I recommend for this technique to use black wash and white highlights to get different brightness levels on the minis so that when you come to apply colour half the work is done for you, like so:
Here is the latest random paint - this model has been highlighted using drybrush and wet blending with a beige colour and some white. I was trying to create a directional light effect from one side of the mini.
She will have purple dreads I think - and a green power blade. And lots of washes.
Its one of the jakara spyrers from the necromunda.
Its a really beautiful mini - very pretty and high-tech futuristic - And as usual for citadel minis the sword looks proportionately huge even though its meant to be an elegant monomolecular blade. But I like that I suppose.
Here is makari (?) the gretchin sidekick of gazukull thraka (who is in the stripping fluid right now). I didn't paint this - all records of this stage in my painting skill have been conveniently wiped from record. A shame really because its always fun to look back.
Also here is my latest attempt to finish a mini. The sword is pretty much done so now I will try and decide what colour purple to do the hair - and maybe her skin will be darker but I'm not sure.
Sorry weety... busy weekend here in the 'States (father's day). She's looking really good. Exceptional job on the face detail and the over-all use of color is very effective.
Fathers day huh? Damn its probably too late to get a card - dad had his birthday last weekend anyway so I guess he won't be bothered - I got him single malt whiskey - the gift that is good with ice.
happy fathers day!

I can never keep up with tyranid types - there are so many ugly looking critters that I gave up after termagants (did you know that the word termagant means a bully or a shrewish argumentative woman? and a lictor was a roman official's bodyguard?)

Yup, particularly fitting names imo... seems a shame that tyranid warriors are named just that... seems a little bland in comparison tbh. Btw, Dominatrix go back to roughly 3rd ed iirc, looks like a xenomophic giraffe with a space jockey strapped to its back... odd just doesnt cover it tbh
We could probably make a whole thread about what miniatures would best represent our X's.... Might be shut down by the MOD Squad, but it might also be theraputic.
Is there a mini called the Triple Breasted Whore of Eroticon Six? (a cookie for the first person to get the reference!)
RSJake wrote: Is there a mini called the Triple Breasted Whore of Eroticon Six? (a cookie for the first person to get the reference!)
Please... at least make it a tough one to get... Total Recall although now I'm having to figure out which book was written first, TR or HHGTTG lol...
dsteingass wrote:THose are the names that Imperials have cataloged the species' as really, not what the bugs cal lthemselves
Actually the Imperials catalogue them with Latin names for e.g. Gauntii Virago = Hormagaunt, Tyranicus Praefactor = Hive Tyrant. The "normal" names, are ones given to them by the grunts of the imperial forces aka guard but even then, their names are vaired
Tough call on the first appearance. THHGTTG came after the boook that Total Recall was based on, but before the movie, but in Total recall, I don't think she was from Eroticon Six.
And I never read the book, so I don't even know if she appeared in the book.
AnUnearthlyChilde wrote:Btw, Dominatrix go back to roughly 3rd ed iirc, looks like a xenomophic giraffe with a space jockey strapped to its back... odd just doesnt cover it tbh
The Dominatrix was originally a model released for the Tyranids in Epic, during the Space Marine/Titan Legions era. They had their own boxed set, and everything.

ok so I was out by one edition lols

I was going to say "your mum" but thats just harsh beyond words D
Great stuff dudes. It must be fun to design games - but continually coming up with names (all those chapters of SM for a start) must be taxing and we can't blame them for dipping into big dictionary and just picking an obscure word that sounds right now and again. Or even all the time.
I'm curious now so I'm going to go look up more random wh40k names.
Those are restaurants for tourists. I'm not throwing stones though. Any time I use my lovely lady's iPad, it autocorrects all my gaming terms into odd and irritating words (and occasional non-words).
But more importantly - which restaurants inspired warhammer names? I'm intrigued (I used my spell check that time, I could never spell intrigued without it)
That's a restaurant used by people, like me, who post in a hurry and don't go back to check typos.
I'll try and dig the old stuff up for you, Weety. Meanwhile, go enjoy some early "Bolt Thrower" while painting your RTT era miniatures, for the FULL early 40K experience.
So let me get this straight Briancj - you meant stories, something that sounds like restaurants and literary sources. I cant guess what that's auto-corrected from - I hate auto-correct but it can come up with some funny ones.
haven't heard from Ambull since ages ago - I think GWs lawyers had him kidnapped and taken to Guantanamo.
I feel young now as I have never heard of this Bolt thrower thing - I will google it immediately!
That Spyrer dude has really big hands. Did he get any in-game ability from them? Because the disadvantages must be many. Just imagine his challenges when trying to fish in his pockets for a couple of quid for a coffee or his dilemma when he has to scurry to the loo...
Open zipper...nope
Open belt and pants snap...nope
Rip pants off with powerfists and just pee freely...yep!
for some reason I thought bolt thrower would be like a magazine or something - Grindcore! For years I was into heavy metal but I never really fit in with the metal-heads because I keep turning the music down and complaining that I can't hear the lyrics. We had a lotta great home grown acts down here who we used to get wrecked with - Bogfiller, Headwound, Mentaporta, all bands you've never heard of but in the best tradition of angry loud music.
I feel gross to say this JB but he probably wears incontinence pants or a catheter. Yeah probably a catheter leading to a recyc-unit which purifies the water out and drips into his mouth to keep him hydrated on long hunts.
IIRC, they were power fists with built in bolt launchers.
Hang on, I saw my copy of Necromunda 1st ed not too long ago...
Ah yes, it was hiding behind some old Legend of the Five Rings RPG books I've not read yet.
The Orrus started with two "crushing fists", each of which had an Orrus Bolt Launcher attached. The bolt launcher started off as a 16" range boltgun, which made two wound rolls if you it with it. The suit/fists seemed to give +1S & +1A, and while none of his power boosts directly improved them, he did have the highest max S on his profile. He could also end up with a 2+/2++ save, in theory.
Oh what was that band called? 'Bugga' thats it - they would all dress in pink Tu-tus and play a song called "don't be nasty, have a pasty". But they were more post-punk than metal. I just felt like sharing that memory though.
weetyskemian44 wrote:Oh what was that band called? 'Bugga' thats it - they would all dress in pink Tu-tus and play a song called "don't be nasty, have a pasty". But they were more post-punk than metal. I just felt like sharing that memory though.
"don't be nasty, have a pasty" aye... sounds like punk/post-punk to me... oh dear, the days of yore...

Lol. Its recyc dude, its been cleaned. Probably cleaner than any water he will find in the underhive anyhow. Or maybe he is being a snob: "I can'r bear to drink this filthy commoner water I would rather suck on my own catheter" kinda thing!
anunearthlychilde - thats a tall order - What about the death ferret? If you're having a gyrinx you should have a death ferret too. I only know that if you get lucky and find them on ebay you will be looking at a steep price. Hope you find them! I have given up personally.
Dysartes you are the voice of authority today (and sanity probably). The orrus stats make him a great distraction - he can just stand in the open charging forward and absorbing bullets while everyone else sneaks in round the edges.
Never lose hope Weety, the amount of things I've found recently lurking on eBay listed as something it wasnt and allowing me massive bargains has been ridiculous lols.
That Gyrinx will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine... (cookie for the altered reference there)
yes - if you trawl through enough crud you can often find rare stuff - Bulk listings from people who say in their write up - "I have no idea what this stuff is" are the best.
weetyskemian44 wrote:Dysartes you are the voice of authority today (and sanity probably). The orrus stats make him a great distraction - he can just stand in the open charging forward and absorbing bullets while everyone else sneaks in round the edges.
If I'm the voice of sanity, we have problems. Mind you, the hardback Necromunda/Outlanders combibook is a good resource to have available.
@AnUnearthlychilde: We're not worthy! We're not worthy!
Battles has event cards in the back that are actually real good and GW used to sell the event cards but I am the only person know off that bought them.
I already have all of those books seperately, plus the re-released : Underhive book. I'd love to have the Battles book though..More studio terrain for me to improve upon!!
Speaking of books - I have the 2nd edition codex, wargear, and army list books - all I need now is the rule book and I can play 2nd edition 40k and pretend I'm in a time warp.
Progress has been made on the orrus. I wonder where the name orrus comes from?
Anyway he needs pupils in his eyes and some metalwork and gems but he is basically done.
Apparently this years fashionable noble-man is wearing pastels and brass.
...
Heh! He's awesome...and he makes me hear Boogie music every time that I see him...and then I recall your mention of a catheter and the music goes away.
What a fantastic job on his face! I can't believe how much expression you got into that sculpt, ace job, Weets! I like the paint scheme too - very supervillainy, it's a look that really suits them. You do have to wonder what they were going for with the original pose though
what's strange about it gitsplitta? I'm curious to hear your take on it.
Thanks scarper - I think I'm going to go blind with all these face details - getting the pupils in the right place is a matter of luck as much as skill sometimes.
cheers dstein Its a pleasure to paint these so thanks for sending them!
It's not your painting weety... he just looks odd to me (odder than the standard ganger... if you get my drift). Partial power armor and p-fists over a skin tight suit on a ganger... just something I've never seen the like of before.
Thanks dysartes I love to give my minis vivid expressions.
I'm currently experimenting with a squig. Its going to be blue-green probably with spots.
I'm afraid soon my painting might die off a bit because I plan to immerse myself in the world of Skyrim at the soonest possible date. I have been playing a lot of oblivion atm and I suddenly decided that I no longer wanted to see the same old forests of automatically generated trees and listen to that same damn voice actor do yet another npc's voice. I've seen some of the pics of skyrim and read things about how the shadows are accurately calculated and the trees are all hand picked and placed and I've gotten all excited and want to play!! OOOOOOOOh I can't enjoy anything until it pops through the letterbox - I should have just shelled out the extra 7 quid and got it from game!!! AAAAHHHHHHHH?GGGG!
Automatically Appended Next Post: NOOOOOOOO I cant wait! I'm praying to the daedric gods that someone outbids me on ebay so's I can go down the road and buy it from game tomorrow.
You know I'm not at all sure what any of them are called - Jaden and Reese? Chardonnay and Kylie?
Gods aside, skyrim is brilliant - Apart from the now astronomical number of times I've died. But at least its not too easy. I don't remember ever dying in oblivion much.
I found an ork in a basement talking to himself (the bandits all seem to talk to themselves?! Odd) and I must have tried to kill the great oaf ten times before giving up.
So I'm afraid there won't be any painting for a while at this rate.
No need to apologise weets.. your thread is so much fun.. it will be when you get back also..great job on the spyrer btw I still haven't had the guts to sit down with the game .. I know I would be gone forever..lol..
Bailey is so chuffed he can play it on the pc now.. told me last night he had downloaded twenty mods from steam on it.. not jealous at all.. :-(
Wow, missed some great stuff here. But now you've got Skyrim, so nothing for a while I guess..
Err, not that any of my absence can be linked in any way, shape or form to anything called Skyrim, you understand. I've just heard about it from a friend, like.
Nice job on those spryers, love the sword on the Jakara, very nice.
And superb work on your new avatar, awesome skin, hair, zebra cloth, etc etc etc
Also liking the orcs, and very keen to see what you do with those squigs.
And super jealous of your space crusade find, lovely stuff there. I still have one warrior unassembled, they were very cool, nicely alien I always felt.
Long dreadlocks and a goatee huh? About 10 years ago that would have been fairly accurate - dreads hanging past my ass and two beardlocks These days it's close cropped with mutton-chops.
neil - I very deliberately got it for the PS so I couldn't mod it. I've been on and off the same game in Morrowind for at least 6 years now, and I've barely touched the main quests due to the ridiculous amounts of mods I installed to keep me busy elsewhere. Plus my PC's still dead and there's no way it's running on this old lappie.
Well in actual fact I did get some painting done because I have to share the X-box dammit! so skyrim releases its icy grip temporarily and I have painted a squig. But the light is all wrong for pictures even with my daylight bulb so I'm still trying to get some focused pics.
Great to see you on dakka after so long monkeytroll!! Muttonchops huh? Sounds awesome. Did skyrim suck you in like an expensive call girl? Did I just type that? Oh dear I need a cup of tea.
Gonna try and get some photos to work now.
No but really its one step closer to the ultimate virtual reality fantasy roleplay we all dream of. Soon real life will be totally unnecessary and life will go sleep-skyrim-work-skyrim-sleep in that order.
thanks for looking alabamaheretic. Hope you enjoyed the show.
Hes not bad but the pictures don't quite catch him and I rush-jobbed the teeth a little bit. But I have learned much and the next squig will be better.
Its not easy to get a laugh these days - I might have to go look at the business cat meme to get inspiration. Basically I'm bored cos I can't play skyrim.
"Business squig prides himself on his perfect corporate smile"
Weeeeeelllll maybe. But we have a bit of an overload of the union jacks over here right now and it feels a bit like jumping on the bandwagon for the sake of popularity - but I could change the yellow to red and then its halfway there.
It felt like it had been a while since I picked up a brush so I did a flame coloured squig with malachite coloured eyes.
As usual my antiquated camera has trouble focusing on such a tiny squig. Its a shame.
Still not even half done with skyrim.
Or maybe not - I'm getting to the point in the game where I might get up for a while and go outside. Have you ever walked down a street and thought - "this real life business is almost like skyrim, look how 3D and real everything looks, except I have an umbrella instead of a daedric mace" And at that point you know that you've been playing too much.
and i fully agree with JB here... stop that skyrim stuff... if it keeps you from chucking out art... because art that squigg sure is!!! and i for one can´t complain with the focussing on that pic... looks very good...looks like a happy squigg^^
O hell I didn't read your little poem till just now - Mimes are looking for me!!? How terrifying. A very surreal poem which expresses well how much mimes have missed me. I might have to read it again just to make sure.
Tell them next time to mind the vegetables when they land their drop pods.
Speaking of vegetables, gardening in a monsoon is impossible.
Going to the circus next week - they may even have mimes, and they definitely have a knife thrower and a wheel of death!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and thanks Mr Von. It will be a pleasure to paint some more after so long an absence. The focus could be better but I'm glad you can appreciate them anyway. New camera soon.
There are a few things besides the tail that need a touch up so maybe I will do it. And then try and get crisper photos.
I think skyrim is loosing its vice-like grip on my mind and I have less shifts in work next week so you can look forward to more from me soon.
JB your poem was great. A beautifully surreal image of sad faced mimes (I imagine them with white faces and painted on tears).
Glad to hear that Skyrim is becoming less of a Time Tyrant, but it is your free time so I am happy to wait until you want to spend time painting minis.
On the other hand, the mimes won't wait. They have silent rages with frantic arm motions in between Weety posts.
I'm going to try and base everything from now on so I've been practicing making grass tufts out of feathers - like on seahorse-man here. Seahorse man is a slaneesh champion and he was just so cool I don't mind that he is fantasy. He may even get painted.
that rainbow farseer looks very cool... the transition is again superb... but what really brings this model to really pop are these unearthly white eyes!!!!together with the green faceplate... shockingly good!!!
and that seahorse- man... we need to see that painted by you!!! that screams for your talents!
Cheers ifalna - its meant to look a bit like malachite. Lots of bright colours and funky effects was my plan for this guy.
Don't worried dstein I think the break from painting recharged my enthusiasm for it.
Gitsplitta's eldar wraithlord is assembled and ready to sit on the shelf for a few more months. Or maybe I will get over my fear of huge smooth surfaces and paint it. I Altered the position of the fingers with a pair of small pliers wrapped in masking tape to give it a less static pose.
weetyskemian44 wrote:Seahorse man is a slaneesh champion and he was just so cool I don't mind that he is fantasy. He may even get painted.
To be fair, when he came out (alongside the appropriate Realms of Chaos book during Rogue Trader), I'm pretty sure there was minimal distinction between a 40k and Fantasy Chaos Chimp - even ones which have been gifted with the Face of a Fiend. The only difference would have been which shape base you gave him.
Maybe Weety subconsciously wants to paint some WHFB figures...
OOo jetbikes miss dee. The really old ones are rare - I have never seen one in real life.
dysartes yes I noticed that some of the old chaos champs end up pulling double duty. And its the face of a fiend is it? That explains it but I prefer to think of him as seahorse man. I want more mutant chaos freaks! They speak to me.
I do like a bit of fantasy but the huge regiments put me off so maybe I will just do a few of the characters and mount them on special base.
Blimey gits you have a lotta wraithlords - glad to take one off your hands. I will paint it I promise.
Now von dom lets see - how to do marbling? Here is a close up pic to help - first I used P3 privateer press paint called green ink watered down to just give a nice smooth blended surface. Then applied small blobs of random concentrated ink all over, then I mixed in a little black ink and tied it all together with more blobs - It kinda evolved randomly but you want to try and get veins of the lighter background going through the darker colour. Then I highlighted the veins slightly with more white (very sparsely applied otherwise it will look dumb).
Automatically Appended Next Post: Does anyone have any ideas for what I should paint on my wraithlord? Links to well painted ones would be usefull. Just going to google it now and see if I find any gooduns.
I was never any good at painting them. That old model is pretty static when compared to the new ones... so I think your challenge will be to make it look interesting and alive. Your pose changes were a good start, now you have to figure out how to add motion or dynamic lighting with your paint job.
Really would - I'm trying to do the shading and highlighting the old fashioned way and it doesn't quite translate to the dreadnought because of his size
In keeping with my new resolve to put bases on things here are some things I have based. I've got a whole pile of the little ruined paving bases and the orks are my first go with static grass - anyone have any tips for getting it neat?
You will be sorely disappointed if you get a "general purpose" airbrush. If you want to paint miniatures with it, you'll need a small needle/nozzle in a "detail" airbrush.
that termy actually looks way better than current ones... specially the face and the gun... specially the gun... the lil thinggummy on top is for me the icing on the cake..
So, there's a reason it is called "Static Grass". It comes from model railroading, and you can use static electricity to get it to 'stand up' neatly. So, a few tricks:
1) Apply your glue, sprinkle the static grass on, and then...
2a) Invert the mini and tap the base, lightly, against the side of a cup.
2b) Run a comb through your hair a few times, and then wave the comb very close to the grass. The individual fibers will be attracted to the comb.
Either one works.
There are also static grass applicators (one cheap, one expensive) that can help, but I've found I simply don't need them, since I'm not doing acres and acres of grasslands, like on a model railroad.
Comb, check. Hair, check. I think I can manage that. I feel sorry for the model railway enthusiast who is bald. Thanks briancj you have helped more than youtube did.
Rogue wolves those are old 1980s space mercenaries, also marketed as heavy imperial troopers. They are going to be dirtied up to go with the filthy space pirate I did a half dozen pages back.
Dsteingass I will take your advice when I get around to buying one. At the moment I just don't know where I would put it. One disadvantage to living in the cheapest flat ever is that it is also the smallest flat ever and my stupid boyfriend just brought home a doughnut maker (they were delicious in his defense).
Everyone else (sorry I gotta get to work so no time for more individual replies) I am glad you all love that inquisitor he is the bomb and it is quite a surprise to think he was sculpted in 1989. I altered the pose a little using GS otherwise he would have the same old static pose they all used to have.
Utter filth. These guys are in dire need of a bath and some armour polish. They will work for anyone - preferably someone evil - or at least willing to overlook their peculiar body odour. They are a motley band of career criminals and deserter guardsmen whose only loyalty is to the bottle and the brothel. Watch this space for more mucky mercenaries soon! (ish)
..You can also rub a baloon on your head like when you were a kid to make the static grass stand up, but generally the container is negatively charged, so it all sticks together then stands up somewhat naturally when glued down.
I'm tempted to repaint the whole lot of the mercs to be honest - their paintjobs are too bright and cheerful. Here they are - they are too well washed and clean cut by half.
Automatically Appended Next Post: These paintjobs will live on in digital photo form so I might as well...
Indeed mr von dom. I have got so used to stripping other peoples paintjobs off my minis. If I think that better can be done then I might go for it because these old 80s minis are expensive and deserve proper bases and the most up to date paintjobs.
The guy on the left of the new batch is still one of my favourite models you've ever done - he was the guy with the paintjob based off the grimy van, right? They're really fantastic! Look tough and mean, which is important for mercs, I imagine The colourful ones are ace too, but I can understand wanting to repaint - it's all stylistic, and if you've found something you prefer it can be hard to look at the old ones the same way.
Great to have you back, by the way, this thread went all quiet for a while! I believe there were some mimes?!
Not that I don't like my old paintjobs - they are special but I will always have pictures - Unless civilization ends in december and the internet gets unplugged.
Thats the guy - mouldy transit van.
Mimes did take over the blog for a while and of course not much was said because they were mimes. But the break did me good I'm sure

So with a Nurgle star, right... riiiiiiiigggggghhhhhtttttt?
Yeas there is nothing wrong with bright and clean when its appropriate (eldar) but I think these guys need gritty realism to bring out their best look. Even space marines can be forgiven for polishing their armour but these guys can't afford the polish and if they did they would only spend all day huffing it.
I think when I started this blog I had a lot to learn. At the time bright and clean was what I was good at so that's what I did. Painting dirty required confidence to experiment with the paint - the vallejo washes have helped as well as they are much more subtle than the garish GW paints I've got.
Can't win em all Brian, you have to admet I've captured more detail this time now - I didn't even realise he had a 7 on his shoulder last time. Some of the brightly coloured mercs will be preserved because I have duplicates!
And thankyou the rest o' you lot for your appreciation. It makes me paint more.
Is that a mini you've painted to look like the joker rogue wolves? He looks unmistakable.
weetyskemian44 wrote:Can't win em all Brian, you have to admet I've captured more detail this time now - I didn't even realise he had a 7 on his shoulder last time. Some of the brightly coloured mercs will be preserved because I have duplicates!
I fully agree that your skill has increased muchly, and I do enjoy watching your work. But I will always have a place in my heart for RT/2nd ed paint schemes, because that's what I grew up with. It is kinda like my love for 80's music.
Briancj I totally understand the love of 80s music. Sometimes I will just find myself singing 'Gold' (always believe in yourself) or some other mega-cheese hit. All the music I didn't even like when it was the 80s now seems to have aged like a fine vintage wine. (cos your indestructible, always believe in, gold)
And lets not forget all the power ballads and the 80s metal scene (so much hair), Micheal Jackson before he turn white and weird, early house music etc.
Thanks arakasi I guess I have. Extensive practice has been had - its about 2 years since I started painting again. Seems like only a year.
Yeah I was thinking that that little green screen on his gun would be some kinda motion sensor like in aliens. Either that or its just some fancy gadget that shows the weapons charge and condition - and maybe he can use it to play solitaire when he is bored.
Changin the name slightly here. A lotta stuff from a while back is gradually going to go through the stripper and get repainted and based up. Its good practice for me. It'll be better honest! Lots of photo updates tomorrow I hope.
That's awesome, Weety, thank you! I'm super impressed with your weathering of whites, wish I could do it like that I also wish GW still did this type of characterful, 'adventurer' type - your latest bunch of mercs each look like they've got a real story and personality behind them. Can't wait to see the rest of your repaints!
I don't but he is a GW sculpt so maybe ollie or mcvey. Thanks for your comment. Basing is something I have always told myself I will get around to later - and now is later so I better get around to it..

Phew, finally caught up! Didn't realise it had been so long since I'd last swung by here, but I had to read from page 93! Good job work's so quiet at the mo!
Loving the new look grungey, dirty stylee Weety, very nice! You Orks are great too - as an Ork player it warms my heart to see them getting some love, and I love the RT era models, had a box of em myself (which to eternal my shame I melted down when I foolishly believed I'd done with the hobby and I wanted to try my hand at pewter jewellery - d'oh!!... Nearly as bad as bullets Viktor!)...
The Nurgle marine with the autocannon is bloomin' marvellous by the way - is it one of the ones I sent you Weety? You've far exceeded what I thought could be done with it!
Oh yes I had forgotten about that - yes that is one of the ones you sent - he is the first to get paint. It has been rather a while since I saw the tic here.
You did what!!!! Never assume you're done with the hobby because no one ever is - it will haunt you in your dreams. Of course I love jewellery making as well (it shares many skills with modelling). I have a pile of rings and earrings I made in uni.
Ahh Mr monkeytroll I presume. Long time no see. You gone and got yourself a life or is it computer games keeping you busy? A break is a good stimulant to creativity I find.
It possibly wouldn't have been so bad if any of my attempts had worked out... As it was they looked like, well, metal coprolites!
But I have learned my lesson, and no more minis will end up on a spoon over a gas flame! It is fun watching them melt mind - it's quite sudden as it reaches the melting point, rather than gradual like ice... Not that I'm endorsing that kind of behaviour of course!
Well, you know, I spent a while there looking at various lives, examining this one and that one.
I've heard so much about them, figured I might try one out.
Couldn't find any in my colour though, so killed a bit of time wandering around Tamriel and New Vegas, watching the madness unfold in New Mexico/Mexico and working, working, working....
Yes - I remember it well. We used to make molds by carving into cuttlefish shells. Apparently its an ancient technique that's been used in Britain since ancient times to cast pewter jewellery.
I used Miliput, for my molds, but I didn't have the skill to do it with any degree of competency. I think I turned out 1 that was passable, in a kinda tribal style... Think I still have it somewhere...
Can I ask someone in the know what the League of Extraordinary Riveters is please? Seen in on a few sigs and I'm intrigued...
Its a bunch of talkative types who like to cover stuff in rivets. I don't necessarily have the patience for rivets in large quantity but these guys will absolutely cover stuff in riveting. Dsteingass's blog is a good example of a riveter in action.
Another hard week of foot-sore work is almost over and a three day weekend beckons. I asked my doctor this week if its normal to feel faint after standing up for 6 hours in a 35 degree heat. He said yes.
We need air con!!! Its a sweat-shop in there...
But in good news I have nearly finished repainting this model here. Old World Jack.
I really like this sceme.. I think I need to try this on a guardsmen some time! I just love the the white armor against the olive green fatigues.. and red is always my favorite accent color! .. plus im a sucker for one eyed minis (being blind in one eye myself) really nice one weety!
Nice repaint Weety! I like the colours too - I've always likeed the green/white combo with a complementary accent colour (with sturdy Brit "u" ). I think I did an Eldar walker in a similar sheme back in the day... The freehand on the shoulders and wrist are nicely done too...
Covering stuff in rivets? The clue was in the name really, should have figured (especially now I noticed the image is a link - great gallery, I love the Nuka Cola machine)... l think I'd have the patience to do it (I paint each rivet on my Ork vehicles - take it from me, there are a lot on a Dakkajet!) but I don't have the modelling abilities to scratch build things... Kudos to those who do, I am mightily jealous!
"What's this, then? "Astartes eunt domus"? People called Astartes, they go, the house?"
Lol - you guys are giving me praise where it isn't due - thats the old paintjob! No shading on the armour, not a splash of dirt and there's no base! But I'm flattered that you didn't all say OMG thats crap what happened to your skills.
But I am sticking to olive green, white (ish) and red accents
So first you re-painted it exactly the same as the first job, then re-re-painted it in a grim-dark version of the original? Yes? Yes? Yes? Oh. No.
The girl gone done good again
I'm glad you kept the same basic scheme, I felt that gave the first run of mercs and marines a very cool feel that I was really digging. Now with added grit, grime and filth it's even cooler.
The only people we hate more than the Welders are the fething Extraordinary League of Riveters
Yeah...
Splitters.
Splitters...
And the Extraordinary League of Extreme Riveters
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters...
And the League of Extraordinary Riveters.
Yeah. Splitters. Splitters...
What?
The League of Extraordinary Riveters. Splitters.
We're the League of Extraordinary Riveters!
Oh. I thought we were the League of Extreme Riveters.
Whatever happened to the Extreme Riveters, Vik?
He's over there.
Splitter!
Switching back to the mini in question - where did his pack come from? That's not the original is it?
No I chopped that backpack off a weird little kit of robot soldiers I found in a pound shop - mostly very inferior modelling but they had a few useful bits and might find a use for them at some point. will dig out some and take a pic sometime.
Your riveting homage to python amuses me. The riveteers will love it.
here are some of the other things getting repaints. And basic grey-scale progress on the inquisitor.
I figured my mercenaries needed a beastman and this beastman never really fitted in with the chaos beasts.
Looking forward to seeing the terminator fella and the chainsaw warriors get the Weety makeover treatment- is the 3rd one (with the chainsaw) going to be redone too? I miss my CW minis! Great figures...
I dunno why but the left hand dude on the 2nd pic down really reminds me of Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean... Perhaps I'm just losing it in my old age... savvy?
I guess I will repaint the guy with the chainsaw - bit I was fairly pleased with my first paintjob so I'm not sure. Here he is again
I'm enthusiasitic for painting the chap at the top on the right in the jumpsuit - he looks like he should be their pilot - hes got the right sort of helmet and those things on his cheast could be his old service ribbons
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and heres beasty with his old paintjob monkeytroll

QFT!!!
and weety... that is so....female of you... setting us out to fall in this huge trap of yours...posting the pic and then revealing it is still the old paintjob... tstststs...
of course now we have to say the new paintjob is way better... tho i gotta say i still lokied the stronger colors too... but where the new version wins all over is the characterful face...the mug is way better portrayed in its mimik...and i like the faded look of the overall...
what scheme have you chosen for the inq? he looks very classy ...will be major fun to see how you progress with that one...
Well I never intended any confusion Mr Dom, honest. And thanks for mentioning his face - I took special care over his big scar.
No ideas yet for the inquisitor. Lots of colours on the details but with a muted tone for the main armour plates is probably the plan.
JB that is a fantastic idea - I will just tone him down a bit with some extra washes and re-dye his hair dirty blond. It would be a damned shame to strip that free-hand work. He will live again!
It might be too dull - I had the idea to paint him a sort of lilac grey colour but I'm not too sure. Someone find us a dulux colour chart and we can choose the exact shade!
Oh dear its my last 8 hour shift till the three day weekend (lots of painting will take place I hope) and I can't stand up without swaying from side to side - but I can't complain to the boss because he is doing 9 days straight 12 hour shifts and thus has his own problems (I think he might be about to go on a murderous rampage). So when I feel bad I just look at him and thank my lack of ambition that I'm not the manager.
I think we may have been infiltrated by the CIA and they are testing their new torture methods on us. They are going to organize guantanamo bay into a gigantic poundstretcher and make everyone stand up all day until they spill the beans.
Barstards!! I demand I be arrested and detained without charge immediately and indefinitely.
But I get enough fresh prince as it is - they are always repeating it to the point where the sight of will smith sends me into a catatonic state. But they never repeat Cheers! Its not fair damn them.
Presenting Kylla Condotti, ex imperial pilot turned mercenary. I will have to make the mercs a spaceship for him to fly.. With obligatory before and after pics.
Thats the name GW give him in the catalogue but I might call him "crazy" Ivan Oblastov, most daring pilot in the Lambada Spur. Dishonerably discharged from the navy for his massive Krak habit, Ivan needed creds and a ready supplier - he found both when he joined the mercenary warband (need a name for them soon).
Here's the squad and their pilot - I've gotta throw together some kind of ramshackle assault shuttle for them. I think their story is that they travel the galaxy seeking employment - or just places to rob.

I never did finish the genestealer limo. Its on my shelf of shame waiting for another day. So yes - A friggin space ship that's what they need - I mean they have to have one - commercial transports wouldn't take this lot aboard and they can't just work over the one planet forever. Mercenaries in the modern marketplace need to make themselves flexible.
I was going to double check that that was the repainted scheme after my last faux pas, but you only bleedin went and put a side by side at the bottom... Loads better than the original paint job - your faces are getting better with every model - much more expressive... And the green wash over yellow is something I've employed a few times on instrument panels etc, very effective...
If there's any meat/booze combo spare I'm always temptable! Especially now - just got in after a trip out on the velocipede & I'm famished! 20 miles I did! 20!
Thats an awful lot of miles that is. I walked that far once and it took all day. (with a break for lunch).
Thanks for looking! I have a lot to thank vallejo for when it comes to faces - their flesh wash is perfection. A lot of skill is required to get those eyes and their pupils in the right place though.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I just spotted this on ebay - when painted it will make an excellent fighter escort for the spaceship. It is apparently 6.5 inches long so the scale is about right

Now this is how grimdark should be!!! I bloody love your work Weety, and I have to be honest, I'm somewhat jealous of your miniatures...
SUCH an improvement Weety - they look amazing together! A real motley crew, and they look tough as nails. As Archroy said, your faces are getting better and better, and the weathering is flawless. I especially love the background for the pilot - totally explains his lighter loadout to the others - if his day goes well, he won't even be picking up that rifle!
Can't wait to see what you do if you get your hands on that retro spaceship
Dysartes yes I can really picture this lot doing yoga... It would be comical to watch.
Thanks you guys for your acknowledgement. Unfortunately some splitter went and outbid me on the buck rogers fighter - But There are others so maybe I will win the one with all the paint falling off and the missing engines - Perfect for my purposes as I'm going to hack it up and repaint anyway.
The latest merc - Just a few more to go now. I'm not totally convinced by this one - I think maybe he needs more variety of dirt.
Ooh, now that guy is impressive! Looks like an old Dredd wastelander or something? It's funny how your early shiny palette has been worn down by the grimdark! But a fine thing too.
Peace button would be humorous, like in the film it would represent the dichotomy of man.
I was worried about the monochrome - unlike the others he has all over body armour and as I had planned to do all the armour white(ish) I was left with a very dull palette. Maybe he needs something else.
I do miss the old bright colours but then I am pleased that I can make dull minimal palettes look good. And there will always be some minis that will merit bright vivid colours.
Looking good there Weety, the muted palette really suits the mercs (although as you said, there'll always be a place for bright & shiney)...
I still think his face reminds me of Davey Jones though (or is it Rorschach?)... Maybe it's none of the above and I'm just stone bonkers in the nut... Ho hum...
I'm on holiday! Hooray. Going to wales on Wednesday to scale peaks and eat lamb. Nomnomnom. Maybe also cheese on toast - which I am reliably informed is the welsh national dish, closely followed by takeaway curry.
So to celebrate escaping the underpaid treadmill of work here is a mercenary who I will call Herman Zeightgrubber. A man who loves his work. He calls his missile launcher Frau Gertrude and he likes to talk to it when performing maintenance.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I seem to have forgotten to paint his eyes - oops
I just slung random german sounding names and stuff together till it sounded cool. I want them to have a variety of different European sounding names. So far we have
Herman Zeightgrubber - missile guy
"crazy" Ivan Oblastov - the pilot
"dirty" Dirk Sanchez - the guy with the pointy helmet
Gotta name the rest
Dstein - yes the welsh aren't really known for their cookery - which is why they have so many chinese and indian takeaways. But then again who doesn't like cheese on toast? They call it "welsh rarebit" in wales so its more special and sometimes they put bacon in it.
Now bacon..That's a delicacy!! At least properly cut and cooked bacon..Too many restaurants and people in the US overcook bacon. There is a true art to cooking pig.
YES! Thanks monkeytroll you made me see the miniature in a whole diffrent light - I bet he clenches his buttocks and grunts as he pulls the trigger. Lol, he loves to fire Gertrude.
Yeah I gotta buy some more! I might have to try making my own.
Here is names and back stories for the rest.
Names
This guy ^ can be called Jørgen Nutt. He makes up heroic stories about his scar but everyone suspects that he got it from repeatedly headbutting a sharp bulkhead while high on meth.
^Lucky Steve Stoyanov, He isn't really that lucky, in fact he is quite clumsy at times so the other mercs thought it would be funny to call him lucky. He stitched on the number 7 because he is superstitious and thinks he is under the evil eye.
^ Jerrod Zinkburger, proud owner of an occasionally functional jetpack, a meltagun and the most complete suit of armour in the mercs, Jerrod is considered a bit swanky by the others and dibs have been taken on who gets his kit when he dies. But he just won't die...
^Domingo Jalepeto, Nicknamed "Mingo the merciless" or just mingo to his amigos. This mean man prefers to keep his face concealed as he secretly fears that the inquisition will catch up with him for his past heinous crimes. During a heist on a mothballed imperial battlecruiser mingo broke into the control room and programmed an orbital barrage on the nearby heavily occupied planet for sh*ts and giggles. He feels pretty bad about it sometimes, but only when he is really maudlin drunk.
^ Delray "cueball" Sarrazin. Ex guardsman, dishonorably discharged for giving his squad food poisoning, he claims to be an excellent cook. Other mercs live in fear of his escargot in a creamy sauce, made with fresh stink-slugs scrapped from the bilge tank.
^Lucky Steve Stoyanov, He isn't really that lucky, in fact he is quite clumsy at times so the other mercs thought it would be funny to call him lucky. He stitched on the number 7 because he is superstitious and thinks he is under the evil eye.
He's the Souther Trooper from the Rogue Trooper miniatures range, I've never seen one painted before.

Could the mask also be for his career moonlighting as a luchador?
He is totally a luchador on his days off look at him how could he not be. But I thought that didn't sound very 40K so I left it out. Maybe they could call it space wrastling.
Thanks mr JB I took special care over them - I might do longer stories for them - which will be lurid but basically safe for work-ish.
But it has to be space luchador not just luchador. otherwise its not 40k
I have to go to wales now and climb bloody huge mountains. unfortunately I haven't quite finished another merc and probably wont till I get back next week. But maybe there will be some fluff while I'm in wales - Maybe.
No cheese on toast (does cheese in a pitta bread count?) yet but as its my birthday we are going for takeaway curry.
I'm older - it sucks. Apparently I'm meant to have ambition and goals in life.
Car is going to be scrapped. No more car. I will have to catch the bus along with all the old people, teenagers and skag heads. With the price of petrol on the rise I need a land yacht.
Lots of mountains have been climbed (well 2 anyway) and I miss painting and models a bit. I will be sure to go nuts and paint loads when I get back.
Thankyou all for your kind messages of birthdayness. Curry will be sought out and devoured. I like lamb madras myself. But basically any curry will do so long as its not vindaloo or phaal (cos I'm just not that hardcore). I will eat a raw chilli for a dare but I draw the line at making a meal so hot that I can't taste it.
Anyone scrapped a car recently? I reckon £100 is a good price but I have just had new tires so I'm hoping to squeeze a little extra ££ out of em for that.
Really want some of those new cultists from GW - gotta resist the temptation till nearer xmass. They will be cheaper given time - get some smeared in paint by some halfwit child and they will be cheaper for sure!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ebay is completely flooded with them atm for about 1.20 each if you buy 10. But thats kinda put me off because everyone will have them and I like to be a bit more exclusive than that (lead snob that I am).
Lamb is appropriate for wales and our curry did have lamb in it. Our meal was slightly disturbed by the bloody border police dragging half the staff out for questioning.
Unfortunately none of my models are older than me. They get close.
Bathday!!?? Hopefully bathday happens more than once a year dysartes. But its the thought that counts.
Mr monkeytroll no never I am terrified of heights. Utterly shamefully terrified. I even get worried when other people go close to a cliff. My kind of climbing envolves stout hiking boots, a walking staff and a rucksack full of pic-a-nick. More like hiking uphill than climbing.
We found some nice broken slate today which I will incorporate into bases and hopefully dioramas. Wales has lots of variety of basing materiels.
Only two more days of this wales malarky and then I can get back to miniature painting.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh and pop fact - Bethesda is originally a small village in wales... who knew?
That's a major US Navy Navy Hospital, but the word is a feminine first name of Hebrew language Origin and it means "house of Mercy" I can't help you with the curry though...not my thing at all
I just remembered to check back in. Wow, it's been a while since I was here. I'm glad to see the blog is still ongoing. I like the new paintjobs, but I worry that all the old colorful models will be redone as newer, less colorful models. Still... I do have to admit they look fantastic!
I can't wait to see the Inquisitor in terminator armor finished.
Hello there you guys. Now I know I said I would get right back to painting but the stress of returning to work and all the various paperwork I needed to get done to become an official pedestrian got in the way. No more car for me - they dragged it away in chains to be executed for its lead and copper content.
Got a new camera for my stupid birthday! 16megapixels!
I took some new photos of old minis to illustrate the new depth I can get without pesky pixels showing too much.
Dolf "maximum" Maxamillian. Dolf likes to have the maximum rate of fire, hence his nickname. His other hobbies include grunting enigmatically, giving people the 1000 yard stare and scowling. While the other mercenaries believe Dolf to be nothing but a mindless combat animal he in fact has hidden depths. He is wracked with complex emotions over his dead PDF comrades and family. His planet was wiped out by the Imperium after they were deemed to have been corrupted by zenos. Dolf now has a grudge against the universe and hopes to loose himself in heavy gunfire and bloodshed.
