Hooray for extreme self criticism! I will try not to let it get me down, after all there is a limit to what can be done with human hands and eyes. I think the tiny mistakes look more interesting than pixels anyway.
as a matter of fact... i really do like giving criticism... and even more so... it got me aquainted with so many peeps here... as a i think a true critic ( the constructive sort) has to do one thing beforehand ... really look at the thing... this is attention you give to peeps... and peeps always like that...
Don't worry von dom its good to have a really honest opinion sometimes! And those mold lines need to be pointed out sometimes.
Thanks monkey. Big pics shall be the rule.
Here is another pale and sinister brood brother / delaque ready to die for the family. The delaques need basing - I will try and seek out some urban bases for them.
....by the way dave... i know you don´t want to hear that probably after painting... but that steamborg while awesomly painted has a horribly moldline gauging my eyes out
...sometimes...
Automatically Appended Next Post: Love the stormcoat Weety! I Want to paint my Delaques, but I agonize over picking one scheme.
..And...uhh..your barrel could use a touchup with a drill bit though.
We are in the business of splitting hairs. If it wasn't for macro photography I would be daubing the paint on with a blunt twig. But its part of what I love about miniatures, arguing over details which are invisible to the human eye.
Cool, love the jacket, that's a great green for outdoor wear
If we're going to be picky looks like the shading above the straps on his right temple looks a bit thick (size-wise that is, I'd never acuse you of not thinning your paints proper like )
And if we are going for uber crit then I just noticed that he has a lumpy bottom lip and a massive pimple on his nose. But we can put that down to random mutations!
The lenses are just a vallejo blue wash over a carefully graded black and white background. The main trench coat colours are grey with just a dash of purple in it and an aqua green called "dusty green" from anita's all purpose acrylic line (not great paints but I really love the colour) in it. Most of the paints I used on him are vallejo wash paints. Best paints in the world and from what remember marginally cheaper than citadel. I should do another step by step photo essay sometime.
This is the mercenary outfit's token beastman. Originally named Gorden Freebeast, but none of his comrades bother to remember his name. They variously call him "goat-face", "daggy-ass" or "stink-horn" but Gorden does not take to much offense as he knows the other mercs are just as bestial as himself and they are all a bunch of filthy animals so he fits right in.
Gorden has long been a victim of prejudice, he and his people where hounded into ghettos on their home-world for being scary looking and (supposedly) lusting after normal women. A mercenary life is Gorden's ticket out of the beastman ghetto and he is always looking to get ahead. One day he hopes to return home and settle some scores
Gorden is a much better name for him than Billy. I can't root for Billy but I find myself hoping that Gorden achieves his life's ambition, even if that means just settling old scores on his homeworld. I imagine that he even reads and writes better than his merc partners.
Definitely JB - he has to continually prove that he is better than the rest of the mercs because he suffers from low self esteem too.
Thanks y'all for the support! I will keep on trucking.
Today I purchased two more mercs - they are Sarge Rockhard and Catachan Luke from the mercenaries section: http://www.solegends.com/citrt/rt7mercenaries.htm They won't be arriving for a time as I had to pay by e-check. I also got some metal decking bases for the delaques and hybrids.
Good job with Gorden, but shouldn't he have a crowbar?
Love the muted colours, excellent choices as usual. Ny only crit is that the nose-ring doesn't seem to stand out from the face, but that may be different in RL.
Liking the little bits of fluff you're giving us about the minis, keep that coming. Patiently awaiting the next guys, but don't you already have Sarge?
Monkeytroll you get a cookie for getting my gorden freebeast reference! A very special invisible cookie.
As to sarge I don't have that one but he does look a bit like Plunderino Pete who I have two of.
Valhalla he comes that way. He is one of the very few imperial guard beastmen ever made. I think there were just 3 - this one, one with two clubs and the one with a plasma pistol and chainsword
That beastman is beautiful, Weety! The different tones of leather and the fur are particularly well done. I don't know if I've mentioned it enough, but I'm really enjoying the little snippets of fluff lately - they're so creative, and really add to the personality of your minis. Apologies for the quiet spell - I'm still loving your work, even if work means I don't have time to comment!
I'm sure the others all got the reference, it's just I was the only one feeling desperate for cookies And invisible ones are great, thanks a lot I can pile my plate full of them and no-one says a thing about being greedy.
Yeah, I realised it was Petey boy you already had just after posting that.
In Eve Online the viewpoint drifts slightly when you're in space and on occasion I would find that the rocking of my boat would match with the rocking of the screen, that was always a slightly weird feeling
TBH, I've only played bits of half-life, although I have the orange box on steam I've never actually installed it
me neither... it came out at a time where everyone I knew played games on the PC... and I cannot stand playing on a PC... just hate it... too many damned buttons...
I played it for a while last year when a friend gave it to me but eventually the low quality graphics made me a little sick too - I love the idea of a game with no loading screens though. Hate loading screens so much. They should do that again sometime!!.
Hey scarper thanks - it was reading your fluff (after months of skipping it to get to the pictures) that got me to do some myself. I love the way you really flesh your characters out. So I thought with the mercs being such characterful minis they better have some stories to back them up - maybe I will write more..

You should check out Black Mesa; it's a complete recreation of the original Half Life in the Half Life 2 game engine - I must admit I'm finding replaying many of my classic games a bit of a pain thanks to the graphics nowadays as well, so projects like this are always a win for me. Can't wait for the HD Baldur's Gate rerelease
Its official apparenty. I never played the original myself.
But anyway. Does anyone remember this from buck rogers? Personally the only thing I remember from buck rogers was that horny little robot that went "Bidi-bidi-bidi, that chicks got nice jugs buck, Bidi-bidi-bidi". But anyway this is a nice little space fighter and perfect scale for wh40k. It has a great shape. Its the Lamborghini of space fighters
I've got one of them about here somewhere Weety, in thankfully better condition, but then again it isnt going to be converted/painted so nevermind lols
I wonder why it has that extra piece on the front? they've elongated the two cones coming out of the front and attached that crosspiece. That looks strange. Keep in mind, that I loved Buck Rogers when i was a kid and was always upset I didn't get the toy space fighter. lol
It was such a filthy little robot. And it had a girlfriend robot who was a bit loose.
Von dom it was only 2 pounds 50p including postage because of the terrible condition. There are loads on ebay - just type in buck rogers and search for toys - but make sure you get the big one not the tiny little one.
LOL..I remember it was a horrible show...lol..horny little robot!
Half-Life set the standard by which all FPS games have been based off of since, great story, great game series!
I am incapable of playing any FPS game with a gamepad,
I cannot get used to aiming with those damn analog sticks! But..you give me a mouse and keyboard, and I will PWN you all day long!
weetyskemian44 wrote: It was such a filthy little robot. And it had a girlfriend robot who was a bit loose.
its amazing when you watch back your childhood favourites as an adult how much sluttyness and downright homoerotic subtexts were put into them...
take He-man for instance... Ram-Man, Fisto... even He-Man liked to oil himself up and wear leather straps... I MEAN DEAR GOD PEOPLE WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?
Pretty cool! I have one in better nick, but again, that's not planned for chopping and splicing, it's to sit with all the other sci-fi Dinkys in a cupboard in my folk's garage
Corgi made a few variations on the basic model, including that version with the frontal crosswing.
At two and a half earthsquids that's certainly worth grabbing for choppy-choppy
Hah, I'd actually forgotten about the female robot.
I became cynical today when my boss told me I had to try and sell either toilet roll or snuggle socks (all pink) to every customer. Every, single. customer. I even had to sign a piece of paper to that effect. To be honest it was quite funny trying to sell pink snuggle socks to manly looking men. And someone asked me if I thought they had the dire rear when I asked if they would like toilet roll with that. But still.
Groan - too much alchohol last night. Fun was had though so it was worth it.
I'm gluing things together today. Hive Brat got his arms and a dueling pistol, space pirate fella got a new melta gun as his old one was broke, and this delaque had a wonky gun barrel needed re-attaching. I have a vague feeling I might paint an eldar later after I have crushed some rebel scum in Tie Fighter! Pewpewpew.
You don't know tie fighter!? Its only the best space fighter sim ever. Its a bit short on real physics - there is no inertia or momentum so when you stop your engine you decelerate, and the lasers don't move at the speed of light like they should. But I think it makes for a more fun game.
Well I had a productive afternoon - I made my first cornish pasty (very nice it was) and painted an eldar in the limited palette style - He isn't quite done I need to paint his base when the PVA dries and maybe add some more details. The question is, should I paint the rest of his gems blue or leave them white? Anyone have an opinion?
Blue gets most votes so Blue it is then - It will help liven up the overall look. Give him a bit of bling as it were.
Briancj don't be embarrassed - retro gaming is cool. Balance of power sounds like an interesting way to pass the time - better than solitaire.
I have to go to work shortly and ask people if I can interest them in our fantastic deal on "cosy-soft" toilet roll. I feel like such a corporate whore. The toilet roll is neither cosy, nor soft, it should be call "cheap-scratchy". I wish I had a job looking after injured dolphins or giving out free animal balloons to children.
Eldar chappy looks fantastic Weety - and I'd have to go with the majority, deffo blue gems! And since I've been playing catch up, Gordon the beastman was gorgeous (but only in a painting sense)... The skin tones were off the charts! I'm afriad your Half Life reference went over my head though :(
Viktor von Domm wrote: dunno why... but whenever i tried to play half-life i got kind of sea sick... somehow related to the graphic back then i guess...
You're not alone in feeling sick when playing Half Like Vik, my friend was exactly the same. Apparently it's a known phenomenomenomenomenon - the Googles bring up loads of results for motion sickness in relation to HL2, including here...
Edit: Just had a thought - Weety, have you thought of maybe flogging home-made oggies to the grockles instead of bog roll and pink socks? Much more dignified!
well you have to look reeeeaaaally close for any errors and mind you i do^^ but what i see is a cool and subtile painted model here! the muted hues look very cool! as do the gems!
An idea for a diorama keeps banging away in my head. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I might accomplish this? I want gnarled windblown trees, carrion crows, craggy boulders and a nice medium sized shell crater. And of course a dead guy getting his eye pecked out. Apologies for the terrible picture I seem to have forgotten how to draw (it has been at least a year since I last tried). Maybe there will be a few nurglings scuttling about relishing the decay. I have some imperial guard multi-parts for the corpse and plenty of gravel for rocks, but how do I do the base and the tree and is there anywhere selling 28mm scale crows? These are the problems that face me.
Yeah, milliput makes a good basing material. Off the top of my head I can't think of anyone else who does crows in 28mm, but I o know they're out there. Interesting twigs or small branches make good dead trees - as in fact do dead bonsai I've been thinking of using some of mine for just such a purpose - haven't bothered yet as dead trees don't fit so well into my current terrain fix (Mine all died after moving to the boat, they didn't care much for the windy conditions )
I'll have a look at them and see if any seem suitable for wind-blown.
Banged together some bits to start with - It'll help me to picture the diorama if I have something 3D to play around with. His pose will make more sense with the contours of the landscape beneath him
I think I came up with this idea because of watching a history program about world war one with loads of grim rotting corpses lying about. It's an important visual theme of warfare the old rotting corpse. Man made into meat. It's the underlying reality of war.
Knarled trees and roots can be had by wrapping any kind of wire into an armature, then coat it all with Liquid Green Stuff or some sort of modeling goop, the more lumps, the better, just don't worry about being neat and tidy with it.
Viktor von Domm wrote: hmmm... dunno about the vulture... tis not a raven... and for that special dio i think a raven would be more true to a certain kind of mental image...
It depends on how you think really. For me its a Vulture, but for others they'd think Raven. It's down to the individual in each case really.
plus I've yet to see a decent cast of a Raven other than the Mordheim signpost one.
Well thanks guys I thing that last one would be great - and then of course I could make a graveyard as my next diorama! Instant diorama pretty much, I would just need a few plastic skeletons and a wizard. But I first will have a go at GSing a raven. Just to see if its possible and because funds are low. I like to live life outside of my overdraft facility and I'm currently throwing money at a genestealer magus model.
A vulture (or several)would really be hilarious, but its drifting away from my original idea - and I would need to cut larger holes in the guardsmen. I can't really imagine a vulture being delicate enough to peck out an eye. Vultures are more gothic.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I mean ravens are more gothic...
Vultures stab at the dead with their beaks, when you watch wildlife programs they take a little meat at a time, so an eyeball would be an appropriate sized morsel for it imo.
But I would like to see a scratch sculpt of a raven too
Its quite a scary prospect sculpting a raven but I will have a go later and see what happens. I can do miniature skulls so maybe I can do ravens.
I got some great metal decking bases from Dark Art miniatures and I'm putting a lot of the necomunda minis on them (not the orlocks they will have to have something special.)
Photo round-up of things getting prepared for paint.

This guy is ex-Flight Lieutenant Eugene Zebulon the third. He is a defector from the planet Zardoth V Planetary Defense Navy. He gets to fly Buck Rogers' ship.
Lieutenant Zebulon was at the terrifying battle of Nylar 6 where he disgraced himself by turning his craft around and flying away never to be seen again. He would no doubt be languishing in military jail but for the fact that every witness was destroyed by the rampaging chaos fleet. He still wears his uniform and flies his now heavily modified space interceptor. His greatest fear is that one day his noble and wealthy family will find out he is alive and a coward and will be disgraced in polite society.
He likes to drink spirits excessively before space combat to calm his jittery nerves.
Vallhala you can show us a pic - just make sure to label it. I'm looking forward to seeing whatever it is!
Thanks von dom I do love a bit of sci-fi. That's why I'm here!
Monkey troll what's Sean? If I'm referencing it its probably a second hand reference. Let me guess its a film about an alcoholic coward who disgraces his family name?
The brat will be a little bit flamboyant because he just has to be. But I will try and bring what I've learned to the model rather than just painting him exactly like my other brat.
Rogue wolves this is an "iron claw" space pirate. Iron Claw models were sculpted by Bob Olley back in 1987-8. He had a different style from the others. Some of his minis are proper cool - others are very odd looking, many are both odd and cool.
The model might need some more detail - a splash of dirt and maybe some glowing LEDs on his gun? He needs just a little something to make him groovy.
I'm still amused I managed to mix up Bob Naismith and Bob Olley up in my mind when I was at the Mantic Open Day - no wonder Bob N was a bit confused when I asked about Scrunts...
Lol Dysartes - Don't you just hate those moments when one appears to others to be a loony due to a simple mistaken identity. When I was very young and stupid there was a teenager living down the road called Micheal Jackman, and after sitting listening to two Micheal Jackson fans talking about how much they loved his singing and dancing I went and asked Micheal Jackman what it was like to be a pop star and did he really used to be black? I was literally awed to have a famous singer living down the road. I like to think I've gotten more intelligent since then.
That's pretty good Valhalla all perfectly smooth and neat. I personally would recommend that you cover it all over (using a big soft brush) with watered down dark umber wash (devlain mud?). I always think vehicles look better with mud on them and yellow looks better dulled down a bit. Thanks for sharing.

that left me speechless due to rolling on the floor holding my tummy^^ LOL
lol at both weety and Dysartes. Way to make yourselves look cool
Hah, I was reading Zardoth as a derivative of Zardoz, and Mr Connery was Zebulon Shalako in Shalako Was wondering if Eugene was a reference too, but obviously not. Just me getting my nerd on
I was actually thinking of Zardoz when I called it Zardon. After all who could forget the man-kini look. But zebulon is just a coincidence, I picked it out of a list of old fashioned names.
I can think of a lot of situations where being young and ignorant but eager to express my opinion has got me into trouble. I think once when I was 6 and we were watching news about sectarian violence in northern ireland and I piped up and said "why can't the catholics and the prostitutes just get along" and my parents wouldn't explain why what I said was so funny.
Really great work on the leather on the latest chap, weety! I really like the model actually - the proportions are really odd, but have a great character to them. I think the background you've picked for him suits his expression to a tee!
This is the first rogue trader model that I bought in my collection - Hacker Harris. He has a great pose - he looks like he is playing air guitar axe style.
I will call him Captain Günther Schulz. He is the current spokesman for the mercenaries, being as he has the most experience and kills and the best hair. He likes to think of himself as being the captain, and he is so long as he continues to be successful. The other mercs wouldn't hesitate to mutiny if his leadership falters however.
Günther enjoys bullsh*t macho posturing, unpleasant suprises(for other people) and telling exaggerated tales of his own greatness to a captive audience. Although he appears to be lightly armoured Günther has a secret force field device which has allowed him to cheat death many times and enhance his reputation. The others know not to get on his bad side as he enjoys playing dangerous practical jokes.
Yes! lol he does look exactly like lord flashheart (I still find it hard to believe that Rick Mayall plays him - so different to his Bottom character).
Flashheart: The first thing to remember is always treat your kite [Whacks diagram with his pointer.] like you treat your woman [Whips the air. Hard.]
George: Ho-how do you mean, sir? You mean, um... you mean, take her home over the weekend to meet your mother?
Flashheart: No. I mean get inside her five times a day and take her to heaven and back!
Blackadder: I'm beginning to see why the Suffragette Movement want the vote.
Flashheart: Hey, any bird who wants to chain herself to my railings and suffer a jet movement gets my vote!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Gunter is definitely a ladies man - or he likes to think he is anyway.
He looks awesome, love the denim, and the hair is wonderful! I can totally see him playing defenseless as his assailant closes in, then jumping them when his forcefield deflects a shot. Ace!
I do actually have a sharp set of nails - cut myself now and again. But I need them for the blasted touch screen tills(give me a keyboard any day).
The secret to the delaques skintone is to add a little grey to the flesh wash - it gives a subtler effect - in fact thats the answer to a lot of subtlety in painting - add varying amounts of grey.
The aliens gave me the civ3 expansion pack 'Conquests'! Thats the real reason I haven't painted anything recently - that and some nights on the town, friends doing open mike nights etc. Some talented musicians out there who just didn't get lucky but haven't given up yet.
I might paint some squats soon monkeytroll. I have some spares kicking around to practice on.
This is Boris the Bratt. He is more grimdark than my last bratt who was a touch psychedelic - http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/277336-.html?m=2 Also this is my first attempt at a non-metalic metal sword:
Is it a vintage Rt era fig? He looks like he is wearing Empire (Landschnecht?) clothing? I love the giant hand-cannon and the purple and brown scheme is great!
He is a confrontation hive brat (early necromunda style game) dstein. But he does have fantasy empire arms because they go well with the rest of his getup.
Those Empire arms go so well with his outfit, because he's a pretentious ganger who aspires to be considered one of the upper crust. He probably has a little status within his group, and can send others to do most of his dirty work, while pretending he's not a dirty, throat-slitting ganger. So he "puts on airs" and wears fine clothes trying to fit into a world that will never accept his brutish ways, but always reluctant to mention it to him.
I can see him chafing under his boss, always wondering why he himself isn't in charge, and forever scheming to rise to the next rank.
Automatically Appended Next Post: He also wears the mask when he has to get his hands dirty, never understanding his pompadour and fancy clothes give him away.
We found civilization the board game in the second hand shop the other day. It has 780 plastic miniatures, or thereabouts. Going to try painting the ships! Also painting a squat today, it has been too long.
I didn't know that Civilization had a board game version. Hmm...I may have to go play Civ 4 Gold now. You've reminded me that I haven't played it in a long time.
I didn't know either till I saw this - I bet it takes a while to play though (just like the real thing!)
Freshly minted new-look squat. I've got a few squats left to paint - heavy weapons and bike. They will be painted like this. I may strip some of the other painted squats and re-do them.
Thanks you guys - there will be more squats soon - found a nest of them hiding in one of my miniature stashes - there's about 8 of em complete with heavy weapons and leaders.
Strange dream last night - I dreamt that Jimmy saville touched me in a bad way so I had to assassinate him and his two evil clones to save the children and avenge my honour. I got the two clones with a rockfall trap and the shot the original saville with an arrow to the face. It was all kind of skyrim style - I think I used a daedric arrow to administer the coup de grass . Quite frightening really, in the dream savile was quite a powerful bad guy and he nearly got me with his magic fireballs, and I really did believe it was happening. Weird - but I'm strangely proud to have defeated dream-saville.
Anyway back to reality - a supply drop from TheTrollTrader.com, a great little company in Nequay, Cornwall. These were a real steal considering they are normally 9 pounds each and I beat him down to 6 apiece.
Also just for fun here is work in progress on a tiny tiny ship.
Sir Jimmy Saville was a BBC DJ who became very popular for his (supposedly) charitable works for children and his odd appearance. Since he died it has became apparent that he sexually molested at least 700 teenagers during his long career. Its been all over the papers recently and was bound to end up in my tortured nightmares sooner or later.
I forget that Americans have probably never heard of him - he was mega celeb over here.
He had a knighthood - Its like finding out that your favourite uncle shoots puppies. Although come to think of it he was always a bit of a creepy weirdo.
Automatically Appended Next Post: In the dream he had a weird temple on wheels. It had magical statues that fired spinning metal discs at me and I had to deflect them back to destroy the statues. Then I ran and did a spinning leap into the temple - Sir Saville shouted "NOW THEN NOW THEN!" and began to draw his golden mace, quick as a flash I drew my bow and shafted him right between his eyes, shattering his trademark rose tinted sunglasses into a thousand shards. It was awesome. Best dream ever.
First day of the holiday and I'm off too a quick start. An exercise in batch painting and a new look for the squats. I'm very happy with the way the colours fit together. I will put up some more pics when I finish the bases. Click for zoomable.
An enthusiastic reception for the squats! Its ever so tempting to strip the others and mass-repaint my squat army now. But I should probably paint some of the huge pile of unpainted minis I have first.
Here is a pic of the old squat paint scheme - bright and shiny as a lollypop.
Beautiful work weety, nice bases too, good complement to the minis. That's a great looking squad, great faces - the contemplating cigar chomper, the grinning las-cannoneer and the scowling dude, quality stuff.
That's a really neat squad. I like almost every squat model GW produced, and you've made them into a very nice and cohesive unit. For some odd reason though, I keep thinking of Gamma World.
Would it be considered blasphemy if I took those old squat minis and upgraded the weapons to the new look? This gives me some ideas, provided that those old minis aren't worth a fortune by now.
Unfortunately they are about 4 pounds each for simple troopers in the buy it now section. You will get cheap deals on plastic squats and squats missing their arms and seeing as you are converting them anyway its a win win situation.
You should all totally get some squats for your armies. Let me know if you do and show pics.
Slightly blurred photo of my commissar, I think I need to take another photo with a different background - anyway he isn't quite finished I just noticed a gem on his sword which needs paint. I never actually painted this guy before even though I've had him for years, he was already painted when I got him to quite a high standard - But now I think I can do better.
.................

Is there like an official story as to why jervis hates squats? Or even a rumour. Did he get beaten a lot by squat armies or is he just racist to short people?
I promise to paint something soon, but my skyrim addiction is resurging atm so free time is scarce.
Don't just chuck things in the stripper - if you're going to tip, then be gentle, just tuck it in the thong - chucking things will just get the bouncers mad
I always thought it was odd, given that the wargear list allowed comissars a vast array of nasty guns, that this guy only has a lasgun and a bayonet. Maybe it is a special lasgun
I love your blog, particularly because you're constantly improving, it's fun to watch you over time.
Also, as much as i enjoy watching someones process it's nice to know that if i see an update from you, 90% of the time it's a lovely finished model ready for display.
Thirdly, i love that you are sprucing up these OOP models, they really deserve some TLC.
Proving all of my points are your recent Squats. Great job!
Thanks casey'slaw - is that bambi's dad you have as your avatar? Inventive! I'm glad you like my finished pieces - occasionally people want to see the painting step by step but I think it would get boring if I did it all the time.
Monkey - A sleeper has awakened! He needs a sandworm to ride.
commander cain and vallhalla - it was very very thick paint - I think this was one of the first models I purchased and at the time I didn't know how to strip paint so I just painted over the already really thick paintjob. I think someone had already painted over the first paintjob. So I am very pleasantly surprised to find detail under the gunk.
It is indeed Bambi's dad, good spot! I couldn't decide on something i liked recently and then i stumbled across a clip of the film while researching something else.
Think an old school Disney marathon is going to happen soon!
I was thinking about stripping some of my squats so I could make up a squad in the new paintjob. But I thought I should take a photo of the old paintjobs to help me decide.
Some problems I have with these miniatures; They look a little to blond and tanned like some kinda beach squats, and for my current tastes the blue and grren are too vibrant. On the other hand I am awfully fond of them and they are very very neat.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also why did I paint the visors gold???? I think I may have been thinking of the gold visors that apollo astronauts have. But blue visors are just better.
Well quite obviously after the gribbly nids nom-nommed all their buddies these 5 decided to hitch a ride to the Hah-Y-E system and spend some time with the surf. After a few decades of this they'd run out of funds and had to go back into the mercenary business so that they can afford to travel over to the N-T-Podes as they've heard good things about the booze and women in that cluster.
And they need those RayBan visors on the beach you know.
Casey'slaw you hit the nail on the head. I do love them, but I may strip them anyway - don't worry there are another 10 of the old paintjob squats left - these were just the orangey-est ones. Or maybe I should just buy more squats(checks bank balance): where the bloody hell did all the money go!?! I swear my housing association charges me for rent twice.
Well then - here is my to do list of models that have been grey-scaled ready for painting.
Hybrid - I'm very pleased with my assembly on this one - it required a lot of GS and patience. I found an extra claw arm in my bits box that was just perfect and I had no idea where it came from. The magazine on his autopistol looks dead straight and that was the hardest bit to get right!
Commissar lasgun man. I think maybe he is using the humble lasgun to show solidarity with the troops - but I bet he has had it secretly upgraded to master crafted hot-shot.
This Ork - I love this ork, he just looks right. So perfectly old school fantasy. So I better paint him. His sword is a plastic replacement because he was damaged
Plastic Squat - I have three of these but it is very hard to get a good pose on them - this one is the first one I've succeeded with. He is a gunslinging biker type.

Seriously, a couple of points just so you can have an informed debate based on the real reasons that Squats are no longer available. Be warned, it is going to be hard reading for people that like the Squat background.
First of all, Squats were *not* dropped because they were not selling well. There were then, and are now, plenty of other figure ranges that sell in the sort of % quantaties that the Squats pulled down, especially when you look across all of the ranges produced by GW rather than just those for 40K.
No, the reason that the Squats were dropped was because the creatives in the Studio (people like me, Rick, Andy C, Gav etc) felt that we had failed to do the Dwarf 'archetype' justice in its 40K incarnation. From the name of the race (Squats - what *were* we thinking?!?!) through to the short bikers motif, we had managed to turn what was a proud and noble race in Warhammer and the other literary forms where the archetype exists, into a joke race in 40K. We only fully realised what we had done when we were working on the 2nd edition of 40K. Try as we might, we just couldn't work up much enthusiasm for the Squats. The mistake we made then (deeply regreted since) was to leave them in the background and the 'get you by' army list book that appeared. With hindsight, we should have dropped the Squats back then, and saved ourselves a lot of grief later on.
Anyway, the Squats made it into 2nd edition, and since we were doing army books for each of the races, we started to try and figure out what to do with them. Unfortunately we just couldn't figure out a way to update them and get them to work that we felt was good enough. The 'art' of working on an army as a designer is to find the thing that you think is cool and exciting about an army, and work it up into a strong theme. This 'muse' didn't strike any of us, and so, rather than bring out a second-rate product simply re-hashing the old background, we kept doing other army books instead, with stuff we did feel inspired by.
Now, while this was all going on for 40K, we were actually doing some rather good stuff for the Squats in Epic. On this scale there was a natural tendancy to focus on the big 'hand-made' war machines the Squat artisans produced, and this created an army with a feel that was very different to the biker hordes in 40K. However, this tended to reinforce the problems we saw in the Squat background rather than alleviate them, underlining what we *should* have done with the Squats in 40K.
In the end (and it took years to really get to the roots of the problem) this led to a realisation that we were going to have to drop the Squats in their 'Squat' form from the 40K background. There was little point having a major race that we weren't willing to make an army book for, and their inclusion in the background meant that people kept asking us when we'd do a Squat Codex. Instead we decided that we'd write the Squats out of the background by saying that their Homworlds had been devoured by a Tyranid Hivefleet. This would give us the option in the future to return to making a race based ont he Squat archetype for 40K. This race was given the name of Demiurg, and a certain amount of preliminary work was done to get a 'feel' for what the race would be like. At present the only hint of the Demiurg in 40K is the Demiurg spaceship for BFG. However, we do have this race 'in our back pocket' as a possible new race for 40K, or an interesting character model in Inquisitor, or whatever. So far the Demiurg have lost out to other projects, and it may be that their time never actually comes, as they will have to win through on their merits, not simply because we once made some Squat models in the past. At present, I have to say that it is more lilely that they *don't* make the cut than do, as there is a certain predudice these days to simply taking races from Warhammer and cross them over to 40K like we did in the early days, so it may be that the Squats/Demiurg end up remaining a footnote in the history of the 40K galaxy. Only time will tell...
The second point I'd like to make is about 'old moulds'. In the past, Mail Order in the UK and US used to be the place that we kept all of the retired moulds for Citadel Miniatures, and we used to offer a service where you could order any Citadel Mniature ever made from MO. However, there are now so many of these 'back catalogue' miniatures that it is simply impossible to keep all of the old moulds in Mail Order and offer this service. Instead, we pick and choose which back catalogue miniatures are kept available. At present we're still struggling to produce special catalogues for these ranges (in the US there is the 'Phone Book' catalogue with everything in it, while the UK has special 'collectors guides' that are themed round a race). Once we've ironed out the kinks in the way we deal with the range of collectors models we want to keep permenantly available, the plan is to offer up other parts of the back catalogue for limited periods of time. In effect this will divide the back catalogue into three parts: a range of classic models that are permenantly available, a range of classic models we dip into and bring out for a limited release, and a range of retired models that will no longer be sold either because we've decided that they are embarrassingly bad, or because we are no longer allowed to sell them due to licencing agreement changes. So far we're still slowly working on deciding which classic models we want to keep permenantly available, and its going to take several years to work through just those. The old Squat range is most likely to end up as retired models, I have to say, though there is a good chance that the Squat war engines they could simply into the limited release classic range. Once again, only time will tell...
I'll finish off by saying that whatever we decide to do 'officially', there is nothing stopping players with Squat armies from using them, either in Epic or 40k for that matter. There is no GW 'rule' against using old Citadel Miniatures, as long as you use them with exisiting army lists and in a way that won't cause confusion for other players. I recommend taking a positive stand by saying "Have you seen these cool old models? They're called the Squats and GW used to make them back in the late eighties/early nineties. I love 'em, so I count them as Imperial Guard and use them with the current rules..." Put like this I can't imagine that anyone would stop you from using your army.

Head Fanatic"
So it sounds like that paragraph in the back of the new 40k Codex about Squats and the "permanent dsagreement" between the Lords of Terra (i.e. himself, Rick Priestly, Gav Thorpe, and Andy Chambers)- Well Rick has left GW to start Warlord Games now and Mat Ward is now a Lord of Terra in the GWHQ and wants the Squats back.
Well There you go - I didn't think they were a 'joke' personally, but they were a bit half baked and underdeveloped. I like the idea of emphasizing the engineer aspect of the squats and making them tech wizards.
But basically I love the biker look and there will always be room for humour in 40k
As much as anything else, the problems were they handed off substantial elements of the Dwarf archetype to other races - Space Wolves being a prime culprit, as they have huge elements of typical Norse mythology in their imagery.
Thats true mr dysartes - apart from the odd rune here and there the squats don't have much norse to them. And I suppose squat is a daft name on reflection.
These are by no means finished but I thought I might as well post a pic seeing as they won't be done till tomorrow:
Thanks all - monkeytroll I haven't watched that series - isn't he played by the dad from Malcolm in the middle? Yes I can imagine that head attached to a dirty lab coat.
Still not totally decided on stripping any squats - I should probably paint the bikes b4 I do anything else. I've been looking at bob olleys scrunts again as well - much better sculpts but they are larger than GW squats and might not go well together. Anyone seen his texas gunslinger scrunts? They are cool: http://www.collecting-miniatures.com/olley/index.php/Lupus
Can anyone recommend a really Nordic looking space dwarf? I was hoping that there might be a company doing a more modern sculpt.
Here are finished pieces. Maybe I can do better, but they are to a good standard. I need to push myself soon.
That is a really nice group of minis for this round of painting!
I am particularly fond of the Orc. He comes from the BC2 Monster Starter Set that Citadel produced in 1985. My friends and I bought a set (mail order from England). I kept all five of the goblinoid figures including the Orc Champion, which is the model that you are painting. He originally had a morning star.
P.S. I really dig the Squat and the Commissar. Nice minis and an excellent blend of colors. Nothing too overpowering; very natural and very nice!
Hey JB I think I have the vile goblin from that set too.
Thanks for looking guys - here is another one. I thought I better try a little OSL with this one and I think I may have made it just a touch too subtle but well its only like the third time I tried it and I'm pretty happy.
He looks good.
The OSL on the figure looks fine, subtle yes, but it works. Maybe a bit more on the metal floor surrounding the light might draw the attention a bit more...but you know I'm hardly the expert...
Great job, weets. I've never liked those style claws. They don't look sharp enough to do any damage. They just look like tubers to me. Like he's got a glove with yams stuck thru it. lol
On the left is a model I already painted before but I found another one in my box of lead. Then the purestrain genestealer artfully balanced on a pipe - and finally my personal favourite the hybrid - I've been looking forward to painting this one for ages
