Buzz Lightyear goes Grimdark - Militarum Tempestus Test Squad Complete ! - Update 16 August @ 2011/03/14 03:02:18

Post by: albinoork

Hi all,

Well the Imperial Guard project is going much faster than expected (here it is http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/346410.page). So I figure it is time to start planning the next project.

My son is two-and-a-half and can't get enough Toy Story 1, 2, & 3 (or any Pixar movie). He takes his Buzz Lightyear plush toy EVERYWHERE. So in an effort to indoctorinate him to the joys of table top miniature wargaming the current plan is to make a Space Marine army based on Buzz Lightyear and Star Command. It's not a very orginal idea, but my son will love it and it will be fun to put together.

Here is the original Space Ranger

My takes on Space Ranger
Variant 1

Variant 2

Variant 3

Variant 4

Okay, due to constraints of the SM Painter there are a few changes needed like purple soles, white fingers w/ purple tips, etc. I'll have to make decals or something with the "SR" for the shoulder pads. Which variant to use? One or two or possibly another variant?

I won't be doing any LEDs to make lasers even though that would be really frickin sweet, but it is waaaayyy to much work. Instead I'll use a translucent red rod in place of the gun barrel on bolters, pistols, etc.

Backpacks are another issue. I'm debating between using jump packs and standard backpacks. I will not be converting wings onto every model (see LED). Jump packs help keep the feel of falling with style but limits the army list. Which leads to ...
... do I use vanilla marines or go "counts as". If jump packs are used than Blood Angels make sense but the idea of an all jump pack army is not very appealing. Fielding a competetive army is way down the list of reasons why to choose particular models/units but I don't want to field a cream puff as well. I've been doing a little wiki-research about the back story and it looks like this will be a minimal vehicle list.

Anyway if anyone cares to share ideas, thoughts, painting tips, whatever please feel free.

Thanks and take care

Edited to add a couple of suggested variants.

This is effing awesome. I can't believe no-one's thought of it before!

I think Variant 1's torso armor with Variant 2's shoulders would look best.

Actually, someone has. http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Space%20Rangers I should have used the search function earlier

And I will be stealing some of his ideas. Though I'm torn between pure humor and grimdark humor

Thanks.

This is pure awesomeness, and i can't wait to see the army start to form up (definitely following this one)

You should have angelus boltguns as the wrist mounted lasers.

Yeah, this is gonna be awesome. I think the white torso with green symbol is better.

I hadn't seen the Space Marine Lightyear art, but the mini I managed to find a while back. Brilliant conversion and art. Super awesome army theme!

Unfortunately it will be a couple of months before anything is painted The guard project is going fast but not that fast. Are those the bolters on the Gray Knights?

The Good Green wrote:I think the white torso with green symbol is better.

I'm leaning that direction too. I am still torn between v3 and v4 (suggested by gearhead and gman).

Also I'm thinking of converting the metal Dark Angels shoulder pads to match the picture posted by lionfire.

Hi all

Well it came down to one big tie. 10 for v1. 10 for v2. a couple of options were added later and v4 received a couple of votes.

The next question. Should I limit the sources of inspiration to Buzz Lightyear and Star Command or open it to any character appearing in any Toy Story movie?

I was thinking using drop pods done as Mr. Potato Head and maybe a chaplin painted as Sheriff Woody.
If anyone has suggestions I am more than open to hearing them.

Thanks and take care

Nice idea for a theme Looking forward to your future inspirations!

Can you fit a jump pack to a Carnosaur/cold one?

Regarding colour scheme I like the #4 myself. The white shoulder pads just look a bit cleaner. Also Angelus boltguns are the Blood Angel version. I think grey knights all have storm bolters, rather than standard bolters.

I was thinking maybe a dreadnought with very short arm as Rex and Hamm as a techmarine
I am leaning towards v4 too (thanks gman).

Hi all,

Thanks for the input.

Here is a sample army list. Call it a first draft because there is plenty of time and room for things to change.

The Space Rangers are a successor chapter of Blood Angels

Buzz Lightyear - Captain w/ power fist (x2), jump pack.

Sheriff Woody & Bullseye - Epistolary w/ might of heroes, sanguine sword, bike

Rex - Furioso Dreadnought w/ blood talons, xtra armor

Mr. Potato Head - Dreadnought w/ heavy flamer, assault cannon, xtra armor, drop pod

Army Men - Scout Squad - Scout (x5) w/ missile launcher, bolters

Hamm (airship) - Stormraven w/ xtra armor

(x3) Tactical Squad - Marine (x10) w/ drop pod, meltagun, power fist

Assault squad - Marine (x5) w/ inferus pistol, power fist

Total points 1,845

Any thoughts?
I haven't used space marines in many years and haven't seen or read much about blood angels. Game play effectiveness is not the most important consideration, but I don't want to field a cream puff.

Thanks and take care

Hi all

I have the majority of the models, parts, items, etc here and ready to go.

I've ordered a bunch of Dark Angel shoulder pads for the left arm and am still debating what to use for the right arm. I'm thinking about matching right shoulder pads to marking on Drop pod so I could use blood angels, ragnars company, ultramarines or one of the other pieces in the drop pod box set.

Sheriff Woody can ride a bike painted like Bullseye or ride a horse. I am still working this idea. The bike makes it easier for opponents to figure out what is what, but a horse would look better.

I will make Flying-Buzz packbacks out of sheet styrene for Buzz and the assault squad.

I plan on making a few test models in the next couple of weeks.

Also included is another version of Space Ranger armor. I've painted the Eagle blue to match the Space Rangers chest insignia. I am still undecided which way to go.

Here are the pics and description of what is going to be what

Any thoughts, ideas, criticisms are appreciated.

Thanks and take care

Hi all.

I have begun assembling the army

Rex is first on the project log. It is a furisoso dreadnought with blood talons. I plan on covering the majority of him with coblestone shaped sheet styrene to give the feel of dinosaur skin.

The following pictures show the progress so far (as little as it is). I plan on filling the gaps or use dissolvent to close them. Does anyone have any ideas for "eyes"? I was thinking of using some spare Tau bits with senors and such. Also, I haven't decided what or if there will be any iconography.

Any comments, suggestions, critiques are appreciated.

Thanks and take care

First of all, I think this is an awesome project that you've started. The cobblestone surface will look perfect for Rex's 'skin'.

albinoork wrote:

I googled some pictures of Rex toys, and what struck me about the eyes is how small they are and how they're set back into the skull. I'm thinking you replicate the normal sarcophagus slit opening, but make it just a like bit larger and add two little GS dots inside the slit opening. I'd put the slit either in the same place as the original, or slightly higher up to visual reference Rex's long nose.

Also, personally I think the green chest skull/wings look getter than the light blue.

Hi all,

Rex is done! At least regarding assembly
Of course, if someone presents a cool idea there is still room and time to make changes.

I finished covering the arms.
The weapons are magnetized to provide some options.
Thanks to Grass4hopper for the eyes suggestion . I really like how it turned out.

Next up -- Army men!

Hi all.

Work has started on Army Men. This will be a scout squad with a missile laucher and a veteran sargent. His left arm is magnetized and will have a few different options.

I am strongly considering using Pig Iron heads instead of scout heads. It looks like the Pig heads are just a bit smaller than the scout heads, but not small enough to keep me from using them.

I have one minesweeper and two will have parachutes.

Thanks and take care

Personally I like the Pig Iron heads better, I think the helmets are important to the Army Man look.

Very nice man! My nephew is the same way with Toy Story, though it never occurred to me to create this much awesome out of that fact!

I definitely second the use of Pig Iron heads. I think they are actually a bit closer to scale than the scout heads. One thing I might suggest for the scout sgt is magnetizing a spot on his back for the combi-melta and having his left hand pointing. I think the gesture would match the look of the rest of the model, an the combi melta as is looks very off balance held out that way, a common issue with GW scale weapons. Having it slung over his shoulder or something similar would move that perceived weight more towards the model's center of balance.

Very cool. I love the texture you've put onto Rex. He looks actually like a very convincing Salamanders Ironclad Dreadnought.

I have seen plenty of marines painted/modelled to look like Buzz, but a whole army themed like Toy Story characters is interesting. I can't decide if you're making a statement that models are just toys and you should have fun with them, or if you're just stretching to see how far you can take theme armies before they break. Either way, if you're willing to play the army, and not be ashamed of your silly mans, more power to you.

I am a bit dubious as to why you chose Blood Angels as your couts-as codex(I see way too much of that, and it enfuriates my red-thirsting plastic mans), but I can buy that it does offer a lot of flexibility in units. Although, if you were takign Woody on a bike, taking a biker command squad with the vanilla codex for bikes as Troops would be pretty good. Admittedly though, the Ham-Airship from Toy Story 3 is pretty funny, if you can model a mash-up of a SRaven and perhaps a McDonalds toy. Although you could just make him Evil Doctor Porkshop as usual if that fails.

I'm sure you know that your current models don't make for a very competitive amry, but you're not going for that. I would at least reccomend getting a squad of bikes from Woody to hang out with, otherwise he will get killed too fast for a character of his stature. You're taking two dreads and a Raven, so you can build a mech. list if you'd like, with hybrid elements(bikes, some jumpers). They'll move fast enough together, especially if you upgrade Rex to a Libby and give him Wings.

Also, if you're playing Blood Angels, unless you're running an all-mech, no combat army, you need Sanguinary Priests. Bo Peep, perhaps? And you still have Etch to play with.

Using blood angels was a simple choice - assault marines as troops, stormraven availability and it's the only space marine army I haven't used. And that's Mr. Evil Dr. Porkchop
to you!

I have some game play concerns regarding a lone libby-on-a-bike especially considering there really isn't anywhere to "hide". Hmmm. Maybe Woody could become a Sang Priest? Maybe Jesse as well?

Thanks for the suggestion. Sargent Hartman looks much better (see pics below).

I also added a couple of parachuters.

At your and timff8 suggestion I looked up the rules for sang priests and my first thought was Little Green Men (LGMs). They are seen in groups of three and it would be fun to model / paint. I am leaning towards putting these in as Woody, Jessie, and Utility Belt Buzz (from TS2). Using characters with more screen time seem to match the importance of sang priests

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

I gave the Scout Veteran sarge a combi-plasma (no pics).

I have been giving the comments about using a Sanguinary Priest or two some strong consideration and thought. In order to add them some major changes will have to be made. I want to use tactical squads over assault squads as much as possible because Space Rangers tend to use their lasers and not close combat weapons. One issue, if the tactical squads are reduced below ten than no special wepaons or heavy weapons

Here is the latest installment of Space Rangers:

HQ - Buzz Lightyear (Captain Tycho) -

EL - Sanguinary Priest
Sheriff Woody w/ power sword
Utility-belt Buzz w/ power fist

EL - Rex (Furioso Dreadnought) w/ blood talons

TP - Tactical Squad (x2)
Space marine (x9) w/ meltagun, multi-melta, drop pod
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

TP - Tactical Squad
Space Marine (x7) w/ meltagun, multi-melta, drop pod
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

TP - Army Men (Scout Squad)
Scout (x9) w/ bolters, missile launcher
Veteran Sargent w/ combi-plasma

TP - Assault Squad
Space Marine (x4) w/ infernus pistol
Veteran Sargent w/ power fist

HS - Mr. Potato Head (Dreadnought) w/ assault cannon, heavy flamer, drop pod

HS - Hamm the Airship (Stormraven Gunship) w/ extra armor

Total Points - 1848

Buzz Lightyear joins with Sheriff Woody and the 8-man tactical squad. Utility-belt Buzz joins the assault squad and Rex in Hamm the Airship. I may change Utility-belt Buzz to Jessie, but there is plenty of time to make the change. Most likely nothing will start on the board.

The more I look at Captain Tycho the more I like him as a fit for Buzz. Both excell in hand-to-hand combat (but don't use a h-t-h weapon), warriors look to them for leadership, and the are both on the edge of sanity. Of course, fluff-wise, Tycho is dead so that puts a bit of a wrench in the works.

What are people's opinions? To power gamer? Doesn't fit with theme? etc?

Thanks and take care

Great work man, I really like the change to pointing/glove with the combi weapons on the back. If you get the chance, try putting a bedroll instead of a backpack on the sarge. I am imagining it looking pretty cool too. (My wife and I are staying at her parent's for a while, so I have to model vicariously )

Awesome idea! I'm surprised, as someone else said, no one noticed the similarities between Buzz and Space Marine armor (I noticed it when my youngest received his first Buzz as a Christmas present...hey! That's a Space Marine! Happier at least...).

Keep up the great work! My youngest is now way past modelling, but I have a younger son who's just hitting his 5s...perfect time for an introduction.

I'm somewhat confused on the tac squads, don't they have to be 10 to have a melta and multi-melta so why is one 7, and the other 9? just a typo?

I would go for razorbacks rather than drop pods, but to each their own. I guess with razorbacks it would be better to have assault squads

Thanks. My oldest son is almost three. He walks around the house saying things like "You are a Toy! You're an action figure. A child's plaything." He is still a little young for 40K, but his favorite army book is Imperial Guard. The way he says it makes it sound much more adorable

Two Tac squads are 10 and one is 8. The way I wrote it is confusing. To me drop pods fit the theme better than Razorbacks and I already have the pods

I am starting on the Tac squads. I am thinking backpacks will be with wings retracted and save wings deployed for the assault squad. Also, I plan on mounting bolters on wrists/ forearms. Any other ideas/

Hi all,

We finally have had some low humidity days here in north Jersey. I was able to bascoat the Army Men and Rex using Army Painter: Color Primer Army Green (pics below).

I will be putting this project on hold for a wee bit. I finally got a few games in with my Guard army (found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/346410.page) and discovered that sentinel squads are terrible. I need to spend a few weeks getting three vendettas ready to go.

Thanks and take care

This little blog has a lot of cool stuff in...I am particularly liking the strong theme that you have going on...the 'green army men' are priceless!

Just one thing to note...if you plan on using these in tournaments, don't they have to have a minimum amount of colours (three, isn't it)?

With regards to the green men, can I suggest a wash with dark green and a gloss varnish? I think they would look even more 'in theme' than they do now if you did that.

I am SO looking forward to some painted Star Command marines!

Hi all,

I know its been awhile, but I needed some time away from painting. Also, I needed to add three flyers to finish my Cadian army in time for MechaniCon.

Time to start painting Army Men

Just a few abbreviations to note.
VGC = vallejo game color
GW = citadel
LBs = I made a few washes/inks based on LBursley's article (found here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/261541.page)

I started by painting three test models. "A, B, C"
C turned out to be a dud for Army Men, however it works for Rex .

The following pics show most steps. I forgot pics of a fews and

The models were primed with Army Painter Army Green.

Step 1 - "A" (left) - Green Ink. "B" (middle) - LBs Algae Wash. "C" (right) - VGC Camo Green than LBs Algae Wash.

"A" step 2 - VGC Sick green

The remaining steps have photos and are sorted by a, b, and c.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks and take care

I'm leaning towards B myself. The next questions is: Green faces or Flesh colored faces?

I can make arguments for both.

For Green - They are army men and should be completely green. Duh!
For Flesh tones - Looks more lifelike and helps break up the monotone color scheme.

I will work on a test model.

I'll go for B from your test schemes, but I think A with a thraka wash would be good.

You could start with a flesh color face and apply green camo make up for a realistic, but still mostly green look.

HI all,

A couple of "skin" test models are complete. Ultimately, I've decided to go with normal flesh tones. Mainly because I like how they look. Also because I don't plan on having any models look exactly like their movie counterparts (Buzz will be close) and I want the army to have a "grimdarky" feel. I'll be trying to balance a bit of humor with smidge of buttkickedness and a wee spot of grimdark.

monkeytroll wrote:Good to see more progress here.

Good to be working on it again
A couple of pics towards the end have "A" with thraka wash. It didn't washout the yellow as much as I thought it would.

I don't know Perhaps you don't have someone walking around house constantly saying "To Infinity and Beyond".

Now that the paint scheme has been finalized I've been working on a few models. I typically paint two or three at a time. For some reason this seems to the best method (for me) when wanting to do better than table top. Typically the bases are done as a squad.

The missile launcher, parachuter 1, plus the bolters from the test models are all in the first batch.

Hi all,

The missile launcher and parachuter 1 are complete (along with test model A & B)!

All-in-all it takes 15 steps per model.
Steps 1 - 6 are green.
Steps 7 - 12 are flesh.
Step 13 assemble. Assembling scout models was surprisingly a pain in the tuckus.
Step 14 matte varnish.
Step 15 basing.

Next up are Sgt. Hartman and red shirt #1.

Thanks and rake care

HI all,

Rogue Wolves wrote:ooo looks awsome man, i like the skin so far

Thanks! The skin helps break up the green.

The Army Men are done!!

Just a review of the process.
0. Basecoat with Army Painter Color Primer Army Green
1. Algae wash
2. vgc Sick Green
3. vgc Scorpy Green
4. vgc Livery Green
5. White
6. gww Thraka Green
7. gwf Tallarn Flesh
8. vgc Dwarf Flesh
9. vgc Cadmium Skin
10. vgc Elfic Flesh
11. vw Fleshtone
12. vgc Cadmium Skin & Elfic Flesh w/ drying retarder
13. Assemble
14. Army Painter Anti Shine Matte Varnish
15. Attach to clear base

Overall I'm very pleased with how the army men look. It should be obvious what thy represent once the remainder of the army is finished.

I used a white background for the pics and was surprised at the results. The photos took a fair amount of editing to adjust the exposure. Next time I will try a light gray background.

Next up - Rex

Thanks and take care.

Hi all,

Rogue Wolves wrote:I really love it, only thing is if you are going to do the skin, why not do Hartmans mustache and the yelling mouth?

Thanks.
Good catch, I wasn't sure if anyone would notice. I really only want two colors on the model and I want to keep some of the "toyness" about the model.

I took a couple of pics using a gray background. Overall, it seems to do a better job of showing the model in real life and does not wash out the highlights like the white background.

Work on Rex has begun. I am trying to paint him in a similar manner as the Army Men. The goal is having people recognize Toy Story Rex as the source. Also, by using extreme highlights in an attempt to keep a cartoonish feel, but still have tuckus kickin' looking model.

The greens are the same colors as those from one of the Army Men test models. I will paint the chest white and the claws black. I haven't decided about the things like wires and exhaust pipes and such.

Here are the steps so far:
0 - Army Painter Spray Primer Army Green
1 - vgc Camo Green
2 - lbs - Algae Wash
3 - vgc Dead Flesh

Thanks and take care.

I like the idea for the stache. I'll try that and see what it looks like before changing the tongue. Thanks.

I finished the green portions of the left arm. I skipped a step in previous post. Here is the corrected list.

0 - Army Painter Spray Primer Army Green
1 - vgc Camo Green
2 - lbs Algae Wash
3 - vgc Camo Green (skipped this one)
4 - vgc Dead Flesh

New Steps
5 - White
6 - Dark Yellow wash - my version based on LBursley's receipes

Anyone have any suggestions regarding colors for the exhaust pipes, wires, etc.?

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Just a quick update.

Work on Rex is progressing quite nicely. I've finished the "white" portion of Rex's hide. I didn't paint as much white as on the real Rex, mainly because I like the green so much.

I only have a finished pic. The steps are as follows:
7. gwf Deneb Stone
8. White
9. gww Sepia
10. gwf Deneb Stone/White - 50/50 mix

11. Black
12. gwf Adeptus Battlegray
13. vgc Stone Gray
14. vgc Cold Gray
15. White (claws only)
16. vw Black - some spots needed more layers than other)

I am happy with black and not using any metallics. It keeps it simple and neat - IMHO.

Thanks and take care

Great work as always, I love this blog.

I only part that I don't love as much is the white on the front of the sarcophagus, I allows envisioned the whole sarcophagus section as representing his whole head, instead of head/torso.

But I can see why you did it to represent the white on his thorax and abdomen.

First, thank you.

Hmm, interesting perspective. I never thought of the sarcophagus as representing the whole head, but now that you mention it I can certainly see it that way. Actually, the whole head - eyes - mouth thing was this most difficult part of the model for me regarding how to best represent Rex. I had considered putting a dinosaur type head on the model, but decided against it because it just looked to damn weird and silly.

A bit of good news. My three year old son saw the model and called it "Rex" without me saying anything.

The picture below was my main reference.

After seeing the reference pic you posted above, I now definitely realize why you painted it the way you did. For some reason I was incorrectly remembering Rex as having a larger head. It's was a real challenge to represent Rex's long tall body on a squat dread frame, but you've done an excellent a job.

And if your son likes it, that's all that really matters

:edited for my horrible grammar

Thanks.

Yeah, Rex's head is fairly small and his tuckus is very ... formidable. The Sentinel legs with dreadnought leg covers helped add some length heft to the lower portion. In my opinion it is still a little light, but overall I'm satisfied.

Hi all,

Just a progress report for Rex.

This part is a bit of a departure from Toy Story Rex. I want the Blood Talons to be obviously Blood Talons and in order to do so I painted the "blood drops" or gems in Red. I know Toy Story Rex doesn't have any red but I thought red would be a good combination with green and black. I hope it doesn't stand out to much.

I remember reading a GW Masterclass article about balance and a triangle (eyes tend to be drawn to objects located in roughly a triangular manner) so I painted the eyes and sensor red as well. I hope it works, so far I am undecided.

Here are the steps for red:
step 18 - gwf mecharite red
step 19 - vgc red gore
step 20 - vgc blazing orange
step 21 - white
step 22 - gww baal red

Rex is almost done. Just have to matte varnish, gloss varnish the red parts, and base. Unless, of course, someone notices something that will make the model look better and I have time to make changes.

Thanks and take care

Thanks. I'm glad you noticed the paras. It's not the most complex of conversions, but it gets the point across.

I gathered all the component parts for the tactical squads, assault squad, Sheriff Woody, Buzz and Utility Belt Buzz.

I will start with Tactical Squad Ultra. The current army list only has eight marines in it. I made two extra marines (one special weapon, one heavy weapon). They wil also serve as test models for painting.

Bolters will be attached to marine arms similar to angelus pattern bolters from Sanguinary Guard. Dark Angel shoulder pads will be used on the left shoulder. Right Shoulder pads will match accompanying drop pod.

If anyone cares to share ideas about Space Ranger construction that would be fun.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Happy New Year.

A new year means time for new photos.

I started on their legs. I first cut a small piece of rod and attached it to legs. Next, I experimented with adding a very small piece of rectangular plastruct around the bottom of each leg. It took forever and looked horrible. I thought about green stuff-ing it, but my GS-fu is weak and I didn't want to spend that much time on legs.

Bolters were next. I cut off the grip, ammo clip, and barrel. The will be wrist mounted with a glob od green stuff to hold it in place. The ammo clip was moved to the side. Finally, I drilled out a spot were the barrel was located. I have some red translucent rod and will put a small piece in the hole to represent a laser. I know LEDs would be really cool, but the time involved would be to great.

Lastly, I have begun removing skull iconography. skulls just don't seem appropriate for this army

Thanks and take care

HI all,

I've taken a break from Tactical Squad Ultra to work on assault squad jump packs. Yep, that's right. It's time to fall ... with style.

The assault squad consists of four marines and a veteran sergeant. They will fly around in a Stormraven with a Sanguinary Priest (Utility Belt Buzz).

Started with chopping up a few backpacks in the same way as the tactical squads. I cut strips of sheet styrene 1 cm x 2.5 cm. Also, I made a couple of templates to match the bottom of the backpacks. After cutting out the basic shapes I added some half round pieces to round off the wing edges. Some cut down missiles from Cadian Heavy Weapons Sprue were added to complete the basic shape.

I used a Sanguinary Honor Guard jump pack for Utility Belt Buzz. It just called an extra cut the the template to account for the stabilizer ports.

There is still a fair amount of work remaining on the jump packs. I am thinking it may be easier to leave the packs off until after painting.

Thanks and take care

Huh? What?!? Holy hand grenades, you're right! It's a good thing these clips accept ammo facing in either direction
The bolters look really, really bad when ammo clips are facing the "correct" direction.

Thanks.
As my sons (three year-old and one year-old) get older I hope this army will assist in stimulating their interest in 40k and miniatures war gaming. At some point I may have to add Lightning McQueen, Mater, WALL-E, and Thomas
A recent exchange between my oldest and me:
Son: "Look, I'm a Picasso."
Me: "Ahhh, I don't get it."
Son: "You uncultured swine. Whadya lookin at ya hockey puck."

and a non Toy Story quote he dropped the other day: "There are no accidents."

HI all,

Wow! Looks like a few more people have checked in after this thread was posted on Dakka's main page. Welcome and have fun!

I've been back to work on Tactical Squad Ultra. Models are starting to get put together. Not a whole lot of progress to show.

I also put together my first drop pod. They go together fairly well. The squad insignia on the drop pod matches the right shoulder pad of the marines. I have left it in a few pieces in an effort to make it easier to paint.

Thanks and take care

Wellll, originally he was. However, on the advice of people whom had used Blood Angels, Woody was switched to a Sanguinary Priest. The horse just didn't fit with the rest of the army.

Buzz as Tycho does work very well

Ack! I had not thought about that. I'll have to think of something. Thanks for the heads up

The weather in Northern New Jersey has been a bit ... odd of late. It was warm enough to prime a couple models this past weekend. I am using the special and heavy weapons marines from tactical squad Ultra. They won't be used during most games because Buzz and Woody will be joining the squad in a drop pod.

The missile launcher marine is primed gray. The plan is to layer up to white. This process may take awhile to paint ... which leads to the plasma gun marine. The plasma gunner is primed white. The plan is to use Vallejo's pale wash and than highlight with white. I hope the pale wash looks good because that will save a lot of time. We'll see which one "wins"

Thanks and take care

I have one small suggestion, take it or leave it, but for Rex, have you considered doing something like this to him?

I think it would help get across his character a little bit more if you had painted on teeth like the fighter above. Would be pretty funny as well!

Just a thought! Keep up the great work.

I'm leaning that way too, but the gray base may have a more "cartoonie" look (like the army men).

gobbledog wrote:I want you to do the prospector. What was his name? Stinky Pete? A techmarine maybe?

Stinky Pete is a bad guy. I may just have to do a chaos army featuring all the bad guys of Pixar. Evil Emperor Zurg, Stinky Pete, Lotso Huggins Bear, Warp Darkmatter, Syndrome, Henry J Watermoose. Hmmm, this sounds like fun.

Thanks. I like where you're going with the teeth idea. I have to admit that I may not have the erm.... stones to try this. I like how Rex currently looks, but I've felt it was missing something. Where do you think the "mouth" should go?

Hi all,

Had some time to slap some paint on the test models.

I used Vallejo Pale wash over a white basecoat. The photos are difficult to see the gray, but they look okay. I may have to do some black-lining to make the model "pop". The gray wash is almost to subtle.

The gray base resembles the army men "cartoonie" look. I like the look for this army.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the models are finished.

Thanks and take care

Mr.Awesome1 wrote:Just my opinion but don't you think that Hamm the Airship should go in a villain army as Hamm is played out as a villain when Andy plays with his toys.

Shoosh! Don't tell anyone. Thematically, you are correct but I can't resist the idea of having a giant pink pig flying around the board.

M0rdain wrote:Mmm i agree, the pale wash over the white hardly shows the wash. But over the grey it is much more obvious and looks better.

Yeah, the photos aren't the best. I use a point and shoot camera that (for the most part) takes decent photos and my editing skills are weak (on a good day). As I think about it the white I used was very thin. If i use a thicker white I think it will look a tad better. I may even break out the white glaze

Time for a bit of color on the test models.
I was curious to try one of Reaper's triads. I picked up a blue-green triad containing Stormy Sea (shade), Clouded Sea (base), Seafoam Blue (highlight). They will be used on chest iconography, shoulder pad base, and eyes. I did manage to forget to paint the eyes. D'oh!

To make the transitions a bit smoother I went with an ink wash. I tried two different washes. First was a turquoise ink from Reaper and the second was a mix of my creation based on LBursleys wash/ink recipe (20 drops cyan blue, 40 drops paynes grey). Each shoulder pad set has one of each color. The turquoise made made the color a bit greener and the cyan grey made the color appear more blue.

Next up - purples!

Thanks and take care

Added some purple to the test models.

Not much purple on the hands so I only included a picture of basecoat. When painting the rest I think I will tone done the amount of pink highlights.

Currently, the gray base coat has taken the lead. I added some more layers of white paint to the gray base and it seems, to me, to make a big positive difference. Any thoughts?

I did forget Thanks for a heads-up.

I got a fair amount of painting done last night. The green parts are complete. It''s not an exact copy of a Space Ranger but it should be fairly clear what is going on.

I used Knarloc green on the gray based model and Orkhide Green on the white based test model. I prefer the Knarloc and the gray base is a now firmly in the lead.

Next up - shoulder pads get some black.

Nothing in the near future. I have other things to do first A Defiler for the Sons of Pus and Stic-krons.

I began taking notes while working on the Sons of Pus. If I ever go back to add units or such I'll know what steps were taken Also, it also helps to find parts that were missed.

I finished the test models!

Overall I'm satisfied with the results. The only thing I'm questioning are the shoulder pads. I may re-paint the shoulder pads and reverse the black and blue.

I did paint the wings but didn't take any photos You can see the results in the assembled photos.

I prefer the look of the gray base. I feel it matches the scouts and has a fun "cartoonie" look.

Looks like gray base was the preferred version.

Okay, the more I looked at the shoulder pads the more I became less than thrilled with the results. I reversed the colors. The iconography and trim are now blue and the base color is black. To me it just seems to work better.

I tried a paynes grey/cyan wash on the plasma gunner and a cyan wash on the missile launcher. The missile launcher came out a tad more blue and I will most likely use it in the future.

Thanks and take care

I want the trim to stand out more and that is why I tried the reverse scheme.

M0rdain wrote:I was looking at my sons shoes the other day, and noticed that Buzz is grey rather than white on them Grey is defiantly the way to go

If the sneaker fits, wear it!
To me, the gray looks much better. It will require more time, but it will be worth it.

On to Assault marines. I have a squad of five containing an inferno pistol dude and vet sarge with a fist. Also, a Sanguinary Priest with a jump pack and lightning claw (Utility Belt Buzz) will be joining them. They will eventually be flying around inside a Stormraven (Hamm).

The back packs are already done. I will attach the backpacks once they are painted.

Nothing very different from the tactical squad except i used bolt pistols and gave them chainswords. The swords really don't fit Space Ranger theme, but I don't want there to any confusion on what models they are representing.

For Utility Belt Buzz I used an Space Wolves head and just filed down the hair so it looks like Buzz's hood.

Thanks and take care,

What a bloody riot.

You definitely have your work cut out for you, but you seem to be enjoying it, and that's all that matters.

Query : Did you ever think about leaving off the shoulderpads? Buzz himself has those gangly looking arms jutting out of the massive center torso, it would have looked odd but certainly fitting for the character.

It is fun. The conversions are fairly minor and there is enough variation in painting to keep from getting to cumbersome.

Answer: I chose to use Toy Story as a basis for inspiration not to make an exact duplicate. I thought about keeping the shoulder pads, but it looked awful and I wasn't going to make a whole army like that. At the end I want people to see a Space Marine army based on Toy Story and not just a Toy Story army. I hope that answers your question.

Mr.Awesome1 wrote:These are brilliant minis!

Thanks! I am using clear bases. I have a few pictures of Andy's room that I will be using in a display base. I haven't used clear bases before so if it doesn't work out game play wise or if the bases becomed scuffed than I will do something else. What that something else is I don't know

On to new stuff. I built the Stormraven. It was the first one I built and it went together fairly well. I will say ther will be no rush to make a second

No conversions or anything special ... this time

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

I had some time to start painting Hamm!

I missed photos of the first three steps

Step 1 - Gray Primer
Step 2 - Master Series Paint Entraill Pink
Step 3 - 1/2 msp Entrail pink, 1/2 vgc Squid Pink

I think it will take awhile to paint Hamm and its times like this I wish I had an airbrush

Thanks and take care

Good stormraven, that is certainly a new look for that vehicle.

I'm going to take a flying leap with this one and guess that any assault marines you make are going to have wings so they can "fly" just like buzz light year?

Edit sorry just looked back and saw you had already done that. Doh

Too infinity and bejoooonnnnddddd...... As i fall in to a chasm of despair.

Thanks! This wasn't as difficult as a first generation land raider crusader, but it was a wee bit trickier than a Valkyrie. The main body was difficult to line up properly.

Okay, so I've had some time to look at it. And I did not liking what I saw. It is too red, much to red.

I went back to my reference picture and started over. I had some "rose" colors from a previous project a few years ago and fortunately the paints were still good (way to go, Vallejo).

I reapplied a coat of MSP Entrail Pink and built up from there.

I think this looks much better and is a closer match to Hamm.

Next up - Highlighting black!

Thanks and take care

On a typical night the boys are in bed by 8:30 - 8:45 and by 9:00 I've moved my paint station into the living room to paint/model while the wife and I have a college basketball game on TV. Lately, my three-year old son seems to always have to go potty about 9:15. He'll do his thing and than stop by to ask about "my armies"
It will be a couple before he is ready to try his hand at painting a toy soldier.
It wasn't much of a stretch to make Hamm a Stormraven. The lads at Pixar did the work already (Evil Dr. Porkchop's Airship).

I worked on the lascannons and glass.

I used Reaper's line of silver metallics. After using them I think I will stick with Vallejo. Reaper just didn't seem to cover as well. Reaper Polished silver works very well as a highlight for Vellejo's silver line.

The cupola has served as a test model of sorts. The glass took a couple of efforts before finding something acceptable

Thanks and take care

Thanks. I like where you are going. I see Zurg as a Demon Prince so the DA vet may be a bit small. But than again it may pretty sweet to have a giant head on the tiny body.

I started with the entrail pink parts of the main body. After painting the first layer I started thinking I would probably wear off some paint handling the model while trying to paint the black and metallic parts so why not paint those first and see what happens

Thanks and take care

Thanks. Extreme highlights are fun to paint and you do not sound a like a total nutcase ... maybe a partial nutcase

I worked on iconography and lights. Same style as the shoulder pads.

The base coat of pink has been wearing off in spots so I'm glad I waited to paint the other layers.

Not much else to report.

It looks like there will have to several touch-ups due to paint rubbing off during handling. I will definitely matte varnish this beast.

It's still going to be awhile Between two young kids, work, and having to paint our living room toy soldier painting is down to about three nights a week for the past two weeks (and probably a couple more).

Here is the reference pic I've been using.

I tend to use white as a final highlight to represent bright light washing out whatever color is there.

Hi all,

When I started playing 40k (many years ago) I always used dice that matched my army. About three years ago that changed when I purchased some 14mm, red, translucent, precision dice. All I know is I seemed to roll as many ones and twos as before except now they were precise ones and twos

I have decided to go back to using dice which match my army (its just more fun). Fellow Dakkaites, based on the models shown in this plog does anyone have suggestions on what dice to get? I do have a couple of rules.
1. 12mm only. I have used 12mm and 16mm in the past and I prefer 12mm.
2. No transparent dice. I am not a fan of transparent dice. I cannot read the darn tootin' things.

Hamm is coming along slowly, but work is being done. Photos of the left wing follow.

Thanks and take care

Thanks and yes, yes it is

HAMM. IS. FINISHED.

Egads! I thought it would never end. The multi-melta, black lining of icons, and ruby inking (between armor plates) went quickly.

I matte sealed using Army Painter. I had been using testors but after using AP's spray primer I thought I would give it a shot. I really like this stuff. It doesn't seem to fade highlights like other matte varnishes I've used.

The only item remaining is the base. I'm using clear bases for the army and I don't have one for Hamm. Does anyone know where I can get a clear, valkyrie sized base? I looked at Litko, but it is expensive (though in fairness I don't have anything to compare it to). It could be resin or acrylic.

Next up - back to tactical squad Ultra. I see GW is introducing a basecoat white. Hopefully, it cover better than other companies I've tried. I know it is not easy to cover something with white but there has to be something easier than what I've been doing.

Thanks and take care

1. Thank you!
3. Yeah, I have had my fill of pink for awhile and am ready to get back to something a tad more ... normal.
2. I wasn't surprised. I think I have a few reasons.
- The last several updates have been essentially the same and if you seen one part of a pink pig you've seen them all.
- It's a natural cycle of people reading the forums and not reading.
- People can only post so many "atta"-boys.
- Reciprocity. When people take the time to post something in a thread of mine I will, at the least, look to see if they are maintaining a P&M blog. I don't always leave a comment (for various reasons), but of late I haven't been keeping up my end of the exchange (once again for various reasons). Everyone starting a blog likes to be recognized even if it is "atta"-boys

HI all,

Just a small update.

I started painting tactical squad Ultra. I put down a few layers of paint on the Veteran Sargent.

The gray layer was fine, but the white was more challenging than I thought it would be. I picked up GW's new base white, but haven't used it because of another project.

It can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/441831.page
I need a small break from Space Rangers and I figure this diversion will take about three or four months to finish. Probably just in time to find sixth edition totally nerfs the army

I plan to paint the knights in a manner very close to Hamm
I also want to try a couple techniques before using them on Buzz.

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Okay, it's been over two years but I'm ready to get back to this project. The main reason for the delay was my inability to find a way to paint white quickly, yet still look good. The test model below took about three hours to get its current state.

The paint is thick and splotchy. So what it lacks in quality it makes up for in taking forever to make it look so bad.

So finally being fed up with the project I needed to move onto something else - finishing a Tau army http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/480933.page than some GK Paladins http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/511844.page. than http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/557548.page
What can I say, I have a touch of the gamer's ADD.

About four months ago I purchased a air brush and such. One of the reasons was because I thought it would essential to complete the Buzz Lightyear army. I didn't want to start with marines so I broke out some old Warzone plastic models that have been sitting in stasis. I figure this will give a chance to practice with the air brush and hopefully get closer to finishing this project. The plan is to use the test models as Militarum Tempestus.

I've watched hours of videos on how to use an airbrush. One technique regularly featured is pre-shading. Pre-shading involves using black paint in recesses and bottom and using lighter shades if gray from a level position and white from above (spraying on top of model). This looked like a very good place to start. So I mounted the pieces on paint sticks and sprayed away.

Bodies and bases

Hot-shot lasguns

Heads

This looks like a better place to begin.

For the first model I used a Concrete wash to cover it entirely . Ugh. To dark. I spent a bit of time building up white. So far this isn't going to work.

Next one I used Pale wash from Vallejo. This worked out much better. If a spot needs to be darker I can add more Pale wash or a spot of concrete wash. It was much easier to build up layers of white (VMA White).

Test model #3 shows a bit cleaner progress. I used pre-shading for green and purple and used a couple layers of Reaper MSP clear for each color. The bluish colors are Reaper MSP Ocean blue triad. Reds are MSP Fire Red triad. The white diamond is from a IG Cadian decal set.

The base is sheet styrene with cork underneath. A variety of paints and washes were used. I scratched it give a more weathered / rough look. Not exactly what I had in mind but it works well enough for me.

After coating the model with Vallejo satin varnish it was attached to the base and a mix of pigments were used to add a bit of texture and break up the grayness of the base.

I will be adding some static grass and leaf liter for a bit of character and to offset the brightness of the white.

Test model #4 is very similar to #3. #4 had a bit more pre-shading gray visible with than #3.

Based

Overall I'm very pleased with the test models. The plan is to have a command squad with Hot-shot volley guns, one unit of ten with two meltaguns, one unit of ten with two plasma guns, and one unit of ten with two flamers (though this one is iffy).

One question, does anyone have an idea regarding the shoulder pad diamonds? I want to have all the right shoulders look the same and left shoulders used to differentiate squads. Use different colors, or use a dot or shape inside the diamond, etc??

Thanks and take care

Two years?! Time flies! Great to see you and this project back in business.

As for the squad markings, I would go with the dot/shape inside the diamond.

Insane project, but a ton of fun, and well done.

Yep, two years. I've been busy but just on other projects
Now it's time to put a serious dent in this. My sons are getting older and I want this to be their first army.

I'm thinking "ZR" on left shoulder (Zurtron Rangers) and a colored square/circle on the right.

Thanks!

Getting some work done and making a few adjustments. Photos to follow in a couple of days.

Hi all,

Getting a bit closer to a finalized version!

In the last post I mentioned putting a "ZR" in the diamond on the left shoulder. Yeah, that didn't go so well. First attempt at painting a "ZR" started bad and became worse. Between the small lettering and my inability to focus on something so small (curse you father time) nothing looked acceptable.

Having a "Z" and "R" isn't going to work. It makes it to small. Looks like "Z" will stand alone.

The second attempt involved using decals/transfers. One problem, where to find a bunch of "Z". I have many, many transfer sheets that have been collected throughout the years and I figured there had to be something useful.

I searched and searched until a winner was found.
There are five usable "Z" on this sheet.

Take a closer look
Here are two.

Here are three.

Did you find them?
For those you haven't. I used "N" and rotated it. Pretty sneaky, amiright?

Here is the almost finished product.

The "Z" fits nicely. I will add a bit of gray to the edges to provide a little highlighting.
Also, a few bits of leaf litter (for color) and some static grass were added from the previous version.

The right shoulder insignia comes from a Gorkamorka transfer.

I still need to add a wee bit of gray to the square.

The gun barrel needs to be weathered a bit with SWM metallic iron pigment.

Overall, I like how this is progressing. The white looks a bit worn and weathered which I prefer to the New-In-Box which was originally intended. Thanks goodness for happy accidents.

If anyone has any thoughts, ideas, critiques please feel free to post.

Thanks and take care

Nice use of those obscure transfers. They fit perfectly.

Thanks. Just a wee bit of blind luck finding them and working well together.

Test models are complete!

I added a bit more color spots to the hot-shot lasgun and sides of backpack.

Test Model A-

Test Model B -

Closer view of water effect. I may add another layer of Secret Weapons Miniature's Realistic Water. I added some Tamiya Clear Yellow and some splotches of SWM Cotton Candy Wash.

Test Model C -

Okay, so a plan is in place. Time to finish about twenty more just like them

Thanks and take care

Hi all,

Just finished two meltagunners and a veteran sergeant which means test squad is complete.

Veteran Sergeant

Meltagunners
a fairly basic conversion. Thank goodness for plastic meltsguns

Squad

There are a couple of test models which will be painted to the other models in the unit. Fortunately, because of the MechaniCon's point level I only need five of the ten.

Work has begun on the next unit of MT (plasma guns) and a MT command squad with four hot-shot volley guns are in the works.

Thanks and take care
