for a slightly blurry side shot, what needs to change? I figured the in focus shots showing the colour and details, other I took were too bright and washed out while these darker ones were more accurate and looked better. I don't know what to do? pics are my worst part and while i have the gear I just can't seem to get it looking right, i'll be honest I was happy I thought i'd done alright
and now for some not suprising although typical news, I'm not feeling the Tau so do I finish the Riptide? or do I put all the Tau up for sale?
Nah Shas, not feeling the Tau sadly :-( I wanted to so badly but think it'd be better for me to sell them off and focus on my Guard and Slaanesh stuff.
Thanks Dave, I think he's very 'Damo' :-) and Knightly yep mate, I use yellow to blend into the green to highlight him, I actually used the cover for firedrake as inspiration for the colour ;-)
and i am selling my Tau this is what I'm getting rid of, I'll go and pop it up in swap shop too.
1x Riptide
2x Remora Drones
1x XV-9 battlesuit commander
8x Drones
1x Devilfish transport (includes Hammerhead parts extras etc)
15x Fire warriors
3x Stealth suits
I just wasn't quite passionate about them to keep going guys sorry :-(
Shame about the Tau dude, though I get where you're coming from.
Beautiful work on the mantis base - would you mind a little constructive criticism though?
Did you drill the gun barrel? As the barrels are out of line with eachother. Perhaps widening these with a model knife would furtherimprove your already epic craftsmanship
The termie looks great! A really nice little di(e)orama with lots of character while still remaining quite simplistic (as in not overworked)! I would however agree about the teeth, though I would use some sepia/devlan-ish wash and painting it on rather than washing. But having said that, I didn't take notice about the teeth before someone pointed it out. So, good job!
Mwhahah yes nerd, sell off all those terrible aliens, rejoin the imperium...and to a lesser extent the slightly depraved sensation lot.
You understood exactly what i meant by the teeth, it was more the lip transition, but having done an almost identical thing today i see what you mean, washes are too imprecise and painting a line is too pronounced, i was wrong to critisise the almighty nerd, god of paint!

Thanks dude, I think the teethgate scandal is only due to a 'once you see it' scenario and the images prolly don't help either, I have since re visited the teeth and they look a bit better now, I chucked a quick pic up in Gits blog

Oh J *waves hand & looks away coyly* it is a tad tricky sometimes isn't it, I thought it looked pretty good considering but it only takes one comment and then everyone (including myself) notices it! Oh well lets hope it doesn't impact on results eh! Oh yeah package on its way to you too
Ahhh pics, the bane of any painter. you should try the DAkKA picture gallery. It has auto corrector and usually makes your pictures beautiful.now I sound like a doc a fanboy.
thanks cam :-) I really appreciate the comment on the Mantis Warrior, I think he's pretty good and am quite proud of the end product! gives me focus for more learnin'
and yeah the Tau didn't fill my mind with ideas and jobs i can do with them, where my Guard and the Slaanesh project are constantly going around in my head! in fact I started the daemon today....
Right, after much soul searching and negative thoughts I picked up a brush first time since the Mantis Maker comp so after a two day break I've finished Marbo! and I must say, I'm 100% happier with him this time around, skin tones are better (although pics aren't ) he just looks how i wanted him to when I imagined the concept
I also began to convert my DP, and when I say began, I mean very early workings by deleting the symbols on his chest with GS, more layers to come.
anyone got any ideas to really distinguish a Slaanesh Daemon Prince?
Thanks Shas & Gits! you really think he's amazing? wow! cheers Gits I appreciate that comment seriously! you see, that's what constructive criticism is for, last attempt had some great feedback (some even about nipples) and it pushed me to strip him and have another go! and i'm glad I did as I like this version much better :-)
Pinks and purples for Slaanesh seem to be the norm don't they, how would purple feet blending into pink then almost white skin at his head and shoulders? i'm thinking of doing it like I did the Helbrute skin for my mate Mitchy, so with veins and things showing?
Dude, Marbo is pretty darn astounding! It's ouzing with your mad skills!
It's a shame the Tau are getting benched but I'm honestly not surprised, I haven't been enjoying the new release at all. Your paint scheme was looking very promising but the miniatures under it just weren't worthy of your time from my point of view.
With Slaanesh I think it's worth taking a step back and decide exactly how you want to represent them. There are countless interpretations of excess which would work. I've yet to find that article I promised you but I've thought of somewhere it might be which I'll check after I have a coffee.
That Marbo is outstanding, mate. As for your DP, given that you're doing him (ostensibly) male, why not incorporate (c)sm elements into him, like he is the apotheosis of the sm ideal? Rather than a typically daemonic face, for instance, go with something really handsome, almost like the Helldorado daemons: Fallen Angel - Greater Daemon of Pride -
Oh yea thaw a good idea really! Is it too late for you to change the style of the head on the demon prince? Because I've got to admit that the thought of your DP having a really pretty face and muscles with random demon aspects sounds tracking awesome
