Nerfdest09, I'm glad you didn't take my suggestion and went on painting that Riptide. What you've done here is a very, very impressive effect. I dig it. Completely different and very ballsy to do on such a rather large model but it works. I'm sure it didn't take too long either (at least compared to things like sharp-edge camouflage or silliness like that. Good job, mate!

Thanks GfX I shall endeavor to wrack your brains again about it tomorrow when I've got a bit more time up my sleeve but it looks pretty fun so far! probably need a clearer direction for the termies weapons so i can buy the arms for them but other than that i'm sweet!

sometimes I think a lot, sometimes I think a lot when i'm drifting off to sleep, sometimes i think a lot when i'm drifting off to sleep and come up with ideas o.k you know how i'm doing Tau? and I'm going to be weathering them? yeah? we got that far right! o.k, they're alien (duh!) so i'm going to be presumptuous and say there alloys and metals are going to be alien and different than what we see right? so I tried something by priming my Riptide in plate metal, then washing it with a selection of my ink washes so it appeared kind of like a oily sheen rippling with semi translucent colours I then added my liquid mask and primed it, so hopefully when i pull off the mask his weathering will be beautifully multi coloured and alien?

and after the wash...

and now a couple of shots from todays Million Paws Walk with my furry kids, I hope you don't mind? we all just had so much fun and everyone behaved themselves and Oscar didn't even get in any rumbles! and Izzy and Willy attracted all the Laydeeeeees Oscar won Musical Mutt Mats and Willy won happiest dog!

Good evening my friends! I do have a couple of slightly blurry pics for you all I got me a couple of packages in the mail today and opened them to my joy finding Tau models from Theophony and a mixture of stuff including my Elysians so i raided the only bits I needed, the arms and went about gluing them onto my Storm Troopers!

So, that's all the boys for my 10 man Storm Trooper squad, next problem is what colour do i paint them I'm thinking the same green as my bedrolls and stuff on the tanks and then black webbing to give them a spec ops swat kind of feel?

wanna see something cool?

wanna see something cool for my Tau force?

wanna see an XV-9 crisis suit getting built?

Riptide tomorrow for me, i have to stop fiddling around and actually get brushing eh!

That oily metallic just keeps looking better and better each time I come back to look very alien. If you don't do it for all the models, you definitely should do it for the stealth suits. Do half the model that way and the other half of the model as normal painting to look like the camouflage unit is just starting up.

Almost makes me sad that I got rid of my tau....oh wait they went to a good home

Gah! The problem is Damo.....that your Stormtroopers are already looking badass. Which means when I get around to building mine, I cant just go with normal run of the mill junk and a decent paint job and say its done. Word to ya mothers dudes! cheers for the input on them, the stormies look great i think and i'm super happy with them, those arms I was concerned would be a bit skinny but if I don't compare them to the super hulky catachan arms then it's fine

I have a couple of things on the go today so bear with me first some minor progress on the Riptide & the XV-9 commander, I did the metal primer and ink wash oily look on the XV-9 as well but didn't add as much weathering as it's a smaller model, then primed both him and Rippy with Angel Green primer
first up is the XV-9, nothing special just primed and a little glossy while he dries.

And here we have the Riptide, he was primed Green and washed with Nuln oil, then I have overbrushed him with angel green warpaint and then done 2 more passes adding yellow each time and overbrushing downwards so the colour hits the higher edges, still much much more to go but I can see how he'll look and I'm pretty excited now

And now for something a little different, I'm entering in Gitsplitta's Mantis Maker painting competition so while I wait for the parts to arrive i made the base for him I wanted to try a little converting and a little (very little ) greenstuff work to evoke the Badab war theme for the model, excuse all the pics but i want to make sure i cover the work in progress and parts I am using as i go.

parts for the base

start of the gluing and position

a little greenstuff for legs position and fingers on his hand

and now a little more basing and primed black with a light white overspray

that's it today sorry I didn't realise how tricky the XV-9 was to assemble! and it took longer than i thought due to gluing my fingers together and then breaking the gun and gluing my fingers to the gun trying to fix it, then gluing my fingers AGAIN to the base when I was looking at it but tomorrow should see some good progress with Rippy, if I do enough I might break out the good camera for some shots?

The Tau suits are looking good. With the "alien" metal weathering they'll be very cool.

Good start to your mantis base. Just a "Little" green-stuff work...Just to build a pair of legs and a hand... What's a lot of GS work to you, build the whole marine?!?

Good work as always Nerd.

Verynice, Damo. The Tau are coming along nicely, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the weathering experiment works.

The MW base looks really good. That's some nice gs work you did there. How did you do the white overspray? Did you just spray it in the air and let it drift down? With the base largely built, I'm really curious what you're going to put on it.

Ah friendly banter over the corpse of a marine! this is what Dakka was made for :-)

I was just going to be boring and paint up a Mantis for Gits comp, but after seeing the work some are putting in i want to do something i don't usually do as it's outside my comfort zone and do a mini diorama with it, I intend to have a rather angry Mantis warrior Terminator striding through the battle over crushed body of a Space shark! that fits fluff yes?

YB, the overspray is easy man, yep, it's painted black first and then the white you just pass over the model from a little higher than you would normally do and only from above so the dark bits stay dark and the light parts are easy to pick out.

I also hope that the weathering looks good, I won't be too upset if it doesn't come across as obvious as you know what they say, nothing ventured nothing gained right? and if it works then it'll work well and look wicked on the vehicles! :-)

and Bubble, if a dead marine upsets you! stay well away from the old Games Workshop and White dwarf books! they weren't infallible back in the day, now excuse me while i go and adjust my walking frame.....

Hey everybody! I sure got stuck in today with a very tedious and time consuming job today! that Riptide is a challenge so far, especially how I am painting it with a brush and no airbrush work lots of panels and lots of angles for highlighting, i managed to do 3 stages of the build up of highlights with probably another 3 or 4 to go next week, but he's looking good and when the other bits get painted white I think he'll be even more awesome!

lots of rather large pics as I don't know how to resize them in photobucket yet

the other thing I've been excited about is the Mantis Maker comp Gits running I don't know why but I'm really into this one! I had another part arrive in the mail today so the obligatory shot to show I'm not cheating.... his head.

and his head just started, sorry for the god awful blurry crappy shot but it's only to show i'm doing it from scratch

so to make you happier with some clear and focused shots now, i have FINISHED the base for the competition today! it shows a rather unfortunate Space Shark ungraciously sprawled dead on the battlefield ready for the Mantis Warrior to stride over him, and also sets the tone for the paint work I'll have to do I really like how this turned out, I think the biggest thing is the fact I sanded the Shark with sand paper to make sure he laid flat against the base and appeared the be weighted as he sunk into the dry earth. love to know what you guys think?

I sometimes see tribal style tattoos and markings on some images of the Space Sharks so i took liberty and added a small scroll on the rear of his helmet as you never really see the back of them in pics

Today was fun and I inspired myself can't wait to get painting again next week! it looks like the roster will be kind enough to give me 3 solid days of paint time should see plenty of Rippy work and if Gits bits arrive I'll certainly be trying to finish him too!

much bro love!............... Damo

I agree, the slow sinking into the mud/ground is subtle but really nice, often when people do dead marines on bases they seem to be suspended by a knee or an elbow....yours however looks like it obeys the laws of physics, go you.
