Did you add gamemode=0 to your sever properies file? This specifies survival mode over creative mode and I don't know what the game defaults to.
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Server.properties Also do you have a backup of your world from 1.7.3 or is this a new world created fresh in 1.8 that is entirely ocean? If you have a backup from 1.7.3, try running that through 1.8pre2, perhaps 1.8pre1 corrupted it?
mondo80 wrote:Dark, were the 1.8 videos done on the live server or copy??
The videos I recorded using a copy of the Dakka world on my own test server. I will still have to test the full release of 1.8 on the live server before we go forward with the upgrade. If anyone wants me to test or try anything else on my test server, I can try it out this evening.
darkinnit wrote:

It was a new server that I started when the 1.8 pre-release was released, and yeah the game mode is set to 0. Animal Spawn is set to =true as well, but we havent seen an animal as of yet. Im guessing its just a bugged biome, and the only way to fix is to either:
a) restart the server
or
b) man up and take survival mode to a whole new level
Only bug I've found so far is that when you try to shift-click an item into an Inventory or Chest that is already full, the game crashes. Seems alright besides that.
Go to the bottom of page 200. The Dakka world seems fully compatible with 1.8pre2, although I will do more testing with 1.8 (final).
We won't need a reset.
Still up in the air for a reset for the official release in November though. If we do a reset, I will copy across structures, but we can discuss that closer to the time.
1.8 is pre-compatible. Just tested it with my mass-base world. Minor warpage with ravines etc appearing in the middle of nowhere (one of my roads got cut) but other than that.
Creative mode is kinda still buggy, you can actually exit to the void....which is bad.
There seems to be a few bugs with my version. For instance, I don't have any food bar, and can't get any chicken or beef meat. I can't craft doors either apparently.
And are endermen supposed to make the sounds of zombies?
Crrently 1.8 is unplayable for me, i keep gettin the "Out of memory". Yet I cant do anything about it because of my 32-bit system. Even since I formatted my comp its been hell tryin to play Minecraft.
I did have a 64-bit system installed but for w/e reason I now have a Windows 7 32-bit back up disk :/
n0t_u wrote:Edit: Endermen are definitely annoying, ran up to one with a sword and it vanished for about 10 seconds before reappearing behind me...
Actually, they're not that hard to kill. A bit stressing when they teleport away and reappear out of sight, but they're not too dangerous. They also drop "ender pearls" or something like that. I wonder what you can do with it.
darkinnit wrote:Sounds like you started in "creative" mode rather than survival mode.
Nope, I did start in SSP.
I simply deleted the bin folder and got rid of all the mods and texture packs I had and downloaded 1.8 again. It works fine now.
I saw something weird on my new 1.8 map, a skely was shooting at me and hit a zombie, then the zombie attacked the skely. the skely died ant then I finished off the zombie with my axe.
mondo80 wrote:I saw something weird on my new 1.8 map, a skely was shooting at me and hit a zombie, then the zombie attacked the skely. the skely died ant then I finished off the zombie with my axe.
that's normal. When a skeleton shoots another hostile mob, the mob attacks it. That's one way of getting a old disc- getting a skeleton to kill a creeper.
Deathklaat wrote:anyone having issues connecting to the server? i did not update and i cannot join the server.
It's been fairly dodgy recently. My minecraft lagged out and then froze on the black screen of death upon attempting to reconnect. I also cannot change skin or go onto minecraft.net via the favorites link on my toolbar.
I tested 1.8 some more on a backup of the Dakka world again last night. Land is generated correctly and apart from sheer cliffs at the boundary and the 1 block drop in ocean level, it's all fine. When a large ocean biome is generated, they can be around 2000 blocks wide (that's about the same size as the current map of the Dakka world! - but not as big as the Dakka world itself of course) and sometimes even larger if two ocean biomes join up. But there is land at the other end, it is not an infinite ocean.
I also saw villages, abandoned mines, canyons and rivers being generated on the Dakka world so it definitely is all working fine.
There is also one negative or positive bug (depending on your viewpoint). The Endermen do not attack if you look at them and then look away. This seems to be a SMP bug only, but is not a major one, just makes the Endermen less scary. They still attack and chase you if you hurt them though.
However, if an Endermen picks up a block, it is not dropped when they are killed. So if an Enderman picks up a precious blue wool, iron or diamond block etc, you've pretty much lost it. I've not seen an Enderman place a block down again yet, but haven't really had the patience to hang about waiting. This sounds annoying, but I don't think it will be more of an issue than creepers blowing up your stuff, at least it's only one block this time, and the chance of them choosing one of the thousands of dirt blocks instead is much higher.
notch wrote:Minecraft 1.8.1 is up, fixing a shift click bug!
If this fix stops the game crashing when you overfill a chest or your inventory, then I might, *might*, update the server this evening.
Clouds are now at the invisible ceiling rather than below it and cutting through the floor of whatever tall building may be there. Though I think it would have just been better if they gave servers the option to change the height of the clouds in a config file.
mondo80 wrote:I saw something weird on my new 1.8 map, a skely was shooting at me and hit a zombie, then the zombie attacked the skely. the skely died ant then I finished off the zombie with my axe.
Found a village at my spawn in my new world (wanted to see how the "Dakka" seed had changed). Kind of sucks how there are no NPCs in them, but after the first night wouldn't blame them. This is basically the back yard of the house I claimed.
On the other side of the house was another Ender and two creepers.
Don't you realize? Those villages are built by the Endermen! They're ancient biological building devices, pre-programmed with specific instructions for paths, blacksmith shops, and houses. The rest of the Minecraftia civilization died out centuries ago to a zombie plague, and these 'Ender-men' (named so because they were meant to 'end' manual labor) continued with their pre-programmed duties. However, over the centuries, the biological code has deteriorated a bit. If they are interrupted in their work (looking at them interrupts them, because that was their signal to stop for new instructions) they go berserk, and attempt to 'remove the obstacle' keeping them from doing their job.
I have one question for you guys: What's that giant, floating white ball supposed to be?
I've been reading this thread to learn more about the game, and I came across the world map....and noticed the giant ball...Is it just a huge decoration or is it a floating home/evil lair?
The giant ball near the sanctuary? If it's the one I think it is it's a sun Lego made out of glowstone. No idea if it actually has a house in it as an OP could quite easily have a house like that using the teleport command.
Edit: Night two
Ender Pearls could probably be used as currency I guess since we don't really seem to have one on the Dakka server and they kind of look nice.

The small yellow ball is Lego's sun, the giant floating white ball is Biccat's evil lair (don't know if it's actually evil). I actually walk past it 3 mins into this video, but my computer was acting up and it didn't get fully loaded/rendered so you can only see a few small bits of it there.

I need to test 1.8 on the live server before I let you all connect (make sure chests and inventory don't crash it and that the world generation still works correctly on the live server's slightly different setup), and I can't play Minecraft at work...
Assuming everything is ok, I'd say in about 3 hours time perhaps?

Had a few days with not much more than a lot of skeletons and zombies. Being bored I removed all light sources in the village besides my house.
Then the Enders showed up with a bunch of creepers, spawning in the top floor of the church and leveling it.
Spoiler:
Also Enders seem to be annoying if they remember they can teleport multiple times. One I was fighting would warp away before my sword would hit it and kept darting around the place before I filled it with arrows.
Creepers are infinitely easier to kill now, just sprint, smack it with the sword of your choosing, and walk backwards, then repeat. the sprint smack knocks it back past its fuse range
Is anyone else having a problem with chests not appearing correctly?
Lighting isn't working right (the top is dark) and all of my chests have changed orientation (at least the chest image, apparently not the chests themselves)
I finished the rail line to Nether Reach, its a base in the nether at x-950 out. Take the line going to mondonia and keep going. The portal is on the edge of a swamp directly above a huge abandoned mine complex with a mine spider spawner. Got 2 ender pearls.
biccat wrote:Is anyone else having a problem with chests not appearing correctly?

it's just another tedious but not too bad glitch. When you click on old chests to "fix" them, they turn around.
one of my double chests that is in the floor runs the opening animation, but sometimes gets "stuck" in the wall and doesn't close.
biccat wrote:Is anyone else having a problem with chests not appearing correctly?

Yup, because of the new chest model and opening animation, existing chests from 1.7.3 can appear facing the wrong way and with little-to-no lighting. To fix the orientation and lighting at the same time, break and re-place the chest. If you just need to fix the lighting, either open the chest, or place a torch close to the chest (you can break the torch afterwards).

Seems I got it wrong, don't go replacing all those blocks just yet!
Logging on to a server during rain causes rain to fall through nearby blocks (ceilings indoors, for example) for the duration of the rainfall.
This is from the "Known bugs" list on the minecraftwiki.net. I think it implies that rain only comes through ceilings if you login while it is raining. And even then, once the rain stops it won't leak again next time it rains (unless you log off and then log in during rain again).

Just re-downloaded Minecraft last night and updated to 1.8 (Stupid Hard Drive...)
Mind=Blown.
I did have to laugh at one of the villages I found though - one of the houses spawned on a cliff, then the path just dropped off, and the rest of the village was at the base of it. I pictured some dumb NPC just falling to his death off the cliff because his pathing probably won't account for the fact that there's a huge drop of death in the middle of his town

You got those vertical cliffs before 1.8, and before 1.7; i've got a few on one of my older worlds that was made just after the nether was introduced (I remember this because I went mad with glowstone).
minecraft 1.8.1 is so cool but some things still need fixing such as when you open a chest the chest goes shaded black unfortunatily but hopefully 1.8.2 will soon be out. I'm not sure if im right but the enderman arnt doing 100% what they are supostaby doing but hopefully all things will be fixed in 1.8.2
Automatically Appended Next Post: What are you views on 1.8? Better or worse??
I looked straight at an enderman but he just went about his business like I wasn't there. Lag for me is terrible, I have to put my render on tiny! @Jedend1 to stop the chest going shaded black, place it then dig it up, place it again. Problem solved. The villages are creepy, kinda bland imo too.
Mineshafts are hellishly creepy, especially now F3 doesn't show mob tags. Getting lost in them is all too easy.
I also agree about the empty villages, but on SP the one I found had bits missing and bits blocking doors, right above a cavern system littered with mobs, so I just imagined that the citizens either stayed and locked themselves in, eventually dying of starvation, died fighting the mobs, or fled.
And the thing about the Endermen is that they don't quite work right on multiplayer servers. Something about the way Mobs target- in other words, the reason an Enderman won't go after you when you just look at it is ithe same reason you could push around a Creeper that's 'locked on' to another player.
I... Love... This... Map. It starts out Survival mode, but as usual, just copy the region folder and paste it in the folder for a new creative mode world if you want to build New York or something
I've found ~30 diamonds and I wasn't even trying for the first 20-25.
Pointless things if you ask me; all they're good for is a diamond pick for obsidian; everything else I can use the much more common stone and iron picks for, and stone for everything else like spades and axes.
I still havent found any of those villages i cn't wait to find one and the endermen are just freeky because i look at them, look away, then look back there gone, i look foward again and there right infront of me
the dock is being built now, but will require one hell of a lot of stone bricks (2x2 smoothstone in crafting). We've used maybe 10 stacks now, and the outline is very nearly done. I expect at least an inventory's worth is needed.
my boat has been de-watered, we have a smeltery and I've built a makeshift mini-dock leading to my room in the cliff face.
Also, may I ask fr a few things when building a house:
-please don't make it ugly or large.
-any underground homes, could you build a small house over the entrance.
-and just a request- could the houses look british-ish? (so no sandstone or all-log houses, mostly stone bricks or wood)
Sounds brilliant. Shrike, you will need to do something about the sewage problem. At the moment it hits the Dock, and no-one want's a smelly dock.
You could either route it down as a pipe to the ocean, or create a hole in the dock where it passes.
I can sort the Pipe Rerouting if that's what you choose.
Still haven't been able to figure out where the hell I am on that downloaded Earth map. I think I may have spawned in Mexico, but I'm not entirely sure. I've decided to just start building a city and then run Cartographer once it's big enough to be even remotely visible on even the closest zoom level. So far I've got the lobby and 3 storeys of a small hotel built. Will post pics later tonight.
I just fell into the grinder (near yesterdays explosion) and I was killed by a creeper at the bottom. I didn't see if the water stopped any block damage, and I don't know how to get back there, but I'll fix it if I can

That Earth map doesn't spawn at a set point unless you're playing the normal Survival map, in which you start out in Los Angeles. But I can't seem to think of a way to get a continuous track that I can loop around that will start via a control lever/button without adding in a piston and thus breaking the track at the end.
Any redstone experts mind giving me a hand with this?
Your typical minecart on power rails. Touch it and it goes zipping away. That's all well and good, but I want it to do that once I'm sitting in it, via a button I can hit or something.

have an unpowered rail on a downward slope, pointing where you wanna go. Mount a button on top, so it's still, you get in, hit the button, and you go.

Shrike's got it. Powered rails won't boost you unless you're already moving or you're against a wall, so starting on an incline lets gravity give you enough initial movement for the powered rails to kick in.
Yeah I am not going to build it so high I was going to build it out of the water to show how i wanted the full hull to look like but then I decided not too
To create a downward wake, build a block in the location then remove the block. Only works for water that's more than one block deep. To create an upward wake, place a water source block from the bucket in the appropriate place (you may need to build a structure to get the water in the right place).

For quick and temporary access to your ~/Library/ directory that still retains it’s default hidden nature, try one of the following three tips:
Use “Go To Folder” and Open ~/Library/ Directly
All you need to do is hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library to temporarily access the Library directory in the Finder. When you are done, close this window and it will no longer be visible.

Something like that though not as bad, maybe about half. That was also the thread I was reading trying to find a way to fix it; was hoping they'd despawn after a while.
Yeah they don't despawn, very annoying epsecially when they cause this much trouble and aren't even used for anything! At least it only affects clients in that chunk's vicinity and doesn't trouble the server very much.
Do you have the exact coords of where you died so I don't have to search too much? I just have a rough area of where you died.
I'm not sure, up on a small hill next to the well of three features (LoZ reference well ).
But, it seems there's a little time before the exp loads and the lag kicks up so I can probably get more exact co-ords if I reconnect when it dies since it thankfully doesn't effect the rest of the server.

and yet no-one thought to light up the surrounding area, or even the dock itself. I can't do anything about it because I'm 1000 blocks away down an abandoned mine, so can someone else take the liberty?
And can some other people take the liberty of not repiping the toilet drain into my bedroom, repairing any creeper explosions that expose the roof and right wall of my underground home to the outside world, not rip up the bed which several people were using to spawn from, not steal my iron helmet and boots, and not steal my chestplate and trousers, wear them down to red durability bar and replace them as if I won't notice.

Aleswell now has a portal on the overworld side, but I'll need some help making the nether side one. Once done it will be a lot faster to travel over that ocean.

melon is farming at the top of the mob spawner right now as a temporary measure to increase seeds
once i have 2-3 stacks of seeds i'll make an automated farm in the start area

Came across endermen unbuilding an npc village in a desert.
Heh, sorry I should have been clearer, I meant passive mobs (pigs, cows, sheep, chickens) spawn less in the desert, not hostiles.
You can also see it in the video I did testing 1.8 on the Dakka server. I make my way through the desert and only encounter some chicken just at the edge of it, then later (part 3 I think) I hit the plains and there's cows everywhere.
I think it might be a bug with SMP. When I walk around my single player world (and in several of the "Lets Play" channels) it's not difficult to find cows, sheep and pigs. They're pretty common, even in forest biomes.
However, on the dakka server even in areas that appear to be plains biomes (1.7 world), animals are pretty scarce. I suspect that there's a global limit to the number of mob spawns that needs to be fixed.

animals are persistant since 1.8 apparently and I believe there is a word limit on how many critters can exist, so this may be the case.
the spawn generator does still spawn pigs constantly though.

Bear in mind that the new 1.8 biome generation code will be changing the effects of the seed. Areas that used to be desert or plains in 1.7 might now be classed as something else, e.g. raining in deserts and snowing in places where it didn't snow before (when snow returns).
Only the 1.8 generated lands will accurrately match the terrain to biomes' effects - e.g. no rain in deserts.
It's true that animals are persistent now, but so were squids in 1.7 and there were plenty of them around, so it could just be that everyone is spread out with lots of land loaded at once. If the chunks are unloaded it should free up that allotment of animals. Other people have suggested checking at the bottom of waterfalls or streams for "trapped" animals and killing them to make new animals spawn.
1 player standing next to a mob spawners will probably cause animals to be scarce for players in other areas though...

The fog horn is about 1/2 the way down the coast.
The HQ building is coming along well.
The underwater viewing area is built.
The Lighthouse is done.
Lots of people are starting up houses there.
and yet no-one thought to light up the surrounding area, or even the dock itself.
As soon as I finish the base of my castle so its livable I'll gladly work on what needs doing in town. Just PM me or message me in game
I really didn't think I was holding that much experience. But anyway, glad you solved the problem. Shrike, have you been using Skype? I've created an account for it so we can talk while playing. Saintkicky should get it too, if he ever gets round to buying a microphone.
Servers down, been down for about 10 minutes or so.
Unrelated, but does anyone PvP? Because My roomate and I are in the process of making a server, and we need players both in and outside of Dakka. Looking to launch in November. It's like Nations at War, but with a few extra surprises.
Inquisitor Lord Bane wrote:Haggard. But anyway, what need doing in New Dakkatown? I'm willing to contribute to the place, as it's my most permanent home.
torches need to be scattered about.
the dock needs to be finished
and as a personal request from me, any darkwood that can be donated to me would be much appreciated.
Need to know where they are if you have so Dark can either replace them if it was due to a crash Also did you take 6 diamond from the chest at some point ?

6 diamond? no. Was that used to make the two picks? I can't remember. When I can actually get on I'll look around.
Nah I brought the 2 picks from my cathedral Mmm We've lost 6 Diamond, but no matter I've made up for it I found alot more today. And sure thing lad I think we're looking at clearing most of the explored places out and heading back
I was sick today and was sent home from work, so I played some minecraft. Spent all day mining until I finally got some diamond and obsidian, while walking back up my many lit ramps, guess what found it's way into my mine: A creeper. It explodes, all of my stuff falls into the bottom of the mine shaft, landing in lava. I think I am done with minecraft for a while.
It will? Got a source for that? I heard it was just bug fixes (including a fix for exp orbs), new nether mobs, new netherblocks and NPCs that do nothing.
Allegedly 1.9 is the "nether update." This adds in some stuff in the nether (Ruins) that will require new chunks to be generated and adds the "Mushroom" and "Snow" biomes.
The boundaries of Dakka will have to be pushed even further to find these areas.
The Snow *biomes* are already being generated in 1.8 as far as I am aware, it is just the actual snow that is missing. (i.e. you get pine trees in an area, but no snow or ice). I'm hoping it just means that in 1.9 it will start to snow in these areas.
The mushroom biomes have not been mentioned since the screenshot, but there's only one way to find out! :-)
Anyway, I'm glad we didn't make a whole new world just for 1.8. Aren't you?
However, a new world for the final release is looking more and more like a good idea if we start getting these "onion rings" or "tree rings" of sudden cliffs to new features in the world(s).
No point porting the world otherwise you'll still have the same problem. Not porting terrain, tunnels or roads.
I would copy structures and buildings to the new world as requested (I'll set up some request system closer to the time, don't start requesting now or flooding this thread - I will ignore them).
n0t_u wrote:Would be able to have a better sanc with the spawn point in it as well.
thats already been created, ive made a huge tree farm, mob farm, crop farm, super fast cobbler, and such with dark right next to the spawn area that you pass through to enter the server.

Can you give resources instead of buildings? As frankly, I'd rather just rebuild my buildings than have them there for me, waiting.
We can either copy across the current (or current at the time) start area, or take advantage of more space in the new world to make a better start area (no MCEdit).
MCEdit is very clumsy for building intricate things with and is mainly good for copy/paste/fill etc.
Also none of this will happen till November. Plenty of time to think about things, come up with ideas etc. What if they add a NPC start area to every map generated in 1.14 or something? Who knows what will happen :-)

much of it is now armored with bedrock too!
Didn't notice that when I was there before.
Me niether.
These two new nether mobs could be quite a problem. If they are hostile and spawn anywhere in the nether, using it for transport suddenly becomes much less viable.
Melissia wrote:Can you give resources instead of buildings? As frankly, I'd rather just rebuild my buildings than have them there for me, waiting.
Of course, if that is preferred, for those like yourself who would have used up the equivalent resources. i.e. relatively new people would get less or no resources.

Hurrah, now a warning before you mine a block and flood your mine. Hopefully there is something similar for lava too...
