Well they don't all have the same universe anyway.
The original follows the Universal Century starting with Gundam, then goes Stardust memories, Zeta, Double Zeta, Char's counter attack then Unicorn if I remember correctly. 08th MS team fits in there somewhere as well, probably somewhere around SDM and the original or Zeta, but has more focus on the ground troops. Rather than having the super suits they have the normal mass produced stuff so the action is somewhat more intense. You won't get Char's awesomeness in it, but you will get Norris who is about as good with a Gouf as Char is with a Zaku II and also a badass.
Spoiler:
I'd say maybe start with it then move onto which ever timeline looks coolest.

Gundam is rather easy to get into to, just poke around youtube or go on wikipedia and check out the different shows. When you find one you like just start watching. That works for the AU ones as they are all seperate story lines. If you want to get into UC (Universal Century) I would suggest going with 0079. The animation is dated and the story is rather cliche now, but it's a good starting point. This will introduce you to Char and Amuro Rey who are the two real protaginests of UC gundam. After 0079, go with MSG Zeta. It's probley one of Tomino's best works next to space runaway ideon. A dark and gritty storyline with beautiful mobile suit designs makes a winner in my book.
The story line in universe is 0079, 8th Mobile suit Team, 0080 War in the pocket, 0083 Stardust rising/memory, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, MSG double z or ZZ, Chars counter attack (which finishes off the Char/Amuro story line)
Another note on Gundam is that there are compilation movie versions of a number of the series, including the original and Zeta. That's how I started with the UC timeline and it's not a bad way to kind of feel things out if you're not sure you wanna commit to watching quite so many 50-episode series. You certainly miss out on a lot though, so there's a good chance you'll want to go back and watch the whole series.
Honestly Gundam works best in production order a lot of the time. Most real Gundam fans will tell people to start with the original and work there way from there, but I feel that doesn't work. Yes the viewer will get the feel of what Gundam actually is, but the dated animation is a bit issue for most people to handle. That being said I'd say that the original Mobile Suit Gundam is probably best watched in movie form. The TV series and movies both hold equal status within the timeline even though they contradict. Also the movies have improved animation over the TV series and makes more sense story wise.
If anything I would show people Gundam 00 as its a really good AU representation of the original MSG just wrapped in a very different packaging.

My fav AU's where Wing (just because wing Zero) After War Gundam X ( I really wish they would translate it and release it in North America). Seed and Destiny while not good shows IMHO did do good things for the Gundam franchise, even if 10% of the people who liked S/D get into UC gundam that is a good thing.
Victory was another one that I took a while to watch, I am kinda sad that I didn't watch it sooner. It starts off slow but the body count soon piles up in 'Kill'em all tomino" tradition. I also liked F-91 and wish it got made into a full TV show instead of a movie, but dems the breaks sometimes eh? I haven't read the Crossbone Vanguard although I have heard good things about it. Plus it's got one of the best opening songs of all time 'Kimi no Mitsumete' The time i'm seeing you. Awsome song especially with the open scequence of the colony doors being cut open then the mobile suits rushing in.... great show =o]

Gundam X was good. I've been rewatching Gundam Wing lately and while I used to absolutely love the design of the Wing Zero from the TV series when I look at it now it looks a little off in my opinion. Also the plot of the TV series is just awful. It has so many holes that even SEED is left in the dust when it comes to plot holes. SEED was a good entry in my opinion. It did a lot of things right, but a lot of things wrong too. Destiny just made all the bad things from SEED worse. The world would be a better place without Destiny.
I actually hated Victory. Too many whiny little kids for my taste. The battles were also a snore fest. Every single woman was a wacko. I'm starting to think Tomino has had the worst luck with women in life ever. Fuala Griffon was so scary. That woman still makes me cringe.
F-91 was awesome! I wish it would have been a series rather than a movie. Also the Crossbone manga is ok. The designs in the manga are outright awful and the plot is ok. I still enjoyed it though.

You do realize its the same mecha designer right? Its not as bad as all the Gundams from F-91 to Gundam X as they are all essentially the F-91 Gundam with a few modifications here and there.
My favorites so far have probably been Zeta, Turn A, and Unicorn, although I've only seen the first two episodes of Unicorn. Plotwise it's been pretty standard UC/Gundam fare so far, but the animation has been absolutely amazing, and the characters have at least been likeable, which has been one of my major beefs with a number of the other series, most notably Wing, Stardust Memory, and Double Zeta.
I enjoyed 00 as well, but the story was a bit forgettable.
May I also recommend Yondemasu yo Azazel san? Good for a bit of fun
I'll check it out, thanks!
I dunno, man. If only they had bumped the character's ages up by 3 years. Then I wouldn't feel so scuzzy. I'm 20, so I sit down, get to watching the show. Haha, sex joke, awkward situation, laughs all around, boobs, yay-
Spoiler:
They're 15! WTF, me?
Also - Spice & Wolf. Sure, it's a romance (with a bit too much nudity in it, I admit. It get better as the series went on). But I have to admit, I was just as interested in the bartering sections. Yes, I'm a dork like that.
I've seen some of the old stuff, don't remember much about it. Remember liking 8th Squad. Liked Wing. Liked 00.

Victory did have a lot of whiny kids, but it did have a lot of in your face death.

0083 was also rather good especially the denbromium =o]

Victory being really grim dark was cool to see in action, but I feel it was poorly executed within the show. Real life =/= entertainment. As incredibly realistic as it was to literally kill characters off after 1 episode or 2, it wasn't very entertaining. I cared little for the deaths of those who passed. Some people also died needlessly like that one guy who rammed himself into the tire of the battleship. Stupidest death in the whole show since he didn't go after a vital structure. In fact his death was a joke.
Spoiler:
Best use of death in the show is when Uso's mom dies and he's just holding her head in the helmet. That still get me.
I never finished L-Gaim. It bored me half way through because it had too much comedy. Ideon was ok and then I watched the movies and absolutely loved them! The movies fixed all of the issues with the TV series.
0083 was good in an action sense. I turn my brain off when watching it since it has so many "wtf that makes no sense" moments. xD

I do agree with you in Victory, it's good to me, but might not be your cup of tea. (Then again I like project a-ko and sailor moon so different strokes for different folks and all that jazz) If I want to watch a good story line for Gundam I will watch Zeta again. IMHO probley the best Gundam from start to finish. I believe when Tomino was doing Victory he was at the depths of his depression and alcholoism and was just offing people left right and center.
Be invoked was really good and as you said tied up the loose ends from the TV run of eps. I did like the 'kill'em all' aspect of it.

One of the best story line Gundams I liked was 0080 War in the pocket, the redheaded step child of the UC (along with turn A). I liked Bernie and his death was rather tragic. Plus I liked the look if the NT-1 Alex.
Both Versions of FMA are I deed great, but Brotherhood has the much better ending I think. I may have to see about rewatching that again here at some point.
Oh, currently I'm watching Samurai Seven. You'll never guess what it's based on!!! Good series, though my watching of it is on hold as my computer is Still broken.

Yeah I have to agree with you. I think Tomino was incredibly depressed during that show and honestly was not putting out a good work because of it. Zeta is great and in a lot of ways I see it as the Empire Strikes Back of Gundam. Zeta is probably one of the best examples of Tomino's work besides the original MSG and the Ideon movies.
Has anyone seen ZZ Gundam? I love that show once it becomes serious. I wish Tomino wouldn't have tried to ruin the MSG franchise with that awful start.
Spoiler:
Also Haman Karn had the worst death ever. It was so unsatisfying. I think it would have been better had she lived to see the repercussions of what she did and was actually in CCA or something. It was such a waste of a good character.
0080 is great and as a kid I didn't see why it was good. Now since I'm about 10 years older than my first viewing I tear up whenever you see Al just cry at the end while everyone else is still talking about war like its a good thing. I think that OVA is the biggest reality check for the entire franchise since you see the actual effects of war on a child and you see just how changing it is.

Hmm... depends on how you define mechs. If you mean strictly 'robots' I'd try:
Last Exile (is up to it's animated eyebrows in war)
The Silent Service (cold war subs)
the movie version of Blood the Last Vampire takes place on a US base in Japan against the background of Vietnam, but the war is more a background then a plot point
Blue Submarine Number 6 (*contains some mechish content)
Fantasy:
Ninja Scroll (more about trying to stop one from starting)
Record of Lodoss War (largely about trying to stop one)

I got about half-way through, and I still plan to finish it at some point. It certainly started out really bad, although not quite as bad as I'd feared based on its reputation. It definitely started to get better further on, but Puru still annoys the everliving gak out of me. Several times each episode I find myself wondering why anyone else in the show puts up with her, Beecha, and Mondo. I was the same way with Macross 7 and Basara.

I have to agree about Beecha and Mondo. I didn't find Puru to be that annoying to be honest. I hated Basara and the entire crew from Macross 7 so much. I have no idea how I put up with Macross 7 to the end. That show is so bad in my opinion. I don't see how anyone likes it.

I didn't mind the rest of the Macross 7 crew too much in and of themselves, but liked them less and less throughout the show as they didn't seem to bat an eye as Basara routinely and unapologetically put millions of lives in danger to satisfy his own whims, and was considered a good guy. The only one who seemed to notice or care was Gamlin, and his reward was to get more and more marginalized as the show went on. The only reason I stuck with that show was because I was such a big fan of the preceding series, and I'm in the same boat with Double Zeta. I'm kind of dreading the episode when Puru 2 shows up.
It doesn't technically count as an "anime" but I've been playing through story mode of the new Blazblue game.
Other than that, Excel Saga and Howl's Moving Castle were the last things I watched.

Not all the way through. I've seen bits and pieces of it. I keep hearing it was really silly for the first 1/3 to 1/2 then it 'grows up'. I do love the first ep where Bright Noa is tossing oranges though, kinda amusing.

I was the exact same way. The first gundam I saw was 0079 on a bad Hong Kong sub that had Cantonese and English sub's so I kinda knew what to expect when I watched 0080. Boy was I wrong. I way young and just didn't get it, I watched it a few more times and each time I got closer to Burnie's fight with the Alex I would get closer and closer to tearing up. I full on have man tears when I watch that ending now. Great OVA and possibly the best storyline in all of UC.

Oh yeah I totally forgot about Gamlin. That was the only reason I even paid attention to the show and his lack of appearances was disappointing. Basara was so full of himself the entire show and did nothing to help others. He simply kept insisting that his music would do something even though he failed like 12+ times before it actually worked. That really bothered me since he's essentially doing the same thing over and over without thinking maybe he's doing something wrong himself. He's a very irresponsible character and that's why he becomes a space hobo after the OVA according to one of the Fire Bomber albums.
Puru 2 is essentially a brainwashed Puru so she's just vengeful and much less annoying.

I didn't even know it was possible to watch the original MSG with those kinds of subs. I'm guessing this was back in the 90's before it aired on TV when you watched it right?
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that tears up towards the end. Man its so depressing and this year I thought it'd be funny to watch it on Christmas Eve. That's my only gripe with watching it, I'm signing up to feel down for about an hour or two after watching it.

Yes, it would of been about 89-91 some time around there for the original MSG 0079. Like I said it was a bad bad hong kong sub on VHS. After that I read the 0083 manga that Viz did which used the cells from the anime as the artwork. It was a really good read. After that I saw 0080 ( 94-95 ish).

That's crazy. By any chance did you get to read the MSG novels which were translated over here around that time?
I never knew Viz did a manga of 0083. Was it an American only release?
So I've learned this morning that the movie edited version of Gurren Lagann has an expanded and even more epic ending than the finale shown in the series. Going to have to move that to the TOP of my watch list now.

Quite so. Things get even BIGGER.
The first half (first movie) is largely the same though.
Sorry if I am interrupting a certain shows disccusion, there seems to be multiples going on at the moment. lol But I wanted to know if anyone else is watching the ongoing Gundam ova Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn? I only watch the dub version, and I believe the latest episode, 5 or 6 if I am correct?, is out. I figure Red Comet might be
Nice! ^ Im really disappointed that it is only 8 episodes long :( But they really put a lot of effort into the visuals for this series, it is so freaking amazing. In the few action scenes they have had, I would have to say they are some of my favorite
I have been keeping up with Unicorn, but unfortunately I have only watched episode 1 through 3. I have number 4, but I haven't had the time to sit down and watch it. Also there's only going to be 6 episodes not 8.
Oh right, sorry it has been a while since I watched episode 4 so I couldn't remember the full number lol 4th is the best episode imo, but thats just b/c of the high def fight scenes and some other stuff that I don't want to spoil. Have you or anyone else watched the other latest gundam series, sorry I can't remember the name of it. The main character is a pretty young boy (no duh lol) but the threat it like aliens or something. ringing any bells?
Yeah that's Gundam AGE. I've been keeping up with it and in my opinion its ok so far. Nothing about the show has really stood out to me. The first arc was rather meh and incredibly typical of a Gundam show. The second arc so far has shown no improvement although the Gundam AGE-2 looks awesome.
oh ok. because I watched the first 2 episodes and was not really impressed either. It just seemed to weird and cartoony. Is the original series mobile suit gundam your favorite?
Its one of my favorites. Its rather hard to say what is my absolute favorite since I like a lot of them equally. For instance in my opinion the best of the AU Gundams is: G Gundan, Turn A, All of Gundam 00 (including the move) and the original SEED and Stargazer. For UC I'd have to say almost everything is really really good except Victory. F-91, 0083 and the MS-Igloos are good, but not as good as MSG, Zeta, ZZ, CCA, Unicorn, 08th and 0080.
I almost forgot MS-Igloo there. Nazis in space!
Also Gundam AGE isn't too cartoony its just it treads water I've already seen.

I almost forgot MS-Igloo there. Nazis in space!
Also Gundam AGE isn't too cartoony its just it treads water I've already seen.
Oh cool I never saw the MS-Igloo, and the animation style for turn a gundam turned me away lol But no Gundam wing? It was the first of the series that I ever saw, back when it aired on toonami on cartoon network. I re watched it recently and actually found it to be one of my least favorites. Idk it just seemed crappy, especially the battle scenes. But it does have some of the coolest gundams. An I though gundam 00 was alright, not my favorite though. It reminded me of gundam wing a bit. But overall i'd have to say mine are Gundam seed and seed destiny, the 08th, 0083, and Unicorn. Though I always though 0083 was a little to short.

The main thing I don't like about seed/destiny is that to me personally, they are just half hour Gunpla commericals. The story is typical anime and not really well done. The characters are just one cliche after another. After watching stuff like Zeta and CCA I just can't stomach it. Nice animation and fight scene's. But it's a little light on story.
If you haven't seen 0079 ( the origional gundam( I would suggest you pick up the 4 pack OVA. It does a good job of telling the story of Amuro and Char while skipping some of the 'ummm less interesting' bits.
You asked Red Comet what his fav was a few posts back, I would say Zeta/0080/F-91 are my fav UC, while Wing used to be the top now when I look back on it its just whiney and cliche full also. Nice designs on the mobile suits and the Gundams.
If you want to check out some more work by Yoshiyuki Tomino check out Xabungle, Aura Battler Dunbine, Heavy-Metal L-Gaim. Be prepaired to cry at the end of IDEON though, it's brutal and it's where Tomino got his name 'Kill'em all Tomino' =o] If you watch IDEON check out the movie IDEON; Be Invoke, it ties up some of the loose ends from the show, and has some wicked death scenes in it. =o]

ARRR there be spoilers ahead
Spoiler:
Ok cool i'l have to check out some of his other work. An I have seen the original gundam series in full, along with the movies. An I didn't so much think Wing was cliche as much as a lot of their actions and things they said didn't make much sense, like they never gave good reasons lol That and they action scenes were dreadful at times. Heavy Arms custom is one of my favorite suits of all time so they at least had some cool suits. I agree that 0800 was pretty good, but after watching it I didn't think it was that amazing simply b/c their was only like one battle in suits for the whole ova. I think F-91 is a lot better than most people give it credit for to. Do you think they will ever make an animation to follow the series for the events that happen after? They made a manga for it
I would give my left nut for a full on 24/48 episode F-91 sceries that gets into what happened after cosmo babyalonia. Not my right now, thats reserved for them bringing Legend of the Galactic Hero's out with full dubbing
And that was kinda the point of 0080 War in the pocket. We meet Bernard who is a Zeon commando who's sent to find the new gundam NT-1 Alex and blow it up. Well, he makes friends with a kid and the pilot then has to kill his friend. Kinda blows eh?
I didn't list Wing at all, because Wing is ok in my opinion. Its not outright awful, but its just ok. Its watchable, but not necessarily memorable. Also if you guys get the chance watch the Gundam Evolve clips. They are awesome.

I tried watching Naruto Shippuden again, but found msyelf basically skipping through >75% of it because most of it was clip shows of previous episodes.
This is the problem with anime based off of manga I suppose.

naruto is at a point where it's carrying on too much. bleach is going to end after the next season.
Melissia wrote:I wish they'd make more anime for adults that isn't hentai.
I hear you. it's like the stuff targeted at adult audiences that isn't hentai is often similar, like queen's blade and ikki tousen. a series like hellsing or monster would be nice, something psychological would be nice too. ergo proxy was aimed at an older audience, but it was enjoyable fo many audiences. the idea of a brave new world is a concept that goes right above many young viewer's heads though.
the problem with having an anime targeting an older, more mature audience is that people take the liberty of adding gratuitous mature content. prime example: the witchblade anime adaptation. like the comics, the heroine is scantily clad while in costume, which provides fanservice, often gratuitous.
masane amaha, protagonist from the anime
Spoiler:
and sarah pezzini from the witchblade comics.
Spoiler:
while it doesn't help that both are ripe with fanservice, they would be more enjoyable, IMO, if they toned it down some, because, while, yes, in america, like many other countries, scantily clad women sell, a well written story and interesting characters are what become memorable classics.
Melissia wrote:I wish they'd make more anime for adults that isn't hentai.
So more violence and bad language? Or deeper meaning?lol Idk I usually only watch action/adventure anime so adult and younger teen kinda blend together a bit. But most of them have some deeper meaning in them, its just kinda overlooked a bit.
But I never got into naruto, an anime about Ninjas sounded really cool...but it did seem a little to kiddy.
An I though the guy who made bleach said he wasn't even 1/3 of the way done?

the next season is supposed to be the last in japan, like berserk, the manga will continue for a good while.
I just watched the most recent episode of Bleach 361 the other day. I really cannot see this ending anytime soon. He is going to have to bring Aizen back in and cover the Soul King. It's going to happen.
Also, Yugi-Oh abridged, DBZ abridged, Code Ment, Pokemon 'bridged and None Piece are hilarious youtube parodies.

haha oh my gosh dbz abridged is ridiculously amazing. If only vegeta were like that in the normal series...tho he kinda is
I'm thinking of animes like Berserk, Black Lagoon, Noir, and Hellsing. Fist of the North Star wasn't bad either, though it definitely is showing its age..

Yes. Those ones. My favorite one is the Gundam Evolve with all of the Zeta Pluses I believe they were..

Depends on whether the pilot is Jesus Yamato or not.

Diddo, if It's Char or Amuro well, they could single handley take out the whole imperium.... and you thought Calgar and Dante had a lot of plot armour
You mean this one RC?
Also depends if it's UC or AU, I could see the devil/colony gundam messing stuff up, the seed/destiny kids also have a lot of plot armour.
Yeah that's the Gundam Evolve I meant. Its like a mini movie with plenty of action.
Char and Amuro wouldn't take down the whole Imperium. They would get shot down. The only person who could take the Imperium on, and get blown to pieces on multiple occasions and still win would be Kira Yamato. He pulls some stuff off that's just ridiculously over the top for Gundam.
I don't really like the animation style for Gundam evolve, and the fighting seems to far over the top. That's why I liked UC so much, b/c it was two military forces battling it out. Rather than like Gundam wing or 00 where is was a few gundams mowing down hundreds of enemy suits.
darkcloud92 wrote:So more violence and bad language? Or deeper meaning?lol
Well for one, it'd be nice if it didn't involve goddamned middle to high school students.
this, 100% this
it's really annoying to always see middle tob highschool kids as the cast of every fething anime, it gets really annoying really fast.
some good anime with older casts you may like:
- golgo 13
- eden of the east
- lupin the 3rd
- ergo proxy
- monster
- excel saga
trigun, outlaw star, dragon ball z, valkyria chronicles, blue submarine no.6, Mobile Suit Gundam 008th MS team. But you guys are right, they are mostly made up of a younger generation lol Id list Full Metal Alchemist, but the Elrics are younger

G13 was awsome. The origional OVA and the new sceries where both well done IMHO. Gotta love Duke Togo. =o]
I would also suggest Melissa Legend of the Galactic Hero's. Good show, main cast are all solders not whiney highschool kids. The space battle scene's are set to classical music while involving 50,000-150,000 ships per side. I'm at around episode 42 or so. Lots of politicing and backstabbing. Over all I give it a 9/10. My only problem is that is not translated into English, if you want to watch it you have to watch it sub titled but that is alright Central Anime did a damn good job imho.
I second the suggestion for Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Its an awesome show, but I absolutely hated Yang in that show. It was like watching L from deathnote all over again except in space.
I ghess having a cast in hight school never really annoyed me since I am in hight school.... You do have a point though. It is stratigic though. They make the protagonists in highschool so that they appeal to a larger audience. They are mature enough that adults can watch them and not pull all their hair out but younger kids can look up to them too.
Ledabot wrote:You do put up some crazy stuff. also, the fish show was really weird. Earths ecosystem gust got wasted by gas. wtf.
I think in biology class they taught us how cells evolved or mutated. How it went from a plain protoplasm to ones with "hairs" which then turned into
means of locomotion.
Now if we take that concept and applies it to those fishes @_@ ...
Yea. At the end they clamed that the bot parts wern't manmade, they have no screws or something. I thought that hay, why don't they just take out the bots, then no more problem, but if the fish are making them for themselfs. Ok this is just weird, and the Earth is screwed. This stuff more potant that chaos, I swear. They just need to strange particle bomb the crap out if the planet before it spreads.
Now I want to see. Fish vs. nids and fish vs. flood. Yummy.
I started it, and it seems pretty interesting. I really like those Japanese masks that he and Ichigo (from bleach), along with the type that Corpses has.
Not seen Darker than Black, but Avatar The Last Airbender is pretty awesome. That reminds me, I should check out the status of the second series of that show....

I'm seeing a spring to mid 2012 release date, so NOT TOO MUCH LONGER. I hope.
Did anybody else figure out the twist? In the 6th sense its the guy is really dead, in the village it is the monsters arn't real and its modern times.
In Avatar? The original is an incredible story, good action and voice overs. The twist for the live action is that you are expecting the same, but it turns out to be crap!

Most recent one i think was angel beats.
Also blue exorcist, And Sacred 7.
If they whernt subtitles i would watch them more often. But alas i can pay attention to the screen for long. Its usually when i paint when i watch anime/shows/lectures for class.

That's what PM's are for.
I just finished watching the first 3 parts of Gundam unicorn. Not bad, not truly amazing or revolutionary but interesting. I really like the look of the Animated MSN-06S Sinanju. I got the MG kit and its a work of art imho.
I also re-watched about 10 episodes of Gunslinger Girl. I really forgot how good this show is. The opening song makes we want to cry everytime I hear it.

I thought Claes had it bad I totally forgot about Angelica and her problem. poor poor Marco. Same with Elsa =o[
Have I mentioned that I love the youtube tags. =o]
The Mad Tanker wrote:After many years, I finally started watching Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood to be exact) and wow, this show rocks
Finally! You have to watch both though, because they are both amazing in their own distinct way. I watched FMA then watched FMA brotherhood in that order, and am glad I did. The ending to Brotherhood is so satisfying and way better. Though don't get me wrong they are both practically equally amazing in every other aspect, I think at least. I still refuse to pick a favorite
I think it's better to watch the original FMA before you watch Brotherhood. There's a ton of filler in the original that fleshes out, aka makes stuff up, to fill in gaps from the manga but it's so well done you do t know it's filler.
Then you watch Brotherhood and like, the first eight episodes cover the first season of the original. The story seems to move so much faster because all that filler is gone. There's another story shock reason to watch Brotherhood second that's more just personal amusement, but I can't elaborate without ruining it.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also Yes, Geass was amazing and I cried at the end of it.
LORD_PANTERA wrote:I am not really a big fan of anime but I had just recently watched Fist of the North Star and Samuari Jack.
Then why are you here?!?!lol jk. Samurai jack was pretty cool, and a unique style. What did you think of it in the end? I was let down more than a little, especially as the season went on :/
LORD_PANTERA wrote:I am not really a big fan of anime but I had just recently watched Fist of the North Star and Samuari Jack.
Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star) is one of my favorite shows of all time. Did you watch the original anime, the 1986 move or one of the new Gaidens (side storys)?
Two best theme songs ever =o] I like the second one personally
Was in Best Buy today and figured I'd check out their anime section while I was there. Man has that gotten depressing. Used to have a decent amount. But this time they had less than a dozen titles. I did however find Tales Of Earthsea, a Myazaki film I'd not heard of before so I grabbed that. Based on a book series I've not read, but seen a SciFi movie based on another book from the series. If you like Myazaki's other stuff then you'd like this as well.
The story largely escapes me, or doesnt seem well explained or resolved, and I wonder how much of that has to do with it being part of a book series or if I missed something.
However the characters and their interactions/brief development is well done, and the character and set designs a d animation is Myiazaki's usual top notch.
In the end I rather liked it and it was a joy to watch even if the plot seemed to suddenly change mid way thru the movie, and as I mentioned it makes me want to read the books.
Just replying to darkcloud92 and FabricatorGeneralMike:
I had found the Samurai Jack ending to be a bit of a let down but it was still mean as to watch the fighting scenes, he had his scottish highlander mate with him too.
I had watched the orginal Fist of the north star with english subtitles.
I would also like to add that I had just recently watched the Ghost in the Shell movie.
A mate of mine is trying to get me into the Anime genre of movies by giving me all the ones that he has.
the 3 that I have mentioned are the ones that I have actually got around to watching

I guess that would of been the 1986 streamline movie? I watched that with my mom when I was 9 or 10. Great movie. The TV show goes into a lot more like the manga did. The movie is basically the first 36ish eps of the TV show.
Check out the Heart of Madness website, Superjusfighta2 and the team have done a great job of translating the eps.
Ghost in the Shell have been a fav of mine since I watched the first movie. I've got the movie, SAC seasions 1 and 2, all three manga's and a plush stuff teddy bear sized Tachikoma ( that the GF's grandson stole (borrow) off of me. Plus a little plastic one that sits on the top of my puter screen.
I really like old crotch shot shirow's work. Check out Appleseed ( not the CGI gak the 1988 ova) and Black Magic M-66. BM-66 is really to notch imho, a scientist creates basically terminators and they go amuck and try to kill his granddaughter.
Sorry about the edit, I tried to find the Rei vs Raoh fight but it looks like youtube did a purge =o\
Edit #2, wow im loosing it tonight, forgot the first intro =o] One of the best japanimation intro's ever. =o]
I actually had heard of the game ages ago and just recently heard of the anime. I feel like the anime could have been better with a little more action, but idk what kinda budget they were on. The action scenes themselves werent bad, just low key at time. But it was still pretty good, and I liked most of the characters
Deadman Wonderland. I sincerely hope it gets a second series.. :/
Been trying to get into Kaiji, Tsukihime, a couple of others. Should watch more anime, but I only tend to watch TV while I eat, which makes subs difficult. Oh! And Excel Saga. It's fun. Very fun.
My attention span seems to last for hours painting, and seconds watching things.
Haibane Renmei, very lovely cute story, which becomes pretty deep and dark,
I think it's a lovely displayed story,
and personally a nice slow phased break from all the action anime I tend to watch.
I watched the first episode of the Queen Emeraldas OVA the other day. It was okay, if a bit overdramatic. Is there a recommended viewing order for all the related stuff like Harlock, Galaxy Express, Emeraldas, etc?
Started in on it because I absolutely love Interstella 5555. Great stuff.

There doesn't seem to be any order to watch things in as each moive or ova he does in each universe seem to be self contained except for Galaxy Express 999 although there is some overlap in the Leiji verse.
Check out his wiki page then click on the Harlock linky there is some good information in there.
Have you actually given the show a shot? Its not bad. Its actually quite funny and enjoyable similar to Adventure Time.
Anyways, I've started up Ouran High School Host Club. My g/f suggested it to me since I don't mind "girly" animes at all. Its actually really funny and it has light romance if any at this point.

Ya I just don't like it. But I don't like adventure time either so maybe I just don't like those types of shows. But I did just finish Zeta and just started ZZ. I was actually really disappointed with the way they killed off Jerid at the end of Zeta :/

He had the best death ever. It was totally deserved since he was a loser villain from beginning to end. He was always a joke so its a good thing he had a joke death. He always came back and was like "I'm gonna get you this time Kamille!" and Kamille would just ignore him and deal with the actual threats. Zeta is very good and now that you are into ZZ don't expect the same story telling quality as you go into it. The show starts off really really boring. Yazan essentially becomes a joke. Its awful. Just get past the first 15 episodes or so and then it starts to improve. The earth arc for ZZ is great.
Ya that's why I was so upset! He should have been Kamille's Char, how dare they disgrace him in such a way! I also thought they changed up Char's character a little, he seemed a lot different from the Char I remember from MSG and Counter attack.

Couldn't agree more, Zeta is great as a moving story that makes you care about the characters...ZZ....umm has bright noa tossing oranges and some cool mecha.... =o\ Not that ZZ is bad, just a totally different kind of UC story then Zeta was.
I'm serprised you didn't pit that in a spoiler. I've been watching Shakugan no Shana and so far its pritty good. Just love it when all the chicks want the main male protaganist, even if it makes no sence. Even though it seems to be aimed at girls a bit, I was serprised at the amount of more shonin stuff they did.
You know maybe it is b/c I watched it subbed or that I saw it after, but I do not like Zeta as much as Seed. I thought it was good, but I just did not understand the different philosophical things they were talking about. Like I really tried, but they just seems so random lol I just liked Seed more b/c I understood better, watched it dubbed, and liked the animation quality more. I think it has a lot to do with the fact I watched Seed and Seed destiny first though. Like I didn't grow up watching Zeta when it came out, like I did with Seed, so the nostalgia isn't there for me.
An was anyone else happy when Katz or Ensign died? I was...lol

I was...lol
I think its because you watched SEED and SEED Destiny first. They both introduce some of the same concepts, but don't execute them as well as Zeta does. Destiny drops the ball about half way through the show. It doesn't make any sense, but its possible you were just desensitized to Zeta because you watched SEED first. It happened to me when I first watched Zeta. I didn't get why people loved it so much. I liked it, but not a lot. Now my opinion is different.
I was so happy Katz died. His death was funny too.
Well ya he was such a little punk! He's no amuro ray or kamille bidan, but he tried to act like it. It was almost like he was a mock version of them, like Jerid was a mock version of Char.
Yazan, now there was a good nemesis. He was skilled, brutal, and fearless.

Yeah that's what I hated most about Katz. He was a good kid in MSG and then in Zeta he thinks he's like Amuro and Kamille, but he never matures at all. He deserved his death considering how many times he went after Serah. Man he was so dumb.
Yazan was good till ZZ. Then he's just picking out garbage in dumpsters with a chicken leg in his mouth.
I never liked the implementation of kids in the series though. They always just annoyed me. But ya Katz just became to cocky for my liking.
and oh lol I have only made it to episode 2 so far, so I wasn't sure how cool he was going to be.

Berserk is definitely a favorite of mine. I really wish they would of continued the anime further with the manga story. Alot of the battles would of just been spectacular to see.
Though when is the manga gonna end? Are they going for like Naruto size in length or something? I really just don't want what happened to Trinity Blood to happen to Berserk

I dunno, I still laughed my ass off at the Bunny Girl - Daikon reference (which I did catch the first time through, and spent the rest of the ep trying not to hum ELO - Twilight)
Also just finished Highschool DxD. Was much more in line with my usual taste in ecchi comedies.

I just finished watching the first season of Golgo 13 again. My first experience with G13 was the nintendo video games Golgo 13:Top Secret Episode. I then discovered it was a long running manga and bought a few graphic novels (fall of the forth reich). By then G13:The Mofat Conspericy had come out and I was hooked.
I then watched G13 The Professional and was totally hooked. Next was G13:Queen Bee and this cemented my love for G13. Highly recomended for everyone unless you are like under 18 there is a lot of B00bies and sex in it so...
As far as t.v. shows go I am pretty much set for life. But has anyone watched any good anime movies lately, or know of any good ones? I can never really seem to find any. I have of course seen the most popular ones in America, such as spirited away, howl's moving castle, etc.
I have heard good things about Evagelion, so I started watching the t.v. series so I can work my way up to the movies

I personally didn't like NGE very much, way to much fan service in it (damn you Ganix) and the story was just meh. Then again I like Lucky Star and Sailor Moon....so what do I know =o\
If you want to watch a "Fethed up giant robot show" check out Space Runaway Ideon. It was done by Tomino who also did Gundam.
If you like a little more 'realistic' robot shows Armoured Trooper VOTMOS is also rather well done.
If you like Space Opera's,politicking, lot's of talking and Space ship battles with 150,000-200,000 ships per side set to classical music check out "Legend of the Galactic Hero's"

Thanks, I actually started Ideon. I am on episode like 5 or 6? I remember they had finally just left the colony. But I was getting a little bored of the old school graphics so I started watching other stuff lol It was ok so far, hard to tell so early on though

Yeah that is a problem with a lot of the older shows, the animation just doesn't stack up to todays work. Personally I grew up on the old stuff ( Battle of the Planets, Starblazers, Voltes V, Robotech,) so I have a love for it. I have also found that sometimes the story telling is a little better because they had less to work with. But that doesn't always hold true, there are some real stinkers out there. Some people don't like it and that is perfectly fine (I know the space afro's are a little hard to swallow in IDEON, but grind through it it does get better...actually it turns out to be a mess then Be Invoked comes along and kinda cleans everything up including some of the most epic death scenes in all of anime imho....ok not a cool as Raoh's last words in HnK, but you get the idea).
Cyber City OEDO 808 is another good short OVA to watch only 3 Data's (eps) long, the english dub is just epic for the amount of swearing in it ( the criminals actually talk like criminals) and the story isn't to bad. It's cyberpunk so if that is not your thing then well....=o\
If you like really odd and wired stuff give Serial Experiments Lain a go, interesting show but not everyones cup of tea.
I pray for the day 3 leaves development hell. A movie directed by James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and Robert Rodriguez must be forged of pure awesomeite in the heart of a dying star by cyborg sorcerer from an alternate future riding a tyrannosaur that shoots laserbeams. (Possibly assisted by Doctor McNinja)
Just caught episode 366 of Bleach. I think I heard somewhere that that is supposed to be the end of the anime now? Anyone able to confirm/deny that and site source?
The latest arc in the manga is going to be the last arc, but its serposed to be the same length as the first one which was everything that had Aizan. Basicly, we wont have to worry about losing bleach for a good while, at least the manga.

The original movie was good, Blood+ not so good, manga creepy, Blood C points for being by Clamp, but it's CLAMP (The Old CLAMP, not the nice, New CLAMP. If you've seen X or MKR you know how badly it goes for supporting cast members)

Blood: The last Vampire is great. Highly recomended.
I must admit I do love shows where everyone dies horribly or gets royal screwed, don't know why, maybe I am just a sicko
^^^They need to do a new kirby anime or movie. The previous was just ok. They could do a much better one I think, just as long as its not for little kids again

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES. YES. YES. YES. YES. YES. YES.
It better be that version.
I dunno. We used to call confused fans that didn't understand that Tenchi Muyo was not a single series or continuity 'toonamis' when they would come staggering into forums declaring their confusion.
Fat Tom was at least 20% cooler than buff Tom. Toonami coming back doesnt effect me though as I have no tv service, I just watch everything online and run the feed to my tv.
So I was hopping some of you anime veterans could help me figure out what a certain show I watched a long time ago is. I saw it when I was about 5-6 back in the early 90's. I think the artwork was similar to that of the cartoon version of the hobbit and LOTR. I can not for the life of me remember the premise, just that there was some sort of war going on. I recall snow and two of the characters. One of the characters was a knight, idk if there was anything inside the armor or not. Then the other character I remember was a girl. The only scene I recall is that the knight was supposed to be bad but helped the good guys until the female character kills him by some sort of vehicle. It was decapitation I believe. Sorry I do not have more details, this has been bugging me for years and years.

What channel was this on? Do you remember?
I don't think it was a t.v. show or ova but a movie I believe. I was thinking maybe it was made by MADHOUSE b/c a lot of their stuff, like Lodoss war, reminds me of it

That was going to be my guess "Lodoss War" (ashram was the bomb imho ) Wouldn't be Demon City Shinjuku or Wicked City would it? I haven't personally seen them but on the Madhouse wiki the plots kinda sound like what you are describing and they fit the time frame.
I also have a question to the thread at large, has anyone seen SPT Layzner? I really enjoyed Armoured Trooper VOTMOS and have heard good things about it. But I have found it's always better to get a lot of general opinions then make a decision. Thanks in advance anyone =o]
^^^^ Thanks for the help, but those 2 can't be it b/c it didn't take place in the modern era. Which is weird b/c I remember some kind of tank vehicle that was super strong.
But anyways I have heard of that show back when I was younger. I tried watching it a year or so ago but the site I watched it on had the link die out or something. From what I saw in the first 2 episodes it looked good, but I refuse to watch any more mecha anime until I finish every gundam series. (except for SD of course)
And I have no idea what to say about that video clip above, it looked like a really weird show lol Were those people dying? I just didn't understand it at all

I've got a theory here which will go hand in hand with a history lesson that I just grabbed from Wikipedia. "Similar to the Hobbit and LotR" is a bit of a mixed bag as The Hobbit and Return of the King were both produced by Rankin/Bass (Same company that made Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, etc) but animated by TopCraft, which more or less went on to become Studio Ghibli. Strong anime roots there, eh? The animated Lord of the Rings movie, however, was made by Ralph Bakshi and was considerably different. Most of his fantasy movies were rotoscoped, which produces a pretty particular style, and LotR was one of those. Your brief plot description brought to mind another of his movies, and although I haven't seen it in a very long time myself, I think the elements you mention all pop up on the WIkipedia plot summary. So without further ado, may I present the 1977 animated classic:

Good job on figuring out it was Wizards, I love the spliced in footage of hitler and the nazi's. =o]
Also Good luck on watching every Gundam show, are you just sticking to UC stories or going in for the whole AU package also? (I would suggest skipping mobile fighter G Gundam it didn't do it for me personally but who knows you might like it) Are you going to watch them in chronological order or by when they where made. And for the love of god please skip G Savour......those who have seen it know how bad it is. =o\

I have already seen almost all of them. UC and the other universes. The only ones I have left to watch are ZZ, which I am on episode 15 of, After War Gundam X, Turn a gundam, and the last episode of Unicorn. I preferred the series that were more militaristic the most

Anyone else think Gunslinger Girl was a bit... odd? I mean, maybe it's the fact I've hung around with real Italians, but the characters all REALLY seem like Japanese people transplanted to Italy.
