Hello, hello! I wasn't doing anything Nerd related today but ended up 'just priming' some things..... and then you know how it goes "Well if i've got the stuff out i may as well do that bit more...." so I really got some paint down to start the Zone Mortalis tiles
first I used The Army Painter Plate metal primer to spray all the flooring areas without the walls being touched as it would've melted then i used old airbrushy and sprayed primer black over the walls, when dried i grabbed the light grey green and roughly sprayed them all over then mixed in some 'sand' to lighten the mix then chucked in some white to give the middle of the panels a squirt, not entirely sure how else to detail the actual wall panels now? ideas people?
no more words left so pic time eh!
a pile of tile
and now some normal images
so next I'll do the lights on the bottom of the walls with a nice yellow glow and probably airbrush a more worn colour over the metal flooring?
Thanks again for the comments guys! I was going to airbrush a wash over the whole lot of the tiles but I ran out of time today but I ran out of time for a good reason! yep, I finished the Shark troops! and they look good!, well, I like the look anyway! the best bits I like are the tribal marks on the armour I haven't taken pics of every one but hopefully Whaley can just let you know what they're like when he gets them!
here's the lot of the boys
and some of the markings on the helmets
a few shots of some individuals
I also rather excitedly started two rhinos for my own force
Damo, fantasrtic work on the lot of these guys!! Totally bad ass looking dudes. You nailed that carcharadon scheme, which is no surprise and the reds jump out nice and warm in the midst of black grey and bronze. Power sword looks real cool too. Interesting effect. Molten. Ill have to try that someday. ANYwho, great job man. Makes me wanna grab my brush and paint. You inspire me brother!
Happy for whale, though you shouldve put a green base rim on one, cuz he deserves it.
Cheers BB
You need to unplug the tanks , they are glowing hot
The space sharks are great as well, excellent freehand. I think they need a really laid back member of the squad who wears flowered lays and has a turtle icon on his helmet. He can be the chaplain and keep everyone in a fervor by being sooooo over the top mellow.
Whatever his real name is he can insist on being called "chaplain dude"
Awesome stuff damo! Love the freehand, looks like decals it's that neat. The ocular lens on the rocket guy is one of the best I've seen and the power sword looks like it's red hot. Once again , I bow in awe..
The board looks great too. I don't know how you get so much done!
Camkierhi wrote:Some of the most brilliant work I have seen. Awesome. Those marines look amazing, you are very lucky Whaley....
Tanks looking good, really nice red going on there.
Cheers Cam! I do hope Whaley does indeed like them, and it was nice to get back to the reds!
Dr H wrote:Good work NF. Like the sharks. The tribal marks are really well done.
Interested to see how the shading on the tanks come out in the final result.
DrH with all the fiddly small details you have been doing lately how could I not try and do small fiddly painting!?
dantay_xv wrote:Those space sharks are awesome, and I love the richness on the reds of your rhinos!
Great work. Is one of the Astra Carcharadons named Nerdy??
Ummm yes one is named Nerdy thought it'd be funny!

I think that you and I bebop both have similar skills in regards to certain models and ideas which is probably why we both fawn over each others painting but i really do love your chipping!

Thank you Theo! I like the notion of that Chappy and if you think the tanks are glowing now.....
monkeytroll wrote:Those sharks are awesome, great tribal work on them Lovely start on the red tanks too.
Why thank you dude! I really like the tribal work too it works on them I think nicely! and the tanks will get love soon!

Hey San thanks man, I certainly do enjoy my red lenses i can't paint blues yet but I can paint a lense! lol and i can't paint squad markings but give me a pretty design and i'm set!
Haha, I find it amazing that people can write, so well at such a yiny scale, and you deserve to have one of them named after you! The freehand tribal markings are truly outstanding, how did you get your hands to stay so steady?
Also the turtle is called Crush, dude Crush!! My wee man loves Finding Nemo!! But always makes me skip the very beginning.
They look great! Very excited to get them, and I am lucky to do so. Glad to see some of your tanks getting done, and glad to see you got a refreshing wind after the sharks.
Indeed. Excellent work. The freehand is really what makes them for me. I like the ZM board as well. It's much bigger than it appears in the pics, and the Space Shark in the pic looks so lonely and dwarfed by the huge walls.
Wooooooooooooowwwwww..... Those sharks look AMAZING, nerd
Apologies on not posting sooner- prepping for adepticon was crazy! Now I return to my irregularly unscheduled postings!
I really cant wait to see these guys in person. The gray turned out awesome and the lenses (particularly on that ML marine) are jaw dropping!
I particularly like the tribal markings on the helmets... Really gives them a very Pacific Islander-esque feel. One of my favorite marines has to be the one drawing his blade. really really cool pose!
Oh... and Im worried that the Sergeant's dental plan wont cover him.... hes got a particularly nasty set of pearly whites!
Glad to see you giving attention to your own stuff, and I really must echo the sentiment that they're glowing hot! Really super looking!
I would lay the wall panels on their side and spray a nice big coat of brown ink/wash on them, letting it settle in the cracks. Then do the same with black for some good grime. While you wait for those stages to dry, stack more stuff on the dogs.
More red! and even some white I finished the red part on the two rhino's and got a bit done on another attempt at painting white for my Sang Priests. coming along well I think haven't had a chance to do what Dave recommended with my ZM boards yet due to poor weather, but I will indeed heed the advice from someone I trust and admire as soon as I am able!
but until then, here's some wip of the rhino's
And now for some white work, I tried something different and went along my normal paint style by base coating, washing then highlighting again. I used a secret weapon grey/blue wash and mixed white in with it until i got to just white.gotta finish him nd then do the termie priest
thoughts? should have 'em done next week then I'll do Whaleys Razorback and BigH's bare headathon
Those rhinos just scream off the page Nerdy... very impressive. Is there a bit of pink mixed in with the white on the Apoth? Looks like there's a very subtle pink/blue thing going on.
AH thanks guys! happy you like the rhinos they've been sitting around for literally years on my shelf and I keep putting off trying to play a game as I had/have no transport for my troops but once they're finished i might be tempted to try! after thy get done I might then do my Baal and normal predator! fun fun fun
I quite like how my priest is turning out too, no pinks or anything else just the wash and the whites so far, I do have a new laptop so the colours may be a bit off at the moment and speaking of new laptop if anyone else is on skype look me up and we'll chat that includes you Kingcracker
Very nice Rhino's, you do know what they say though right?
Rhino's are a gateway transport, before you know it, it's Land Raiders and Cestus Assault Rams. Then you wake up covered in left over sprues wondering where it all went wrong.

Anyone seriously considering adding Nerd on skype keep in mind that THIS is the sort of thing he usually gets up to on a quiet Friday evening... (Sorry not sorry, you know I love you really haha) xxx
Bwahahaha! that picture is pure Nerd love! only those I care about see and remember that image! something in me thinks they WANT it to be burnt into their retinas? but keep in mind this year is yet to see the Nerdcademy award third prize I've got some freaky ideas already
but before I show you my amazingly manly body I will lull you into that false sense of security by showing you some work in progress of my Rhinos got the lower half weathered and dry bushed with balor brown to simulate dust and dirt and a start on the bones, not much more to do i'm just outta time again
Oh and yes if you do look me up on skype i'm Nerdfest on there too with the same avatar
also babysitting over the Easter weekend so I got a couple of shots of the kids....
Looks great Damo! Weathering looks really cool too. And the bonessssss. Super cool touch. Very macabre.which i suppose is quite fitting! Are you going for a ceramic look on the weathered scratched areas or are you filling them in later with metal? Either way it looks good. Looking forward to finished product and an army pic
Nice Rhino's Nerdy ! Weathering is pretty smart looking on that red !
I go away for a bit and he's an armour expert too ……. !
AND you are now way ahead on the Zone Hulk, I'll get some of mine done this week, if i get the Defiler built , and the tanks finished, and the new 10 man squad fully built , and the dwarfs finished …………….
Thanks guys, if I add up the time I actually sat down with them *9-5.7x 42 carry the 1 %6* they haven't really taken too long at all :-) the highlighting is only on the top half of the vehicles and the lower gets a darker red with the chips and dirt which seems to be working in a good way for the aesthetics of the force! it does make me a little eager to assemble and paint the StormRaven I have which has also been languishing for years on my shelf! :-)
and snrub, Nerdwench doesn't mind at all, she in fact took the picture :-) she knows what i'm like by now, after 6 years together if she didn't like it she would have well and truly left me! 6 years! crikey I should probably see if she'd be willing to be Mrs Nerdfest soon shouldn't I!?
You could fabricate a ring out of a rhino cupola, paint it gold, and give it to her. Make sure you highlight it and freehand some sappy crap on the inside. She'd be so overcome with romantic feelings, she couldn't help but say yes!*

You had better ask her now you've advertised it on TinterWeb !
Gitsplitta wrote: You could take another glamor pic with the ring artfully decorating an appropriate appendage...
wow. ... Fk it, man. Do it.
Now I am just silly enough *just* to do that! Rhino cupola may be a tad uncomfortable though? I'm sure something will come up I can use................
I still have the plastic hobbit ring from The Lord of the rings box set unprimed if you want it .
Seriously guys if anything he's going to put the ring on a pillow stacked on top of the dogs . Of course being in Australia wedding rings probably attract some really bizarre poisonous marsupial with the head of a lama, body of a squid, fangs of a goldfish, and arms like a giraffe. Somehow it all turns it I to an apex predator and is your most haunted nightmare until you realize...."oh they have wings too!"
Wow nerd! been away for faaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrr too long, your space sharks are hands down the best I have ever ever seen, and that half possessed head was a stroke of genius! I also am loving your terrain work, you have managed to give the walls a real depth which i struggle to do immensely.
As for the talk of rhino rings ....why? why why why must this dark sweating cesspool that is your blog consistently defile my poor eyes?
nerdfest09 wrote: and snrub, Nerdwench doesn't mind at all, she in fact took the picture :-) she knows what i'm like by now, after 6 years together if she didn't like it she would have well and truly left me! 6 years! crikey I should probably see if she'd be willing to be Mrs Nerdfest soon shouldn't I!?
Sounds like a grand idea, mate.
How about we, your most loyal blog followers, all pose nude in much the same vein of your photo. Each of us holding a different letter of "Will you marry me?" over certain body parts.
Naturally. I don't want you internet perverts and psycho stalkers to know what I look like.
Hmmmm well I'm already screwed there, I'm a post whore and my avatar is my pretty mug. Also if nerdwench saw me in a speedo while proposing....... I think Damo would become single in a hurry and probably sued for mental anguish
So....many.....good....ideas! There is a large part of me that wants to do something a little crazy and Nerdy but the more respectable side of me (yes, there is actually one of those!) thinks I should stick to normal romance although I WILL convert and paint up a cupola as a ring just for giggles and give her that too, she'll love it! perhaps i can coerce some of my Nerd friends to take some semi nude pics with words spelling out 'Congratulations'? if she does indeed want that sexy sexy body for years to come!? and really why wouldn't she exactly, you can't think of a reason can you! so i'm safe then right?
Crikey, I'm not even planning on asking until later this year so i'm well organized thus far!
did nothing model wise today but work out I want $680.00 of ForgeWorld Mechanicum models for 30k
I can sense a meme coming on....... and you're right! wenches love blinged out rings.... and jewelery! in fact i was thinking a searchlight painted up like a diamond? now that's special!
Snrub wrote: Look, I think as long as don't propose in or have the wedding in Klingon then you'll be doing alright.
If you want to bling up the cupola ring a little bit then instead of a diamond you could have a stormbolter.
Get that wench a blinged out ring.
Wenches love blinged out rings.
QFT, the last convention I went to was ruined by protestors because their were two gay men getting married(the law was being overturned that day), and they were dressed up in their Klingon attire along with about 30 other Klingon want-to-bes, including the group of S&M Klingons . Let her have her moments during the proposing and wedding, lord knows your(we men) will screw up enough other important events.

Oh nice Theo. Blame the gays.
It wasn't the gays that bothered me, more the S&M Klingons, and the protestors were those "Christians" that go more to get the publicity than to do any "good", I forget their names but they go and get the crowd excited, get punched in the face, and then sue the people they protested for them getting punched. They even protested a soldiers funeral , better hope the guns used in the 21gun salute are full of blanks .

I know you weren't blaming the gays. I was just twisting your words for my own ends.
Well obviously both! and I have a question for you guys now :-) what would a small-ish 30k army look like for mechanicum? yes i'm off on a tangent that may never eventuate but hey! it's good to know!

Some Thallax would be a good start
Maybe some Battle Automata
Then you have your Myrmidons
There will be some stuff in the new book I haven't really looked at it yet so will check it out and get back to you, dont forget they like titans.......
whalemusic360 wrote: How much coin you looking to drop is the easiest answer to your question.
Oh, very little
if I do indeed jump and buy I'd probably set my budget to $200 Aus to start with and then build from there? it's the first time the actual models have inspired me to buy them for the joy of painting them for a long time! and on the plus side if i could eentually build a list then woo hoo! bonus!
Yeah of course! it'd be like those facebook house party invites! just with Nerds, we'd rock the reception and i could nude up for some wedding photo's?
In that case, I'd suggest getting the HQ, Thallax Cohort Bundle, and two of the Las-Lock Thrall kits (145gbp, my math about right on that?). Would give you a small, basic force you could add to as you wanted.
Or do you just want cool models without as much concern to being a playable force?

Or, i could be like a petulant child and just get all the pretty ones! then try and work out a way to make it work lol!
nerdfest09 wrote:Yeah of course! it'd be like those facebook house party invites! just with Nerds, we'd rock the reception and i could nude up for some wedding photo's?
You could throw Nerdfest09's Nudefest14.
It could become a yearly thing.
Also in regards to the ad-mech force. If you want some basic las/autogunners for basic troops (I don't know what constitutes basic troops in a 30k ad-mech army) then look at picking up a bunch of the DV cultists. They're already pretty techy looking for the most part and are easily converted for ad-mech tomfoolery.
I know Sheep started a good looking ad-mech force where he based his troops round DV cultists.
Thanks snrub, I haven't seen much of sheeps work lately so I'll go check it out and see if I can't be coerced into more plastic tomfoolery *sigh* it's a tough life!

I vote for the minis as the main attraction(sorry, but if I hung a calendar in my house my wife would eventually see it ), but special holidays or the empty square areas on each month should get the holiday snaps...nudge nude know what I mean
1:10 or so is relevant parts, not trying to say anything about the nerdwench

So long as he isn't trying to use the aforementioned mini to cover himself. God help us the month he decides to start epic and tries to hide himself behind 15 mm....
That picture has scarred my soul.
Well, either that or the fact that I have to paint yet MORE GAUNTS has done that.

This idea sounds fantastic.
I'll add it to my list of my not-warhammer 6mm model range down the line : D
Ta Daaaaaa! we have some more vehicles finished, yes finished!! Whalemusic's Space Shark Razorback and my personal Rhino's (well, not my OWN Rhino's but the model ones) Whaley's looks cool and way better than I thought the model would look using the faster methods I chose, a little bit of weathering and some freehand later and I'm pretty happy and I named it Thylacine because someone didn't realise Tassie had their own tigers called 'Tassie Tigers' or 'Thylacines'
and my two Rhino transports! so happy to finally get them done after so long, they fit in with the rest of the army even after such a hiatus from the 'Red Thirst' I suffer from I think having the bones on those front panels is enough to break up the sea of red, should look epic on a Storm chicken!
So,that's wave one of Spaceshark-o-rama done next shall be some Centurions and a stormtalon for them, but in the interim I will be doing some bare heads for BigH and starting my Imperial Knight that arrived today Thanks Whaley so lots more to come soon! hope you like the update and sorry it's been awhile in coming!
Harhar. Not my fault your whole country is full of things trying to kill you.
Hey, good timing on the arrival of the second part! All the rhinos came out great. The weathering really breaks up the big blocks of color. The addition (be it tribal markings or skellis) are great touches to it.
Well, a couple of things today guys firstly I kinda got carried away and built and primed my Knight cut his leg and repositioned him ever so slightly so he looks more like he's striding across the battle? I can see where he's going already and with the small hood hazard striped and some experiments with the metals he'll be beating on someone soon enough!
So that's the beginning of the big boy and I have a favor for a real nerd if they're willing? does anyone know binary code? I want to add it to the model somewhere to really drive home the Mechanicus vibe
Now next up is not really my area of knowledge but I have a massive nerd friend who mainly plays fantasy but also has three 40K armies he asked if I had a 'spare' drop pod so I gave him one in return for a few spare bits he had lying around..... needless to say I don't have much use for these models and have roughly sorted through and will show you what I found in case anyone out there wants anything and has some trades?
Spoiler:
This is the spare bits he gave me..... lots of skeleton and vampire stuff, a bit is metal and a few plastics thrown in, quite a few skellie horsemen and riders lots with spears and a whole bunch of alternate spare bits and weapons too!
A couple of them (I think 3) are these really cool looking metal ones with riders got a few of these models, are they wraiths of some sort? dunno about the yellow though I have never seen these before either and would love to know what the hell they are? 2fairly large metal nasties!
Got ten plastic rotting wolves.....dire wolves?
and now for the sprues! there's a lot of stuff on them all, some have just had a few things clipped off but they are definitely useful and you can make plenty of models from these ones.
quite a bunch of zombies and skeleton to use. these first ones are more ridrs for the horses with bits.
and 2 corpse carts complete from what I can tell too! along with some walking skellie legs
here's the Zombie sprue pile! you can make lot I reckon out of these
chaos warriors sprues, mainly helmeted heads, weapons and shields and random accessories
I found this Giants sprue with some cool parts?
and Dwarves! man did he give me some stuff, there are legs and bodies enough to build some models completely and everything else is weapon choices and other dwarfish bits?
PHEW! that's a lot of stuff, so if you have need for anything just make me an offer and i'll sort it and send what you need should I paste this in swap shop too you think?
That mass of stuff should be worth a good deal to the right person Nerdy. Might be worth putting up on the trading forum.
Very excited to see you progress on the knight. Can't wait for you to place all that binary on him. Surprised you didn't paint his lion cloth red as well.
Dang, you certainly jumped into the knight quick enough!
That's a crazy good trade for a pod too. I know you were planning an inquisition kill team, the chaos warrior might be worth saving for bits. Maybe. Like Gits said, sort it out into groups, put it up on swap shop for some Marines or Orks or whatever.
Daaaaaaaaamn nerd... Those Rhinos are unreal. The weathering and tribal marks on the Space Sharks are incredible, and I think it really takes it over the edge!
Red hot rhinos are a treat too, and Ill echo the sentiment that the bones really help to break up the mass of red... painting the inside of the hatches white was a perfect decision.
Knight looks great so far (Im eagerly awaiting getting started on some over here )
I gotta ask, though... How'd you go about basing it silver? Surely it cant be all brushwork!
And Im incredibly jealous about that trade... So much stuff!! Definitely worth sorting and seeing what you want to keep and what you want to sell!
Coolness! thanks for identifying those couple of models snrubby! :-) I'll copy paste into the swappy shoppy! I don't want or need any of those bits and sprues and models so if you guys think someone might find them useful then that's what i'll do :-)

Hey nOt_u yes the Knight was a bit left of field I was just talking about them with a mate and decided I had to at least paint one of them for my collection, not to mention I had a few ideas I wanted to incorporate to see if they worked! originally I was going to paint it like a great brass scorpion but changed tac.

There's still the small matter of my payment. I don't work for free you know.
Those barrels on the Knight base. Are they those funky put em in hot water and repose em barrels from Zinge?
Ah snrub, of course I shall cross your palm with plastic if you so wish? anything you want painted? and the barrels are just standard resin casts I had lying around

Thanks Yggs, I like painting the designs and little intricate bits but don't think i'm that great yet! but I sure do like doing it and will be tested with the binary
Nice man!! I go away for 2 weeks and youve got a ton done! THat Charcardon transport is fantastic, well both the red and that one. Sweet Battle damage Knight will looks cool too but the model itself is too baroque for my tastes. But youll make me love it anyways, damn you. Great update bud!
I can't believe that trade you got nerdy! Perhaps a little disappointing for there being little of use to you though the sheer volume you've received is staggering. Was he model laundering or something
Lovely looking rhinos too pal, and excited to see your knight!
You may be just as surprised as I am to see what I got done today! I got wave 2 from Whaley last week which is where I got my Knight from and had to paint some more Space Sharks for him which included 3 Centurions and a StormTalon, models I haven't painted before so I was pretty excited and keen to see what they were like. The Cents are pretty cool and very imposing figures I just personally don't see how they fit in the fluff? I would have liked to see different Terminator additions personally but eh! I don't make the rules
anyway, what did I get done today? EVERYTHING! I actually finished the Cents AND the StormTalon! I know!! I couldn't believe it either lol! but I'm pretty happy with how they look, they're all basic tabletop quality lots of edging and washing but to a decent level I think? and when they go alongside their battle brother it does indeed make for quite the sight I'm guessing you want to see the sights?
well, lets start with the Talon
and a little diorama against some of my own Death Company
and the Cents in all their shooty glory!!
and now for an epic picture of epicness! all the Space Sharks in one picture! hope you like them Whaley!
I churned through all that today and I can't believe it myself! so now for the Sharks I only have to paint 2 Chaplains and some objective markers! but next is BigH's bare heads all ready to go on the desk! and I may even finish my own Sang priest and Libby if I'm in the zone again
They look great damo , I was just thinking how the stormtalon would be coming around/over a building and look like a great white breaching the water on a kill .
Wow, that was super fast! They look great, you really seem to have a strong grasp of the tribal tattoos, which really sets the off. Looking forward to running some games with them. Thanks for painting them, it's way above what I would have been able to do.
I think you should upload some of the pics to Dakka. Been a lack of Damo on the front page lately.
Why thank you everyone! :-) I'm pretty glad they look o.k, I could have spent more time on them but I know myself well enough to know I'd go crazy and end up never realising the end of a project lol! but to Whaley, I don't mind painting for you mate I enjoy it and like (hopefully) making people smile with the models so lets hope they run rampart on the battlefield?
speaking of battlefield! I'm actually going to have a game next saturday!!!! this will be game number 6? since I was 14! 1500 points against Dark Eldar and he's not lost a game in the last 11 he's played :-( BUT should be fun times!
Damo...while I disapprove of any trade where Guard loses out to Marines ...you've done a fantastic job as usual. However, It's rare that I can offer you any crit. The weathering you do is fantastic, but aircraft will usually weather in a streaking fashion from front to back or how the air flows across the surfaces as debris in the air from battle collides, or even where the ground crew walks across it to do maintenance. Consider that a bit of a challenge on the next aircraft
I wanted some tank hunting snipers. I'm not sold on the utility of the grav guns on them tbh, I'll have to proxy some at some point to give em some trials.

Well, that makes sense... But Grav-cannons are soooooo cool ! Lol
I originally was going to go with las cannons and MLs and I'd seen first-hand how devastating they could be. However the friend that put the MW list together for me picked the grav cannons. When I asked why, he said it was the salvo and the grav gizmo thingie... whatever that does.

With the split-fire bit... you can effectively mix the weaponry in the squad, so it can take on multiple targets of multiple types effectively.
Doesn't the armour save on the grav weapons become the grav weapons AP value for wounding or something which is why they are so deadly to monstrous creatures, terminators etc?
Plus salvo is just plain mean
Your productivity never ceases to amaze (and annoy!) I'm especially liking the freehand tribal symbols on the armour and it's a little thing, but the headlight on the chibi-hawk really stands out for me as super-effective. The weathering is top-notch as well.
Thanks guys! :-) just managed to prime and shade a Stormraven Gunship! never done one before and I'm looking forward to it but you'll see BigH's heads first and then i'll do another Baal Pred a normal pred and a Razorback and my stormraven all at once! :-)
Righto guys a quick update today I'm painting a few bare heads for BigH and worked out the ones he sent I had a few already half done so I just decided to gift him a few extras i'm going to have to try and save a few of them as they are a little muddy from when i lost interest before! but I think throughout the lot there'll be some basic sort of table top ones and some more up to date better ones, the Maxmini ones are really nice and I am now going to get my own set to build some scouts with!
anyway I hope the start is interesting enough, not that you'll really notice much major change later as it's all pretty subtle stuff but I figured I should at least show you
here's some beret heads I did a while ago which will go to BigH
some cap wearing heads the faces are done but the hats will get more paint
spec ops head #1 still work to do
spec ops #2 still work to do as well Maxmini heads are cool! nearly done just need to tidy up some bits and darken the eye sockets
Played two games of 40k yesterday first one was against DarkEldar and the result was 'suprising' ..............o.k no it wasn't at all.................I got my a$$ handed to me by turn 3 i fact here's an image of the entire amount of his models I killed in the entire game!
Spoiler:
yep that's it, I WAS going to do a batrep, but it got kinda jumbled and then I was too far gone!
Then I played him again using his Space Wolves and promptly lost again!!!
Thanks for the kind words guys! my guys just had the worst Dice luck everrrrrr! I rolled so many ones we thought gnats had taken over my Dev squad got wiped first turn and nobody pulled their weight, it's heavy practice and bolter drills for the boys now!!
so incensed was I about the pasting I started assembling some reinforcements for next time!
20 more Tac marines
5 Vanguard now primed
10 man Sternguard with Bolters
the start of a 10 man Death Co.
and a little air support
Next game I'm just gonna try something stupidly different and see what happens!
Dang, that's one heck of a reinforcement wave! I can tell some of the DC squad are guys I sent, did you use the rest in the Tac squads, or still hoarding them for another project?
Yep, the red so far is indeed The Army Painter Dragon Red all I do is after priming I wash with Agrax then do my highlighting up in stages from blood red, blazing orange, vomit brown with a 50/50 mix of each colour in between finally finished with a wash of Baal red or Crimson and that's it for the armour
Whaley you're right the DC are indeed all the spares you sent me! I just removed the arms (because they need to be red) and scratched a few bits of glue off and now i'm waiting for a drop from The Combat Company which includes Black & White primers! I'm thinking arming them with a mix of Power weapons and ?
I also got painting done! yes that's correct I finished BigH's bare heads! I did purposefully leave some areas like hats fairly bland incase the need arises to change them to fit in with the army? from arms length they look really good but of course at this scale enlarged some look like I painted them with a toilet brush anyway trust me they aren't too bad in fact I hope you may actually like some of them
So, now that leaves me free tomorrow to start the stormraven and if my drop arrives I can begin the prep of Ferrus Mannus
That red is gorgeous, man. Can hardly believe thats the color progression you used. Positively nuts.
And as always, your mastery of skintones amazes me xD I particularly like the bearded chap all the way to the right on the third picture- his cheeks have an awesome red blush to them.
Cheers dudes! I did some blush on a couple of them to show either exertion or sunburn and to differentiate the skin tones over the lot of them. The MaxMini ones are a lot brighter and have a more coral tone than the others as I had to try something different with them because I'd run out of black primer which I use for my bare heads, so I used the Army Painter Barbarian Flesh Primer and tried it out, it does work but is brighter than i'd like :-)
Also those are some mighty chins you've painted up dude! And I love how you say your reds are simple, and then you rattle off a multi layer process pro painters everyone
Good grief that was a hard slog today! I usually manage to get a fair bit done on my paint day each week but I kinda outdid myself by painting an entire StormRaven I started by telling myself i'd just get the main armour panels highlighted and then as the day wore on I realised I could get it all done if I pushed myself, so I pushed and have some heavy fire support ready to bring the rain!
I did notice I haven't finished a couple of lenses and lights at the front dammit!! never mind I'll get to them next week.
I hope you like it guys, I think it looks pretty cool and it's my army's first flyer!
and a little group shot with some other similar attired vehicles!
nerdfest09 wrote: Yep, the red so far is indeed The Army Painter Dragon Red all I do is after priming I wash with Agrax then do my highlighting up in stages from blood red, blazing orange, vomit brown with a 50/50 mix of each colour in between finally finished with a wash of Baal red or Crimson and that's it for the armour
Cheers everyone! I know it may look like I have an army of clones at my disposal but I'm pretty much a paint by numbers kinda guy, I have my techniques for red, metals, bone etc and just do them in stages as I go, if you look closely you can see a few rugged lines and areas I could have spent more time on but overall i'm happy with it! and really that's the main thing isn't it! I'll take my time on Whaleys Primarchs and anything special as I use different styles to paint them and it takes longer, I actually better pull my finger out and start Ferrus as soon as my paint arrives as FW are releasing them at a bit faster rate lately and I've got to stil do Horus and Lorgar as well, then Vulkan will be out soon too! and Morty! I'm gonna love the saturation of beautiful models though!
and speaking of models i've got back into the swing of my own stuff again and have more plans for models for the flesheaters! another StormRaven a few dreadnoughts more DC and a Vindi will be bought and added soon, wether it gets painted soon is another story entirely! I saw a BA 1500 point list in an old WD and want to try it out against Commander Cameron and his filthy little army of DE!
That's a metric gak ton of work since I last checked your page Nerdy. I feel rather lethargic in comparison !!!
Awesome quality too ! Like the engine colouring on the flyer !
And , as no one has been childish enough to say it yet, Nerdy you do great head !!!
Now I really am going to have to get going and assemble the marines the heads are to go on...
Your reds are just awesome dude. The minis almost have a dim glow to em. Also I started painting yesterday! I'm also going to use your marble technique on a tombstone I added to the base of the model I'm painting.
I know i've played around with this chapter before ever so briefly but something keeps drawing me back to trying to do a better job! I bought some new yellows and was inspired yet again to have a shot, and this time I think i've got it! you can tell i'm happy with the job 'cos I used one of my good bare heads the body is indeed the GamesDay BA Captain model and now he's been turned into......
....... Captain Venn from the Howling Griffons
and a little pic of him fighting in the Badab War amongst the ruins of an imperial city!
I really like the yellow you ended up with. Very warm and looks great next to your beautiful reds.
Great work on the quartered scheme! Wonder if hes gonna have any friends?
Oh, and I never commented earlier, but..... damn you and your gorgeous red marines! That color just -glows-
I'm gonna be trying out your red mixes on a Chaos Lord I've decided to start painting...
Depends on the primarch they descend from. Blood angels with their gold armor (used to be just gold helmets). I think (scary ) , but aren't the griffons descendants of the iron hand? If so I'd say bionics all over the place.
GiraffeX wrote: Sadly they are from the Ultramarines, as per the FW chapter tactics pdf.
I have them on my list of chapters I want to paint, they look really nice. Would be cool to see a contemptor in those colours.
that makes it easier, just model them with a silver spoon in their mouths and a big stick up their and you'll have the perfect decendents of the ultramarines
Oh man, Damo, I don't know whether to hate you or love you!
I've just been planning some Howling Griffons myself, to get back into painting, and they'll never live up to yours!
Captain Venn looks great!
The yellow looks great. Did you start with Army Painter Daemonic Yellow? That was my plan.... (I imagine the red is the same you do for the Flesh Tearers....)
Damn it Damo, nice work! I've got 20 Death Korps waiting to assembled and it's making me shake just thinking about it- how do you get so much done, to such a high standard in such a short space of time? It's bile-inducing! (In a good way obviously...).
Thanks guys, I really love the look! the red is indeed the same as my FleshEaters and the yellow is a base of desert yellow washed with agrax then highlighted up like I usually do with 50/50 mixes gonna be a time consuming process painting them, especially if I take Theo's advice and model spoons up them
but enough of Venn, lets see someone else eh!
finally finished another half done guy! for my FleshEaters I now have a Jumpack Libby,
introducing...... Brother Librarian Atrus
I also whipped this bit of terrain up it's not totally finished around the edges but the large slab of marbled stone is done and looks o.k
The librarians robe is also very eye catching, not to mention it looks like he read my post and is about to put that staff in the right place to help you get some more griffons done.
Nice, gritty, realistic feel to the Marines. Is it a glow effect or scar tissue around the bionic eye? The light makes it hard to tell. Looks great either way.
Libby looks great, though I think he needs the jaws on his red pad as well. Marble looks very good as well, adding that brown grit on top of it really ties it with your basing.
Not really an update, more a place to jot down things I need to remember so i don't inadvertantly upset anyone! I have promised some things and done some work I need to send out to a few folks I want to make sure I have it correct and let those know things will happen soon as i can.

O.k Nerdwench is traveling interstate for a week next week and my RDO's fall on a couple at the start which means...... pure paint days! not 4 hours or 6 hours but I can paint until my fingers fall off or I go blind!! or I get sick of it anyway I think i'll test myself for one day and see if I can actually finish Ferrus Manus in one sitting! i'm all organized and know my process (I think) and I'll see if I really am a quick painter with this test! i'll grab a shot of the start of him primed tomorrow and then on Tuesday i'll time myself and see what happens, I won't cut corners or do a poor job to get him done, if he doesn't get totally done it doesn't matter it just means he'll be finished the next day but I want to challenge my brush arm!
Forgot that you were sending me something Damo! Quartermaster wasn't it? He'll be the perfect dude to fill for a Tempestor Prime!
Can't wait to see what you do with Ferrus
Are you planning on scenic basing them together? or just next to each other :-)
Automatically Appended Next Post: Been talking to Whaley about Howling Griffons and how to create a good force focussing on more of the painting and modeling aspect of the chapter, I'm sort of stuck on Ultramarines as that is written as they're parent chapter? but the DA codex is tempting too, especially with the veterans in robes and the opportunity for a small powerful army! if I go with Ultras i'd convert a finecast Marneus Calgar model and create my own Howling Griffon Master :-) likewise I want to make a cool HQ model if I go with DA so any suggestions about codex choice and modeling options just shoot away and i'll see what jumps out at me!
The Griffon looks great. Very nice work on the reds as usual and the yellows also. I missed out on that BA model quite recently. Hopefully the swings and roundabouts will have him turn up again before too long. The Librarian is also very nice. Are you going to add the chapter badge to his shoulder or just keep it on the Jump Pack? The ruined Aquila looks great - it's come up very nicely indeed!

Thanks for the input guys, I suppose I'm trying to get my head around the ideas I want to incorporate into the models ideally a small but hard hitting force so the model count isn't huge but has a few special characters or something I can use my cut and paste imagination to it's full extent!? perhaps I can have the robed figures as the squad sergeants? I'd love to convert that Marneus model though :-) but as I don't want a huge points list he'll be pretty pointless and a waste of money if I'm never going to use him! that's why I thought DA as they have some good characters that I can convert and play with but not break the points and wallet scales! or even Space wolves rules? i'm open to ideas and want to see what you guys think as i'm mainly a cool model and paint kinda guy! :-)

I've used robed marines as Sergeants and Corporals (the leader of the other combat squad in a 10-man tac squad). Once you've got some figures built, use whatever ruleset you like.
Yeah, go with your gut bro.
I spent last night doing spot details on tanks, which I'd stopped doing because it was tedious, but on this occasion was methodical and soothing.
Although far be it from me to endorse anyone who agrees with my advice

Yup for me ! Still have to dig in my pile'o'stuff (vacations & field training didn't help !)
I bloody did it!!! I finished another Primarch in a DAY! I know, I can't believe it either one day of sitting down with black coffee a bottle of RedEye and a determined stare.
I got Ferrus Manus all done and I like him, he's a really great model and looks damn powerful with the pose and bare arms, I wanted him to look solid but not boring so did some details in goldish brass colour and others in iron, some of the brighter parts on his chest aren't showing up very well i detail but it's not bad trust a nerd
His face in particular I am very happy with, a little darker skin with some flush to his neck and cheeks to show his exertion and focused hard stare! Oooooh he's tough.
this was yesterday....
and this is today
And there we go! hope you like him more fun to have tomorrow, hopefully some Howling Griffon fun! hopefully some Marneus Calgar cnversion fun!
Impressive work all around mate, though the most stunning part is, to me, the skin... And not ONLY the awesome silver-skin blending, the face is also really characterful !!
Thank you so much everyone! yes one standard earth day which means i've spoken to Whaley and he challenged me to paint 3 in a weekend!? lol Hmmmmm we'll see :-)
I do think the face and arms are the main focal points for the model and that's where I put the most attention, the metal skin blend did indeed work out nicely :-) and gave me confidence for when I paint Lorgar and his golden skin!
I did Ferrus' armour by washing the primed model with purple and blue washes before I went over it with black wash then highlighted with a really diluted grey in kind of that mnmm style thingy I do by accident lol
photo's, I use a black backdrop (duh) and just chuck the camera on auto but I have a little length of white cardboard I hold in front of the flash to diffuse it, depends how close or far along the lens I have it as to how bright I get.then I just adjust my contrast o the computer.
Not a huge update today but a very work in progress start of my DC Rhino, I am not entirely sure how to tackle it due to the way I started it but I'm hoping to trick and confound the eye by adding pretty things to distract you then just do some edge highlighting on the main part? any suggestions apart from starting again welcome
I like the Chaplain leaning out the top hatch, his role to curb the marines inside but still taking aim on the move!
and sadly my Marneus didn't arrive today so I finished the had I am using, it's the Korvyde head that was going on my Baal but wasn't quite done! but now it's all good!
I can't wait to Howling Griffon-ify Calgar and chuck that head on him, he's gonna look mean and nasty!
One day? Really? REALLY, NERD?
Come on, man. I cant keep up with that!! xD
My luck, you'll paint another Rhino and a Knight before I even get started on mine!!
Looks incredible though. Top notch skin tones.
Love the red freehand on the Rhino. Though if I may nitpick a little, the top looks a little gritty... Maybe the brush wasnt spraying as fine as you liked? Might need some smoothing and retouching with the airbrush (though careful you dont mar the lovely red!)
The head looks wicked, btw. Cant wait to see more Griffons!
Cheers fellas, the top is in fact very speckly as is the sides sadly as my ab is cactus :-( but GFX has just given me an idea! :-) would it be too busy if I hid the poor finish by freehanding more pretty designs all over it?
Your edge highlights seem way less precise then normal as well. I think you broke something while Primarch-ing. Other then the land speed record for painting a Primarch that is. I think the addition of designs in the black would make it look more like a rhino dedicated to a Chaplain then a DC rhino.
I don't think the rhino needs any more filigree, I'd redo those areas. Also I'd build a iron hands army to go with ferrus, because that would be stunning. Just don't use the stupid forgeworld torsos that just have parts gouged out and tubes added .
I think I will try the scrollwork on the rhino, my DC Dead has the same on him so it will tie in and hide the splatter, and I can then tidy up the lines I usually start out a bit rough and refine as I go but as you can probably tell I was annoyed with the rest of it!
O.k i'm happy now! I can see myself saving private Rhino
I have just begun adding the scrollwork in pure black and I'll highlight it and detail it up next time but I can see it working and still fitting with the rest of my force so i'm happy I think it will look good when I finish phew!
I also finally got Marneus in the mail!
not much in the way of converting, just scraped a few U off him then primed him and base coated the red parts and anything that was going to be either bone, gold or parchment based brown!
and to get a real feel for how he will look and inspire the rest of the army I popped his head in to see how it looks! ....and love it!
So, will he be epic? I certainly hope so, and will I save the Rhino? I certainly hope so, find out in next week's exciting installment of Nerdfest09....09.....09..09 (echo fades.......)
Very impressive work, Damo. The added dark filigree on the DC Rhino really brings it up to the level of the crimson panels. Korvidae's head looks great as well - and the 1-day work on Ironus Mannus is outstanding. You've come a long way with the quality of your work on head...s!
Filigree certainly saves the rhino nerdf. I have the same problem with my ab. Stupid cheap *!*#!!
Well done on Ferrous Manus. Fast work! But seeing it you wouldn't know. I imagine it could be even better if you spend two days on it, but would it be twice as good?
Lols cheers again! I think if I spent a day or 3 days on Ferrus it would still look the same I think and once the scroll work gets its highlights you shouldn't notice how bad my cheap airbrush spattered, I didn't relish the idea of starting the whole thing again
sorry to disappoint you Az, but no more *ahem* head until he's finished I don't want to ruin the final shots of him (whoever 'him' is? sans Calgar?) but I did finish the yellow armour panels this arvo!
and with Brother Venn, who now is leading a Tactical squad which is more suited to his wargear
Automatically Appended Next Post: I also quite like seeing that marneus model painted differently! I've only ever seen him as an Ultra
Damn, you don't mess around! That was a plastic wrapped box yesterday. Agreed too I don't think I've ever seen Calgar in something not ultra marines blue, very nice and no surprise your yellow looks very sharp and crisp. I think you'll enjoy how much of a beat stick that guy is just by himself. Like I said yesterday, throwing him into a termi unit plus landraider.... ouch time.
He's so angry! Should look good coming into a hoard of soon to be dead guys. Whats the plan for the cape? I'd think black would look good, normal cloth color might blend into the yellow to much, throw off the balance of the red.
I vote for a black or dark grey cloak for Not-Marneus, if I recall rfom IA books, that was the colour used in their alternative schemes and it would be a good colour which will not clash with the red and yellow.
Maybe a freehand golden griffon?
You have a real knoack for skin tones, I know you've probaly been asked before, but whats your process for painting flesh?
This thread is just full of epic-ness, I love the feehand on the rhino... Just too much goodness here.
Really thanks for all the positive comments and encouragement guys (& Bubble) it's no secret we all love the stuff we do with the hobby and when others enjoy it just as much then I guess I feel a little proud of how much i've learned in the last few years and want to do more! i'm pretty happy with how not-Marneus is coming along! I can really feel this army with its background and scheme and the knightly type of vibe, i've got some Termies coming for them which will look menacing!
I have finished the reds on him now and am pumped to get him done, i'm not sure about a couple of parts though if you wouldn't mind helping me out?
the cloak, I was thinking a cream so his armour would be darker but I agree that a charcoal would fit better, do you want me to paint a Griffon on the back? would that be too much? if I do would a gold image like the chapter symbol work, or an actual picture of a Griffon? remember I still have a Land Raider for him to do so that may be better for me to practice freehand on?
the metal areas? his collar etc, I was going to do gold to enhance his standing as chapter master but the HG's have darker iron looking accents which look good, the eagle on the right shoulder I was going to leave yellow so you can see the distinct quartering but feel it needs to be a metal now? so basically just what you guys think would look good!
purity seals, purple good? thinking it's regal enough and even though i've not done a helmet yet what lense colour ?
right now i've bored you into a stupor, here's where I'm at!
and this arrived today and i'm super excited to actually open them!!!

Do a heraldic griffon. Their whole scheme is based on quartered colours and heraldry. Perhaps a griffon on his personal heraldry would be good - a shield on the charcoal cloak displaying not-Marneus' personal heraldry overlaid by a griffon rampant.
As for the metal, gol would work since he's a CM and covered in bling, but you can also use a different shade of gold, and perhaps darken it to a copper tone in the darkest recesses. A rich, yellow gold into copper-orange rather than a whitish gold.
Green lenses if you want to contrast them strongly as a spot colour. Deep jade green. Purple may or may not contrast enough. Give it a try and see how it looks. Though to me green and blue purity seals always look "wrong". Anything but red looks "wrong" to me actually, so perhaps disregard my opinion there... Lots of shades of red to use, though..
Paint some plastic seals off tac kits, etc and blu-tac them to his armour so we can see a selection?
Damn it! Had it all typed out and dakka lost it! Now you get the bullet point version.
-Grey cape. Freehand not needed, just edge detail.
-Gold or Iron works. Black Eagle on pad.
-Green lenses. I like the current seals on him, though green could work too.

sorry I've been quiet last few days but i've been pretty much bedridden :-( just totally exhausted and crook in the guts, I should be up to painting during the week where i'll finish my HGHQ! i've also decided to try something i've not done before on the back of hi cloak, I know some of you are familiar with Pyriel's work and how devastatingly good it is? well, he did a Corteaz model and painted the cloak like Crushed Velvet, I want to endevour to do a yellow crushed velvet effect, I'll just do it on the back incase it doesn't work lol!
I'm pretty confident you can pull that off Damo. I checked his mini out BTW, whoa! That cape looks great (as well the rest of the mini. Some people's talents )
No, no Aussie natives laid me low i've got 3 little furry police that patrol 24/7 not even our little spiders escape their attention!
but through it all I have finished my Howling Griffons Chapter master Not-Marneus (please help me name him something clever! )
i'm pretty pleased with with him and the things I tried, the cloak I think I can perfect if I try it again but even my first attempt I think looks cool and a little different overall he's the image I wanted, striding through the battlefield all bravado and rage fueled righteousness, his quartered armour a beacon to his troops, not a hint of fear as he goes toe to toe with any enemy!
here's a few pics to show you!
and the back of the cloak......Crushed velvet enough?
and I started very basically to block some colours on the other beat stick riding with the HG's
I don't know much about the howling griffons backstory, which ethic type they are based off of, but why not make them Australian and call him Sydney.... Or Syd for short. Why??? Because he doesn't look like a Mel(Bourne) to me... Unless he's the great x100 grandson of Jason bourne .
