The females look much betha then in Oblivion. I will take a viking/nord. Male, I guess. Maybe female, albeit that would be the 1st time in a game I choose to be a woman.
And is it just me, or do the male Altmer look like really old women?
Also, yes, Orks are Mer. Orsimer, to be exact. But that breaks up the whole '3 Men, 3 Elves, 3 Beasts' thing. though technically Bretons are kindov elvish too...
And I'm definitely going for an Argonian. Everyone will believe they're Dragonborn!
Hmmm Khajit look ugly as hell this time around (not that they were the best in previous compaired to mods) and Argonians look more Dragon then Reptilian.
How can you say that? Those gleaming ivory tusks on the Orc ladies, the silky fur of the Khajiiti females- the proud, wrinkled dewlaps on the Argonians? *pant*... Might have to make a Lifts-her-tail.

Damn those look fantastic. And my GOD the Orcs look great. I REALLY hope they did better voice acting this time though, in Oblivion all the voice acting was just terrible

Well yea they have, I read in a blog of somebody, posted via the Elder Scrolls Skyrim page on Facebook that there is at least 70 voice actors!
Todd played coy, “Well, in Oblivion we only had a dozen or so voice actors, in Skyrim we have over 70… and I’m sure we’ll send out a press release with the full voice cast soon enough”
Will the voice acting itself may not be better, at least you hopefully wont get people in opposite ends of the map sounding the same.
Dunmer literally mean "Dark Elf" though. It's Dun(dark)-Mer(elf) in the Elder Scrolls ancient languages. Like the Orks are the Orsimer, (I'm thinking it means Stone-elf or Mountain-elf), the High Elves are Altmer, the Wood Elves are Bosmer, the Dwarves are Dwemer (Deep Elves) and the Ayleids are, well, Ayleids. Hmm...

Lol the first time I read that it was such a wtf moment I laughed for like five minutes.

Awesome sauce. I just hope they dont sound like they are reading from a script. Seriously, the Breton women sounded so BAD

Where I Bethesda, I would keep two things the EXACT same from Oblivion: Mi'iq The Liar (who broke the fourth wall constantly and was a way the developers discussed things with the players) and the Guard.

Well granted M'aiq was also there for Morrowind fans. He was a necessary part I think for a quest back then

Here's just hoping the Beast Races have some unique animations. That was one of the best flavor bits of Morrowind, that Khajiit and Argonians clawed at enemies for H2H instead of punching, along with their unique walks. Maybe not quite so... lizardy? But more slinky, less upright would be cool. Also maybe a little restriction in what they can wear- like the inability to wear full-face helmets and boots in Morrowind. That was neat.
One thing I hope they change is how the guards can tell when you've been stealing if you talk to them, but not if you just stand next to them; it's as if you just break down and confess whenever you talk to them. Hell, i've got the Grey Fox's mask at my house, I could steal anything I like and constantly do, but here I am babbling like an idiot and showing him where I hid everything on my person.

And also maybe not let the guards have a magical key to every single door regardless of whether or not it needs a key...
I have to use up my vacation at work by the end of the year, so I'm off from the 11/11 until 11/21. I'm probably gonna make a blog following my travels and a general review of the game, more details to come as time gets closer if anyone is interested.
They look pretty good, Orc has certainly jumped into the 'possible' list of starting characters.
Regarding the omnipresent guards, I saw a interview where one of the folks at Betheseda said that it was not going to be like that in Skyrim. I can't remember if he said it was totally gone, I have a feeling he said they'd need to witness the crimes.
However there was something about, you would be harder to track in other cities. So if you went on a rampage in city A, city B might not know about your previous deeds, even if arrested for something in city B. However if arrested in City A, you'd be a known and wanted criminal.
It would allow you to be a blagart in one area, and a saint in another.
Need to try and dig that up, but it was something that made me very happy, as when I play my rogue characters, I do find it quite frustrating how the AI operates in Oblivion.
It probably has something to do with the new Radiant AI storytelling thing they've got going on. So though the Guard wouldn't automatically know you've, say, killed someone, if that person's brother sees it, they might go running to the Guards to report you.
Indeed, it'd take it a step further if we take Anvildude's scenario of another NPC witnessing a murder you commit and telling the guards; otherwise it'd just be annoying.
"This guy said he witnessed you killing someone, and we're going to 100% believe him and STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL!"
Though in this case, since the world doesn't freeze when you talk to people, a guard could literally walk up to you being all "We have a few questions- could you follow me, please?"

I would do the same, but I'll save it for ~Christmas; that's when my brother gets home for a week or two from the Great Sand Box.
Saw this as a spray on TF2, was thoroughly compelled to giggle. Yes I am a 21 year old man and I giggled at the sight of an Oblivion reference in a cartoonish FPS game. Although you could slaughter 50 or so guards while wearing the Gray Fox Mask and then take it off and yield to get out of trouble.
That masked guy killed 50 guards *take mask off in front of guard* Wait this is the wrong person.
I hope they finally made character movement realistic. Having the PC move the same exact speed when going forward, backward, and sideways and always instantly accelerating to full speed really ruined the gameplay for me.
Can't find the interview, it might be in one of my games mags littered around the house, but I found a note of it..
Each city in the world has an unique economy, which the player can sabotage, should they so desire. Cities are still patrolled by guards, but they're no longer the omniscient killing machines they were in Oblivion. Bounties the player can incur are also no longer valid throughout the land: for instance, if you kill someone in Hold A, the guards in Hold B will not arrest you for it.

Meh...since the perks only apply to a single area of expertise (and you only get to choose one per level), it shouldn't be that hard to pull off. It's not like you have to allocate skill points or anything (those raise naturally in traditional Elder Scrolls fashion), and the perks don't look quite as powerful as they were in Fallout (aside from the gakky skill point perks). Since there are so many skills, and each one will have it's own perk tree, you'll still have to choose wisely, even fifty or so levels in. Also, they look to be a bit more restricted (you have to get one perk before you have access to another in the tree, though this seems to branch a bit), which should help a bit with balancing the game.
Part of the fun of the Elder Scrolls, however, is the fact that it's not balanced, and you become incredibly powerful over a very long period of time.

The E3 demo has been uploaded in full HD as of yesterday. I realise theres alot of footage here that has already been seen, but it has virtually no commentary so you can really hear all the amazing background music!
Those videos were very good, I really enjoyed hearing the sounds and music that will actually be featured in the game. And it all again looks very promising.
Huh, weird. My FF isnt showing up linked Youtube videos now. How inconvenient, found them anyways ans watching now. I always find E3 dev talk interesting but also distracting at times. Good to see some footage
Calling it now. Game of the year and RPG of the year at least on PC. This looks miles better than anything Bethesda has done yet and the rest of TES and Fallout 3 are exceptional.
Edit: Mayhap Mass Effect 3 was pushed to 2012 in order to dominate awards due to lack of competition?

Ehhh IDK, it IS Beth. They dont exactly in my mind make the "best" rpgs (well....ever since morrowind mind you!). They're solid for fun and sandboxing (and modding!) but I think other companies make more exceptional games.
It'll have a GOTY though probably, almost all super mega hype titles do even if hardcore fans disagree
That being said, I already pre ordered my copy back in august

Future Publishing (a big magazine publisher in the UK) had a very nice cross over of previews this month. Four journalists from four different Games mags.. Official Xbox 360, Official PS3, Edge (a sort of more refined, we're for gamer vets type multiformat mag) and PC Gamer went to test the game.
They had three hours to play, and all four had a different tale to tell at the end of the three hours. It's too much info to replicate at the mo, will try and get a few snippets up later for our international cousins, but from the reads out of two of the four mags, PC Gamer, and Official Xbox, I am well and truly stoked for this game now.

Spoiler:
The official achievement list for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been released online and contains the usual suspects.
There are 50 achievements for 1000 Gamerscore with the most time consuming of them being getting your character to level 50. You can check out the list below but be careful of spoilers
Some of those really grab my interest, namely these:
Taking Sides - We can join the army now? Awesome!
Married - Maybe a bit more depth added here, and with Radiant Story, maybe a bit less linear too. All we have to base in-game marriage off of thus far is Fable unfortunately, but i'm sure Bethesda have done a lot better than Lion "Half-Arsed" Head.
Artificer - It's going to be interesting how they do this. Potion-making will probably be the same, as might enchanting your gear, but forging weapons and armour leaves room for a wealth of options. It'll have to be slightly linear, but as long as it isn't just a drop-down list of "Iron Longsword, Steel Longsword, Elven Longsword..." then i'll be happy.
It might be a bit much to hope for deep customisability though.
Well they have said that there is going to be a greater focus on making and creating new armour/weapons Avatar, so hopefully there will be lots of customisability, that would be pretty sweet.

I'd assume that the joining the army is similar to the function of the fighters guild in oblivion.
Married thing is a nice touch, nice to think they are adding potential relationships, or at least a quest that acts like one.
Not had much time this week, but will try and get some snippets of that interview up. I will quickly throw on this bit mind.
Spoiler:
All four journalists started in the exact same spot, and this is a brief sum up of each of their three hours.
(Leon - Official Playstation Magazine) Headed west to nearby town of Riverwood, helped an elf keep his girlfriend and gained him as a companion. Playing tag with local children and then went west and killed a Dragon.
(Jon - Official Xbox Magaine) Sabotaged the same couple Leon helped and was rewarded with a song. Explored the intricate Embershaft Mine as he moved North to the town of Whiterun.
(Martin - Edge) Headed southwest slaying Necomancers and Spectral Cats to the settlement of Falkreath. Took a Quest to slay bandits, then circled around to Whiterun in the north east and joined the Companions Guild.
(Tom - PC Gamer) Turned around from the town in the distance and went east in the opposite direction to Riften. Stole a Horse on the way, and caused a huge battle between two sets of Guards chasing him. Explored the ratways under the city.
The PC Gamer guy also said he wasn't expecting much of a leap from Oblivion, he was wrong.
Some of those things make me very excited, different results on the same quest, and not just a 'didn't do it the right way' not much happens. Minor details like being able to play tag with kids?
The PC GAmer guy also went into detail with the combat system, the detail there sounds immense. Mixing magic with regular attacks. For example in his words, 'an archer who can slow time while he aims, knock people off their feet with his arrows and run like the wind between shots.'
I'm nervous about the whole "get married" business. Games that try to do relationships need to ask themselves a question -- is this something that will actually matter (Mass Effect style) or is this just mechanical (Fable style)? Neither of those really seem to fit the immersive but lonesome gamescapes of TES titles.

Tbh I see it being the latter(Fable Style) while yes they could weave it into the main story somehow like Fable 2.
Spoiler:
He kills you family if you get married before a certain point.
However I see it as just one way to add in some side quests.
This is about the point someone posts the glorious PC gaming master race picture right?
Um.. Mods maybe? I donno. I remember playing Fallout 3, loving it but cursing it for when it ended, and my PC friend said "Shame about mods. Or lack of fnar fnar fnar" to which I didn't think "Hmnmm. Maybe I should get a better PC", I just through "goddamn PC".
Some people will go on and on about the better textures and graphics, but I just got a very high end PC, and played Metro 2033, which played on Xbox also. It felt better on Xbox to be perfectly honest, and it's an FPS!
Tbh while I did come out with the obvious Mods and Graphics, I do not intend to start a flame war over the PC vs Xbox as personally I have both and use each for gaming.
Usually I use my Xbox for either gaming with friends or any general FPS multiplayer.
Pc for most other games.
So im not going to come out with the whole "PC is bettar tan Xbawks hawr hawr" crap, coz both are good for what they do.
Personally, I think the PC community only has the console community simply because of random mods that will pop up. Ive played Morrowind on PC AND the xbox and found the xbox version to be FAR more enjoyable to play. I couldnt cheat, so I had to figure out or work at, beating something, or getting enough money to buy something and so on. On the PC it was "Oh gak I need more money *open construction set* There a bagillion gold....you know what, Ill alos just drop the weapon in this crate.....infact while Im at it, Ill make this sword heal health 25pts CE and restore fatigue 25pts CE and slowfall and so on and so on and so on"
The xbox I had to just figure out a go around. I was a member of the elderscrolls forums when that game was new, adn PC users would talk about how fun it was to have the "Icarian scrolls of flight" spells and all that, well I made my own version on the xbox that took some real doing but when I was done with it, I was much more satisfied that I pulled it off. It was AS good as those scrolls, but it was a cast spell, that allowed me to jump from Balmora to Vivec in 3 leaps, and I didnt die from it (Hurray slowfall!) I had to use the intelligence cheat (alchemy FTW) to make it work but I did it.
It's like the difference between collecting, smelting, crafting and then building an entire true-scale Eiffel tower in Minecraft- or copypasting it in WorldEdit.
However, there are some mods that are rather nice- things like OOO (Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul) that, instead of adding infinity plus one swords and such, simply change the style of gameplay. I know there's a mod out there to add Elseweyr to Oblivion, with new quests, items and a complete additional continent to explore, or the Morrowind expansion mods, which are attempting to recreate the whole of mainland Morrowind, instead of just Vvardenfell.
It really just depends on what mods you're looking for. I was attempting (may still get back to it) to create a new Guild in Morrowind with a mod- something to be the House Hlaalu of the Guilds, where Fighters are Redoran and Mages are Telvani.
And it's not so much that TES is better or worse (I agree, I much preferred Morrowind on my xBox) but that Consolers simply can't have access to those mods.

The 360 can't handle certain aspects of gaming graphics, in fact if you look at games like Fight Night Round 3 the boxer's tattoo will get blurry when it moves compared to the PS3 version where it stays as crisp lines. Also, for games like Halo, they look really nice but the game pixelates enemies if they're farther away in order for the game to run properly. As a system the 360 lacks certain processing power for those graphics, in fact a lot of people say that sports games look better on the PS3 compared to the 360, although the PC probably has even better graphics.

That's because you can update PC's unlike consoles (not saying one is better than the other I like them both).
See, I experienced the opposite. Since going to PS3 mainly, the graphics seem a bit more rough than on the Xbox. The Xbox versions of games seemed to look far, far nicer and smoother.

but really, Ill be buying a brand sparkly new PC within the next year Id imagine, this one is finally starting to do.....weird stuff. I think it is! Very generous, best part is, he would be greatful. Because right now, he has a calculator I duct taped to an old 13 inch tv screen, that I pass off as a computer

That's different, that's called appreciating how difficult it used to be to use a computer.

So, after 3 emails to the website, and asking in 4 different stores in various towns that I've been to recently, the GAME website has finally announced that those that pre-order the game will recieve the fancy cloth map.
That took a while, but means that I now need to come up with £32...
I've been replaying DA2 lately to get back into RPG mode. Is Skyrim gonna be like that, where no matter what you do you pretty much still get the same outcome in the end with just a few details different? Or open ended where anything can happen? I just don't want something so open ended that I end up wandering around lost aimlessly which is kinda what happened to me in Morrowind.

And isn't that pretty much what Bethesda RPGs are all about, open worldness? I'd be surprised if someone bought say, Oblivion and said "Damn, I didn't expect to just go anywhere. I thought it'd be a long series of corridors (tubes)".
OK maybe a better question would be ... is a hint book gonna be pretty much mandatory? I mean, I do wanna get to the end, but I don't mind always having side quests to do too. I just don't wanna get stuck in the middle somewhere and just get bored and move onto something else.
I was planning on popping into town during one of my free periods and get it on friday, but I suddenly remembered earlier that I'm not 18, so I'm gonna have to wait till saturday so my dad can verify that I can get it when he picks me up from school.

I don't see how you can get bored with these kind of games unless you have done everything.. that might just be me though.

I'll admit that I used the wiki for oblivion because I wanted to get it out of the way by the end of the summer holidays.
I get obsessed with a certain thing until either it bores me or I finish it, so I forced myself to finish it very quickly so I wouldn't have that "Just five more minutes" thing going on during term time, when I have my A level exams coming up.
Which kind of begs the question of why am I allowing myself to buy Skyrim during term time anyway?
I read the entire oblivion wiki two years before ever playing the game meaning I could half remember some of the things while experience the game in general as a new game.
I always start using wiki's on second playthroughs or when I want to do something really specific. Like model my entire character around certain items for the hell of it.
I don't wanna rush through the game, I wanna be able to do it all.. I just remember playing morrowind on my old Xbox, I was on vacation and I never left the house for the whole 9 days. But by that time I was just kinda wandering around not knowing what else I needed to do, and I guess some other game caught my attention and then I never went back
I went to Gamestop to preorder it tonight, and there was a mob of like 100 people out there. Apparently waiting for midnight madness for MW3. There was an energy drink truck out there too. I couldn't even get near the door so I'll just go back tomorrow I guess.
I only used the Oblivion wiki a few months ago, when I played it once more before selling it a buddy of mine, and that was to do the Daedra shrines. Im one of those guys that likes to do a TV show style game. You know, wander from one adventure to another with no real rhyme or reason to it Its funner that way
Game Mania They release almost everything earlier. I got Space Marine 5 days early too. Always pre-order there. Also got limited edition for price of regular (not the collectors mind you).
So who else is going to try and become a werewolf as soon as possible?
I saw some game footage of it and it was pretty awesome. When you feed on people blood goes flying everywhere. You can run really fast and leap up on houses rather easy.

Crap. Couldnt find it on da interweb, and cus I thought 'collectors edition!' I bought it. I would have asked it for Christmas if I knew that.
Don't be dissapointed, the map was announced by Bethesda to only be available in pre-orders and the collector's edition.
Technically after pre-orders have finished there won't be any way to get the map other than the collector's edition (although I'm sure that shops will be giving them out after pre-orders have finished)
Just so you know, Dual wielding = max damage output but no blocking as far as I've noticed. Not that matter with my home made steel armor.
Also, crafting is in BIG TIME. You can make all types of armor and weapon now. Items like hides can be turned into leather at a tannery. Ore can be smelted into ingots etc. etc.
For an Iron helm for instance, you need 3 iron ingots and 5 leather scraps(or is it straps?) Stuff like that. Smithing perks give you acces to new materials (steel to dragon) and one perk lets you upgrade magic items.
You can sharpen weapons on grindstones, and hammer armors into better shape on workbenches to increase armor rating.
Have not tangoed with alchemy or enchanting yet.

So you have it on 360 or ps3?
PC gamers cant do it until 11/11/11, as what you have is practically illegal until the 11th.
It's been a long five year wait. Oblivion came out during my last year of undergrad. I remember telling my friend, can you imagine how different our lives will be by the time we play the next Elder Scrolls game? Five years have passed and I went to law school, moved into my own place, got married ... I'll probably have kids by the time Elder Scrolls 6 comes along. But, in the meantime, wonderful, awesome, incredible Skyrim awaits ...
I can hardly believe I'll be playing Skyrim this Friday.
I am really trying to figure out if I should just say damn the torpedos and get Skyrim this week. Saints Row, is tempting, but I really think I'll be more interesting in playing Skyrim, especially with a few days of twiddling my thumbs coming up.

360, and please refrain from calling it Illegal would you? I bought 100% legal from a store. Can't help they started selling without the greenlight.
There are some rumors going around my school (and I'm sure other places as well) as to whether or not you can ride dragons in Skyrim. If you can, I will totally fly as high as I can over a settlement, jump off, and snipe someone as I fall to my death.

Crime system so far is better, if you have high rep with a town they will even ignore small offenses. Just don't kill chickens in front of people.
Leveling works kind of the same as in, you lvl up skills to gain a level. But instead of stats you just choose between increasing: magicka, health or stamina(which also adds max weight. And you get 1 perk per level. Consult your wiki for all the perks

K thanks, that's all I can think of at the moment.
Is there any sign of a relationship system, either in general, or specific individuals (like in Fable) or is it looking like the Marriage Achievement is quest related?

No clue how you actually get the deed done.
Yeah, I have been trying, poking around and seeing what reactions I get. I thought the fruit vendor chick might be a good one to try, apparently she is a super prude though.
Well, killed my first random encounter dragon yesterday, And now I can breathe fire, huzzah.
Also (BIG spoiler about the companions, the warrior guild in this game)
Spoiler:
The companions, while being the warrior guild, is made up of werewolves
Also, I am a werewolf. It gives you an activated power that transforms you, you go into 3rd person, gain insane amounts of health, stamina and speed, but you can't interact with anything except for killing stuff. Also doubles as a good travel form cause of the run speed + stamina:3
No clue, haven't gotten into that part of the game yet.
All I do know is that only females have said things related to this issue, and I'm male. So take from that what you will.
All I do know is that Nord women have giant knockers and attitudes to match.
Also, everyone BE WARNED!
The accents in this game are terrible! I swear to god that the courtmage in whiterun has been voiced by a Dutchmen, and our english accent sounds dumb!

I already got it fixed. If you have issues with graphics on your Xbox360 and you installed the game to the hard drive, just uninstall and install it back on. Fixes it all up.

Yeah, my first random Dragon encounter I nearly pooped myself. I heard the roar and immediately started spinning in circles to find it. Then I got my fireball from killing it and THE WORLD WAS SO MUCH BETTER! I found a third voice power also, it seems almost useless though.
As for Werewolf, I wasn't sure if I wanted to become one or not, but I decided to go ahead and go for it. I have no regrets, I will probably cure it later on though, just to see how Vampirism is.

I can't wait until skyrim releases. Mom wont let me go to midnight release though ='( ( School night) I will have to decide when I get it, thinking dark elve sneaky marksmen, but might go Argonian warrior.
Game rocks been playing non stop for 10 hours. I will say this having logged many hours playing morrowind/oblivion, the game feels very similar. Horses still blo, tho.
Can you arrest people on the spot and take bribes? That would be so cool.
I don't know, I haven't joined it, just heard about it. They're dicks, they already tried to tell me I was in a restricted area in the middle of the woods and that I had to pay a 100 fine (it was very heavily implied that they were being corrupt).
Well mine was dispatched yesterday, so after waking with some mild toothache (had a filling two days ago and I think I was grinding my teeth last night, so aggrivated it.) I am sitting her expectantly, hoping the postie will bring me a lovely little console game shaped box.
Wish I didn't have to work all weekend - I'm having a blast with the game. I love the killing animations you sometimes get in melee, and being a werewolf is just amazing.
Played for 4 hours straight when it decrypted on Steam at 11 PM. Still haven't come close to the main storyline.
Are you guys that have it for consoles (specifically ps3) having any problems with temporary freezing, sound delays or anything like that? I want to play this game, but my experience with Bethesda games is that they don't run smoothly in the open world. I've had this sort of thing playing morrowind on PC, Oblivion on Xbox and Fallout 3 on PS3. Have they done any optimisation this time around?

I also await my delivery, although our postman is incompetant, so i'm not holding out as much hope as I normally would and I fully expect it to arrive tomorrow instead, along with all the stuff that was meant to be delivered today.
Does Prime use posties to deliver it, or does it use the parcel service that drives up to your door? If the latter, i'd give it some more time since it probably has to make a LOT of rounds.
Just friday? I think I'm gonna be stuck inside for a couple weeks
picking mine up after work, I have a bunch of old games I'm trading in too since I haven't touched em in a year +, and they have some kinda 30% trade in bonus at gamestop if you put it toward buying the game.

I have it for Xbox and it does freeze up a good amount in the menus. Only for a few seconds, but it does. Sorry, can't speak for the PS3.
As imark said, only in menus, haven't had any bugs yet ingame except for a headless witch corpse remaining upright after decapitation, which was funny.
Work is killing me today, I stayed up late to start the DL off Steam, expecting it to take all night and a little of the day to DL.
Woke up, and checked the man cave before my shower and saw it was done and waiting.
Checked to see if I was sick, and I wasn't.... CRAP! The work day has never taken so long. And though it is heresy, I am supposed to play 40k tonight, but I think the nids are going to have to take a week off...
KingCracker wrote:Leaving in about 30 minutes to get mine. I can only goof off long enough to say that it works, then its getting wrapped for Christmas
You know what they say about Bethesda games right? That the only way to be sure they work is to reach the 50% mark for game completion in order to allow the game to warm up enough that glitches may start.
If the Imperial Legion is corrupt then I'm all over it. I want to be the corrupt officer this time, making people pay fines for not speaking Imperial dialect or for being Khajiit...
Bought it last night on Steam, and played until 2:30 in the morning O_o
I have to say, it's completely -ruined- Oblivion for me I will never be able to go back to that game after playing Skyrim. It's also the first Bethesda game I've played that hasn't had a -single- bug yet. I can't believe I'm saying this, but they may have actually won my approval here! Plus, the Imperials are now Roman Legions, which auto-wins no matter how bad the game -could- have been.
Hell, the recommended requirements aren't even demanding at all, and yet everything looks so much better than Oblivion. I also like the vast improvements to the in-game menus. Way more streamlined than before. The new equipment upgrade system is also very welcome to stay, and it seems that repairing gear is no longer necessary. I -love- that. Animations are so much smoother it's not even comparable to Oblivion or Fallout, and the finishing moves are really fun to watch when you get one, though the 3rd person ones can ruin immersion when you're not expecting them.
Now then, I'll have to stop here, because I've got some Skyrim to play.
So are there actual classes and stuff? or is it more like, if you start wearing a lot of armor and chopping people with axes you develop your warrior skills, or if you start tossing fireballs a lot you are a mage, but really everyone can do just about everything?
Necros wrote:So are there actual classes and stuff? or is it more like, if you start wearing a lot of armor and chopping people with axes you develop your warrior skills, or if you start tossing fireballs a lot you are a mage, but really everyone can do just about everything?
No classes, you got it right on the last bit. You level up skills and get perks every level. You can put a perk into a skill set. Say something like, you are leveling up your One-Handed Weapons. You need a certain skill level in them to unlock certain perks within them. Usually 30-60-80-100 I believe.
Been loving it so far, seem to be going Mage/combat at the moment, something satisfying about a sword and flamethrower aimed at your opponents face.
There looks like there is so much to do in this game, crazy, never mind coming back and trying different styles, Chaotic Evil characters and so forth. Going loose a few months in this one.
Well I got to play for about 2 hours today, before telling my wife to just take it! I had to, I just....didnt want to see anymore fething hell this game is awesome so far, and do I really have to say just how beautiful it is? I found myself actually looking around and following animals just to see the forest and such. Such a cool ass game. And I killed some Draugrs (SP?) which is always a blast
Finding it pretty tough if i'm honest, tougher than oblivion, but will defo persevere. Think i should spend more time in the towns doing little quests rather than exploring. Some of the 'Field' creatures are quite tough imo. Oh and i am not really sure how to lock pick even though i have been doing them all.
I must say the shouts seem UTTERLY pointless atm, you have to wait a fifteen second recharge to momentarily staggers guys?! Seems a bit harsh, the speed burst one is even worse. Wow ONE speed burst, i am Yawning in anticipation of the 'Puzzles' it will be used (solely) for.
Another thing is that the game really isnt very user friendly, we're talking Morrowind levels here. I had no idea there was a sprint until i hit it accidently, also it doesnt really explain that the choice of race effects what skills you start off high in. Later on When the man asks you to do a shout, it doesnt even tell you what button to press or that they have to be equipped from the menu.
Weirdly the only good tutorial was for the various crafting stuff. Which i must say is quite fun.
My funniest moment so far was when i snuck up on a giant, did a critical backstab...... Which took off ~5% of his health and caused him to turn round and instagib me .....
I'm using the Battlemage Template from the Guide and finding magic to be quite fun.
So far I've been instagibbed by three things: Snowy Sabre Cat while exploring a mountain, Three Giants at a campfire( at the same time), and the Super Hag at Orphan Rock(got my revenge here when I came back as a Werewolf). Killed my Second Dragon today while I was walking to the Mage's College for the first time( after 48 straight minutes of combat against said dragon. When he landed, I was trapped in a Ruined Fort and couldn't get to him without getting hit by the flame breath, followed by a Tactical retreat where I would heal myself and try again) I'm level 8 right now.
Yeah... I think if this game does anything, it's that it'll teach players to respect NPCs that are bigger than you. Until you're the right level, of course.
I apparently can wait, because, although I've pre-ordered, already paid for it, and own my own car with nothing better to do all day, I still haven't picked mine up. I'm actually kinda amazed I've held out this long.
But I know what I'm going to do. Starting character is going to go all Battlemage on everything, definitely. Prolly gonna go with Nuva, my Breton that I've played in every Elder Scrolls game (she likes Axes and ranged magic, along with Heavy Armour and Alchemy. Not the best Enchanter, though...) and then I'm prolly going to see if Fro'zhirr, my Khajiiti ice-Sorcerer will work better in this game. Also? I'm going to have to try some sort of Dervish character that runs around with two maces.
Ice Magic is really effective. Not as much resists it as you would think, and even if it is resisted, whatever you pegged with the Ice Spell is slowed.
Hey guys, im new to elder scrolls with skyrim being my first purchase (i know, sad life i lived) and im wondering if anyone could help me out...
1- ice trolls, hit stupidly hard and have insane regen.. how the heck do i deal with it being heavy armour/2h
1- how do i charge my 'special' weapons? i've got a kickass 2h axe but it won't allow me to charge it..
To charge your magical Weapon, you need a filled Soul Gem.
You fill a soul gem by killing a monster while under the effects of a Soul Trap Spell. Certain monsters have Larger souls and therefore need larger Soul Gems.
Undead, daedra, and Robots do not have souls and cannot be soultrapped.
You can only trap human souls in Black Soul gems, which I have not found yet in Skyrim other than the Black Star but in Oblivion, were created at a necromancer's Shrine using a Grand Soul Gem ( More below)
The Shrine of Azura, near the Mage's College, has a Quest where you can get the daedric artifact Asura's Star, which is a reuseable soul gem OR The Black Star, which is a Reuseable Black Soul Gem
All Bow to Iur'Tae'Mont, Owner of the Tome of Skyrim( the Limited Edition guide)!
Been at it for a couple hours now.. I'm wandering around the barrow something or other, one of the dungeons near the first town. I'm pretty much all over the place with my character.. a little magic, melee and sneaking. I think I like sneaking so I'm gonna work at that some more. I'll prolly go for all thief stuff with just a little melee and magic thrown in
So, you can pretty much level up every single skill there is to the max, but you only ever get 1 perk per level?
My funniest moment so far was when i snuck up on a giant, did a critical backstab...... Which took off ~5% of his health and caused him to turn round and instagib me .....
Take THAT you vial fiend! *pin prick followed by a puzzled ANGRY Giant turning around*
Does Skyrim "scale" to your character's level like Oblivion or is it more like Fallout where there were just places you didn't want to go as a Level 1 Noob?
I heard it scales a bit, but nothing like Oblivion. I hope thats correct, because I once beat Oblivion and was like lvl9 or 10. I mean....no fething way would that happen. In the scheme of things, that would be like a town guard or a bouncer taking on the whole of Oblivion
I'm not catching levels of things, but I have walked into things that took me out in a single hit, or I needed to change tactics on and use lots of health potions to beat.
Giants and Mammoths are definately above your comfort zone at the beginning, instant kill from either as a lvl 5.
On a side note..
Spoiler:
I am thinking like Werewolves (cheers Soladrin for that info) being a vampire is in the game. I found a ruined tower with a group of Vamps in, after some close scrapes, it would seem my character is infected, had a couple of odd messages since the tower when its nightfall. No other signs yet, but I will let folks know if I go full vampire.
Ahh yes, Giants. I made the same mistake - saw one and my "MAIM! KILL! BURN!" instinct came out. I hit it with my sword, and then promptly got backhanded with such force that I flew through the air and crashed into the side of a mountain some 100 feet away. Queue world's smallest violin.
Put a bucket on a shopkeepers head and you can rob him blind, and he won't ever notice.
Fight a dragon/giant/mammoth/troll from behind a rock and it wont be able to do any damage to you.
Every conversation is like talking to a manikin,
Every building/dungeon is a new loading screen
It's lacking any kind of climbing animation, so its still running down a 80 degree slope
corpsesarefun wrote:Skryim rule one, don't talk about skyrim.
Skyrim rule two, don't feth with giants.
I -did- manage to kill one last night. There's an Orc village in the rift, near the Imperial camp and Darklight tower, with a gated wooden wall. I ended up descending the mountainside behind the village to get there, then promptly passed through on my way north. No sooner had I stepped onto the main road some 50 feet away, then I heard this loud grunt and my screen started shaking. I ran my sorry Roman-looking ass back up to the village, closed the gate, and spent about 10 minutes unloading arrows into its face while it stood on the other side of the wall being angry at me
Toastedandy wrote:I'm finding it fairly buggy tbh.

Bethesda already knew about this bug before but decided to keep it in (similarly so with the bug that allows Giants to play cricket/baseball/other ball&bat based game with you and knock you across Skyrim). If you shove a bucket onto a guard's head you can commit any crime in front of him and he won't notice too.
Toastedandy wrote:I'm finding it fairly buggy tbh.

That's not a bug. I'd like to know how well you can see when -you- have a bucket on your head! It's comic relief, and I for one love it. Cracks me up seeing someone walking around with a bucket jammed on their skull.

Well that's not a bug either. Clearly those are just the ones that were dropped on their heads as baby Dragons/Giants/Mammoths/Trolls, and don't realize they can just go -around- the rock. No, in all seriousness though, I haven't seen this bug yet, and I've killed 3 dragons and a Giant. Closest I came to this was being up on a wooden wall firing at a giant, but he couldn't reach me anyway.
Every conversation is like talking to a manikin
Clearly someone never played Morrowind, Oblivion, or Bethesda's attempts to do Fallout. The animations are -way- better than any of those games. At least their faces show expression during main conversation now.
Every building/dungeon is a new loading screen
This isn't a bug. In fact, this isn't a point at all. If you want a fantasy RPG with no loading screens, go LARP.
It's lacking any kind of climbing animation, so its still running down a 80 degree slope
Not practical to bother adding it in. Adding in a rock-climbing function for scaling mountains would be a huge amount of work in an open-world game. This isn't a bug either. In fact, see above.
oh, and the horses Id prefer too walk.
The horse animations you do get a point for. They really are painful, but they've always been terrible from Bethesda. Skyrim's horse animations though are by and far the most awful, crappy thing I've ever laid eyes on. Thankfully we have fast travel.
I'd just like to comment on how absolutely beautiful Skyrim is compared to past titles. It really is a sight to behold.
The dragon fights are by far my favorite. I've killed around 5-6 of them (I'm around level 16, just finished the quest where I have to go up to High Hrothgar to see the Greybeards) and they really are random. I've had some that fly above me forever, breathing fire, and some that drop right in front of me and try to eat me.

Its a fairly glaring bug, after sitting behind a rock, I emerged to see the dragon so bewildered it ceased to attack me. Happened with the second dragon in the story, and with a pair who ambushed me when I was LOTRing it in the mountains. Giants and mammoths are no problem with a 4 foot wall.

Clearly someone who has. I can see the vast improvements made in the game, but I suppose I must of expected too much.

Not practical too bother?! An animation for travelling up a mountain would of been extremely easy too do, given the amount of investment that has gone into this game.
Not to say I don't like the game, in fact I love it, but its not perfect.
I just joined the Stormcloaks because they want to crush the Empire....and they seem to have that 8 pointed star as their symbol......seems kinda familiar.
I've been trying to get someone to trade me Skyrim on Steam for a few days now, since I can't afford to spend the cash at the moment. No one seems to want to though sadly. Most of the stuff I have for trade is Warhammer games too.
Here's hoping I can get it soon. Hope everyone who has it already is enjoying it.
I think its been decent, but annoying as well, Its not really "open ended"
For example, if you kill half the people it totally feths the game, and I went with the empire guy at the start and then about 15 mins in thought "feth it ill go with the rebels instead!" stuck one into his back, got him down to 1% health, and he refused to die.
Then he got back up 10 seconds later on 100%, was incandescent with rage, chased me for 13 miles over the foothills and then got his uncle to try and kill me as well!
So I started again.
Its been way more fun since I started doing what Im told, not stabbing all and sundry, and basically following all the quests like a good lad.
It's a really fun game, but its hardly "non linear"
What in the nine hells where Bethesda thinking, a game where multiple play throughs are extremely likely, and they keep the silly, count up the saves through all the characters like Oblivion had, but make it worse by having all the characters on the same list on a tiny screen.
Why they couldn't take a leaf out of Bioware's book and do it like Mass Effect, where you select a character then load a save.
Heck it could have been quite cool, a little screen with a snapshot of your character design, with their saves beside them.
This way you have to be perfectly aware all the time, one slip up when playing into the early morning while droopy eyed and hours of work, if not a whole character could be lost.

Not a devestating issue, but bloody annoying.
Sad but true.
However since I'm playing on the xbox (haters gonna hate) I'm just going to make seperate profiles for all my characters.

Easy? Sure. Way too time consuming to justify it? Definately. There are so many paths to get up mountains in the game as-is, that anyone actually looking for a sheer rock-face to scale is just being silly. Besides, if you just scaled everything, you'd miss a lot interesting stops on the way. Scaling fort/tower walls and building with a grapple or something would've been an excellent addition though, and would've been great for players making a thief or assassin. I would've liked to see better siege mechanics for fort battles, as well as actually having to conquer cities instead of just all the forts around them. Siege towers, Onagers and Ballistas ho!
Seriously though, I think that's one thing they could've done -way- better. I was so... underwhelmed by the battles and Legion camps. It's like they just pulled a Kinect and tossed it in as a last minute idea.
I joined the Stormcloaks because the Legion just sounds like a bunch of racist interloping bastards.
I'm a Drow, so I feel kind of awkward when they say "Only Nords in Skyrim!", but whatever.
I'm pretty sure playing as a melee character with weapons and armor is a lot more fun than being a Wizard. The spells look unbelievably amazing, but I just feel that being a Nord with heavy armor and a two-hander would feel more rewarding.
Basically the first bit of the game asks you to go with either the Stormcloak Nord that was riding in the wagon with you, or the one that was helping the Imps out.
And look at it this way- most of the things like climbing, seiges and such? Those will probably start showing up in the next couple Elder Scrolls titles. They've still got, lets see- Elsweyr, Black Marsh, Valenwood and Summerset Isle to go, as well as the possibility of going back to Morrowind (after the Ministry of Truth crashed, and Red Mountain erupted, that place really changed), High Rock or Hammerfell.
And the wierd thing is that the save/load screens were like that back in Morrowind, Morathi. God, that game got almost everything right. Wish they could do a re-release of it, taking the story, menues, all that, with the combat and physics engine of Skyrim. Morrowind's lack of regenerating Magicka and Health, though, and the ability to effectively teleport and travel in the 3rd dimension.
I honestly don't remember that bit...
Was that the bit before you enter the keep?
Was that what those two asshats were arguing about?
That explains a lot...
KingCracker wrote:Co-Op? That isnt necessary in this game. Jeez, next youll be wanting an ElderScrolls MMO
This isn't Fable, this is Elder Scrolls, its better.
Although I was disappointed to find out that when you join the legion you don't get any special policing powers, although I like the conquest of everything.
In fact I may just have it so that I choose an Imperial citizen and have him marry a nord just so that I can say my character has conquered Skyrim and mean it literally and metaphorically. Yes, my character will be a complete dick and I will laugh whenever I think of how her parents would feel before realizing that they were killed by my hands. Muahaha, muahahahaha!
I also have to give them credit for having a quest called "The Screams of Windhelm", which is a sneaky little reference that made me chuckle. No I am not that far into the game, I just worked from 7am to 3:30pm and from 7-9 we don't have too many customers, but we do have game guides. Actually wait, that may have been the guide's characterful name for the section of the quest, not sure. It involves Windhelm though.

Apparently Lycanthropy actually cures Vampirism, as far as it goes Lycanthropy is much more socially acceptable only because you can choose to transform once every 24 hours game time. However changing into a wolf in front of a guard counts as a major crime. Vampirism should be sucking your health down if you go out into the sunlight. Otherwise you should be getting some new spells and resist frost while getting a weakness to fire.
So, finally got it, and started playing. Against all my prior expectations, I decided to go with a wizened old man slinging magicka around like it was beads on Mardi-Gras. He's even Imperial. I never go Imperial! But when I watched a Let's Play, and saw those Imperial battlecasters slinging fireballs at Alduin, I was like dang.
My one concession is to have a big-ass hammer that I hit folks with when my magicka runs out.
Oh, and Conjuration is absolutely astounding in this game. You actually reanimate dead bodies instead of just summoning random corpses from thin air. As in, I just (re) killed that Draugr, and now Im'a gonna make it fight for me.
The Crafting system is really deep, too, requiring you to sacrifice enchanted items to learn how to make them. So very glad they brought back Enchanting as a skill.
Prolly my favorite part is how drastically they shifted the plot forward
The events in the 200 years between the Oblivion Crisis and Skyrim
Spoiler:
the Summerset Isles conquered Valenwood and Elswyr, seceded from the Empire and are now called the Aldmeri Dominion
They invaded Cyrodill, reaching the Imperial city and pretty much said, "We've made our point. Who wants to Negotiate?
The Aldmeri Dominion had Talos REMOVED from the pantheon of the Divines.
Black Marsh left the Empire. Followed by Black Marsh conquering Morrowind.
The Empire is now: Cyrodill, Skyrim(barely) Hammerfell( who are not happy with the Agreement between the Empire and Aldmeri and continued to fight the Dominion for 5 years after the war had been declared over), and High Rock.

gak got crazy since the end of the 3rd Era.
I'm sad by what happened to morrowind, I loved the Dunmer, oh well, we'll take it back from the invading n'wah

I think you misunderstood me. I'm not asking for them to add another game mechanic, just too attach an animation script to the character, so when he is walking down an 80 degree slope, it doesn't look the same as walking in a straight flat line. Which would not take more than a week for 1 professional to do.
Although that scaling fort walls would be fantastic, but that's more of ubisofts forte.

My little trick that I use to take out dragons "quickly" is when I hear one, duck into a stand of trees... for some reason, they cant strafe me through the trees, so they drop in, and i can hit em with a shout, some magic and my axe.. etc. until it dies. So far, I think I have 5 or 6 "shouts" but I have killed 8 or 9 dragons.. its quite fun, but it does interrupt my questing some times :(
So far, I have come across and joined the Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Mage people, the Companions (who make you a werewolf)... My guess is that the Companions have taken the spot of the Fighters Guild from Morrowind and Oblivion.
Does anyone happen to know if you can be a werewolf AND a vampire at the same time?
I have been playing it for only 2 hours. Parents didnt allow more :(
But I decided to join Imperial Army. My best friend is in it ^^ (ie, the Imperial that helps you at the start)
So I'm guessing you can't... but does anyone know if there's a way to redo your perks? I kinda spread mine out all over the place and now I'm wishing I concentrated more on specific stuffs
I went mad with my perks, but not TOO mad. They're mainly focussed in Smithing (damn the complete lack of any materials for intermediate-level equipment), One-Handed, Ranged, Light Armour, and Stealth, which equates to about points in each given my level.
Also, Hagravens are a bloody pain in the arse, especially the ones in the

Companion's quest to kill the Witches so you can cure the Companion's 'leader'
. I only just managed to kill them with an elven bow and ancient Nord arrows + various poisons, in conjunction with beating on them with an axe when they came too close and desperately healing myself between Fire Breath dragon shouts.
