I'd prefer a war server, two teams each with a base 1000 blocks apart and a no mans land in between. When ever there are 4 or more people on we duke it out in the battle area or run capture the flag type missions.
YES!! I'd love to do that! No protections, no benefits to one side or the other. Wanna go tear down their wall? You can try, just as long as nobody catches you, and as long as you watch out for the lava and piston traps!
Maybe not 1000 blocks away, more like 100, it would take up less room and make the battlefield closer. First we pick a spot on the server, mark it with fences then prepare the sites for the bases, battleground with trenches, some traps and a portal. Each base would need to have a list of team players and beds for spawn points. Free for all looting in the zone would be encouraged.
Could make a castle for it and a smaller outpost nearby. Teams rotate between attacker and defender. Defender getting the castle of course. Then have some "relic" (probably coloured wool) in the castle for the defenders to defend. Attackers need to rush in, grab it and place it back at the outpost.
Would likely save on space as well due to only needing one large structure.
I'm all for the idea however it turns out though. Perimeter with the fence needs a bunch of warning signs as well though. I'd probably help build a spectator stand for it as well.

You could do what my current server does and have 8 blocks of glowstone in a 2x2 block that the attackers have to destroy when all four are gone the attackers win and if the defenders hold out for the set amount of time they win.

This sounds like a fun idea.
guys, have none of you heard of the helm's deep castle defence I was gonna build?
I could start that up again, providing I have some help.
well, let's vote: castle vs small base or castle vs castle?
It'd have to be fairly small, though. I doubt we could get enough people to use two castles.
Lord_Typhon wrote:how big exactly would this version of helms deep be?
because i am beginning to wonder if 640 blocks of cobble stone will be enough...
it depends if we extend it into the rock or not. 640 blocks might do it, I'll go see how wide it'll be now.

heh. Well, I've kinda taken a break from the manor for a week or so, and you going on about castle warfare reminded me of an old unfinished project.
I agree with Mel. Once Minecraft has been fully released our server should be completely reset. Admittedly I haven't been on it long, and all I have to show for it is a small wooden shack on an island, but there *is* a lot of clutter on the server, and the only real way to deal with it is to start afresh. Besides, what better excuse for resetting than the release of the full version?
Anvildude wrote:I've got plenty of cobble from hollowing out the Mesa. I'll drop by the manor at around 7 Eastern time with it.
Ditto (well, not about the time, or dropping it off, or hollowing out a Mesa...)
Anyway, I've got 3 chests full of cobble if you want it. (mined through 2 diamond pickaxes and have only 1 diamond to show for it...not happy)
What level were you mining at to only find one diamond? And what sort of mining?
As far as I know, mining at level 9 with a tree root layout is the best way to find good stuff.

Just my 2 pence.
If we do restart I woud insist, and I think alot of others would support me, that we copy some, if not all of the old world in. But we would off-set it so the spawn would be in the new bit.
RaptorsTallon wrote:This allows you to see every block with minimum amount of blocks mined.
The problem with this system is that with the layout of blocks, you're overmining. Most ores appear in blocks of at least 2x2x2, even diamond (although it may be as few as 3 diamonds).
While the system I'm using only uncovers 50% (to your 75%) of blocks, because of the relative scarcity of blocks without ore-bearing neighbors, it's more efficient. Plus, if you wanted 100% coverage, you could move up or down to expose all of the blocks in a couple of layers:
I use the following system. It's not as efficient, but it's less claustrophobic:
Essentially a windmill pattern. Central room has the ladder up as well as storage, and is 4x3x4. The main side passages are 2x3x∞, while the mining passags are 1x3x∞. Usually the ground is the block at height 11. It's also difficult to get lost in, as you know that heading in, all the mining passages are on one side, and a flat wall is on th other, and it's not very claustrophobic because the main passages are very open and even the mining passages are three high.
I used to mine following a tree root layout with 1 block wide tunnels to optimize the area covered with each block mined.
However, I realized that the most efficient way to cover a great amount of blocks was simply to explore natural caves. This method has some inconvenient however, such as not really controlling the depth or the distance of the mining (since you're just following the cave), and it is less efficient than the tree root layout for mining diamonds.
But I prefer this method because it is far less boring and produces a far larger amount of resources.

Whats all this talk of resetting the server?
Pretty much with the 1.8 update theres been rumours of error with pre-gened worlds, as the generation code has been reworked(I think). This could cause problems with the server which could leave massive gaping holes in the ground and such.
That and other issues which im not fully aware of. Somebody else can build upon what i have said.
Their taking out the seed funtion, i think existing server will be ok. By the way i finished the tunnel and base area of Netherreach, a base in the nether 950 blocks from bwine portal, i will open its portal on 1.8

It is almost a certainty that the first release of 1.8 will have major bugs, as 1.7 had major bugs and that was just a small update, 1.8 will be a massive update and Mojang are quite reliant on their massive playerbase to find the bugs for them. I won't upgrade the server to 1.8 till at least several patches have been released. This should hopefully avoid any "gaping holes" and other world breaking bugs.
mondo80 wrote:Their taking out the seed funtion, i think existing server will be ok.
I haven't heard anything about them removing the seed function, but I do know that with oceans, rivers, new biomes, villages etc the seed function will be vastly different, so any requests like "please use this seed in the new world" will be completely pointless as it will not be the same result.
When we are going to make the transition to 1.8 I will probably load up the world in an admin-only mode and head to some new chunks to see if it's ok. If there are no gaping holes or oceans flooding onto exisiting landscape etc, then we'll probably just keep the existing world as-is. If you want the new 1.8 stuff, just put a bed in the new chunks and use that as your spawn point. There's no point offsetting the whole world when you can just use beds to change your spawn point. I'm sure someone would happily make an express minecart track in the nether...
If (and ONLY IF) there are major compatibility issues with the new world generation code, THEN I will consider creating a new world and importing existing requested structures - but not whole sections of the map - I'll just cut off tunnels, roads etc, as they can be easily rebuilt. It may not even be that simple if the World Editing tools are not updated to work with 1.8....
However, as I have already said, it may be better to wait till November, as we don't know if they will continue to make more massive changes and new features (Notch came up with rivers and deep oceans in a matter of days). Wiping out the world for 1.8 may be premature if they bring in another major new feature in 1.9 or 1.10.
Of course Lego and Yak can overrule anything I have to say, so take it all as it comes. :-)
So, this battle area, are we building it at helms deep?
If we are, we may have a problem. Biccats Northen Base is right next door, and could be in the way.
Obviously, we can't move Biccats hemi-sphere, but we could move the battle area.

What do we think?
Yeah, I should have mentioned that earlier. Since nothing had been built around the area I assumed the "helms deep" concept had died.
I have an idea for the battle area in my castle as long as you guys aren't using TNT
I could have it up and running in a few hours if thats acceptable
//edit, actually TNT isnt a problem, how many blocks do we need inbetween teams?
Um, maybe 300 blocks? Not exactly sure. I was hoping to have trenches and bunkers for the attackers to use on the approach to the castle, and some form of 'flag' inside to be the objective.
Prehaps a flag pole in each base, with a wool block as the flag. The attackers would have to break the wool block and get it back to their base and put it on their pole.
Players would have thier spawn set at a specfic area in their base so they can respawn if they die.
I don't think we are using TNT unless anyone wants to.
-A small fort with simple interior (think TF 2fort) made of partly obsidian
-wool block wired to redstone for alert! repeating sounds when it is missing.
-Side room full of beds
-small supply donation area in the front for string/gravel/wood for weapons
-outer walls made of water
-floors made of grass or wood with water 1 block underneath and then ground again to cushion explosions
-some bunkers, lava moats, ect. for people to build and fight over inbetween
POSSIBLY inside a giant colloseum style arena with stands

I'll design and make the trench area and help with the attacking side's start base if I finish before that.
a "CTF" style thing could work, but I'd prefer what they have on madrealms (halo's server) and have something like glowstone to destroy. Maybe attackers have to steal a flint and steel and then go back and light a piece of netherrack on top of thier start position?
before we start building, however, I'd like to see how many people would participate in games, so we can scale the battlefield to fit. No point making a huge fortress if there aren't the people to defend it.

Okay, me, vinnie and raptors have started work. Not much yet, just a base with a bed, chest, furnace ect. but we have a location. it's around 2700x -2000z.
Nah nah nah! Hold up! You're thinking of this wrong! The primary goal is to create a designated area, spectator stands, etc. The rest of the 'inside' stuff, (excluding the main bases for the two teams) would not be there- you'd have to build those during the combat- combat engineers, if you will.
And don't use Obsidian for the main bases- you want sappers to have a chance too, right?
Once I finish my new house out in the boonies and build transportation back to you guys I'b be more then interested. I could also make my own "speedball" arena, like capture the flag but in a small town with bows and arrows and traps and stuff. It could possibly be done by the time you guys build your way out here
It'd be even funnier to build a big floating battlefield at cloud height. Could set floor traps in unsuspecting places that cause people to fall hundreds of feet to their death

Notch needs to introduce a gate that opens up, and a rancor.
Oh, and a flimsy cling film and tin foil control panel that's broken by throwing bones at it.
It's called a multi-piston door. You can make them up to 5x5, I hear. Pretty complex, but if you're building it that high, you don't need to worry much about space.
I prefer Iron Axes myself. Diamond's so flashy, and swords are overrated. Can't cut down a tree in half the time with a sword, now can you?
So, Mondo's been helping me at Mesa, now. If you didn't get this there, Mondo, (and I guess this goes for the rest of you too) if you're willing to help, you get to keep all the cobble you want, as well as any other resources you find in the stone (probably mostly coal and some iron), and you can take as much snow as you want, either from the chest or from outside. You'll need to do a small tree farm for wood, however. Do that on top of the hill or to the side, if you can.
And if anyone wants to volunteer, I need someone that can sculpt or build a giant snake head on a diagonal. I want it big enough that I can have lava dripping down the fangs, if possible.

a spectator stand in which no-one-one will sit. It'd be a pointless waste of time and material.

i like the idea of repairable castles that way you can blow stuff up without having to worry about fixing it. you could also make castle expandsions that rise from the ground when you find the switch hidden in the combat zone.
so each side would have a castle and the switches would be in a no-mans land in the middle sitting on colored wool so each team knew which switch to hit. you would send a scout out and cover them with archers and maybe they activate the walls switch or a tower switch.
you could even have switches located around each team's base for the enemy to use to activate TNT.

I suggested this to Shrike on the server, I think it is a very good idea.

er, I mean, I'm gonna make three minefields full of TNT.
And we'll need a supply of Pistons and sticky pistons, if any of the mods wants to spawn them. They're a bit resource intensive for a battlefield otherwise, and without them you couldn't make forts with lava-slits and drawbridges.

Everything is harvested from the world itself, which just makes the end result even more impressive.

well it was really only made to allow quick transport through the duratunnel.
BTW guys those of you who have steam please join the "dakkacraft" group.
And I have gotten royally pissed off about the railway construction. Look, I understand that you want your tunnels to look nice and clean, but did you have to block off every single side passage? Even that weird 4-way portal was closed off!
And in case you cannot read my sheer rage through this post, let me make this clear.
I will tear that place apart until I find the side passage. All your work, making it nice and even? Yeah, that's just gonna end up making everything look terrible. And just for spite, I'm going to keep the Netherwrack, so you're gonna need to mine some more if you ever want to fix it.
Just a bit of advice, that will probably get you banned. If you have a beef with how something is laid out, take it up with the admin and the creator, don't decide to just do something about it; that's the high speed fast-track to Bansville, stopping only at Bansville.
Yup. Sorry about all the vitriol. It's just something about the Nether. Bad memories? I remember, the reason I went to the Dakka MP server was because of some bastards on my prior one that set up a Nether trap that dumped me in the middle of the Nether, naked. I was burned to death in a pit of lava that was below a piston trap the portal opened into. I was just exploring, then all of a sudden- BAM! Lost all my iron stuff, some ores, etc. etc, and wasn't able to get out, because everybody had their portals locked away behind "You don't have permission to use that" protection mods.
And just for the record, I didn't actually break anything other than some Netherwrack. Didn't touch the railway or the stations, just dug around them trying to find the portal.
Oh, and @ Midas/Bishop/Mumraa/ whoever it was that dug those tunnels in the first place, well, the tunnels were very useful. I would have done that all myself (if I could ever figure out the whole Portal system) or just done an overland road, but the portal there was conveniently placed, and I didn't touch a thing, thinking whoever built it had it there for a reason. It was appreciated while it was around, and now I just hope I'll be able to get it to link up with the Lake portal properly again.

Don't even need to delete too much. If you have the minecraft.exe you use to launch it, you can delete everything else and the update feature will repair it first time you connect.
Be sure to copy saves first, though likely you'll only have to replace the minecraft.jar.

Don't forget time zones (although we're heading towards a 50/50 split, a good portion of the players are in the UK and you posted that at 5am UK time). There are also the school/college/summer holidays (people can play during the day) vs people who have jobs and can only play in the evenings. Now that the holidays are ending, people's playing times may be more synchronised and the numbers may pick up again.

I know the time zone bit, I had a girlfriend that lived in Newcastle, so I can do nifty things most Americans can't, like convert the time to you guys automatically. Used to be able to convert dollars to Euros and Pounds too.
But yeah, on-topic, any spiffy projects going on? I lost my house and I'm just too lazy to walk all the way back out there for nothing.
Inquisitor Lord Bane wrote:But yeah, on-topic, any spiffy projects going on? I lost my house and I'm just too lazy to walk all the way back out there for nothing.
well there's the castle defence thing, but it only really needs beds, swords, soup and someone with a diamond pick, so that could be done by two people in an hour or two, so it's basically finished.
there's the manor which is a long-term project. I hope it will be done by the end of this year, though at the rate of construction it's at at the moment it looks unlikely. For that we need wool, wood and for professor doctor warthog to mark out the walls of each room and label them so I can get to interior designing.
The Dreadnote wrote:Shrike, get him to send me a copy of the plans or something, I'll get the walls done.
Nah we've sorted it. I'm gonna do the lounge and dining room this evening/afternoon, and after that he'll mark out areas. You go and build the lab and the castle defence thing or whatever you want, really ^^
Server is sufferring sustained extreme lag. Possibly due to maintenance or backups. I've taken it offline to prevent people lag-dieing. I'll check with Lego when I can to find out if it's anything our side.
For anyone who's interested, I'm building a speedball arena behind the castle defense. Far enough away that they wont mesh, but close enough to use both for convenience. This will be a bow only arena, no melee. If anyone wants to help out I'm gonna need arrows and cobble once I'm done leveling the terrain (80x100).
Somebody built a tall tower from the manor's balcony. The base of the tower contained TNT, but was mainly a 1x1 stack of sand. When I tried to remove this it turned out that the top of the tower contained lava. Typing this during scheduled restart; don't know the full extent of the damage yet. Will update when we've contained it.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Dumped water over the top and the fires are out. Need to remove the cobble now.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Major fire damage inside. Don't know if we can stop it. A lot of the first floor is gone.
Nobody do ANYTHING on the server and try and keep off it if possible. Judging by the posts, we have an accurate time frame that the thing was constructed in (bathroom flooding not exactly) and so we have a good chance of being able to revert.
You have been warned; server restore is the most likely option, it's up to you if you still want to spend time on projects until it's done.
darkinnit wrote:Does anyone have a time frame from when the sand/tnt tower was not there to when it was there? This will help me spot who put it there.
It wasn't there when I was last on, which I think was yesterday, and it was there by 5pm today.
I only saw it today just before I posted. I've been on a lot of today and yesterday and I never saw it until then. On the other hand it was built in a low-traffic part of the manor so it would have been easy to miss. I'm fairly sure it was recent, though.
darkinnit wrote:Does anyone have a time frame from when the sand/tnt tower was not there to when it was there? This will help me spot who put it there.
Dreadnote mentioned it being there around 16:41 (post time, so just after the 4pm scheduled restart) and if corpses didn't notice it around 2:27pm when he discovered the flooded bathroom., then i'd say it's between those two times.
I found the flooded bathroom too as it happens, a little while before corpses posted it on here. Wasn't sure if it was griefing or just some bizarre plan on his/shrike's part.
If I find whoever burnt down my home before dark gets his hands on them, I will follow them around smacking them with a piece of wool salvaged from the wreckage.
shrike wrote:If I find whoever burnt down my home before dark gets his hands on them, I will follow them around smacking them with a piece of wool salvaged from the wreckage.
n0t_u wrote:I will join you with that, as would everyone who was there trying to put it out.
Agreed.
This griefer must pay for what he/she has done.
... I demand the first strike for almost single-handedly laying down both the first floor's floor and the second floor's floor, as well as contributing the vast majority of both floor's blue wool.
God, whoever did that must be nuts to think they could get away with it. The best advice i can give i to own up and hope you are shown the tinniest bit of mercy.
You turned an entire server against you and they will move heaven and earth to find you. Best not put of the inevitable.
It wasn't even my manor and I feel terrible that it has been destroyed by some idiot who thinks destroying stuff is a good idea. I would dread to think how Corpses and Shrike feel.
What? The only appropriate response to this is a ban from the server. There's no halfway with that, so being a bit less angry doesn't really factor into it.
Server ban is the only way, but is it a dakka forum matter? They did destroy more than the other griefers, but it isn't technically breaking any of the dakka rules.
If it reset occurs it should be to whichever backup occurred before the 4:40 restart, which was just after the trap was triggered. Not sure how often the backups are made though. Should be a few hours at most.
Damn, I leave the server for one week and this is what I find when I come back.
Apparently, this looks like a "professional's work". I mean, building a tnt/lava trap on top of a tower? This isn't the usual sneaky chest robbery we know of.
My opinion on this? Some guy joined dakkacraft with the sole intent of spoiling our fun (i.e. probably one of the new guys that joined the server).
Just an update on what's going on. I've restored just the Manor from backup, rather than the whole world, so only the Manor is rolled back to 12:00 today. I'm still keeping the server offline until I've identified the person who made the tnt/sand/lava tower.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Those of you who died in the lava and fires will have your inventories rolled back to before it happened.
In the logs it probably records peoples deaths and loss of inventory.
Along the lines of
14:23:39: That silly bugger has fallen in lava again. Dropped a diamond pickaxe, those don't come cheap, three stacks of stone and a cake. What the hell did he have a cake for? Expect PM #593 shortly with begging.
Don't think anything else has been targeted. The rollback also only affects the Manor (like some kind of crazy time-bubble).
The deaths I know about because the log shows people typing "ah I'm dead again". I'll probably rollback the inventory of all those who were trying to put out the fires, unless you let me know you didn't die and it's ok.
Laodamia wrote:

i joined the server this week and have been doing a whole lot with sand but i do not own TNT. i have been far too busy dodging mobs while plotting out my sandstone wall.
Just came on for the first time in awhile. Looks like the griefers been doing stuff. Multiple panes of glass in the museum and in the manor have been broken, Manor flooring in the lounge has been dug up and some roof dug.
Doctadeth wrote:Just came on for the first time in awhile. Looks like the griefers been doing stuff. Multiple panes of glass in the museum and in the manor have been broken, Manor flooring in the lounge has been dug up and some roof dug.
The Manor was having rooms made at the time I rolled it back to, so that could account for unusual flooring, but broken glass? Where? Can you be more specific, screenshots? I can't log on right now as I'm at work. Amongst others, Dreadnote and Shrike have been on before you this morning and haven't reported anything wrong (yet).
I have definite proof that the person I banned was the one who made the trap, so any damage now is a copycat or troll. I'm not going to honor the banned person with their name here in the forums, it just leads to flamings and a mess in the thread. I will be telling those affected by it in-game though.

In other news, the upstairs bathroom is now water-free as of 11:30am.
Second sweep and nothing suspicious to report, just 2 windows that have been paneless for a few weeks, and the balcony which can be mistaken for a broken window.

Problem is player numbers. If we don't get something like twelve players on at once we can't fill all the roles.
yeah. but we may as well add it in It'd work quite well teaming up though. The sapper and assassin are two classes who could complement each other nicely, just like the tank can meatshield the demo man long enough for him to get to the castle walls.
Anvildude wrote:Make the walls thick enough, though. 3 or 4 layers thick, so you can't just have a single TNT blow a gaping hole into it.
And I think maybe there should be options for different materials? Water, maybe Lava, sand, etc?
the castle is big enough as it is. It's 3 layers thick ATM, but with the middle bit empty. I could make it solid though...
I'll look into it when I next get over there.
Actually, you could do it like actual castles. Layer it, so the outside and inside are cobble/smoothstone, and the middle is gravel. So you could blast through the three layers, but you'd have gravel falling onto your head afterwords.
if the pre-release of 1.8. I am not giving you a link to anything bad(I got this from a respectable youtube channel). I myself havnt used it but all I know is that you need to replace/backup your current jar file with it.

Really I just want it for the creative mode. I always have one "Sandbox" world that I use Invedit to just mess around with when I don't want to constantly be smacking Creepers away. Invedit is okay and all, but I really hate having to save+exit, then swap back and fourth between game and desktop in the middle of a megabuild to replenish my stocks. Really sucks, especially if you're tasking yourself with building like a huge medieval port city of something.

I also love stone brick and fence gates. and vines.
however no crafting in creative when the list doesn't include many items is a bit silly.

Glad somebody enjoys the (very little) effort I put into getting it XD. Ill wait till the proper release though.

urm, what?
I logged out of minecraft to change skin, but the internet page froze and I had to end the program. When I started it up again, when I tried to log in it said "Login throttled, too many attempts. Try again in a few minutes". I've been retrying for the past hour to no avail. I've refreshed the page, closed and re-opened the page, tried to do in browser and download, and waited about 15 minutes between each try.

Tried the pre 1.8 and it's great fun (admittedly i'm on peaceful on my surv. world, and easy on creative (so I can experience the mobs) so I haven't had to feed myself); found my first ravine and mineshaft (mineshafts, or at least the one i've found, are awesome; ores and other valuables scattered around with rails and wooden beams. They're also really quite extensive).
I'm not sure if it's just creative (only time where I thought of testing it), but F3 doesn't seem to show mob tags anymore, so creepers have become more creepy (as if they needed to) and exploration more tense; might be best to bring a buddy from now on, or at least a death chest.
I'm still very skeptical about the hunger bar and exp; I think they're both pretty unnecessary (someone can argue that you need to feed yourself all they want, but the stone house they're lecturing me in is still defying the laws of physics), and I don't really know how levlling could be implemented, or how it could even benefit you.
There's also the fact that if you die, you lose all your exp, and since dying is one of the easiest things to do in MC, and with food taking time to consume, I just don't see the point in collecting exp at all - at the end of the day, it'd just be one more thing you lose when you die.
the only thing I can think of do get when you level up is something like doing X% more damage in melee or mining X% faster, or having X% more damage durability.
shrike wrote:the only thing I can think of do get when you level up is something like doing X% more damage in melee or mining X% faster, or having X% more damage durability.
That's what I was thinking. Like an RPG mod, almost.
I like the hunger bar if you keep it fully replenished you can only be brought down to halve a heart and not die thats awsum and when you die the xp you had filling the bar dropps and you can pick it back up and when you level up you have a talent tree thing to make you faster or better at talents like mining and running and attacking and stuff =P and has it been officially released yet because wheb yogscast did the video some stuff isnt ready

Probably not, so make a backup of 1.7.3 if you want to keep playing on the server until I upgrade it. I won't be upgrading it until a few patches have been released and/or most major bugs are spotted and fixed. Although this time around they do seem to be being more cautious with the bug testing, this is a major update and there will inevitably still be some.

JAMES.F23 wrote:oh ffs because of stupid lagg i died and there wernt any mobs near me and it was daytime can i have my inventory reset dark
Due to the way online play works, when the Minecraft.net servers are lagging, it causes lag for your connection to the server too (not sure if they keep checking authentication while you're playing). At the moment all the interest in the leaked 1.8 is hammering their login servers hard. Be warned it may get worse when 1.8 is officially released.. :-)
JAMES.F23 wrote:wtf server is really laggy and it just kicked me out and said flying not permmitted ?
I reverted your inventory (and postition) to the time you made this post.
As for why it thought you were flying, it may have been one of the known bugs, made worse because of the lag:
Sometimes the client is slightly off on the position of other players, causing them to consistently appear slightly off of their actual position. This can cause players to appear to be inside floors or walls.
While it is concerning, he does only try one 1.7 world/seed, I would have liked him to try another 1.7 world with a different seed to see if it also happened there too. Could be like he says near the end that maybe he just has a dodgy seed.
Of course there is also the issue of that being the "not finished" 1.8. They may be busy fixing that bug before official release. Who knows?
If that bug is not fixed and we do get that problem, I will probably copy across structures from our 1.7 world to a new 1.8 world, but that's a lot of work so I'd prefer to avoid it if possible, especially when it may be best to wait for them to remove the Beta label in November.
I'm thinking it's some sort of elevation bug, which could explain why the sea level is 1 block lower than it's supposed to be.
If 1.8 doesn't come out today I may give it a try to see what happens.
edit: did a test. The water level does drop 1 layer, but not into an endless ocean (dropped into a ravine in the world I had). So it didn't look like there was any inherent problem with 1.8.
Haha speak of the devil. I've been running a 1.8 pre-release test server and it is an endless ocean biome.
Spoiler:
But we are having fun, made a few small buildings on the oceans surface but mostly just living in abandoned mineshafts that we have made habitable with doors/sealing sections off.
Spoiler:
Most noteworthy mentions are:
-there is no way to use furnaces yet without the server crashing
-Cave Spiders are scary as hell and can fit through single block gaps! They also poison you, which hurts you over time. They seem to be only able to spawn from cave spider spawners, which are surrounded by spider webs that slow your movement dramatically. Think soulsand times 10
-Endermen are just...creepy.
-New bow mechanics rule, as does the hunger bar system.
-Whenever a player dies in SMP and drops their XP, the server lags and almost grinds to a halt until the xp is removed (either by the player collecting it or by removing it with MC edit)
-Cows are now extremely resourceful, dropping multiple leather and raw beef.
-The new lighting system is pretty xD
-When a player dies, the server announces how they died (eg, "Shooms blew up" or "Shooms drowned")
Theres much more than that, and I'm sure a lot of you have already seen most of this in youtube videos, but thats all I could think of off the top of my head.
I can't wait for the first mod with boats and other sailing stuff to come out!
You do know that the giant ocean biome is a bug, right? I mean I'm sure there will be oceans in 1.8 that are much larger than in previous versions, but the screenshot I posted above is just a fraction of what was hours and hours of sailing through nothing but water and small Island chains. It got a little monotonous after a while :(
Jeb's going to "release" an updated pre-release of 1.8 that should fix some of those bugs. I heard they'd definitely been working on the experience orbs bug.
I may test the updated pre-release with a backup of the Dakka world if I have time.
I'm also liking the new announcements of deaths. Now when someone dies, we can all feel sorry for them/laugh at them together. :-D

Yeah I know it's a bug but still, don't you agree it would be cool exploring down a river by boat?
Laodamia wrote:Yeah I know it's a bug but still, don't you agree it would be cool exploring down a river by boat?
Oh yeah I really really do. The first hour of exploring and finding islands was kinda cool. Being scared and thinking that you might not find land, and then when all hope is lost stumbling across another Island. I also think it'd be amazing to find your first massive landmass for the first time, especially if you (like) began the game on a small Island. Unfortunately I wont be able to that that on my server. We can only hope that large ocean biomes are controlled and not nerfed by Notch.
darkinnit wrote:P.S. Love that last screenshot Shooms :-)
Haha I can laugh about it now, but lets just say that at the time it was pretty freaking terrifying!
Lego suggested we run a word cloud generator through the chat logs on the Dakka MC server. For those who don't know, word clouds basically make words bigger by how commonly used they are. After removing very common but relatively boring words, such as "the", "and" and "to" etc, I got this (caution, there are swear words in there, but they are surprisingly small)
I wonder what this would come out like if you ran the whole of dakka through it? I doubt it is possible but it would be fun to see how it turned out.
In other news, any ideas on the 1.8 release yet? I heard it was: Last Wednesday Then Last Friday Then Yesterday But it still isn't out. Have the said anything about the acctual date?
It's like a jumbled sentence as well.
"bedrock" "iustis" "yeh" "goes" "starting"
RaptorsTallon wrote:I wonder what this would come out like if you ran the whole of dakka through it?

Probably possible, but it would probably be a bunch of words scattered around and in "space" and "marine".

Easily. You two are on there most often, and people talk to you a lot.
I noticed 'Mel' is quite popular too.
hey lord bane, what command line are you using for pre1.8 on linux? I'm getting an error using the old command line and are too lazy/busy to go digging through other forums for the correct one.
Just tested the 1.8pre server with a Dakka backup world. Apart from invisible hurty cacti, it works fine, no endless ocean biome and lots of pretty new biomes.
I recorded a video and I will post it shortly (once I encode it and upload it).
Lego I used the linux server, but the windows client, so I don't know what command will get the client working in linux.

I am glad it works. Did you see any particularly nice biomes on your exploration Dark?
Yep, like I said, lots of pretty new biomes. First one was a desert, also saw a swamp, plains and some massive mountains. In the distance was a snow biome too. Found an Enderman after a long search too, but he burned in the sunlight. You'll see them in the video when I get it encoded right.
Player list is also good, just press tab to see who's connected. Couldn't figure out how to fly though (double jump didn't work).
