Hey Gitsplitta! Ha - Funny the similarity in our names.

I recently joined DakkaDakka and have been seeking out the other Ork threads. I really like what I see!

Thank you! I have noticed you're posting on a lot of the threads I'm subbed to. Good for you! Lots of good stuff on dakka. Make yourself at home!

Though... once you get established this could get very confusing...

Hang on...I'm not sure this has been thought through properly.

You've been cloning Gits.

With all these Git-clones running around think how fast the MW thread is going to snowball. It'll reach critical mass in no time and form a black-hole in the dakka-sphere.

Unless....

unless that was your plan all along ?

Well, Gutsplitta actually had a perfectly good avatar of his own making before being convinced to mimic mine... so he'll be fine. The rest of you... NO EXCUSES! You'd best listen to Papa Tides before he unloads his moderatatorial beat stick on you.

@RiTides: Yep, have big plans for working on my orks, also helping the kids out with their Nids and Necrons. I'll still be doing MW on occasion... so their'll be a steady diet of those too. Right now I'm actually going to take a bit of time to finish a few MW models that I had *mostly* done, but not completely done. Then it'll be off to my orks... probably finish my grot tanks to begin with. I've also been sending Ifalna a steady diet of special orksies... which she does masterfully of course. That will continue and I'm hoping between the two of us we can get my ork army looking all proppa again.

Yeah, I guess it's the "Dad voice" coming out again .

Comparing it to the invasion of Alpharius avatars is a good comparison, though- awesome for it's time, but like anything else, the time comes when seeing a page full of the same avatar runs its' course

Like I said, really looking forward to seeing more here! I'm trying to get more active in this section when I'm able to check on at home and see pictures, and hopefully will be contributing my own blog for the rest of the dreadnought army soon. Good to start with following one of the blogging gurus on here

Fantastic! I've got so many pages to go back through and read, I think I need a summary... of your blogs I've been through the Mantic Warriors one the most, but even that one I've only really scratched the surface of.

@CaptainS: It IS bad.

@RiTides: I'll be anxiously awaiting your new blog... consider me subscribed!

Well, my little one built me a tankbusta for Christmas and is finally getting around to painting it all on his own. He wanted me to post his progress, so I'll put this on his blog and the other in hopes of schmoozing a few comments for him to read (he's young and uncertain... still needs lots of encouragement). I'm actually looking forward to getting this bad-boy in my force... only have one other tankhammer and someone needs to be free from shooting to release the bomb squigs!

As for your boys paint job, well done! Looking great!

Big thing when my girls first started painting with me was to make sure I focused my time on them, instead of trying to be working on my own stuff at the same time. They never got big into mini painting, but both have really blossomed in their own art forms (paint on canvas, photography, ...). All about the encouragement.

Thanks Gits. Knowing your standard, that's a huge compliment. In some ways I feel like I'm learning to paint all over again. That figure was painted over 10 yrs ago (man I'm getting old), then I switched to a lot of historical stuff for years and now starting back into 40K and Orks. You know tipios... I don't think so. I mean I'm nowhere near done with the tank... but looking it over there isn't much that could be construed as "glowing" in the model. Perhaps I'll add something... we'll see.

If I recall correctly... black, heavy tin bitz dry brush, lighter dwarf bronze dry brush, delvan miracle wash.

Very interesting idea there toebeard... I'll have to consider that. Some unstable nuclear material tossed in with my grots might be amusing & foment some entertaining fluff!

Looking awesome as always!

A couple of picky notes to do as with you will:

1) It always seems odd to me, given the slap dash nature of Orks, that they can paint their dags and checks so cleanly - and yet - I do prefer them that way. Case in point - you have obviously used decals for the checks on the sides, and these are awesome. You have obviously painted the checks on the turret - more Orky perhaps, but looks less good - especially when you have such an awesome example elsewhere on the tank... For some reason, the painted dags and flames don't seem to detract nearly as much though - perhaps due to the single colour, the natural curves, or the lack of pristine examples...

2) The green writing is an odd colour choice, and I find english words on Orks odd - or at least very difficult to include appropriately. Appropriate glyphs may have suited it better. Funnily enough - I have no issue with your AV14 number plate...

3) "Water" stains appear too thick and well defined.

4) Interesting choices of colour for the rokkits, though I think my real issue with them is that they are too plain and/or too clean compared with the rest of the model.

5) Some of the brown paint mud splatter/chipping seems a bit thick.

6) I may have highlighted the Grot more...

On the up side:

7) All decals appear to have been expertly applied and weathered.

8) Except for the checks, freehand is great if not quite perfect.

9) Mud/powder use looks great - though you might want to add a couple of different varieties for some variation in colour.

10) Metalwork, especially the brass, is awesome.

11) Some of the weathering on the larger nuts and bolts is spot on.

I would be proud to own such a piece.

Apologies for the long list - I bet you weren't expecting that much from your PM - but I'm deep in the middle of assessing the 42 Infinity painting competition entries - so I'm on a roll for extracting as much as possible as I can. I only hope its helpful

Thanks Arakasi... so many good comments to respond to...

The funny part is that the checks under the turrett aren't free hand, they're molded into the figure. I just painted them as-is. So the problem isn't my free-hand (the dags) vs. the decals... it's the decals vs. the sculpt. Your point is well taken though, and I totally get it. I just can't bring myself to hand paint the checks... even though I think they'd look much more authentic that way. I suppose I could have the yellow encroach on the edges of the strip, but then it'd look weird and the outside edges of the strip would be rough while the inside is nice and clean.

2) The green writing is an odd colour choice, and I find english words on Orks odd - or at least very difficult to include appropriately. Appropriate glyphs may have suited it better. Funnily enough - I have no issue with your AV14 number plate...

I just thought it would be nice to introduce a spot of color off-palette for interest... and grots are green after all. The glyph on the back of the turret is actually the "boss" glyph... but the deal with humor is people have to understand it. I could make the best jokes with orky glyphs and what... one person in 500 would take the time to look them up and get it?? I'd rather use a bit of English to get the point across. All of the glyphs I did use mean something in the context of the tank though.

3) "Water" stains appear too thick and well defined.

My first attempt. I should have used Sepia rather than Delvan Mud.

4) Interesting choices of colour for the rokkits, though I think my real issue with them is that they are too plain and/or too clean compared with the rest of the model.

They're based on the colors for the rockets my regular orks carry, so I'm just being consistent with the army rather than specifically choosing them for this model. The reason they're cleaner (and I did put some thought into this), is that they're munitions... they're only on the tank long enough to be fired off... not long enough to accrue a bunch of mud, rust and chips. Now... they could well be manufactured crappily... but it just didn't seem realistic to me to have them all crapped up when they're essentially fired off in an "as new" condition.

5) Some of the brown paint mud splatter/chipping seems a bit thick.

Quite possibly. The reddish speckles are actually supposed to be rust.

6) I may have highlighted the Grot more...

I looked at him carefully & his lower lip, eye socket and finger nails were the last things I did on the piece. He's highlighted all the way up to scorp green. I suppose I could add some more yellow and really bring up some extreme highlights along some edges.

On the up side:

7) All decals appear to have been expertly applied and weathered.

I used a trick I learned from an expert local modeler to help make the edges of the decals disappear. Cover the decal with gloss coat (slightly diluted), then overspray with dull coat. The gloss is thicker and fills in the "step" between the decal edge and the model. Worked pretty well.

8) Except for the checks, freehand is great if not quite perfect.

"Perfect" is not what I was shooting for... see our previous discussion on the checks above.

9) Mud/powder use looks great - though you might want to add a couple of different varieties for some variation in colour.

Actually, I'm scratching my head about this... if you see the previous tank... the two powders I used there were the exact same two I used with the new one, only the difference between the wet and dry mud is much more pronounced. I'm not sure what happened between the two.

Couldn't have asked for better my friend, thank you!

Holy crap Gits...you really went to town with the weathering! Some of the water stains look a bit thick, surreal...as if the edges could be a bit softer.

I think Forge World solves this by applying deluted oil paints and then hitting it with distilled thinner with an air brush (oh, look...another reason to use your beloved airbrush ) to tone it down and blend it into the base paint job.

But still, the chipping and rust is very good. How did you apply the small chip marks...with a sponge? or by flicking your brush?

Brush... took me hours as the chipping actually has two tones (light and dark). Typically with chips you use a "primer color" and an edging which is usually a very light version of the base color. However, no way in Hades that grots are going to prime before they paint, so I went with a bright metal (chainmail) and a very dark one (Vallejo air "black metallic").

I think some of what you guys are responding to are some heavy brown areas that were the result of the very first sepia wash and not actually my "weathering" attempts. I can go in with some yellow and fix those areas up to reduce the drastic appearence of the brown shadow/water effect. (the back of the turret under the "fist" glyph for example).

Great job Gits, very convincing weathering. Love the mud, maye go over in some places wit hthe lighter stuff, not too much though.

Have you thought of wethering your brass with terquiosy wash? awesome paint job had a good mix on one of his vids. I used it and was pleased with the result.

Also onlt other thing I would do is soot effets on the exhaust, and maybe behind where the missiles fire from.

When I get round to painting my tank I hope I can get this sort of look.

Looking forward to the next four

Excellent comments tipios.

If I can figure out how I got the lighter brown color, I'll do it. I thought about weathering the bronze but for some reason the obvious answer didn't occur to me. I'll do that too. And lastly, I usually put soot on my exhausts... I just forgot.

Man you're good... 3 for 3!

Molded checks? Well I never...

Sepia mixed with Badab is quite nice (FW trick that)

Ah - but you haven't pictured your tanks with the rest of your army yet have you? *hint* *hint*. My point still stands - would decals, glyphs or other Orky/Grot scrawlz be out of the question on those Rokkits, just to make it less "plain" (My Ork rokkits are recycled from Dark Angel armour left rusting at the back of the Mek Shop - so there! )

Great, not quite perfect, freehand was including free hand glyphs and dags, not just the checks

But I think everything is in order

You mean all those tiny little specks (no bigger than pin heads) that suround the edges of the panels was done by indivudually painting them with a brush...vs applying the effect by either a sponge or flicking your brush?

I was talking about the blackish or dark brown verticle streaks that you applied near bolt heads, gashes, ect. They were executed well, it is just FW has a better visual delivery that utilizes oils followed by distillants applied through an airbrush to soften the effect. Next time you come over (your turn next gits) I will show you the FW book. It's a neat trick and I think you could pick it up easily since you have you are already use to airbrushes.

I'm going to be picky, but not before saying that this is an outstanding piece. My comments are similar to tipios's, but specifically the metal work plates: they're incongruously un-weathered. I'd expect some gathering and streaking of rust and grime, at raised/damaged areas.
But, this is me being picky. It's a beautiful model and wayyyyyy beyond tabletop as it stands. But you did ask

nice Git you know i love the weathered and beat up style of your tanks.

but the one thing i dislike has to be the modeled on checks but that's beyond your powers. it makes a giant difference between them and the decal checks.

and i have to ask you Git where is this tanks license plate? with the mandatory but completely unregulated contest who can make the funniest tekst?

I really like the tank Git!
But I agree with the checklist made by Arakasi on a couple of points (all the UPs are spot on )
First of all are the rokkits, too clean in a muddy and beaten tank (It may be that they are brand new 'cause the old one have been fired), they just don't blend with the rest.
The writing in English are ok for me, but the green is a strange color, the grots that painted the tank had already yellow and black, why go and find an other color?

I do love the yellow metal plates, they make a proper contrast with the weathering and dirt on the edges and I would leave them as they are.

As I said already: Great job mate!

Well, it seems I'm late to get my comments in. Most of what I have to say has already been said so, not much to add. However, I will make a few comments.

Overall - I really like the tank! Fantastic work, well done I'm sure any one of us would be more than happy to have it in our force or meet it across the tabletop.

Some specific things I really like:

- The colour choices on the rokkits work for me. I like the way they stand out compared to the rest of the model.
- The mud work, weathering and paint chips are great (with two exceptions noted below). I know these are a real time consuming pain to do. Well done for taking the time to do the details.
- The shading on the lenses of the Grot's goggles.

Some areas to improve - some have already been mentioned, but I state them again because they seem to be the most obvious to me:

- The painted checks on the turret vs. the decals elsewhere stand out as inconsistent. Perhaps the resin checks on the turret could have been shaved off so there was space for decals?
- The weathering on the steel plates could use some more rust compared to the rest.
- The weathering (?) on the turrent seems very different from the tank body. The turrent has heavy rust coloured shading in the creases and this is almost non-existant on the tank body. I have the (?) on calling this weathering because it isn't the watermarks or streaks I'm referring to. Hopefully you know what I mean.
- I agree the rokkits should be 'clean' as far as rust and chips go, but perhaps they could have some mud splatters from the drive into the current battle. The launcher itself does, so why not the rokkits?
- Add a schorched effect to the ends of the exhausts and rokkit launcher.

I also thought it would be good to see how this model fits with the rest of the army, because it is quite different in colour from the other one. Some people like a lot of consistency in the tribal aspect of their Orks, others more the rebellious haphazard no two are alike sort of look, still others somewhere in between. I had a look through the rest of your gallery and it seems you sit somewhere in between. So, I think the look compared to the rest fits perfectly. ... Still, it would be nice to have an updated army pic

I would honestly leave it alone on this model. No reason to potentially mess up a perfectly nice mini. My comment should be applied on your next model

Try this out guys. We've just gotten our power back so this work was done by flashlight... hopefully it doesn't look like it too much. I've done my best to address as many of the comments as possible. I've marked up the rockets. The solo on the bottom has kill markings and a blunted nose... that's because it's a dud but the driver likes to use it as a ram. The main rocket has a face on it now, and the others have an arrow with "dakka dakka" written on it and "umie killa" respectively. I re-did the painting on the molded checks in hopes that brightening it up might make it a better match for the decals. Put verdigris on the bronze and rust and oil stains on the moving metal gun elevation mechanism. Also put a little bit of dilute gloss coat on some of the darker mud to make it look wet and increase the contrast between that and the lightest mud.

At this point, I think all I can do is make it worse, so I'm declaring it done. I appreciate all of your great suggestions and hope I haven't actually made things worse.

I'm going to disable voting on the last pic, for those couple of you who voted on it... if you're so inclined please vote on the new pic so your votes get counted.

And now for something completely different...

I think you nailed the missiles! They look a lot more congruent with the rest of the model now, whilst still standing out due to their bright colours.

I'd probably have to look at the images side by side to see the other improvements - I can make out the verdigris - which thankfully doesn't look overdone (always a concern) and I think glossing some of the mud has worked out well.

But then, I probably wouldn't have wanted to potentially screw up what I had before - so very courageous of you and well done too.

Full pic is looking nice!

Thus, I quote myself...
Here's Big Mek Buzzgob giving the troops a... *a-hem*... "pep-talk".

Imagine a hoard of unruly grots that Buzzgob is trying to form into a mob with a purpose. You gather them together, they gibber, they scream, they start to cap each other off. What is a big mek to do?? Easy, get all your biggest, nastiest weapons & your runt herds, point them at the grots is a show of massive force and if anyone gets out of line... *ka-pow*! Easy-peasy.

And I think your other missiles (other Grot tank, left Killa Kan) could use the same treatment now

Yes sir.

You know, I had no idea how a klaxon would be colored. I just assumed it would be made of metal and the inside would be unpainted. If there are standard "klaxon colors", I can certainly use them.

My opponent deployed a little too far forward making an across-the-board turn 2 charge possible. Combine that with his really bad luck shooting at my vehicles and my consistently good luck rolling dice... and it was a long, hard day for the eldar.

Deathrollas did a fair amount of damage in key situations, so they were definitely important in gaining the victory.

Actually Fatty... you aren't far off. Since there's an ork face on the bottom of the turret mount, I wanted the top to look like the top of the head. I didn't make the Oscar-the-Grouch connection though.... which is a major fail on my part. I approve whole-heartedly though!!

@Ice: Thanks! Made more progress after posting that pic. Expect another update tonight.

Teasers from my game this afternoon, full batrep to follow. 1250 pts again with my Grot army using Buzzgob (with my opponents permission). All the units save one were chosen simply because they either were grots or looked like grots when compared to modern orks. (the exception being a couple of deffkoptas who were just filling out points)

The Army:

My Turn 1 roll-on (DoW game):

Failequins, Part II: This is probably going to hurt...

Yeah, I finish up that third grot tank, get two more kans painted & maybe a grot bike or two re-painted and they'll really look like something. I'd like to get some grot substitues for the deff koptas too, but the only model I really like for it is priced out of my range. Have some more FW grot things I'll be doing eventually, but not all of them have a good proxy (the grot megatank for example), so my ability to field them will be at the whim of my opponents.

Buzzgob is OK as a commander. No where near as effective as a big Mek with a KFF as all of his special abilities really don't come into play unless your playing apoc. However... his LD 9 is nice if he's attached to a nob squad and on the charge he gets a ton of big choppa attacks... which is nice as well. And he's a very fluffy choice to lead my grots into combat even if not that effective.

This is actually a pretty shooty list when it comes down to it and nearly everything contributed significantly in the battle. Bikes, buggies, kans, koptas... trukk w/ nobs... even the grots did their part. Hard to complain when darn near every unit grades out at a B or better. It's just very ephemeral... so it won't take much of a pounding. It can dish it out though...

Have to look through my pics... but if I recall correctly they took out the avatar, as well as adding supporting fire in general. Think I maxxed out the unit's firing strength roll (killed a grot as a result), then burned an ammo grot to get 2 or 3 hits. Failed a couple of saves & no more Avatar (he was already wounded from earlier Zap gun & rokkit shooting).

Most people prefer the regular cannons, but the only artillery pieces I have painted don't look like standard cannon so I use them as Zap Guns.

Built the Rokkit Launcher for the thrid grot tank. Here are some pics. Takes a bit of time but it's magnetized so I can switch it out in case I ever get the chance to run them as actual grot tanks rather than just rokkit buggies. Kind of fun to do though. Note that the rather wonky alignment is allowed to happen on purpose as I don't think grots would worry too much about levels and plumb-bobs. Also got a bit more painting done (but am not featuring it in these pics)... expect a painting update soon.

First, the bits.... launcher made out of a tube & a hand-held ork rokkit launcher, magnetized at the back. Two kustum rokkits made out of smaller tube, GS & plasticard.

Side view of completed gun. Looks like I was a little over zealous with the super glue.

Front view. Really like the crookedness of it all... gives it that grotty feel. (sorry, depth-of-field stinks on this shot)

More quite soon.

I just had the most amazing game as part of the 40k league I'm in. Fantastic opponent with a really tough, Abbadon chaos space marine list. Demon w/ lash whip, another demon, terminators, oblits, berserkers, squads of plague marines in rhinos... man... what a nightmare. I ran a gigged up version of my battlewagon rush list. Got off a first turn charge and by turn two, though I'd lost 2 of my 3 scoring units I'd eliminated the targeted units (berserkers and oblits). It was a truly EPIC struggle that waxed and waned for 5 turns... and it looked like in the end I"d be victorious. Unfortunately I discovered after the fact that I'd made a pretty important (and stupid) rule error in my favor that actually did make a difference in the game. Now, it's not the fact that I then yielded the game to my worthy opponent that bothers me... my opponent was great & very generous throughout and I'm glad I caught and corrected the error before it was officially recorded. It's the fact that it was such an amazing and fun battle that now is consigned to the toilet because I screwed up (i.e. no battle report, no fun stories of daring do, etc.)

So it was a wash, except for one... SHINING... moment... that remains totally untainted my by error.

You see, my battlewagon list includes Zogwort... for one specific reason: Abbadon the Despoiler.... squig!

You go Zoggy.... good on 'ya!

Automatically Appended Next Post:

A bit more progress on the grot tank. Just about done with the base colors. Detailing, then weathering left to do (and a bit of a surprise at the end).

OK, next WIP. All the base colors are done but there's still a ton of detailing to do.... then all the chipping & scratching... finally the weathering and rust. So much work for such a tiny figure! It is finally starting to look like something though...

Thanks GG! Little update for ya... last for the evening as it's beddie-bye time for daddy. The blue and gold rockets are traditional colors for my particular branch of the clan. Not by design actually, but I picked up some nicely painted tankbustas in that theme off ebay and I've kind of stuck to the theme. Anyway, I always try to work them in.

Details are coming out nicely and have begun the chipping process. More to come!

I calls 'em as I seez 'em.

One little update for any Dr. Who fans out there... "why fight it?" I say!

Chipping is going well, it's just slow going. That big yellow section on the turret will get further detailing of some sort, just haven't decided what yet. The grots are supposed to be Bad Moons so I always try to work in at least a little yellow or Bad Moon iconography here and there. One of the advantages of these things being so small is that you can really dwell on the details. I guess that's why I don't really like doing bigger vehicles so much or take the easy route and just airbrush them "factory new"... there's just a never ending spiral of detail you can add if you want & at my speed it could take months to do just one vehicle. At least with these little guys, you run out of model pretty quickly!

Not sure I get the reference graven... (OK, I'm sure I don't get the reference...) but thank you!

Here's the semi-final shot. Nothing left save for rust speckling (el-spongo) and mud. I got tired of listening to you guys winge on about my not hand-painting the checkers so I experimented a bit. Also felt it was a little smallish (which it is) when compared to the rest of the squadron, so I beefed it up a bit by adding a home-made dozer blade and a spotter (from the FW grot artillery crew set). I really like this little tank. All I need do is muck it up a bit which will do a nice job of blending everything together and it should be all set!

God I love these little tanks... and I have 3 more to do! Best of all I just scored 3 Forge World grot bombs off e-bay (not a huge discount but it saved me shipping) that I'm going to use to make grot deffkoptas... which is a project I've had in mind for a long time now.

Depending on my schedule... the tank should be done in a day or two. Keep your eyes peeled!

Couple of things that I notice that I'll put down here lest I forget... the grot has a "wrap" around a wrist and an ankle... have to paint that. Also I'll add some supporting struts to the dozer blade from the bottom of the tank. You don't see it of course IRL, but in the side shots it's pretty obvious that it needs something down there. Guess I can tackle those jobs on the 'morrow. Night all!

Actually that someone is ME.

I've always thought the idea of highlighting checkers was ridiculous as the only way they'd actually have highlights is if they were embossed... which they clearly aren't. HOWEVER... I can see some grot "artist" deciding that he was going to make his tank fancier than the next guys by trying to paint hoity-toity checkers on it... so there we go. It was an interesting painting experiment at any rate.

Got the dozer blade brace made, painted and in place during the wee hours of last night... so that little job's done. More progress tonight hopefully.

Finally complete! The weathering may seem a bit extreme... but for little grot tanks screaming around at high speeds *really close* to the mud (much closer than a full sized ork vehicle)... I think it's just right! The image is quite large and very zoomable.

whalemusic360 wrote:Only 1 more, any big plans?

Actually... this has got me thinking that I may plink away at the last two killa kans that I have left to paint/build. At least that way I'd have two full squads. The closest thing to "big plans" that I have in mind for the grots is to convert the 3 FW grot bombs I just picked up in grot versions of deff koptas. Need to hunt down some bits first though. There will eventually be 3 more tanks... but not just yet.

You make a good point about the grubbiness of the good spotter there Reiko. Guess I just didn't want to lose him completely in the model. I'll put some thought into it. (and thank you!)

tipios wrote:Excellent finishing touches, I like the fact that the mud has got everywhere, because there's no mud guards

Well, to my knowledge... mud doesn't really burn... it just dries (so I'd use a light brown color & not "wet" it with gloss coat (which is how I get the wet mud look on the tracks and the closest mud spatters).

There were no kans back then. Just the dread... the orks were tiny though. Nearly grot sized (not quite) when compared to modern orks. I think it makes a great kan... I plan on using the other dread arm on the last kan I have to build (which is a metal one... but relatively "modern".

It's just amazing to me how long my poor orks have been neglected. I have just a ton of things I'd love to paint that I've had plans to do for a while. Ah well, one thing at a time, right? I should get the last two kans done just in time for my grot bombs & kopta conversion supplies to arrive from the UK. Have a small packet of orks to send off to Ifalna for painting. Once those are clear I can start thinking about some bigger ork projects (for both of us). OH, and I need to fix/rebuild and repaint two battlewagons. So much to do.... *sigh*

I'm only a couple votes short on that grot tank if anyone would like to help out!

Post by: Gitsplitta

Thanks SL!

Well... 70-90% of the world's people are right handed... there's no reason that grots wouldn't have a similar smattering. Since I'll only have 6 cans total... the odds are still in my favor that they'd all still have the same dominance as far as handedness. That... and there's probably a single dominant grot-mek that's determining the building of the kans... if not directly, then at least indirectly. If he thinks all kans could be right (or left) handed... that's probably how most all would be built, at least within the clan. However... I can easily make kan #6 reversed when it comes to the arms. If I remember.

Since this kan's a little bigger and I've based him on a fancy, slightly elevated base... I think I'll make this the "boss" kan. Will have to work out some kind of appropriate boss pole for him. Should be fun!

Post by: Gitsplitta

Hi Awesomesauce! Thank you!

Well, at the moment I'm using them as rokkit buggies (i.e. normal 40k rules). Which is why all the guns on the tanks are converted rokkit launchers as opposed to the normal mix of big shootas, grotzookas and flamers. The guns are all magnetized though so I can change them out if I ever get to actually use them as real grot tanks.

As rokkit buggies... in the current rule set at least... and with the most recent builds I've been experimenting with... I love them! Small, fast, re-rollable rokkit launchers. I combine them with a squad of bikes and maybe some deff koptas in addition to some battlewagons full of boys and I have a fast, flexible force that can really deliver a whallop! Best of all, all of those units will (soon) be fully proxied by grots or models that look like grots in comparison (i.e. RT era war bikes, grot bombs modified to represent deff koptas & the grot tanks of course).

It's also the second "full weathering" job I've ever done, which is a bit nerve-wracking and very tedious... but in the end very satisfying.

Tell you what Selv... I was going to do a full weathering job on the Killa Kan I'm about to start. I'll do a step-by-step with the weathering on that. It'll be much more straight forward that trying to explain the weathering on the tanks as the kan is more-or-less made of a single material with a consistent theme rather than being piles of scrap like the grot tank (which complicates things immensely).

Will that work for ya?

Decided that since this was made from an old dreadnought... that it would be a "boss" kan, so I've decorated it accordingly and dressed up the base. Also paid a little homage to the squats who were "disappeared" so many years ago...

Irondog Studios The link will take you directly to the "scap cannon".
I actually prefer the double-barreled scrap cannon I found earlier (same guy who made the scrap missile launcher), however I can't find him any more... must be long gone. I'm still kicking around ideas as to how I'm going to paint this one... I think I have a plan now. Might get started tonight, kind of depends on whether my studio is inhabitable or not (even with AC the studio accumulates heat... so we'll see.

Just an extra PK which I may use on the last kan (still debating). You know folks are always tossing old stuff at me because they know I'm interested. I think this one actually came from SL though. Believe it or not, this isn't the earliest ork dread... the first ones had PK's that looked like crab claws (very chaotic) and and a removable middle section that you could add or take out in order to alter the height of the dread and the number of weapon mounts.

Wait... come to think of it I have several of the guns that came with it as well!

Grots ROCK !!

Had a 1500 point league game tonight vs. a Guard player with a really tough, fully mechanized, anti-ork army. He had 2 Vendettas, 2 main battle tanks including some gun that got 20 shots each time it fired, and several Chimeras with infantry including meltas and a special command squad with Straken inside. (fearless, FNP, awesome in assault, etc). I had my grots... which I brought because I didn't want to be burdened with the chore of trying to win... I just wanted to have a good time.

The grots however... had other ideas. If the game had ended on T5... I would have won! Had chance to still win on T6 and in T7 I still had a very good chance for a tie... unfortunately my dice totally abandoned me beginning T5, both in shooting and assault. With one exception..... I had a small (10-man) grot squad KILL Straken in assault after being charged by him. GO Gretchin!!

So I lost the game 2 objectives to 1 with 1 other being contested (just could not kill that damn Chimera), but it was close going the whole way, for seven long turns. Really surprising... I thought I'd be tabled by turn 3. My Big Mek was out of his mind with the repair rolls. The truck got immobilized... he fixed it, the truck got immobilized again... he fixed it again... a grot tank lost it's weapon... he fixed that too!

Fun game.... just really surprised at how versatile and resilient my grot army is. If I paint just a couple more figs I can take it up to 1750... which is about as high as I think I want to go with it.

OH, and got some painting done on the Boss Kan... the whitish areas will eventually be all checkerboards.

Thanks for that Brian... Straken... that was his name. Fixed the post. Actually there was only 1 Punisher... still... plenty for a rag-tag group of gretchin to worry about.

As far as 6th goes for orks it's a pretty mixed bag. Problem is that the things that negatively affect the orks are amy-wide for the most part... changes in Waaagh, shortening of the distance vehicles can travel & disembark, casualty removing from shooting, etc. I also think orks will be less effective in assault in general. Deffkoptas & Kommandos have been significantly harmed by the inability to assault when arriving from the flank. KFF got worse. New sniper rules make it far easier to snipe nobs out of mobs, or have a PK Nob called out in combat by an opposing character with a higher initiative weapon.

Tankbusta's, storm boys, lootas & bikes got better. Squadron rules improved which helps kans and warbuggies.

So, I'd say at first glance... a net negative for the orks... but not a complete disaster. Definitely second-tier lists at best now though. But on the bright side... at least I'm not Tyranids! They seem (at first glance) to have gotten screwed-over big time. I guess time will tell... and I'm not the best assessor of Tyranid tactics to begin with. We'll have to see what wyomingfox says when he gets back from his holiday.

I'm starting the process of laying down the grid for the checker-board pattern. Easily accomplished with a micron pen. I've eyeballed most of this though with the longer lines I measure guide points (as I will with the main plate).

Looks nice, Gits. From there, you just paint in alternating black squares? Are you going to highlight the black again?

Heh.

Gits, I think that Orks are going to GAIN some viability, I'm not sure it is a net loss. The 'Look out, Sir!' rules nerf Snipers killing characters, and the Nobs are covered. It just changes how to move your boyz around. Your BLAST weapon problem has been fairly taken care of. Now, the loss of the +1 Init on Furious charge sucks, but we'll see what happens.

I agree, however, that Buggies and Bikes are back in the game, baby! YEAH!

Well, I never suggested that there weren't buffs to specific units... just that the negatives seemed to hit the entire army rather than just a unit here and a unit there. Thus the balance seemed to be on the negative side. Time and play testing will tell of course.

I think the biggest across-army issue is the Furious Charge nerf. The loss of +1 Init hurts Orks more than anyone else.
