However since I'm playing on the xbox (haters gonna hate) I'm just going to make seperate profiles for all my characters.

The only problem I'd see there is if you where trying to get the achievements.

On a side note I think I have discovered an answer to this issue. I ordered two 8gb USB drives last night off Play, and going to put them in the back, didn't realise the Slim had three slots in the back, thought it only had the front two for pad recharging.

So can use them on the same profile, just using different save locations. Will let Aurelia can play on my profile and not be worried about wiping my main character accidently.

I 'm still absolutely loving the Conjuration school. Started my second character, trusty old Nuva the Bretonic Battlemage (axe and shield and spell and plate, a bastion of Magicka and Muscle). The Conjure Familiar thing is rather neat. It's also interesting that you can just run through the tutorial session, way ahead of either of the dudes you're supposed to 'follow' if you want.

Now I'm gonna go see if I can slay a dragon at second level.

My first play through looks like it will be a heavy armoured, mace wielding Breton necromancer (using conjuration) that MAY be a vampire.

Then a Khajjit werewolf for a laugh.

Ok so speaking of raising the dead and all that, anyone know how the necromancy works in this game yet? Because everytime Ive made a magic user, Ive always wanted to get as close to a Necromancer as possible, summoning zombies and litches and the like instead of Daedra. So how is it anyways?

Only thing I've seen so far KC is a stone that grants you ability to summon an undead ally.

My main is a Dark Elf combat Mage mind, so totally plans on giving the locals of Winterhold more reason to fear her race if she gets the chance.

Yeah. Necromancy is awesome. That's why I've been gushing about the Conjuration school. You can summon stuff like normal- haemunculi, familiars, daedra, atronachs, etc.

BUT! There's a spell tome for sale in Riverwood called Raise (or Summon) Zombie. To use that, you actually have to target a corpse, and it'll raise that corpse to fight for you! So yeah, actual Necromancy here. However, once you raise something, and time runs out, it turns into a pile of ash.

They aren't that bad...
Try using drain magicka poison on them, it helps stop the worst of their spells and if you get up close just keep moving to stop them landing a heavy blow on you.

I used all my poisons on them, but the buggy movement meant that landing the poisoned arrow was quite hard after the initial stealth tag, since they would stop, then shift just as I fired and it'd whistle an inch too far away; the lightning drained my magicka too quickly for me to heal myself enough at the same time too.

It doesn't matter anyway, I killed them all, but i'd have preferred it if i'd have been a higher level.

In other news, bears are now, for some reason, able to trounce me in a matter of seconds, where before I would all but take it down from range before it could do anything, and simply end it with a blow from my axe. Doing another quest for the Companions to kill a certain bear, and one has blocked the cave exit (so if I enter, I can't get out again thanks to my backpeddling too far) and both are now able to tear me a new one before I can do anything.

Do dungeons and the likes have a certain time period before they reset?

AFAIK, they dont. Once a dungeon has the "cleared" tag on it on the world map, it *should* be good to go.

What i'm wondering is how dual-wielding ups damage, it appears that you swing each hand equally as fast, and can't swing furiously (one right after the other, there's a cooldown period between strikes), so i've found little point in dual-wielding over HW/S, especially since HW/S offers you a larger degree of protection AND you have the ability to kill enemy power strikes with a well-timed shield bash.

Has anyone found anything to the contrary?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/13 22:22:34

Post by: Karon

If you press both buttons simultaneously, it will perform about 6 strikes rapidly, as your "power attack", which seems to be the only advantage to duel-wielding. I believe DW'ing would be much better if they allowed parrying, which I assume will be modded in soon, as I still don't understand why it wasn't included.

I've gotten over my remorse for starting a mage instead of a Nord warrior. I found a scroll of Blizzard (which I assume I won't get until 100 Magicka and Master level spells, at 78 currently) and it took me about 5 seconds to cast, but tore through a cave full of vampires very rapidly, which surprised me since they are usually very resistant to cold.

for me at least, it was a great boon in the beginning of the game
I could sneak out and kill one enemy, then raise his corpse to disrupt as I killed the rest.

There is a b it of a roadblock as you start getting ramped up as an archer
you dont know any good poisons, you cant afford/don't have any +bow damage items, and your bows arent very good yet, so if you end up wandering into a grove of those bee elementals or whatever, it's a bad situation.
now my bow (superior elven) with 3X crits launch people (via headshot) hilariously against walls and such, and tagging a running dear at a 200+ yards is very satisfying with arrow paths turned off. I highly suggest leveling pickpocket if only to steal infinite arrows from guards.

On another note, I got mushed by a giant, and he launched my corpse into low-orbit, almost as high as the minimap zooms out O_O

Post by: Avatar 720

Being an archer does seem to be quite hard, especially since using bows is slower than it was in oblivion, in exchange for a damage buff, although playing on Adept difficulty, it doesn't feel all that great of an increase.

There are some things that I dread facing as an archer, namely beasts (simply because they're too quick) and tough guys like Ice Trolls (found one on my level 15 and he took on me and a passer by, taking two fire breath shouts and a large amount of steel arrows (I don't have enough orcish or dwarven arrows to warrant them being spent on anything bar dragons) to take down after he ate the passer by). I seem to end up running in and hammering on things to actually kill them, even with 3x sneak damage.

Strangely enough, dragons are one of the easiest kills i've had, simply because of the large gaps in damage whilst they fly around, they also don't seem to do much when they land apart from give you ample time to descale them.

Just a note on marriage for anyone getting a bug with the ceremony not completing - If you're on PC, and you walk up to the altar but Maramel doesn't initiate it, then there's likely an invisible dead body by the door. Seems that if your companion randomly disappears on you at some point, this is where they decide to return - albeit dead. Simply miss/fail your wedding, go back to the NPC you were trying to wed, restart the quest, and have the ceremony again. If the corpse was invisible, it'll appear this time, causing it to fail again. Just rinse and repeat one more time to complete the wedding. If the corpse by the door appeared the first time you had your ceremony, then you only need to reattempt it once, rather than twice.

If you want your dead companion back, and you're on PC, obviously pressing tilde, selecting them in the console mode, and then typing "resurrect" will bring them back.

So I came across a Deathlord today while playing my Imperial battemage/ Werewolf.

He stomped me, but I saved before I saw him. So I look in the Guide. A deathlord is a level 30 mob.

I'm level 13, but when I Werewolf up I can generally take out groups of Ice Trolls with no problem.

So I werewolf up, Dash in and start clawing. Deathlord looks at me, smacks me with a Waraxe and Werewolf drops like a Gold Ingot off a cliff.

Moral of the Story: Giants are not the only scary big bad in Skyrim And Beware if you enter Labyrinthion.

guys skyrim is literally sucking the lifeforce out of me. I played for 48 hours, (stopping to sleep and eat of course) and im level 21, i did play multiple characters though. The game is freaking incredible i cant keep my hands off of it. I did finish the Dark Brotherhood quest line too.

some tips from me

Quick black smithing leveling:
Spoiler:
Most of you guys probably know this, but the quickest way to level up your smithing is to buy as many iron ignots as you can/want and as many leather strips as you want. Go to a forge and repeatedly make iron daggers. You get the same XP as you would for making a dagger as making plate steel (and its a lot cheaper). Before you know it you'll be leveling up super fast!

Free Archery Training:
Spoiler:
Go to Riverwood. There you'll find a wood elf with a bow and arrow, he's the guy that says, "I thought i heard you talking to Sven, oh never mind blah blah blah". Do his quest by taking the letter to the girl. After completing it you can get him to follow you around. Once he's following you, train in Archery. Since you can access his items ("I need to trade with you") you can get your gold back!

Note: If your Archery level is higher than his (Which i believe is fairly low) you cannot recieve training from him

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mScZMoAilk

How to join the Dark Brotherhood
Spoiler:
Go to any Innkeeper/bartender and ask for rumors. They'll tell you theres a boy trying making the black sacrament. This will open up a quest line in Windhelm. Travel to Windhelm. When you reach the house it'll be locked, so pick it. Inside theres the boy and he'll say "It worked it worked!". He'll tell you to kill the orphanage keeper in Riften. Go do it. Once completed go back to the boy to get your reward. When you leave find a bed to sleep in, at an inn or wherever (I did it in the Rorikstead inn) and then you'll wake up in a shack in the middle of nowhere.

NOTE: On IGN it said a courier will give you a note with a black hand imprint that says, "we know" and I think it tells you to sleep in Rorikstead. I, however, never recieved a note. So if you go to bed somewhere and nothing happens, go to sleep in the Rorikstead Inn.

how to get vampirism and where the hell is bloodlet throne?:
Spoiler:
Just letting you guys know if you want to become a vampire the best place to go is bloodlet throne. (from gamefaq forum, Thecorruptangel) Go south to Falkreath, take the southeastern path out of it, and keep going and you'll eventually start climbing a mountain by this waterfall area. There are a few bandits at the foot of this mountain. Anywho, keep going up deep into the mountain and you'll eventually reach it. It's so far in, that if you keep going by the path you'll eventually reach the border between Skyrim and either Cyrodil or Morrowind.

Just go down the road, once you run into bandits you'll know your headed in the right direction.

To get vampirism just set the difficulty to novice and let the vampires hit you. When you contract Vampirism a note will appear on the top of your screen saying "You have contracted Vampirism). It might take several trys of dieing and healing until you get it, but you will eventually. If you health is low run away and heal. Then come back in and raid the dungeon! kill dem all! (remember to set it back to adept or w/e your difficulty is)

To become a werewolf:

Mining:
Spoiler:
There are Ebony and Malachite veins on top of "The throat of the world" You need to do the main quest to get to it

There is quick silver in Dawnstar in the town mine.

There is a Mine near the first guardian stones you encounter. Look 360 degrees around at your compass and a mining pick icon should appear to show you the direction of the mine (Not really worth going there though, however there are bandits to kill)

There is a Gold Mine across from the Blades Sanctuary, down the mountain and across the creek. Be warned, there are many foresworn in the mine. Some are very powerful.

6 steel and 6 iron ignots in Riverwood. You have to steal them but its very easy. Go to the black smith and wait till 2 am or so when theres no one around. Sneak up to the work bench and there will be Ignots underneath the workbench. Easy steal!

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Mining

Best place to feed as a Vampire:
Spoiler:
The best place to feed is EASILY Rorikstead. There is no wall to get in your way and the person you feed off of is a heavy sleeper (lol its true). The person's house I'm talking about is the first farm house on your right if you're coming in from the east road. when you fast travel be sure to high tail it if your a level 4 vampire because the whole town will be on your ass. once your out of the town wait till 2 am and check if the coast is clear. Sneak your way to the door and pick lock it. once inside feed. Simple as that.

Killing Trolls as an Archery:
Spoiler:
Get the whirl wind dragon shout from the main quest line. Buy arrows. Find a troll. Shoot, then shout, then sprint, repeat.

Tip for dual wielders, get 2 different weapons and lots of stamina. I went with axe in right hand and mace in left. This gives you more versatility (with perks too) and the high stamina lets you spam the 4 hit power attack (holding both triggers) which takes 40% health off a frost dragon for me. (playing on expert AFAIK).

Also, I found a mask called Vokung which is all sorts of awesome. Better prices and carry weight, and looks awesome, to bad it's light armor though.

Right now I'm level 19 but my skills are all over the place. I wanna be a sneaker/backstabber/sniper and I picked a lizard guy for my race. I already wasted perk points on spell schools and other things that I just don't need anymore. I wish I could reset my perks and reapply them :(

My sneak skill is around 60 and it's growing fast. I did have the thief stone going at one point, but switched it to the one that's good for all skills. I'm doing good with alchemy and enchanting too. I joined the dark brotherhood and also the college of magic, but didn't do any of their quests yet. I mostly just snuck all over the college stealing everything of value that wasn't nailed down.

What's bugging me the most though is I die just way too easy. Even wimpy enemies can chop me to bitz if I didn't sneak up on em. And mages, forget it, I get blasted into a charred husk before I can do anything. Makes me wonder if I should have just gone for a big tough warrior type all armored up. And for being so tough, I think dragons are actually pretty easy to kill. Slice em up, heal when they take off, rinse & repeat.

If you add a companion, will they follow you anywhere till you send them away? And how many can follow you? So far I have some guardian person that the Jarl assigned to me, and some wizard from some dream quest, but so far I still just wander around alone.

One thing that I thought was kinda funny... some girl gave me a quest to gather bear pelts. So I go out and start hunting. A bear jumps me right outside the town and I decide I don't want to deal with it so I run back to the guards who attack it... but the girl that gave me the quest runs after it too, and gets mauled to death.. quest failed. Guess the bears don't like her either. And another guy out by the stables somewhere, I asked if he was afraid of dragons, he said he didn't think they existed, and then one lands right behind him and chomps him to death.

I mostly just snuck all over the college stealing everything of value that wasn't nailed down.

What's bugging me the most though is I die just way too easy. Even wimpy enemies can chop me to bitz if I didn't sneak up on em. And mages, forget it

It's not easy
the tables rapidly turned once I got the time slowdown perk, knockdown perk, and a shield companion.
I stacked every single item I'm wearing with + bow damage as well, a crit or sneak will 1 shot most humans. ~ lvl 17

Just not sure where I want to put my remaining perks. So far I have 4 more to go to fill up the sneak tree. I like archery, but I only have 1 point there. I used up a couple points in lockpicking and pickpocketing, but I doubt I'll add more to them.. or should I? I added 1 point to destruction and restoration (wasted point :( ) and 1 for light armor and 1 for 1-handed.. should I add to them at all? I think I have 2 points in Archer so far.. I want to get the arrow crit plus the sniper zoom, but the skill isn't high enough yet.

It's hella fun 1-shotting stuff with my sneaky bow, but my sneak attacks just do 3x damage, but with a dagger I can take down almost anything from behind in 1-2 swings. So far though I'm still just using iron arrows, and I have over 100 left.. I have orc and steel also but I figured I'd use up the old stuff first. Do different arrows make a difference or is it more based on the bow? the arrow's damage seems to just be a couple points difference between them.

Post by: Grundz

as far as I understand, bow-ing works like this

your bow does a base damage, your arrows do a base damage, and your skill increases the base damage

/then/ you add all the multipliers, i have like +60% on my skills, and 60 or so % on my items. so total I do something like 45 damage with an iron arrow in my bow.

it snowballs fast, so without alot of the upgrades, its like shooting grapes at someone.
The downside of being a sneaker is that you never really get armor +skills because you usually dont get attacked, which makes the times you /do/ get attacked rather painful

yeah, I think that's exactly the problem I'm having now. I sneak so much I hardly get hit enough for my armor skills to go up, so melee hurts a lot. And I'm sure it's just gonna get worse from here.

This is why I used conjuring until I got a companion (which you get once you go to white-whatever and continue the game story a little)

Armored up companion standing in front of you is great, just be sure to tell them to wait for you when you go sneaking around or they will give you away

Also, without time slowdown you will end up shooting them in the back, alot.

oh, yeah I got that companion also, but so far she's been sitting the inn eating all the time. Never used her. I also found another companion, I forget the name of the town (Dawn something?) but it was in the NW and all the people there were having nightmares. There was a wizardy guy in the inn telling everyone he'll fix it. So after you do his quest he'll become your companion. Was a cool quest too. At the end there was a voice in my head telling me to kill him and I almost did, but I decided to be nice. I did pickpocket him though, just because.

During that quest the guy was unkillable. But I guess if he's your companion he can die just like anything else? I guess I'll try having my guard follow me around.

Anyone else just absolutely LOVE the rune spells?

Any Time I'm ambushed, I hit them with a good old Unrelenting Force to stagger them, Enter my favorites, put frost rune in both hands and drop it right under the ambusher.

If Dual Frost Rune with Extra Frost Damage, and the Destruction Dual Casting Perk doesn't kill them.....

I always forget to use my shouts. I got the very first one, and then I went and did other stuff. I found the shout in the dark bros hideout, and would use that on dragons and tougher things, but I never noticed much of a difference. I just went and did the graybeard stuff and learned the whole first chain and got the speed jumpy one so now I guess I'll use em more often.

I kind of wish there was some easy way to know what buffs or diseases you have on you, like a little icon in the top of the screen like other games do.

Isn't it hard to keep your sleep bonus going? like, if you sleep, then you have to travel somewhere far, by the time you get there your bonus will be gone or going away soon.

Vamps and wolves have very few cons for all the good pros they get.

Wolves do not get extra Exp from sleep, but you will kill damn near everything in Werewolf form.

Vamps have the fire weakness, but are immune to frost and get stack of crazy useful spells.

In my experience it does Zero damage. However knocking even the most hardass dude is VERY useful. Was really Handy when i was fighting some orc warboss with a greatsword. He could kill me in one hit, so i had him chase me round a pillar while unrelenting force charged.

Found a Scimitar early on and still havent swapped it out. Oddly it's only worth 5 gold, which is less than an iron dagger. Also i am not having much trouble with spriggans/Hargravens so far, sabretooth tigers on the other hand... Lets just say thank god theyre scared of fire and cant swim.

I still havent used Jabbawock or whatever outside of the crappy quest you get it in. Keep meaning to.

This game is absolutely amazing.

When I saw how dramatically the gameplay changed, I played around with all the skills a bit to see which I liked the most and could genuinely see using for 500+ hours. I ended up using heavy armor, sneaking, a dagger in one hand, and frost spells/restoration in the other (I also focus on enchanting, but that's more for the endgame than anything).

I have NEVER used daggers in an elder scrolls game. However, in Skyrim, they made a huge difference in the way that daggers work. Now, I can effortlessly weave in and out of an enemy's attacks and land 2-3 hits before I have to dodge again, and I can take any enemy out in one hit with the 15x (!) damage bonus while undetected. Frost spells slow enemies down to make avoiding their attacks even easier, and heavy armor lets me absorb hits that I have to take with absolutely no problem (and with 70 skill points, you can move in it as if you were wearing nothing at all). I use restoration because...why wouldn't you? I find this to be an incredibly powerful build, and I have so much fun with it. There's nothing more satisfying than taking down a dragon (or any ridiculously huge creature, for that matter) with a knife.

The Slow Time Dragon Shout makes a huge difference in my effectiveness as well (of course), and the Whirlwind Sprint can occasionally teleport me out of harm's way for long enough to regain my composure. The rest of the shouts I could do without, but I really depend on those two to make the game ridiculously easy.

I know I will be making alts in the future, but I'm fairly sure that this will continue to be my favorite (unless perks in other skills can really change my mind). I suggest this to anyone who's looking for a highly effective build.

I really tried using a spell and shield (as that was my original character concept), because I figured that I'd be able to block incoming attacks while waiting for my magicka to recharge, but it really didn't work enough to warrant it at low levels. I got totally destroyed (moreso than with any other setup), though I could definitely see it being effective at later levels.

I'm using what I call my Green Lantern build. Max out Conjuration, then play it like a melee class, but using conjured armour, weapons and wards.

Rather brilliant because all my gear then scales with my stats, not with the weapon stats.

Plus, being able to throw 2 atronachs at any problem is rather good too.

The only Daedric Heart I've yet to find was given to me when I upgraded my house in Whiterun to include the Alchemy table. If you really need one, that's the only way I know how to find one.

I suppose you could mess around with conjuration and kill your summons, though I'm not sure you can loot them this time around.

I'm fairly sure that the Slow Time shout is given to you for completing Shimmermist Cave, which is West/Northwest of Whiterun, about a half a screen's length (on the map, anyway) from the town. Don't quote me on that though; I'm not completely sure, and the locations of the shouts may change based on the Radiant Quest system. It's still definitely worth checking out, though you'll have to do battle with a gigantic Dwemer Construct at the end of the dungeon to be able to obtain the shout. You shouldn't have any trouble with it at level 30, but the cave may scale to your level (again, I'm not sure).

I hope it's there, as Slow Time is definitely one of the most helpful shouts in the game if you depend on melee (or even bows or ranged magic) whatsoever.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/15 13:14:45

Post by: Soladrin

Scaling doesn't apply to enemy gear anymore, just mob levels. I'm now facing bandit mages who can 3 shot me with fireballs. Though they die from 1 axe to the face.

Also, I found a great way of hunting dragons/finding shout. Go to all Inns, keep using the " any work" option. You keep getting bounties, first kill bandit leader, then giant, then dragon(almost) always located at a dragon shrine thingy. I've completed almost all inns this way now.

Have yet to step into any dwemer dungeons so no clue how I'll do there.

Shimmermist Cave isn't actually a Dwemer ruin, it's just infested with Faenir (I'm pretty sure that's their name anyway; the ugly fethers that look like Nosferatu). They just so happened to come across a Dwemer Construct (and somehow figured out how to control it), and you have to fight it to unlock the Word Wall.

I was doing sword/healing for a while, but I've since switched to sword/dagger. I use the dagger for backstabs and the sword for normal fighting. I think I'm about half way through the main quest line and I was able to get the Blades sword hanging on a wall at the inn in.... i dunno, wherever you meet that lady after the horn quest. The sword is great, it's like a big katana and I enchanted it with +5 frost damage. I should have tried to sharpen it first, now I can't because I don't have the perk to work on enchanted weapons, and I don't plan to get it.

Other than the rested bonus, what do you get from marrying someone? Can you marry more than 1 and have a house in each city? Or does it matter who you marry, like one person might have some kind of bonus over another?

I'm doing both the dark bros and thieves guild stuff right now, gonna take a break from the main quest for a while and do all my other quests.

I am actually thinking about rerolling to a melee/magick char. Bow started getting really boring last night... Just seems not to scale as well as melee. Only level 17 (translates to about 58 bow and 50ish sneak and all the perks I can got thrown into maximizing bow).

I want a thief type char for sure. I wish you could sneak attack with magick.

You could go bow with a sword/dagger set for when things get hairy, that would be quite thief-ish.

Have you tried using potions btw? Alchemy looks to be a big part of successful thief play.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/15 18:51:12

Post by: osumicrobio

I have messed around with alchemy quite a bit, but probably nothing crazy extensive. I am still in the "Mad Scientist" phase where I am trying to find as many recipes as possible.

I also muffed up a few things along the way. I didn't even think to level BSing like you would in, excuse the curse word, World of Warcraft.

This game is so gigantic, I feel like the 20 hours I have put in is barely scratching the surface (killed my 2nd dragon last night :-X).

I definitely underestimated how useful crafting is though...

Post by: Necros

That's pretty much what I do.. bow, plus sword & dagger.

I think it scales good enough. Sword and dagger hit harder, but the bad guy is also in my face trying to kill me. Arrows are for sniping and being extra sneaky.

I use poisons a lot, I don't really have any alchemy perks except the very first one though. But, I wish there was a quicker/easier way to apply your poison instead of having to open up a menu each time.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/15 18:54:07

Post by: osumicrobio

Can you quick bar poisons?

Or will they not apply themselves to what you're wielding if you hit that hotkey?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/15 18:57:29

Post by: thenoobbomb

Yup, get the amulet, then wear it, talk to the person you want to mary, and if he/she likes you enough, they will ask you about it. If you say yes, you need to go to the alter in Riften, and thou can marry

Wait.. Wabbajack back? And lusty argonian maid too? This is awsome.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/15 18:59:01

Post by: Necros

For the PC there's probably a hot key to make it easier, but on the PS3 I at least have to open up my favorite menu, and since I craft my own poisons and they all have varying strengths even if the potion has the same name, I have to Favoritize like 10 different pots, so it's easier to use the main item menu instead.

Really, get slow time with bow zoom and you can lean around corners and head-1shot pretty much anyone that isnt a miniboss or higher.
stack up +bow damage items, buy every one you can, enchant the peices you haven't bought yet.

I'm at ~50 bow damage base right now and simply blow away just about anything I see with one sneak crit.

When I was 18 we didn't have MMORPGs or RPGs, we had ball in a cup. But in all seriousness I can legally drink in the United States and I remember playing Conker's Bad Fur day when I was about 10 or so.

But I got BF3 for myself and I got Skyrim on the PS3 for my bro and his girl, but I got a $20 gift card for each game. So I have $40 and I get 10% off, looks like I'll be getting it on PC for only $15.

On a side note, got married, however didn't own a house at the time, neither did she (student at the Mages college) and it seems she has vanished.. still investigating, but not seen her at my new home, or back at the college since we wed.

My houseguard has turned up at the new house mind, which I thought was a nice touch.

This game is soul-suckingly good... :(

My dad heard me ranting about the game to some friends. He didn't hear the rant, only heard the name, and my "excitement." He also saw a commercial for it on TV over the weekend... Guess who has an unexpected copy of Skyrim? Guess who is eating his words about hating the combat system? It could still be improved imo, but its far better than my experiences with Morrowind and Oblivion... Or it might just be that I'm a console player, and so I'm used to it (unlike my GotY editions of TES 3 & 4)

I still haven't quite figured out what I want to do yet with my Nord... right now he's quite good at destruction spells, one handed weapons (axes), and heavy armor...

Hasn't been detrimental yet... I have an Iron Helm of Magicka on atm, and I haven't noticed anything off except that I'm not wearing robes that speed up my regen, so if anything it balances out. My magic takes a little longer to regen, but I'm handy with an axe and shield, so its not like I'm gonna die...

Unless it's a blood dragon, not only are they the strongest, they have such a keen nose that they seem to sniff you out whenever you run out of healing potions.

I don't even want to think of what it takes to kill a Giant... I had to cheat my way past the quest you pick up from Skjor...

Went to the sleeping tree camp, walked into the cave, summoned a fire atronach (which used up 90% of my magicka), popped a brief invis potion, grabbed the sword and booked it back to town...

That's the one thing about the Elder Scrolls, you can skip the main quest entirely and complete about 50% of the game. It just takes so long to do everything.

I did the main quest up until the graybeard stuff and the 1 or 2 after where you go with some girl to see a dragon and then kill it. The graybeard stuff is worth doing just because of all the shouts you get, and the full unrelenting force shout comes in real handy. And it's so much fun to use it to throw bad guys off a cliff.

I pretty much just have every quest (misc and normal) set to active, so my map is loaded up with markers. I just run off and do whatever is closest to me, go turn it in and then go do whatever is near the turn in place, and just keep exploring and picking up new quests.

This game is simpy and utterly, mind-bendingly awesome. Coming from the days of an Atari 2600 and Spectrum 48k, I can safely say that some of the experiences I have had in this game are up there in my 'top 3' of steps forward by gaming as a form of entertainment. 1 was Mario 64, and that opening level when you first experienced the wonder of a 3D environment, 2nd was Mass Effect, and I think the moment games became a legitimate and mature experience for adults (not just gore or sex, but as a storytelling medium) and now Skyrim.

Without giving anything away to the overall plot (although this is a tiny bit of a spoiler, for those who want everything in the game to be virgin-fresh) I have just played a bloody amazing section which I just have to recount.

Picture the scene: my Ork warrior, equipped with hand axe, shield and heavy armour, is involved in a Highlander-esque fight for the freedom of the Nords. Attacking an Imperial town, you are part of a mass of AI controlled warriors and other characters who are charging towards the town. Catapult bombs are flying overhead, farmers and plebians run screaming in front of you as the horde of soldiers cry out, all the time the smoke shrouded walls of the castle in front. Arrows (with the perfect sound effect) come thudding down, the screams of your colleagues as they get hit by them. I charge forward and cut down a couple of cowering Imperials, a backhander for one, and then it cuts to a cut scene as I plant my axe in the head of another and kick the body loose (this game is bloody - there is still blood spatter on the screen and on the axe as I continue forward). The commander of the attack calls that the ropes of the drawbridge need cutting for the army to gain entrance, so heroically I head for the rampart to one side that gains access, dispatching another Imperial on route. This one is a more difficult opponent, with armour and a tower shield. He swings at me and I block with my own shield, and use a counter ('shield bash') to the face that throws him off guard, allowing me to put several solid axe hits on him that smash him to the ground (if you have Dolby or a good pair of headphones the sound will leave you cringing! - I swear the sound people must have actually got some meat and got a weight-lifter to hammer it with an axe ) I charge up the stairs and face along the top wall where the ropes which hold the drawbridge are located. Two guards turn to face me as I run towards them and aim with bows. I'm probably not going to reach them before they fire, so I roar with my 'voice' (for anyone who doesn't know, play the game and you will understand) - a massive torrent of energy hits the guards, picks them up and hurls from the edge of the battlements. I run forward to the drawbridge lever, but as I reach it I see several guards down below turn to fire at me. I raise my shield, and am pushed back as they thunk into it but I'm unhurt. As they reload I hit the lever and the drawbridge falls to a cheer of the attacking army - they charge inside the castle, the archers try to let loose more arrows but are quickly swamped and brought down. The gates of the keep are in front of me, and after surveying the battle for a moment I run back to join the fight! ...

If you don't already have this game, I just can't recommend it enough. The attention to detail is truly staggering - the way characters carry on with their usual business as you talk to them, deer run from you as you move through the undergrowth, salmon jumping out of a river while a bear stands in the water trying to eat them. The way all the stories link into each other, and do so seemlessly. I think this game represents a labour of love by it's creators, and in terms of narrative and experience I can't ever remember getting so pulled into a game. Simply stunning, the closer you look the more things you see. I could never imagine when I was a kid that games would one day be like this.

I agree.. usually when I buy a game I really love, it sucks me in but I'm still able to function and perform normal household tasks as they arise. Not anymore.

One of my favorite moments was wandering around some village chatting up people, asking everyone what they thought about dragons. After the 4th or 5th person, his response is something like "My father keeps saying we need to be careful, but I don't think dragons exist. They've been extinct for centuries, in fact--" and that was when a dragon landed right behind him, snatched him up, chewed him up, and spit him out. Then it proceeded to kill every last person in town, except for me, since I ran like a baby.

I doubt it, oblivion had a good lore excuse because the boundaries of oblivion had been damaged when sheogorath created the gateway to the shivering isles but skyrim has nothing of the sort.

Perhaps a huge underground dwemer plain?

So, I've never found the various types of Trolls to be a problem,

Spoiler:
but Dragon Priests...

Fast, close to unstaggerable, big magic, resistant to magic, summon pets. They make me cry.

I remember at level 7 killing a dragon that was sleeping quite happily on top of a mountain, then after the fight seeing a nice Word Wall. I ran to it, a coffin outside opened and bam. Dragon Priest Krosis "initiated" me to fiery death. I killed him long after at level 13 and took his staff, which is now my favourite babysitting device.

I've never faced a Dragon Priest. The fact I rely on Stealth attacks to level the playing field early on will probably be my downfall unless I can throw Lydia at it early.

The problem was back then I was a wussy mage who was used to dual firebolting everything.

Now though... it's dual fireballing everything!

So far I've killed two of them, the mask of one allowing me to look like the original wearer of this garment:

They'd have to do it differently from Fable 3, that system was grossly overpowered when you got the paralysis of lightning coupled with the damage of fire, the paralysis lasting long enough to do another aoe blast and re-paralyse.

Obviously sparks don't paralyse here, but it could get overpowered very easily is what i'm saying.

The balance would be similar to how dual wielding any spell is balanced, increased power for increased vulnerability and decreased close range power.

Okay so I totally had a blast playing this game tonight. I had just finished a six pack of beer when I met this guy named Sam in a bar in Riften. I had a pretty good buzz, so the drinking game proposed by the NPC Sam sounded pretty cool. After I won, my character blacked out and my character sort of had a morning like what was in the movie "The Hangover". I was in a all girl temple and I was accused of drinking their wine and fondling their statues... I had to clean up my mess which oddly contained a severed Giant's toe. I asked the priestess about the temple and she said the elder women were in prayer or something. So I lock picked their inner sanctum and then I was caught when I busted in on their little prayer meeting. I was told to fetch some girl who has a connection to their goddess as an alternative to a death penalty.

I will not spoil it all, but I must confess, this quest seemed really cool since I was actually drinking myself...

More when I actually lose my buzz and finish the quest.

Armor skill experience is based on how much damage you get, so that's not useful at all

I am kinda hurt they didn't take the best part of F:NV and add it to Skyrim.

Hardcore Mode.

I loved having to eat and sleep on a fairly regular basis. Sure I can do it in skyrim (and do), but it's harder to keep track of, so my character eats at 6am noon and 6pm to keep things simple, goes to bed (if near a bed) at 10 (after an hour of talking in the pub if in a city) wakes up at 4:30, brisk jog and light spellcasting exercises in the city(spell casting outside city walls to not hit NPCs) and eats at 6AM.

When I have to travel, I take about a weeks worth of food with me and ample amounts of drink.

What I eat is based on what I can afford after potions, new armor, and Magic training (because Restoration still sucks to level. >.< )

No clue, never used any.

I'm pissed about something though, be it bug or not. The elemental fury shout (raises attack speed) doesn't work with enchanted weapons, what's that about?

Forged me Deadric mace and war axe though. Now it's time to raise enchanting to 100%, so I can get maximum smithing bonus on my smithing gear and buy some smithing potions, and then create the fattest armor and weapons possible.

My current dragonplate armor has 200ish armor rating.

I have been told the Daedric Weapons are pretty awesome. I was pretty upset that there were no Dragon Weapons when I got there. Is it worth it to get Daedric and Dragon? Wow. Never played Oblivion, but Dang, Skyrim is a blast!

Lost my self in making armor for about 3 hours and laughed at my self for "working" in a game and not realizing it.

I have beaten 4 dragons and, not including the first one, I have had something / someone fighting me at the same time. Saber cat, a bear and an assassin. <- yes I ticked someone off, can you ever find out who? Just asking.

Gotta Say it again, I'm loving this game. Only lvl 14 and I just came off the mount after talking with the monks.

Question, why am I always "not looking well"? How can you tell you have been posioned?

Not sure if anyone posted, but these made me lol.

I think there's a bug where it only recognises an equipped weapon for poison purposes if it's in a certain hand (the right IIRC). Try switching hands.

The quest with Sam and the drinking game ends with a really nice reward, it's a long one but it's fun.

Sometimes if people are telling you that you look sick it might just mean that you haven't slept in weeks.

And for poisoning weapons, you should just need to equip it, then select the poison you want to apply. I do a lot of alchemy but I rarely use my poisons just because I hate having to open up the menu every time, and I rarely notice any kind of difference in how the fight went if I poison my weapons or not. So now I just make em and sell em. I prefer enchanting actually, then at least you can see people catch on fire when you hit em.

Well, left side is light armor, right side is heavy. Dragon can be made as scale and plate, so both light and heavy.

It's lighter then deadric armor with similar stats for the heavy, wouldn't know about the light variant.

The weapons are awesome, my mace does 65 and my axe 63 right now (with lvl 5 one handed perk giving me +100%)

hmm.. now I'm wondering about smithing... I thought dragon stuff was just for heavy armor. Is dragon armor the bestest you can get? Or are there other things in the game that's better, that you can find as loot or on quests? I really don't want to dump the perks into smithing because I feel like I need them for my regular fighting skills. But I have a whole lot of dragon bone bitz in my house that I've been saving... And also as a sneaky type I've been just using a mix of the theives guild and dark brotherhood armors and it's been working well enough for now

IMO smithing only works if you go full on crafting.

Right now I'm maxing out enchanting so I can get a full set of +% enchanting, with those, I'll enchant a full set of +% better items from smithing, drink a potion of +% smithing, and then make the bestest armor and weapons ever. And then switch back to enchant gear to maximize damage boosts on said items. I wanna see if I can get too 1000 armor without even using a shield.

Smithing is a good skill for early play though, I was running around in full Orc gear before level 10. No way of getting it that early otherwise, same for weapons.

I make some decent cash selling potions, just harvest everything you can and keep all your ingredients, make potions with em and then sell them to the shop keepers. And also being a rogue type I'll steal anything of value that isn't nailed down and pickpocket almost everyone I meet before I say hello. You can steal stuff from shop keepers, then turn around and sell it back to them

Also the dark brotherhood and the thieves guild quests all pay pretty good.

Found my wife.. she was right where I left her. Well ish, seems she bugged when we got married, I saw her walk out of the temple and vanish, assumed she walked home.
Going back a couple of days later, she was waiting by the door inside of the temple with the 'do we live at your place or mine?' question.

On a side note, I truly love the generator for encounters, had some classics so far, one of my faves was as I was giving a guy bak his gloves a rogue knicked off him, three bandits where coming along, and one of them backstabbed him in front of me. So after sorting them out, I got the item and a load of stuff.
Also of the five Dragons I've killed so far, all have turned up while I was surrounded by potential allies. Three times at the Mages school (although bizarrely on the last fight two mages in the courtyard ignored it, even after getting hit, just ran about, so had to kill that one myself.)
The other times was the first one with Guards at Whitehold, and one attacked me at the Gates of Riften, when the Kahjit caravan was there, so all of them, two guards and I burned it down fast.

Level twelve now, really glad I got this last minute, best game I've played this year.

On a final note, have people noticed if a companion dies, and you take their house key, the game seems to count the house as yours. None of the stuff in the house has a steal tag on it, and the bed is sleepable.

Post by: Necros

Yeah I just figured that out for myself last night.. I stole a whole bunch of iron from a blacksmith shop, then went outside and made a whole bunch of daggers and raised my skill like 8 points, then sold the daggers to the guy I stole the ore from For some reason I get a real kick out of stealing from people and then selling them what I just stole

I think I'll just raise smithing to get the perk to let me improve magic items.. that's all I really need it for. Dragon armor would be fun I guess, but I'd rather save the rest of my perk points for combat & roguey skills.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/17 20:01:27

Post by: Anvildude

One of the interesting things about the economy is that it actually values work time. So when you steal the ore and sell back daggers, it's not exactly 'getting money for nothing', since you're basically acting as the cobbler's elves, doing the smith's work for them in the dead of night.

And does the quality of crafted gear go up when your Smithing skillis higher? So an Iron Dagger I make at Smithing 10 will be worse than an Iron Dagger I make with Smithing 50?

Done for good afaik. I have (rather tediously) restarted some save games to keep her alive.

Damnit, I can't be bothered going back to the point she died, I regret using her as a flank shield now to hide behind and stab from.

Are there no rez spells in the game?

Im only early in so not sure, there may well be.
But is her body still where she died?

It was when I left her.

I'm only early on too, just killed bandit leader (she died there) and now going to the top of the mountain to see greybeards

Exactly where she died for me too, hehe.

Nope, literally half way up the mountain to the Greybeards.
My dam horse despawned for some strange reason so Im footslogging. Its one very big mountan.

check around the area, I've had that happen (paying on Xbox incase your the same) and found it ni the area closeby. Learnt this after a foot fight here it vanished and I had to go looking and eventually found it on top of a hill nearby watching... I swear that horse tries my patience but I need it for travel times.

Also make sure you aren't going the wrong way like I did, seems my last 2 attempts i've ben going up to a dead end.

God dont say that, the route Im on has little stone piles with flags on them, I assume they are a guide? Also large steps dug into the ground (half covered in snow) and several yetis on the way up so far.
Sound about right?

Think you found the correct route, I wondered off a few times when talking to others then fell off the mounain. But I thin you're on the right path now.

People actually use horses? I just use my travel form.. (werewolf). It helps that I've already found 150+ locations I guess...

Anyway, anyone found this games uber vendor yet? I need some vendor with actual cash in his pocket.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 11:43:20

If its like Morrowind just wait 24hrs and vendor cash will refresh.
Highest I've seen so far is 3k. Not a lot mind but if the 24hr trick works it can add up nicely.

It's 48 hours.

Highest I've had is 30ish K, a trip to 2 trainers put me back to less then 1k

Question for those more familiar with the game than me. I just got myself a horse and I was wondering - can I at any point make attacks whilst riding it? Or will I always have to get off?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 12:37:58

Post by: Soladrin

Have to get off AFAIK. It's why I don't bother with it.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 12:41:18

Post by: htj

Oh nuts. It feels kinda of odd riding up to combat then getting off. "Wait, wait, guys. I've just got to get off my horse. OK-- go!" Still, I'm having fun just riding around on it, so there's that.

EDIT: Bizarre rhyming spelling mistake.

The horse is more trouble than it's worth. You can steal one for a bounty you could pay off with buttons and a half-sucked sweet, but I suppose that's only because they're absolute crap. You get off, and it has the ability to fly across the road and land somewhere obscure, they also jump late, so you have to learn to time the jump a second or two after your press the spacebar. The movement is also pants.

I honestly think it's faster on foot considering all the mounting/dismounting, finding my horse again, trying to face him in the right direction...

Post by: Chrysaor686

No, there is no mounted combat in the game.

There might be a mod later, but I understand why they didn't put it in. The game would completely lose it's balance if you could strike enemies from a horse.

I don't mind the horses so much, they can sprint for long durations (I've never actually ran out of stamina on a horse) and they seem to be better at rock climbing than you are.

Wait what?! A horse better at climbing rocks then a humanoid? Your joking right?

I bought a horse for 1000 gold and thought it would be cool.. he was fun to ride around on, but that was about it. I got off him to enter a dungeon, and then never saw him again.

There's some quest lines where you get a horse to ride like
Spoiler:
Astid's horse Shadowmere from the Dark Brotherhood
.

Right now I'm still riding that one, dunno if he's mine forever. But what I do now is when I fast travel I'll get on the horse first, thinking maybe it will take less game-time to get to where I'm going.

Also for the 7 billion steps, all I ran into was an ice troll and an ice wraith or something like that.. and a bear or 2. And a couple of NPCs. Just remember to save often, if anything so you don't have to run all the way back when you get too close to the edge to admire the scenery and fall off the mountain and the only way back is to start over at the bottom, like me.

You can get a free horse from a Stormcloack camp just north of the Graybeard hold on the main map - note it is not on the mountain, it is on the north side of its slope south of the ritual stone that is there.
There are two horses there and you can ride either without stealing or having to pay.

Did you try porting back to a city Necros, your horse should respawn at the entrance, Riverwood is a good one to try.

Can you own multiple horses? And can your companions ride said multiples?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 15:17:51

Post by: Necros

Yeah that one that I bought is just gone. Maybe something ate it while I was gone, who knows. But the free one I got from the quests has been working great, he's always there waiting for me. I also found another Thieve's Guild side quest where I think you can get a horse or give it to the guy a the end, but I chose to be nice and let him have his horse since I had the other one anyway.

Lately though I've just been wandering around on foot just exploring and stuff. I've been thinking about just taking a super long walk from one corner of the map to the other and just see what I can discover along the way.

Not sure about owning mutliples htj but your companions cant ride, which is kinda annoying, hopefully it'll get modded at some stage.

I like your playstyle Necros, several guys I know are ploughing military style through the game or have strategic areas they focus on and then complete and move on.

To each his own I guess but taking it easy and exploring, "going over that next hill" was always the appeal to the Scrolls games for me.

At first I was going to just go to each town and do all of the quests, then move to the next town. But, it's usually just the first couple of quests that are close and the rest are far away. So, now I just have every quest marker showing on the map, and when I get to an area I do everything nearby, then turn those in and pick up more. I'm 1 or 2 away from finishing the dark brotherhood though so I'm gonna finish that up tonight.

Big tip for all heavy armor users, Dragonplate is not the best, Deadric actually has higher armor rating. Just found this out, much to my annoyance, good thing I haven't used my deadric hearts yet I guess.

Is heavy armour a must for close combat? Or can you get by with light?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 17:25:15

Post by: Necros

Being the sneaky type I'm always in light armor, and I do fine in melee now that I've got the skill over 40 or so. I haven't gone against anything super uber though aside from dragons and I do OK against them. It's magic that hurts me the most.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim @ 2011/11/18 17:25:27

Post by: Nerivant

You can get by with light.

My CC Theif-type did fine against dragons.

I'll echo that magic is the most dangerous thing. In my opinion, resist cold/fire/shock are the best enchantments.

He's an interesting fella. You can get jester cloths like his a little later if you keep doing the DB quests. I have a full suit, I wish I could have a little mannequin standee thing in my house to hold suits of armor, or force Lydia to wear it.

Has anyone had much experience with Destro/Conjuration Wizards in Heavy Armour? Mine seems to be doing fine (even if Conjuration is a bastard to level; can't wait until I can summon Frosty without eating 3/4 of my magicka in the process, even if I don't end up using a lot of it afterwards) but i'm wondering if i'll head into any trouble later on, like magic nerfs due to wearing armour instead of clothes.

Dragonplate helm look like the witchkings helm merged with the canon dovahkiin iron helm, it is awesome

Post by: Anvildude

Haven't done that yet, but planning on making a Heavy Sorcerer type soon. Have you taken the 'half Magicka cost' perks for Conjuration yet? those and %reduction cost enchantments are rather sweet. I got a level 10 who can fire off dual Lightning Bolts like they were party streamers right now.

Speaking of which, is there any way to create your own spells, or are you stuck with pre-made ones. Similarly, is there a range limit on non DoT spells?
