So there comes a time in almost every armies life that it starts to look tired, and I do not mean because the games Meta has changed and your carefully crafted forces is losing on the battlefield. Your army looks worn-out because you have seen it on the battlefield so many times, or other members of your gaming group have accidently sat on some of them, perhaps the dice or even terrain has knocked off some paint, etc.

So this happened for my Necromundian 8th Imperial Guard Regiment, I had bought the boxed set as soon as they released the Cadian plastics…mostly to replace the two Catachan and two metal Cadian armies. I decided to paint them as a tribute to my original Imperial Guard army painted back in Rogue Trader that I ended up selling to a chap in Sweden many years before. That meant reverse-zebra striped Codex Grey fatigues from WD 109 and from the box of 36 plastic Guardsmen. I did this and an army consisting of a Command HQ, two PCS, five painted Infantry Squads, two Heavy Weapon Squads, Ogryn Squad and several tanks battled other gamers at my group and at the local GW Store in downtown Vancouver and then in Richmond after the former closed.

So here is a rebuild of the PLOG I lost for a long while on WarSeer, this time round there is obviously going to be a lot more painted figures and less unpainted ones, but there is still more to build…because any true Guard player knows that their army is never truly finished.
Some progress shots of the army through the years.

Picture from WD 109 that started it all. (Photo Property of Games Workshop)

Shots as the army has grown:

2014

2020

At the start of this PLOG my plastic Necromundan (Cadian) Army consisted of:
Company Command Squad (5)
1 Commissar
Ogryn Squad (5)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
3 Infantry Squads (30)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
2 Infantry Squads (20)
1 Heavy Weapon Squad (6)
Sentinel Squadron (3)
1 Hell Hound
2 Leman Russ
1 Demolisher
1 Basilisk

Now the army stands at:

HQ
Company Command Squad with all the Specialists (10)
4 Commissars
2 Priests
1 Primus Psyker
Adeptus Mechanicus Squad (5)

Elites
Storm Trooper Squad (10)
Storm Trooper Squad (5)
Ogryn Squad (5)
4 Veteran Squads (40)
4 Chimeras

Troops
Platoon Command Squad (5)
Chimera
4 Infantry Squads (40)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
Chimera
4 Infantry Squads (40)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
Chimera
4 Infantry Squads (40)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
Chimera
4 Infantry Squads (40)
Platoon Command Squad (5)
Chimera
4 Infantry Squads (40)
6 Special Weapon Squads (36)
4 Heavy Weapon Squads (24)

Fast Attack
Sentinel Squadron (3)
Hell Hound Squadron (2)
1 Valkyrie/Vendetta

Heavy Support
2 Leman Russ
1 Demolisher
2 Hydra
3 Griffon/Basilisk

The long painting war continues...

CB

PS: I have one unit that has never changed when just about every other squad has had models replaced or converted as Sergeants could have Storm Bolters, then only Las Pistols/Bolt Pistls and then finally Bolters (but still no Las Guns ). Heavy Weapons became teams and two wound models. Heavy Weapons in Squads were good, then bad, then good, then bad again. Someone will notice which unit has never changed eventually.

Ahh, the old spiders.

I build a box of the old RT plastics, and reinforced them with some metal at the time. No tanks though. I could field an army before this new fangled platoon setup. Back in the day of 10 man squads and heavy weapons on your shoulder. Good times, good times. I might have been able to fake an army in 3rd with what I had, but nothing relevant. These days they are just tucked away in boxes.

Always nice to see a well painted army, especially with classic elements. Looking forward to some closeups.

Well all I can say this that is their choice. However I have only produced about half of my active PLOGs and none of those where the army has been sold.

Thanks Nevelon, close-ups to follow, but first I guess I should post where I started...a little embarrassing as these were painted and converted back in 2004. However PLOGs have to start somewhere. So these are old and pre-refresh pictures.

Now at this time the Heavy Weapon was not yet a two wound troop, so I was mounting them on smaller bases to allow for flexibility. Guard Sergeants could also carry Storm Bolters and hence those rather large conversions. So one of my first changes was replacing those models, making the bodies into VOX Operators and the rest into new bodies with converted Storm Bolters.

Here are the converted Sergeants:

A few extra bodies required where the Heavy Weapon Team was removed to be mounted on a proper large base:

An updated Squad:

Tons more to come as there are over 300 images in my Necromundian Guard gallery and loads more to upload.

Thank you Cap'n Facebeard, some more photos of the Storm Bolter Sergeants and photos for Inevitable_Faith:

The previous Sergeant bodies that had the VOX sets on their backs were converted to regular VOX Operators (waste not want not).

The Storm Bolters were made from Ork Sluggas, Vehicle Accessory Sprue Storm Bolter Barrels and normally the Flamer arm for the strap to keep the model somewhat more realistic if the weapon was not across the chest.

Thanks Brother SRM, the paint scheme is the original Imperial Guard camouflage, Codex Grey with Black over White stripes.
Inevitable_Faith wrote:Love seeing the bolter weaponry on some Humiez, it really is eye-catching. Beautiful conversions, keep it up.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith, but that became a problem as the next Imperial Guard list removed the Storm Bolter from the Sergeant's repertoire.

Suddenly I needed eight Sergeants with Las Pistols or Bolt Pistols... Sadly a very common problem with Imperial Guard as just about every change in Codex changes options. I still had to start converting the Heavy Weapon Teams onto the 60m bases as well.

With a lick of paint.

The caps look great. It was sucky when they axed Sgts w/ rifles, I would have preferred my Sgts to at least have a lasgun, much more realistic. I know, sci-fi, but Guard infantry IMO should have a touch of realism.

evildrcheese, lots of tanks, but I got to them later as they had been painted to an acceptable level and 40K had shifted to an infantry army with vehicles blowing up due to light winds.

Cap'n Facebeard, agree with you entirely, they did give up Bolters in the latest Codex, but still no Las Guns (those conversions will come later).

In the meantime with the Sergeant crisis over I continued to build VOX Operators.

And start on the Heavy Weapons. This was a Missile Launcher Team re-positioning as I liked to use the kneeling legs for many regular Guardsmen,

Then a Heavy Bolter Team mostly prone.

Thanks Cap'n Facebeard and evildrcheese. I made the prone gunners out of standing legs of the Tank Commander from the Vehicle Accessory Sprue.

So I had long since decided that I would not be painting the helmet stripes of the original Imperial Guard (the red arrow, yellow cutlass, blue sunburst, etc) to mark units...partially because it was more of a Space Marine theme and it removed some flexibility from moving around Guard troopers between squads. But that did not mean I did not experiment, and some of those were failures...here was an attempt at a Command HQ and a PCS and using the Shoulder Pads to mark units.

I had just repeated the problem on a smaller scale...So I decided the should pads would get the Guard skull and the Regimental # and that was it. That way the swapping of models would be easy as new Codex's came out changing unit sizes and compositions.

You know it sort of does.

I liked the other style better, the dropping of the clip into the AutoCanon as it fires. So the third and final one was made like the first.

And here is the entire squad:

It should be noted that it was not until the third Heavy Weapons Squad that I actually got to AutoCanons having done Missile Launchers and Heavy Bolters first...very strange for Imperial Guard players as the AutoCanon is the best choice for Heavy Weapons normally.

Thanks Brother SRM.

Here is the missile Launcher Squad (I did not seem to have any photos of them other than the repositioning team).

Saved four kneeling Guard there and they started to get assembled in my Infantry Squads...on in the cases below the Veteran Squads I started.

I started painting spider tattoos on the faces of some Veterans and also decided I would place the Imperial Guard Skull on the right shoulder pad and the number 8 on the left should pad to solve my blank issue and make all the models interchangeable between squads/platoons/PCS/etc.

Steady Cap'n Facebeard, you don't want to buy more when you still have cool armies of True-Scale Marines to paint (I have seen your PLOGs).

So worked on a few more Veterans with Shotguns. The one on the left a conversion with the spare Shotgun from the Forge World kit.

Now that would be truly old school...and no I never had one of those as I just could not abide the model...I built my own and then sold them on eBay or perhaps it was the newsboard for GW before eBay.

More on the Sentinels. Now I just could not stay with the Lascanon only option, so I cut them off and added rare earth magnets. The Lascanons were so heavy I had to add a brass pin to keep them from pointing at the ground.

Third of the bunch. The lucky #7...cause when you play Sentinels you need to be lucky.

The whole Squad:

Next step was building alternate weapons as I had some Multi-lasers and that was it (did not even have enough Multi-lasers either).

Interesting that both of our armies are called spiders but are so vastly different.

Also, I had no idea how many different poses you could do with cardians. I thought they were kind of boring but I'm obviously wrong.

I'm now tempted to do an IG army (maybe more elysian) but I definitely shouldn't until i finish my ad mech/ork stuff.

Those sentinels look dope. They're probably one of my favourite units.

Just catching this for the first time today. What a huge amount of work, care and attention you've been putting into these. Love your heavy weapons teams the best. The running heavy bolter crew and the very commonly participatory loaders! It's sterling work. I also loved seeing the old Orgryns. Makes me want to dig mine out and repair them too. Though I have a heavily converted (using Mordheim parts) veteran squad I really meant to paint sometime years ago. You're an inspiration.

Thanks, making them look as much like the real thing was the goal. They are much longer than the new Sentinel kit ones and were based on the Infantry model.

Thanks the Crowe, that is very kind.

So Tread Heads I started updating the vehicles with a severely damaged Chimera I received in trade that was going to be a static terrain piece as the turret was glued to the body and lots of parts were missing. I started adding some parts, but then broke the frame and that let me even the tracks and make the model level and stable and it no longer looked like a warped Chimera so I decided to save the tank and refurbish it.

If you look carefully you will see bubbled areas of the hull and joins from excessive plastic cement, but after painting it looks like a older and rather rusted transport.

Thank you for the comments and the views.

I think being able to salvage a botched assembly or a damaged kit is always amazing. I have so many of those lying around but I never have the courage or time to invest in one of those 'fixer-uppers'.

Great job on the paintjob for the Chimera. I've seen much better put together models end up looking much worse.

Haven't yet decided whether the Scions have taken the lead or not in that department, though.

Mm. I dunno. I think the best iteration of Stormtroopers so far are the original 3rd edition metals. Sinister and well-equipped, they look and feel the business. The Kasrkin look like their intended function - heavier, more aggressive Cadians!

Nah. Their uniforms aren't uniform enough. I don't understand why all their torso armour pieces are different. It's silly. Lots of nice parts though.

As for Captain Brown's stormtroopers - very nice painting. Different enough to stand out, similar enough to fit in beautifully.

I’m going to have to agree with pretty much everything Gen. Steiner has said here. No slight against Kasrkin, they are great models (and well painted here) but I’ve got a soft spot for the old metals. Mine are the last thing I added to my guard before shelving them.

As for the Storm Trooper debate I have never owned any Scions, I do have a squad of the 3rd edition metals that will appear in my Elysian Army. The Kasrkin are in my Spiders Regiment, speaking of which here are a few more for you viewing pleasure.

Unfortunately, painting all the fun stuff like Storm Troopers and Adeptus Mechanicus meant I had to paint more regular Trooper, especially VOX Operators as my first go round with this army had none.

But this lot gave me enough to complete the First Platoon - three Infantry Squads - Heavy Weapons Squad - PCS

Including a Platoon Standard just like the old Imperial Guard, although the Platoon Command Squads had lost their sixth member and two Lascanons of old.

If you can find a nice quick way to paint them, it's much easier. It also helps with the Guard because you can mix-n-match units (my Force Z has a platoon of metal Cadians and a platoon of Tallarn, for example, supported by two different types of Stormtrooper, Ratlings, Ogryns etc).

Captain Brown has found such a method here - and also builds the army bit by bit, so suddenly you have a really big army that's crept up on you!

Thanks Toxic_Toast, it is just part of the fun. Take a look at Gen.Steiner's PLOG for how many he has painted and how he gets around the repetitive part.

Thanks Gen.Steiner, I only wish I have found an easier paint scheme...but I was copying the original Rogue Trader scheme which gets built up to Codex Grey and then has reversed Tiger stripes added on top...which makes each model it's own little job.

Painted another pair. One reloading...not sure why he is bothering as it will do the same damage to the enemy as a fully charged flashlight.

For what it's worth I found it was easier to paint a metal hoard than a plastic one. With metal I didn't have that assembly time or get diverted into doing complex conversions.

Thanks Nevelon,

So starting from my five squads and heavy weapon squad I had continued to augment my squads and freeing up troopers for new squads. I had built new heavy weapon teams and those six models added to the pool, but required some more Special Weapons and Sergeants. So that was next on the painting table.

With a few more additions I could have nine complete squads.

Thanks Dysartes, the notification came out on Sunday here in Canada...and except for the Kasrkin and a Commissar they were all listed as "Sold Out".

Next tank was a Basilisk, first in it's squadron.

But it looked so plain so I added more netting.

No, still catching up with my completed models.

The third of the Griffon Heavy Mortars as it looks like I did not bother to photograph the first two as they had already been photographed as Basilisks.

Not a silly question at all, kakita - and Captain, feel free to correct me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.

The white circle with a lightning bolt in it is one of the symbols often used as a campaign marker by the Imperium - the older transfer sheets included them, along with a couple of others. All the units would have that symbol painted onto them, in addition to their regimental colours or other insignia, as a way of telling units that are meant to be serving together.

Thanks kakita and Dysartes,

Good question and a good answer. To be honest it could be a campaign marker or Imperial Armour symbol, or Steel Legion or an army marker...it is on all my vehicles. Although I guess the skull motif is pretty constant throughout my army and could be an army marker...but then other folks would say that is a general Imperial Guard symbol. Viewer's choice.

They're looking nice and consistent in terms of quality, Captain - though I did just have to double-check 9 & 10 to make sure it wasn't the same hull with a different turret on top

Any plans to add a moniker to the scrollwork on the sides?

Thanks Dysartes,

Each vehicle is unique in wear and scheme. Although some have a few more rust spots, grease stains, damage, sand build-up, paint chips, etc. #21 probably has the most.

No, the small scrollwork on the sides has been left as is.

As another break from tanks I did some more Adeptus Mechanicus to help maintain the vehicles.

Thank you evildrcheese, I needed to do something as I did not have anywhere near enough searchlights...and the low turrets of these old Chimera models would have made getting the large new ones from a bits supplier look silly.

One more Chimera #12:

Then someone pointed out that almost all the ends of the smoke launchers looked like something off a demonette...so a did a very thick black wash to them all.

While I was at it I did some other small additions like setting up swappable secondary weapons (Flamer versus Heavy Bolter):

Flamer versus Heavy Bolter...it was a little tricky on already assembled and painted tanks. I basically had to build a back rest inside the tank for the magnet to sit properly.

Or a Heavy Stubber.

That kept my Tech Priest and his Servitors busy for a while.

This picture shows the second Hydra without sand, dust, rust, etc. Seems I did not take a picture of this when completely finished one...oh well.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith, part of the delay was the fact so many of my tanks were so old they had the previous vehicle track sprues and no track armour. That is all going to the Leman Russ and Demolisher. Only two Chimera ended up with track guards and one is a command tank and the other appears to have scavenged it.

Now I have never really appreciated the Ratling Snipers, so for a Guard Regiment from Necromunda you have Ratskin Snipers instead.

And those little blighters give me three Elite Choices with the Storm Troopers, Ogryns and Ratskins coupled with five platoons and one Veteran Squad, 2 Command HQs and lots of vehicles.

I've never been a fan of the Ratling sniper models myself but those Ratskin models are a great play on words/fluff to sub in and I think it's an awesome alternative. The force looks awesome all together, really top notch. What are the basic guns your vets are carrying? Those don't look like lasguns at all, shotguns maybe? Are they even GW guns or are they converted? So many questions, but regardless I love them, they look awesome on those guardsmen.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith,

Other than the special weapons the Veterans are armed with Shotguns from the Forgeworld upgrade kit (as are most of the torsos). Some folks have seen me use the Veteran heads on other models and those I have replaced with Catachan and other heads, usually with my own forage caps. So Forgeworld and GW parts throughout, with some putty used in head gear.

More Veterans:

Third Veteran Squad:

So in effect I had to roll some of my platoons into each other to get down to three large platoons to keep my six troop choices.

Thanks guys! It's a very interesting marker.

So I got a question for ya CB if you don't mind answering. It seems you paint much of your infantry two at a time. Is there a reason for that? Many people would batch paint a unit of ten all at once. You have painted a ton of infantry and I'm wondering did you paint most of it two at a time and did you find that faster or in some way more efficient?

Inevitable_Faith,

I have always found 2-4 models at a sitting are as many as I can paint. I like to see some completed results for each sitting and thus my units slowly grow around two at time. Two seems to be the most common number.

Although my next picture is of three...it was with great joy that when the last Guard Codex came out we could get Bolters for 1 point for Sergeants...still cannot get Las Guns...but we can get Bolters. The reason for 3 was then I could replace a whole Platoon's Sergeants at once.

Thanks for the explanation CB. I have a unit of 10 wyches to do, I may just try doing them 2 at a time to see how I enjoy that.

I have some tempestus scions that I'm disappointed in the tempestors for, they can't take the basic rifle the rest of the squad gets and instead have to take a pistol. When your unit is only 5 guys that loss of firepower outside 12" range hurts. Your bolter sergeants look good man, they fit in nicely.

OK, more Guardsmen...this time some Flamer armed Troopers...tried a little variation. Heads and hand positions.

Then I stumbled across something I did not expect, a member of WarSeer who was following the PLOG suggested some Battletech decals of the Black Widows of Natasha Kerensky fame. Suddenly I could add spider patches to my "Spiders". Check out the right forearms of each of these Guardsmen:

Now the decals are pretty small, and in the end the forearm seemed the only place I could place them consistently. After I did that I thought about shaving off the back mount and placing the patch there, but so many of my Guard have packs I decided against it. I gave larger patches to Officers and Sergeants.

Those decals are a great idea and add even more personality to your already very awesome force. I love the idea of the strap for the bolter to tell the viewer that "this weapon is heavy and not designed for human hands". I really appreciate the little conversions you do scattered all over your army, some people go hog wild with conversions and the army seems to lose some cohesion, an important trait for IG in my opinion, but your conversions are so tastefully done for a purpose that they blend well but can still be appreciated by anyone who knows the model range.

Thanks stonned_astartes,

The Shotgun armed troopers are Forgeworld bodies and a mixture of Forgeworld and my own converted heads...regular Cadian legs.

Now here is a shot with the regular Cadian helmetless head that I have been giving Forage Caps to and one of the heads from the Berlin or Bust German Forage Caps. The second option I was going to start using in a big way for a Conscript unit.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith,

To be honest I have liked this look so much that I considered converting the rest of my army...then I counted the 200+ figures I would have to change, then the conversions for Special Weapons and metal figures and I quickly discarded the idea. Besides the filing off of the shoulder pads is bad enough, let alone all the drilling for heads, painting, etc.

Two more Conscripts get painted, these two were a little rushed and would need some touch-up later...but they are only 3 point models:

Only 23 more to go...the Conscripts were painted two by two hurrah, hurrah.

Thank you ExFideFortis,

The Brown used in the pouches is Bubonic Brown with a highlight of Bleached Bone and Bubonic Brown mixed (they have new names now, but somewhere there is a paint compatibility charge on the forum.

The heads on the Conscripts are from the Berlin or Bust line of Separate Heads. They are not bad, but lack the fine detail in the faces you are likely used to from plastic and resin (they are pewter I believe).

Speaking of which...the Conscripts were painted two by two, hurrah! Hurrah!

Do you give them a heavy brown wash (or chestnut)? I would have pegged the pouches as Snakebite Leather or Bestial Brown. Bubonic Brown (at least my pot) is a much lighter beige/khaki.

Nice work on the tanks and banging out the conscripts.

Thanks Inevitable_Faith,
A 35 man Conscript squad is 105 points...I have been enjoying combining 3 Infantry squads and sending forward these large units and watching my opponents focus on trying to knock them out, a Priest or a Commissar keeps them moving and as soon as they are in Lasgun range the "Front Rank Fire, Rear Rank Fire" order means even Space Marine's take casualties. This squad would let me do that for less cost with a few less hits due to lower ballistic skill...but the sheer number of dice makes opponents cringe.

Nevelon is correct Snakebite Leather and then Bubonic Brown mixed with Snakebite Leather as the highlight. Just have the Snakebite in a Bestial Brown bottle...not sure why...might have been the lid breaking on the original.

Thanks Nevelon.

Another two Conscripts.

17 to go, 18 completed...over half way...but still two short of a legal unit.

Old paint names are something I can actually help with. Mostly these days I can only talk in generic terms like “a medium-dark brown” because I have no idea what the exact shade “XV-88”, “Burnt Fyrewumple Hide”, or whatever else they are putting on the side of the pots these days is. And the lids snapping off the old pots? Almost every one of mine. The part that bugs me the most when it breaks is the little plastic nub that gives you a grip to open them. If that comes off, the pot becomes a real bear to work with.

I think they would make great whiteshields. The lack of helmets/heavier armor makes them look slimmer then a stock guardsmen, so younger.

Once you finish this squad are you going to make two more like it? If they are only 105 points, you should have the points in most lists.

It’s the Guard’s rule of 3: If you want something done, take three of them. The first will die before doing anything, the second will miss, but the third will get the job done.

And conscripts are a pure example of one of the core IG tenets: We have more bodies then you have bullets.

Keep at it!

That was always the goal of the Conscripts, to make them look young or very old depending on the face. As for the Guardsmen with enormous heads...plastic Guard have had large round helmets since the first Rogue Trader box of 36 models.

Thanks EDC,

Some army shots:

So what I discovered when I was placing the models out I had to get down to six Troop selections. So you see two Platoons of four squads, Command Section and additional Heavy Weapon Squads over on the left. The three Veteran Squads, Storm Troopers, Ratskin Snipers [Ratlings], and Ogryns with two Company Command Squads are in the center. Another large platoon with three squads (no Heavy Weapons in these), Special Weapon Squad and additional Conscript Squad led by a Priest on the right. Throughout are some Commissars, Priests, Primus Psykers, Adeptus Mechanicus Squad, etc (you can have some fun and try to spot them). Behind the three Platoons, Veterans and Elites are the vehicles (two Leman Russ and a Demolisher, Griffon Artillery squadron, Hellhounds and assorted artillery), Sentinels and the spare Basilisk turrets (fills my Heavy Support using squadrons, and two thirds of my Fast Attack). Due to the shift from four Platoons to three I ended up with a bunch of extra Sergeants, Officers, and lots of Special Weapons. Therefore one of my next painting campaigns will be some extra regular BPIs to flesh out the extra squads.

Pulling out of storage, placing on a yoga mat, taking the photos and packing up again took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Also had to battle the cat for supremacy of the table...as Nelson feels that the yoga mat is his special rest spot and the plastic Cadian models are his personal flick toys (He also has a taste for Sentinel aerials and Hydra Autocannon barrels). :(

Awesome army shots. And I can sympathise regarding the cat, just just loving attacking minis.

I can't see how the guard struggled against it though, surely you just issued an order to Bring It Down.

Thanks everyone.

Beginning to look forward to 8th although I admit I am little nervous that Guard Sergeants will lose those lovely Bolters again. :(

I really should finish my plastic Valkyrie at some point and call it a day...but then there are a few more models that could be painted.

Cheers,

Sweet army CB. I love the look and different feel of all your armies. The sisters are great, the Elysians are gorgeous, but the 8th hits a soft spot inside of me as the 8th was one of the first real 40k armies I build back in RT era.

Great job of transfering all of your pics from PB to imagur and keeping the records of all your hard work alive and accessible to us.

Thank you amazingturtles, FabricatorGeneralMike, Camkierhi, and Private Benjamin.

So as I have had to pack up everything that was not painted in preparation for a move I have not been able to paint, but I have been able to get some battles in. So I figured I would show my army in action.

A smaller battle (50 Force Points) between my Necromundian Guard and some Imperial Fist Space Marines.

From these pre-battle photos you can see that I was doing a hammer and anvil deployment with Conscripts and Guard squads holding the centre with a couple of Hellhounds and a Chimera with a small Ogryn squad on my right flank. One small squad of Stormtroopers was in reserve. Had an Officer, Astropath, Commissar for Characters to back up my troopers. Imperial Fist player had a Dreadnought, Rhino with a Tactical Squad embarked, Devastator Squad and Captain in Terminator Armor. In reserve he had an Assault Squad.

Six objectives set across the board and a good amount of terrain.

Cheers,

CB

Thank Nevelon, you need to see his Veterans where everyone is wearing a tabard.

Battle to the battle...

With the updates to the Commissar rules placing him close to the Conscripts was likely not the best choice, but testing out the new FAQs in game play is always a good thing.

Whereas placing an Officer close to a Heavy Weapons squad is just a no-brainer.

I had the first turn so my tanks advanced, as did the Conscripts. My fire reduced the Rhino to scrap and the Marines bailed out without loss.

I was hoping the Conscripts would be too tempting a target for the Marines and let my Hellhounds advance undamaged.

It did not work quite as I intended, as instead of Advancing the Imperial Fists just opened up with long range fire and damaged both Hellhounds, and killed a few Guardsmen and some Conscripts. But the fire was spread across multiple units and they all survived or in the Case of the Conscripts lost a few more models to a failed test.

It was like he wanted me to keep moving into range...and as an army with more models I obliged.

More to come,

CB

Thank you MacPhail,

So on their second turn the Imperial Fist Assault Marines landed on my left flank, where a lone squad had been sitting in cover holding an objective.

The Dreadnought surged forward and destroyed one of my Hellhounds.

With a tactical squad grabbing the objective.

The Marine Assault Squad did not succeed in their charge which meant on my turn my Storm Troopers came down to support my infantry squad.

Now the Imperial Guard counter attack. My second Hellhound and Ogryn carrying Chimera rolled forward.

I would like to think the Marine's were worried, but based on their armor saves they went through the turn untouched in the centre.

More to come.

Cheers,

CB

Now was the Guard counter attack. In the centre troops moved forward to bring the largest amount of firepower into range.

Starting on my left flank, the combined fire of my entrenched troops and the Storm Troopers laid waste to the Marine Assault Squad. Hotshot lasguns from the Storm Troopers were simply amazing and made up for the Missile Launcher missing.

In the centre the Dreadnought fell and the Tactical Squad backing it up got considerably smaller.

Although it was more than just lasguns as Lascanon's added their fire to the maelstrom. And still some Marines survived the withering fire.

My right flank forces continued to close in, the hammer to meet my troops in the centre.

More to come.

Cheers,

On another note, I dunno if you are aware of it, but Mad Robot produces some nice, slightly tweaked, knock-offs of the old Guard, right down to the zip up flak jackets and Ryza Pattern lasgun.

Thanks oldravenman3025,

Interesting links you found there. I actually sold my original plastic Guardsmen to a fellow in Sweden a very long time ago...right after the metal Guardsmen showed up. In fact I have sold four guard armies since then. With the effectiveness of Conscripts severely reduced I will likely just roll them into my Infantry Squads...with the elimination of the shoulder pads they resemble the older uniforms a lot...other than the Lasguns and helmets.

Back to the battle.

So the Imperial Fists returned fire and stayed in cover for their turn. Their fire killed a large number of Conscripts, but that was about it. The Devastator Squad focused on the closing Hellhound and Chimera and did some damage to the tanks, but they kept rolling on (although the Hellhound was pretty close to destruction).

My turn started with me advancing what was left of the Conscripts, who while melting away were still a large target.

I wanted to draw out some Marines to try and charge me and leave the objective in the centre. So I did not run straight at him.

My fire was less than satisfactory with not a single Marine being taken out.

Then on the Imperial Fist turn, something completely unexpected happened. First the Devastator Squad left the crater they had been occupying for several turns (I later learned that the objective card my opponent drew was the reason for this unexpected scamper).

Then his Captain Advanced and eventually charged single handed into the Guard line.

He did not suffer a scratch on the way in.

He slew a couple of Conscripts and that was it.

More to come.

Cheers,

CB

Thanks IGtR=,

So the deciding turn had arrived, while we were very close in VPs at this point due to the cards drawn and the numbers rolled for variable VP points, the Imperial Fists were down to a much smaller force. With their Captain heroically attempting to pin down the Guard and reduce units with his Relic Sword.

The Chimera having left the Ogryn brute squad behind closed to inflict fire on the Devastators.

The Ogryn's closed in to help the Conscripts who were losing more troopers to morale than the Marine's sword.

The brute squad of Ogryns turned the tide and the Marine Captain fell in close combat.

This sealed the Imperial Fist's fate as their last Tactical Squad was destroyed by Guard fire and they held no objectives to the Guard holding four and collecting enough Victory points for a win.

Cheers,

CB

Thanks stonned_astartes and Camkierhi,

After over a year and then some I have started painting five Guardsmen for this month's painting challenge.

Work in progress:

Finally doing a command section for the Third Platoon with Standard, Vox and Medic. I got some enthusiasm back with the "Chain of Command" challenge...which a Guard Command Squad is a perfect example. Also going to replace the Junior Officer I have leading the Third Platoon to one with a Bolter as the Power Sword and Bolt Pistol has not been very effective. As if I am in hand to hand I am pretty well dead already. Even though they are Veterans, I have painted a Trooper with a Lasgun rather than a special weapon to show the chain of command up to the Office.

The long painting war continues...

Thanks Excommunicatus,

It can be a little wet out here.

As for the heads, I will use this latest WIP shot.

From left to right looking at the photo: Berlin or Bust (West Wind Productions), GW Medic head, GW Cadian Sergeant head with GS cap, Berlin or Bust (West Wind Productions), FW Veteran head with GS cap.
The GS caps are made with two part putty. If you look back on my conversions you should see dozens of them.

Here is my Necromundian Guard Junior Officer and Command Section that I finished for the Dakka (Unofficial) Painting Challenge Round 45 November 2018: Chain of Command

Trooper Haskel on the left, while a Veteran is junior to Specialist Surach (Medic), who is junior to Corporal Vortagen (VOX Operator), who is junior to Colour Sergeant Kussax, who is junior to Lieutenant Kurssach.
All are patch members (on the right forearms of their uniforms) of the "Spiders" Clan from Hive Palantine of the planet Necromunda. The Clan that traditionally provides the personnel for the 8th Regiment with each raising of troops for the Imperial tithe. As veterans there are a fair number of extra weapons, including several side arms. Due to their role as supporting Lieutenant Kussach, many are wearing the soft cap rather than their helmets they would wear at the front line. Each trooper has the "8" of their regimental number and the skull motif for the battle honours for the Battle of Deucalion that wiped out a previous raising of the Regiment on the planet Deucalion.

OK,

Converted five of the six models as I was never happy with the default pose for the trooper with the round.

You can see the Green Stuff (well it is white for the epoxy putty I use) to make it look like the Plasma gunners are wearing the protective gloves.

Note to self, next time drill the hole in the bottom of the Plasma Gun prior to gluing it to the figure mounted on the base...no room to get the pin vice drill in.

Thanks Camkierhi,

Now it is time for the closing acts...I only have just over a dozen models left to paint for my Imperial Guard.

Six Guardsmen in this lot.

I am planning on painting these and the six other infantry models followed by the Valkyrie to finish the army off.

Thanks guys.

Finished the six more Necromundian Guardsmen. Three with flamers and one with a VOX.

All with their gang patches, Regimental Number and different heads than the regular box set. One reason I have been doing so many Special Weapons lately is that with the Conscript becoming as expensive as a regular Guardsmen I will just use them to fill the ranks and build an extra platoon or two.

Looking good! And your photography is very nice with the bright lighting and the contrasting blue background. It works quite well.

These are fantastic. Never really liked grey as a camo scheme but those troops are very cool my friend.
Shows just what a simple step like a head swap can do to make a force look different. Plus the quality of your work over different projects is great.

Ps I had the white dwarf with the art work of the guard regiment years ago, was actually one of the pieces of art that pulled me in to the warhammer universe. Now i must be a lot older than i realise. Lol.

Yeah, really characterful army and excellent painting. What always amazes me about your work CB is the consistently high standard and the extraordinary output!

Thanks Camkierhi.

The last five (well four plus the lad above) Guardsmen without should pads. Not as detailed as my last for groups, but then these were the last five Conscripts I have had sitting around for years and just could never get the mojo to paint finish them...until now.

Next up is the last Sergeant and an end to my infantry forces.

End? There is no end. You’ve been around long enough to know better. The painting war is a war without end...

Nice to see the troopers marching across the bench in good order though.

Late to the party but these are very cool. Good job on the painting and the general aesthetic. Did you trim the Cadian shoulder pads of that last batch, I considered doing it for a project but thought it would be to much work, did it take you long?

Too true...in fact my entry in this post is a combination of the Guardsmen I have painted for the Painting Challenge combined with those completed and not entered as they did not fit the theme of the month.

Thanks Tank_Dweller, I did, in fact I think there is a tutorial on how I did it some pages back. I did it for 40 models that I was using as Conscripts, although now they are sprinkled in other squads as juve members of the Spiders.

As noted I have finished the last Sergeant. So that is all the remaining infantry for the 8th painted.

Now when I collect all the models I have painted for this army in the last two years for the Monthly Painting Challenge, plus this 10 I have done in between my batches of 5 models.

If I take out one Flamer model and one of the regular trooper and add an old Officer I have this force:

Which makes a tidy little Guard force - Officer, Commissar, Command Section, Veteran Squad, two Infantry Squads and one heavy weapons squad.

That grey cloth is looking really good - the overall scheme with the bases is highly striking and effective.

I agree with Kestral: the shading and layering on the grey cloth is very nice. And the models have enough contrast to define individual detail in large squads, which keeps them from blending together into a blob when you have large platoons. And everyone having the regimental number on the shoulder pads is a nice touch.

I also like the bits of characterful detail you have, such as the plasma gunners (unlike the other special and heavy weapons troopers) are all wearing gloves, presumably because of their weapons' propensity for overheating! I love those kind of modeling and painting details that cater to the background information and rules.
