Thing is, "Anime" isn't really a descriptor of "Shows from Japan" at this point- it's more of a Genre in and of itself, right up there with "Cyberpunk" or "High Fantasy". It's a collection of tropes and plots and characters common across a portion of animated media- Katana-wielding protagonists, scantily clad females, themes of determination conquering all and the value of friendship, and a dichotomy between incredible fast-paced action sequences and very slow, barely animated dialogue.
If you want to see a cartoon that's 'pure' Anime genre, look at something by Trigger- either Kill la Kill or Gurren Lagann.
But a lot of Japanese animation has little hints of Anime in it- Ghost in the Shell is almost pure Cyberpunk and Political thriller, but there's the scantily clad females all over. Naruto is a sort of 'Middle Fantasy', but it has a lot of Power of Friendship and Determination themes in it. Blood+ is a pretty deep Psychological Thriller, but the main character is an attractive girl who fights with a katana. And Sword Art Online explores themes of what it means to be Human and the nature of Reality, but sneaks in some Fanservice here and there, with a main character who, again, primarily uses swords (even though they're straight swords this time).
What you're saying is "Anime" here is just typical Shonen. "Anime" is literally just the Japanese word for animation. Framing "Anime" as something that is distinct from Japanese animation and even a precludes a lot of it is just plain silly. Given your definition things like the Honey & Clover adaptation (great series by the way!), aren't anime.
While they're certainly the most popular and really quite a bit of fun, anime aimed at 14-year old boys is hardly all that's out there.
Fair points- however, you have to remember the sorts of translation issues America seems to have with Japanese culture- for example, "Mecha" is just the Japanese word for "Mechanical stuff" yet we consistently use it to refer to a very specific genre of giant-robot shows, when we should more properly class them as their respective "Super Robot" and "Real Robot" genres.
And look at animation from other countries. Do we call things like Code Lyoko or the stuff from Moonscoop "Animation" specifically and consistently, or do we lump it under "Cartoons"? Do we call Winx Club "Animazione"? To be perfectly honest, at this point, I'm more comfortable with the portmanteu "Japanimation" as a word for "Cartoons from Japan" rather than lumping everything under Anime.
And though Shonen is the place where a lot of these tropes are most visible, that's not to say that Shonen is where they originated. Blood+ isn't really Shonen, neither is GiTS. And back when most of these ideas and tropes were codified in the Japanese animation industry, Shonen and Seinen and all those weren't really distinct sub-genres yet. Things like the original Astro Boy and Speed Racer have a lot of Anime trappings while being more generic Sci-Fi shows- sure, they have a lot of male-focus in them, but that's more a result of the times than a targetted attempt to appeal to young men.

This seems roughly like saying that we shouldn't consider Banished, Harvest Moon, Sim City or Guitar Hero video games because video games are clearly about running/jumping/fighting/shooting and just general violent conflict. It'd be better to classify these as some kind of Objective-Based Interactive Media.
Besides in the current context "Anime" as "animated shows & movies from japan" is totally functional, I've certainly never seen the further distinctions confused by anyone but those who basically have no interest in the first place. The distinction you're trying to make here just muddles the conversations with veterans, and would only serve to make things less accessible for newbies exploring in this thread.
What in the world is accomplished by making Gurren Lagann as the most-anime-thing-of-all-things at putting everything else on some kind of sliding spectrum away from that point, with some cutoff for being "Anime" somewhere before GitS? How does it improve over the usual way of doing things?
Should/does "Anime" simply mean "Animated media originating in Japan"? Should/does it mean "Animated media in the style popularized in Japan"? Is it a term describing themes and tropes commonly found in Animated media from Japan?
Here's something that muddies the waters between the first two, at the least- IGPX. It's phenominally "Anime". But it's fully American in origin, being an Adult Swim original production. But aside from the original language and the people who thought it up, it's Anime. Similarly with RWBY, actually. Same design philosophy, same storylines, same sort of action sequences...
I'm of the opinion that "Anime" isn't so much a descriptor of where a piece of Animated Media originates, as much as "a category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter."- a.k.a., Genre. It's a Genre that has unequivocally originated in Japan, and is still dominated by media coming from there, but the fact that you can have live action Anime (the adaptation of Cromartie High, Sailor Moon, or Casshern) and still have it be unmittigatedly Anime suggests to me that you can't constrain the definition to "Animation created in Japan".

That isn't how the word is used though.
You seem to be looking for a word to describe a trait or style common to a lot anime that is also shared with some other media. It's like we didn't have a word for yellow and you're looking for such a word, but since we don't have one you're claiming that Apples & Pears aren't fruit but sunflowers are fruit because Apples & Pears don't share the trait (yellowness) of the most common fruit (the banana), and that things that clearly aren't fruit are simply because they do share that trait (yellowness).
"Anime" just isn't used to describe a genre in the way you're trying to make it here. If I ask just about anyone who is vaguely familiar with anime if, the Space Brothers TV series is an anime they'll say "Yes". You'll find it listed and discussed on websites dedicated to anime. The people who worked on creating it originally and on doing the translation would agree it was. Yet it fails just about every metric you set for something being "Anime". On the sliding scale of "Gurren Lagen" to "Other Stuff" it certainly falls closer to other stuff than Ghost in the Shell and the like. I could list many other similar cases as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime wrote:Anime (Japanese: アニメ?, [anime] ( listen); English Listeni/ˈænɨmeɪ/) are Japanese animated productions usually featuring hand-drawn or computer animation.
To be fair, yes, I am looking for a term to describe that genre that, let's say, is common to Anime. I think you've hit the nail on the head there, actually. But then, at the same time, I wonder why we have a word specifically for the animation from a single country- at least, when we don't have similar words for animation from other specific countries. Is everything animated in America a "Cartoon"? Would something animated in Taiwan or Korea be an "Anime"? Is Torkaizer, or IGPX, Anime, despite not being from Japan?
it's like how Mergansers look like ducks, walk like ducks, quack like ducks, but aren't ducks.
Also, just a fun little thing about bananas- they're Berries! As are tomatoes and pineapples. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are [i]not[/i/] berries.

A somewhat more permissive usage of the term might include things that are broadly "Anime-styled" in the way you've picked them out. Particularly in casual usage or settings not particularly centered on the specifics of the Japanese industry. However this is very different from the restrictive approach you were taking earlier that defined anime as jiggly-tits, swords and hot-blooded young men. That definition just can't hold up to even the most basic pass at how the term is commonly used.
Bringing stuff under the umbrella when it is very clearly seeking to emulate some parts of some common types of japanese products might be fair to a limited extent. Especially since there really isn't a great term for them. However flexing the definition at the edges like that really can't mean things like Nodame Cantabile or Tatami Galaxy are edged out. If you do push things like that out, again you're defining the word in a way that doesn't even meet most basic usages of the term.
In the end I probably wouldn't put my nose up to someone calling something "American-Anime" or "American-Shonen" or the like, or even just leaving out the "American-" and putting it in the anime genre it is most emulating. That could certainly rattle more folks more purist than me though.
Also, just a fun little thing about bananas- they're Berries! As are tomatoes and pineapples. Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are [i]not[/i/] berries.
Berries are fruit. It's a Squares and Rectangles thing.
I never noticed that, but it's been awhile since I've seen either show.
I still can't get over Blum as Orochimaru, I normally recognize his voice but he went out of his way for that one. Then again he uses something similar for Leeron from Guren Lagann...
Some of his recent work was in the Boxtrolls, he was voicing the trolls alongside my 2nd favorite Voice actor, Dee Bradley Baker.
I'm still amazed at some of the things he's been in. I played Starwars Battlefront II for YEARS without realizing he was in there somewhere. I only learned he was recently via the Wookipedia article on the game.
Speaking of Blum.... I might just go give Cowboy Bebop a go.... hmmmmm...
Oh yeah watch it, it's good. There's a movie too, can watch it pretty much anytime after they pick up Ed and Valentine without it being out of place. Definitely happens during the run of the show, just another longer adventure.
I hear his voice (or really similar) alot, I think he may have been one of the very temporary characters in one of the FEAR games lol.
Started watching Terra Formars again. it actually got a lot better after the whole black bar episode.
I'll be honest though, the main appeal of this series is me being a big nature buff. All the powers in it are based on living organisms on earth which makes the whole thing very appealing.
I like Terraformers overall, but the fights all essentially break down into This side is clearly a dominant force of nature evolved to be the best, but wait! The other side is actually one step better suddenly! The underdog in any given fight is almost always the winner via sudden reversal. But yes, it is much better without the stupidly obstructive censer bars.
Just watched Trigun, High School DxD (It Sucked, it was Ecchi), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzamyi (Fantastic), Black Lagoon (All of it, second season eh, first great, but the OVA's wow) and Just started watching Canaan (Holy Mother of God, just watch the first episode and you will see why).
Damn this is what happens at the least bit of my school year.
I might give jormungand a shot. I heard the main character (the white haired woman) is really terrible as a person. I was aware of the show and interested but never really watched it.
I also recommend monster even though i've seen only about half of it.
Parasyte so far with 10 episodes shown is really good. Man this show is crazy but also really awesome. The precision and knowledge of parasites that have been able to learn enough is crazy. In case you haven't seen the show the parasites are kind of like 'The Thing' though not quite as powerful. It's a great show and deals with some very f**k'ed up stuff.
Yeah all the characters interesting and the plot is kind of awesome.
And it is mostly a girl cast. Which is kind of interesting.
This is one of the few animes where there is actually very few fan service. IT actually makes sense O.O
Otherwise the characters are kind of awesome.
Apparently the back-story is from the japan only visual novel 428: Fūsa Sareta Shibuya de. As far as I can tell, the game is Maria's trauma causer.
I had a feeling about that. I haven't heard of it. Till now. But I don't think we need to go into details about it.
Though the Lesbian relationship between Maria and Canaan is just a fan tease by the looks of it :/ (damn you anime! it would of been awesome)
It's something I have not been able to figure out even after finishing the show (multiple times).
Spoiler:
Maria and Canaan are obviously very close, and neither of them seem to have any relationships other than that. Even if they don't love each-other like parteners, they love echother like sisters. Probebly one of the best relationships I've ever seen in a anime.

They are quite touchy then XD
I can see that Canaan is the younger one while Maria seems to be older.
The two are quite much like that. But I agree it is a fantastic relationship.
(just finished it)
Wow that was extremely sad. :(
Okay that was probably one of the best animes i've watched in years.
It never quite allows you to be sure does it.
My personal theory is
Spoiler:
that Canaan did not stay with Maria to protect her. Canaan is special and dangerous, and is always going to be of interest of dangerous people. Anyone of whom might use Maria to get at Canaan, just as they did during the anime.
Yeah, I got rather attached to the characters, and I cried when I finished it.
And I love Maria and Canaan (and the ever put upon Minoru Minorikawa), but my favorite character has to be the fething taxi driver. Just that fething taxi driver. It's impossible not to love him.
If any anime deserves more recognition it is this one. It ends nicely, well written, but I will always wish for more.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Maria and Canaan are an intersting pair, Canaan seems to have never really had childhood, always the maturity of an adult, Maria is forever a child, innocent, loving (and loveable), excitable and trusting.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I was actually just looking at the TV tropes chatcter page and found a little nugget in Truma-induced amnesia
Spoiler:
" In the Shibuya game, she was forcibly infected with the UA virus and, as a side effect of the experience, she can't fully remember what went on back then... like when she met Alphard."

I am pretty sure Canaan Does love Maria but Canaan doesn't really know how to express. To me it screamed these two are adorable together. I mean I could see them being sisters. But maybe its because I like those relationships on Television.
The Main cast was great,
The English Dub was probably one of the best I've heard in years.
The only bad thing about the show is there isn't another season :/
Canaan and Maria were a great duo. And I agree it was probably one of the best relationships in Anime. As this literally bleeds a strong relationship and one that I would of liked to see explored more.
I mean I didn't cry at all, but I got teary eyed about it.
It was a great ending for a great show. Though at least half the cast do not get a good ending at all.
Spoiler:
I.E Hirzao the woman who can't speak, and the former CIA guy died together, but she was having sex with his dead corpse. Which was just creepy as all hell
And yeah I didn't heart about it till I saw it on a list. And just clicked on it and started to watch it.
Damn it was probably better than Full Metal Alchemist. And that is saying something.
This felt like Ghost In a Shell, but with human beings.
Canaan felt extremely real, so did maria, and the entire cast. The only who didn't was Lin Quang who for a lack of a better term
Spoiler:
Was fan service, but damn the way she went out was enough for me to take my word back, what a horrible way to die. Especially by the hands of the man that loved her. :/ Feth Me this anime went into dark territory in the end.
This is probably one of the best action animes I've seen in a while. Apart from the Disappearance of Hirzuahi Suzarmi (or how ever you spell it).
Spoiler:
Canaan is probably one of my favorite protagonists in Anime ever because she is conflicted and she grows. Her character arc is interesting and she grows up by the end of the show. Going from a cold killer to one who respects people. She is more confident and more inspiring. And damn she looks great in a ponytail.
I mean before she was just heartless but now. She is quite normal. She grew up. But the part that got me was that she let go of Maria, but always kept her in her heart.
I am extremely sad I won't see another Season of this show. It just echoes to me the female version of cowboy Bebop.
I loved it. It was probably one of my favorites. And one I really want to own on DVD, because it is probably one of the few that I would like to see more of. Sort of like Black Lagoon, but the main character is actually highly likable and highly intelligent and you understand the things she goes through.
I might be the only one here that wasn't interested in Canaan. We watched 1 episode at an anime club I was in to see if anyone was interested and not many were.
Ledabot wrote: I might be the only one here that wasn't interested in Canaan. We watched 1 episode at an anime club I was in to see if anyone was interested and not many were.
Well matters which episode. Its not the next coming of christ, but I liked it. The first episode is probably where you have to start it. It is a constant plot line. Not the next bad guy after another it is basically linear plot line. So If you just randomly pick out an episode odds are you aren't going to like it XD
But it was a good anime. It was a nice surprise. I came in with little expectations.
Re-watching Nanoha StrikerS, and attempting to get a friend into Nanoha in general, starting with the first eps of the first season.
I forgot how much of a Magical Girl show it started out as. And the animation quality is all over the place- going from cutouts moving around on a background screen to super-fluid frame-by-frame stuff, all in a couple episodes. I wonder if there were different animation houses involved in the early days?

Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha- one of the best Gundam series that has no robots in it.
AKA, the manliest Magical Girl anime out there. Or at least, least embarrassing to watch.
There's three (four?) series- the original MSLR, the second season/series, which was called A's (pronounced "Ace"), and a third season/series called StrikerS (why is the last letter also capitalized? I have no idea.)
Features lasers, lightning scythes, magic chains, transformation sequences, intense midair battles, drill-rocket-hammers, and more Instant-Runes than you can shake a (magic)stick at.

Interesting!
I just decided to buy Steins: Gate and Canaan. the only anime I will buy until I get a more steady income.
Steins;Gate is what brought me back to the wonderful world of anime. Devoured the entire show in 2 nights I think.
Welp, I have resumed watching Another. It scares the gak outta me.
First 2 episodes, the ones I watched before are all quiet but full of mystery. Nothing happens.
Suddenly, a most gruesome death that makes me flinch.
Next episode I learn about the curse.
And now I am always in this weird tense state when I watch it, always wondering who's gonna die and how and why. If I see something remotely lethal in the background I'm staring at it thinking if this is gonna be it. feth, I'm not good with horror movies, this anime is reminding me of one.

I finished it in one day XD
I was waiting for my computer to render everything.
Yeah its not typical. Its based on several theories of time travel.
Anvildude wrote: I thought that Steins Gate was a video game. Dang. Definitely going to watch it if it's an actual anime, then. I love properly done time travel stuff.
It is both a video game and an anime. But the Anime was rewritten by the original creator of Steins;Gate.
Its definately a watch.
Be warned it is very mature. The main female character you will learn to hate and love her pervertedness.

How in hell can anyone hate her pervertedness?
Hell, she even does a "Yo dawg, we heard you like X ... " meme! I was stunned just like the rest of the cast and then laughing my ass off.

I remember her saying quite a few things. I didn't expect.
They did a yolo joke even. I mean damn. I was expecting half of the jokes to be funny.
She is one of the few redheads in anime that I know of that is extremely intelligent and extremely pervy.
I love her as a character. I wish we had more them.
Ah so stoked for the preview for the next episode of Akame Ga Kill (EP 24)
Spoiler:
Akame vs Esdeath! Although I personally liked Akame's sister as a character much more
I'm a little behind on the other currently airing series. I managed to squeeze in a marathon of Angel Beats with my roommates in between finals though...Best worst decision of my life
Still need to watch this Steins Gate everyone talks about.
I always wanted to watch it too.
Anybody else here see a bit of seitokai no ichizon? I enjoyed what i saw of that anime. First season all the girls hate him and in the 2nd they love him. The anime is meant to make fun of harems but sorta is one. It's kind of weird one of the girls fantasizes him in her yaoi and another is manipulative and throws out ideas of bondage on him. Chizuru is one of my favorites even if i don't like her manipulative side. She just throws out all the right sexiness. This always feels awkward though considering they're still in freaking high school. Jeez anime stop trying to turn me into a semi-pedo. It's anime though and ages are weird in anime (grown adults that are children and children that are adults) esp. with girl maturity and bust so i think it's not totally my fault.

If it makes you feel any better all the characters in Stein's Gate with the exception of two are over 18.
And don't worry that happens in most Harem Animes, all the girls are younger than the main protagonist.
I mean its not like its unusual to fall in love with the characters.
High school animes do that too. Try to watch the Disappearance of Haurhi Suzayama and not love one of the most adorable characters. (Yet she's only 16?!?!?)
Also Sailor moon all the girls are in 15 or 14 years old. Yet they look like college girls.

SHHHHH
Let him enjoy it. I find it some of the best episodes in Anime Period. Because damn. I loved that show, and the OVA is definitely worth the watch. Its funny and it ties everything up in a nice bow. Even better than the last episode of the show. SOMEHOW They made it better.
Studio Ghibli have just released a boxed set of BD discs of all the films directed by Hayao Miyazaki from Castle of Cagliostro to The Wind Rises.
Currently priced very high, especially for people like myself who already own most of them on DVD, but if you do not own many of them it would be a very good investment.
They are some of the best animation films ever made.

This.
I usually cry when watching anime (I get emotionally attached when it's an anime with a plot making you care for the characters, sue me!) but SG "broke" me.
Spoiler:
When they are reading the letter and she wrote, what, 10 or more times "I'm sorry" because she lost her memory and failed her mission, I was already feeling miserable. AND THEN it's mentioned she suicided after that. That hit me like a truck
AND THEN, when it's said the only way to make stuff go back to normal and save Mayuri is by, well, making sure nothing changes... aka, Kurisu has to die. DAMN, did I cry.

I watch far too many shows where my favorite character dies by the end for me to invest in them any longer. I am waiting to see how they figure out how to kill someone in Gundam Build Fighters Try... cmon....

Also whats everyones opinion on the english dub of Steins;Gate?
I thought it was really good. Even though I watched both first episodes in both english and japanese.
I didn't like the voice actors for japanese. They felt like preteens to me. While the english one felt like adults.
Maybe its a choice thing, but I really liked the voice actors for the English one.
I usually watch subs. But this time. Screw it I hated the sub one for some odd reason. Probably because the voice actors put in emotion into everyone.
"you'd think I had a sign on my back that said 'insert crazy here'"

has anyone else noticed that when you paint eldar and watch anime t the same time you tend to be more experimental?

Yes... that's when it all starts...
I haven't managed to watch more of it. Damn it, I really suck when it comes to horror movies It just comes outta nowhere, I was like "WTF?! SERIOUSLY, WTF?!"
Well Heres the thing, if you are waiting to see the thing, you are going to be disappointed. just watch the show. Don't wait for it to happen. Or else you are going to be extremely disappointed.
I always found the ending of Cowboy Bebop to the most manliest part of any anime, because it is almost impossible not to give a gak.
manlier then punching a tank, and winning?
Getting shot and still fighting strong, face an entire crime syndicate by yourself wins in my book more than punching a tank. And having enough energy to say the word "bang!" before passing out to your injuries.
Asherian Command wrote:I always found the ending of Cowboy Bebop to the most manliest part of any anime, because it is almost impossible not to give a gak.
I didn't give a gak. Bebop is overrated drivel *jumps for cover*
Yeah a central plot that amounted to all of 4 episodes of a 26 episode series So central
Samuri Champloo was made by the same people, in the same style, with the same basic structure, and managed to be no where near as trivial as Bebop. Watch Bebop is like waiting 30 minutes for something remotely interesting to happen, and praying there's at least one fight scene synced to some nice blues/jazz to make up just a little bit for your time being wasted
Big O was better, and Big O was literally written to waste the viewers time with pontificating that seems like it means something but actually doesn't mean anything

Better than most animes. Thats for bloody sure. And it wasn't world tearing apart big and didn't have power creep.
I actually didn't Enjoy Samuri Champloo for some reason.
But I can see its merits.
I like a ton of anime, but I also hate a lot of it as well. *COUGH* SCHOOL DAYS *COUGH* *COUGH* *STARTS WHEEZING*
If you have ever seen school days. I am sorry. For anyone else. Don't fething watch it!
Your brain will melt. It is horrible and every human being on that show are.... Evil sons of a ^@%$#@%@
How bad can it really be?
One of my favourite movies is Caligula...
I once saw a hentai version of Death Note, but it was wasn't a good porn parody, they only had the concept of the book (it didn't even look the same, there was no parodies of characters or anything...just rape, I would have made it a very silly romp, something more like a 90s hentai, say Venus 5)...

You have no idea how bad School Days is. It is known as the worst anime of all time.
Spoiler:
So the main character a boy wants to go out with this girl, he gets help from her friend. He goes out on a date with this girl (Not the friend), and after the date her friend asks him how did he like it, and he said it was too much work and felt too hard. So instead of breaking up with his new girlfriend he asks her friend to go out with him instead, and then boom they have sex immedately. No it is not a hentai, but it sure does feel like it. It is then a downward spiral as his girlfriend starts hearing about all these things, and is driven insane by it. (Because she actually does love him). He starts banging all the girls in the school, and then it gets even better, the girl friend walks in kills him, and cuts off his head. And stuffs it into her pursue. She then kills her friend while SHE IS PREGENANT WITH THE GUYS CHILD, it is bad because of dialogue, story, characters, no one is likable, the dialogue is gak! THERE IS NO REASON TO WATCH THIS ANIME! I don't care if I ruin it because it is one of the worst animes I HAVE EVER SEEN!
What Big O had was epicness;
I like Code geass better XD
done, and no tear/s. altough that ending was annoying. also, on the topic of manlyness:
How is it annoying? It wraps it up quite nicely in my opinion. But I didn't cry. Its really hard to make me feel any emotion. The only thing that has ever made me cry successfully was a game about an old man and his life.
Well lets face it Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood had some of the best scenes in history. I.E. Mustang vs Lust is probably the coolest bit in an anime ever.
See that looks interesting. This is just stupid teenagers in a high school. It is not the violence. It is the entire premise of the show that is wrong. I can deal with violence.
LordofHats wrote: We should probably give a shout out to Abridge Alucard;

Alucard got me a date...I'm totally serious...
and for the school days argument... still think gang rape and child murder is worse
or how bout Genocyber where it's child murder/abuse and child molestation
(both of course have violence)
seriously the 2000's got nothing on 90s anime when it comes to dark tones.
Shame on you (though the series gets so draggy between Episodes 4 and 10). And Alucard is the first person to point out there's no such thing as immortality Just effective unkillability
LordofHats wrote: Shame on you (though the series gets so draggy between Episodes 4 and 10).
No its more of it had no plot line. No plot to follow it was basically the battle of london and thats about it. I lost interest pretty quickly as the main character was basically unkillable.
Alucard was not interesting to me.
He was a bland immortal character. Oh look a badass. Okay does he have any character? No. Then no he's not a good character or a badass.
That joke is way funnier if you were in with the fandom when the Manga was coming out and got to see all the naysays gak themselves 2 years later when Girlucard appeared /Hipstering
No its more of it had no plot line. No plot to follow it was basically the battle of london and thats about it. I lost interest pretty quickly as the main character was basically unkillable.
You utterly missed the point of the story then (and didn't see the ending )
Spoiler:
The point of Hellsing, at least as it relates to being a character piece about Alucard himself, is that Alucard desperately wants to die a worthy death, but has been unable to find any man able to kill him. Van Hellsing came the closest, but rather than kill him Hellsing enslaved Alucard, a fate he accepts to the extent that he's still searching for a means to his own demise. He can be killed, as his regeneration is simply supercharged by the sheer number of lives he's consumed. Anderson near the end comes close to doing him in.
Alucard turned out in the end to be much deeper and harder to understand than most fans expected when the series began.
As a larger narrative, Hellsing is about monsters and the men (or children) who become monsters.
And for a cluster feth, spoilers in a spoiler!
At the end of Hellsing, the Major reveals his entire plot all along was simply devised to death Alucard, a goal he seemingly achieves via Schrodinger (the kat kid). Shrodinger's power is reality negation, but for it to work he has to be able to perceive himself in space time. By killing himself and being absorbed into Alucard, he ceases to exist, and by extension Alucard ceases to exist.
At least until 40 years later when Alucard shows back up apparently having purged himself of every soul except Shrodinger's, and having Shrodinger's powers, which can be taken has him getting more brokenly OP or as a power down grade based on how you see things XD

So they basically took the plot of the Immortal O.o
Where a Man turned Demon wants to die but he can't unless he proves himself and dies in glorious battle?
Where a Man turned Demon wants to die but he can't unless he proves himself and dies in glorious battle?
The series leaves a great deal of ambiguity (it is literally, littered in so many allusions, analogies, and references, that we could have an entire thread about listing them and pointing them out, and we'd probably never find them all. Seriously). But Alucard seemingly has embraced being a monster, even though he loathes what he's become. Hence the series' tag line "The Bird of Hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame." His desire to die at the hands of a 'man' seemingly steams from this. He's a monster, and monsters are killed by men.

Very Japanese way of living really.
Reminds me of the Immortal Sword manga. Where a man must kill a thousand men.
Or when in full metal alchemist Honheim main wish is to die.
Japan really likes to play with that idea. The West really doesn't have too many stories about immortality say for a few.
Blade of the Immortal is EXACTLY like Hellsing. Both are interesting, but I lean towards blade of the immortal because one is still human and is trying to make up for his sins.

And School Days.
School Days I think it's the most real of them all, really. I suppose that's what would happen if someone attempted an "Harem" in RL.
What get beheaded and your pregenant women you have been sleeping with is stabbed and killed? Even though the dialgoue is horrible and the animation was the only good thing about it?
I am pretty sure if it was RL it would of been "Hey it isn't working out. Wanna break up?" "Okay...." Goes off and porks the other girl he liked.
That is literally all that should of happened. Not this BS with sleeping with half the high school and the main girl hearing about it, and being told this. TO HER FACE. Yeah she went insane because of it. It is not brillant it is cliched and stupid.

Sorry I've heard that in argument in favor of School of Days. some people like it a lot.
I actually feel ill at how many people died within the last 2 or 3 episodes. Holy were some of them brutal. Never expected Reiko to be the extra though, was an interesting twist to it all.
steins;gate has crawled up into my top 5 anime list easily.
that being,
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood,
spice and wolf,
steins;gate,
sword art online,
and the devil is a part timer.
wow, I think that's the most random list of anime ever. nothing connects any of them.
so, ay suggestions for what to watch next?

Spice and Wolf is a great story driven show. And one of the best female characters in anime.
FMAB is awesome. Sword Art Online To each their own Devil is a part timer no duh. Its stupid but it is funny.
Yeah The ending surprised me, I mean the whole show was a freaking surprise.
And by the way there is a movie, but I am waiting for the dub, because I can't stand the japanese voice actors for everyone. I just can't.
I've been trying to figure out why I like steins;gate, and I've managed to isolate it to three tings.
1. hot redhead. 2. insanity is kind of my thing.
3. it out-scienced me. I pride myself on my scientific knowledge, and not to toot my own horn but I significanty more knowledgable in said subject than many of my peers, and steins;gate managed to confuse the hell out of me!
I haven't finished it yet (episode 14 I think) but the science it quite fun. I generally know what they are talking about (I am legitimately interested in this sort of stuff, especially things like the string theory, and the theory that there are an infinite number of universes, each different (a bit like the world lines in this, other than the fact that they already exist). It's one of the best time travel theories I have seen in fiction in a long time.

1.agreed. Hot ReadHead indeed.
I mean pervy, cute, intelligent, Scientist, LEGAL! And a hot redhead. SOLD!
2. Agreed. Insanity is fantastic,
3. Out-scienced agreed.
It went to my favorite animes.
Steins;Gate, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Code Geass, Gundam Wing/Seed, Haruyhi Suzamyia, and of course Ghost in a Shell.
I love all the theories in time travel. It is awesome. John Titor and all those theories have always made me interested. But it explained so well, that I understood it. I just had to pause it once in a while.
Though personally I love redheads so when I see a redhead in it I usually watch it.
Hence why I unfortunately watched High School DXD...... Every Episode hoping to god there was more of a plot.
Also Why I watched High School of The Dead. And I Hated it but Loved it. Every panty shot and boob shot made me hate it, but Apart from the guns, thats about it.
I really liked a lot of animes.

feras and rucka still having memories from a different timeline.
I have a love-hate relationship with anime. I really dislike most anime, but those few that I do like I really like.
Maybe it was because
Spoiler:
Rucka maybe having the reading steiner ability. And Feras going through tramatic experiences.
I mean how many times have you had a dream about yourself dying and waken up afterwards like it was too real. Maybe a world line was killed or went through a tramatic experience it is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE
But according to John Titor who has been so far 80% wrong on his predications.
Time Travel being extremely interesting, But I can see why it would turn some people off. The one part that made me sad was when Ruka choose to go back to being a boy. I mean at first I thought Ruka was a girl. That might be the creator making fun of anime in general where some males look like females in some anime.
Yeah I hate a lot of anime, there are some really crappy anime out there.
Can anyone remember the anime about anime production studio making anime show.
Wait its called Shirobako. I actually enjoyed it because think real life but in anime form, but characters are making an anime.

That's... far too generic. I think we could say a gakload of them, but I'll recommend the two 2nd season animes that are being released now:
- Log Horizon
- Psycho Pass
@Chromedog - I hope you love Psycho Pass. It's phenomenal, the whole plot, world, setting, it was phenomenal.
@Asherian Command - You seem to have much anger for fan-service. Interesting.

@Chromedog - I hope you love Psycho Pass. It's phenomenal, the whole plot, world, setting, it was phenomenal.
@Asherian Command - You seem to have much anger for fan-service. Interesting.
I’ve been enjoying Psycho Pass myself. It’s good sci-fi in the classic sense. It postulates a future that makes up think about our own. And it holds together well. Not done watching it yet, so it might go south, but the first dozen episodes were solid.
@ shroudedlord- I'd say Sword Art Online instead of Log Horizon- but that's pretty much personal preference. It's kinda funny, because the forums have been pretty heavily divided between the two VRMMO animes.
There's the staples, pretty much anything in the last 50 pages or so should tell you those. I enjoyed Nobunagun myself- short, sweet, and clearly the first work from a fledgeling studio, but they've got some pretty clear talent there.
Well Log Horizon isn't exactly VRMMO, just plain MMO. I'm personally really enjoying Log Horizon. I never could get in to SAO. Then agin, I didn't really like attack on titan, so maybe I'm just weird.
I watch both SAO and Log Horizon, SAO was better for the first half of season 1, every episode after that first arc has been pretty terrible by comparions while Log Horizon has been pretty consistently awesome.
To shrouded:
Wolf's Rain is a very freaky(fethed up omg my heart) scifi setting. Though it's not very new.
I prefer Scifi over fantasy so I'd be less help with that genre.
Would be nice if you could outline some more specifics about what kind of stuff you like though if you want good suggestions.
the shrouded lord wrote: anyone got any suggestions? looking for something fairly (last five years) new, with a good plot and characters, either fantasy or sci fi?
That's... far too generic. I think we could say a gakload of them, but I'll recommend the two 2nd season animes that are being released now:
- Log Horizon
- Psycho Pass
@Chromedog - I hope you love Psycho Pass. It's phenomenal, the whole plot, world, setting, it was phenomenal.

i am fine with fanservice, its just when there is far too much of it.
Well High school of the dead was rather gak in general. The only redeeming feature was an interesting take on how zombies know you are there (ie, entirely sound based).
Other than taking place inside video games, SAO and Log Horizon are pretty much entirely different shows with entirely different themes.
Also, it amuses me that Log Horizon, where they're trapped inside the game as if it were real life, uses a lot more video game mechanics in it than SAO where they're merely playing the game anymore.

I'm in the same boat. I probably couldn't whip up a top-5, but I'd feel pretty comfortable pegging Moribitio at #1. I really can't recommend it enough, it does pretty much everything right. If anyone hasn't seen it, at least check out the first 3 episodes.
Rainbow Dash wrote: What's some good Vampire anime's that's not...Hellsing or Vampire Hunter D
I think the closest I've come to enjoying a vampire anime is Shiki. I hate vampire-stuff in general and that got pretty close to making me overlook it.
Psycho pass: What can I say. Dominator set on "remove this crazy person from this world" setting makes them explode in a fountain of gore. It's dark and distopian with a rather sociopathic computer system (Sybil) that runs it.
Arise is a prequel. We know how it's going to end.
I quite liked Psycho pass. I felt it mirrored how some cities in the Infinity (by CB, not Disney!) setting might be run. With the hologram clothes and personal assistants and heavily controlled populations and all.
GrimDork wrote: Woah. That could be cool. Somethings animes do better than actual people. Interesting.
Well they took the best episodes and made them an animated story. Skipping over the boring episodes and just combining them into a story. The original actors got on, and redrawn and animated to be kind of awesome.
I enjoyed it.
(EXCEPT THE DUBBING OH MY GOD THE DUBBING)
They are bit late with adding the sound and voice acting into it. Otherwise it is pretty good.

Shiki is fantastic. I too am not that much of vampire-stuff but Shiki is a really nice anime. It was a joy to see the plot being unfolded, the pacing is superb and if I watched it when it was being released I'd probably go mad with the cliff-hangers.
Ok guys, I know this isn't really anime, but considering I already shared here something like this before and well, you all know how I am for KLK I decided to do it anyway.
As you may or may not know, my slowly painted SM army is KLK themed: I already shared some before but here's my first 2-stars - the 4th Company, 3rd Squad Sergeat - and the first 3-stars, a Terminator. I really need to beat my dislike for writting stuff because I have been thinking about the fluff and although I have lots of ideas in my head, I never seem to have the will to write it... anyway, here they are!

Funny enough I have discovered I love painting the Alpha Legion color scheme
Rainbow Dash wrote: What's some good Vampire anime's that's not...Hellsing or Vampire Hunter D
I'm going to second Blood+. It's a vampire anime, but you don't really realize it until a few episodes in. It's not the traditional angsty pale-fest, or completely taken over with gorebloodmonstering (though there's a bit of that).
Trinity Blood is another (honestly, just do a search for anime with ''blood" in the name) where the main character is a vampire in the employ of a world-dominating Catholic Church. There's an android with pistol auto-loaders in his arms, giant 3-bladed scythes, and many, many fantastic hats.
Blood+ is a good one yes, but skip Blood-C I think it was called. That one was Weak.
Trinity Blood wasnt bad either, at least until you get to the non-ending that doesn't really wrap up anything, like they were expecting to make more of it.

Just to see what the kerfuffle was about I decided to start watching it. The first 5 minutes threw me off a building thats all I can say O.o
Ashiraya wrote: Just watched the latest Attack on Titan IoT and began with the first two parts of Parasyte.
Damn, that anime is like body horror made into an entire plot.
So far i've seen all but the latest episode of parasyte. It's such a fantastic anime. In fact the extent of how f**ked up it is makes it that much better. I'm surprised this show isn't getting more of a following. That said the manga was from 1990 and i don't know if they would've shown something like that back then (probably but it'd be fairly graphic). Anime these days just don't seem to have the quality of stuff like 'parasyte'. I dunno maybe back then there was more high school beat-em-up/fighting type anime and these days it's all about harems and crap. Ugh.
I've been meaning to watch both 'supernatural' and the 'supernatural' animated series. I get the feeling i'd love both.
I like Supernatural alright. I think I somewhat prefer the Buffy approach to evil and monsters as opposed to supernatural's, but I have still had fun watching it. Buffy has that stuff as more of a gray area, at least on some cases, Supernatural pretty well runs with the "if it's red it's dead" style, helpful ghosts will still get put to rest, only half evil vampires will still get decapitated, monsters mostly not harming people and 'just trying to get by' are still executed, etc etc. It's not a huge thing, most of what they go up against is pretty black and white anyway.

Yeah Supernatural has been getting on my nerves in terms of that. It could be someone eating like a small amount of food, and boom headshot by Dean.
Definitely lots of "Badass Moments" although they do tend to talk about their feelings too You gotta love the episodes where their Not-Selves exist in books and they learn of the existence of fan fiction

I like it better when they get killed and then I end the episode.
Though I have been watching Jormungand. They go through many characters in a few episodes.

anime in the 80s and 90s was much...more violent and extreme and just generally awesome.
I saw the remake of Fist of the North Star and it was garbage.

you Know because the Animatrix and Deadman's Party are in no way that violent.
Ok, I'm looking for something fairly actiony, character driven, maybe something that fits in with the animes I listed a my top 5?
also, highschool of the dead was terrible, I think I liked it at the time because back then I had watched barely any anime, and didn't know how bad it was.
I watched the first episode of that supernatural anime on a whim, god that voices...
I really need a sugestion, I've just been watching steins;gate again and again (from like 2 in the morning to like ten at night) . Man, I love holidays, but I wish I could actually get out and do something. I have a friend over and am making him watch steins;gate.
Yamada's first time, AKA b gata h kei, I have watched. The weird/scary part being that it was my girlfrined who suggested I watch it.

Tokkou and Rin Daughter of Mnemosyne (Torture porn btw), Elfen Lied, Akame Go Kill Differ in opinion.
I don't know why you're being like this about it... 80's had many more blood fountains happening then the 90's. That doesn't mean it didn't happen in 90's.

I remember the 80s animes and 80s action films, the gore was tremendously over done. Plus it didn't make sense half the time XD

Either I would Suggest Black Butler or Baccano!
I agree Highschool of The Dead had great animation but most of it was wasted on panty shots and boob shots.
Yamada's First Time was kind of weird to start off and embrassing to watch while I'm at home with my parents.
Wow, just... wow. I'm finally up-to-date with Log Horizon's S2 and it's just... wow.
The flashbacks I keep having from my time in vanilla WoW just keep coming as I watch it. I need next week's episode, damn it, finally it's gonna be revealed why Shiroe needs this!

these last few days I'v been drawing heaps, now all I have to do it not be crap at drawing.
I think that australians must be less likely to be good artists, because I know two people who are good at draing and then I myyself am fairly good at drawing anything but faces, which is what I've been practicing.
also, I think I might watch desert punk.watched the first ten minutes of the first episode and it seems entertaining. Also gona check out wolf's rain, tho in my mind it will be competing with spice and wolf.

Desert Punk was ok from what I remember. The MC was a bit much of a pervert and the one chick was a walking fan service machine, but I seem to recall there being action and not hating it.

Holo's a great character. And no its not because she's a wolf goddess. ITs mostly because she's interesting and dynamic. Japan really knows how to build a good relationship between two characters.
Indeed. I especially loved the whole theme of lonelyness and that which comes with immortality (or near thereof) hell, I actually said wow when holo had that whole ranty/panicky thing in S2.

By the end of episode 9, I had to clap. Justice was served. The whole plot revelations hit like a truck. Everything is going according to plan. I can't believe it, but I think it's even better than season 1. This is without any doubt the anime I'll recommend to anyone who doesn't like anime. The plot, the drama, the world, the villains, the cast. (Cowboy Bebop was said to be the one to recommend, but feth that. I find CB to be massively overrated)

I have only been able to watch three episodes. But I couldn't continue watching because of my timetables during the school year.

This brings a thought to mind. I'd like to do a quick survey.
Everyone who's seen/has an opinion on Sword Art Online vs LogHorizon, give a quick rundown of which one you liked better, and whether or not you've ever had an MMO as your primary videogame fix/time waster.
I prefer SAO, and have never seriously played an MMO.

I see where you are getting at
I massively prefer LH. I truly dislike SAO. From the first 2 episodes, I thought I was gonna have a mind blowing MMO anime, like .Hack//sign "V2.0", but much better. What I got was a harem with weak character development and ridiculous villains. The only good thing are the Laughing Coffin dudes.
LH has been amazing, even managing to "explain" why there are monster respawns and keeping it fluffy. As someone who raided 40-men Molten Core (well, not many times as a true addicted) and then plenty of Karazhan and other TBC raids, LH is perfect. They even have someone counting the time between the boss attacks.
So I'm hopping on the Steins;Gate bandwagon. First episode in and my head already hurts. I mean dangit Jim, I'm a historian, not a scientist.
Still, intrigued on how things will continue. Hopefully the coming break will give me a chance to finish some of the series I'm watching (and maybe rewatch Azumanga Daioh.)
Are you saying that Attack on Titan is the opposite of epic?
Because I agree.
Sorry I never got the kerfuffle over Attack on Titan, I found it quite bland and way too predictable.
Literally I watched it with a friend, and I hated the show.
"Oh look that character is going to die."
"How'd you know?"
"He's the most likable how would he not die? But he's going to comeback as something. Let me guess one of those things."
"ummmm."
"Yeah Knew it."
I was about done right before a certain someone got killed off. I was intrigued, it though it may be a surprise prominent character flip like in 'The Blob', but no. I kept watching it after that for some reason but it's pretty far down on my list of shows I managed to make it through. I mean the theme song was cool. And the action scenes could be pretty cool.... but the badguys are deranged large people that like to eat other people... mostly just gross and boring. And the hip mounted mobility gear is just silly. I mean after they shoot a hook out, if it's going to hold them there's no way it's going to come right back out and they jump way more times than they could carry hooks etc. Plus physics probably.
I don't begrudge people that like it, but wasn't my thing for sure.

The villains reminded me of the villains from Evanagelion. They were basically monsters. Nothing redeemable nor anything that we could identify with. No good reasons, no conflicting thoughts just killing. When i think of a villain I think of Mordred from the King Arthur Tales. Complicated and multilayered. Hence why I think there should be an anime based on the True King Arthur tales, not a retelling or rehash. Just telling it as it is. The story can be complicated but it doesn't have to be. Just a simple good vs evil story isn't always the right direction to go. Sometimes a morality vs another morality makes more sense. Hence why I enjoyed the King Arthur Tales. The Villains in it have the right justifications for the reasons they fight. They want the older ways, and King Arthur wants newer ways to make his people happy. It was a clash between the old and the new.
Though I can see why people like Attack on Titan. Yes the animation is good. But god forgive the story is a mess. All the characters are well. Not interesting to me.

While they have a similar premise (players trapped in an mmorpg), they're very different shows. SAO focuses on character development and how the characters struggle to deal with their own mortality, and since the players can die for real in the game the stakes are very high. Loc Horizon, on the other hand, is all about the scheming and politics as the characters basically form their own government and act to make their new world a better place, and the most that's at stake is losing some memories when you die and get resurrected. They're both good shows.

But this is an opinion.
Yep. They were monsters alright. They were humans. They just "ate" from the Fruit of Life while we "ate" from the Fruit of Knowledge.
A little disappointed with Akame Ga Kill's finale : ( Still a good show and really interesting results. I just felt like half of the finale was filler and they should have kept the story going. The death of so many characters would have been way better if I had gotten more time to know them. Time to catch up on the manga, and Psycho Pass season 2!
Also to way in on the debate, both SOA and Log Horizon suck. No were near enough time doing stupid repetitive quests and farming : p
Eh, Naruto's alright. It just suffers from being stretched a little due to popularity. If the whole series had focused on Naruto himself, without any of the side-flash's to the backstories of different characters and their adventures, you'd cut out perhaps a hundred chapters of stuff that isn't really needed.

I don't know Kakashi has a far more interesting life that naruto's.
Yeah, generally I prefer to shy away from the side-character subplot heavy anime/manga, but I thought Naruto kept it within reason... for the most part. Bleach has always been a nightmare in this regard. I did think it was funny that the lack of focus on Shino... ever... was a running gag.
Evangelion is a different show. But it isn't scraping the bottom of the barrel like naruto.
I'm sorry, are you seriously trolling me? First I bold the Evangelion, then you say it's a different show now you are using Evangelion, that's a classic of anime, to compare with Naruto?
Did I lose my ability to read english? 'Cause it fething looks like it.

No I am saying its just not for me. IT is for others, but for me it is not a great anime. It is extremely popular and people work it up as the greatest anime ever. And guess what? I get severely disappointed when I find those rumors to be untrue.
I.E. don't work me up to watch an anime and expect it for it to meet my expectations.

Well, it IS one of the greatest ever as you can guess from it's extreme popularity (Hell, this year I got some Evangelion related Tokyo Sky Tree souvenirs and there's plenty more of brand new merchandise so it just keeps going) and the recent movies are pure gold, but I have to admit it's not for everyone.
And if someone says he hates Evangelion because of Shinji I'll be forced to STFU, clench my fists and just nod. feth Shinji.

And if someone says he hates Evangelion because of Shinji I'll be forced to STFU, clench my fists and just nod. feth Shinji.
He's a character I hate the most in that anime.
And one of the primary reasons I hate the anime. I also dislike the centrality the whole story has on him and the show's last few episodes pissed me off to no end.
Reminding me why I hate animes that are just rushed in with no regard for the story first. Pandering too much to the fans than people who just want to watch it for a good story and good characters.
So, upon re-reading The Girl Who Loved (a Harry Potter/Sailor Moon/Ranma 1/2 crossover fanfiction) I decided to give Sailor Moon Crystal a shot.
The fanfiction, being fanfic, talked about 'rampant lesbianism' in the Senshi ranks. Watching Crystal...
Is that true? Is it something that I just completely missed when I was a kid watching it, or maybe something that was bowdlerized out of the television version?
Cause seriously- second episode, Ami gets framed in the super-close-up and gets called 'cute' by Usagi. I mean, what?
lesbian harem? Holidays means that I spend al day drawing and watching anime, infact I just got a deviantart account the other day lol.
I watched about half an eisode of naruto. some guy with green clothes fighting A guywhile wearing weights and then one of them was a pot. the feth?

And that, my dear Padawan, is what I consider the very best of Naruto. From your description, I assume you are talking about Gaara vs Rock Lee. The entire fight is epic, both characters are a joy to see fighting.
The other fight I really like is Rock Lee vs Kimimaro, a character I think that had truly "AWESOME!" powers and kicked ass like no tomorrow.
Spoiler:
obviously he had to die a in a lame way.

Which in the Portuguese version they were considered "cousins". Even my very young self could see something else was going on there.
I watched half of the second season of SAO, mainly because my daughter really wanted too. I enjoyed the first half of the original. It wasn't good but I was enjoying it anyway. Then it jumped the shark.
I got bored with Log Horizon about 3/4s of the way throught the first season. I'll get to season 2 eventually, but I am in no hurry.
Lately I have been watching Trinity 7, which I can't objectively judge because I love the Manga. I tried watching Kuwai Complex, but it failed to impress. Romcoms are almost as hard to feth up as harems, but somehow they have managed. I just started the Fate/Stay remake, which was OK so far.
I overdosed on Anime last year, and most of my Japanese pop culture consumption now comes from Manga. I also overdosed on pretentious anime fans who fail to remember that, A, it's OK if we don't all like the same things, and B, that most of anything, including media is average. Hating on things that land in the fat part of the bell curve is setting yourself up for a life of disappointment.
Seriously, look at yet another scene of the anime, I need more like this :(
Daily lives of highschool boys? I actually enjoyed this one more than Nichijou, maybe bc I related to it more :p
What?! Comedy with no MOE?! Where are my cute anime girl protagonists?! This is madness!
Hehe, I kid, I admit I love my dose of moe in my comedy but that one seems mighty fun. I did watch a short sketch a while ago and it was Nichijou levels of Random. Thanks for the Toradora suggestion too, Asherian Command, but I think I'll try to watch this one first.
Toradora is a classic. You should try My Teenage Romantic Comedy as well. Unfortunately it stops halfway throught the story, but the second half is on the way.

So is Haruhi Suzamyia.
There are both classics.
I like both.
Haruhi Suzamyia was on my watch list when it got dropped by Crunchyroll. I was very disappointed.

You can't legitimately watch it anywhere. You can't even buy a legitimate copy of it. You have to watch illegally because the company that owned is out of business.

Ah lol well if it's moe you're after than there is always Azumanga, but it is not super intense or random comedy like Nichijou.
But then again, Ordinary Lives of Highschool boys does have some moe...
Already seen Fate/Zero (also liked it) I’ll drop Soul Eater into the queue. Probably won’t get a chance to watch anything new until after new year’s, but a stocked queue is a happy queue.
Right gents, it's time for that "Mind feth" moment you've been eagerly waiting for. So, yesterday roaming my youtube subscriptions I learnt about the music video "ME!ME!ME!". I'll let the "Know your meme" do the presentations:
On November 17th, 2014, a preview of the animated music video for Teddyloid’s “ME!ME!ME!”[1] was released on the official website of Japan Animator Expo[2], a weekly web series launched and curated in collaboration between the Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno’s Studio Khara and the Japanese media company Dwango in late October 2014 as an outlet to showcase various works by up-and-coming artists, followed by the release of the full-length music video on November 21st. According to the official description, the music video illustrates the story of a young man being “attacked and ravished by many girls.”
Following its release, the music video was instantly met with high acclaims from the viewers and critics alike, many of whom cited its high quality animation and catchy-sounding composition, as well as its suggestive themes intended for mature audience and the enigmatic premise of the music video, especially surrounding the role of female protagonist Mimi.
Throughout the week, the music video for “ME!ME!ME” was reported on by several English-language anime news sites and other forums, including AnimeNewsNetwork[3][4] and NeoGAF.[5] It also soon reached 4chan’s /a/ (anime) board, where numerous discussions[6][7] took place at length, with many threads eventually reaching the limit of 500 posts per thread.[8][9][10] In addition, dozens of character fan art inspired by the music video began to emerge on illustrator communities on the Japanese web and overseas, such as pixiv[11], Tumblr[12] and DeviantART,[13] as well as several booru-style imageboards like Danbooru[14] and Gelbooru.[15]
Oh, and if I'm not wrong, the guy who did most of the "Panty & Stocking" soundtrack was the one who created the music.
And because a picture is worth a 1000 words:
This has Evangelion references through the roof, including one I shat my pants with delight because of how awesome it was:
So, overall, one of the best theories I read was how anything in extreme, including Otaku culture, will pretty much destroy you, leaving you a husk, thanks to an endless cycle of despair and failure (if you watch the video, notice how the end frame is the same as the begining). Another theory is concerning drug abuse.
Because I'm a dumb SoB, all I got was "GOD-DAMN, this "Boss" is fething awesome! Look at that awesome fem-dom position in the chair!" - and - "I totally want a Demon-Prince of Slaanesh based on her and the girls as Deamonettes".
So, in case you haven't noticed, it's EXTREMELY NSFW. And I mean EXTREMELY. It will have some nudity, mostly breasts but (probably because of censorship laws) no vaginas, and some gore and other disturbing elements (to the common mortals that is. Me, I loved the entire ride ). Well, here ya go:

feth. what did...I just...no, bad internet.
I am legitimately unsure whether that video aroused or terrified me.
I suddenly want to draw myuri and makise from steins; wearing santa clause lingerie.
I'll be...back... In an hour or so. *grabs pencil and evil laugh*

I have a fan website dedicated to stein's gate in mind XD
Yeah I watched Me!Me!Me! it was an interesting watch. I watched and thought huh. Interestingly enough I saw all the references. And the badass first person shooter bit was kind of my liking.
He knows how to make fun of the Otaku culture, and how you shouldn't throw away your family relationships.
I really don't have time to draw any nearly-rule-34 at the moment. Lately I haven't been sleeping. (got two hours last night first time in three days) and I'm on holidays with nowhere to go. so All of my time has been xbox, reading, drawng, writing and MMA training. less of the latter because I broke my punching bag A friend said I should join deviant art So I've been drawing pretty much non-stop. unfortunately, i have pencil-ADD and will half draw something then get bored and half-draw something else. at the moment my desk is covered in half or less drawings of:
Kimblee from fullmetalalchemist. A weird monster thing I'm calling the arco-crawler. My OC who has pyromancy. said oc's special revolver. Okabe/ houein KYOMA!
the prince of death (my artistic licensed version of the grim reaper), Holo from spice and wolf. mauh (devil form) from the devil is a part timer, the bouncer big dady from bioshock. subject delta from bioshock two, which I sure as hell better be getting for christmas. a landscape shot of a desert. greed/ing from fullmetal. mustang from fullmetal, alphonse from fullmetal.
and more.
so, Maybe ligerie girls will get a special time for christmas eve or something. maybe...
anyway, back to drawing, gonna watch the first episode of KLK. clicking the start button...now.

What rule 34? This is a fanwebsite not a porn one XD
Have fun with Kill La Kill I personally found it entertaining but it was so stupid and over the top. You can't help but love it.
Maybe thats what I expect from the makers of Gurren Laggan.
I just want them to make an anime and instead of it being stupid it deals with the horrors of war. Oh god. I am picturing a Spec Ops: The Line Anime. Oh man wouldn't that be awesome.
Also, just saw the Korra season 4 finale.... that was... quite a daring ending.
Loved the season!
Eh. It was open ended. Could be a Certain relationship. But Eh. I thought a few characters should of died though. Should of made it bitter sweet. (Fire bender dude should of died outright)
I like how they did it. (The relationship, they would make a great couple, but sadly korra won't have a child ever.) Would be funny for another avatar show where it doesn't focus on the avatar and focuses on some adventurer a hundred years after the events of the legend of korra, where the avatar line is set up and going.
And where we follow a mixed cast on misfits. Basically mercenary group going around trying to get stuff together.
the shrouded lord wrote: BTW, that eyeglass thing she wore would be absolutely terrible in actual tennis. which is all I could think everytime she was on screen.
Uh, you do know that Nick.Com has all of Korra seasons 3 and 4 available on demand. With pretty good quality, too. You just have to sit through a few commercials- which, considering it's a show meant for television, it's paced and cut for anyways.
Me!Me!Me! was rather interesting. I find it fascinating the sorts of things I'll gladly watch/look at now, as a student of the Arts, that years ago I'd think were entirely pointless. That video had some fascinating animation and some incredible talent put in it- I loved the transitiony bits where they used the glow cables and blood spatters as pieces of linear expression in their own rights.

I thought it was awesome. But kind of like what what WHAT IS GOING ON?
Yeah Korra is very good, and yes you should all watch it. We need more western anime.
LordofHats wrote: Just saw the end of Korra and dear god it's like someone read all the Korra/Asami fanfics and decided "lets feed the gak out of that!"
Exactly my thoughts.
Man there will be so many fanfics at the end of this season :/

If that episode 2 made you react like that, you are in for a wild Ride.
Oh, Nui, how I miss you <3. You were so fun, sexy and troll.

That's isn't bad. If you don't like it you don't have to look at/read them
P.S: I freaking love this gif Totally my reaction when "Lilith" first appeared and the girls transformed into the badass version.
Its not about like/dislike, I was just shocked XD I've never seen a cartoon that seemed so aware of its fanbase that it literally fed them ship fuel for what has become the most popular ship in the series XD

Really? I'm gonna go with the picture you threw out. At first it was arousing, then it got more so with some weirdness, then it got to 'wtf?' and 'lol 2deep4u'.
I think everyone saying the Korra/Asami finale is fan service is wrong and ignoring everything done to build it, which is why the ship's so prolific in the first place.
