Vik- I just randomly ran across this flickr photostream for steam-powered walker designs when googling "access ladder to hatch"- strange google-fu

Pfft. Haha! Oh, I'd kinda love to live down south, where people panic at a couple inches of snow, or a bit of freezing rain. The most I get in weather like that is "Careful driving. The roads are gonna be a bit slippery."

The local village CO OP get stripped bare of all essentials at the mention of snow …..it makes me laugh why you going to need 3 loafs of bread and 10 pints of milk for a day of snow mind you they do the same thing on a bank holiday buy a weeks worth of extra food because the shop is closed and extra day PANIC BUYING …….

nice find dave, that lego steampunk is excellent!
as for the weather discussion...ohoh... seems the imperial steampunk thread has turned in a off topic sidetrack of the weatherchannel persuation...
well anyway...
regarding the holepunch...it has diameters of 2mm up to 5mm...
so i think it is now high time to get this thread back on the path of righteous riveting...
here i present you the Ringmaster...^^
he is on many parts the prototype robot that might see casting... i have yet to settle on a style for the boiler and then for the guntype...
and a new weapon design i made...still early in WIP...

and again... lol... the tophat is made of a ring of tubing from PC and at least five small 5mm discs of PC...curtesy of my holepunch...the glueing is wuite difficult... as the glue tends to let the small discs glide when pressed on them...the shaping is a bit difficult...but at least with this one i can say i tried to get that look^^ next time i aim for straight...and we will all be surprised how this might turn out then^^

I think it depends on the local music scene in a city or town nowadays.
-Everyone knows that 2-3 companies own all the radio stations, and American Idol crap is polluting everything. People quit listening/watching and go local, that then hips them to certain bands. Wilco is from Chicago, so relatively close to here.

I have a tool similar to this got mine from home base years ago works well ( UK dwellers will know where I mean) not bad little thing but some times the rivets are not small enough but then I found some craft paper punches perfect for the job
Whats next on the robot front I am thinking you need to start looking at the HQ front ….. some communication medic ( mechanic in this case ) standard (large walking flashing neon billboard) musician (I see a one man band type creation here ) and your general (this is where the monocle comes into play

at max I liked Krull, why is it listed in the bad movie section?
i think it is because of it´s age... some peep confuse age with a fading quality... it is rather dumb... i liked the movie too... it has all the major ingrediants same as star wars... in fact it is almost a one to one copy of star wars set in a fantasy world...even a hairless chewbaca is there^^

oh...and shrike, who got banned due to some misunderstandings for some days...
the new rivetto's torso seems a tad wide- maybe it's the body not being tall enough or something, but it seems rather boxy.

i bet you wont stand a fleating chance against a good taxcollector worth his salt... here in germany you can get real problems when you have your own waterclearing device and try to skip the water clearing fees by that... and heck in some areas of germany tabwater is cheaper than used (for a lack of a better word...) water...

about that arm tho... do you see what is needed now to make it look workable? the pistons...do they need some connection or band to connect them to the structure? atm they do look as if just glued on... and do you have an idea as to what that medic/mek arm should be wielding?

There's one issue I can see with the Arm- for those pistons to get a good range of motion, the wide bit needs to be a lot longer- remember, the skinny part goes into the dicke part it retracts, and usually doesn't come out the other side.
If you're going Steam powered, instead of modern-style hydraulics, you'd only need one hose, but also a heavy-duty spring to push the joint back the other way- or you could use two hoses, as well. But one hose is possible, because steam can just be vented after being used to extend or retract the piston, instead of needing to be re-circulated.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Each piston should have a cylinder and a rod. THe cylinder is typically half as long as the Rod, maybe a little more.....
I learned all this making the hydraulics on the warhounds.....
It isn't difficult to get the length ratio down after a few tries.....

Great start! I thnk RSJake's sketch is a good direction details wise, but you have a few problems with your pistons (assuming that you're going for realistic, which is a big assumtion when you're building science fiction stuff )
Check out this excavator:
Hydraulics work by pushing/pulling on one side of a joint to create movement. The problem with your arm (though awesome looking ) is that the joints are at the end of a member, which leaves nowhere for the piston to attach to and thus move said member
( no jokes about moving members! )

Moving members aside, Rawson is right. You have the piston attached at each end to a pivot point. That placement of hydraulics allows for no movement. After all the hydros I have put on my titans I cannot understand why I didn't see that before......

Thin floral wire wrapped around a rod should give you a plentiful supply of springs. Also clicker inkpens

Or, if you're going for a clockspring look, cut strips of cola cans and wind them around needlenose pliers or a piece of wire.

Gah! So much to catch up on... "bolt pistol" looks good, but the ammo doesn't look right- the barrel seems to large for the bullets (Unless it's a shotgun-type thing)
Servo-arm idea drawn up on paint looks good, especially the extra gubbinz to beef it up a bit.
In the group shot, they look great, very unique but similar enough to pass as a squad- will they have an element of the paint scheme unifying them? Maybe the right hands being the same colour, or shoulder plates?
But in any case, great work, keep it up!

WELCOME BACK shrike^^ ...nice idea there with the tie-in element...have to think up a way to do so...might be needed to add something tho...
the way i imagined the boltpistol is that it is more of a shotgunpistol...so you are rather close!
at anvil:
Or, if you're going for a clockspring look, cut strips of cola cans and wind them around needlenose pliers or a piece of wire.
somehow i don´t know or cant picture what you are suggesting...pic might help here...
at dave... wanted to rey that idea out for the next try... the pistons will get to be redone completly...more thicker...
at fatty... lol and thanks^^
at max and rawson...yup.. thanks for the critizism...i try to make it selling the look...it should even if it is fiction look like a real thing... and after looking at this digger i see the error of my simple ways...but i can still fix that... if all else fails i need to restart... it is all in the learning curve^^
at LDD i feel your pain mate... one day i was out with the family and i was in a rusty mood...meaning that i was walking around and looking for rustyness in the "terrain"... when i finally saw some beutiful rusty smoke stack at our local hospital and showed it to my missus i got exactly the look you mentioned..."does this bring food to our table?"... that look...you dreamer...but then i tell her why thank you very much fr that unromantic insight...and after that mental slap in her face she took my hint and she understood me... i think sometimes the ever yelling for romantic femmes have to get their head set straiht by a severe talking to...after all they do that on a day to day basis with us...^^
i do own a smaller drill...cordless one...no dremel tho... so i am eager to see this methode...as i didn´t understood anything about the how to^^
and mordain... shooting the elderly is ok with me... no dogs or birdies please^^
sorry guys... my youngest son needed to get brought home early from the kindergarten...he is somewhat a bit feverish...hope it will get better soon... so no work on the hobbyfront except that i tore the pistons apart from the arms... instead i have built a steam lego tank i want to show you tomorrow^^
cheers, vik

well he was rather tired today... even went lying on the couch a coupla minutes... for an almost four year old that is pretty hard to do... then he got better...but after watching some telly before night time he was pretty low... so i am hopeing for the best tomorrow... the kids have carnival at their kindergarten, and my wife sewed roman legionnaire costumes for each of them... they go as a team so to say... and they are both very eager to show their costumes and want to prance around in it... if he is really ill and i have to keep him at home...that will be very hard indeed... i cross fingers for that not about to happen!!! i think after the recent uproar of suitable banter...it is finally time to give you, my loyal followers some nice picture updates...
i have been working on LDD´s idea to make a Rivetto medic /mechanic...one model for two purposes so to speak...
for this i also thought about making small tracks... but it turned out i couldn´t mount the torso on the tracks without tearing off the mech arm...
now it gets some nice legs... i think in the end this wll be a tall mini like the heavy...
the tracks will find a different use...
on the pics you see the torso and the tracks fron and back each...
and then a lil bit i did last two days for my kids... a sort of steampunk lego landraider^^
enjoy:
note the crack wont be seen as it is the connective middle part...^^
and the steampunk landraider

I agree the tracks look amazing and what you used , how you came up with that is beyond me.
The Medic is looking tops and your PC work has just jumped to a new level, that punch has been very busy boy the look of those round pieces, but I have to say my favourite bit is the cog it just works on all levels, is it for decoration or a working part or both cant wait to se more of this guy.
When you said he is as large as the heavy that was a good call, after all as a medic hefty lifting would be involved so he would need to be bigger than the rest of the bot's .

at baiyuan...thank you sir... and by the way...the idea for the trackmounted medic i git from your libirian...the one we still need to see some new pics of^^
at LDD...
well the credit for the trackmacking idea goes to the pre league days here at dakka... when the first tank was in the making...shaso and some other guys, but mainly him suggested the use of cofey stirers as a means to make cheap tracks... mind you they are atm pretty basic...still some more work to do on them...
you said he is as large as the heavy that was a good call, after all as a medic hefty lifting would be involved so he would need to be bigger than the rest of the bot's .
my thoughts exactly... he will get a set of arms like any other rivetto has too...
the cog is for ornamental purpose... there was recently talk about a means to have a tie-in item... this cog will work as a regimental crest sort of... imagine it being later painted in blue red and white... as a sort of royal airforce banner...just with cogs, rivtes and nuts^^
have a bout 30 sugar pots at home and the sugar that was in them
lol... i hope no one can press charges on me for your reactions^^ Automatically Appended Next Post: lone dirty dog wrote:Crap I forget to give feedback on that , it looks great now create it in PC and I would be even more impressed
actually i have a half built version of a real LR in the maing...onn the to do shelf for almost a year now.... done with the `orrible PC i first bought back in my starting days... it doesn´t take plastic glue... so i put it aside...
when my rivetto fever has burnt down then i will make a new PC tank...that at least is for sure...

Like the cog idea and the colour scheme will tie it altogether nicely, idea borrowed an idea shared it's all good ……
Just deny any acquaintance and you will be fine.
Returning too the tank is a must sill you should base one around that one as well

Well if I get in later on in the year (a month or so, maybe), I won't be doing much because 90% of my conversions are infrantry, being space marines as well, so very little room for rivets.
Rest assured though, if the opportunity for rivets arises, then I will include them ^^

That and how you make your rivets helps too, inventiveness is the key! Dave can do all plastic rivets from stuff he cuts with his selection of tools, Vik is the master of cardboard rivets thanks his punch-o-matic, and I did the liquid rivets as part of the group. Others have done any of the variants or more. Some also know how to get the sheets of "rivets" that are out there on the market

lol...shrike i think that is a perfect way^^ but hey... if you are then a riveteer, your threads will be "exalted" too^^
as a matter of fact... about the business of riveting... today marked a new era of riveting... now i have masterd shaso´s aproved and tested to perfection methode of glueriveting!!!
i hereby present to you the first chapel of the church of rivbeting:
(note it is still majorly in WIP stages but the general idea and direction is showing through....)
and as it is already st. valentines day in some parts of the earth...my wife and me exchanged some valentines presents... i got a box of pyramid cake pieces...and some tupperwear small boxes...the initial one was also filled with smarties...and after the kids and us emptied the sweets into our bellies this slogan^^ was found:
which reads in denglish (german/english mix) "I niet you" a pun as it could be read i need you...but the pun lies on the NIETE= Rivets... so i guess my wife accepts my "interest" in rivtes^^
and because as i like to bring forth some hints and tips for making rivtes for new possible rivetsaddicted... i hereby show a bit of my trade... i present...the rivetmaker:
just an xacto knife handle with a needle instead of a knife... not really rocket science, but someone has to think about tools and i do that from time to time...and the thingy works like a charm when it comes to my cardboard rivets...
cheers, vik

Did Mrs Domm get an "I see what you did there"? Love the church, in all of it's rivety glory, though the altar/pulpit/whatever the hell it's called (no pun intended)'s top seems slightly to the side of it's other half (again, no pun intended) Idea for the church- how about all the members of the LoER make a model guardsman to represent themselves in the church of riveting? Dunno if it could be like waagh! Dakka, with a virtual group, or send the models to you... just an idea ^^

Post by: Viktor von Domm
oh the pulpit is but in it´s very early stages...in fact it is built like the steamboiler in the right side from leftover wooden stirer bits i had lying around for the wall building... so it will get a lot of work done and also it is only resting on that bigger piece of wood for the general feel of it...
and no...mrs domm doenst get a "i see what you did there" it gave me a warm feeling all over^^

Post by: lone dirty dog
I am thinking top hat, monocle, bow tie, pin stripe suit, waistcoat, pocket watch and walking stick ………. my fluff it you like ……... was that the Empire was working on a toxin that could be launched into ork infested area's, this would then create a calming effect lowering there aggression levels and placing them in a restrained state.
This would allow dozens of Orks to be captured and further test to take place, however after the original toxin was tested on a single ork they found that the Toxin had amazing side effects, this included a rise in civil behaviour an increase in IQ and the ability to grow hair.
Although this was not the desired effect, scientists continued to work with the Ork (now named Zeno) the first thought was to educate and use him to infiltrate Ork colonies, However this did not happened due to his growing hatred of his own kind.
He found the ignorance, aggression, and General personal hygiene issues of his kin a disgrace, from this point he turned his back on everything that was once himself.
Due to his growing hatred for his own kind limited his use within the Empire, however his intelligence continued to grow at an extreme rate as well as all his abilities, including communication and social standards.
He continues to work for the Empire (even though he has no real choice) creating elaborate devices for the destruction of his own race, the toxin has since been destroyed due to fears of a super Ork race.

Dam Vik you keep ruining all the surprise ….. He was going to be standing up right for sure …… so when some one said thats not right , I was going to say this is the side effect of the toxin creating a kind of Evolution within him, he will be slightly less built in mass as well
STRIKE FORCE !!!!!!! did you not read the toxin has been destroyed for fear of a new super Ork race ! …….However I could say that Zeno took samples of his own blood and cloned himself Hmmmmmmmmmmmm No cant this is my Avatar just the one.

Yes, but the Ork is working class, however you still need some kind of structure to the house of Riveters, I just assumed that you and Vik were the founders therefore hold the highest position within.

I spend every day of my life wiping the asses of those who *think* their money puts them in an upper class to me, when in reality, they are helpless, clueless, morons in the worst possible sense. However, their checks don't bounce
I absolutely reject the idea that you are born to one class or another, and stuck there for life. Sorry dood, that's bullshhiiit. I was born to a factory worker and a grocery-store worker, and I worked too damn hard to get where I am today.
Commie, no. But do I believe that if left unchecked, and unregulated, Corporations, banks, and rich people will always take every possible opportunity to exploit working-class people. and take their own imaginary birthrights at the tip of a sword (or gun, or dollar)- just as they always have History stands as my witness to this.

Sorry but I think you may have misunderstood class, I mean class not as in what society defines the level and means as to what we live, but the structure as to what you choose to live by, as to the meaning your birth right to choose.
I dont define class by financial means or the place that society says you belong but the way you choose to treat yourself and others, as to you're reply I actually totally agree with every word of it, and goes as far as saying any body can achieve what they want from life, as long as they are determined to achieve it.
Dave if you feel so strongly about these people why let them aggravate you so, after all they depend upon you

Well, all this status and pedigree (what's dog food have to do with anything?) aside, I really like the ideas people have for their Rivet-Ars!
I am thinking a modified Cadian body with my "yet to be made" steampunk-ish arms, and gloved hands, along with the weapons I just finished and one of the skull helmets I did. He'd be a sniper of some kind. With a cloak and hood I think. It will be a while though, I still have to send all of the things I made to have them cast up.
