Calling all dakkainens I made this blog so I can show you my whole collection of warhammer 40k, and to keep me enthusiastic about painting and modelling.(This is because I often get board of painting when I have the patience) and I would like to finish my armies whilst getting your feedback. Please make sure to post a reply and please tell others of my blog. I really do appreciate it when you do!
This blog is a labour of love and I do intend to update asap (everyday if I could ) but I have a busy life so updates will mostly be during the holiday breaks. You may notice that in terminator squad 2 there is one man missing that is because I can't find him (he has lighting claws). My librarian has blue bits between his arms this is because its blue tack and I have not finished painting him yet! I am currently in the process of production line painting, with the remainder of the tactical squads not currently shown there are 4 in total.
edits: you may notice that there is a large number of edits below, this is because of large amounts of title changes.
Background Fluff
I don’t want to wirte a whole history on the ulras and my goffs because its just too long! But here is a brief overview on both races (Below) and here’s are more accurate and detailed history for the Ultramarines and Ork Goffs.
The Ultramarines currently own a whole system called Ultramar which no other chapter has. There home world is called Macragge. They have 10 companies with the 1st being the veterans and the 10th being the scouts (basically new recruits). They strictly follow the Codex Astartes which Roboute Guilliman wrote as “guide lines” for every space marine. Companies 2-5 are battle companies then companies 6-9 are reserve, If a company needs additional troops the reserve companies squads will assigned to a certain company. (The 1st company rarely fights as one whole company and is assigned the most to other companies or is in charge of Macragge when Marneus Calgar isent on Macragge).
The ultramarines were one of the first chapters of the space marines and which was numbered the eighth (XIII) legion out of the original twenty. The Ultramarines also took part in the Horus Heresy but before the siege for Terra Roboute Guilliman was tricked by Horus believing that there was an ork Waaaagh mustering in the veridan system. Hearing this Roboute leaved For Ultramar where he would muster a force to destroy this Waaaagh however they were attacked by the World Bearers who the Ultramarines defeated. After the Horus Heresy the Ultramarines Legion was at full strength and had around 250,000 in total in the Legion. This is why there are over 20 successor chapters for the second founding.
Ork Goffs are one of the largest clans and love to ware chequered white and black on arms and shoulder pads. Ghazghkull thraka is a goff too and leads one of the largest current Ork Waaaaagh’s.

Hey Hazzer. Nice to see you've started a blog. That's quite the horde of Ultra smurfs you have there. The first thing i would recommend is you give basing a proper go. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=1100020&pIndex=2&aId=9800023a&multiPageMode=true&start=3 This article is very good as a start. I think some of the models could do with a neaten up but i notice from your Wip tactical squads that you're definitely improving. One final note, though i am very forgiving of poor spelling and could make out what you were saying with minimal effort, i do think maybe you should write your longer posts out in Microsoft word first. This should help with most of the Spelling mistakes. Simply copy and paste it when you're done. (It's what i do for my fiction lol). Remember alot of Dakka Users do not speak English as a first language so it is important that we try and write as clearly as possible.

Lots of dedication, The dreadnought had really nice paint on it. The leg armour in particular. The scouts look a bit flat (won't matter much on the tabletop) but the backside of them is very cool. What did you use for the ghillie suits by the way?

That is a lot of peices. It looks like you hurried through a lot of them. When you are saving up to buy your next peice, you may want to go back and do some touch up work. But overall this looks like a really good start. Nice job.

Hi,
Here are some pictures of my ruined church Note: it’s still only the start of this and I am going to be adding low down ruined corner to fill in a gap and adding a pillar stump. These may be made out of foam board. I am also thinking of adding some long benches like from a medieval church and a ruined aquiler eagle on the far side to sympathise a crucifix that would be in a medieval church...Tactical squad update soon.

Its nice ta see your tread up and running HAZZER.
Love the work ya did on your rhino. My only advice on that would be to thin down your lighter colors and do more coats.
Your boyz are lookin ok but its hard to tell from the blurry pics how well the detail is done. Some new pics would be great. For the most part a solid start. I cant wait to see how your armies grow from here.

So first off, props to you for painting your models. I know far too many people who play with bare plastic and it is sad. Secondly I have a few tips, which hopefully, will help you improve your quality over time.
First is don't use black primer. When you get more paint experience under your belt go for it, but black primer destroys models if you don't know how to paint over it. Everything looks muddy.
Second thin down your paint with water. Not a ton, just enough so that it doesn't blob onto your brush and remains smooth. Here is a way to test it. Put paint on your palette and turn your palette at a 45 degree angle over some paper towels. If the paint doesn't move its too thick, if it flies off the palette like quicksilver its too thin, you want it to roll down slow and steady.
Next apply two coats of a color before you move to the next layer. Spread the paint evenly, don't blob it on. Basically dip your brush in the paint and spread that paint around until it can't spread no more, then dip again, continue until the area is done.
Next practice brush control on some paper. Watch how the bristles move when you apply different amounts of pressure. get used to anticipating this "spreading" so you can paint edges clean. Basically if you were going to paint an edge where two different colors touch you would put the brush on the model about a mm away from the seam. Then when you push the brush onto the surface the bristles will spread out and cover the remaining mm up to the edge of the other color. Most edge bleeding comes from when someone puts the brush on the edge and doesn't anticipate the brush spreading.
Next let your paint dry. The muddy look you see on various models comes from when you apply wet paint onto wet paint. This mixes the two together in a messy way. You then contaminate your brush and dip it back into your palette which alters the color you are using and causes color swirls in your paint.
This last part is more personal preference than anything. I find that painting the darkest stage of a color first and then building up the highlights is the cleanest way to paint. So if you were going to paint red you would paint the surface a dark red first, then once it dries you would paint a bright red, and lastly you would paint an orange/red to the edges for the highlights. This helps your highlights stay bright.
I hope this helps, you seem to have a lot of enthusiasm and that is half the fight when it comes to miniature painting.

Will try thinning my paint, and the tip of going from dark to light I do try to do on my mins most of the time. Any advice on colours I could use for blending up dark to light with blue? Hi,
another small update of the rouge trader and ork boyz minitures. Something ive found out is the catchan (I think it is?) is a male and not a female.  Enjoy;
@AcrylicAlchemist- tryed out the thining out the paint and going over in about two to three coats, I think for now on I will use white spray for ultramarines and something different to black for orks.
@schank23-hope these pictures are better!will try to go over the lighting on the rhino but did don it that way so it would br blende in.

I was originally going to have it left silver however after looking on GW website the gun is green, so may do the end part green or the middle. Not really sure. Yes this is just a side diversion to try out painting green, cloth and I want to try out glazing for the sword and plasma. I am also wanting to try out reflective light too, (if its manageable) and maybe have a go at a fancy base, hey you never know I could always enter this at my local GW and LFGS painting compation and win a blister or finecast blister too!
But still need to finish off the amour stuck on a last highlight maybe rotting flesh which I believe is a cross between bleached bone and catchan green or something like that. Or I will mix a colour and blend it up from the knock green highlight. Not happy with the face so far, may scrape the paint away and starts again...don’t know. Need to get another light blue because my enchanted blue has dried up will get either-enchanted blue again, hawk turquoise or Ice blue. Or same again with the rotting flesh could mix a colour up...Wait a minute just realised something that is there is a small amount of the pigment left in the enchanted blue pot. Could get that out mix it up with water and use it as like a glaze. Hey it’s what I did with knorlck green...

Good work man, improving on every post! A recomendation for painting the orks, give them a base of orkhide shade before doing the orky green, its a solid foundation for the other greens. Don't use as much paint either, it makes it a bit easier too!
Now you asked about lighting and its a bit of a pain. I start with necron abyss or mordian blue for the base. Dry brush a very small amount of ice blue in the center of the coils and then a small amount of light grey and white in the middle. A shrinking color set of sorts.
Lighting, Its hard to get that effect, its not about quantity its about edges, Sharp edges and thin amounts of the brightest blue you have, ice is what I use. With lighting, you need to be realistic, plasma pistols and energy weapons don't generation a whole lot of glow unless their big, so do a little planning and look around a bit at other lighting, I have only been painting for 8 months and lighting is what I'm at now, so more to do for me.
Nice work though, keep it up and try new stuff.

Hey, Hazzer. Sorry it has taken me so long to get over here. I really like your paint, dude. I think you got some skills there. I myself haven't ever painted anything, so nothing but kudos on it from me.
I think that your paint is worth better photos though. I am not that good at it personally but I am trying with this blog:

Anyway, thanks for inviting me over. You have some really good work here.

Hey HAZZER, you just picked up another reader. Checked it out through your pleas for attention on the Intro board (I was doing the same thing for my Plague Marines and Cultist blogs ) so decided to check yours out and wow I really like your Orks a lot. Perfect dirty gritty scheme and earthy colors. Very well done.
On the down side, your photography is frequently quite horrible.
If you're up for some advise, take multiple pictures of the same models w/ different exposures / lens / etc and find what works for you, and also if you have multiple pics you can choose the best ones of the batch to post here.
I'll be back, subbed!

Soz man I bought these from a train hobby store, which I passed while going up North to family. However, you should be able to get these from any train model shop. My local hobby store's sells plastruct but no V-beams. Or I would look online. Hazzer you have a pretty awesome thread going on here. I have say your painting skills are really starting to develop. It is not uncommon for gamers to never paint their minis so kudos for taking on this task.
My favorite model is your sniper in the Gilly suit.
If your looking for advice the only advice I can give is thin your paints with a wet pallet and get comfortable with washes and inks. I will be checking in from time to time. Keep up the great work!

Yup, those look really good. What I meant was large scrolls would have cracks and rips in and there would also be bent and rolled edges. HAZZER
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Yeah, I see what you mean. I am toying with the idea of a hot water dip with strips of .020 styrene. I can go back and add rips and tears in the edges afterward but I think that it would lend that sort of uneven folding of thick paper or heavy cloth that the scrolls have. I have also considered simply using a thin cloth soaked in , like, elmers glue for shaping, and then painted. I am not quite ready to devote time to that part but I have thought about it.

It isn't all I make. But it is what I make most often. I am in the process of getting some GW models so that I can mass scratch a huge Chaos Iron Warriors Army. Predators, Vindicators, Land Raiders, Rhinos (which are incredibly cheap to make) and Titans, Lots of titans. Is it possible to scratch Obliterators? I tried Defilers but failed miserably. i will have to try again soon. I am even thinking about building a Harbinger.........

that Harbinger is a bomber type of flyer?
and yep... some of the SM really scream for scratchbuilding... really the built is so boxy... i am highly troubled that anybody at all wants to buy them from GW^^

I have seen monkeytrolls work. You are correct, sir, he is amazing. I don't think I would even know where to start converting an actual production model. I sometimes think I have no idea what I am doing with the scratch builds and to be honest it is almost like I could do anything I wanted and they would still be at least ok. I love that kind of freedom and don't think I will ever convert or modify an actual GW or FW mini. Speaking, however, of derailing, I haven't seen anything new in this thread in two pages, Hazzer. Hi Hazzer! So came over and had a look at your Blog! Glad to see it is motivating you as I too get motivated to put stuff up for my Blog. Couple of bits of constructive criticism, first try and be a bit neater with your initial painting, I know easy to say harder to do but it really is all down to practice and patience. Secondly when you are taking photos to upload take a bit more time on taking the shots, make sure they are in focus and preferably on a clean back ground, I just use a sheet of white paper. there is a guide on how to take better photos on Dakka in the tutorials section worth a look. congrats on the number of views & keep up the good work!

I've been trying to improve on my paintig and im trying to be a tad neater, thanks anyway for the constructive criticism really apreceate it (And need it lol!). i've looked at thatguide for pic tacking too it really hepled me and yes I will try to get better pics. You've got some lovely pics on here mate, on the first page I was going to originally say I wanted clearer pics of Marneus and co, but good to see you got some nicer one I like the cape work on the terminator Marneus model and the ghille-esque approach to the scouts was very smart indeed
Great work

Thanks man apriceate it! The cape took for ages on the inside where I did the cape a cloth like color blendind bleached bone to skull white, while the outside was rather easy. The snipers were just a bit of fun that went really well.

Hi guys,
I've just had "a light bulb" moment: idea: with the picture problem and well I’ve used my IPod to quickly take some pics.  Sorry for bad quality I am currently in a rush but I will try to get some better pics in daylight on my workstation. Anyway here are the pictures but the rust and other bits still need to be painted about 75% done enjoy C&C welcome  ;

Dude that SUCKS! You should sue your parents for being so inconsiderate. They couldn't have waited until April to mess around? Noooo, had to be March...
And as far as age, I'm 44 and holding fast at 14-21ish. I listen to Metal, play guitar, drink beer on the weekends, paint / model / play wargames, play video games (or rather, used to before I traded that time for painting), love watching cartoons, play M: TG, and other things on the same line of thought.
The plumbing still works, the ticker hasn't skipped a beat, and I expect to be doing the same stuff I'm doing right now for the rest of my life, be it the end of this post or 40 years from now.
@ HAZZER- If you have your light source at your back shining towards your miniatures (instead of behind or beside) your photos will look a LOT better. The problem isn't your iPhone, it's how you're taking the picture. I've taken excellent pics w/ my wife's iPhone and iPad.

Arakasi checking in. I think I first viewed this early on and there wasn't enough Orks to hold my attention, but that seems to have been rectified, so here I am
1. Need more progress updates! It seems to have been a bit sparse over the last couple of pages...
2. You really need to work on those photos, it's definitely making commenting more difficult.
I like where that Ork bike was headed earlier - any updates to that? (or due soon?)
Your multicultural (multi-fungal?) Orks *do* look very cool.

The pics are improving, just move them back onto an all white background as they are difficult to see on your cutting matt.

Post by: mekbadzappa
I think the rust is overkill, it should be more minimal and multiple layers of orange and browns, not just dark flesh. Use scorched base, dry brush dark flesh, dry brush orange then a thin and I mean think wash of develan mud after that. Then another thin drybrush layer of orange with another thin wash of orange or vermin brown.

Hey, Hazzer, those orks are coming along rather nicely. I just wanted to toss in my two cents about your rust effect. Earlier someone (sorry I don't remember who) mentioned that you should add some orange to the scorched brown to work up layers for your rust. I thought I would provide a visual reference for you. This is an old WIP pic of a nurgle marine I did using that same rust effect. You can see where the layers are built up from brown to a brown/orange mix to almost a pure blazing orange. With some chainmail dotted in for added detail.
Feel free to take as much or as little from my advice as you please. I just thought the visual ref may help you out. It's not a hard technique to achieve you just need a small brush and a little patience.
Keep on going! Your minis (and pics) are looking better and better.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
That does, in fact, look very good Moltar. I actually know nothing about painting but I think that your rust is better suited for the Orks, Hazzer. More of a "scrap metal found in junk pile" look versus the "10,000 year old been in use just not taken care of look".
Just from my experience working (for 22 years now) around tanks and large metal objects that see a lot of outdoor use, is that a certain amount of corrosion will occur that is dealt with, removed and prevented and a certain amount that is accepted and just cleaned off every now and then.
A fine patina of age, such as is expertly done on Moltar's Nurgle Marine, may not be found on Ork armour. A) Orks would make their armour out of anything and B) paint would be rare, if at all. Mass produced equipment, even 10,000 years old, would still have a machined and treated appearance that would change not only the type but severity of corrosion that would be found on it.
Your stuff is gold, Haz, keep it up. Please find a way to get bright clearer shots up close, though. They are getting better but I really want to get there and see the finer details. And you should go get some mini's that you don't care about so you can do a paint tut.

For orks I use mitral silver for highlights and chainmail for SMs.I may need to to a tutorial when I have mastered the rust effect! (Oh im going to need spare time too). mxwllmdr wrote:That does, in fact, look very good Moltar. Definitely get a pin vice, I have about eight, they are really useful primarily for drilling barrels but also for adding rivets and pinning models. I also sometimes drill into a model and paint it on the pin vice. Like this;

I remember reading in an Old White Dwarf about the Ork fluff, how they are fungal life forms, and technically, they would have green blood or chlorophyl or something like that, but the design studio liked the contrast of red blood on green skin better for aesthetic reasons, so that is how they came to have the red eyes. Then in other fluff I've read, some of the feral orks are even brown-skinned, so I guess anything goes really. Maybe a different colored wash around the eye sockets to make the yellow pop a little? I dunno. Personally, I like my Orks green.

Are you going for a glowing yellow effect with the eyes? If you are a thin black line (a bit like eye liner) around the orb will give them more definition and the yellow on the cheeks will give the glow effect.

Just keep tweaking your photography skills man! Work out the nuances of your digital macro setting. It's a learning process all on it's own.
The nice thing is that you can learn quickly, since you have to take so many WIP pics for a blog!

Very interesting article HAZ. Like the dirt on your rhino way back in the beginning of this blog. Very envious of your Christmas stuff and high-tech workspace! Orks seem a bit dark-skinned, but that will really help distinguish them on the tabletop. Keep it up!

Thanks Aeroroot for stopig by! Thanks man! I used this weathering stick from tamia which works really well! Oh yes the x-mas stuff I was (and still am) rather pleased with it! Bearing in mind that its limited edition that’s even better! (I don't own many limited edition bits only the WD sub guys from 2010 and 2011 I need to buy the 2012 one soon! The rouge trader guy's from a antique shop that I picked up for 2 for a £1! I And I guess the metal guys too.) I decide to do different types of skin tones because I feel it makes the mob feel 'a bit more unique'.

Heya Hazzer, thanks for stopping by on my plog, i thought i would return the favour. I am not really compus mentis atm as its 1:40 am and i worked until after midnight lol, so i hope my spelling is alright .
Your photograpghy skills are coming along nicely, Try making your self a light box, this is something i need to do, i am sure there is an article on here about it some where.
A pin vice is a great addition to your kit, i got one from the local hard ware store for like £2.99 compared to the GW one which is £8.20. It makes pinning and drilling barrels much easier than using the drill bit between your fingers lol.

Hey thanks man for stopping by! Your spelling is fine btw! I'm considering purchasing a drill from online or somewhere soon. If you can see the amount of paint and tools that I have you'd be admased! (I may put a upatde showing it off). I belive that you can get a cheepo light box for about 9 quid which would be fine for what I need it for!
