Hey, nothing like reliving your child hood right? I like re watching all of the old shows I watched as a kid.

I just finished the 2nd Gaiden Series of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. It was ok just like the previous Gaiden Series. There's really no point to either series unless you really love the universe that much. I would just recommend the main show to anyone and nothing else.

Awesome, btw, what's your take on soul eater? I saw a clip of it that was a fight between some chick with a scythe and some odd s&m looking thing. Visuals looked great and action was smooth. Also plan to watch that darker than black anime that was brought up earlier in the thread.

I liked Soul Eater, except the end was poor. iirc it was rather contrived as is often the way, but definitely worth a watch.

Missed the Darker than Black mention.

Shaman King is not too bad also Flame Recca but they also lack in the endings

A series I thought good but not seen mentioned is Shangri La
Might be worth checking out

EDIT
watched the first episode of Kinos Journey
Seems a strange little anime
So I will watch the series for sure.

There was an emptiness in it which is not a criticism, just a sense of longing and sadness that is poignant.
Maybe that is just this particular episode since the town is empty!
further editing to correct poor typing

You'll find moments of happiness rather rare in that show. Sometimes it gets downright wtf.

Favorite episodes are A Tale of Feeding Off Others (Ep 2), Colliseum 1&2 (Ep 6&7), A Peaceful Land (Ep 12), and A Kind Land (Ep 13)

Not just that episode. It's not always emptiness, although there's a lot of that, but poignancy abounds in general. It's a very, very good series.

Anime (アニメ?, [anime] ( listen); English: /ˈænɨmeɪ/ ( listen) or /ˈɑːnɨmeɪ/) is the Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of "animation". The definition sometimes changes depending on the context.[1] In English-speaking countries, the term most commonly refers to Japanese animated cartoons.[2]

Animation =/= Anime as the term is used in most Western countries.

By your logic South Park is Anime.

Far from me wanting to be pedantic the thread has been a useful grapevine for exchanging titles and getting some good tips on what to watch.

A general animation thread for MLP would be a better place to suggest that show.
But given the fanbase that exists on Dakka am sure most people have already been made aware of it.

As you are doubtless aware Anime usually refers to a style of Japanese graphic. If we start listing general animation the thread loses its purpose.

If you read the Soul Eater manga, it's gotten really good lately. Much better than the anime's ending; though the manga is still ongoing, it's looking like a promising end.

Madoka was an EXCELLENT show; so good that I'm running a role playing game on campus based in Madoka's universe.

I've also started watching Nijichou and K-ON; both radical departures from what I usually watch (Black Lagoon, FMA, DBZ, Gurren Lagann, etc).

Why did that have to happen, and so randomly, with no prolonged shounen-speeches or anything. Just gets her head bitten off...

Almost as bad as the fate of Hughes, but at least mustang gets a proper vengeance for that...

Its sort of like Batman Dark Knight. When they said Harvey was the brightest most incorruptible person and Joker had to ruin him to make an example.

In the same way Mami served the same purpose ( and the evil side succeeded ) she was the strongest, and most mature, and level headed role model of all
the Magicas Then it was a "rude awakening" if you will, and the rest of the series kicked off in pure business, full throttle.

*SPOILERS FOR MADOKA*

Spoiler:
Well, I wouldn't say that Mami is totally incorruptable...Episode 10 shows that she's pretty screwed up (look how quickly she resolves to commit a triple murder-suicide).

And Soul Eater is Bleach meets Nightmare Before Christmas, put simply. However, it's not as overhyped as Bleach, and doesn't suck quite as much, IMO. But YMMV.

Might give it a try then thanks.
Part I hated most about Bleach was the hype it seemed to get and the fact that there seemed like there was no challenge for the main characters at all, them simply being unable to kill whatever they came across with one hit being a minor inconvenience to them at best.

I want to get the Dragon Box sets, however, no release of Dragon Ball Z has the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack (the american soundtrack heard on Toonami) The Japanese soundtrack is great and purist donkey-caves will argue that the only way to watch it is in original Japanese with original soundtrack, but sue me. I love Bruce Faulconer's music and Chris Sabat will continue to be one of my favorite voice actors.

The only thing that attracts me to the Dragon Box sets is the flashy extra bits, like the Dragon Book with artwork and stuff.

It was an...odd show to be sure. A lot of wasted potential. I'd rate it at average for an anime. The plot was pretty refreshing, but like I said, soooo much wasted potential, this being primarily pointed at the characters.

Also, I just finished watching soul eater. Great series...until the last last episode. Seriously that has got to be one of the worst endings I can ever recall seeing.

The lyrics don't make much sense, it's just supposed to be a fluffly, cute little song, I think. And the penguin suit makes sense when you get to a certain point in the series...

That said, Azumanga was a great show with quirky humor and a nice departure from all the action shounen I usually watch. I recommend watching it subbed; though the dub has some good voice acting (Sakaki is voiced by Izumi Curtis, and Kaorin is voiced by Asuka Langley Soryu!!!), the sub captures more cultural references and subtle language humor that the dub can't match due to translation reasons. (some jokes make no sense translated into English)

That can be said of most dubs, especially with the comedy ones. Like the one in NHK about the character for myriad being mixed up when she's reading from the book.

Just started watching Gundam AGE, which started 1-2 days ago. Surprised to find a sub and looks interesting.

Apparently it's story will cover 100 years and the protagonist will be replaced by his son then grandson.
Seems like it's based on the same U.C. the original was (due to the painting and legend about the original Gundam being humanity's saviour), but uses AG for it's date. Haven't seen unicorn so don't know if it swapped over at all.

The main Gundam is based on the design of the first, which is surprising seeing as it seems to be over 100 years old as it starts in A.G. 101. Only problem with it's design to me is for some reason it has a spoiler on the back.

Enemy mechs seem kind of cool, like a cross between Zoids and the Angels from Eva.
Having what seems like three forms. A humanoid fighter like normal, a winged flying sort of dragon form and a four legged sort of wolf form.

Don't worry I revealed nothing more than what was announced at the expo where the series was announced at, you find out pretty much everything except the 100 year part from the first few minutes. The 100 year part was the sort of focus of the PVs for it.

Just started getting into Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex, while painting up some Infinity minis (to get me in the mood! )

Have to say it's pretty enjoyable, and some impressive animation for a series (they are certainly better at using short cuts these days than they used to be).

However, the credits music at the end has replaced Star Trek: Enterprise as my most disliked TV show music, it's fething terrible

I have recently been watching Durarara!! and I'm surprised that its actually interesting. The first 5 or 7 episodes were really boring since they were essentially background information episodes with some new events thrown in. I don't like how the show feels too much like a novel though. Hopefully the last 10 episodes (I'm on 15 atm) are good because everything has been building up pretty well.

While Durarara was good, if you're finding that interesting, I'd highly recommend Baccano, which was made by the same people, before they went on to make Durarara, and I consider it the better series. It shares a lot of similarities in style - both series are primarily character driven and consist of multiple intersecting stories rather than a single narrative, but while I found Durarara dragged on a bit at times, Baccano told what I found to be a more interesting story in a much tighter fashion - it was only 13 episodes, half the length of Durarara, plus three more released as an OVA, and told nearly as much story, with never much of a dull moment.

Interestingly, Baccano doesn't tell everything in chronological order, but rather jumps between three consecutive years when different parts of the character's stories where happening:
1930: Mafia fighting and sets up how the series main feature (which I won't spoil) came to be, as well as eventually what happened to Dallas Genoard (see below)
1931: The events of the last journey of the train known as the Flying Pussyfoot (the majority of the story is focused here - this was one crazy train ride)
1932: The search for the missing Dallas Genoard, and some of the characters combining their knowledge of what's happened to piece together more of what really went on in 1930 and especially in 1931 on the train.

While that might seem overwhelming at first, each time the series jumps to another timeline for wee bit it tells you which year you're in, and if you pay a little attention early on you get used to it surprisingly quickly due to the differences in what goes on in each year. The way the story is told allows the series to be building up to something awesome you'll see later (which may have actually happened earlier in the timeline in some cases), while telling an exciting and action-packed part of someone else's story at the same time.

In addition, Baccano, similar to Durarara, but I think to an even greater extent has no main character, rather there are around 18 characters who could all be considered "main", and while again that might seem confusing, the series does a really good job of getting you to grips with who's who, which of the timelines they're active in, and the relationships between each of them.

It's one of the best series I've seen at telling a compelling story in an interesting way and fleshing out many characters at once, it does it in half the number of episodes of many series who manage such things only half as well, and on top of that, it does in with style.

For an example of said style, and a glimpse at most (but not all) of the main characters, check out the opening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msg8ypnLqaw. (yes, the series will help you get to grips with all those people in reasonably short order, and you'll care what happens to most, if not all, of them - although in some cases not because you like the but because you want to see them come to a nasty end, and the series certainly has some of those).

I've watched a fair few anime, my three favourite probably being Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and One Piece.

Recently watched Steins Gate which I thought was a very well made anime, also watched Chaos Head which I didn't like as much.

Two new anime this season which show a lot of promise are Mirrai Nikki and Guilty Crown. Guilty Crown reminds me a lot of Code Geass which is a good thing.

Just finished watching Kaze no Stigma, only to learn that there'll never be a second season because the author croaked. Planning on digging up his corpse later to yell at him.

Saw Angel Beats a little while ago, very well done. One of those that you really want to watch after the credits of the last episode, or you get a real "Dark Tower" vibe to the ending.

Currently watching Fruits Basket (excellent, good pick for cooling off after something like Requiem for a Phantom or Fate/Stay Night), and When They Cry (not a good pick for cooling off after something like those two).

I don't feel that hentai is appropriate for this thread.
I also hope that it won't degenerate into a debate about what should be on the thread so it would just be simpler imho to start a new hentai thread.

It as been really useful for hearing about anime I might otherwise have missed. Potentially it could get closed down if pornographic references start cropping up:

... Mal, I hate to point this out, but tentacle rape is actual fairly rare in hentai (unless it's specifically about demons or aliens or something). Far more common in manga. And American movies. (such as Evil Dead with the trees and vines scene)

Blood-C is OK, but kind of meh. Every episode is basically the same until you get to the last couple where they do the big reveal that leaves a lot to be desired IMHO. There's supposed to be a movie coming out later that follows up where the series ends, and I'm hoping that that will be better.

I haven't read the light novels, so there may be even more in there which got left out of the series, I'm not sure.
The full thing is 16 episodes - the series has 13, and there were three more as an OVA, which add mode to it. The 13 episode series does a really good job of tying pretty much everything it introduces up by the end, I felt, and the OVA episodes tell something of a "and what happened next" story - certainly not entirely separate, but if you didn't see them you wouldn't be horribly unhappy at just seeing the 13 as the series does come to a good conclusion by the end of it's run.

I just finished Durarara and I'm going to be honest. It sucked. It was so slow that it was painful to watch. The pacing is just awful. It moves at the speed of a snail and this is not to its benefit. The show has a great set of characters and plots (since it essentially has 3 arcs covering 3 novels), but man...the pacing just killed it for me. After a while I stopped caring since every episode dragged on and on. It almost seems as if the show is about nothing at all which makes you think "Why even watch this again at all?"

I don't consider Pokemon as anime.
The only reason I can come up with in defense of this position is that is was on the telly.
If it was on the telly it was a cartoon.

No I don't really understand my BS either

What really made the show for me were the characters. If the characters weren't as interesting as they were the show wouldn't be as great as it is. Its hard not to like most if not all of the characters simply for being who they are.

Once you get around to Season 2 you'll start to see how different it is from Season 1. Its a great season, but in a way it goes back to everything Gundam has done before in the UC timeline.

If you really like UC Gundam, I highly recomend Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, one of the best animes period. Full Stop. I don't know about the 'reboot' a new translation, but the origional is epic.

I am on episode 17 of Victory Gundam...wow...just wow...I think the only thing ol' Tomino did that was more depressing was Space Runaway Ideon.

Has anyone watched Toaru Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index) and A Certain Scientific Railgun ?

I have only just discovered the theme song 'Only my railgun' (I had a totally different idea on what it was...damn false advertising on railguns..=o[ ) and have been playing it non-stop for hours. I have wated a few AMV's on youtube and it looks over the top and silly as hell with sterotypical japanese charactors and big bouncy boobz... I can accept all of that if the story is top notch. Plus index looks rather cute.. so my question is, is this worth spending the time watching? Or is it like DBZ where a fight takes three weeks of episodes with all the talking and flashbacks?

Thanks for any help dakka.

PS Pacific, I highly recomend you get the movies for ghost in the shell. I highly enjoyed them much more 'cyberpunk mindfeth' then Stand Alone Complex where it was more ' what awsome thing is the major going to do next'. The manga's are also easy to find and damn good reads. GiTS 1.5 Man-Machine interface is rather good also. Ghost in the Shell II is alright but it focuses on Motoko Arimaki who isn't the major although she is in a way.... nice drawings just ol shirowsan loves to draw his womens crotch shots a little to much.

If you enjoy GiTS also try Appleseed, Dnune Knute is just awsome, everything the major should of been, while Briarios is a good straight man and comic relief like Bauto is for the Major.

It's worth it, the fights are interesting and at times tries to stay somewhat realistic. There is also a railgun, the main character has electric powers. So using magnetism she can flick a coin at extreme speed (one rips through a car's engine and flips it).

The video for Only my Railgun is accurate, everyone gets different super powers.

I sometimes watch it when my friends are, they were watching this one where people could magically summon things. Unfortunately I ruined it for them after expressing my own train of logic given those circumstances and effectively won the anime. Or at least they told me that I won the anime, did not know you could win that.

No, the ending made perfect sense actually. The ELS ship became a flower because they realized that Setsuna wanted peace. To Setsuna that flower represented peace and because of Setsuna the whole war stopped right there. The whole movie is about understanding one another which is interesting since in older Gundam shows essentially no one understood each other to the point of wanting peace..in most cases you saw the opposite of that happen.

1. blue exorcist.

Very good, great range of charactors. however, dont watch if your a hard out Christain. Some contence may offend.

2. valkyria chronicles.

Not the game, but definalty based on it. Tear renching in a few places because PEOPLE DIE!!! just had to cap that. Keeps to a WW2 like theme with a hint of fantacy rather than an anime like FMA which does something oposite to that. If you liked FMA, you will love this too.

Well, 8th MS Team drew me into the Gundam universe, so it'll always be my favorite. I love the character development and the overall plot...plus, it had some awesome fight scenes (Gouf Custom FTW). The original series was a close second for me, but I just never got to watch Char's Counter Attack

Since we're on the Gundam topic, did anyone play Federation Vs. Zeon on PS2? One of my all-time favorite games

I can understand that, but most people who love 08th MS team love it for being this uber realistic Gundam which Gundam never has been. I've seen too many people want a Gundam show about this old grizzled protagonist and all of the mecha is dirty and its all realistic.

But back to what you were saying, you really need to watch CCA! Its a great way to finish off MSG, Zeta, and Double Zeta? Have you gotten to see Zeta and Double Zeta yet?

I played Federation vs. Zeon when it first came out. Its so much fun, but Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam just made it all the better by adding the Zeta, and a whole plethora of MS on top of the Federation vs. Zeon MS.

Oh I almost forgot to mention I played the SEED version for the PSP as well. The MS aren't my favorite, but the gameplay is a huge improvement over Federation vs. Zeon and Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam.

Personally, ive seen them all except Victory (which I am about 10 episodes into right now) and Turn A (which ummm...well humm..). I personally liked Zeta and 0083 as two of my favorets. For AU gundam it would have to be After War Gundam X, I dunno there is just a 'quark' that I like about it.

Right now I am watching Legend of the Glactic Hero's which is a 110 episode OVA with 3 or 4 movies and some Gaiden (side stories). It's about a interstellar war between the Free Planets Alliance and the Glactic Empire (which seems to be based of Germany in the 1850's to 1870's). I am 23 episodes in and I am completely hooked. Giant space battles with 50,000 ships aside no force fields and a over arching plot between Count Louungram from the GE and Admeral Yang Wen-li.

This has to be one of the best shows I have ever watched (anime or normal movie). The charactors have so much depth and just as you get to know or like someone, blam, there toast. Killem all Tomino couldn't of wrote a better show. Another thing I like about it is that the space battles are all set to classical music which just workes for me personally but not may be everyones cup of tea.

I would highly recomend people who like space opera's starwars, 40k, etc) to check it out on youtube. All the movies and episodes are there although it's all fan subbed as it's never been dubbed into english offically or even subtitled into english offically. I just can't say enough good things about this so far. The amount of thought and vision that went into this manga and anime is just outstanding and I do hope one day that we get a english translation of it...same with After War gundam X, but that's another story.

Last anime thing I saw was Appleseed: Ex Machina.
Yes, finally got around to watching it.

My preference for it (anime) is rather focussed.
I'm also over 40 and not Japanese, so most of what passes for it these days is not only not made for me, it just does not appeal tp me in its subject matter.

Always preferred Armour Trooper Votoms to Gundam, anyway - but Crusher Joe had its moments.

This is all so true. I'm not gonna lie though at this point in the show I rather liked Yang. By the end of the show I hated him. Later on you'll see just how annoying he is...I really can't stand him. He's one of those characters that really irritates me and rubs me the wrong way even though he's just trying to do his job.

I've seen all of Galactic Heroes and the Gaidens bored me since I already knew that Reinhard, Kircheis, and Yang can't die because they'll show up again. Its a shame the novels the show is based off of will never get translated, but its just such a niche show that I couldn't see it doing well here in the states at all.

I really wish we could get the books translated, hell I wish we could get the main show translated, the only problem with that is that sometimes 'something' is lost in the translation and with a long over arching plot like LotGH I believe alot would get lost or edited to make sence for westeren auidences ( ie dumbed down). The japanese all seem to think us north americans are all rather stupid over here...[sarcasm]maybe the americans are but us canadians can 'get it' if you release stuff over here... [/sarcasm]

Thats the main problem with side stories, if they include any of the main charactors you know everything will work out alright because they have to be in the next episode of the main sceries.

@Chrome Dog, Votmos is a amazing show, I really like the gritty and dirty feel to it. I know chinciro is a invincible main hero most of the time, but damn I loved the 'Red Shoulder brigade' solders they where just so ruthless. I also got the RPG for Votmos and it's got some nice info on the dog class AT's, and info on the background on the universe of VOTMOS....plus the opening song was just amazing. brings a tear to my eye when I hear it.

Its not that anything really gets lost in translation. I watched the entire TV series and never felt like I was out of the loop and I've been into anime long enough to pick up on the small little Japanese things, but to be honest Legend of the Galactic Heroes doesn't really have any of the typical anime Japanese things you'd think an anime has. It may somewhat have a Post WWII attitude because that's how modern day Japan was formed, but definitely nothing was lost in the translation of those subtitles.

The reason they'd never be brought over is simply a lack of a market. Its way too niche and too old for most anime fans to enjoy. If anime companies want to stay in business they pander to the market which is teenagers and young adults. Most young adults won't even sit through LoGH simply because of animation quality. Also space operas aren't the rage at the moment in Japan either.

Some of the side stories are nice because you get to see things like The Battle of El Facil which is where Yang first becomes famous. Also a few other battles and events are referenced during the show and the side stories further explain those events.

Just recently I began watching urusei yatsura again. I loved this series when it was new, and I was lucky enough to pick up the first 2 seasons and part of the 3rd on DVD cheap, as well as 3 of the 5 movies and a few OVAs. The quality of the show is just as good today as when it was first made.

For the youngsters who may or may not have heard of it, it is a brilliant series from rumiko takahashi and it was her first animated series. You may have seen some of her later work, inu yasha, ranma 1/2, etc.

Good to hear. I should probably warn you though, without spoiling it, the ending is a little... abrupt.

But thats a long time away. The series itself is great on the way there!

Through all the annoying plot related errors and other things on the side I can safely say it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

I liked the first Tenchi, until it was abruptly aborted because they thought the characters were getting too powerful. The epicness of that power and the associated fights were what I liked though, and no Techi series since has been nearly as good as that first one was looking to be.

They actually did extend the original OAV further, (not to be confused with all the split off mirror universes.)

Original OAV continuity in order:

Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-ohki OAV
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki Special: The Night before the Carnival
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OAV 2
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OAV 3
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OAV 3 +1 (20th ep of OAV 3)
Tenchi Muyo! GXP (it's actually unclear just where this is, but I'm putting it here.)
Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari (takes place 15 years after GXP and crosses over with Photon. Have not seen this yet to say if it's good or bad)

I've not really got the conviction to watch a full series of anime anymore, so I tend to stick to the films. Sky Blue would be the last one I think, its been a while. Its a generally decent film to watch, the story's a bit cliche, but its artsyness will keep you going if your not into that (the thing took nearly a decade to make). One thing though, don't watch it if your drunk or you'll end up laughing all the way through, especially during the finale (where all the main characters are "dramatically" floating about in mid air).

I just started rewatching Gundam Wing, but this time I'm gonna watch it with Japanese audio and English subtitles. Heero's voice is so different than the flat b/a type voice he had in the dub. He sounds much more like a 15 year old teenager.

That would be nice. I've never been a huge fan of Wing, and I think Heero was a big part of that. Him being a bit more animated (hurr hurr) might help that.

Yeah my biggest gripe with Wing was the characters and just how it throws all of the original UC into a giant mash up without really being coherent. Its taken me a little over 5 years to get around to seeing it again.

I'm still plogging away at Legend of the Galactic Hero, up to episode 32 of 110. Then I got movies and two Gaiden side shows to go through. I'm booked solid for a while.

I really tried to get into ' A certain scientific rail gun' but after 8 or so eps, it just wasn't my cup of tea. I might try again when I am done with LoGH as I am really enjoying it and if you like 'space opera's' with large set spaceship battles and classical music playing in the background I can't recomend this enough.

Just curious did you watch the movie that was actually released before LOGH first? I found it really helpful to see that movie first before actually getting into the main series.

This franchise is awesome. Its a shame they can't expand it anymore since the story it tells wraps itself up rather nicely. The gaidens left a bad taste in my mouth along with the one movie where they change the art style and everyone's voice actor except for the narrator I believe. Heck in the movie Iserlohn fortress doesn't have that cool watery outer layer...it looks like a death star. LOL

Quick jump in, I just finished Eden of the East. Color me impressed, it was worth my time. While some of the characters were a little mary-sue, the plot and world it is set in are top notch.

LoGH. My conquest is the sea of stars, watched it. Enjoyed it. I would love to find scale model kits for the space ships and the little fighters on each side. I know they exist but apparently they cost an arm and a leg.

As I said I have really enjoyed it so far. Charactor development is top notch, the political side of things is interesting to watch play out. I love the ship designs on both sides. Most of the charactors are rather interesting and all have faults... except Kerchies....but hes dead so he doesn't count. Oberstien is one of the most terrifying monsters I have ever encountered in a anime sceries. von Reuenthal and Mittermeyer seem to be the top dog's right now ,but that could be subject to change at any moment.

Great show and if you like 80's style anime's with long over-reach story arks and not much filler shows like bleach and naurto, can't recomend it enough. =o]

Theories
Spoiler:

-The UE are Jovians
-The Majority of UE Mobile Suits are Mobile Dolls.
-The Helmsman and Largan are going to die.

Also caught the first episode of Moretsu Pirates, too soon to make a full opinion on it, but I think I like it.

Thought so as well for the UE.

Spoiler:
Those hooded guys are the Jovians? If so it's almost confirmed at this point. As for Largan very likely, he is pretty much in a bare bones pos, either he'll get something better or pretty much be bruzar/boyage and just be some plot device who's death awakens more of the new type power Flit has.

If the older series are anything to go by I'd say Yurin will unfortunately be brain washed and become an enemy at some point.

I also think Gordek will likely vanish after they fight that fortress or be pardoned for it. Unless he dies during the fight by sort of sacrificing himself bruzar/boyage style.

Did you watched the first or second seasion ( il torenno or something like that) I've watched the first seasion and although the first two episodes where a little meh, when it starts to show the other girls and how there handlers work with them I found it rather interesting.

If you have just watched the first two eps or so maybe giving it another chance might not be so bad. Then again different strokes for different folks.

If you liked trigun ( and honestly who didn't ?) give Cyber City Oedo 808 a try. It's totaly cyberpunk but it's done by the same studio who did Trigun (madhouse). It's got a ton of violence and swearing (especially in the english NA dub). It's not the best story ever told but it's entertaining IMHO. Three cyber criminals are offered a chance out of there 300+ year prison scentences if they will help track down and arrest other criminals. For each A type criminal they catch they get a little knocked off their scentence.

Part one in all it's glory

Have you tried Samurai 7? It wasn't bad imho. Ninja Scroll is just a classic though, good choice in shows. I've only seen the first episode of Basilisk ( I think it was that, these two ninjia's where fighting a honour duel or something then it goes into the history of each clan)

Edit; I know you said sword fighting, but if you want to watch a good fighting kind of show, I cannot recomend Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) enough. The movie was alright, but once you get into the actual TV sceries it gets rather graphic and entertaining.

Just started watching Kami-sama no Memo-cho (Heaven's Notepad) out of curiosity when I found this song, as surprisingly that's generally how I find stuff to watch.

Spoiler:
lung, beat, ship, clock-wise, book, dew, haze,
lark, sphere, shoot, eyes,
spider’s gold

flaps, doll, jet, I miss it,
aube, dragon, φ, twig,
wave, cave, deer, abyss, lips, eclipse

draw me into
“n-o-v-e-m-d-e-c-i-l-l-i-o-n”

acacia
I call it so
suddenly he spells it in my synapse
fahrenheit 66
rotates in my silent life
tv blue

seed, blooms, toy
frisk, oval, sigh
egg, liquid, cypress
diagram, aquarius
fern, splash, bergamot
five senses, synec-doche
clear, orchid, acid, cat
contrail, tea, glacier
murmured

acacia
I call it so
suddenly he spells it in my synapse
fahrenheit 66
rotates in my silent life
crimson sky

dune, sprint, may, fish
cruise, heart, rain, complex
falcon, vibes, wind, geometry

shelter, swish, unite
flakes, mirror, edge, toe
fear, molecule, drifter
eve, sign,
teddy

Basically it's a good detective series, sort of if Death Note had followed L's prior cases. The song itself appeared in the first episode when she confronts someone, other than that her technique is pretty much the same as L. Up to the third episode and hope it stays with the more "realistic" approach it has to these cases.

Just watched Ghost in The Shell, damn that's a good movie. I started to watch the series as well on netflix. I want to get back to watching Cowboy Bebob and Samurai Champloo. Both those series make a lot of anime just unwatchable by comparison.

Legend of the Galactic Hero's, it's a little more space opera then 'hard sci-fi' but if you like watching large set piece space ship battle ( like 150,000-200,000 ships per side) set to classical music. This is the show for you. Lots of political intrige and poloticing.

Cowboy Bepop is rather amazing also. Planetees is rather good also, well the manga is, it's about astronoughts who clean up 'space junk' in near earth orbit.

The earlier Gundams ( 0079,0083 ,Zeta, Chars Counter Attack) are rather good IMHO but not really 'Hard Sci-fi'. I have found that Victory Gundam is damn amazing, if you want to see killem all Tomino at his best check out Victory or Space Runaway IDEON. IDEON is brutal, especially to little kids.

I rather enjoyed Irresponsible Captain Tylor when I watched it, although it's a lot more space opera too, and if you're going so far as to want hard sci-fi a lot of the characters are likely to annoy the hell out of you.

If you haven't seen it yet ghosts in the shell is pretty hard sci-fi. It deals a lot with what makes us individuals and little bit with singularity.

Considering how old it is, I would hope that, like Akira, everyone has seen it once by now...

No it is not. It's never been dubbed into english. But the fansubs are rather well done. I usually hate fan subs but I am impressed with Central Anime's fansub.

Here is the first opening for it, it's really easy to find on youtube which is a bonus. No hunting 'other places' for it.

If you want to get into it, I suggest reading up on the episode list on wiki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_galactic_heroes I started with the OVA movie, LoGH 'My conquest is the sea of stars'. I am up to episode 40 or so and wow is all I can say, I wish I knew about this show earlier. Do be careful though there are spoilers in the Wiki, so I wouldn't be reading to much on the charactors unless you don't mind spoilers.

Hard Sci-Fi and Space Opera are not mutually exclusive, so feel free to suggest space operas as long as they have strong sci-fi elements.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock (Its from like '79, so expect QUALITY animation)
Captain Herlock: Outside Legend, Endless Oddessy (Its from the 2000s, so much better animation)

I love Leiji Matsumoto's works, but the Captain Harlock stuff is easy to jump into. OLEO is probably better of a starting point for someone not firmilar with his works, and it was released in the states (by the now dead Geneon). Galaxy Express 999 and Galaxy Railways are also good.

You my good sir have excellent tast in shows. I whole heartly recomend both Space Pirate Captin Harlock,, and the Galaxy Express shows.

Also if you have never seen Space Battleship Yamoto (aka Starblazers in North America) I would also recomend this. This is what I cut my teeth on when I was a kid first watching anime. They had Starblazers on BCTV at 6:30am, and I would wake up at 6:20am just so I could eat breakfast and watch Starblazers.

I remember when we first got the 'Space (the imagionation station)' channel, it played about 8 different animes on the weekends, Galaxy Express was one of them. They also showed Ninjia Scroll, Akira, The Fist of the North Star movie, Ghost in the Shell (the movie),Patlabour (the movie) naussicca and the valley of the wind, and I think the first appleseed movie ( the animeone not the cgi one).

Damn those where good times. They also showed Robotech for a while but pulled it due to bad raitings, as it was on here at 4am pacific time and 7am Easteren time what the hell did they expect?!!

Just finished Kamisama no Memochou. I'd recommend it to anyone that liked NHK or Death Note (Another Note), as those are the closest I can compare it to. It's only 12 episodes long though unless they make a new season.

Only PV I can find is boring and has no speech in it.

So the opening will have to do.

I think the first ever anime I saw, and I think still one of the best ever. There is a $100 model of the robot I saw, and am still trying to justify buying it

Anyone know a manga similar to Ghost in the Shell they could recommend? I've watched some of Standalone complex, but about half the episode seems to be the ending credits, and the music is so bloody terrible it's actually put me off watching the show!

I finished watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

If you haven't seen it,do make your business to watch it.

It's so well written and the dialogue is so moving, I actually got teary eyed during it.

The story is that mankind lives underground while the Beastmen and their giant robots rule the surface.
Two guys Simon and KAMINA, (Who always introduces himself with a long winded speech) both escape to the surface after they find a small robot and meet Yoko,a half naked freedom fighter from the surface.
Their victories with their small robot then lead to bigger victories untill they become a united rebel force.

Simon is the quite one, modest even though he's a real hero at heart. Kamina is loud, proud and inspiring, always giving speeches on the strenght of mankind and courage that drives mankind onwards. But the two together is the real gem,Kamina is the older brother figue to Simon, and they never let each other give up.

There is a few bad parts but nothing to put you off the show, like I said Yoko is the token fan service half naked girl, she is a strong character and you do take her seriously, but some people might it off putting.

Also alot of the side character don't really get much of an introduction, especially later when they get a big team overnight,we're expected to know these characters when they don't even get names. A shame because they have interesting personalities.

As said earlier, you MUST watch Gurren Lagann. My brother described it as having nearly every anime cliche somewhere in the series, and yet being made of pure condensed Awesome, which I think is a very apt description. I mean, how often do you get to see someone Punch a hole thru Time and Space!? Watch it! Watch it NOW!!

Just Who The Hell Do You Think I Am?!

Heeeyyy, I've got that game, although I've only really played the tutorial so far. I bought it off of ebay though and when I got the package found out that ACE:R is actually this:

Although I had absolutely no clue what it was. It took my stepdad to figure it out. "That's a wok ring." "A WHAT‽" "A wok ring." "Oh, sorry, I misheard you."

Anime, yeeeah. I watched some of Manyuu Hikenchou. The premise is: boob ninjas. It proceeds about how you'd expect.

Gurren Lagann might be just about my favorite anime. I concur that it must be seen.
