Looks like having the most players playing over seas in the league during the lockout has helped the bruins be in better form than everyone else(for one game lol). Not a huge hockey fan but getting into it more and more due to every friend of mine are long time bruins fans haha.
Hopefully having a shortened season should have the same effect as the nba lockout last year and make the whole thing be that much more interesting because everyone game counts even more.
Good Lord did the Nucks have a pair of sieves last night.
I can spend about a thousand dollars for me and the wife to go see the Nucks not give a gak, or less than 75 to see the up and coming kids in the WHL try their hearts out.

In their defense, it was against the Ducks, who have recently had great offensive teams.... Was it more an issue of Schneider being rusty, or a poor defense not helping Schneid out as needed?
The Blues have an exciting new player in Vlad Taransenko (or "Vova"). It's hard to temper your enthusiasm when you see him, but check out is first two goals of his career (on his first two shots in the NHL!).
This is his first on a breakaway... he has such a wicked shot:
Really? I'd love someone to try that on me next time I showed up to Scott Trade in my Wings jersey.
Detroit was certainly off it's game last night, but I fully expected them to lose. First time in 20 years without their Lindstrom security blanket. It's going to take some getting used to.

It's good nature smack talk... that's all.
It stemmed from the recent Redwing's dominance over the blues that they've become our hated rivals (almost as much as the Blackhawks ) [don't remember when, but there was one playoff where Yzerman shot a puck from the center line and scored... that.was.epic.fail. Plus, Hullie won a cup with the Wings... ]
You come here in person, drinks are on me bud. If fact, PM if you're planning on attending this year and we'll go rumble!
Unfortunately I'll be working a swing shift on the other game they come to town, so that'll be a no go for me. I don't buy tickets to see the Blues. If I end up with a free set, I'll take you up on that though.
If your in the area though, maybe we can get together for a game of 40k some time. I play at Fantasy Books and Games in Fairview Heights, IL, but I could possibly make a trip across the river sometime.
Eastern conference games last night were fairly boring, Western Conference looked really exciting (I spent the day from 1pm to midnight watching every hockey game i could find lol).
Man, Philly and the Rangers both shut down in their first two games. Not a great start for them. This is going to be an unforgiving season, bad starts can put some teams into unrecoverable dives.
*crosses his fingers that the Wings pull their gak together tonight*
Yeah, not pretty for Philly, sitting at the botton and looking up at the Rangers... And the got NJ next, That's always a .... lively... game.
Hoping NYR tank it in the late season like they always do.
On the Buffalo game, P-plays against didn't help Philly, but neither did the 40 shots the Sabres took. Bryz is good but not 40 shots good.
Since football is ending I need a new sport to follow. Cleveland doesn't have an NHL team, so I can cheer for whoever I want... gotta find a snazzy jersey lol

Check out the St. Louis Blues... it's an up and coming team!
What about your sister city? Columbus Blue Jackets?
Coyotes need all the fans they can get... i actually went to a coyotes game in phoenix against the blue jackets, there were more Colombus fans than Coyotes fans there, I was further confused because I forgot that Columbus had an NHL team, thought it was interleague
I like the start the Pens have had. Vokoun was a huge get for them. It'll let them rest Fleury whenever they want, which is key considering how compact the regular season will be. Fleury wore down bigtime last year since his backup was so horrid.
Hey man, team allegiance isnt a conscipus choice or decision, you're born to support a team, you dont pick which team that is. I was born and raised in New York City, I drifted between the Rangers, Islanders, Penguins, Ducks (damn you Disney!!) and Sharks for many years... then i moved to New Jersey, fell in love with the Devils and the rest is history.
If that is the case then I'm not born to root for anyone. Cleveland doesn't have an NHL team and so I didn't grow up supporting a pro team. We were the Barons, the Lumberjacks, and the.Barons again serving as the minor league team to the Penguins, now, with the Lake Erie Monsters, we're the minor league team for the blue jackets, a team I don't like, so I don't have a team to root for but I'm looking for a team to follow

Why not Buffalo? The Sabres almost have a pirate theme going with the crossed blades...
Of course I am a Flyers fan. Grew up with the Broad Street Bullies and Dave "The Hammer" Schultz.

11 goals in the first two games? Are you kidding me!
a Stanley cup in 2010!
Sharp and Kane are two of the most amazing players in the NHL. The rest of the team is not bad either. Plus the Hawks are gonna win the cup this year anyway if they continue on this trend of scoring an average of 5.5 goals a game.

Your team has nothing to do with where you're from or where you live mate.Penguins are from Pittsburgh, the Ducks and Sharks California... I've never been to either of those places. Closest I ever got to Pittsburgh was a night in Toledo, Ohio. Anaheim/San Jose was two days in Seattle. My football teams are the Saints and Raiders, Raiders are a California team and closest I've been to NOLA was Orlando, Florida sadly enough. You were born to be a fan of some team or another, its just a question of which one and how you find it. I recently got a friend into hockey, his team? Nashville Predators because he likes the way Pekka rinne minds the net, and from there he grew to love the rest of the team.

So then why can't I base "my team" on which uniform I like the best? If I spend time watching their games, don't I want to at least enjoy the way they look on the ice while I'm learning the game?

Yep, for the longest time I was a Red Wings fan by conscious choice... Then I really started to watch them, and all that red had me seeing.. well, red. About that time was when the Canucks changed their unis to the ones right before the current blue/green/white ones, and now I'm hooked on the Nucks. (it also doesnt hurt that they are geographically, the closest to where I grew up)
Whooo! The future Norris Defenseman just tied it for the Blues!
Edit: dammit... the kid who was instramental in that last goal just cleared the puck into the crowd . Bad kiddo!

Ah hah! Like i said, not a conscious decision, it just happens!
My words, I am eating them... Though to be fair, I did only watch 2 games last night, after Kyle Turris scored that goal in the first period against the panthers, I kinda of stopped flicking back to the Sabres/Maple Leafs game.

Automatically Appended Next Post: So any good teams playing tonight?
Yup... Blues and Blackhawks. Traditional Rivalry and two really good times right now.
It'll be a battle.
Automatically Appended Next Post: EDIT: Heh... there's even a wiki on this:
The Blackhawks–Blues rivalry features two teams in the Central Division of the NHL, the Chicago Blackhawks and
St. Louis Blues. Since 1970, the two teams have been in the same division together.[1] It is the most intense rivalry in terms of penalty minutes and fighting,[1] and it is common to go to a Chicago vs. St. Louis game and see a brawl break out.[1]
The Blackhawks are an Original Six team, while the Blues entered play in the 1967 expansion. The long-standing bitter rivalry between sports fans from Chicago and St. Louis, which are separated by 300 miles, as seen in the Cardinals–Cubs rivalry in Major League Baseball, has led to the Blackhawks and Blues to have an intense hatred for each other. The two teams have been in the same division since 1970 (Western 1970–74, Smythe 1974–81, Norris 1981–93, Central 1993–present). They also make it the playoffs together between 1980-1997.
The matchups reached their zenith in the early '90s, when both teams had well-known stars such as Denis Savard, Chris Chelios and Ed Belfour for the Hawks and Brett Hull, Adam Oates and Curtis Joseph for the Blues and played in old arenas (St. Louis Arena and Chicago Stadium) that were regarded as two of the loudest in the league.
[edit]Notable moments
One notable moment in the rivalry was the 1993 Norris Division Semifinal: Chicago had won the division handily but were swept by the Blues, winning the series on an overtime goal. Belfour, who said he had been interfered with on the goal by Hull, went on to cause thousands of dollars' worth of damage to the visitors' dressing room at the Arena, breaking a coffeemaker, hot tub and television among other objects. To this day Belfour refuses to appear in regular-season games in St. Louis: the only exception coming in 1999 when he replaced Roman Turek for the Dallas Stars in the third period of a 4–4 game, and only after Turek had allowed four unanswered goals. When he was spotted skating onto the ice, the Savvis Center crowd greeted him with the "Bellll-foooour" chant, first popularized in the '93 series. Ironically, Hull and "The Eagle" were Dallas teammates in 1998–99, and both critical in the Stars' narrow Cup win that summer, which came at the expense of the Buffalo Sabres and Belfour's former teammate Dominik Hašek.
The Blackhawks and Blues were also fierce rivals in the Norris Division along with the Minnesota North Stars, a three-way rivalry that was among the most heated, if not the most heated, in the NHL. In fact, it can be argued that all five members of the classic Norris Division (Chicago, St. Louis, Minnesota, Detroit, and Toronto) were mortal enemies.
[edit]St. Patrick's Day Massacre
Perhaps the defining moment of the rivalry came in a brawl during a Blackhawks 6-4 win over the Blues in a game on March 17, 1991.[1][2] This game became known as the "St. Patrick's Day Massacre" for the massive amount of fighting and penalties handed out to both teams.[2][3] In the game, the two teams, who were fighting for the Presidents' Trophy got into a brawl after Glen Featherstone shoved Jeremy Roenick after his hard hit on Harold Snepsts. Keith Brown shoved Featherstone, beginning a brawl.[3] Twelve players, six on each team, were ejected.[2][3] After reviewing the tapes, the NHL suspended Blues defenseman Scott Stevens for two games, and Hawks Mike Peluso and Blues Kelly Chase each for 10 games and fined both teams $10,000 each.[4]
[edit]Recent developments
The Blues and Blackhawks did meet in the 2002 Western Conference Quarterfinals. The Blues won that series 4 games to 1.[5][6] With the rise of the Hawks and Blues back into prominence in the late 2000s. Which was included in the 2008–09 season when both teams made the playoffs.
Also, during the 2011–12 season, both teams were engaged in a battle for first place in the Central Division and the Western Conference, along with another Blackhawks rival in the Central Division, the Detroit Red Wings, which the Blues ended up winning with 109 points as opposed to Chicago's 101.
Devils Flyers tonight, great rivalry there for different reasons (the weirdos in South Jersey are under the sway of Philadelphia and tend to support said team more than their own hometown heroes).

Some kind soul PM'd me a link, currently streaming the audio of the Blackhawks game through the NHL app.

I never bought a Parise jersey, I was going to a few years ago but have heard way too many rumors Parise was not happy in Jersey and wanted to leave.
Kovy is logging way too many minutes in just a few games, by the time the playoffs get here he will be beat. Devils are in borderline rebuilding more. When Marty leaves it's going to be a painful 4 or 5 years getting the talent to compete for cups.
Make-ya-Laughs yet again come out and dominate the first period against the Rangers and go up 2-0 on all of three shots...
Then proceed to lose the game 5-2!
Someone needs to remind these guys a hockey game is still 3 full periods!
Oh well, since it's obligatory where the Fallen are concerned:
No, and it does not make any sense, an American Football is not shaped like an Egg at all...
People are dumb.
Plus if Soccer is called Football, how do you explain this:
Clearly that guy is playing Handball, not football.....
I'm well aware that it doesn't look exactly like an egg but you use your hands to pass the ball and catch the ball which is oblong and not round so it is closer to an egg than a ball which is generally round. As to your goalie image I believe you're not allowed to hold the puck with your hands in hockey yet they give the goalie an additional tool to help him tend the goal.
Chicago won in OT, but man the Wings put up a fight tonight. That was the best they've looked all season so far in my eyes. Chicago was definitely outplayed tonight, Crawford was the only reason they won.
Michalek missed the opening shot, while Spezza and Turris did what they tend to do best, though Turris scared me, the Pitt's goalie caught the puck under his legs, shifted weight, and the puck slide into the goal. But the third shooter for Pittsburgh made the goal :(
whembly wrote: Wow! That 'couver player needs to be suspended.
What was he thinking?
Maybe a game or two, but it wasn't a case of real abuse of the official. Rather, the 'Couver player was shoving the ref out of the way as he likely thought his teammate was about to get jumped by two Sharks players.
As an on-ice official, you get bumped & thumped by players all the time during the play because you do end up thing their direct path. (and it typically can't be helped either, because your own positioning is more important!)
Give the dude a light token suspension because he shouldn't have laid a finger on the ref, but don't make an example of him.
It's not like he took advantage of the situation and utterly crushed the ref, or tried to hurt him in anyway.
Last time there was a season this short was 94-95. Philly started out slow but fought to finish 2nd in the conference.....
only to lose to the Devils in the conf final.
Not worried about the 2-4 record they currently have.
Simmonds can be a beast but he needs to remember he isn't Dave Schultz. 27 PIM is bad after 6 games.
Rangers tonight, Bryz is the better goalie so Flyers should do ok.
If they can stay out of the box.
They are currently tied for first in PIM with Colorado....at 124.
It'll be a rough game for St. Louis. They'll be on the tail and of back to back games, deep in enemy territory with a team that's just been getting hotter and hotter, and will be well rested.

I really hate how teams now get a point for losing just so long as they get into OT/Crap-out (shootouts are even worse in my book - that's not how you decide a hockey game damnit! )
It's laughably stupid how teams who've lost 12-14+ games in OT get into the play-offs, but a team with more outright wins gets knocked out because their loses were regulation losses.
Losing is losing. Do away with this non-sense of giving pts for failure!
If a game is tied at the end of 60 minutes, who cares?! Give both teams a point, or else play the OT and if a team wins, then the loser gets nothing, like they used to back in the day.

I hope they wake the feth up.
Ouch man, we played the Sabres last night, and apparently I'm still facebook friends with my ex who likes the Sabres (one of the reasons why I could never learn to love that team), and she told me the Sens were going down... In what seemed to be the longest first period of my life, the Sens were up 4-1 or 4-2, and with 6 minutes left in the third period the Sabres scored another goal, I believe it was the first goal scored against Craig Anderson outside of the first period.
I told her after the game, "So uh... you said I should be rooting for the winning team... What was the score of tonight's game?"

No way in feth that ref could honestly see the puck. Whistle should have been blown at least a full second or two before the Sabers were allowed to spear Price into the net.

The Central division is getting ridiculous, again.
I can't wait until next year when Winnipeg moves to the west, and they pull someone from the Central into the east.
Columbis, Detroit, or Nashville, it'll be one of those three. I'd love to see Detroit move to the east, so they aren't playing in as many differant time zones as they are right now, but it will most likely be Nashville that moves, since they'll slide in pretty easily into the South East division, which is what the Jets will be leaving.

That's official? I think it makes much more sense to move the Wings to the East... but damn, I'll definately miss that rivalry.
*sigh* Sens can't seem to get anything really going. They're playing pretty inconsistently. Some of their games have been blowouts, and other times they can't seem to get it done and lose in a shootout.

He's a not so good goalie who just happened to have a hot year last year. If he always played like he did last year, he wouldn't have been bouncing around the NHL like he has been.

5 game skid. While I'm pleased with this turn of events, it is a bit dissapointing. They still haven't even made a real road trip yet this season. They better figure out how to pull their heads from their third point of contact.
Yah... and I think they get the Wings at Joe Lewis...
Yep, last two games between the teams will be in the Joe. But I'm talking a real road trip, 4 or 5 games up and down the Pacific Coast type of trip.

Oh yeah... that's coming up.
Blues lost to last year's Stanley Cup winner.
We need our goalie back in a real bad way... the team's defense seemed off too.
More then just the defense. They averaged 7 shots a period. They were outshot by the team with the worst offensive record in the league, until tonight at least.
St. Louis is in a serious funk right now. Getting embarrased by Detroit and Nashville? It's going to happen. Getting embarassed by this years Kings? Yeah... hang your heads in shame.

Buck, a native St. Louisan whose dad Jack Buck was one of the Blues’ original broadcasters, has season tickets with the team. Once he got on the air, the idea was that he might help change the club’s luck. The Blues, in the midst of a slump, trailed 2-0 at the time.
But it didn’t take long for LA to score with Buck in the booth, alongside regular play-by-play announcer John Kelly and analyst Darren Pang:
“All right, so, uh here’s Carter bringing it out with Kopitar in the middle over to the left wing and … uh … here is a … GOAL scored by 44 ... Drewwwwiske. ... I clearly bring no mojo to the party.”

Here's hoping the Sens can kick the crap outa the Make-ya-Laughs on Sat night!
Reimer's currently injured, so it'll likely be Scrivens in goal and when he stinks, he stinks bad.
Leafs need to start going on their traditional mid to late season massive losing streek... God forbid they make the play-offs - Leafs Nation will almost certainly be trying to parade the Cup up and down Bay Street before the 1st round even gets going!

I don't get to watch the game tonight unfortunately. We don't get NBCSP at work, and it won't be on FSM.
Bummer!
I'll try to post updates for ya. I guess you're implying that you work at night at Scott...
There's some "disreputable" streaming sites... not sure how robust the base's internet policy.. (yet, you can post on Dakka...wierd). Want me to find you some sites?

I won't be able to see any of the streaming sites. I can't even stream the game on a service I pay for, like on NHL.com. I work afternoons this month. Midshifts next month. Rotates monthly. Kinda blows.

LET'S GO BLUES!
Automatically Appended Next Post: And just like that... Wings up 1-0.
At the start of the season, even a lot of Wings fans were throwing in the towel, saying it was the end of the dynasty. I stuck true to them though. Glad to see my estimations of them have been paying off.
And TooToo gets his first point of the season! We certainly didn't hire him for his puck handling skills.

heh... nice.
Even the NBC announcers are saying the Blues' defense are too passive...
If they don't get their act together, Doug Armstrong (Blues' GM) will be trading someone good/popular to shake things up. The players aren't going to tank it to get rid of Hitch, like they did with the previous two coaches.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Blues got a short handed goal...
Sweet Emprah djones... even you would appreciate that play... that was some mad skillz there!
Feth... Erik Karlsson was taken out with an injury... Seems pretty fething deliberate by Matt Cooke. Was hit into the wall by Cooke, who then came down on Karlsson's left ankle... Sliced his achilles tendon.
That long break seems to have hurt Detroit. 1 shot in the third period, not good at all. That's two games in a row they've pretty much sucked. At least they got that point though, still ahead of the Blues, and technically Nashville now as well.
Alfndrate wrote: Feth... Erik Karlsson was taken out with an injury... Seems pretty fething deliberate by Matt Cooke. Was hit into the wall by Cooke, who then came down on Karlsson's left ankle... Sliced his achilles tendon.
There was absolutely nothing malicious about the hit.
Cook was simply angling Karlsson to take him into the boards and pin him with his knee/leg between Karlsson's legs. It's a standard play that happens all the time.
Unfortunately, Karlsson was trying to stop so he wouldn't hit face first, and so Cook's skate came down on his lower leg.
Normally you'd get at most a skate burn or perhaps a light flesh wound - I've been kicked a few times myself when I played and never had a cut that couldn't be handeled by some super glue!
But NHL skates are pretty much kept at 'limb-removing razor-sharpness' as much as possible. (some guys will even have the equipment manager re-sharpen their skates after a shift if they feel like they've blown an edge!)
This has been a dissapointing year so far. People were forecasting that the Wings would fall off this year without Lindstrom, and now their crowing that they were right, but it really has little to do with that.
We've got so many injuries are team is just in tatters. Nearly two full lines made up of AHL'ers. Almost all of our offense comes from our first two lines, and after 17 games of carrying the team, their starting to get tired and can't keep up the pace.
If we want to salvage this season, we have to get healthy soon. Franzen and Bertuzzi need to get back in the game. Helm needs to get back. We've got to get our D back... Otherwise our 21 year streak will get snapped, and it'll be purely because we've spent a quarter of the season so far being the Detroit Griffons.
djones520 wrote: Jimmy Howards first shut out of the season, as the Wings blank the Predators 4-0. Glad to see them pick some steam back up.
Nice, Sens are tied at 2 with the Maple Leafs, and while they're playing... I'm trying out NHL 2013... not bad, I'm learning a lot about the game just from playing it... I think I had 1 goal and 3 or 4 penalties in my first game... third game... I'm up to 7 goals... most hockey isn't like this lol...

Actually for a second I thought the Sens were gonna lose it, especially if it got down to a shootout...
Sorry to burst your bubble, but we have fewer players than we have cups for them to drink out of!
It's been 20 years since the Habs last won a cup. That doesn't mean anything today. There isn't even anyone on the team who played for the Habs in the 90's, let alone then.
DeathReaper wrote: So, now that the Blackhawks won again today and are 12-0-3, Who do you guys think is the second best team in the NHL?
The Blackhawks...
Since the Blackhawks won again (15-0-3) Clearly the Blackhawks are the best team in the NHL. 33 points for the Hawks, and 11 ahead of the Blues. No other team is at 30 yet. Anaheim being the closest at 27 points, I have to ask you again:
Who do you guys think is the second best team in the NHL?
Follow up question: What is it like watching your team lose in regulation? Because I have no idea what that is like yet.

I was being cheeky... hey look! You're being cheeky too!
Yea... they're fething awesome now... I'll concede that they're the best now.
As to who's the 2nd best team? I have no fething clue... it's pretty wide open imo.

It's been awhile since I've seen a live game being played, but I get updates to my phone, and seeing the Sens lose in regulation sucks especially when it's a goal scored in like the last minute, because then you know there really is no coming back and tying it up. Though with that said, I dislike seeing them lose in a shootout as well, because as much of a goaltending beast Craig Anderson is, he seems like he has a little trouble in the one on one.
Though anecdotally, I've been playing career mode and got drafted to the Oilers (sad day). My first game with them, I had scored 2 goals, and as I was out from my line shifts, the Wilds scored 3 times (we were tied at 2), We managed to tie it all up in the third period with me getting a break away goal 10 seconds into overtime high up on the stickstide of the goalie to win it... I know it's a video game, but I've yet to see (in the short time I've been paying attention to this sport) anyone come back from three goals down in a period to win it...
I am honestly surprised that the Ducks are where they are this season. Bruins could be a top contender just they haven't played that many games compared to everyone else so fresher.
Seems weird the way that eastern side is broken down. I'd have thought that the division with Pitt and Columbus would also have the Florida teams, and that the Rangers and/or Islanders would be with the Sabres and them northern sides.

Yeah, but it does sorta makes sense in that those eastern team division works well with advertising/TV strategy.
I'm interested in this. Tampa will no longer be making annual trips to the play offs because they won't be the best worst team in a horrible division. Plus Detroit will no longer be stacked with the power houses that currently reside in the central division, and much fewer time changes when on the road.

This move will help the Wings stay in playoff contention. But, the Timezone + new rivalries are huge for Wings.

I've no clue what Coach MacLean looks like... or most of the players, though playing a few pick up games in NHL 13 has helped with the players. I could probably talk to Anderson, Karlsson, Alfredson, or any number of the Sens, and I'd probably wouldn't recognize them.

Wasn't there a game against Florida where there was a guy sitting behind him that looked exactly like him? I remember the commentators poking fun at him... Idk, could have been someone else...
I mean I'm sure I could have seen him earlier if I clicked the links from the Sens' Twitter account
No game for the Sens until Thursday
Edit: Also it is not an awesome 'stache, it's a bitchin' 'stache
The next chance the Blackhawks have at a loss (In regulation) will be March 16th Vs. the Stars or March 20th Vs. the Mighty Ducks.
Teams they will beat (or at least get one point from until then)
The Blues Feb 28
The Blue Jackets March 1
The Red Wings March 3
The Wild March 5
The Avalanche March 6
The Avalanche March 8
The Oilers March 10
The Blue Jackets March 14
That's 16 more points!
If they play like this they will win the cup again this year.
1 goal game on Columbus, had to take Edmonton to OT. That's two NEAR wins against two of the worst teams in the NHL.
Chicago is probably slowing down a bit. They had to go to a Shoot out with Vancouver, while Detroit just wrecked them 8-3 (second night in a row playing for Detroit).

But the Blue Jackets? Meh... they need time. The good thing is that John Davidson is running the show... and thats GOOD. Just look at the Blues.

The Browns? I don't follow them, so I don't know.
You're also forgetting about the Reds and the Bengals
Also the Cleveland Indians tend to look good right up until about the All-Star Break, and then we just crumble... And the Browns are gak sadly :-\

You missed ballball teams I actually think the Reds are major contender (I'm a Cardinal fan).
Did forget the Bengels... don't they always have good offence but suspect defense? I always keep expecting them to do some damage...
Are the Browns still in "expansion team" mode?
Back to hockey... you might wanna give the Blue Jacket a chance... John Davidson is the right man to turn around a struggling team. The Blues were literally GUTTED and had to stink up the joint for several years in order to get where they're at now.
As I said earlier in the thread, I'm not rooting for the blue jackets because Cleveland (where I'm from) doesn't get along too much with Columbus . Also I'd sooner cheer for the Lake Erie Monsters
