Just like last month, this poll will run for 48 hours, with the highest-polling entry being the theme for next month's challenge and the second-highest given another shot in the next Subject Poll.
For April 2015, the subjects you can vote on are:
Veteran: "You don't know, man, you weren't there!"- Your entry should be veteran of a campaign or battle. Anything goes so long as it looks like it has been to hell and back!
Knight: "In days of old, when Knights were bold..." Enter a Knight, in armour shining or otherwise. Anything from a towering Imperial Knight Freeblade to an Infinity Magister Knight, via historicals and fantasy minis. If it has armour and a big sword, it's in! (yes, Jedi Knights do count! )
Lighten Up: "Careful with that flamer-AAAARRGH!" Light, fire and/or explosions should play a part in your entry, be that on the model itself or through the use of OSL/directional lighting or similar techniques.
Out of Place: "You ain't from around here, are you?"- Your entry should consist of models used for something other than their original purpose. This could be a Fantasy mini given the Inq28 treatment, an Orc as an Ork, or a historical mini with a fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk ect. makeover
For those who missed the first thread last month, this challenge is open to anyone of any level of skill or experience, and in terms of what can enter, I'll be as lenient as possible, so the chances are so long as your entry is at least tangentially related to the theme it should fit in! The results each month will be decided by community poll, and a league will be set up to track your points over time. For the full rules, see the current Challenge thread.
So, ladies and gents, what do we want to see and paint in April?

No orks? Wait a second...what category would an ork runtherd fall into?
77159
Post by: Paradigm
No Orks (as a theme), simply as I'll be avoiding race-specific ones for a while since we just had one.
A runtherd could probably fit into Veteran with a bit of conversion, or perhaps Lighten Up if you were to add some kind of flame/zap effect.
At the end of the day, though, if you can't find a category that fits this month then there's always May!

Oops, hit show vote instead of what I wanted to vote.
Sigh. I love all these ideas, so it's for the best I broke the way to vote
(Thinking I will do a knightly brother who is a vet, or a vet who has knight themes. If I have to, I'd work on my inquisitor retinue.)

Will the painting thread go up after in 48 hours, or will we be waiting for until the 1st before we can start our entries?

Post by: Paradigm
I'll throw the actual challenge thread up on the 1stof April, just so we don't have two running at the same time (keeping the OPs on both current would be a nightmare even for those few days of overlap, I think).
Of course, if you want to snap your proof pics early and get a head-start, we'd never know

Welcome to the forums!
There is no obligation to finish if you enter, nor a penalty if you don't, so don't worry about that! Check out the current thread to see the range of entries we've had, all kinds of styles and skills on show there. And you get league points just for completing an entry even if you don't got in the top 3.
The challenge thread this month has been very motivational to a lot ofpeople, so I (naturally) heartily recommend joining in!

OK Paradigm, should we do Veteran, I have this idea for an Ork Runtherd.
Paint him to look like he's old.
Here goes nothing:
Paint the Squig Hound body evil sunz scarlet mixed with troll slayer orange.
Paint the grot prod tips auric armour gold
Paint the rest of the grot prod Beaten Copper
Paint the skin green, with touches of grey
Paint the clothes Khorne Red.
How does that look for a plan?

Making him look old would certainly fit!
However, you may want to experiment with using more than one colour on each area. It can seem daunting at first, but even something as simple as a drybrush or wash over an area really helps make a mini look better! What better time than a challenge to push yourself and do something new?

@TGK: The challenge itself will start on the 1st April, and run until the 30th.
As for the mini, as the organiser I'll have the yes/no over whether it's suitable, but as I want to see as many entries as possible, I'll always try and be as lenient as possible. If, for example, Veteran wins and you want to enter an Imperial Guard conscript or a Militaman, then it's probably not going to fly, but basically so long as it's not directly opposite/completely unrelated to the theme, it's good to go!
@kencotter: VotLW certainly counts for that!

Thatwould be fine. If in doubt, just paint on a medal or give him a fancy hat, and bam, instant Veteran! Besides, who in their right might would say no to a Giant Badger-riding Warrior?

Well, veteran leaves a lot open in terms of what you can do with painting; it's less about the mini, and more about the look of the mini, for example if it looks weathered or old. But for Orks, any kind of Nob/FLash Git/Loota/Warboss that looks the part would be fine!
Oberron wrote:

Yep, a tank that looked right would be perfect. Automatically Appended Next Post: TP^DC Deputy Manager wrote:What are we classifying as veteran? Are we basically saying it's someone who looks like they have been through hell and back?
Yep, basically. As said above, it's more about the look of the mini than the choice of mini, so a good chance to show off weathering/ageing/injury-conversion ect ect.
From your own army, DA, the obvious picks would be anything Ravenwing, Deathwing, Company Vets, Vet Sgt, that short of thing.

77159
Post by: Paradigm
See the OP of the current thread for the rules in full. Short version:
1 entry per person, up to 5 (related) models may be submitted in one entry. One proof pic and up to 4 final pics must be submitted to enter/finish. All voting is then done by the community at large. Points get added to a league (10/8/5 for 1st/2nd/3rd respectively and 1 point per completed challenge even if you don't place!)
Hope that clears it up, feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Post by: Paradigm
So, if I set it up right the Poll should be over now, and Veteran seems to have won, with Out Of Place coming in second (so guaranteed to appear in the next Poll.
The challenge thread will go live on the 1st April, next Wednesday. For those planning models, and since it's been mentioned the theme is (intentionally) vague, here are some things I would certainly consider eligible for the Veteran challenge:
- Any model that has the word "Veteran" in its title, such as a 40k Veteran Sergeant, an Infinity Veteran Kazak, or a LotR Osgiliath Veteran.
- Any model converted/painted to show suitable wear-and-tear for a soldier in the field for a long period of time.
- Any model displaying, bearing or receiving some kind of honour, medal, campaign marking ect.
Obviously that's not exhaustive, but it might give you a few ideas. Like I said before, though, so long as it's not a Cadian Whiteshield Conscript or something, then it's probably good to go! Bear in mind voters will be looking at relevance to the theme as well as just painting skill!
See you there!

There will be a thread started when the challenge goes live, in which you should post your Proof and final pics, and show off any WIPs if you want. There's no need to wait until the end of the month for final pics if you finish early, either, just post them whenever you're done.
I'll keep everything neat in the OP, and the thread becomes a place for discussion/questions/encouragement/feedback. See the current thread for an idea of how the whole thing works.

From most of these “does it fit” questions, apply the rule of cool. Can you spin it in a way that makes some vague connection and sounds awesome? Then you are OK. The whole point of these contests is to encourage creativity, and get people painting. And we want to be as inclusive as possible. Worst case scenario, when it comes time to vote, someone might go “I don’t get it” and picks someone else. It’s not like there are entry fees and cash prizes on the line. Just internet bragging points. And a sense of participation and community, an excuse to push your boundaries, and see what everyone else can do.

Couldn't have said it better myself! I approach this like I approach 40k: If the rules get in the way of having fun, stuff 'em! As Nev says, Rule of Cool always wins, so if you want to enter an IG conscript and can convince me that in IG terms, getting through basic training makes you a Veteran then go for it!
Basically, unless it's totally unrelated to the theme (say someone wanted to enter a Dragon in the Space Marine challenge without a VERY good reason ), I'm not going to say no!

When is comes to variations on the theme I feel like a good back story can sell most anything. If your explanation how you mini fits the theme is crap, then shame on you.
As someone said, you can vary anything to fit most anything. A veteran ork need not be a veteran himself, he could be wearing bits and pieces of say a DeathWing armour as a disguise. And since deathwing are very much veterans... Tada! Theme fullfilled.

I think we should all add a small background info sentence or two for our models. So we can somewhat clarify the veteran status etc.

Well, I won't make it a requirement, but if anyone wants to add fluff, I'll post it alongside the finished mini in the voting thread!
Just a short blurb, though, no 500-page epics on the exploits of that Space Marine that is a veteran, honest guv, even though he never passed Scout training!

Veteran?
Perhaps Fistius Fistgar will have to make his presence known!

Can't wait! I really enjoyed last month's challenge.
I think for April I'm going to do a BA Chappy to go with the DC from March!

Yep, the whole point of these is to be open to anyone, from 5-time Golden Demon winners to someone painting their first minis! Just post in the thread when it goes up tomorrow and you're fine to enter! Welcome to Dakka!

Everyone is welcome to join. And welcome to Dakka, by the way.
Just put a “before” picture in the new thread when it starts.
Is it April yet on the other side of the world? I kinda want to get started, but don’t want to steal a march on the competition. It would taint my inevitable victory.

So long as you post the proof pic tomorrow, I think you're OK to start! I'm sure it's technically April somewhere now!

I'm quite excited about April's competition, hopefully my initial plan will meet fruition and I can complete something to a better standard than this month.
I really hope May's theme is something I can slot some Tau into - I want to vary my painting from just Dark Angel green and paint up a Farsight Enclave army in tandem. Before I could put my thinking cap on for April of what Tau veteran I would do, my long-engrained Imperial mind-set shoved a cool idea in my head which I just can't shake.

You could totally do a Tau vet. One springs to mind from the books - a tau pathfinder called Jhi’kaara or 'broken mirror'. Think she was badly wounded to the face (lost an eye maybe) and gets all hardcore and grumpy (for a tau). She's in a book and a short story - Fire Caste (not a great read at all but she's pretty cool in it) and Out Caste as well I think. Fluff could make for a pretty cool conversion piece.

Might as well join in and do this. I will attempt to paint a Ranger alpha from the new Skitarii army. Wish me luck.

I think I got a good idea for a model. Thinking of a Chaos Champion of Tzeench/aspiring sorcerer model.

Not a bad idea, gotta tell you though it was more that my Dark Angel idea got me all excited. I started thinking about visually what a veteran was and I come across people who have "endured" life and some who have been through war. It's about loss, be it physical or mental that marks that they have survived. Veterans just keep going despite this. So I landed upon the idea of prosthetics to mark those who found a way to keep fighting. So I'm using a combination of standard SM Company Champion parts, DA veteran parts and Iron Hands finecast components to form 3 members of a Dark Angels Command Squad who are attached to Azrael. I own an old metal apothecary and brother bethor models, but not sure I'll focus on these primarily. I want Brother Bethor's standard to be swappable so I can have all of the sacred standards and company standard etc and I can't immediately work out how to make the metal apothecary look veteran.
Long explanation, but it's why I never even got close to thinking about a Tau veteran, because I got super-motivated to make these DA veterans.

Hey guys,
here is my project.
A Space Wolve even when I don't usually built and paint SW.
Most parts are from Scibor Minis.
My brother in law gave me these parts a while ago and I never knew what 2 do with them....
