Wow, thanks so much everyone! I feel much much better and more positive now after the faith you put in my painting skills, it's a nice feeling to have others actually WANT to see you do something, it makes me want do something spectacular (or at least as speccy as i can do it)
yes, I am a bit disapointed in myself about the Tau but there's no point doing a job when you're heart isn't in it 100% my Marines i loved, my IG I'm loving still, and the ideas I have for Slaanesh is really pumping me up like crazy, especially with the colours and my cartoony style i favor now
speaking of Slaanesh, can I tease you with some random thoughts i had for them? o.k you do want me too! that's great i'll do it later tonight lol
Marbo First Blood pt2 I feel will be pure deadly death on the table! I can't say how much more pleased i am with the paint, but can i ask if the pics of him as bright as they are were better than others? i'm trying to gauge what you guys want with them?
back laters guys, you best bump me later so i can update my slaanesh ideas for yo to feedback me! trust me you'll like the theme!

Loot Damo's Brain!!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
YES YES loot my brain!
I'm a little tired and just about to head off to bed but i shall impart some of my ideas that are bouncing around in the Nerd noggin'
O.K Slaanesh are excess and pleasure right? gratuitous embellishments and colours etc. things that don't make sense in the perfection that is evil! so, sensory deprivation makes perfect sense depriving your senses makes the others heightened and that may be a good theme to explore for the army? so some having a lack or removal of sensory organs then making an example of the others? for instance perhaps a model with no eyes may have exaggerated ears for better hearing or large nostrils for scenting prey? as well as that i want things confusing the mind as to what you SHOULD expect when looking at Slaanesh, for example having a marine fully kitted but with the head of an innocent child or as mentioned an angelic face?
also, i am a HUGE fan of the Hellraiser series of movies! so of course I want to impart some of the creepy demon horrors that make it soooo good! black leathers, flayed and pinned skin flaps, piercings, no eyes, things like that (except for the movie with the guy who shoots cd's from his head! )
colour I want the normal pinks purples and blacks but with my shadowed filigree designs all over the armour and some armour blending in with the flesh of the model and having veins visible through translucent skin merging with the designs on the armour?
O.K too tired now to function..... love to see your thoughts on it guys

I love me some brain loot and this is a good haul. Although i did just spend half an hour looking for something because of it. As soon as I read about your ideas on sensory depravation I remembered that I had read someone's thoughts on that before. I quickly found the white dwarf that article I posted was cut from and what do you know, there was another page cut out which has gone missing. I can't find it anywhere and now I'm really sad. If anyone has WD289 please do me a huge favour and post up that missing page! Oh and Damo might find it useful too...
Basically it's a great idea and you should read that article if you can get a hold of it. From the pages I've already posted you'll see the miniatures that exhibit the sensory deprivation even if that page can't be found.

The CD spitting Cenobite was from Hellraiser3 Hell on Earth. And I agree....he was stupid lol BUT they did have Barbie in that one, the former bartender that breathes fire and throws the Molotov cocktails. Man... I love me some Hellraiser. You're making me what to do a similar army now Keep it up Damo Cenobites would fit into a Slaanesh army perfectly

Mwahahahah! yes this is going to be quite a involved project I feel, the whole theme and ideas are going to cause me to learn GS work and conversions much more detailed than what I have done so previously, some ideas aren't suitable for Dakka but I may be able to get around it? :-)
may I also ask for a little bit of contribution from the plethora of amazing Dakka minds, would you be kind enough to post up some models (plastic or resin only) that i may not have seen that could be useful for this project? I am looking for manufacturers that are hidden away from the mainstream!
I just had a look at those pages casey! some damn cool models there that I must at least do as good as! I now have some ideas for a Dreadnought (that I haven't got in my list at the moment) the marines in my force will be fairly boring and basic but with some flair and additions but the Spawn and larger models, Daemons, Lords etc will be the focus of my attention, I can't wait to get started!

Kromlech have:
Sek'hara, handmaiden of Pain (demon princess)
Bedlam Fraternity Shoulder pads and heads
The Kromlech Legionaries Legs (standing, running, kneeling) could all work.
http://stores.ebay.com/Kromlech-Bits-and-Minis/_i.html?rt=nc&_sid=137867022&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1513&_pgn=1
Maxmini Have:
Steel Crow heads (might fit with the sensory modification theme)
Dragonfly wings (depends what way you go)
It's worth looking through the Anvil Industries stuff to see if anything takes your fancy, both in terms of armour and also weapons and other parts (Grill heads?)
If you don't mind metal. Hell Dorado has an awesome range of parts to cannibalise, as does Malifaux.

Post by: Casey's Law
Hmmm, so many options! That WD article inspired me to build 2000pts of extensively converted Slaanesh Marines. It was my first army and I was young so I can't bring myself to take pictures but I used a huge range of GW components. My bible was that old sticky in store Mail Order book and my specialist games catalogue.
These days we have tonnes of miniature ranges to choose from, I think the best thing to do is to first define the style you are trying to achieve. Once you know that it's easier to find the components you need.

Yeh, sorry man, I was a bit tired and forgot what you had already said. You've given a fair bit of detail, I'll have a think about miniatures, ideas and such to see what what I can come up with. I should have a folder of ideas somewhere for Slaanesh.
Off the top of my head right now: The Blood Angel kits are packed full of great stuff for Slaanesh conversions. Diaz and classic Daemonettes are awesome. Pain inducing bodymods. The Prince of Excess artwork from the best codex of all time. Nudity? If you go with nudity I'd suggest male as well as female. Cheap miniature statues might be good fodder for bigger conversions.
31272
Post by: Battle Brother Lucifer
Damo, if you ever need them, I have 9 (I think) Diaznettes looking for a suitably perverted home
Even if you don't plan on fielding a unit, if you want one or two for bits I can hook you up
Also, new Marbo looks awesome, great work, especially like the 5:00 shadow!
Sad to hear about the Tau, they were the first army I bought more then one thing for, but I never continued with them.
9217
Post by: KingCracker
Yanno Casey is right, the Blood Angel kits would have some really good bits to turn into Slaanesh styled marines. Some very beautiful faces that would look perfect with pale white demonic skin. Not to mention a use for the nipple armor and it not look silly

As an extremely brief Thread Hijack - I decided today to get one of my half-finished techmarines out of a case and finish it. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the little ...blighter, so I've decided to work on another one that's assembled instead. Now, he's the old Metal one with the Power Axe, but at this early stage I can easily replace the unattached left arm which currently has a plasma pistol. Since he's a techmarine, and only likely to see much action in friendly games, the exact loadout isn't going to be a huge deal, but does anyone here have a suggestion on what to arm him with to be relatively decent? I'll be painting him as a Dark Angel, FWIW. So, he's got the poweraxe, a servo-arm, and a _______(!?)
Apologies to Nerdlinger, but I'd rather just get a quick answer from one of you guys who I've been conversing with here lately than post in the larger untamed and easily-ignored parts of Dakka.
39666
Post by: GiraffeX
Azazelx it depends on the role you want the techmarine to fill, assault, ranged or backfield/repairs. Once decided you can choose from a ranged or special weapon to go with your power axe. PM me if you wish to discuss further.

The insanity has indeed started! I planned on spending time making sure i had a very unique Slaanesh force with some things I haven't done previously and while I was looking at the Daemon kit before work I thought "I know how about I sand the armour plates smooth and paint freehand on them?" then that thought turned into "I know, how about I sand the armour plates smooth and then sculpt greenstuff things on them to look really Slaaneshy?" so i chose the latter
please be aware this is only my second attempt at using GS for anything other than gap filling or bulking out something it has only taken me about 45min to get to here but I am at work so I can't spend more time yet, I've pretty much just got the bottom of the face done and started on the nose, still a long steep learning curve ahead but I hope it looks at least promising?

I'm thinking quite hooded eyes for 'her' and hair framing the face and the entire pad?

Thanks theo, still a long way to go, it may or may not work in the finish but I'll have a red hot go today when i wake up and see if i can finish it, it'll be painted as metal of some kind so it can look slightly baroque out of proportion, I'm looking forward to doing the hair and eyes now, i think they'll make it tie in much better?

For "reusing" your sculpted stuff and adding additional details to flat surfaces, you might find some great details somewhere that you'd like to get a press mould of and "cast" in GS. If so, this is the stuff you want to get:

speaking of sculpting, I scrapped the pad i was sculpting as it didn't live up to my lofty personal expectations, but I've started re doing it with a creepy face inspired by Steve Wang's awesome work http://www.myspace.com/stevewangfx/blog/125821874 if you don't see something there to make you want to create then you should take up something boring like stamp collecting! (which i also do........ don't judge me)
I should get a fair bit through the new sculpt and pic up tomorrow.

Post by: Ovion
I'll throw in and say:
1: Oyumaru (Instant Mold) is great stuff, I use it quite a lot.
2: Milliputt, while I keep singing its praises for general use over Greenstuff, for casting, Milliputt is just outright better, being you can brush a super thin layer of water over the mold and it'll make the milliputt fill the mould just that much better, resulting in greater quality / detail.
3: LEGO!
Making casting-boxes out of Lego (flat panels at the bottom, walls with bricks, pack the bottom half with soft instantmold, then press your part into it, allow bottom to harden then press more instant mold over the top, and press a flat plate on the top) makes 2 part molds, that ensure a stable, high quality cast.
43045
Post by: Casey's Law
I'll third the Oyumaru praise. It's one of my favourite tools and I even managed to get a crude three part mould with it when I had to cast my Tyranid Warrior torsos. It's the perfect press moulding tool, I actually have a little plastic tub I use instead of Lego so I can close it up, travel with it, make tiny moulds and apply pressure to the lid if I'm making something complex like the Warrior torsos.
And thanks for that blog link Nerd, I'm bookmarking it for a closer look later.

Small update for you today I have been home with a pretty nasty chest infection so even though I've got some time on my hands I'm not fully in paint mode! but I had to do something right? yeah I did! so I started working on GFX's Celestial Lions Librarian the blends are a bit rough but I managed to block in all the colours I'm using and just about finish the blue armour on him. I reckon he'll scrub up a treat for him when he's finished!

Thank you gentlemen! I should be able to do some more on him tomorrow I also opened my supply drop and got stuck right in to converting my Slaanesh Daemon prince! I couldn't wait, and i think he will look creepy and suitable!
I cut the arms from the Skaven vermin lord and cut down the weapon he had so it was shorter then added the blade from the Daemon prince box set, then I carefully cut one of the heads off Nightmaw, the one that most closely resembles a picture I saw of a Slaanesh Marine a while ago at first I thought the head would be too small but side by side it's the same size as the ones in the kit! go figure!
anyway, here's the first assembly pinned together.
and after a little bit of GreenStuffing around I got the basic body filled in and shaped, now he looks better!
more work tomorrow on him and hopefully I can get him primed and base coated so you can have a better image of him all ready to killlllll! love to know what you think so far

Just a few times to see how well it works. (I got it just before I moved). I was able to make a press mould of a decorated lotr shield to replace another that had gone missing and the replacement held up all the detail. I haven't done any 2-part moulds, but if you check out the X-Wing thread, one of the posters there has done heaps with it, making damaged and destroyed X-Wings and Ties.

Wait no more for progress my friends! but I need to say firstly I TOTALLY LOVE THIS DAEMON PRINCE! seriously I had the image in my head but I'm pleased to say at this stage at least it's going exactly as I planned! I'll show you a few pics down the bottom of this post but firstly, what else have you done today Damo? Oh not much, just went through my supply drop and assembled some models! but what did you assemble?
well, firstly I found this beautiful lady hiding in a box, don't know if i can use her yet but I love the model!
next thing i had to build was my Slaanesh Chaos terminator squad led by a Lord suitably kitted the same! I wanted something not overly chaos-ey in looks but that i can still impress upon you how sinister they are, so I chose the new Dark Angels terminators for the task, studs and robes work for me lol!
and the Scibor body i intend to 'Lord Up'
Yeah, I can hear you saying they're good but too small do you have anything bigger? (that's what she said.... ) anyway..... yes, yes I do...
Wanna see how big he is?.....
Now for lots of pics of the Prince! I love it and can't wait to get into him some more! I've included a few shots if only to try and show you the colour more than anything, it's night now so it was a bit difficult but I think the last one should entice you for more action!
not entirely suitable for children or work.....
Yeah that last pic is closest to an accurate pic of him....
Phew! hopefully now with this update you can really see the direction I want to go with these guys? a bit of 90's GW & 80's rock interspersed with some tastefully evil conversions the normal troops and fighters will be mostly 'standard' although I will use a lot of cut & paste converting using different arms/heads pads etc. while the bigger things i want to do more with, like my 2 Maulerfiends and a Damo version Helldrake
anyway, lets see what you think so far

GS work, harms choice and paint are amazing Nerd
The only thing that I don't really like (personal likes, It suits the model very well) It's the head.
I was thinking of a more dragon/reptilian head
Waiting for the final product ready to be amazed again

Oh yes the DP is looking excellent so far Damo and so many new toys to play with as well. I feel your embracing Slaanesh rather too easily.....
An idea you could do a marine with a cat o nine tails.
Loving all the leather and studs on the terminators they were a good choice.

Embracing Slaanesh a little too easy! yeas i will say i think I am getting into the swing of the army rather fast! I tend to have the concepts and ideas in my head for ages and then hope with my fingers crossed that i like it when i actually get building and painting, the Tau didn't work but these guys sure are!
So only one who doesn't really like the head eh! I will admit I originally thought reptilian or vermin style, but when I got my bits I couldn't go past that particular head as it spoke to me of what Slaanesh truly is, and it reminded me of these couple of pics (which i promptly can't link now.... )
I like the cat-0-nine tails idea on a marine I will certainly be adding that to someone soon! although I am having trouble deciding what to do with the Decimator? for such a large model I want it to be quite good and would like to add some conversion to him but i'm not sure what to do? perhaps one arm ending in Slaanesh type tentacles? do I make them or can I pinch them from another model range?
I'm gonna go and paint something now.......

Yep.
You could make some of them more mechanical than others as if it sprouts or builds a new arm every now and then and they slowly become more organic and daemon-y over time...

Yeah, the crab claw has been part of the basic Slaaneshi ethos since the beginning.
Also, a breast.
And fishnets.
The pink-purple blending on the DP looks great. Very effective. The Eagle's wings in the DA iconography could be kept/worked with fluffwise if your CSM are descendants/former marines of the original Emperor's Children. You can also follow the old-school Slaanesh vibe to a greater or lesser extent by putting some Cow/Bull-type heads on some. Either from GW Beastmen, or these ones that Vic just released:

I'm glad they are conveying enough Slaanesh so far! I worked the tendrils today and sanded them smooth so they are more like tentacles and tomorrow I will try and add some suckers to them to complete the look.
and YES, I am having WAAAAAY too much fun with this mindset of freakish conversions, it's like I've been able to indulge a few things, I have my IG where I'm enjoying the additions of aftermarket parts which add the personality to them, I have my Marines where I love the repetition of the scheme and now I have my Slaanesh where I can let myself experiment with how i believe they should look!
so, what else should i do with the mauler heads? I'm thinking of gs'ing some organic type flesh to connect them? Automatically Appended Next Post: also quickly, are these shots i've been taking recently just with my good camera on the workbench better? clearer? more what you want to see?

Great job Damo! Looks great and suitably aggressive.
Actually I read something last night and thought of you. Do you have a 3e Rulebook? There is some really nice daemon fluff in it, serious grimdark stuff rather than the modern wishywashy stuff for the kiddies. It's on the two pages after the blast marker and templates. There is other stuff throughout the book too. Very 'gothic horror'!

Casey, no mate i haven't read the 3rd ed rulebook but I shall go and browse ebay and see if I can track it down! thanks for the heads up! I do much prefer the older fluff, writings and images they really were much much better and darker, you actually saw pics of marines getting shredded by shot or eviscerated!
Oh Shas! 'Tentacool'= 'Tentacle' looks like we're heading into bad dad pun territory ... keep it up!
GFX I'm happy to internet roll a combat with you to see who wins? although first we best find someone who can play lol!.........
and now onto some progress! I painted some more of the Daemon Prince and he is coming along nicely! suitably nasty looking, suitably creepy and exceptionally Slaanesh! I am quite proud of the paint so far and he should be finished tomorrow!
any ideas yet on what to name him? after Kitch's comment I was thinking Baal'sac?

but paint should be finished tomorrow!

Post by: KingCracker
Is that loin cloth....cheetah print? If so...kudos to you sir Very nice looking, the more paint you put on it, the more it sells that fudged up head its grown. Very nice work
Also I had bought some springy eyed glasses for the next time we chatted as a fun way to answer with a "Gday!" but the kids thought they were too fun and broked them real good
30672
Post by: Theophony
I think you should call him "pinky", now you just need "the brain" and you'll be ready to take over the world Narf! Love the veins rippling all over him, like a lab rat of slaanesh hopped up on so many chemicals that he's about to explode.
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Narf! not a good cartoon if it featured this guy! :-)
yes, i am going to aim for a cheetah esque skin on his loins, as Slaanesh are known for being a very swift fighting force and it adds to the old school style :-)
do you think I should add some softer veins on him as well? or will that overdo him? i'm liking the head more myself now as the darker mouth is drawing the eye giving him a focal point, when the teeth get done it should be spot on! :-) any thoughts on the tongue? should it stay dark or fade to purple on the end?
14070
Post by: SagesStone
Looking suitably creepy now. When he's done he's probably going to be the stuff of nightmares.

Post by: Casey's Law
Ugh... that's vile, Nerd, mate.
Great job! Love that translucent effect you've given it with those veins. Eugh, makes my skin crawl!
As for 3rd e, I might be biased because it's when I started but I think it was the pinnacle of grimdark. Before and after it the theme waters down a bit. The rulebook is a glorious tome of gothic horror, my absolute favourite aspect of 40k. I hope you find a copy, it's comparably as brilliant as the indulgently complex 3rd CSM 'dex.

whoa... now that is what I call a true demon... the veins look really creepy...I dunno how thin you can get the thought about smaller veins... depends on your skill... but if you feel more are needed... do it...that thing reminds me of that overkill monster of the league of the extra ordinary gentlemen... almost to the end of the movie...remember?

Thanks Az and everyone :-) I'm pretty chuffed that the veins look good and sub dermal, I have actually just finished him tonight but I don't have enough good light to get a photo or twelve! I darkened some purples and added some darker veins as well as painted the wrist wraps as leather and glossed them for a subtle sheen, lets hope it comes together as a whole, his head is my favorite part but also the most concern as far as detail goes :-) but you can have a look in a few short hours!

Lol thanks guys! now he's done i can move on to other cool models for the army! I should really put him on the gallery now shouldn't I? I can't wait to see what else I can imagine for the Slaaneshi minions! I think the veins are going to carry through on larger models, I'm still struggling to get the lines cut into 'Pinheads' head I had an attempt at one and the hard part is getting the lines deep enough to see without deleting the details of his face, any suggestions?
....... Oh, what's this in my pocket?.......
........MODELS! The Lord's other arm arrived this arvo, had to get it ON!

and it looks like a couple of hours and i've pretty much got the filigree done on Spurt'aan! looks good and will look better when he's done and all the parts come together nicely
Yes, I do use an airbrush but only VERY basically my method of madness is use Army Painter Primer for my base colour then my dodgy old airbrush to only shade the darker parts I want, everything else is washes and brushes, the washes connect the two shades and the details bring it home!
I hope you can see what i'm doing on Spurt'aan? took a few pics to try and show you all.....
any ideas if or where I should add a darker or lighter shade to the designs on him? or am I in danger of going ott? and I should wait until he's all done for an opinion?

Thats a tough choice to be totally honest. Some of the absolute coolest armies Ive seen were nicely done Nid forces. Those bugs just take paint like nothing else. Then again, a Mechanicus army is an entire one off build where EVERYTHING needs to be planned and built. So could be very cool, or incredibly too much to tackle.

Love the vibrant colour and additional "texture" you added to this model by freehanding. Most of the time, this one looks like a big machine but you made it look overwhelmingly organic. Good stuff!

Thanks Pyriel & Siggy, big praise from you two heavy hitters of the paint world! my plan was to get him to look more organic and if he looks it to you then i've succeeded!
I have NEARLY finished the Terminator Lord but I don't want to show you and then show you something that looks nearly the same tomorrow! so, I've decided to just give you a teaser pic of a bad quality phone photo Bwahahahahahaha!

Nerdy, congrats on the win, and also, 6 is the sacred number of Slaanesh, so 6-12-18 Daemonettes is right

Post by: KingCracker
I dunno if you can pull it off but full on velvet would look pretty Slaanesh-y if you asked me. But again I'm not sure how well that would work with paints. Either way I love the idea of the different prints. It's cool and different not to mention very old school feeling

Awww shucks guys i seem to be feeling that a bit lately! I am just in the mood for paint lately and it seems to just be working well in my favor and i'm more than happy to show you all my 'pink' secret (yes it is strange no one has pulled me up on my names yet..... yet) it's actually very easy and not tricky at all, I was really happy with how it turned out today as it was the first time i'd painted the pink as it would be on my troops etc. I followed my usual technique and gave him a base coat of 'the army painter' Barbarian flesh then washed it with Baal red (or Carroburg crimson) watered down some Barbarian flesh and started highlighting and tidying the armour up, then i added P3 Carnal pink (appropriate eh!) and kept highlighting finishing with pure carnal pink, and that's all not hard and blends really easily which helps a lot.
Well, what do i paint next? still waiting on some marines to use for my troops as well as some bits (still!) for my termies but I have my Slaanesh herald who shall be slicing and dicing with my Daemonettes i can probably paint? or hopefully my parts turn up then it'll be termie squad awaaaaay!
thanks again for all the positive feedback lets hope my next ones are just as nice! i'm looking forward to doing something decent with the Decimator!

Thats amazing oh great Nerdy one, love the head its a really nice effect, I also really like the zebra skin cloth, came out really well.

Comp win, your best work so far and page 100! You're on a roll sir!
I love your work on the lord although I'm not sure I dig the zebra skin as a concept. Still, the painting is wonderful. You must have leveled up when I wasn't looking!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Ha, leveled up nah I reckon I just found an army that lends itself well to my particular style of painting them try me with something I don't really like and it'll be noob level soon enough
still waiting for my supplies to drop! hopefully tomorrow or even this arvo? and i'm also still looking for tentacles if anyone has some? either the Talos ones preferably or the Maulerfiend ones if someone's not needing them? I'm happy to pay whatever! (shrill voice of desperation there )
I did do something today but not my usual thing, I was fiddling around with my art stuff and it's been literally 12 years or so since I sat and did any sketching or painting, I thought i'd just rough up and see how my skills are not as good as i'd hoped but I just went with the flow and ended up drawing this which i'm going to gift to Gitsplitta as he's the most Mantis-ey guy I know and it may end up on the wall in his nerd room! anyway I hope you like it, my style is strange I know......

The head looks amazing. I'm going to guess you didn't use the GW stippling brush for that (wish I hadn't bought that without seeing it). Any tips on how to achieve that nice mottled effect? Where is the head from?
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Thanks guys! 100 pages and i don't feel old at all! lol! and you can quote me right now that there WILL be at least another 100 pages! I promise!
Bruticus the model is a Scibor one with the head already attached, to get the mottled look I washed it with purple ink and at different times during the drying i just dotted some more ink on to darken spots on his head, when I do my Demonettes I'll be using the effect on their exposed skin so I might try a little tute if you want?
