Quite, it is a very nice £30 RPG/artbook included in your £250 game!
Oh, this is all so strange. These things are going to be like Unicorns, occasionally glimpsed but mostly spoken of in legend. Perhaps a Unicorn bred with a Carthorse, anyway!
I would be genuinely fascinated by how this sells at "retail" - his resin humans are lapped up at $25 a pop, and this contains much more value than 11 or less of them. It contains more value than the $100 pinups set, or even the pinups set at 50% off!
Is there a sufficient market of comfortably well-off hobbyist-boardgamers that is not currently being fully catered to?

Bioptic - I would be interested in this as well.
I've bought a few of the kits that were sold through the website on the strength of the models alone. I am pretty tempted by the game itself but
~£180 isn't cheap, although the fact it is on offer is a plus.
Does anyone know if the game works as a single player experience? I'm guessing finding other players might be a little tricky and the better half is not the type to get excited by tiny monsters, even if they are as wonderfully deranged as these. It would be good to know that I could get something out of the box besides the modelling side.
Also, does anyone know whether we'll be able to get extra survivor models? Seems a shame to get so much gear and have to try and fit it all on the four in the box. I sense over-encumbrance would become an issue fairly quickly...
Cheers,
Ant

The monsters are AI-based through their monster deck normally anyway as I understand it, so a single player experience is just the normal game with you controlling all the survivors.

The 'single player experience' (stop laughing!) is the only thing that might make me keep the game rather than sell it all off.
Maybe.

Swanpanasia do 2"x2" card sleeves I have a pack to try out but with 1000 odd cards to sleeve I might not bother

ok dont know if i got the quote right but anyhow
im planning to only sleeve the cards as i need to use them 1k is too much to do in one sitting though i think i wont need to do them all in one sitting as i dont think i would use them all (and only need to sleeve the the hit location... ai and resources of the monster im using as well as the gear cards... standard resources to begin with then slowly sleeve the rest as they are needed

Each of the armor kits can make 4 Survivors in the armor from the kit. Thus you will be able to make a total of 32 Survivors. The starting 4 are single pose and the other 28 are customizable and interchangeable.
I bolded and underlined the survivors in the list of contents.

Thanks Piperi, guess thats what I get for ignoring all text and scrolling straight to the pictures. Seeing as you do get so many models, it is looking like better value, at least compared to the other kits on the webstore.
Baragash, Alph - thanks for confirming the single player aspect, it is looking very tempting now... just got to call in some favours or find an organ one can do without and we're good to go.

I think I'm going to cave and get it now, despite having missed all the good value deals, it's only going to get worse?
Quick question though, do the rules for the extra/limited models on the Kingdom Death store come with the models, or does the box game include a bestiary/the cards for them?

Models in the store are not part of KD: Monster- they may eventually become a part of the project after Monster where heroic characters play a role.

Copying over a couple quotes from the N&R thread-
Sinful Hero wrote:" Dice, Promos, Armor Kits, Pinups and your T-Shirts, are all being shipped from our office in NY. It was the only way to make these complicated pick & pack orders fit into our budget. Warehouses charge per pick, usually around 0.50 - 2.00 depending on the place and your deal with them. I also trust us internally to get this right much more so then I do with an external company."

" All of the expansions were designed to be very modular. The Gorm expansion, for example, has rules for you to incorporate it into a campaign two different ways. 1, by simply adding its intro story event to your next year on the timeline. 2. Starting a brand new campaign with the Gorm intro at the very start of your campaign. It has a pretty nasty re-occuring climate story event, that can really change how a new campaign feels. It does not replace anything, its merely added. Your settlement may hunt it, or anything else that is available to them."
Automatically Appended Next Post:
"Sorry. My lips are sealed on shipments until I make my big fulfillment update. All I can say is that, internally we are packing small reward boxes like crazy and that the core game + survivor level rewards are still in transit to their respective global warehouses. My favorite part of the project? Playing with friends and fans during gencon was an absolute blast. In recent memory, the experience I had at Gallery 42 was a tremendous high point. Otherwise I would say, anytime I get to clear other work away and get back to creating. I still just love that part!"

Quick Wave 1 Shipping Clarifications
We are currently packing “Small Reward Boxes” in our office. We wanted to take some extra time before making an official update to ensure our process was in order. Adam will make a bigger Kickstarter update when he is ready.
- First and foremost, we are still troubleshooting our process. Our office has been converted to a mail room and all hands are on deck to ensure everyone gets their rewards in a timely fashion with as little screw ups on our part as possible (they just cost us time and money, both of which are tight!). There will be mistakes, so just bare with us. Wait until your order arrives and then submit a ticket to support@kingdomdeath.zendesk.com for help.
- Survivor Level backers get t-shirts, as do Resin Beta Backers that upgraded their pledge to include a survivor. Extra survivor units, added via the pledge manager do not get t-shirts, nor do any black Friday backers from 2014. This was clearly indicated on the pledge manager and also on our store during the black Friday promotions (we ran out of shirts!).
- Backers getting physical rewards, will get a White Speaker and Twilight Knight gift, on a per pledge basis.
- White Speakers are being packed by us with wave 1 small reward boxes.
- Twilight Knights are included in survivor level reward boxes that are shipping during wave 2, with the core game. There was a factory mix up, that's where they ended up. Not a big deal.
- Backers that did not get a survivor level reward, are getting their Twilight Knights now during wave 1. We are aware of many packages from day 1 and 2 that went out without them. We are on it. Don’t worry about it.
Thanks!!!

It has been a while since I looked at the full list of add-ons you could get though...
I think most things are?
For example, the "Pinups" are usable in the game, but are really just 'sexy' versions of existing survivors - so not strictly necessary unless you're a completionist.
Like many of us are!

vegeta365 wrote:For those of us who are only just finding out about such an amazing product, is everything that was in the KS able to be used in the game?
At some level, yes.
The Kingdom Death Game and its expansions (Monsters and Survivor Armor sets) are 100% usable in the game, obviously.
The various Pinups "count as" Survivors in the game, and may include a bonus game card; I'd rate them as 90% designed for looks / 10% shoehorned gameplay.
But really, everything looks beautiful; the only question is what it feels like when you play it.

Thanks to you both. Now to look back over everything on the KS and see what I would like/can afford (given I have just moved house lol) and then see what I am able to buy right now after missing the KS 2 years ago. I don't think there's much to worry about as they are coming from different sources - so if you've received the 'main box' notification before your 'small rewards' notification, it should be OK for now.
Maybe?
Also - who is the 'sender' in all of these UPS notifications for the 'main box'?

Just the USA so far their shipment was scheduled to arrive first (October 1st - October 15), and seems to have breezed through customs a lot faster than expected The shipments to the other fulfilment centres in the EU, Canada & Australia were due in later (October 15 - November 1st) so if we also get as lucky with customs (sadly unlikely) it will be another couple of weeks, and more likely a month or more sob

Everything seems accounted for aside from the bonus White Speaker and Twilight Knight, which I assume will be in phase 3? Did anyone else not get their White Speaker and Twilight Knight along with the phase 2 core game?

Nobody should be getting White Speaker or Twilight Knight with their Wave 2 core games.
Everybody should be getting them as part of Wave 1, but some will be getting either/both of them as part of Wave 3.

Oh? I thought Poots was mailing White Speaker (& Twilight Knight) in Wave 1. But maybe the TK was moved to Survivor Rewards for Survivor bakcers? I know my TK wasn't shipped with my White Speaker. *sigh* So much complexity...
On the plus side...
I GOT MY CORE BOX!
It's an awesome amount of stuff with a ton of minis. And what's cool is that it looks like the bonus TK and WS figure into the core game. Nice.
Sadly, the shipping wasn't done with near the care of the game itself, as mine was shipped in a cut-down double-core packing box, with no padding or spacing. As a result, the game box got damaged, my inner tray is torn in multiple places, and my rulebook got dinged. Gotta say, that was kinda disappointing for how nice everything should be.
Seeing all the sprues and tiny parts to be assembled kinda makes me wonder just what I was thinking when I ordered all of this stuff.

Everybody should be getting the white speaker 'gift' with wave 1 (straight from Poots)
If you backed at survivor level your 'gift' twilight knight will be in wave 2 (from the shipment house) somewhere in the survivor box, I think
If you didn't get the survivor your 'gift' twilight knight will be in wave 1 (straight from Poots)

The preorders (which were up for a while post gencon) have now closed so you can't get hold of anything without resorting to the secondary market, the plan appears to have the launch of the retail game around black Friday (get yourself on the mailing list here http://shop.kingdomdeath.com/products/kingdom-death-monster-preorder-special)
In terms of the KS exclusives the only game minis were Adam & Anna Survivors of Death. Everything else is intended to be released for sale in some way at some point
Of the non-gaming stuff the pinups will all hit the store at some point for general sale,
the 4 messengers and other specials like holiday nico will probably show up on special occasions (conventions and perhaps special days like Halloween, Xmas etc)
the collaborations with soda pop miniatures candy & cola will hit general release (as soda pop is putting the chibi twilight knight on general release)
The collaborartion with Studio Mcvey, Kara Black I'm not sure on, that might be KS exclusive
As to the expansions again they will hit release at some point, it could be at the same time as the main game, it could be more slowly over time, but everything should be released

Got my first game in last night. Went pretty well, aside from 3 survivors getting killed by the tutorial lion.
The only problem now is keeping everything organized. The box holds sleeved cards just fine, but coming up with enough sleeves is a pain. I think I've exhausted my area's supply of FFG green sleeves. I'd like to sleeve the settlement events but I can't find sleeves in their size and I don't think they'd fit back in the box if I did. Also, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the board and manual. They're heavy and I'm not sure the card dividers will hold up their weight. I'm already carrying a box of minis with it, I don't really want to have to carry the book separately as well.
Oh well, logistical problems like that happen with any game with lots of parts. Doesn't detract from the game itself though. I'm going to try to get a campaign started on Saturday.

RULES QUESTION, which didnt make sense to me, from the tutorial of the lion fight it says you roll to to the lion and and wounds you remove a card off its AI deck and dont look at it. But then it goes on to say you gotta look at wound cards to see if they trigger on a crit or a fail....??? so what is it.

You have to look at the Hit Location card to see if it has a critical or failure condition.

Yep, I listed my survivor extras box with a buy it now of $150 and it sold in about 4 hours. The game contents are going to keep me busy for quite a while that the extras would just sit around and take up space. There's something about KD and CMON that people will drop a lot of cash on the extra plastic.

Post by: Ramos Asura
Aha! That picture actually solved my problem! Couldnt figure out for the life of me where the two "extra" cloth bits
All of the bits for each mini are on the same sprue. They all share a letter/number in common, so carefully look at the fine print on the sprue to help you along. For example, The Butcher is "F".
As far as its assembly, it does fit, but doesn't "lock in" like the arms and other stuff does. There is a very particular way that the curves mesh. Just takes a little bit of finesse to make it right!

At least as far as the starter survivors and the Lion go, it's relatively straight forward (save for the previously mentioned bit of Beardy's cloth). So you know... Iffin you were REALLY wanting to get moving on a game you could conceivably start

Now to clear off the two half built Wrath of Kings starters, Trollblood cavalry, Trollkin Sorcerers, Kriel Warriors, Firebreathers, about two dozen Confrontation orcs and dwarfs, a half dozen large Mierce figures, and a myriad of many other figures laying on my dining room table waiting to be finished getting put together.
Then maybe I can play it.

I'm pretty sure the feather thing is a hair ornament that goes in the hole on top of her head (see the intimacy event page in the book). I couldn't figure out what went in the hole on the back either, and I didn't have any spare pieces left after assembling them.

Rules question
So the white lion mauled I think it was, someone in my group hitting them with a Damage 3 attack, in a location that already had a light wound. So 1 damage to heavy wound, then next point of damage he rolled on the sever injury chart. Should he have had to roll a 2nd time on the same sever injury chart?

According the GenCon demos I watched, yes. The game doesn't play around with the murder. :-p

I don't believe that's right. On page 29 under Severe Injuries and Death (Bold in original text as well)
Roll once on the table each time the hit location is damaged even if the amount of damage is over 1.

Yes, thats the way. As soon as damage covers all boxes, all remaining damage for the attack is reduced to a single roll on the Severe Injuries table. Now in the same line of questions, heres one for you guys. When an attack is speed 2 (basic lion claw, for example) and it wounds the chest twice- each time for one damage- do I roll twice on the severe chart if the boxes are already filled? I figured two hits to the chest= two rolls on the chart. Or is it just one roll? ============== My brothers and I got our game going and got into the first actual Lion Hunt after the tutorial... Needless to say, we got chewed up quite a bit. Terrible dice meant that we couldnt wound it to save our lives! Two survivors took brain damage from its roar (very low sanity survivors...) and ended up getting disorders. One, who later got a broken rib and was disemboweled, became terrified of monsters and would take extra brain damage from intimidation. The other... he became immortal xD Eventually we managed to kill it... EVENTUALLY. Still totally loving it, though

My understanding is hits are resolved independently (order at survivor discretion), so under that circumstance, it would be 2 rolls on the table.
I assembled my prologue minis and got the box all set up. Was hoping to get my first game in tonight, but life got in the way. Hopefully tomorrow night.

We actually faired rather well, one guy took the brunt of evwrything and ended up dead. But throwing those founding stones for the auto hit and auto crit is insane. Right off the bat our first crit was the one that spills the lions entrails and he has to roll at the start of his turns and could suffer a wound. Also got alot of extra resources from the crits

Forgot to mention I got my Wave 1 shipment notice today (just White Speaker, Beyond the Wall Resin and T-Shirt). Looks like they're in the final stretches now. Automatically Appended Next Post: Well, that worked out well. Life suddenly got out of the way so I was able to do the first showdown and settlement tonight. Decided to name my survivors Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frida, so of course my settlement is named Sweden.
I really like the tension of the showdowns. I thought I was cruising to an easy win and then a missed damage opportunity on the final AI card left one guy with 2 severe wounds and 4 blood tokens with only 1 survivor left to activate for the round. Had to sit there and figure out if I wanted to use a founder stone for the autokill or take a chance on missing his attacks and giving the lion another activation. Got lucky and killed the lion without losing anyone or taking any permanent effects and just one founder stone used, but I can already see how many tough decisions are going to be a part of this game.

My rulebook was missing those pages as well. I just received a replacement rulebook with my Wave 1 shipping that included my resin models.

Got mine, assembled the starter minis and tried a test game. Pretty brutal.
The initial flurry of stones netted me some extra resources and the effect that made the lion lose one movement - which as it turns out saved the game for me.
The lion did some damage, and the next round my last attack was one of my survivors biting off the lion's penis. The rest of the match was the lion dragging the person around gnawing on her until she died while my other survivors chased the lion, eventually killing it.
Got a fair number of crits and some nice extra resources.

As far as modeling goes, is anyone planning on making all the parts interchangeable? I think I have figured out a way. I'm using magnets for torso to legs and also torso to arms, but then I'm pinning the heads and hands with small wire cut from wire cloth. I cant recall the magnet diameter at the moment, but the drill bit that it fits into the hole is 5/64.
edit: just did some research and found the size I had ordered. It is 1/16 Diamter x 1/32 Thickness. Hole drilled with a 5/64 drill bit. Sometimes it fits snug, other times it needs a dab of superglue. I need to get me some plastic tweezer though cause its a bitch trying to put the magnet in the hole full of superglue using metal instruments, lol.

Some Rules questions!
So when one of your people cant go out on the next hunt and you have to create a new character do they gain a founding stone as a new character?
We just encountered the White lion mood Ground fighting, its the most OP thing we have encountered... and a founding stone would have been real handy.

I have a deluxe survivor pledge with one of every add on (resin and plastic). I received the base game with the survivor pledge box so far.
I have seen multiple people putting their promos (messenger minis, kara black, candy/cola, pinups) on ebay already. Were the resins and plastic extras being shipped at the same time or are we getting these later? Should I be worried if I haven't received them yet?

No you should not.
If you ordered resins you're at the end of the "wave 1" queue along with people who ordered extra armor kits. That "wave" of orders are the most complex and being packed by Adam and his staff in NY. They began with the simplest orders (just plastic promos to work out the kinks in the process), then the international orders (as those would spend longer in transit) and then onto the larger and more complex orders as mentioned. The core box was "wave 2" which started after wave 1 but because they were dramatically simpler orders to process (nearly "put in box, slap on label" simplicity) they were dispatched faster, hence the confusing naming.
I suspect Adam was not expecting the speed at which things happened with wave 2 as his estimates were still another couple of weeks before shipping. That they're not done with Wave 1 says that their own estimates were a bit too optimistic. I do hope they finish up this week though, as I too am waiting for my own package. Lots of armor kits, and yet somehow I worry I may need more...

Page 49 of the rulebook says that all monsters are 50mm except the Phoenix which is 100mm.
However, I don't see 5 50mm bases in the Survivor rewards for the King's Men so I'm not sure if that's just "you only need the one for the game on the 50mm" or something else.

I did the same thing and given their size, I don't think they would look odd for display. However, for gameplay purposes when given the choice between images of the prototype or the final printed rulebook, I'm going to side with the latter as being the authority. That there are 6 monsters that would use the 50mm base (i.e. - not the Phoenix) and 6 50mm bases is also a sign that this is the case.
The red herring is the King's Men we got as bonuses since I at least didn't get 5 50mm bases for them.

Nor did I. I suppose it makes more sense for them to be large since it allows more base contact points for survivor attacks, It just seemed odd to me to put a King's Hand on that giant base

Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the models as i've put together a variety so far.
As a general rule before getting into specifics, i'm pleased with the mold lines or lack thereof. I haven't found many and those I did see were very easily cleaned up.
Most disappointing was the White Lion. I like the overall feel of it, it's a great 'creepy' lion-ish monster, but have some issues with the pieces. It would have taken more work and patience than I had at the time to fix the seams around its face, and the rear pieces simply cannot be put together together without leaving large gaps, some in visible places. Good news is the gaps will be easy to fix with green stuff later (although I do not think I am going to worry about green stuffing the gap through the reproductive bits on the bottom).
The Twilight Knight went together easily and looks good. The definition and general quality is lower than everything else I've gotten, which is odd. I seem to recall that this was his first plastic 'test' piece so maybe that explains it.
I thought the pinup regeneration suit would have awfully obvious gaps, given the skintight nature of the suit itself, but was pleasantly surprised. It also introduced me to the fact that the sprue designers are not afraid to break things into itty bitty pieces. Her head / hair were separate, but the sculpt and careful assembly hides the seam well. A seam I expected to be awful - right between her butt cheeks and along part of her back - actually is invisible once assembled. Minor seams can be found in the front of the model - again, many tiny pieces - but overall this was the first mini that I was really happy with how it looked.
Lastly, the Butcher. Ye gods the tiny pieces. One piece of advice to those of you who haven't put him together yet - build and attach the legs to him before putting his 2-part cloak on. My ideal order, in hindsight, would be attaching the legs, then the multiple itty-bitty shoulderguard bits, then the cloak pieces, the arms, and the 3 head bits. I was tremendously impressed with the detail on the pieces and with how well this one went together. A few seams are visible on the final product but nothing a paintjob can't cover. The shoulderguard and head, while both being made of some pretty darned tiny bits, are worth the effort to get juuust right. Once finished he is a real mean looking figure with tons of detail and he looks spectacular whether you're looking at him from table height or right up close. He has gotten me really excited to work on more of the models.
Overall after those assemblies and looking through the sprues I'm very happy with what I got. The game itself looks like a lot of fun once I have a chance to get to it, but really the modeling aspect alone is going to give me hours and hours of enjoyment.

Have to agree. I put the shoulder and head on before attaching the cloak on the Butcher, and he came out great.
I'm having issues with the base survivors having large gaps. I also tried putting them on the stone face bases without pinning, which was foolish.

Probably assembled about a dozen of the models and did reasonably well I think. I had to refer to images online for some to get an idea of where parts went but other than that they go together pretty well.
Then I looked at the Phoenix and even though I have two of them, this was my reaction to doing it without directions:
So props for getting through it spiralingcadaver!
Overall I'm quite happy with what I've gotten and I actually want more armor kits. Granted, some of that enthusiasm may diminish when I finally get all the extras I did order... /pine for Wave 1 some more

Pretty close, these bases are all latex molds w/ plaster- broke them up a bit. Link.
I needed to fix a fair number of noses since they're tiny, but didn't really care if a lot looked broken since they're stone, etc.
I'm also sculpting a full terrain set of my own- have a head and a few plates of faces... if it goes well, I already like the game enough that I'd move on to a table.

This game is exceptionally unforgiving if you make a mistake (or just have a string of bad luck), but also requires you to capitalize on every lucky roll the game gives you. I'm finding it extremely difficult to keep from taking the periodic mulligan.

We've instituted a house rule after a string of bad luck involved 9 of our survivors dying to random events over 2 or 3 years.
You can now spend all survival (min 2) to prevent death to random event.
It means that new survivors and returning ones stretched to their limit still die, but it does prevent that survivor with 5 survival from coming back from a good fight and then stubbing his toe to death on a 1 or whatever.
So far, it's felt like a good compromise where things are lethal, but, like in combat, you have a chance to "dodge" it.

The big point to the game is that survivors are very mortal. Your 'lives' are the people within the settlement. Sure you can have a single survivor and get really attached to them, but your settlement is what is meant to go on.
Plus, your items carry over between characters (barring special circumstances). Sometimes, if you become unreasonably crippled, it's better to retire and just make another character from the "life pool". Also form tons of babbies when you can.

Yeah, we've definitely learned to consider population as a resource, but going through a run of losing 2 survivors to actual fights but 9 to random events was pretty frustrating. We were doing decently well, except the part where we couldn't maintain a population because of random.

Yes, thank you for that electronic survivor sheet.
I finished painting up my Starting survivors. I decided to go with a clean look on the base, to fit the "less is more" overall look of the game. I added the colors to differentiate among the players, in classic board game style.

EDIT: Also to add to the discussion of the random mulligan, this game is to damn long. Im not saying I dislike it, but for the average joe, who only has a game night once a week for a moderate amount of time (4-5 hours) It feels very important to me and my group that we exercise that kind of leeway to assure we even get a chance to finish this.

Yeah, Ive been seeing that a lot lately saying that the Random Events will lose you the game faster than any monster you come up against and that there's not much to be done to prevent or mitigate them and that worries me.
I'm definitely not as sure about the game now as I was at Gencon.

Yeah, in re-reading through the rulebook, those d10 tables seem really nasty, for no obvious reason. A lot of those results reduce population and BAM!, that's it. Unless you can defeat a pretty badass fighter.
It seems to me that all of these random tables might be a roll 2d10, pick your favorite. Not re-roll if you dislike the result, but instead roll 2, see both possible results, and then pick the most favorable / least unfavorable.
Sure, 1% of the time, you get the Settlement-destroying "1" result, but most of the time, you should do OK to not have to keep starting over.
Even if the intent is to be Dwarf Fortress hard, I'm not sure that works for a RPG. Most GMs save TPKs for gross stupidity, rather than merely bad luck.

Its kind of frustrating honestly. I like everything ive seen so far and really enjoy playing. Saturday we played for 5 hours, only made it through 1 settlement phase, 2 hunt phases and 2 showdowns. I cant honestly see an end in sight and my mindset is, why even play then.. I will most likely end up playing this game alone an hour here and there once my kids go to bed.

I understand difficult games like, for example, Pandemic where even the best plans can slowly slip down the hill to a loss, but this whole roll once lose 10 3+ hour sessions of progress that kinda kills enthusiasm really quickly in a group.

Yeah... I think the game is slightly too punishing in core format, not in a vacuum, but in the context of people needing to get together and play sessions. Even if they're not horribly attached to a settlement, the loss of a ton of progress due to a 1/10 chance is pretty demoralizing.

Exactly, I was 106% on board listening to the grueling nature of the game. I love how its difficult, I feel like I'm contradicting myself for hating the very nature of the thing I like about the game..
Its hard to explain if you haven't experienced it I think.. but I dont see this game seeing much play time just after a few sessions...

I don't mind difficult per se - we ground through multiple consecutive TPKs when SDE originally came out, but the game was charming enough that we were always getting closer to winning, and the setup investment of each one-and-done game was very low.
In KD:M, weighing the cost starting over will factor into how many random "bad things" I'm willing to accept.
As a game, I'm not sure there's supposed to be an end point aside from becoming strong enough to defeat the Phoenix (in the base game) after the requisite time has passed. It's an odd structure for a multi-session game, but at least the calendar has an end point.

I'm 7 lantern years in now and I've just in the past couple hunts finally gotten over getting attached to particular survivors. Once I started focusing on the gear and less on the individual, I found the frustration factor going way down.
I really liken this game to an old school video game that would drive me nuts to the point of throwing the controller, but then after calming down and taking a break, coming back focused and ready to go.
That said, I've refined my mulligan strategy to be, if the roll is going to destroy my enjoyment of the game, then I'll re-roll. For example, if I'm on a level 2 hunt and a random event causes my best fighter to run screaming into the darkness, knowing it will be a TPK, then I'm for sure rerolling. I'd rather keep enjoying the game than let one bad roll cascade to me putting it away and never picking it up again.

Agreed with Triple9, it took a bit to get over losing a favorite, but you can. The problem is for the things that wreck your hunt or even whole settlement, but it's also hard to find a way around those without radically altering the game, which is why I think that eventually a mulligan rule might be in order, but we're still playing with the survival to cancel... I think one or the other could work, and we're doing the small scale one as a gradual prevention instead of occasionally deciding things should be redone, partially because it's more stable/less open to a so-called slippery slope of circumventing bad stuff.

I would have to agree with the surface assessment that there's just a lot of randomness that can completely derail everything. The game is set a very high challenge level for certain, and not all of it is entirely "fair" either where there was nothing you did wrong or could have done to avoid it. As thematic as that may be, it's still frustrating for people and I can certainly see tables being flipped when you get to lantern year 19 and a bad series of hunt events depletes your settlement. That's a lot of time invested by a player group, potentially near a hundred hours, to just go "oops, we botched that die roll...oh well." I suspect a great variety of mulligans and snapshots of settlements to rewind to like loading a saved game will be popular, if not the designer's intent.
On the flip side, as a cooperative experience it is much easier to ratchet down the difficulty to everyone in the group's liking. You don't have to marginalize someone else's play experience like you do with many other games that have a "versus" component to make things more fun. For example, if you're playing SDE with someone who is a terrific Consul and is always wiping the floor with the heroes, making the game more fun for the heroes is likely going to make it less fun for the Consul. That scenario doesn't happen with KD:M because all the players are on the same side and it's you guys versus the game. Just because the game's default difficulty is "Nightmare" doesn't mean you can't move your own slider down notch (or two or more).
Given that there's no such thing as "competitive KD:M" or a tournament circuit, it seems less concerning for people to adjust the rules as they want; we all make house rules for our various games after all. Where we clamor for consistent rules is for those games with strangers to avoid having to hash those rules out all the time. However, I'm not sure KD:M is a game you'd ever be playing with random people in a campaign setting; just the nature of the game implies you've met these people before at some point and worked this out. I think that's a core part of Adam's design vision really, that this is a shared experience by the group and deciding how brutal or not the experience is going to be is part of the bonding as a group to play "our" campaign.
Now, I can see a world where you do one-shot challenges and showdowns with strangers randomly just for fun such as at a convention or just to fill time on various gaming nights, but just doing a showdown removes most of the arbitrary death/difficulty of the other campaign phases. It can still be insanely difficult and there can still be random deaths you can't do anything about, but it's less bothersome to me because that isn't "John died off-stage", we all know that he got eaten by an antelope.

It's a good thing there isn't some kind of scoring mechansim after each year. Could you just imagine?
Wait, scratch that. The game doesn't need another step and calculation for people to gamify.

Hey there :-)
I had the same issue, but my package arrived without the tracking number ever becoming active.
On topic:
I think I will enjoy this game playing it solo, a game as hard as this will become frustrating for people with less time (to put into one single game) or patience and it will ruin evenings lol.
You could come up with some house rules (↑↑↓↓←→←→ BA) to bypass some of the frustratingly bad luck your group encounters :-P

My group is loving the game, and we are enjoying the luls of people dying. We are trying to figure out how we can get another game day in to actual see this through.
Our 2nd Settlement phase event we drew Plague... well of course we have no blood letting or amonia. So we all die.. Thanks...
Trying to find the balance of innovations and settlement buildings vs buying gear and weapons .
So quick rules question, Do the monsters turn to face the person attacking them? Or would they just sit there and let 2-3 attackers stand behind them and attack from the blind spot and never turn around?? I assume if the Hit location says on a miss or reflex basic attack then they turn around?

Not unless there is a reaction that would cause them to move/attack.

Are the Messengers or any of the other Promos?

I think the list of extra 1 shot/promo scenarios is
adam & anna
aya
Allison the twilight knight
messenger of courage
messenger of humanity
messenger of first story (pretty sure even though it's not in my notes)
messenger of the spiral path
paul the survivor
snow the savior
candy &cola
kara black

A little off topic, but I'm a preorder guy and have yet to receive my box.
Are they're any colored art pics of the Phoenix in the rulebook or on the cards or at least a harrowing description of it or am I just free to go to town on this thing color wise?
(FYI I usually try to stay close to the fluff with a gameworld like this so I am aware that I could just go to town any way, also I'm looking into demoing this thing to a few groups so the closer to the art it looks the better.)
60720
Post by: OrlandotheTechnicoloured
I'm pretty sure we've seen at least some phoenix art during the updates, here's one I found but I'm sure there will be more but feel free to go to town on it anyway (after all like all the monsters it comes in 3 power levels and we all know from video gaming that a different power level means a different colour, so if the phoenix in the art does not suit you paint what does, and then it can be the level 2 phoenix while the one in the book is a level 1 or level 3)

An update for those of you who are worried about a balanced, slightly easier (but not hero mode) version of the game. We've been refining our house rule, and have been playing with the following cost to prevent death (and all associated positive outcomes) in random events:
All survival, min. 2, and skip the next fight (hunt or otherwise).
It's felt pretty thoroughly balanced.

Yeah. I just can't see myself having the time to dedicate it before the next decade is up so I figure I have better places to put that cash and since it went for a substantial amount I'm ok with it. And I've still got more stuff to offload once the additional expansions come in. I'm keeping my promo pin-ups I ordered but that's pretty much it.

I understand that Hulksmash; as I look around my ever-growing mountain of shame I should probably be thinking along those lines more. As it is I find myself thinking I did not order anywhere near enough armor kits during the KS, which means the mountain will likely rise higher.
Question for the US-based backers: How long after you received your wave 1 shipping email until the tracking info updated? I received my email Thursday, but as of yet FedEx hasn't updated any information and still has it as "pending." I figured I'd poll you guys to try and establish if that became the norm and the box will show up today/tomorrow or if they just pre-printed my label in anticipation of shipping it out this week. I could obviously ask KD, but that's just another thing they'd have to respond to which slows down everyone else who doesn't have their stuff and also the build guides that I want much more than yet more mountain materials.

Didn't set up the cards in the tray before my first play through, spent at least half an hour looking for cards.
After using those dividers, however, this has to be one of the prettiest in box games I've ever owned.
Got through the initial hunt with no losses. Next lion hunt we lost an axe to a hunt event (damn fragile rule) and two survivors (to decapitation and a rib to the heart). Our third survivor suffered a spiral fracture for permanent -2 strength and has to miss the next hunt.
I think I love this game

I have a complicated set with 1 of each add on in both resin and plastic. I got my notification and it's in fedex's hands right now. It looks like they may be doing some of the more complicated orders right now (makes sense to get your stuff sooner if you spent a crap ton more).
Some have had items show up without a notice or tracking number too. If you are worried drop poots an email as he has always been great to work with (although I'm sure he is buried in work right now).

If you're overseas, I'd start be worried about 5 weeks after you got your shipping notice; 1 week for the order to actually have been picked up and then the standard month for delivery.
My tracking number began moving shortly after my post; literally 16 minutes based on FedEx's site. FedEx estimates that it will take them another 4 days to deliver it, or 3 times as long as the Postal Service themselves would take. I know it's their game on expectations management and that it is likely to be here Thursday (only a day slower than USPS, which makes sense for SmartPost), but it amuses me that in their efforts to hedge their bets they make themselves look dramatically worse than just mailing things.

The book is about all I've had the chance to look at so far and... it is gorgeous! The progression through is also really well done, though I do want a second copy (or an app) as this is going to get so much use with all the events and tables in here! I suspect a lot of this will start to be written up into little generator tools to avoid damage to the book
