Update: Painting has begun. Mainly skin and the black undercoat for the metallic areas. I need to make some serious progress tonight. We shall see. Luckily it's a pretty simple figure painting-wise.

Morning Update: I did get more work done last night... not as much as I'd hoped, but I think I'm in good shape schedule-wise. I got the metal bits done save for the edge highlighting and any rust or schmuck I decided to put on. Pants and boots are (mostly) done. Started the optivisor and spotlight. Also put my first coat of yellow down on his armor bits (he is a Bad Moon after all). No pic yet. Perhaps I'll do one tonight. Thing about the way I paint orks is that they pretty much look terrible until just before they're done, so I've never felt like WIP shots help all that much. With the game tonight I'll probably have no more than an hour to paint this evening, but that'll be enough to allow me to tidy a few things up & move certain elements forward. Got some new stuff for my grot army yesterday but it's going to be a surprise. Going to be a lot of fun to make and paint though. @Yggs: Thanks & no problem. I steer people to your tut all the time. simian = Gits Actually my all-time favorite tankbusta that I cobbled together from normal boy bitz has an even more ape-like look to him. Just looks bad-a**. My Gits figure isn't so much that as a bit goofy... too many augmentations I guess... brain gets a little squidgy with all those conduits running through it.

Sick looking stuff, Gitsplitta! I love the beacon on his head - the light effect is astounding.
I'm a little confused about his hand though - surely an Ork would make the fingers sharper, in imitation of their own fingernails? A small item, but just something that bothered me. Other than that, fantastic! Tons on character in this model.

Thanks Iffy. OSL always makes me nervous... just not one of those things I'm comfortable with.

That could happen epy. With the influx of grots (thanks Iffy) and picking up some new things myself to work on, there should be more work on my orks forthcoming both myself and Iffy. I'm nearly done with the basic space marine army I was shooting for though, so I need to push on there so I can complete that task.

I think you're right Nightwatch, but the had was actually intended for a human model, I just nicked it for this project and didn't think it quite through to the logical conclusion (I was pressed for time throughout). I'd modify it as you suggest but since the hand is flush against the ground I'm not sure it would accomplish anything.
The Good Green wrote:That is fantastic Gits! I love the paint pot. What Ifalna wrote.
Eloquent as always GG! Thanks!
So, remind everyone about the keys to the self-portrait... it's basically an ork cybered up into a painting machine, which is what I feel like quite frequently. Air brush (slugga) in one hand attached to the compressor on his back, optivisor bolted to his head, lamp bolted to his chest with a grot prod / paintbrush in his right hand (as I often seem to be encouraging young painters to keep at it). It was... a lot of fun to make... and I'm quite happy with it. A nice compliment to all my excellently painted grots.

Glad you guys like him. I could't help but model the idea that every time he had a decent though an actual light bulb would go off above his head... I'd model an accompanying klaxon if I could.
Yeah, schank... it is a bit odd to see another picure, especially another or, up there on the boards. But I'll get used to it as with all things. And you're right, it is very fitting.

Just for the record... this is the view my avatar is based on... and it's by far my favorite (even though you can't see most of the extra work). It's like somewhere in there... he's studying you. @Bigfish: Thanks! There's a lot of older grots in there too, so some of what you might be seeing aren't really modified grots, just OOP or FW versions of them.. though when I built them I did gleefully mix and match heads on the newer plastic ones.

Are they grots? Or orks? Problem is the mob can only have 3 runt herds, so were full up. There are other ork units that aren't covered in the waaagh dakka yet though.

Post by: The Good Green
The tinboyz were robots made by the meks to make fun of the other armies. There's a pointy one (eldar) one with huge shoulders ( SM) and a stunty one (squats... remember them )
I would say the squat one would be perfect for a grot bot... one of the rogue trader unit upgrades for grots. It's a force shield of some sort, that follows the grots around.

yeah. I have a scattering of the squats.

What happens when you get your full Mob?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
@fatty: Would be delighted to have you fatty, no worries mate! It's more fun in the grot pool anyway. @Solar_lion: When the mob is full, the mob is full. Any DCM can start a mob as long as it doesn't duplicate an existing mob that ISNT full (in other words if our mob fills up, a DCM could start another cyber-grot mob if they want). I think there's a regular grot mob out there with only 1 DCM runt herd... I think that one would have to fill before you could start another regular grot mob. Maybe not though... if that one got 10 grots, I think you could legally start another mob. There are a bunch of ork units that aren't in the Waaaagh Dakka yet, so you (as a DCM) could let Yakface know you wanted to start one and then build your model accordingly. I think the odds of us getting 30 grots are about a million to one. Even cyber grots (which are cool). I'm guessing most folks would want to be a full-fledged ork if they could. Yakface started a thread (see the Waaaagh Dakka post) where you can show your in-progress work. The WD page (where you can read about the mobs and see pics of the bosses and nobs) is wikki style... so when you finish, you can just post your finished model up there in the right area.

OH and one more thing to everyone.... the way Yakface set things up... you don't actually have to get approval to join our mob. It's nice that you let us know you're interested... but as a dakkanought in good standing, (i.e. you're still breathing and haven't been banned for some reason) you have the right to make a figure for, and enter any mob you want to.

Just thought I'd give you guys a bit of a text update. Not as good as pics, I know... but it's the best I can do at the moment. My problem is that I've got about 5 different irons in the fire at the moment which means I don't make much progress on any of them. One terrain, one Nid, 3 marines and one ork (and the ork is a multi-part). Top it off with a serious couple of work deadlines and progress is slow. I don't want to completely spill the beans on the ork project, but I'll give you some hints to get you thinking. - it involves using some Forge World figures - the figs can be proxies for regular 40k figures for which a "modern" figure does not really exist - the "work" involves making the figures WYSIWYG for 40k, which they all aren't when you get them... and making the primary weapon interchangeable - I'm actually having to do some scratch building rather than just kit-bashing & it's working out really well. Now, those of you who scratch-build all the time will laugh your butts off at my pathetic little project... but I'm all excited because so far it's working exactly as I'd hoped. Hope to get the project moved along enough in the next couple of nights to show pics. Gits OH, and any of you who haven't joined Waaaaagh Dakka yet, and especially our little unit of cyber grots... you're REALLY missing out. We've got folks doing the craziest, coolest things... Post by: Gitsplitta
Now, I told you this was a lot of hull-a-baloo for nothing right?
Well, here's the "big secret". I'm working on grot tanks to be used as warbuggies. I wanted to field them all with rockets but was just going to use the weapons provided when I had an epiphany of sorts, and decided I could build my own rockets. I made a full tutorial's worth of photos, but these two cut to the chase... I can post the whole thing if somebody really wants. While these look tiny, mine are actually much beefier than the originals.
The gun:
And the turrets:

Nice idea for buggies, but baren't those horribly expensive? Still, it'll be very cool to see the end resultls!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
They do look a bit weedy - aren't they twin-linked on buggies? You should try mounting the Deffkopta Rokkits on the front - if I'm not jumping ahead...
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Funny thing is that the original that came with the buggies is basically just this... a single rocket on a stick. Granted it's made for the regular grot tank rules, not the proxy... but still. I toyed with several ideas, including using the rocket racks that you can get from forge world for the guns to get the twin linked effect, but they're too big & over power these tiny tanks. (man they're small... expensive as heck for what you get) What I might do is scratch build a couple of thinner rockets and mount them below and aside the main rocket. That would get your multiple rockets for the twin-linking and give it a bit more visual oomph. However, if I do a decent job painting them up I don't think anyone is going to complain that I only have one rocket each. The good part is of course that these are fully removable being magnetized... so if they end up looking too weedy I can just pull them off and try a new build. I was just excited about figuring out how to build this little, movable and interchangeable bit on my own! It's not my thing normally...

I pretty much go gagga over anything magnetic. The magnitizing looks very seamless. Do you suffer from any droopage (or a tendancy for the barrels to point downwards)?

Post by: Heffling
Gits,
You should be able to pick up some rocket pods from Valks that have been converted to Vendettas. Those would make for pretty good twin-linked rokkits, and are small.
A little creativity and you could make it look like a tank gun barrel that's been stuffed with rokkits instead of firing a shell.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Not my fist attempt at OSL but probably my best effort so far. I've been looking at how light reflects off of real surfaces and tried to use that to improve my technique. (like the bright line of OSL along a facing edge) It's a self-portrait you know... so of course the light is on all the time! Back to the magnet question now that I'm not typing on my phone. The two magnets on the outside of the hollow are low-profile 1/4" diameter RE magnets. all that surface area means they've got a lot of holding power but don't take up much of the cavity. I was originally going to go with matching magnets on the ends of the barrel tongue (or whatever you call it) but that little tube is short enough already, making it short enough for even the low-profile magnets might compromise the integrity of the thing, plus I bet the magnets would have a tendency to break their glue bonds with the gun. So I went with 1/8" RE magnets embedded in green stuff. The trick when adding the extra rockets to the gun is not to add too much weight or I will have rotational issues. I have 3 possibilities; brass rod (too heavy I think), styrene tube with a GS cone & styrene rod. Going to try the styrene rod first & see if i can use an old jeweler's trick to shape the cone properly as it'll be the lightest. @Heff: good suggestion... I'll think on it.
8723
Post by: wyomingfox
Gitz, you list the diameter of magnets, but what is the thickness? 1/32", 1/16", 1/8", or 3/16"?
The trick when adding the extra rockets to the gun is not to add too much weight or I will have rotational issues
Do you mean droopage? or Horizontal issues?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I think the standard magnets are 1/16" thick. The low profile 1/4" magnets are half that.
Well, the only way they can rotate is up and down once they're in place (just like the main guns on any turret)... and it's the rotational "bond" that's the weakest. Nearly impossible to pull these magnets straight off each other, but sliding them or rotating them is much easier.
47737
Post by: marmaduke
awesome cant wait to see the completed project
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Here's a couple of pics for you nay-sayers who thought my little rockets were "weedy"...
I didn't actually get to the store to get supplies so I had to work with what I had on hand. Plastic tube, GS and toothpicks. The magnet connection is very strong and these will stay exactly where I put them. I can even hold one and shake my hand up and down pretty vigorously and they won't budge. If I tap the turret on the table, they'll move, but I can't see any way these will move from whatever pose I put them in, in the course of normal gaming.

Well, perhaps after it's painted.
Someone asked earlier if I'd gotten the grot mega-tank... no, not yet. I only buy things that I think I can proxy or modify to field legally in a 40k army & the IA's aren't accepted around here as valid rules sets for tournaments and such as they are viewed as unbalancing.
Hope to have those comparison shots in a bit. Have a bit of painting I want to do first.

OK, here are a couple of size comparison shots. Disregard the painting... this is just the first step. These will get two washes before I consider the "base" done, then I'll come in and start adding detail. I'm going to handle the tanks in the same way that I do my kans... that being each painted individually and with no real regard to the others. I see these as coming from the same mentality as the kans, so each bitsie grot mek puts his own personality into construction and painting. I'm particularly happy that the gun easily depresses it's S8, AP 3, re-rollable armament at the marine threatening it. Beakie git! I see these as perfect proxies for warbuggies with extra armor and a grot rigger. Note that this is the largest of the tanks by far. The rest are shorter and much less bulky.

You do realize, from a gaming point of view, that grot riggers and extra armour don't mix with the squadron rules?

Post by: Gitsplitta
Yes, unforunately... been through this with my kans. Riggers fix immobilized which doesn't work due to instant kill of squadron'd vehicles. I still don't understand the logic of why armor plates don't work though as there's no "instant kill" thing associated there. But, I know they don't work. Stupid GW. So my "explanation" for the tanks is that they're buggies with extra armor and grot riggers, but I obviously won't pay of upgrades that won't do me any good... I'm just hoping that 6th Edition is a bit less brain dead when it comes to the squadron rules.

Ok, it's all good then - look at it the bright way: it frees up almost enough points for an additional buggy squadron

This morning's progress. Base coats are down on both now. Last tank will get a metallic coat but much lighter and browner than the tank on the left. You'll note the extra rocket launcher in the command tank on the right. That's the one that came with the set. It's now magnetized to fit into the second gun mount but doesn't rotate (there's just a magnet in the back and one in the gun. Funny thing is I put the magnets in wrong first, so I had to cut the gun off of it's original resin mounting and build a new one out of styrene tubing. Whoops!
I'm all out of rocket launchers so I'll have to wait on that conversion on the third tank until I get more (arranged to buy some from someone at my FLGS, but getting there might take a few days). However, I can still work on the third tank body and there's a ton of detailing to do on these guys.
Should be fun!

A good way to look at these is an an equivalent to the killa kans. They're actually near the same size (slightly shorter on average but more massive). In that context... the size is right, it's just as an ork proxy they're small.
Just had a GREAT idea for the paint job on the third tank... which I will do tomorrow.

WIP 5 and pretty much done for tonight... I don't like it when scrap vehicles become too "scrappy" as you tend to completely lose the shape and continuity of the figure in a bunch of randomly panted bits. So I've laid out some ground rules and will be sticking to them. The only odd colored panels will be corrugated metal and diamond plate which will be depicted in their natural colors.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Looking good. I agree on the continuity of the colours, it's important with orks to keep the bigger picture in mind.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Now see.... pay attention folks.
THIS (pointing to the above post) is EXACTLY why you have a P&M blog. Because sometimes someone looks at your work with fresh eyes and has a brilliant idea that youd've never thought of yourself.
Consider it done marmaduke... and thank you!
@CK: Thanks... I do plan on adding some color to the plates, but I also plan on keeping the same feel (i.e. the existing color) throughout... ah heck, too hard to explain. You'll see.
-----------------------------------------------------
Today's work... If the paint looks sloppy on the front and bones of the gun, that's because I want it to look like an A.D.D grot slapped paint with a brush on the metal without much concern for coverage. Finished the grot and the exhaust too. Going to do a bit of building for my marines tonight, but I might dabble a bit more with this tank. Have to make a big decision in a bit here so I'm stalling some while I think it over.
9910
Post by: CommissarKhaine
Looking great, and I get your drift with the colour thingy, no worries! I'd consider adding a tad more colour to the rokkits to make them more prominent on the model - and maybe some eyes above the front teef? I'm always a fan of an atavistic look with the greenskins
33159
Post by: tipios
I really like the way you've done the front panel, the whole model is coming on nicely. I've got an itch now about doing all things grot!!
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
That's still WIP remember, no where near done. The rockets still need to be painted, as well as that little antenna thingie on top with it's accompanying OSL. As this is part of my Bad Moon army, I want to get some yellow on the big side panels... probably similar in effect to the green, but I'm not sure about that as I really like the look of the metal. I'll paint the rest of the tank first and save that decision for last. Looking at the design of the front, I think the view port is supposed to represent the eyes, but I decided that I preferred it more abstract portrayal rather than specifically coloring in the whole head or doing something like eyes. It looks like their used to be more to the colored plate and it was blown / torn off at some point in the past... I like it that way.

Thought it might be a fun thing to do with things 1 & 2. Or open it up to a group of gamers for a bit of a laugh.
Enjoying watching the Waagh Dakka grow, and your models are looking great.
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Hey dantay, good to hear from you! Thanks, it's been a lot of fun doing the Waaaaagh Dakka... from making my guy to seeing the amazing work the grotz and squig hounds have been doing. We still have lots of room in the mob if you're interested in making a cyber grot.
Wish I could show you the finished tank... I really like the way it came out & it gets my wife's seal-of-approval, which isn't given often or easily. I'm going to try and find a camera shop over lunch and see if I can get a new charger.
Those grot tank rules are interesting, but since I don't know the context of all the various options most of it is lost on me. Liked the little story though. The grot tanks are one of those things that FW does that I wish GW would make "official" by placing it in a dex. But at least I can convert them easily enough into rokkit buggies, so I'll be able to use them regularly enough. Can't figure out how to proxy the grot megatank as anything... perhaps when 6th edition comes out.
34329
Post by: dantay_xv
I wasnt too sure either, I guessed the rules would be in the ork codex, which I do not have.
I think Gladiator meets Gorkamorka, or even the movie deathrace.
Build a tank an fight to the death, build experience/loot/ gubbins along the way to bein' da best.
I have been lurking, but little more than that, work becoming ever morfe stressful and a little man who thinks throwing and biting is fun.
What about a small magnet on the back and put a trailer or something, you magnetised the missiles, you could swap out for flamers, then you got some nice skorchaz
Or a trailer on the back full o boyz and you got a stonkin' buggy or war waggin thingy.
Good luck with getting a new charger, cant wait to see the pics... will see about acquiring a grot tonight and let you know
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
I imagine building a little trailer out of one of the old (early edition/gorkamorka) style trucks would make for a serviceable grot truck (the weapon on the truck is the tank and the carrying capacity is in the trailer. However, the grots would have to be proxied up as "orks" for it to be playable in 40k. Perhaps I should take a que from the Waaaaagh Dakka and make them all cyber grots that count as orks (i.e. the cyber bits make them better at fighting hand-to-hand & tougher but worse at shooting. Hmmm... that's an idea with some merit. A cyber-grot trukk mob being pulled by a grot tank.

Grot tank #1: (at a closer mag than just about any ork I've ever painted... Lord help me) The designs on the sides are decals because well... I own them, I like them and I could never paint them this small. The fact that you can see that the checkerboards *are* decals is care of the harsh lighting in the light box. In hand... you can barely see the checks at all much less the edges of the decal. That subtle effect was exactly what I was going for. I wanted the extra rockets to look like looted AP shells from the IG or something similar that had crude fins hastily applied. There's probably a couple of snotlings hiding behind the bones with a couple of hammers that "fire" them by hitting the percussion caps when poked with a sharp stick! Remember to vote if the spirit moves you! Gits

Post by: Gitsplitta
Thanks WM... hope this helps. They are very expensive for what you get... however, the more I painted them, the more I fell in love with them... little buggers! Now I'm searching for some excuse for getting the grot mega-tank.... OH wait... I still have 3 more grot tanks to paint. Yippie!
OH, and a couple of more shots...
First, for you OSL junkies... a bit better shot from above.
And a final size comparison to something generally close in theme as well as physical size.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
Well he got them a bit cheaper, but they were recasts from the notorious Tony Heath (see the transaction report for more details), but after much work, I got them exchanged for the genuine goods with GW/FW (along with my Drop Pods), so in the end they likely cost me more in time and effort than just getting the real ones to begin with!

There's just NO PLEASING YOU is there?! *sigh* Actually a miniature grabbin klaw would make this a great Kan proxy... tipios wrote:That tank is real nice Gits!! The glow effect is great. In some pics it looks like the light is brighter than the glow, is that just the pics?
Yep, there's a couple of different shades of "glow", some definitely darker... but MT is right, the brightest glow and the bulb are the same shade. Bulbs are tough to do... as they're 3-dimensional you can't paint them like a normal lense or glowing power weapon which are in essence... two dimensional. I came up with a decent version on my Big Mek... but I'm not sure that will be convincing here. dantay_xv wrote:Go with some GW blazing orange or an equivalent, its what i use for extreme/ edge highlights mixes well into the reds too and with a baal red wash looks nice
That's usually where I go to blend up my reds... just not sure here where it's such an obvious light source... something keeps tugging at my mind to go to white rather than yellow. marmaduke wrote:looks awesome as usual
Glad you approve marmaduke. Assuming I fix the tone of the bulb, does the OSL work for you? It was your idea after all.
8723
Post by: wyomingfox
Looking at the bulb, there almost looks like there is a starburst done with a blended blazing orange....guessing it is the lightsource though.
Personally, I would stay away from pink...err...white.

Post by: Gitsplitta
That's why I give all my lenses and bulbs a couple of coats of "Aard Coat"... it allows natural highlights to occur that I could never duplicate artificially.

I was looking through pictures of red LED's to get an idea for when I try red OLS on my IW dread, and found these pics!! They show the brightest parts as white. So I'd go with adding white for the brighter bits.
I can see the dilemma of trying to highlight a sphere, but maybe the top can be the brightest part then blend down to red at the base. Same as the top pic! Good luck!! when I get back from holiday I want to see the resault
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
That helps a lot tipios... thank you! I'll fix it ASAP. Here's another couple of examples I found... So it seems from these and tipios' examples... I have 3 options. 1. light on top, dark on bottom, possible other bright spots top and bottom 2. white line & very light section in middle to approximate nichrome wire, then darkening both up and down (this is closest to how I did the bulb on my Big Mek, but not exactly the same) 3. the bulb actually appears solidly off-white with just the slightest pinkish/red tinge I think most of the variation depends on the kind of bulb... 1 = LED, cylindrical/pointed 2 = clear incandescent bulb, globe 3 = frosted incandescent, globe (Sorry for the size of the photos, not sure how to adjust that when they're not in my gallery.)

That pics shows a progression of red to orange to yellow to white . Suprisingly, the glow looks pink in spots...how strange.
P.S. I am suprised that I can't seem to google up a tutorial on painting light bulbs

@fatty: Thanks fatty! Hope to get the final tweaks done in the wee hours over the next couple of days... As is so often the case, "finished" is a relative term. (i.e. I post it and people point out all the problems, then I go back to work!)
@Yggs: In comparison the the Kan they do size up just fine. Keep in mind this is the largest tank, the rest are shorter and less massive by a good bit. I'll keep working away on them as they're so much fun to paint. I think I'ill be buying some servo arms made by one of the third party companies so I can proxy them as Kans if I want... just because it's a fun idea.
@sum1: Me too. I thought for single barrel weapons they were pretty uninspiring. The scrap gun barrel is OK, but still odd with the little bits of confetti sticking out. The big shoota barrel is OK too, but all are a bit uninspired. Granted they are just grot tanks. I did like the kustum blasta though... it's cool.

Well, I tried some different photography techniques this morning for the grot tank in hopes of giving you a look at it in more natural light, unfortunately I'd have to completely re-set my camera for that and it's just not worth it (the menus are a PITA). No enough time this AM to work up another camera session, but I have a teaser for you. Put the tank down on the table in the midst of an on-going game between myself and Thing 1. You can see a representative sample of most of the modifications in the pic. Better spread later.

Ive taken some terrible photos with a flash at night etc, and the program corrects them to a very reasonable representation of the mini irl. Worth looking into maybe?

Gits has some sort of PS like program. Still not as good as real light though.

I have photoshop & normally use it. But my folk's are visiting so I just don't have the time at the moment to take and manipulate a full set of photos. Was hoping the sunlight photos would work out nicely but I'd have to re-do all the setting in my camera for that. I may try again later with the camera off the macro setting, but then I don't think the depth-of-field will be very good. In any case there's always the light box and photoshop later if need be.

I'm lucky my camera defaults to basic settings (like auto focus, and auto adjust). So I can't get lazy and I have to set up my camera ( btw, the weathering on that tank looks awesome)

I figure I can proxy these as either rokkit buggies or killa kans (I'll pick up some mechanical servo arms for them... like grabba klaws on the normal battlewagons).
Make's them a pretty useful model as well as *really* fun to work with.

So, I got this cool new photo studio set-up from my sweetie for our 15th anniversary. It's big (36"x36"), but I hate the look of regular flash photogrophy whole-army shots and people kept asking for them, so I thought this might be a better solution. It's not perfect yet by any stretch... have to do a bunch more fiddling with m camera settings and the lighting... but it's not too bad even so. This is certainly the best looking (quality wise) army shot I've ever taken. I like it as within the limits of my camera... everything is in focus.
So, here's my first test shot. Nothing new here, just all the gretchin elements in one spot.

I was hoping to post some progress I'd made on my second grot tank over the last couple of weeks, but I can't find a memory card for my camera. Blast it. Looks like it's time to go to the electronics store. I did have the chance to try a couple of the grot tanks proxied as rokkit buggies and they worked just fine. Look great on the table when fielded with kans too. Hopefully pics soon. Gits Automatically Appended Next Post:
So, I signed up for a progressive campaign at a brand-new FLGS that is very close to my home (20 minutes). I don't think they'll replace my regular FLGS as I have a lot of history and friends at my normal store, but I feel a responsibly to help out the "local" shop. Problem is at this point I don't buy much anymore... at least not normal gaming things. I have picked up some paint and such from them but that's about all the financial support I can give.
So, when the opportunity to get involved in a progressive campaign (starting at 500 pts and going up to 2000) that is specifically designed to bring new players along in the hobby, I thought it would be a good opportunity to help build the gaming community by being able to participate with a nicely painted army. So, I wanted a fun & unusual army but something that could be beaten by a newbie with a beginning force (I'll state now I don't care about winning in this case, am more interested in being a good example for the new folks). So, I had to pick an army... Decided on my orks as they are largely painted and a nice break from the space marines which dominate my life. They are good a low point values, yet have several options for units that are quirky, fun and eminently beatable. A build that I've been working on (slowly) is essentially a grot army. Not one that proxies as a guard army, just making a grot army through the regular ork dex.
So I thought this would be a fun opportunity to trot it out. The list is as follows (best as I can remember):
HQ: Big Mek w/ PK & KFF (some other war gear, can't remember)
TP: 10 grots w/ herder
TP: 10 grots w/ herder
TP: 10 grots w/ herder
FA: Grot Tank (counts-as Rokkit Buggy)
FA: Grot Tank (counts-as Rokkit Buggy)
Hvy: 2x Killa Kans, Rokkits
Hvy: 2x Killa Kans, Grotzookas
Attach the Mek to a grot squad to prevent him from being sniped & march them & kans forward under cover of the KFF. Send the buggys out on the flanks. The "free" grot squads find objectives or what-not and take cover.
Not the least bit competitive, but fun. There is a lot of "armor" but it's the kind of armor that can be shredded by bolter fire so I don't think it's overpowering. Plus it gives me incentive to work on my grot tanks as there is a month between games, so if I keep slowly increasing the size of my rokkit buggy squads I should make steady progress on those models. I've already heard of guys buying vindicators and what-not so I'm sure I'll get my you-know-what handed to me... but I laid the army out on my gaming table last night and it looks *really good* on the tabletop. So I'll roll with the losses.
When I can take pictures again, I'll take a group shot & post it.

Post by: sum1thtdiesalot
That list is pretty awesome sounding Gits. You should give it the title of " DA GREEN PUDDLE!!!" and then take some more grots

Post by: Anvildude
If you're looking for fun, quirky, help others get into the game, and not worried at all about winning, I'd suggest going with a Shokk Attakk Gunn over the KFF, simply because the KFF, even with just a 5+ Cover, is still rather 'ard against some armies, especially with a big horde like that. Also, the SAG is more fluffy for a 'non-ork-ork Horde', since it uses Snotlings.

Automatically Appended Next Post: OK, finally have a couple of shots of the second grot tank AKA rokkit buggy. Thanks graven, I appreciate that. Makes me smile too. There's a lot 'o love in that little pile of grots. Looks like the campaign (well, at least my participation in it) is up the spout. Perhaps I get get one of my boys to beat up on me tonight with either nids or crons.
I'm really anxious to get all 6 of my grot tanks done... they just work so nicely with the kans, but I'm afraid other than finishing the yellow one the rest may have to wait a long time. I'm tied up painting for the boys until Christmas and then tied up again after that getting ready for Adepticon. *Might* be able to squeeze one in here or there.. we'll see. The next one should be a bit easier to paint than this one, so it might be able to be snuck in somewhere rather easily.

I have... and I've even commented on it to Przemas. I love it, but it has two major problems. Problem #1: The price on the tank is starting to approach FW prices, which is a big negative for me. I'm not saying that they're gouging... it's just gone beyond my price-point for an unofficial model. Problem #2: There is no reasonable proxy for this model in the ork army. So once I've spent my $60 plus extra for shipping from Poland... what do I get for it? Answer: A cool model that I can't use. At this price, there's no way I can use it for a grot tank, it's a little smaller than trukk sized, but clearly isn't appropriate for a trukk. Couldn't use it for a FW grot megatank... not enough weapon mounts & too small. Neither would it really work for a Battle Wagon (not in my opinion anyway). I guess you could conceivably use it as some kind of warbuggy... but the price is prohibitive and there are no weapon options for it. So... neat model. Expensive. Not useful. (ad I'm not a fan of the soft-serve ice cream cone hatch... that would have to be replaced.

Post by: Arakasi
If it's only a bit smaller than a Trukk, a looted wagon perhaps? I do like the look of it, but agree it probably isn't a great fit...
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
@Sage: Not a team tournament (well, not a tournament at all, it's a campaign). @Arakasi: I suppose you could make a case for an armored-up looted wagon... but it's certainly not a transport... no doors save for the top hatch, where would you deploy from? (if it's got an 'aard case, you can no longer deploy anywhere from the hull) And... well... it's not "looted" is it? Still, it IS a cool figure. So if you like it, by all means find a place for it!
18980
Post by: Arakasi
Count the turret as Boom gun and the transport issue becomes moot (and I'm sure raises additional issues for you - my feelings seem to be more aligned with yours than not). While I like it, I have no current need for it, and it isn't cool enough to buy on a whim and add to my pile of plastic, resin and projects, so I'll stop trying not to convince you
