Ladies and Gentlemen I would like to welcome you to the 3rd annual Nerdcademy award painting competition
after the roaring success of the two previous years I have pulled together enough prizes and judges to continue for another year. This year I wanted to try and again push some ideas and techniques that will encourage and produce some models that are totally different to the 'norm'
so without further ado the theme for this years comp is 'Sin City' now before you rush off to scout for Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba models what we're looking for is the 'idea' behind the cult look the film produces, so what that means is this: you may choose ONE model on a base up to 50mm that comes from the world of Warhammer 40K this can be any race. you may base the model or convert it as you see fit. now comes the important part so listen carefully Painting of the model MUST be done in a grey scale palette, so only any shades between white and black may be used on the model EXCEPT for ONE part of the entire model (the base is included in the term entire model) and this part you may use a spot colour as per the movie Sin City. so be selective and be creative and have fun with it. (any questions will be answered in the thread as we go along)
O.k, so judging will be based on the same formula as last year,
Judging will be conducted by myself along with two stalwart veterans of the Dakasphere! the ever present MOD Whalemusic360 and everybody's favorite Gitsplitta a big round of applause please!
the competition will run from now until the 6th October Aus time
Now for the prizes! lets start with 1st place, I wanted to really do something Nerdingly different and had a mate scan my head and do a 3D print of me I then painted it up and now we have a distinguished and very unique trophy for the lucky winner! as well as a model for them to hone their skills on & something to listen to while doing it!
2nd prize will see the lucky winner receive a couple of box sets of models to light the fuse to paint!
and now for what some see as the prize to end all prizes it's another of 'Nerds Nudes' this is spoilered and nsfw (or anyone's eyes really!) you receive a framed copy right to your door!
Spoiler:
So that's the start! lets see who's in and who's keen to blow us away this year! you need to fight hard hard hard to not 'win' 3rd prize all entrants please make your participation know on this thread and after a week i'll do the first entrants update so you can see who's up against it!
Oh my yes, this will be fun! And you've really raised the bar for the trophy Damo! A plaque and everything!
As for third place, well that is just terrifying. Fantastically terrifying!
I must ponder what to do...
Do we need a "parts" shot before we start constructing/painting? Because I'm all ready to go. Got my idea, bits, everything. I'm just waiting for the flag to drop.
My modelling seems fairly... 40Kish with a lean toward desperate heroism which may fall into the right catagory. I think it'll be the painting that makes or breaks the model. I had to disguard my favourite head because it demanded the spot colour be there rather than where I actually wanted it.
Thanks guys, I'm pretty keen to see what you come up with for this! remember to use this thread to throw ideas around and show progress etc. it's going to be really inspiring I think! and I actually wish I could get in on the action myself lol :-)
Oh Jah, don't worry man, I'll send you a Nerds Nudes Calendar when I rack up enough images! :-) Oh yeah it'll happen!
OK then:
Gone for a Wych as they fit the bloodthirsty side of Sin City. I see her as somewhere between Miho and Kevin.
Only minor changes to the stock model; Straightened the front leg and turned up the toes and swapped the gun for another knife.
Head to be decided,
Spot colour and position to be decided,
What she will be standing on... to be decided...
Spot colour will be on the banner. Theme here is a "hero" but the banner will be him touting a message of submission or destruction. Leaning on the Sin City vibes of even heroes being corrupt and violent. A noble looking figure as the messenger of a corrupt message.
Whilst the prospect of the painting side of it is very intimidating, I just had to do it - love the Sin City comics, and I thought I could have fun with this. Having batted around a couple of ideas - painting up Gaunt, doing a chaos marine in 4 sins - I decided that there was really one thing I could do - a femme fatale, a stripper in the 40k verse:
Not sure about spot colour yet. Following the wife's advice, she'll be on a raised, round podium.
I should really have read the guidelines properly before blindly jumping in. I've never even seen Sin City and even if I did theres no chance I could convert up an appropriate model in this timeframe. I mistakenly thought the idea was just greyscale painting so Im just gonna drop out and walk away from this one.
You wouldn't really need to have seen it. It's just grey-scale with a single spot color. It doesn't have to be Sin City themed, could just be a grey marine with bright red eyes or similar.
So I have primed it black and drybrushed white to highlight the details, Also added some hair to the head I picked out.....
Yours are all looking predictably brilliant, was hoping to gain a little in the modelling for my bad paintwork, but thats out the window by the look of it.
Just made a good point about the spot colour in Cam's thread and thought I'd share it here for everyone that's struggling with the single spot colour concept (or anyone else for that matter).
The point of the colour is to emphasize one element and draw your attention to that item. So it depends on what impression you want to give for the character (what is important to him/her, or tells you about them).
e.g. if they have pretty eyes then give them coloured eyes (although that's probably pointless at this scale).
If skin colour is important, an Ork for example, give him green skin.
If they carry around a favourite item that they hold dear, give that the colour.
Or if they are the kind of person to get "messy" in a fight, give them a splash of red blood.
^ Now that is a tease! I wish I wasn't far too busy to enter this one, it looks like a lot of fun. Good luck to everyone and happy hobbying. I look forward to killi... seeing your submissions!
(Sorry had to pull the ask a ninja quote, for anyone who still remembers that lol)
Simply put! there's some fantastic ideas and work already being put forth I'm really enjoying the discussion and ideas you have really put your thinking caps on for this one and i'm grateful for the efforts. you may post your finished pics on the thread if you wish which is a good lead in for what I want you to do when submitting them!
I would like ALL finished images that you see fit to showcase your model emailed to me at my address hondaboy999@hotmail.com with your name and Dakka handle so I can collate them for the finals. images need to be CLEAR and of a decent cropped size so we can really tell the work you've lavished onto them preferably a backdrop of either plain black or plain white also will be required.
I will then email a collection of the finished entrants to the other judges for scoring and the fun shall begin!
Well I had better ask about basing too, does it have to be a GW base type, or my interpretation is basing is free form but stay with in size constraints?
Um best show you I guess, this is still WIP, and I got to work on the camera a bit because the colours a bit screwy, it is actually grey honest....
Ah crud!!!! I just realized how far behind I am. Lol. Ah well a quick rumage in my magic bits box gave me an idea. So he's built and primed. Now I just need to know if he qualifies.
Ugh... haven't even started yet.... Must get arse into gear.... Must find and watch sin city again.... Ugh..... Too lethargic..... Must procrastinate....
So, i'm working a 40k version of Kaleb Daark, that crazy Malal / Malice follower.
I just got a Dark Vengence box set so I figure I would use things from that and some other bits for a conversion.
Kaleb Daark rode a mutated horse, so to bring him to the 41st Millennium I'm giving him a possessed bike.
*excelllllent......excelllennnnt* Yes I'm rubbing my hands together like Mr Burn from the Simpsons :-) I am actually happy that this has thrown a curve ball at a few of you. the idea seems simple but when you start doing it it's not easy to make the model pop and look good! you guy are doing a damn fine job so far.
I do like painting grey scale to be honest so really enjoyed painting her like this.
Click on her....for a bigger pic, no not there
Spoiler:
That's very cool. Hair could possibly use a slightly stronger highlight to make it really pop... The contrast between skin and leather is awesome, though. Nicely done.
Ermm cool stuff here is it to late to join I think I could manage this as I have an idea in my head although I have no chance of winning the buzz and idea is brilliant ...... who am I kidding i want the picture got to scare trick or treaters away some how
Hey Vik nice job although this keeps springing to mind for some reason :
Disclaimer: These pics are bad, but its just a quick shot before i start on it with my phone camera.
I just felt this thread needed a touch of retro with some re-styling
Edit:
Also seen i have roughly 6 days, so will need to paint quickly for once.
Also, quick question on the spot colouring.
For my model, i assume this would be something like just the eyes? I wanted to do the whole mask, but its quite an area and would be a few other colours. Would this be pushing it or should i just stick to the eyes?
As far as the colors... Well, seein as its Sin City, we only get one!
Granted, though, it can be over as much of the mini as we please. So like a tribal sort of facepaint on your Harlequin Wraithlord, for example. (first thing I thought of seein that )
The thing to keep in mind is that its a technique to accentuate the mini's character. You want to tell a story with him. For example, a femme fatale would get reds on lips and perhaps dress. Someone who is known for getting down and dirty could have blood spatter on him. The color accentuates an aspect of their personality.
Thanks ramos but i cant take much credit.
I have an old harlequin jetbike and i used the canopy to make a press mold.
(i have 2 farseers, autarch, 10 warlocks all on bikes and 7 wraithlords who all use these face plates aswell)
Its a cheap trick, but it worked out well for me.
And thank you for the clarity Initially i was going to fully paint the face plate in the usual harlequin diamonds with a lot of freehanding, but now, i need to change that.
I see your point and it has to be a key element to the model, so i can still do the diamonds, just in grey scale aswell.
I may just paint up the eyes in an emerald/jade colour like jewels as it should stand out pretty well.
weetyskemian44 wrote: I just had a thought - If assembly and novelty are part of the scoring I wouldn't be doing myself any favours picking a one piece metal model right?
Apart from that I've got a box of empire militia bits so a grimdark kitbash with some 40k guns and arms isn't out of the question...
I'm loving those dark eldar entries - they suit the black/white and spot colour thing.
It is a painting & modeling comp, so yes it would.
weetyskemian44 wrote: Ok so. I'm thinking... Its gotta be made from bitz I have at this stage in the game so it depends on what comes to hand from the bitz trays. hmmmmmmmm
You could use a metal model as the base ala this guy.
Or just try to muscle your way though with the painting part, but I suspect that would be tricky.
As for your modelling dilemma, you will see that mine is not heavily converted. Just a few tweaks.
I decided to keep it simple and focus on doing a seamless job. Whether that's enough for good points compared to a stripper, hell-biker, smiling wraithlord, or tyranid butcher (to name a few)... I can't tell you.
So I was looking around at models I'm not using, and I found my old IG Bodyguard, who was tragically cut when the new codex came out, anyhow he has the right look and it won't take to long to do a repaint.
GrimDork wrote: You can barely tell that Wych is greyscale, that's pretty close to the norm for dark eldar
Looks great though!
You're not wrong. That is part of the reason I chose a Wych. I wanted reasonably large areas of skin so that I could do the contrast between pale skin and dark armour... and that is basically a Wych.
If I had the time I was considering painting up one of Vect's slave girls as they seemed appropriate to the Sin City theme, but I've got too many things on my plate hobbywise lately.
Well here is mine finished e-mail will be off just shortly.
Spoilering the rest for time.
Spoiler:
This is going to be a great competition as always, and I have no illusions, I am already beaten, but don't let that stop you, I have learnt so much from these comps, thank you.
Excellent job Cam you should take a bow as it looks great and you really captured the vibe perfectly
Shame as I was so inspired by yours that I wanted to really have a go at this, however after starting it I have found my GS has gone to crap I have ordered some more but still no sign of it and the post has been today
Still got tomorrow but really is leaving me short on time even if it arrives, so it is looking really slim that I am going to achieve what I wanted to do.
I probably won't be done in time. Sorry guys, but illness has stopped me dead in my tracks. If I recover in time I'll crack on, it's not looking likely though.
Just realised how little time i have to finish now.
So are entries closed on the 6th (ie: must be in on the night of the 5th)
Or can we still enter anywhen up until the night of the 6th?
I've kind of worked backwards. I have most of the miniature painted. Still doing some touch-up on it and then finish the base for it. I should be done in time.
That concept inmygravenimage! Wow dude I never thought I'd see a stripping termie but you've managed to accomplish that in an amazing fashion. Sisters repentia sadly aren't good for much but they are good at this apparently!
That ork is phenomenal. The blood stands out so perfectly and that base is really cool. I really dig the checks too, I think they add to the black and white theme greatly.
Amazing work thus far to anyone who's been working on this project. Grey-tones are not easy to work in but you're all doing it beautifully. Really excited to see what some of these turn out like!
The finished models so far are amazing! and the w.i.p are really exciting to see! and the finish line looms ever closer! midnight on the 6th Australian time although that means until I wake up on the 7th lol so get cracking people!!!
and don't forget to send the finished pics to my email hondaboy999@hotmail.com (shut up Whaley )
so I made this fella here... to battle amongst the heavy hitters in this comp... I am sure I can get at least my own nose bloody^^...
here comes...Dwight McCarthy... I have heard he is staring in the new movie with a different face... but I stuck to the old one, thank you very much ...clive owen is much cooler... also... I am rather pleased with my progress of the bridge and all its "parts"... but more to this later this week...
also....this is how it all started...:
parts
primed...
base under construction...
and together with his pals on the trophy shelf^^
as for my fellow already finished competitors... ... seems I am up against upper crust painters here... oh lordy...
I have to say guys this is turning into a truly epic thread!
All of the entries are looking fantastic so far! That said I have to say I love Camkierhi's in particular, couldn't be any more sin city meets 40k.
As for my humble offerings, well I admit I havn't had very much time at all but I still wanted to join in so have spent bits of my evenings making this, its just a sisters of battle nursey type with a new helmet and minor greenstuff to tie it all in. The painting is very lacking but I am quite pleased with the snow effects, not very skilful perhaps but personally I quite like the effect.
Also Vik, great minds, I also used the 40k lamppost!
anyway enough gabbing, cant wait to see how this goes, still got fingers crossed for third prize.....
Nice work guys Vik loving the sneakers really catches the eye nice job indeed J-Paint loving the snow and icicles really does look cold and good call on the green
Well my GS still has not turned up even looked to the old milliput in the bottom of my tool box but thats like rock as well
So my idea of making the Yellow Bastard out of a Goblin has gone out of the window, however I am going to still make it as I have chopped up the bloody Goblin ready for the GS
Spent too much time doing other stuff so had to tear into this today to get it done before the deadline.
Would have liked a bit more time for more freehand work and too add some more details to it.
However, i rather enter something that i can call done for now and actually have an entry.
After this i may spend another few days tinkering with him to get him how i imagined.
But hey ho, them be the stops.
So, my rather old entry (and rather close to the deadline too):
Spent too much time hacking apart the old thing and sorting out his mask than i did any other prep work, so that used alot of my time.
But for now, i call him done
So I pulled my thumb outta my arse and spent yesterday painting like my life depended on it and managed to finish my entry. But now I'm having trouble taking decent pictures of him. They keep coming out way to dark or way over saturated with light.
There's still a few hours to go though so I'll keep working on it.
I am not completely happy with it but considering there is a lot on my plate, it was nice to take a break and do something different. Here is what I came up with, I know the color wasn't used where it would traditionally be for them. I wanted to use the new Model Air Alien Purple I got at GenCon so took this as an opportunity to use it. Instead of doing the skin in the normal alien color, I decided to do the carapace instead.
Wow some cool entries here Snrub that is some very clever shading there and love the shadow great touch, the green blood stain is clever nice clever not going for the red to make it stand out more.
Now its in the hands of the judges tough job indeed
Certainly not a bad attempt by FAR, El!! That looks great!
And insaniak- Im glad you finished yours- Was super curious where you were going with the dead marine. I would honestly never have thought of building that type of scene. I was certain you were using him as just a base element. Absolutely love the usage of your spot color
@Snrub: Good to see Im not the only guy who went green!
And WOW! Brilliant idea with the painted shadow!! I totally missed it until now!
Dr H wrote: So many entries, and all nicely done. Fun times ahead for the judges.
mad_eddy_13; Brave (and I think good) choice to go low-key on the spot colour. Good effort on the freehand.
Good luck everyone.
Thanks, love a bit of feedback I tried a bit more colour but i didn't seem to work...
And I went a little out of my comfort zone on the freehand - it turned out better then I planned.
And everybody else has so much cool stuff and this has been a great learning experience and pure fun
lone dirty dog wrote:Snrub that is some very clever shading there and love the shadow great touch, the green blood stain is clever nice clever not going for the red to make it stand out more.
Thanks. I feel like maybe I didn't make the blood stain large enough. It looked huge while I was doing it but now it looks tiny.
GiraffeX wrote:Yeah that's what I thought as well.
I'll third that wow.
Ramos Asura wrote:@Snrub: Good to see Im not the only guy who went green!

Thanks. I'm quite please with how the shadow turned out. The blood was going to be sky blue at first but it blended in to well with the greys.
Dr H wrote:Snrub, that's a great concept. The harsh lighting and the shadow are nice.
Thanks. I did wonder whether people would "get" the effect I was going for. I hope it pays off.
- Dark Severance, Love the movie poster feel you've got going.
- Ramos, The posing on your marine is great. Looks like he's just noticed something even worse coming at him then what is lying at his feet.
- Insaniak, Your colour splash is perfect. On top of the fantastic greenstuff work and the chipping you've painted onto the chainsword, I feel you're onto a winner there.
-El-Torrminator, I think you've done the chrome look really well. I've never seen that style before so I'm gonna have to give it a go at some point.
Love that shadow effect snrub, I reckon you oughta get a prize. But everyone elses has good points so who knows. I also love the flower corpse and El-Torrminator's looks like the technically best paintjob.
Know I won't win, but it was fun. Gray-scale is defiantly difficult to paint. I went into this thinking "This will be easy" and ended with "Dear lord, why can't I get it to be the right shade!?!?!" and started over a few times.
That is a hell of a line up. So many really good entries. I think the most interesting thing about this comp is what people chose to use as colour splashes. Quite a few interesting choices.
I just wish i spent more time on this now.
I kind of brushed it off thinking that grey scale would be a quick and easy process (as i had never tried it)
However, its rather a different case!
On the plus side, im now tinkering with a few other models as i feel like this could be something well worth learning to do properly.
There were 5 songs played during the ceremony. 2 of the were Garth Brooks. The other 3 were also country. My gift was shotgun and pistol ammo. The beer choices at the reception were Bud Light and Natty Light.
I left early and watched Dracula Rising. Better choice.
My cousin just got married, it wasn't quite that colorful but the entire wedding party did have fancy cowboy style boots on. Nice and short and to the point though
Just for the record... I wanted to say how damn good everyone's entries were and how hard it was to judge. No matter where you place, every one of you should be really proud of the effort and creativity you showed. Painting and building to a restrictive theme is not easy. You guys outdid yourselves & really produced some inspirational pieces.
Just waiting on one more score sheet guys and then I'll announce the winners! :-) seriously great work with ideas and execution alike! I'm so humbled you put so much effort into my little comps! I appreciate it greatly and hope to not disappoint next year!
I don't think it rolls off our tongues like it does theirs deadmeat. I hate to say it, but thanks to dumb people in our country, our word is "like" because why explain things when you can just say like every 5 words
Im either to old to know what YOLO is...... or I'm not hip enough. Granted I know what it means....... but it's not my thing. Nor will it ever be. Never.
Wow what a ride! what a turn out and what a brilliant stable of artists grabbed their brushes, put on their thinking caps for this one! I'm really honored you guy went all in with reckless abandon and did some simply awesome models.
you ALL should be immensely proud of yourselves a different theme calls for different techniques and some who thought their skills 'ordinary' have shown themselves and everybody else that they have it in them to be a force in the hobby world I was pleasantly suprised at just how much I enjoyed seeing all this come together and your ideas and execution are second to none!
thanks to all for having a go, and without further ado lets get cracking on the WINNERS!
In FIRST place.... #1 ...... the WINNER.... Top Dog..... The Best! ...... Most Bestest...
Spoiler:
INSANIAK! everybody's favorite mod! congrats dude and well done, well deserved win and an awesome concept!

Spoiler:
J-Paint! Again great model and awesome job mate I'm glad you entered and you're still in the game!
And THIRD place ......#3.......some would say the most coveted prize ....... pretty good but not quite as good as 2nd......or 1st it's......
Spoiler:
Ramos asura! Woooo if anyone I wanted to win 3rd it was you my friend! well done a great looking model and we'll see you next year! enjoy your prize!
So there we have it another year down! I hope you've all enjoyed yourselves and had a good time and are ready for next year? Winners please PM me your address details so I get them to the correct destination I don't want 3rd prize falling into the wrong hands
Really amazing job everyone! Soooo hard to judge. So gratifying to see the effort everyone put forth in what was a very interesting competition. If I was painting at the time, I definitely would have entered. Would have gotten CRUSHED by the competition... but would have loved every minute of it!
Now I need to find a place to hang this piece of FINE ART! (aw yeah you know you're jealous, guys)
Insaniak and Jpaint- Congratulations!! Those are a couple of great looking minis, Absolutely incredible work you two! I can honestly say that I cant feel bad at all losing out to those. Absolutely FANTASTIC! (next year, though, you punks are going DOWN! )
I also want to give a huge thanks to everyone else who entered. Thanks so much for an awesome contest. I loved seeing everones vastly differing takes on the theme. I, fo one, will be taking a few trick I learned through here and try to use them in my usual painting. One particular technique I absolutely loved was Snrub's harsh lighting + painted shadow. Never woulda though of doin somethin like that!
Till next year, guys!~
Oh, and I would love to hear the judges notes on my entry. Always wanting to know where I can improve!

Fine art indeed! I have a Nerdynudes as well and cherish it. The wife on the other hand
I honestly thought I had no hope with the level of competition this year!
Really chuffed! But i want to congratulate everyone else who entered, if I had been judging I would have found it next to impossible, and mine certainly wouldn't have placed!
Thank you again for organising this though Nerd, was amazing fun, especially as it was something so different. If my current trend continues I'm in line for 3rd place next year, which is secretly where we all wished to place! Come on next year!
Amazing work everyone! I wish I wasn't so busy with the league this year that I coulda joined in on this. Oh well I'm very much lookin forward to next year and you bet your shenanigans I'll be taking home third place. I just bought a new house and have a great spot in my living room that will be perfect for the prize.
Congratulations to Insaniak, Ramos and J-paint. Three very deserving winners, that's for sure.
Many thanks to Damo for running the comp, the judges for judging and the other entrants for making the judges lives hard by putting forth so many killer entries.
Ramos Asura wrote:One particular technique I absolutely loved was Snrub's harsh lighting + painted shadow. Never woulda though of doin somethin like that!
I'm honestly a little surprised that more people didn't do it. To me it seems like a style of painting that was made for a competition like this. Especially given that the Sin City subject matter. I was expecting every man and his dog to get in on the harsh lighting. I look forward to seeing what someone of your skill could do with the technique though Ramos.
Just a note to the winners. as i'm getting ready to head off to Hawaii for a couple of weeks of sun and fun there will be a delay in posting prizes :-( I have other packages to send off as well so i'm planning a bulk mail out when I get back! but i'll keep you 'posted' :-)
Definitely was a lot of fun. You don't realize how hard it is to only do a gray scale until you actually start doing it. Congrats on the winners. If anyone would like to PM me, I would love feedback on what to improve on as well. Thank you!
Got to say I loved snrub's piece. My second fave was the Dwight piece. Third was Camkhieri's Marv.
I also liked Insaniak's marine, which reminded me somewhat of the blue flowers theme sometimes used in Rogue Trooper, especially in the Prog 2000 Mercy Heights coda.

i'll try and be more present next comp so stay tuned! might happen sooner rather than later......
depends what sort of ideas you guys can throw at me?

To be fair, it's only a bronze one... and I won it as much for the novelty value of the rebuilt Aquila (I was the first to do that, as the 2003 Oz GD was only a couple of weeks after that set arrived in stores) as for the actual standard of the entry...
I do still take it out of the cabinet and pat it occasionally, though...
Oh... It's ok everyone. It was only a bronze one. We all have those lying around.
Your reconstructed Aquila was showcased in one of the local white dwarfs was it not? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing it in one of the old issues I've got lying around.
I'm not sure. I know there was a picture in the issue that had all of the GD winners. I also sent them a bunch of WIP pics showing the build process as they had mentioned an interest in possibly doing a feature on it, but so far as I know that never actually happened.
Good news, I finally finished. Yes, I realise this is way late for any consideration, but this is the first model that I have finished completely, and it was an interesting challenge - I wanted to share it!
Thanks for sharing KB! :-) I am really glad you showed us the finished result! your whites look great on the marine and are weathered really really nicely, it'd work beautifully on a White Scars army :-)

Thanks mate, it was way too ambitious for someone with so little time. Still, I am pretty happy with how it worked given I only used 3 paint pots (4 if you count blood for the blood god).
Gitsplitta wrote:Nice work on the party-coloring too.
oh right, thanks mate - that was the biggest pain.
airbrushing with lots of tape, lots of liquid mask, and lots of blue-tac. Then because of the delay, I had it masked and didn't know what colour I was supposed to put down, so I had to unmask it...
