You are all too kind! Thanks for stopping by.
I think I may have made the NMM chrome too subtle for fear of overdoing it. Next time brighter colours!
I'm not sure about doing hazard stripes on that chainsaw - I don't think it would look right.
Has anyone noticed that the morrisey priest has one hand twice the size of the other? Damn citadel and their giant hands!
Next up I'm repainting the redemptionist leader type dude. Here is how I painted him last time, I did a great job considering my relative inexperience at the time - but this is such a great miniature I had to have another crack at it! Say goodbye to the old paintjob;
OLD PAINT-JOB NOT A NEW ONE!

I'm trying to get the first stage as creamy smooth as possible these days by doing a little wet blending with white after the usual process of primer, wash, drybrush. Getting a model smooth on a macro scale is hard but needs to be mastered. I should get to grips with my airbrush.

Lol, Dammit Weety! now i cannot unsee that giant hand :-( it's like someone blew up a plastic fake one and popped it on! Aaargh!
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Yes - Its a great model if you ignore the hand - but now you cannot unsee!
Anyone have any suggestions to what free hand techniques etc I might try on the redemptionist? Marble worked out very well (thanks for the suggestion dysartes) so I feel like trying more stuff out.
My marble recipe. Mix up P3 green ink (emerald green colour) and some armour wash until its darkened enough and apply a thin layer, then take a little of the mixture and stir it into white until its just off-white green and draw gently curving lines roughly parralel to each other, then add another layer of the ink and another layer of stripes, repeat.

How about you try for a velvet effect on the robes? would make them look heavier and richer for the model? Pyriel did it on one of his GK's I think or it may have been Coteaz? i'll see if I can find it if you want?

weety very beautiful ma'am. Lovely marble, and nice to see another marble fan out there it sure is fun to paint! This project line is drawing you to some really cool artistic places! I love the mood you are in
AS to what nerdy mentioned on 3 third mini up...the gun..?..i have to agree just a bit that the sky/earth effect, which i think it is, is coming across not super strong simply because the palette is so muted, which works perfectly for the overall mini, but i think the previous gun came out better because you didnt use a skyearth effect and the nmm worked as it was with the palette as well. Just my thoughts. But gorgeous nonetheless!

Nerdfest - yes please do send me a link - I like to look at other peoples stuff - learn things etc. I did go with a velvety look in the end.
I agree beebop, brighter colours wouldn't have worked so well on him - next time will be better!
A close up on the redemptionist. I wanted to do another subtlle job but somthing told me to use bright colours and try and make him subtle anyway. I'm pleased with him, especially the NMM melta barrel.

For the record, in case I forget Its P3 red ink in layers, followed by a mix of green and black wash, with wet blended flesh tone for the highlight.
NMM seems to be default for me now, but maybe I should get some of the new fancy metallics like vallejo liquid gold?

I don't think rainbow axes are to everyone's taste! Like Marmite. Glad you four like it. I can also do lightning for those who hate rainbows. When I painted this I was thinking of the way hot iron in a forge goes from yellow to red then to blue as it cools.
Thanks for that picture gitsplitta that gives me a clue.

amazing work weety. i just love the muted but colourful tones, your models have a really sophisticated feel to them.
i particularly like the redemptionist . the NMM on the melta barrel is amazing, but i also love the shadin. g on the cloth (especially the chest) and the finish you got for the book he is holding is perfect.
the tech marine also looks great. is he an older model or a custom built piece?
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Hi San76 and thankyou for the compliment! I've come a long way. The techmarine is all from the early nineties excepting he has a custom mantis warriors shoulder pad.

Weety if anyone is going to pull off a rainbow axe blade with the feeling of grimdark its you. I will refrain from any overly obvious rainbow jokes. It really is lovely, but i have to say, the handle i almost like more. It looks a bit like jade or some such semi precious stone. Really has fantastic depth.
Gorgeous work as usual madame

Wonderful work - interested to know what you did with the Mantis shoulder pad.
One critique - and can't believe I'm going to say this, but the hazard stripes on the bolt pistol are a little too much - I wonder if the yellow should be dulled / dirtied somewhat or possibly just go for either plain black or metal similar to the servo arm?
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Perhaps I could dull the stripes a touch - they are a little luminous. A thin layer of grey wash oughta sort it. I will get some pics of the mantis head in a mo.
First though here is a very old techmarine. My first NMM copper on the blow torch. Maybe he needs something? Suggestions?

Black crenelations on the bottoms of the lower leg armor?

Hmm, yeah it does need something extra on bare leg armour... Gits could be onto something with the crenalation design and possibly a freehand icon or skull on one or both legs?

Is the third Techmarine another rather old one, weety?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Hey weets... I found another tech marine that I'd missed earlier. Same era as the last one you posted but a different figure. When I get that other servitor built I'll send them both along.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Oh cool! I like those old ones.
Crenelation is possible - as are skulls, but first I thought I'd get the third techmarine on the go. The third techmarine is a modern one - he looks better IRL honest! A bit grainy in the pic. Not finished yet. In fact none are finished they all need a bit of last minute touching up and stuff.
I spent a whole hour last night dusting one shelf of miniatures over the sink (two shelves left to dust!). What a chore. I must get a glass fronted cabinet for them.

No Commissions left to paint now. I need a commission soon or I will starve! Honest. Perhaps it will help if I am less cagey about prices.
Roughly speaking I am charging minimum wage for my painting ATM. That's £6.31 an hour. As a rough guide it would take me 4 hours to do a normal sized character standard work so that's £25. Or I could probably knock up a 5 man squad of high tabletop standard in 10 hours so £63.10, if they were squats it would be quicker, say 6 hours (£38). I also charge for postage back to you, and an extra £2 per model for clean up and assembly (unless its a techmarine with 6 arms, then I will need to charge more). I am extremely perfectionist about prep so you can expect to get you moneys worth there. If I like your model I may even polish it with jewelers rouge for free.
I will accept payment by paypal in which case I will want half upfront (non-refundable) and the other half upon delivery. If you want to pay by cheque I will happily accept but I will need all the payment at once and will have to wait for it to cash before I post.
Finally I would just like to say that I will do my best to paint everything to the highest standard (roughly within the time agreed) and I think this is a real bargain. I'm keeping my prices low atm because I would much rather be doing this for minimum wage than shop work. At some point if my work proves popular I will increase prices so get em while they're hot!
Anyway enough business, back to the miniatures. I have been painting this storm trooper because he seemed lonely and I felt sorry for him.

This year as a special gift to myself I bought some plastics (for variety). I got an empire duelist made from bits and a plastic multipart chaos warrior, two of the old high elf plastics, spearman and archer, and a plastic high elf mage. Unfortunately Tomb King skeletons (the basic ones, that is) are pretty rubbish. They're relics from 10 years ago (or something- like two or three editions anyways).
The Tomb Kings special models, though... Mummies, Tomb Guard, the various Statuary and the Carrion... Top Notch, perhaps some of the best models GW has made for the Fantasy line.

Post by: weetyskemian44
Anvildude The ones I brought look pretty cool - they are chariot champions and a bit more interesting than the basic skeletons. I got a box of the basic ones too anyway, on the basis that you can never have to many skeletons. Unfortunately the cool mummies I was bidding on escaped out of my financial grasp.
Thanks miss dee its a nice shad of green isn't it. I'll be using that one again.
Speaking of relics from many editions ago I picked up these for next to nothing, just for something to mess about with.

Lots of skeletons arrived today. Just the bog standard ones. Here's one I put together - I will make a little GS skull for his shield boss.
And heres some more ink experiments, once again I was trying to make a sort of grey colour by mixing red and green ink. It looked perfect when it went on but then it separated as it dried giving this weird effect.
I've been developing something of a passion for the empire recently and I have a fancy to paint an character on a horse. I've never painted a horse.

Experimenting over for a while. Going to do a nice paintjob on these just so I can say I've painted high elves. A couple of coats of armour wash and some careful highlighting puts them back on the right track.

The scavvy with his skin complaints is top notch and a great comparison of your evolving skills / styles from the earlier version (both great in their own rights though).
Plastic Chaos Warrior is epic, the armour colouring is so so smoothly done and really complements the brass / gold.
Your expiremental ink wash would look great on gun barrels and vehicle exhausts as it has the effect you seen when metal gets super hot...

Post by: monkeytroll
Agreed, that is a great effect for exhausts etc.

Hi there!
The next stage on the elves was to wet blend in Vallejo flesh tone (basically beige) in all the skin, gold and hair areas.
Next I added the first layer of colour washes to the cloth, wood and leather, using blue, sepia and a red/sepia mix. As it turns out I think you can still see the results of my experiment shining through in the armour - if you look close you can see very pale warm and cold tints, which I think makes the illusion of reflective metal more convincing
Next are highlights to the gold and the wood, flesh wash, and gems.

Glad you noticed the wood - bit of a special effort on the bow.
I've won a few more bits on ebay; a dark vengeance librarian, a Tomb King, an empire drummer and I've still got my sights set on painting a character on horseback.
Tomorrow I go back to painting ugly things. Here's the skeletons assembled

Well if you decide to do that, send me a pic of the figure and I will make you a quote. It sounds like something I would enjoy painting. I just have the urge to paint horses, with dappling and socks and all that other horse stuff. I think I saw a model where the painter had really captured the dappling effect and now I have to try it.

My dark vengeance librarian piece turned up yesterday - a taxi driver found it under his car out in the car park. Lucky for me he came and rang the bell. In the post persons defense it was in the tiniest packet ever. Slight damage but its all in one piece.
I didn't know dark vengeance were all snap together! Looks like something out of a kinder egg. Still its quite good once its together, but it felt like my creative input was being left out of the loop.
Anyway I was very busy this morning and finished all the plastic stuff I'd started.

Completely agree, and it would never had occurred to me. Thanks Rug!
The skeletons are really decent! I've gone back through your older work and I'm always impressed with your work. The consistency from piece to piece is impressive, especially since you are all over the hobby with different miniatures, color schemes, etc.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Well Thanks skalk - I could never stick to just one thing.
Here's my last minute entry to yourr competition as I'm painting it. It is an air vent. Made out of junk - the propeller is a spinning top I got in last years Xmas cracker, around that is a pipe offcut, then there is a piece of an ork wartrack frame, a circuit board bit, a fuse and an old rhino box. Needs rust.
2
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Well that's that banged out! I only managed to paint this so fast by baking it under a 60 watt bulb between paint layers! I'm pretty pleased - its not exactly a junk pile per say but its made of junk and its rusty so I hope it counts

Post by: weetyskemian44
yes monkey it could be their air-con system - or you could put it on a death star at the end of a trench at a pinch?
Dr H - I'm not sure if that neatness won't count against me in a junk pile comp - I had hoped to get some small junk to have lying around the vent but in the event I just didn't have time - I'm too distracted by painting for this modelling malarkey.
The paint job was built up in layers using watered down ink for shade and grey and white spray paint for the highlights. I watered down the green ink to an almost homeopathic level to get that sheen of verdigris on the fan. The rust colour is just a bit of flesh wash splattered about. Automatically Appended Next Post: Some new stuff ready to paint!

Really looking forward to seeing that Musician! So many folds and creases, so many fiddly bitz. No doubt you are going to do something great with it.
Regarding the contest entry- you did a really nice job with it and I'd put that anywhere on my table. Clean doesn't count against anyone. Junk is junk. I never specified it has to be rotted and rusted, that's just how most people decided to do theirs. My son gave me an idea that has stuck since we talked about it- not everything has to be old, and even old things decay at different rates. Smart lad that one.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
But if I'd had more time I would have added something more to it - small stuff, maybe some discarded containers or some ivy, just to bring it to life and suggest scale. I just plain forgot until I looked at monkeys thread on sunday!
The Drummer guy is great. I'm enjoying the empire's dress sense its very 16th century Landsknecht mercenary. I might have to get some more.
A wip shot of the drummer.
And this is my first horseman. Now I've got this I'm a bit daunted by it. Should I paint the horse and the man separately? I think I will loosely pin him in then I can do it either way. He arrived undercoated like this because I couldn't afford to get a new one.

29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
That's one way of looking at it yes. I'd like to learn how other people paint with these thick paints! Just for variety of style. But for speed and subtlety I like my washes and inks, I get ease of application and it shows up detail well - I think it only really falls down where the underlying detail is muddled or badly cast. Then one needs something thicker to cover it up!
14392
Post by: nerdfest09
Stick with what you do best i say! it's something you learn individually and the response you get from all your painted mini's speaks for itself! what you do works well! :-) I can't paint like you and couldn't if I tried but I can damn well appreciate the talent and final product!
62749
Post by: Dr H
I think it's good to learn new techniques and skills to add to, but not change, the way you do things.
I, like many people, really like the way you paint, Weety and wouldn't want to see it change. Part of the appeal is that it is a unique look that you achieve.
But the addition of a different way of painting can only be a good thing as it will broaden your horizons and you may find a technique that will help or enhance what you already do.
I'm sure I was building up to a "point" there... I'll leave it with this: Learning is fun.
Drummer looks great too.
26139
Post by: Skalk Bloodaxe
Do you ever sleep? The turnaround on that drummer staggers me, especially because of the quality. How many miniatures do you figure you've painted in your lifetime so far?
Regarding the horse / rider I'd say do them as separate pieces. You'll have more control of both and less difficulty w/ fiddly things like the space between the saddle and the rider.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Erm - somewhere around 500 at a guess, well since I started really painting anyway, experimental daubings aside.
Actually I sleep a lot. Got to keep the hands steady! Steady hands are important for fast painting and I do my best work when rested and in a meditative state of mind.

Here's what I've been up to since xmas.
I've been trying to put together a small empire force, here's some troops I came up with:
Also I finally got around to starting my river troll (a gift from inmygravenimage).
First I inked him up:
Then flesh tones followed by a red wash:
He will get a lot more work. Also check out the skull buried in the base.
62749
Post by: Dr H
Nice. I like the flesh tone you gave him. After the first picture I was expecting him to be green Colour theory at work.
Still love the wood you paint. Tempted to send you some of my boxes just to see them painted better than I can manage.
29449
Post by: weetyskemian44
Thanks H, I wanted him to look like he is covered in a slimy layer of pond goo. So he is just green tinged.
The wood is quite simple atm its just an umber wash and a white drybrush. I'm thinking of washing it with some grey mixed with olive green and then I will sepia up the binding rope.
The teeth need more highlights and some yellowing, I need to pick a colour and style for the eyes (they are quite big so I can go to town on them), the hair needs more black and I might give the skin a skin wash to tone down the bruised pink look.

More empire stuff turned up today. Look at these fancy lads with their get up. I read today that the reason the original greatsworders dressed like this was because as crack troops they benefited from a relaxation of the sumptuary laws, which forbade commoners from wearing anything fancy, or purple.

Ah thankyou dstein! I'm really liking it too. I love the historical pastiche of The Empire. I've been reading all about the history of the holy roman empire so as to get a feel for it. Apart from hippogriffs and the colleges of magic they pretty much pinched from history wholesale. There were even flagellants and witch-hunters...
Precious little progress painting wise - I've basically done this standard bearer's armour and also designed him a flag, made up of some holy roman empire flags I've spliced together - going to go library tomorrow and see if I can get it printed (maybe even get yarrick's flag done too).

36940
Post by: Anvildude
Yeah- the Longswordsmen from the Empire are basically based on the Landschnekhts of the real world- and they did specifically dress super fancy to show off that they were skilled enough to be given a pass on the sumptuary laws. They were also called Doppelsoldner, possibly due to being payed double the going rate, or that they used double-handed swords, or that they were twice the man compared to other men.

 twice as big!
I never made it too the library so no flag yet - I had to help out with redecorating. There's always something falling apart in our flat and today its the paintwork.
I prefer to paint tiny things so I found time in between scraping window frames to put a lick of paint to the standard bearer. I'm very pleased with the results and I absolutely promise to go get that flag soon. I'm really inexperienced with flags.

dsteingass wrote:I think these guys prefer the term "Historical re-enactors" but it's basically the same thing
In Germany, at least, it's a pretty serious thing that people will spend thousands on to achieve a perfect, period authentic, costume. I've been to the Königsberg castle event in bavaria, and LARP is not really descriptive when you have thousands of people there and the jousters go full tilt and bash the hell out of each other. Army encampment hundreds of people strong, medieval stalls (none of which sold the typical fairy, new age, or other schlock that would have seen you burnt in the middle ages), full jousting arena that seated thousands of people and jousters from around the world that went at it full bore.
See all the annual Battle of Hastings reenactment. I was there in 2012, and there were over 1000 guys on the battlefield with horse included. There were maybe 50ish knights on horse, and somewhere around 600-700 Norman foot vs say 300-450 English foot at the top of the ridge. Out either side is a full military encampment with nothing not period authentic.
Also Sherwood Forest's Festival of History, with encampments dating back to the Romans up through modern british military. All perfectly authentic.
Comparing them to LARP or US Ren Faires isn't really fair. They aren't the 'I use my plus three longsword of slaying....' scene (now there are plenty of those people who also do this sort of thing, but there are also plenty who don't).
48594
Post by: dsteingass
That's true..no foam swords etc. Around here, we have American Civil War re-enactments like that, all the muskets are really packed (without lead of course) and shot, full cavalry with Horses, etc. Quite a sight to see. Those guys spen the weekends camping, eating, and living like they did as well for the whole experience.

I don't think there's a single person that would feel the need to strip something you've painted of late.

Ooo flattery! Me likey.
I just checked ebay and some swine just outbidded me for a bunch of old metal empire troops. Oh the humanity! Cruelly jilted me of my prize, damn them, damn them all to hell.
Oh well I suppose I could use the money to buy something practical...

You've got plenty of spoons and underwear I'd guess..BID AGAIN!

But I'm short on forks, knives and overcoats.
I didn't win I'm afraid. Its January so I just don't have the spending power. Eventually they will be mine. These are the ones I'm after: (but its getting to the point where I might go plastic to save money)

Let me take a look through my stash of old metal Empire models - I may have a couple of them going spare... Will check Saturday morning and let you know if it's Yay or Nay - most likely will be the handgunners...

Such generosity! That's pretty cool of you.
Of course I might end up with some anyway because I went straight out and bid £5 for four handgunners (someone is almost guaranteed to outbid me for £5.50, and I need the money for food at this point)
I have succesfully bought a greatsword champion though! Before you know it I will have a very small army.

Any of these take your fancy?
Only handgunners, no swordsmen.
I have no particular need for them and while I could sell them on eBay, I really can't be bothered at the moment... If' you can work your wonders with them I'll happily donate to the cause...

Cool!
Another troll has been spotted, lurking under a bridge.
This is how I do the trolls
I wanted to give my river trolls a greenish tinge to give them that slimy look, so I started with a wash of P3 green ink, P3 red ink and P3 armour wash in a 2:1:7 ratio. After that's dried I drybrush with white and wet blend vallejo skin tone into the fleshy areas. Next a wash of vallejo red wash (a very cherry red), followed by vallejo flesh wash and more red ink worked into the shadows of the skin and the mouth, finally I pick out details like the teeth and claws, the eyes and his bones n stones.
Some stuff I picked up recently

That troll looks fantastic! And I have that Greatsword guy, painted him about 12 years ago... haven't looked at him in months (since I had a game of Fantasy), I remember being proud of how he turned out, but I'm really looking forward to seeing how yours looks.
Thanks for the inspiration!

No probs D. I will send the whole thing back, it'll help cushion the model. Do you want it primed? I have a choice of white, grey or midnight blue.
Hi Hdbbstephen and thanks for commenting. the greatsworder will be fun to paint, hes already primed so maybe you'll see him soon.

No probs. I've got one more day of work to get through and then I'm on a break so I can get started on that.
Speaking of projects, inmygravenimage has sent me a commission, I owe him one because of all the free ogres and trolls.
Unfortunately. a kitbashed plastic mini doesn't post well when sent with a bag of metal ogres (but thanks for the ogres graven!). So it needs a little reassembly!
I'll go check out the pics in gravens blog later and see how its all supposed to fit together.
Looks like my cutting mat needs a wash.

Mah army of fancy pants is increased, big thanks to Ruglud for the majority of these troops. At this rate the empire may soon strike back.
And I took a little time off from being on holiday and painted the empire gun captain. He needs a couple of mortars to captain, but I need to eat and pay bills, its a conundrum.

You're in serious danger of having an actual army at this rate btw, were any of those guys I sent missing arms?

I think there may have been an arm shortfall - I'll get back to you.

Miss Dee here's your Harley Quinn model ready for paint - I'll try and get it in the post tomorrow.
Graven here's the postman and his servo-skull.
And here's progress on the regiment. I have to decide what colour to do them now. Its definitely having red in it.

Excellent, so glad to see a proper paint job on those Handgunners - I got those guys off a friend with truly dodgy paint work so stripped them down - then they sat in my box for ever more. Really exciting seeing them progress now

Yes, and a great cuppa joe!
We watched 4 episodes yesterday and I think it destroyed my mind. I blew a funny fuse. David lynch. Mmmmm.
I was a bit worried about the bright colours on the handgunners, but sod it they will look normal next to the greatsworders. Does anyone else think the plumes look luminous?
Miss dee its just a matt acryllic car primer, Hope you don't mind its what I always use? Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh here's some more shots of the regiment. Nearly got a whole army now - I just need some spearmen and a cannon and maybe some knights.

Those boys are excellent, great job Weety, very Empire eccentric in their pink pyjamas - they couldn't have asked for a better home to go to. Would love to see them standing with the Greatswords...
I'll have to have another dig through my box of metal and see what turns up, pretty sure I have more unpainted Empire lads...

The plastic or metal spearmen? Same question regarding the cannon, for that matter.
Bonus points if you do Knights Panther. Any thoughts on Wizards?
